Notes: Car had that really wild "shovel" nose on it, also ran it in '86. This car is the one Billy used 3 spark plugs per cylinder on until outlawed by NHRA. Photo from Milan, MI 1985. Billy started the '85 season by qualifying #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 6.03-239.36. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Billy lasted until round two where Ed McCulloch's 5.91-254 beat his 5.97-243. A best of 5.93-229.00 failed to qualify at the Gatornationals but he rebounded with a runner-up finish at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro Am Championships. In the semifinal,he stopped Kenny Bernstein's 5.95-243 with a 5.88-250. In the final,he faced Pulde and they both ran 5.80's (Billy's at top speed of the meet,261.62), but Dale got the win. He lost early in Atlanta for NHRA's Southern Nationals after qualifying #8 with a 5.93-208.04. Meyer lost early at the next NHRA race as well, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He had qualified #3 with a 5.84-247.38 but in the first round he crossed the centerline while racing Ron Correnti. Things weren't much better at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Billy made another final round appearance at the NHRA Springnationals in June. He had qualified #6 with a 5.83-236.22 and beat Jim Head in the first round. A second round 5.81-242 beat a tire smoking John Force and in the semi finals, a 5.82 beat John Collins' 5.94. In the final, Bernstein's 5.81-251 gave Meyer a runner-up finish. Only 15 cars showed up for the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada but Billy still ran hard in qualifying running a 5.70-256.70 for the #2 spot.

Notes: Collins started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran a 5.85-248.48 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, that set up a first round meeting with low qualifier John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." Collins lost that race. At the Gatornationals, a 5.89-249.03 qualified #15 and in the first round he picked up to a 5.76-246.71 to beat Jody Smart. In round two,he ran a 5.74-256.11 to beat a tire smoking Don Prudhomme. But in the semifinals, Collins had to shut off to a 10.15 due to severe tire shake. He lost to Kenny Bernstein. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals in April, John qualified #14 with a 5.99-243.11. He beat Al Segrini in the first race before losing to Ed McCulloch in round two. He qualified #15 at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals with a 6.01-243.50. John beat Tom McEwen in the first round before losing to Ron Correnti in round two. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #8. He beat Ed McCulloch in the first round before losing in round two.

Notes: This car was illegal after 1987 because of those teenie-tiny wheel bubbles on the front fenders. thanks to Bernstein & Head. Van Sant painted the word "BUICK" on the sides of this Mustang that year in protest. | Went 5.71, 225 at Tulsa and then ended up in the sand trap. Need to confirm the year on those times and event.

Notes: Pulde started the '85 season with the Firebird. At Pomona for the Winternationals, Dale qualified #7 with a 5.83-251.67. A first round 5.84 beat Billy Meyer and a second round 5.74-252 beat John Force's 5.76-258. He had a little luck in the semifinals when he broke but his opponent Ed McCulloch fouled and Pulde found himself in the final. He ran Al Segrini for the title but his 6.02-233.52 finished runner-up to Al's 5.78-227. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Dale lasted until the semifinals where he lost to McCulloch due to crossing the centerline. Crewchief Mike Hamby argued hard with IHRA officials saying that the car didn't cross the centerline, but the decision held. At the Gatornationals, a 5.72-244.69 qualified #6. Pulde beat Jim Head in the first round with a 5.87-243.63. In round two, a 5.91-252 advanced when McCulloch lost a blower. But in the semifinals, Dale lost to John Lombardo's 5.76-255 in the "Blue Max." At the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, a 5.93-246.71 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in which Pulde smoked the tires and lost. The "old" Firebird proved it could still win by winning the IHRA Pro Am Championships at Rockingham in May. Dale beat Billy Meyer in the final even though they both ran 5.80's. Pulde's was at 254. The last race the Firebird was used at was the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Once again the old car proved itself by qualifying first with a 5.74 (low ET) at 251.81. Unfortunately, Dale smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Don Prudhomme. At the next event, the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, they literally finished the new Buick Somerset in the pits for the race. They went on to qualify first and win the race.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. Ran 5.94-240 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. | Prudhomme had an interesting season. He was one of only six drivers to run in the 5.60's. In six IHRA starts he made the final round in four of them but in NHRA competition, he was winless for the second straight year. In fact, he failed to make an NHRA final. The last time that happened was in '72. Don started the season in the best way, by winning. He won the AHRA Winternationals in Jan. He had qualified first with a 6.23 on the tricky surface. He advanced past the first round when opponent Bill McCahill crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, a 6.46-218 beat Bryan Raines in the "Impulse" Mustang. A final round 6.66-208 took the victory over Henry Harrison who had earlier set low ET and top speed at 6.15-232. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A first round 5.95-217.91 beat Ed McCulloch's quicker 5.90-243 but he shut off with problems in the second round letting John Force single. At the Gatornationals, 24 cars showed for the sixteen car field. Don ran 5.94-240.64 to qualify #13. Once again he had problems and shut off, this time in the first round, advancing John Collins. Things went much better the following week (March 25) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. The track record going into this race was a 6.02 by Raymond Beadle. Prudhomme broke both ends of the track record in qualifying first with a 5.79-254.23. He got past the first round easily and then beat Force's 6.00-241 in the second round with a 5.93-241. In the semifinals, both Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and Don ran 5.96's but the "Snake" got the win. In the final he met up with his old friend, Tom McEwen. Don had problems and limped across with a 15.58-58.17 while McEwen ran 5.91-248 for the victory. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, Don qualified #10 with a 5.92 but he lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Also in May he ran at Famoso for the Bakersfield meet. An eight car FC show was run and 10 cars attempted to qualify. Don ran 5.81 to qualify #2. A first round 5.72 at a career best speed of 257.14 beat Gary Thompson but he hurt his motor and was out of competition. Needless to say, that pass was good for low ET and top speed. Don failed to qualify for the eight car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified first at Bristol on June 3 for the IHRA Springnationals. A 5.74 (low ET) got the spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Meyer in the first round. On June 10 he qualified #5 with a 5.85-252.80 at the NHRA Springnationals. A first round 5.87-246.57 beat Paul Smith, while a second round 5.99-212.36 advanced when Force broke. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 12.24-69 that lost to McEwen's 5.87-251. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, he qualified #5 with a 6.01 but lost to Jim Head's 6.06 in round two with a 6.13.

Notes: Followed Joe Amato into the 260 mph zone by minutes. Also nice 5.80-255.68 at IHRA Cincinnati. | Bernstein ran well in '84 becoming the first FC driver to run 260. He had benefited from wind tunnel testing the previous December. He ended up finishing third in the NHRA year long points chase and if it were not for Sherm Gunn, he may have finished higher. Gunn beat Bernstein in the first round three times on the NHRA tour. Still with the addition of an on-board computer to aid crew chief Dale Armstrong, Kenny was always a threat to win. He started the season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway in Jan. A final round 5.98-248.61 beat Tom McEwen's 6.07-236. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified first with a 5.83 (low ET) at 252.80. Unfortunately, a first round 5.90-251.91 lost to John Force's 5.89-247. He made history at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals in March. He qualified #2 with a 5.78-256.41. In the first round he beat Tom Anderson with a 5.84-256.41. In round two, a 5.79-257.87 advanced when Mark Oswald broke, and in the semifinals, a 5.79-256.41 beat a tire smoking Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." In the final, he ran his historic 5.80-260.11 to win over John Collins' 5.92-245. This was the last 260 mph run he would make this season as well as his only NHRA win of '84. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, a 5.88-254.23 qualified #2 and he lasted until round two where McEwen's 5.87-245 put the Tempo's 6.04-245 on the trailer. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Kenny qualified first with a 5.78-255.68. He made it into the final where he ran 5.80-254.23 for the runner-up spot to Billy Meyer's 5.73-252. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships and ran well but failed to make the finals. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified fourth in the eight car field and lost in the first round when he smoked the tires and advanced Meyer's 5.94. He lost in the first round at the IHRA Springnationals as well. Another first round loss came at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.84-252.10 but in the first round smoked the tires and lost to Gunn. At the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada,a 5.96-252.80 qualified #12 but once again he lost early. Things went better the following week (July 8) at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he won by beating Don Prudhomme in the final. At Englishtown on July 15 for the NHRA Summernationanals, he qualified #5 with a 5.79 but broke a reverser after his burnout in the semifinals and giving eventual winner Beadle a single into the final. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he again made it as far as the semis before losing. On August 5, Kenny won his second IHRA event, the Summernationals at Edgewater Park near Cincinnati. He beat Oswald in the final with a 5.80-255.68 to Mark's 5.84-251. Mark got one back at the next race, the NHRA Northstar Nationals at Brainerd where he stopped Bernstein in the semifinals. At Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, Kenny qualified #2 with a 5.73-249.89 but he failed to reach the finals. The Budweiser King team had made enough points in qualifying at NHRA national events to be able to run in the Big Bud Shootout at Indianapolis. It was an eight car affair and in the first round, Kenny's 5.95-247.93 beat Dale Pulde's 5.97-246. In the semifinals, his 5.91-252.10 lost to McEwen's 5.84-254. For the running of the NHRA U.S. Nationals, Kenny qualified for the field with a 5.78-257.14 (#7). He beat a tire smoking Gunn in the first round with a 5.91 and in round two, a 5.84-249.30 beat Meyer who also smoked the tires. In the semifinals, a 5.74-250.69 advanced when Frank Hawley got out of shape in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and almost smacked the guardrail. In the final, he had problems and slowed to a 15.24-50.81 that lost to Jim Head's 5.96-254. A week later he was at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals where once again he ran well, but failed to reach the finals.
