Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. In its first NHRA National event, John qualified the car #5 and in round one, a 5.81-247.38 beat Tim Grose's 5.97-209. In round two, John's 5.91-212.56 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.66-256. In the final, a 5.76-243.90 took the win over Johnny West's 5.96-249 in the "Hawaiian." On April 20, he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.75-252.95 qualified #4. He beat Martin in the first round before getting out of shape in round two and crossing the centerline. He took another win when he won the Bakersfield May meet. He set Low ET in qualifying first with a 5.76-243.90. A first round 5.80-245.90 beat West's 5.84 and in the semifinals, another 5.76-245.90 beat Meyer's 5.78-253. In the final he ran Martin. Notes: Photo from Indy 84. Won IHRA Bristol over Mark Oswald with a 5.776-252.10. | Billy had a strong year in '84. He won three races in NHRA and another three in IHRA and finished second to Mark Oswald in the NHRA FC points chase. He also ended the season with the quickest FC time ever, a 5.628 at the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol. Billy started the season by qualifying for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway in Jan with a 5.96-225.00. He beat John Martin in the first round with a 6.02-200.89 but in the semifinals, he broke an oil line and advanced Tom McEwen. As good as he ran in NHRA he started the year by failing to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals. A new Plueger built Mustang was debuted in March and it qualified #11 at the Gatornationals with a 5.93-243.90. A first round 5.85 beat Frank Hawley's 5.91 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In round two, a 6.17-226.70 got around Al Segrini but in the semifinals, both he and John Collins smoked the tires and John's 6.45-216 beat Meyer's 6.44-239. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, a 5.90 qualified #4 and he again made it into the semifinals when his 5.88 lost to McEwen's 5.89. Then things began to click, starting with the NHRA Southern Nationals. He won four straight races (two NHRA and two IHRA), and averaged 5.83 for 19 runs in those events. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.78-249.30 and went on to win over Kenny Bernstein in the final with a track record 5.73-252.80 over Bernstein's 5.80-254. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he qualified first with a 5.73 (Low ET) and beat Oswald in the final for the $31,000 purse. The next win came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Billy qualified #8 in the eight car show but beat a tire smoking Bernstein in the first round with a 5.94-250. In the semfinals, he soloed to a track record 5.81-246 when Dale Pulde was unable to appear. In the final, he took his third win with a 5.92-249.30 over Jim Head's 6.01-245. The crown jewel of this four race winning stretch came next, the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol on June 3. There he beat low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the first round, and then Sherm Gunn in round two with a 5.86-236.84. And in the semifinals, a 5.81-243.24 beat Denny Savage. In the final, he faced Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird and won with a 5.77-252.10 over Mark's 5.97-251. The win was worth a record $41,500. In comparison, the two NHRA wins were worth slightly over $10,000 each. His good run came to an end the following week (June 10) at the NHRA Springnationals. Although he qualified first with a track record 5.81 at 249.30 he lost in the first round with an off pace 6.27-207.31 that lost to John Force's 6.06-242. He made another $10,000 at the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals in Canada where he qualified #2 with a 5.84-250.69 and went on to beat Ed McCulloch in the final with a 5.85-247.25. At the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 8, he ran well but failed to reach the finals. A week later he did make the finals at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.88 qualified #12 and he beat McCulloch, Mike Dunn, and Hawley in the semifinals with a strong 5.79. In the final he met Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" and his 5.97-248.61 lost to Beadle's 5.95-247.

Notes: AMAZING 5.63, 244.56 shut off run at Indy this year, plus 5.73, 252.80 NHRA best speed. First Funny Car to run 250.00 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on 5-29-1982 (initial entry into the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Cars). Also, 247.25 at 82 Southerns. Credited with 255 mph run at AHRA Gary, which was probably more like a 245.

Notes: Photo from 1992 Winternationals. | Ron attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but his 6.10-208.09 best was only good enough for the fourth alternate spot. He did make the field at the NHRA Arizona Nationals where his 5.63-248.20 qualified on the "bump spot." A first round 5.85-210.62 lost to John Force's 5.33-277.

Notes: Bob attempted to qualify at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol but his best of 6.91-164.59 failed to qualify. As it turned out, he got into the field when Mark Oswald lost a motor and tore up his Firebird body in qualifying and was unable to run eliminations. Gilbertson picked up to a 5.88-219.56 in the first round to beat Wyatt Radke. In the semifinals he picked up even more to a 5.84-221.67 but lost to eventual winner Del Worsham's 5.55-261. He won the IHRA Summernationals at Cayuga on June 21. He qualified #3 with a 5.90-251.32. He worked his way into the final where his 5.64-253.73 beat Worsham's 5.74-262 for the title.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI 1986. Times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Tom had a great season in '86. He wasn't at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but he made sure he was noticed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.82-253.52. A 5.86-247.93 beat Ray Higley in the first round and in round two, a 5.86-249.03 beat a tire smoking Billy Meyer. In the semifinals, he faced low qualifier, Kenny Bernstein and McEwen was up to the task. He left on time and beat Bernstein's quicker 5.65-255 with a 5.67-256.11. That put him into the final with Ed McCulloch. Unfortunately, Tom's Corvette broke and the "Ace" soloed for the victory. He qualified #2 at the IHRA Bayou Nationals but failed to reach the finals. He didn't have a very good outing at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His best of 6.11-238.47 in qualifying put him in the #15 spot and he lost to eventual winner McCulloch in the first round. He sure changed that around at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, where he found himself in the winners circle. It started with a 5.70-257.87 that qualified #3. An easy 5.99-242.06 advanced past the first round when John Martin failed to show. In the second round, his 5.78-249.16 beat Tim Grose's 5.89-239. In the semifinals, a 5.85-236.71 beat Mark Oswald's 5.94-251 in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. That put him into the final against Billy Meyer. Meyer smoked the tires and Tom roared to a 5.78-249.16 for the victory. He continued to run well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where after qualifying #4 with a 5.77-252.17, he made his way to the semifinals before having problems and shutting off to a 6.43-143.28 loss to Bernstein's 5.72-255. The following week (June 22), he was runner up to Oswald at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. He was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on June 29. McEwen qualified #6 with a 5.85-240.77 and a first round 5.82-233.28 beat Jim Head but in the second round, he went up in smoke and lost to Johnny West's 5.79-259 in the "Hawaiian." Milan, Michigan, was his next stop on July 6 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tom qualified #6 in the eight car field with a 5.99-227.27, and once again, he smoked the tires, losing to McCulloch in the first round.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. Ran 5.86 247 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. | Dale's season didn't turn out the way he would have liked. For the first time in ten years of competition, he failed to reach a single final round in NHRA or IHRA events. He did run 5.60's with a 5.690 at Pomona and a 5.64 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Pulde started the season with a first round loss to Frank Hawley at the NHRA Winternationals. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00-243.90 but in the first round the Firebird broke advancing Al Segrini. The first IHRA event was the Winternationals held at Darlington on March 25. Dale qualified #11 with a 6.11 but once again he lost in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he lasted until the second round where he fouled against eventual winner Billy Meyer. Rockingham hosted the second IHRA race on May 6, the Pro-Am Championships. Pulde ran well but failed to make the finals. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had an eight car field that made qualifying tough. Pulde made the show and beat Jim White in the first round with an engine destroying 5.99-218. Unfortunately, he was unable to race Meyer in the semifinals due to the damage. He had another semifinal finish at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Pulde had downed Tom McEwen in round two with a 5.83-227.84 before losing to Meyer in the semis. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00-234.98 but in the first round, McEwen's 5.93-247 stopped his off pace 7.39-120.16. Dale got a final round appearance at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #2 with a 5.86 and made it into the final, but the car broke and Hawley soloed for the win in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He qualified #6 with a 5.87-232.55 at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada but again failed to reach the finals.

Notes: Ed qualified #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73-253.52. In the first round, his 5.82-240.64 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.69-250. Luck was on the "Ace's side at the NHRA Gatornationals. He didn't qualify very well with a 5.98-233.16 (#14). He went on to win the race by beating Brad Tuttle in the first round where they both ran 5.74 (Ed at 257.58). In round two, his troubled 6.67-197.36 advanced when Mark Oswald boiled the hides in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In the semifinals, his tire smoking, off pace 6.22-234 beat Scott Kalitta, putting him in the final against another long time veteran, Tom McEwen. The "Mongoose" had to be considered the favorite based on his 5.67 in the semifinals. Unfortunately, the race never came off as McEwen broke, so Ed singled for the title with an 11.25-69.63. Due to the Gatornationals being rain delayed from March 16 to 23, Ed was unable to run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as they were booked on the same day. He did make IHRA's second race, the Bayou Nationals on April 13. There, he made it into the final before losing to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. A week later he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.86-256.41. He won but once again, good old racing luck played a part. He beat McEwen in the first round and in round two his 6.02-242 got around Billy Meyer's 6.12-244 in a tire smoking contest. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.95-252.10 when the "Blue Max," with John Lombardo on board, broke a transmission. In the final, the "Ace" lined up with Jim Head. Jim had been having his share of problems, running 6.22 and 8.38 in the previous two rounds. The two left together in the final and Ed got the victory with a 6.00-247.52 over Head's right there 6.00-250. It was a short field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun National in June. The sixteenth qualifier ran 11.84 and still made the show! McCulloch qualified #14 with a 6.54-168.28. In the first round he slowed to a 6.65-162.68 that lost to Kalitta's 5.80-252. Crewchief, Bernie Fedderly was still having trouble dialing in the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15. A best of 6.00-231.12 qualified #12 but Ed lost to McEwen in the first round. A week later (June 22), the team was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Once again McEwen beat him, but this time in was in the semifinals. Only twelve cars showed for the eliminator at the NHRA Grandnationals so qualifying was easy. Ed qualified #9 with a 5.92-249.03. His first round 5.94-250.69 lost to Johnny West's 5.78-234 in the "Hawaiian." July opened with the team at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.91-247.93 qualified #3 in the eight car field. Ed got a measure of satisfaction in the first round when his 6.01-245.90 beat a tire smoking McEwen. But in the semifinals, he lost to Oswald. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Fedderly tuned the car to a 5.88-244.69 in qualifying (#13). But in round one, the "Mongoose" McEwen stopped him. Ed qualified really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 5.87-234.19 got the #4 spot in the thin air. Unfortunately, he again lost in the first round, this time to Steve Hodkinson. By this time the team needed something good to happen. And it did. They rolled into Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals in the middle of August. Ed qualified so-so with a 5.88-249.30 for the #8 spot in the show. He beat Della Woods in the first round with a 5.96-241.93. In round two, a 5.86-254 beat West and in the semifinals, his 5.98-252 beat a tire smoking Oswald. That put him in the final with his nemesis McEwen. Ed had problems and shut off to a 22.44-30.82 while Tom motored to the victory with a 5.81-254. Still it was a good showing for the "Miller American" team. There was one more stop to make before Indy, and that was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Ed qualified #6 in the eight car show and beat Head in round one before losing to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Then it was on to Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Ed always ran well at Indy, but not so much in '86. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.88-245.73. In the first round he survived a tire smoking battle with Craig Epperly that saw Ed's 6.41-243 beat Craig's quicker 6.34-220. In the second round, McCulloch ran 5.92-226.52 but it wasn't enough, as he lost to Oswald's 5.64-260.
