Notes: In Jan, Johnson was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.83/245.23. He was up against Paul Smith driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo in the first round. Rick went into some hard tire shake and shut off. He started his '85 NHRA season by qualifying #8 with a 5.84/250.69 at Pomona for the Winternationals. Rick beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.66/259.81, and in round two, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.58/263.62 that beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/235. He failed to back up the ET for a new national record. In the semifinals, his 5.92/249 lost to eventual winner Al Segrini's 5.79/253. Atlanta held an eight-car show on March 10, and Johnson qualified #1 with a 5.79/251.39. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 5.71/256.41 over a tire-smoking Ed McCulloch. In the semifinals, it was he who smoked the tires, and he lost to Smith's 6.36/220. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.72/255.82. But in round one, he fouled against Tom Hoover. Rick was back at Firebird on April 6 for the Coors Funny Car Championships. All eight cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. A first-round 6.44/237.46 lost to John Force's 5.89/202, and in his second race, his 6.02/252.10 (Top Speed), lost to Gary Densham's 6.03/231. But he made the final when Force had a blower explode in his second race and could not run the final. So once again, Johnson lined up against Densham. Once again, Gary won; this time, his 5.98/238 got him the victory over Rick's 6.06/252.10 runner-up effort. He qualified #3 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.81/256.99 (Top Speed), but bad luck hit him in the first round, when he lost a blower belt against Ron Correnti. Things went well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he dominated the eight-car Funny Car program. Rick set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.72/254.33. A 5.76/252 beat Jim Dunn in round one, and in the semifinals, he beat Jim's son Mike with a 5.94/247 over the younger Dunn's 5.98/242. He took the victory with a 5.94/241.28 over Densham's 6.34/234 Daytona in the final. On May 11, he was at Firebird Raceway for a best-of-three-match race against Force. Unfortunately, he lost two straight with times of 5.97/244.56 and 5.93/240.90 compared to John's 5.83/243 and 5.79/240. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.89/251.81. A first-round 6.01/245.09 beat Jody Smart, but in round two, his 6.03/242.58 lost to Force's 5.97/244. The "Hawaiian" made a rare IHRA appearance at Bristol for the Springnationals. Rick qualified #10, but he lost early. Next, he was off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.81/251.25 qualified #4, but a quick-leaving John Collins beat Rick's 5.90/249.03 in the first round, with a 5.93/241. He then made the long tow to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals pay off by winning his first NHRA National event. He was running well, making laps of 5.76, 5.77, and 5.79 in qualifying, so it was apparent, he was tough. Rick's 5.76 at 254.38 was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. Round one saw his 5.91/251.25 beat Smith's 6.04/249 in the "Custom Body" car. A 5.87/248.20 took care of Billy Meyer in round two, and a semifinal 5.69/250.13 beat John Lombardo's 5.86/250 in the "Blue Max." In the final, he was up against Bernstein, and the two had a good race with Johnson's 5.72/260.26 (Top Speed and a new track record) getting the victory over Kenny's 5.79/250. Invented the lovely "cowcatcher" nose piece to answer Kenny Bernstein's 1985 long-nose Ford Tempo body. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1985. He was the quickest car in the sport for most of the 1985 season until Bernstein went 5.55 at Rockingham Fall. Ran 5.985/235.60 in runner-up effort at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway 8/85. |

Notes: Confirmed 262.08 at Ennis at first nitro match race at the track (before the national event) August 1986. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Billy started the '86 season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.75/241.28. He was a little late out of the gate in the first round, as his 5.85/242.58 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.91/241 in Joe Pisano's Daytona. He attended an eight-car show at Atlanta where he qualified #3 with a 6.20/210.28. He shut off against Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Meyer qualified #3 with a 5.76/251.11. He beat Jim Head in the first round, before smoking the tires and losing to Tom McEwen in round two. Firebird raceway hosted the Coor's Funny Car race in April and Billy had tire-smoking problems on both his runs; he lost to John Force and Johnny West with times of 12.62 and 6.38/205.01. We needless to say, he failed to make it to the finals. On April 20 he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he ran 5.75/252.10 to qualify #3. He beat Tom Hoover before smoking the tires to a 6.12/244.16 loss to Ed McCulloch who also had traction problems at 6.02/242. In May, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet. He ran 5.84/252.80 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He stepped up to a 5.77/250 in the first round, to beat Rodney Flournoy's 6.46 Firebird, but in round two, a 5.78/253.52 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.76/245. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 5.75/256.99 qualified #4. In round one, he beat Paul Smith's 5.99/230 with a 5.76/253.66. A second round 5.89/241.80 advanced when Head got out of shape and crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, a 5.86/245.40 beat Johnny West's 5.94/244 in the "Hawaiian." That put him in the final against McEwen. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost with an 8.37/94.59 while the "Goose" took the victory with a 5.78/249. Meyer qualified #5 with a 5.83/242.65 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. At the end of June, he was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.84/240.64 qualified #5 for the show. In the first round, Billy's ailing 9.22/91.53 advanced when Bruce Larson smoked the tires and shut off. In the second round, he fouled away a 5.81 and lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.67. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Billy qualified #4 with a 5.66/255.82. He beat Head in the first round, but in the second round the Mustang broke on the line giving Hoover a free ride into the semifinals. He lost early at the NHRA Mile High Nationals as well, after qualifying #6 with a 5.91/191.53. Meyer qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.88/245.23. It was dreaded because if you qualified in that spot, you faced the number one qualifier in your first race. That's exactly what Billy did, but he lucked out when low qualifier Bernstein fouled away a 5.81 while Meyer motored into the second round with a 6.12/180.00. In the second round, he ran a 5.96/238.09 that lost to Hoover's 5.91/256. |

Notes: In January, Hoover started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He was driving his new Firebird Trans Am. It was an eight-car field, and he ran 5.91/227.27 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.97/238.09 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.95/238. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.68/252.31. In the first round, both Hoover and Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car ran 5.76 (Hoover at 229.65), but Oswald won. On March 15, Tom was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 5.81/248.61 (Top Speed). He advanced to the final, where he faced Jim Head. In the final, he slowed to 6.01/228, which lost to Jim's 5.66 track record pass. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.68/254.16. Once again, Hoover lost in round one, when Kenny Bernstein's 5.58/261 beat his 5.73/252.88. He didn't race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race. Hoover was back in Atlanta on April 26 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.76/254.38 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 5.99/233.34 advanced when Tom McEwen exploded a supercharger. In the second round, his 5.88/231.36 lost to McCulloch's 5.66/260. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lost to Oswald in the first round. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as it was postponed one week due to rain and run on May 31, the same day Tom was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Tom sold the car to Gary Page in England. Tom ran a confirmed 260.94 at Englishtown 87. Where was the 264 run? He went 5.87/234 at the AHRA Spokane Finals 8/87. Photo from Columbus 1987. | Update on "264 run" He ran that in his #1 Qualifying performance at Ennis during the Motorcraft Funny Car Challenge on 8/1/87 with a 5.592 ET. - Rob McCabe |

Notes: Bazemore & Evans got Funny Car in lieu of back pay. Photo from 1989 Gatornationals, where Whit ran his best 1989 times. Did Combis still own the car at this point (his name is still on the door)? Until we know that, we are listing the team twice in 1989. |

Notes: Pulde always ran well at Pomona and continued to do so at the '86 NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.848/250.69 and improved to a 5.691/250.00 in the first round while beating Ed McCulloch's 5.827/240.64. A 5.777/244.56 advanced into the semifinals when Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian" for the first time, crossed the center line and ran 6.313/159.85. Dale smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 13.096/61.09 loss to John Force's 5.756/255.68. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.794/255.97 qualified #4. Rain came and postponed the race from March 16 to the 23rd, but Pulde was scheduled to run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and left Gainesville to run the IHRA event. He was probably happy that he did as he won the race. He qualified #2 and made his way to the final against Paul Smith, whom he beat with a 5.68/254.23 (Low ET and Top Speed). Dale was the number one qualifier at ADRA Spokane 8/86 at 5.747/257.14. At the NHRA Winston Finals with the RATT War Eagle, Pulde Qualified #9 with a 5.737/260.56. Pulde would face #1 Qualifier Johnny West in Round 1, running 5.809/250.62 to defeat West's 5.909/248.89. Pulde faced #13 Qualifier Jim Head in round 2, where Pulde won with a 5.868/248.27 while Head drifted toward the retaining wall and lost at 7.676/106.87. In the semis, Pulde faced #7 qualifier Billy Meyer, where Pulde Smoked the tires & watched the eventual runner-up Meyer streak away to the win at 5/712/246.71 as Dale's 10.096/76.69 followed. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Finished #3 in NHRA points in '85. - Mark York |

Notes: John kicked off his NHRA season at Pomona, qualifying #14 at 5.693/255.53 and winning round one over Billy Meyer with a 5.732/251.25. He then surprised Mark Oswald with a 5.838/209.05 over Mark's shutoff pass. Invading Aussie Graeme Cowin stopped John in the semis in a good 5.760/259.81 to 5.925/259.81 match. John kept it going at Gainesville, qualifying #13 at 5.829/250.06, but Doc Halladay defeated him in round one. John stayed consistent, qualifying at Atlanta with a 5.812/253.39 that took the #9 slot. He was now using a Dodge Daytona body. He again did not get past the first-round, as Kenny Bernstein got around his shutoff pass. John tried the high altitude of Bandimere for the Mile High Nationals. He only went 6.247/228.83, but that was good enough to claim the bump spot with three competitors on the outside. But the first-round told the same story. Another eight-second shutoff and Billy Meyer advancing. John turned it around at the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. He went 5.693/260.26 for the #7 qualifying position, and he parlayed that into a nice 5.598/261.17 first-round win over Darrell Amberson. In round two, John slowed to the 6.40s, and Billy Meyer took advantage of that with a 5.749 win. Away from the NHRA tour, John went 5.81/244 at AHRA Spokane Finals in August and won the race over Craig Epperly in Ray Strasser's Corvette. John was at the Texas Motorplex on October 4 for the NHRA Chief Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.610/258.91. In the opening round, he got some revenge on Graeme Cowin with a 5.726/252.52 that beat Cowin's smoked-in and shut-down effort. In round two, it was John who smoked the tires against Don Prudhomme. Martin shut down to a 7.910/105.60. He followed the NHRA tour to Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals. Unfortunately, his 5.894/246.50 best was good for the third alternate. John attended the NHRA Finals to wrap the season. He did not qualify there, as his 5.773/251.25 was the sixth alternate in a field with 31 cars trying to get in. All in all, it was a good season for the independent campaigner. |

Notes: Dan was at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals. Unfortunately, his 6.008/212.36 best ended up as the sixth alternate. That was Dan's only NHRA national event this year. | Former Shady Glenn car. We need to confirm the 260. Dan Jr. only remembers 240. Rahn Tobler and Shirley Muldowney were involved. Shirley signed his license! Rahn moved back to Michigan after a large earthquake. He was about to convert the car to Shirley's engine combo, but it never happened. - Dan Horan Jr., Racin & Rockin Radio, 12/01/14 |

Notes: Dal was driving the Firebird at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #14 with a 5.883/236.90. Mark Oswald beat him in round one, 5.59/264 to 6.055/183.56. He also ran 5.96 at 245 at IHRA St. Louis 1990, then was the first alternate at Denver at 6.258/215.31. He ran a great 5.637/257.14 to qualify #15 at Ennis Fall but fouled against Jim White in round one, tossing out a 5.607/253.95. That was Dal's last NHRA event of the year. |

Notes: This car was literally put together in the pits at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals by Mike Hamby and Dale Pulde. On the car's maiden run, Dale ran 6.10/183. After some adjustments to the spoiler, he came back out and ran 6.01/247. On his first official qualifying pass and third run ever on the car, Pulde blasted it to a 5.91/252.80. On Saturday, he ran an amazing 5.76/263 in the heat of the day (85 degrees). Then during the "Night of Fire," Dale ran 5.69/256.41 to take the pole. Pulde went on to win by beating Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.71/260. He ran 5.68/260 in the second round to beat John Collins. Another 5.69 at 257 beat Kenny's quicker 5.66 (Low ET) at 258 in the semifinal. In the final, he ran Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" broke on the line, and Pulde took the victory. They next towed to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a 5.97/252.38 qualified #13. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, with a 5.86/251. In the second round, Pulde's tire-smoking 6.56/152.18 lost to Bernstein's 5.74/249. The "High Life Warrior" picked up another win at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. Dale qualified #1 with a 5.66/249.30. A first-round 5.84/236.84 beat Dominic Santucci, and in the semifinals, he beat Joe Amato's 5.98/221 with a 5.70/249.30. In the final, he beat Bernstein with a 5.90/247.25. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Dale ran 5.89/253.23 to qualify #12. Ed McCulloch fouled against him in the opening round, and he advanced with a 5.82/248.48. But in round two, he smoked the tires once again and lost to Don Prudhomme. The following week (July 7), he was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #1, and his 5.78/252 beat Tim Grose's 5.85/233 for yet another victory in the final. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.71/249 qualified #5, and in round one, his 5.78 advanced when Ron Correnti shut off with problems. But in round two, the car went into a wheelstand, and he lost to eventual winner Bernstein. He then went to St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals, and he bagged that one as well, stopping John Pott in the final. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Pulde qualified #1 by resetting both ends of the track record with a 5.73/251.39. He ran 5.87/238.09 he beat Jim Head in the opening round. A round two 5.83/244.56 beat Rick Johnson's 6.04/229 in the "Hawaiian." Another 5.83 at 245.23 stopped a tire-smoking John Force in the semifinal. Once again, he faced the red and white "Budweiser King" of Bernstein in the final. The two had a great race that saw Pulde's 5.81/250.69 come out second best to Kenny's 5.79/245. | At the NHRA Castrol GTX Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, Pulde qualified #2 with a 5.612/255.24. He Defeated #10 qualifier Graeme Cowin in round 1 with a 5.651/251.53 & #6 qualifier John Force in round 2 with a 5.722/246.44, but lost to #8 qualifier & eventual winner Tim Grose in the Semis. | Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. |
