Notes: Head started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.67/252.38, and he won his opening round race against Tripp Shumake, who lost a blower and crossed the centerline. His opponent, Brad Tuttle, smoked the tires in round two, and Jim's 5.66/258.76 advanced. Mark Oswald smoked the tires in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinal, and Head ran 7.66/123.59 to go into the final. There he would face Dale Pulde. Dale had been running 5.4s, so it looked like he was in trouble. It turned out that both smoked the tires, and Pulde recovered first to a 6.02/223 to take the victory over Jim's 6.38/184.95. He was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 5.70/248.48 qualified #13, and in round one, he beat Johnny West, who was driving the "Hawaiian."Both had problems, and Jim's 7.29/138.29 beat West's 9.67/87. But his 8.78/97.91 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.06/218 in round two. He then raced at the IHRA Texas Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.58/236.53. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. He qualified #5 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he windowed a block while running 5.65/253.37 in defeating Darrell Amberson in the first round. After changing the engine, he smoked the tires against John Force in round two. The following week, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.59/254.95 qualified #3. Amberson broke against him in round one, and Jim advanced with a 5.98/245.23. In the semi-final, Oswald fouled, and Jim ran 5.72/248.61. In the final, he went up against low qualifier Ed McCulloch, and Head fouled. He shut down to 6.33/175.00 while Ed ran 5.68/261 for the victory. Jim showed up using a new high-gear only, AFT 5-stage clutch at Memphis. It seemed to pay off as he ran 5.55/264.00 to qualify second to John Force's similar,5.55/263. In the first round, Head's 5.68/253.02 beat West's 5.86/247. In round two, he used a 5.71/255.02 to defeat R.C.Sherman's 5.82/259. He and Oswald had a close race in the semi-final that saw Mark's 5.62/268 beat his 5.65/264.70. Still, Head was now up to fourth in NHRA points with the semi-final finish. Photo from Columbus 1988. Jim started running top fuel beginning at Indy in 1988 and continued in that class in 1989. The Memphis and Columbus times were his best of the year, but Jim was a solid qualifier in the 5.50s and 5.60s and nearly reset his bests at Seattle with a 5.565/267.06 pass. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. Gary attempted to qualify at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, but his 5.57/256.26 best was good for first alternate. The 5.57 was a career best to this point, but he did record a 5.43 at a match race, but he discounts it. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified on the "bump" with a new best of 5.55/259.96. A first-round 5.58/259.51 lost to Jim White's 5.39/277. He did not run another NHRA event until Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. There he was third alternate with a best of 5.56/258.69. |

Notes: Photo from Columbus, Oh. -1987. Scott switched from his Mustang bodied car of '86 to the Oldsmobile Firenza for '87. He started the year at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car show and Kalitta had problems running a best of 6.37 that failed to qualify. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but ended up as the sixth alternate for the show with a best of 5.93/229.53. | Scott would then go to the Coca Cola Funny Car Classic at the Texas Motorplex where Scott Qualified 4th in the 7 car field with a 5.815/236.40. In round 1 Scott would get a single after #7 Qualifier Gary Densham broke. In the Semis he faced #5 Qualifier Steve Hodkinson where Scott won with a 5.79/263.46, however Scott scorched the Rod Bearings in that run & couldn't make the Final against #1 Qualifier Raymond Beadle & therefore, Hodkinson would get reinstated. | At the NHRA Gatornationals, Scott qualified on the "bump" with a 5.89/246.50. An off-pace 6.21/185.83 in the first round, lost to Johnny West's 5.79/242 in the "Hawaiian." He had no trouble qualifying for the next NHRA race, the Southern Nationals, when only sixteen-cars showed to fill the sixteen spots available. Kalitta ran 8.82/155.89 to qualify #16. In the first round, he surprised West by beating him with a 5.75/240.51. In round two Scott had problems and slowed to 6.30/227.21, but still won when Don Prudhomme smoked the tires and then shut off. Kalitta's run came to an end in the semifinals where he lost to John Force. He was at Rockingham on May 3 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he lost to Jim Head in the first round. The next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, again had only sixteen-cars show. Scott's 6.86/149.92 qualified #12. The event was postponed one week due to rain and Kalitta was unable to return for the rain date. The rain date was on May 31 which was the day IHRA held it's Springnationals at Bristol. Scott chose to race there instead. Unfortunately, he lost to low qualifier, Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals where the best of 6.04/242.98 was good for the second alternate. The Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove was Scott's next stop. A 5.92 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but in the first round, Jerry Caminito stepped up to a 5.93/241 that beat his 5.97/239.36. He followed the NHRA tour up to Canada for the Grandnationals, where only fifteen Funny Car's showed. Scott ran an easy 6.22/229.70 to qualify #12. In the first round his 6.04/233.76 lost to Prudhomme's 6.00/225. RH |

Notes: Long Nose 85/86. Photo from Milan, MI, IHRA Northern Nats 85. Set NHRA ET records at 5.646 at 85 Gators and 5.569 at 1985 Maple Grove. Low qualifier at 1985 Gators with a 5.672. Ran 258.76 at 85 World Finals. | Kenny started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing in January. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a new track record 5.74 at 248.61 (Top Speed). Kenny made his way into the final by beating Tom McEwen with a 5.84/248.61 and a tire-smoking single in the semifinals when Paul Smith was unable to run after a first-round fire. He met John Collins in the final and the "Budweiser King's" reverser failed so Collins got to solo for the victory. The following week, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.74/254.09 qualified #4 and in round one, a 5.80/259 beat Jim Head. Bernstein ran a career-best (to this point) 5.67 at 235.60 in round two, but he lost to Rick Johnson who was running a 5.58/263 in the "Hawaiian." He was in Atlanta for an eight-car show in March where his 5.81/250.00 qualified in the #2 spot. In the first round, Mark Oswald stepped up from a qualifying 5.91 to a 5.72/248 in the "Candies and Hughes" car to beat his 5.85/249.30. Things clicked for the team at the NHRA Gatornationals. Kenny qualified #1 with a 5.67/261.78 (Top Speed). Frank Hawley broke a transmission in the first round, in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and Bernstein advanced with a 6.25/226.92. In round two, his 5.71/251.81 beat Tom Hoover and a semifinal NHRA record-setting 5.64 at 256.70 took out Collins' tire shaking Camaro. He faced John Lombardo driving Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" in the final. John had problems and shut down while Kenny ran 5.70/254.09 for the win. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Once again, he ran well, lasting until the semifinals where his 5.80/247 lost to Oswald's 5.78/260. Another NHRA title came at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals in April. Kenny's 5.72/254.09 qualified #1, and he worked his way to the final by stopping a tire-smoking Dale Pulde in the first round, with a 5.81/249.03. In round two, a 5.80/249.58 ended Jody Smart's chances and a 5.75/254.66 got around Don Prudhomme's off-pace 6.12/204 in the semifinals. His final-round opponent was Ed "the Ace" McCulloch. There was no stopping Bernstein on this day as his track record 5.69 at 252.95 got the victory over Ed's 5.81/247. While he was running strong in NHRA, he was still not able to reach the final in IHRA competition. At the second race of the season, the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, he got another semifinal finish when Billy Meyer's 5.88/250 beat his 5.95/243. Bernstein's next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 5.74/247.93 qualified #2 behind Pulde's similar 5.74/251. He beat McCulloch in round one, with a 5.83/243.90. In round two, a 5.76/245.49 beat Oswald, but in the semifinals, Kenny lost an engine on a 6.09/185 pass that beat a tire-smoking John Force. The team replaced the engine for the final where he ran Head. Something wasn't, buttoned up right as the "Budweiser King" broke on the line and Head soloed for the race win. His IHRA semifinal streak continued at Bristol for the Springnationals. There, he set Low ET in the semifinals with a 5.66 at 258, but he lost to eventual winner Pulde whose quick-leaving 5.69/257 won. Things were better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 at 5.75/248.48, and then a track record 5.73 at 251 beat Al Segrini and in round two, his 5.74/249.03 got around a tire spinning Pulde. Another 5.74 at 248.48 beat an out of shape Prudhomme in the semifinals. This matched Kenny up against Texas neighbor Meyer in the final. Billy overpowered the track and went up in smoke while Bernstein won his third NHRA race of the season with a 5.81/251.25. The team's next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Kenny's 5.67/249.30 (Top Speed) qualified #2 behind Pulde's 5.66/249. In the first round, Bernstein set Low ET with a track record 5.65 at 249.30 to beat Chuck Etchells. A semifinal 5.78/243.24 advanced over Tim Grose. This paired him up against Pulde in the final. Kenny had traction issues and Pulde won with a 5.90/247. Another runner-up finish came at the NHRA Grandnationals. There, he only ran 5.85/246.94 to qualify #10. Both he and Grose ran 5.84 (the Bud car at 244.96), but Kenny got the win light. In round two, Oswald fouled against him and Kenny blew an engine while advancing with a 5.85/240.12. The team swapped out a new engine for the semifinal and it improved the car to a 5.69/252.52 to beat Prudhomme's 5.80/256. He faced Johnson in the final and despite running a 5.79/250.13, Rick picked up his first NHRA National event victory with a 5.72/260. The following week (July 7), he had some bad luck at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #4 for the show, but attempted another run. Something let go and the car turned into a fireball. Kenny got it stopped and was OK, but the car was damaged badly and was unable to run in eliminations. With a team this strong, they didn't miss a beat, showing up at Englishtown the next week for the NHRA Summernationals. Bernstein set Low ET with a track record 5.62 at 234 in qualifying number one. He then ran 5.90, 5.85, and 5.76 at 249.58 to beat McEwen, Pulde, and John Force (in that order). In the final, he went up against Grose, and Bernstein's 5.77/249.58 scored the win over Grose's 5.80/250. Best NHRA times were the 5.569 at Maple Grove and 261.78 at the Gators. Ran 5.714/250.69 in winning IHRA Cincinnati over Dale Pulde, snapping Dale's four-win streak. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Jim was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His best of 6.42 failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to make the show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.87/245.96 best was good for the fourth alternate. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 11 where ten FCs each made two runs and the two lowest ETs met in the final. Jim's first race had his 6.22/231.95 beat Johnny West's 6.23/186 in the "Hawaiian." In his second race, his 6.33/176.81 lost to Gary Densham's 6.13/234. His ETs were not good enough to get into the final. Later that month, he was at Sacramento for similarly run show. Dunn won his first race over a broken Wally Giavia with a 6.08/245.91. In his second race, he ran 5.96/247.84 to beat Jim Murphy's 6.06/228. Unfortunately, once again, his times were not good enough to make the final. Dunn failed to qualify at the NHRA Fallnationals where his 5.92/253.09 was the fifth alternate. Going into the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona, Jim's best ET had been 5.74. But before the race, a new lock-up clutch was installed as well as dual magnetos and fuel pumps. On his first qualifying attempt, he ran 5.71/253.59. The next run was 5.67/258.54 and a final 5.60/267.45 qualified #13. He upset a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein in the opening round with yet another career-best of 5.55 at 266.98, but he lost to Mark Oswald in round two. |

Notes: One of the biggest surprises at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona in '86 was Oswald's not qualifying for the show. His best attempt yielded only a 9.56/87.89. That was nowhere near the 6.09 "bump spot." The team then went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. Mark was still not running up to par, qualifying #7 with a 6.61/237.46. A first-round 6.38/247.93 (Top Speed) beat Billy Meyer, who shut off, but in the semifinals, he shut off and lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86 (Low ET) at 236. In Gainesville, things went much better for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Mark ran a 5.70/263.00 (Top Speed) to qualify #2. In the first round, an even better 5.65/259.36 beat a tire-smoking John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." In the second round, it was Oswald who smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.96/49.71 that lost to Ed McCulloch. Due to a rain delay, the Gatornats were run the same weekend as the IHRA Winternationals, so obviously, they didn't run the Darlington race. But they did make IHRA's second event, the Bayou Nationals at Louisiana Raceway Park. Oswald qualified #1 and beat McCulloch in the final for the victory. He lost to Jim Head in the first round, at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta after qualifying #2 with a 5.72/258.91 behind Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/260. On May 4, the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Oswald qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.70, but he was upset in the opening round by Steve Hodkinson. Mark's off-pace 6.05/205.94 fell to Steve's low buck car that won with a 5.88/246. Early in June, Oswald went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 5.76/263.11 (Top Speed) qualified #4. He improved to 5.74/260.11 to defeat Force's 5.78/253 in round one, but he lost in the battle of the "beer cars" in the semifinal, where his 5.78/257.14 fell to Bernstein's 5.71/252. Mark qualified #5 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.75/249.86. In their first-round race, Hodkinson crossed the center line against him, and Oswald advanced with a 5.92/246.77. John Force also crossed the centerline against him in the second round, and once again, Mark advanced, this time at 5.84/252.59. This did not happen again in the semifinal, as eventual winner Tom McEwen laid a straight as an arrow 5.85/236 on him to beat the Firebird's 5.94/251.81. Another win finally came at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Mark set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.65/259.66 (speed was a new track record). He continued to run strong through eliminations, and in the semifinal, his 5.76/255.17 beat Force's 5.84/253. The only problem was, Bernstein won his semifinal race with a 5.72/255, giving him lane choice in the final. Crew Chief Leonard Hughes had to be given a lot of credit in this win as he didn't dial in too much power and smoke the tires. Oswald won the final with a 5.76/255.76 over Kenny's 5.80/250. The following week (June 22), he also won the IHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.84/247.25. Larry Gould's 6.67/212 fell to his 5.89/252.80 in the opening round, and Mark reset both ends of the track record in the semifinal with a 5.77/254.95 that beat Paul Smith's 6.12/222 in the "Custom Body" car. He faced McEwen in the final, and there was no stopping the "Candies and Hughes" car on this day as Mark's 5.80/254.95 easily took the win over Tom's off-pace 6.19/176. At the end of June, the team was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.69/260.25 got the pole, but Mark and Brad Tuttle fried the tires in the opening round. Brad's 6.59/251 came out on top over Oswald's 6.61/251. It was probably the best race to watch of round one. The two "beer cars then met again in the final at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. They qualified one and two, with Bernstein's 5.81/256 getting the pole over Oswald's 5.87/245.90. Mark ran an easy 6.03/239.36 to advance in round one, when Doc Halladay broke. In the semifinal, he stepped it up to a 5.91/249 to beat a crossed-up Ed McCulloch. Bernstein had the edge in performance at this event, and it stayed true in the final where his 5.87/253 got the victory over Mark's 5.99/238.09 runner-up effort. Photo from Indy 1986. Mark also ran 265 at IHRA Bristol and won the 1986 IHRA championship. He also ran 5.619 at the 1986 Chiefs at Ennis. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Cool rear spoiler. Oswald, smoking the tires, also beat Bernstein wire-to-wire in the final of the '86 Mile-Highs, a hell of a race on YouTube. Bernstein didn't smoke 'em, and Oswald still beat him. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Photo from 1991 Norwalk. Did not run there as IHRA only ran TAFC's. Confirmed 5.620 at 263.23 in Atlanta 91. Where were the 5.569 at 265.95 run? | Bob attempted to qualify at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, but his 5.74/253.59 best was good for third alternate. He did not attend any other NHRA races after that, in '91. |

Notes: At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, Whit's 5.57/259.74 qualified #12. In the first round, he lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Probe. Bazemore did not make another NHRA race until the Cajun Nationals in May. He ran 5.88/246.10 to qualify #15, but Tom Hoover beat him in round one. The following week (May 27), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, his best of 6.15/234.24 failed to qualify for the eight-car field. Whit qualified #9 at the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost in round one, again, this time to Art Hendey. He went a long time again before qualifying at another NHRA event. In August, he made the show in the #16 spot at the Northstar Nationals with a 5.90/235.40. Eventual winner John Force stopped him in the first round. Photo from 1990 Norwalk. |

Notes: Rune was a Norwegian racer who bought Tom Hoover's old car. He competed at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #14 with a career-best 5.587/257.58. The car went into heavy tire shake in the opening round, and he shut down against K.C. Spurlock. His previous best had been 6.03 at Santa Pod. Rune bettered his Gainesville run later that year at Santa Pod with a nice 5.57 at the 1990 Cannonball event. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Did Johnny go 5.427/268.65 somewhere this year (perhaps a match race at Englishtown?) Seems very quick. Listing his best NHRA times until we get confirmation. | West's first time out driving for Roland Leong was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The team did pretty well, qualifying #8 with a 5.775/255.68 and running an even better 5.749/256.41 to beat Tripp Shumake's 5.85/237 in the first round. In the second round, he ran Dale Pulde, but West crossed the centerline on his run and was disqualified. They qualified #8 again at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.87/256.55. Unfortunately, West smoked the tires to a 6.35/250.13 loss to Scott Kalitta's also traction plagued 6.22/186. At Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Johnny qualified #8 (again) with a 5.86/251.25. He beat Bruce Larson in round one, and a 6.84/244.83 advanced into the semifinals when John Force crossed the centerline. In the semis, he fouled against Jim Head. Famoso held an eight-car Funny Car show for its Bakersfield March (May) Meet. Roland and crew were there and West ran a 5.88/252.10 to qualify #5. He faced low qualifier Force in the first round, and his 5.84 lost to Force's 5.80. Baton Rouge and the Cajun Nationals was NHRA's next stop and a 6.01/243.70 qualified Johnny #10. He picked up to a 5.83/252.59 in the first round, to beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.88/237. He lost traction in round two, but his 6.13/240.89 still beat Scott Kalitta's 6.87/145. In the semifinals, Johnny's 5.94/244.43 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.86/245. On June 15 they were at Columbus, Ohio, for the NHRA Springnationals. West qualified the car #6 with a 5.83/251.46 and beat Gary Phillips in the first round, but he lost in round two. They made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and Johnny qualified #2 with a 5.84/252.10 behind Bernstein's 5.62 (Low ET). A first-round 5.91/251.39 beat Jerry Caminito and in the semifinals, a 5.90/249.30 beat Kalitta's 6.05/240. In the final, he met Bernstein and the Daytona broke, giving Kenny a solo for the victory. At the end of June, the were up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The "Hawaiian" was making some horsepower there as he ran a 5.74 at a whopping 261.93 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. West ran a first-round 5.78/234.86 over Ed McCulloch's 5.94/250. In round two, a 5.79/259.21 beat a tire smoking Tom McEwen, but in the semifinals, he fouled against Bernstein. He won an eight-car show at Englishtown on July 2. His best run there was a 5.78/258.62 in the first round, while beating Larson's 6.31/184. He got the win by beating Tom Hoover in the final with a 6.17/241.93 over Tom's 6.41/237. They were back at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.72/261.17 qualified #6 and he beat Caminito in the first round, but a 5.85 in round two lost to Bernstein's 5.67. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Leong proved that he could still tune a car to big numbers. A 5.87/253.16 (Top Speed) qualified #3. West made his way into the semifinals before running an off pace 6.03/237.71 that lost to Bernstein's 5.86/242. He qualified #4 with a 5.78/257.87 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Johnny beat Brad Tuttle's quicker 5.93/247 in the first round, with a 5.95/250.00. In the second round, he lost to McCulloch. A week later (August 24), they were at Cordova for the World Series where West set a 260.34 track speed record. Qualified number one at the NHRA Finals with his best national event times, 5.584/262.62. Unfortunately, Dale Pulde got to him in round one, 5.80 to 5.90. |
