Notes: Long Nose 85-86. First lock-up clutch at Indy resulted in best ever times of 5.509 at 271.41, which were not backed up for records. Hit the first 5.40s with a 5.425 low qualifier at the Ennis Chiefs which was not backed up as a record. However, a 5.543 at Ennis was backed up as the new record. Ran 266.66 and 265.17 at 86 Chiefs. | This was Kenny's last year with the Tempo body and probably one of, if not, his best season. The NHRA season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified first with a 5.60 and continued to run 5.60's in the first two rounds over Rick Johnson and John Martin. But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Tim Grose who ran a 5.61 for the win. Kenny's 5.60 held for Low ET. At the Gatornationals, he qualified first with a track record 5.59 at 261.17. In the first round he beat Tom Hoover's 5.76-254 with a 5.64-255.24. In round two, a 5.66-256.99 beat John Force's 5.91-212 but he lost to a holeshot by Tom McEwen in the semifinals, when Tom's 5.67-256 beat Kenny's 5.65-255.82. He was runner-up to Paul Smith at the IHRA Pro-Am at Rockingham and once again he walked off with Low ET honors with a 5.58. At the NHRA Southern Nationals in April, he qualified first with a 5.67-260.86 (Low ET and Top Speed), but then suffered a rare first round loss. He got out qualified for the first time that year at the NHRA Cajun Nationals when Force ran 5.66 (Low ET) while Kenny had to settle for the second position with a 5.69-253.73. But for the second race in a row, he lost in the first round. This time his 5.88-237.52 lost to Johnny West's 5.83-252 in the "Hawaiian." At Bristol he got another runner-up finish at the IHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET at 5.57 but in the final he blew an engine letting Grose's 5.87-231 get the victory. Another runner-up finish followed at the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.65-254.02 qualified #2 behind Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. And that's how they finished. The final saw Oswald's 5.76-255 take the win over the Tempo's 5.80-250.13. It was a strange situation, the "Budweiser King" was probably the most feared car to come up against in competition, yet here it was, the middle of June and the team hadn't won yet. Well, that all changed with the running of the Super Stock Nationals. While it wasn't a major event, it was still a satisfying win. Kenny qualified first in the eight car show with a 5.62-257.14 (Low ET and Top Speed). He beat Bruce Larson and Dominic Santucci with times of 5.75-254.95 and 5.72-256.41 before singling for the win with a 5.76-251.39 when West's Daytona broke. Now that the seal was broken, the wins started coming. On June 29 he won the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.71-254.66 but went on to set Low ET at 5.66 and in the final be beat Force with a 5.69-257.28. The following week (July 6), he won the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan. A 5.81-256.41 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified first and he beat Smith and Grose with times of 5.95-253.52 and 5.84-252 to meet Oswald in the final. A 5.87-253.52 wrapped up the win. He took his fourth meet in a row at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 behind Oswald with a 5.62-239.48. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round and a 5.67-254 beat West in round two. In the semifinals, Hoover smoked the tires against him and his 5.66-257 got lane choice over Force in the final. Once again Bernstein prevailed, running 5.65-259.39 for another win. He managed to get into the finals at the next NHRA race, the Mile High Nationals at Denver. Kenny qualified first with a 5.84-227.96 and made his way into the final to meet Oswald. It took a Low ET of the meet run by Oswald to keep Bernstein out of the winners circle again. Mark's 5.81-252 nipped Kenny's close 5.82-247.52. He won the PHR Championships at U.S. 131, Martin, Michigan. A 5.79-247.25 qualified first in the sixteen car field. In the first two rounds he ran 5.74 and 5.50 while beating Bob Gottschalk and Scott Kalitta. But in the semifinals, he set track records of 5.72-259.36 to beat Grose's 5.94. In the final, he ran Oswald again. But Kenny took the win easily with a 5.77-257.87 when Mark had problems and slowed to a 7.55-120. On August 17, Kenny set Low ET in qualifying first at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a track record 5.67 at 251.39. Unfortunately, in the first round, he fouled away a 5.81 against Billy Meyer. The following week (August 24), he was back in the winner's circle at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #2 (behind Oswald), but improved to a meet's best of 5.57-260. In the final, he met and beat Oswald.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Need to verify these times for 1986 (match race at Englishtown?) Seem very quick and our 1987 entry cites a 5.54 as Johnny's career best? Ran a world beating 5.588-263.62 at Pomona Winters 85 that Bernstein eclipsed with a 5.559 at Rockingham Fall. | West's first time out driving for Roland Leong was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The team did pretty well, qualifying #8 with a 5.77-255.68 and running an even better 5.74-256.41 to beat Tripp Shumake's 5.85-237 in the first round. In the second round he ran Dale Pulde but West crossed the centerline on his run and was disqualified. They qualified #8 again at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.87-256.55. Unfortunately, West smoked the tires to a 6.35-250.13 loss to Scott Kalitta's also traction plagued 6.22-186. At Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Johnny qualified #8 (again) with a 5.86-251.25. He beat Bruce Larson in round one and a 6.84-244.83 advanced into the semifinals when John Force crossed the centerline. In the semis, he fouled against Jim Head. Famoso held an eight car FC show for its Bakersfield March (May) Meet. Roland and crew were there and West ran a 5.88-252.10 to qualify #5. He faced low qualifier Force in the first round and his 5.84 lost to Force's 5.80. Baton Rouge and the Cajun Nationals was NHRA's next stop and a 6.01-243.70 qualified Johnny #10. He picked up to a 5.83-252.59 in the first round to beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.88-237. He lost traction in round two, but his 6.13-240.89 still beat Scott Kalitta's 6.87-145. In the semifinals, Johnny's 5.94-244.43 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.86-245. On June 15 they were at Columbus, Ohio, for the NHRA Springnationals. West qualified the car #6 with a 5.83-251.46 and beat Gary Phillips in the first round but he lost in round two. They made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. It was an eight car show and Johnny qualified #2 with a 5.84-252.10 behind Bernstein's 5.62 (low ET). A first round 5.91-251.39 beat Jerry Caminito and in the semifinals, a 5.90-249.30 beat Kalitta's 6.05-240. In the final, he met Bernstein and the Daytona broke, giving Kenny a solo for the victory. At the end of June the were up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The "Hawaiian" was making some horsepower there as he ran a 5.74 at a whopping 261.93 (top speed) to qualify #3. West ran a first round 5.78-234.86 over Ed McCulloch's 5.94-250. In round two, a 5.79-259.21 beat a tire smoking Tom McEwen but in the semifinals, he fouled against Bernstein. He won an eight car show at Englishtown on July 2. His best run there was a 5.78-258.62 in the first round while beating Larson's 6.31-184. He got the win by beating Tom Hoover in the final with a 6.17-241.93 over Tom's 6.41-237. They were back at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.72-261.17 qualified #6 and he beat Caminito in the first round, but a 5.85 in round two lost to Bernstein's 5.67. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Leong proved that he could still tune a car to big numbers. A 5.87-253.16 (top speed) qualified #3. West made he way into the semifinals before running an off pace 6.03-237.71 that lost to Bernstein's 5.86-242. He qualified #4 with a 5.78-257.87 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Johnny beat Brad Tuttle's quicker 5.93-247 in the first round with a 5.95-250.00. In the second round, he lost to McCulloch. A week later (Aug 24), they were at Cordova for the World Series where West set a 260.34 track speed record.

Notes: The Nitro Funny Cars set the Quit Motorplex alight last night with a fantastic display of match racing from the Greene Machine and Chemical Warfare teams. The best was saved for last when Allan Dobson ran an awesome 5.33, Australia's quickest ever funny car pass. The run was one of the night's most spectacular when the skilled Dobson pedalled at around 200 feet, locking up the clutch and putting the front wheels about a foot into the air with a powerstand out to almost half track. Unfortunately Dobson clipped a timing box at the finish line with the body, handing the win to Ashley Bailey. The first round match up saw Dobson smoke the tyres 100 feet out, facing both walls before wrangling the car back into the middle of the lane. Bailey ran through for a then PB 5.45. The second race was brilliant for the crowd with both cars pedalling several times, remaining even right to the thousand foot beam before Bailey clicked early, Dobson able to thunder through for a 5.61-284mph win against Bailey's 5.85. Of course the final race was the best, Dobson's 5.33 narrowly defeating a 5.44 from Bailey. It was difficult to tell if Dobson left the ET beam intact or not on the finish line. If so this would be Australia's quickest side by side funny car race. If not, it probably would still have been given how close Bailey was to Dobson at the finish line. All in all a fantastic show put on by the funny cars in front of the season's biggest crowd.
