Notes: John started the 1986 season with the Corvette at the NHRA Winternationals but converted to a new Cavalier by the Gatornationals. But he ran his best ET with the Corvette, qualifying #2 at Pomona at 5.643/260.86. He ran 5.704/252.10 in round one, to beat Ray Higley's 6.35/152. He took out Mike Dunn in round two, 5.750/252.10 to 5.90/250. John beat Dale Pulde in the semis, 5.756/255.68 to a 13-second shutoff. Tim Grose continued a 5.60 pace in the final with a 5.69/236.22 win over John's consistent but losing 5.757/254.95. John got the holeshot, but Dale drove around him by .022 seconds - about eight feet.

Notes: Mark was the second alternate at NHRA Somona at 10.948-76.50. He qualified #14 at Ennis at 5.644/259.06 and lost in round one when he broke against Jim White. That was the teams' only two NHRA national events. We need to confirm that they began the year in the Corvette.

Notes: Dale's season didn't turn out the way he would have liked. For the first time in ten years of competition, he failed to reach a single final round in NHRA or IHRA events. He did run 5.60s with a 5.690 at Pomona and a 5.64 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Pulde started the season with a first-round loss to Frank Hawley at the NHRA Winternationals. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00/243.90, but in the first round, the Firebird broke, advancing Al Segrini. His first IHRA event was the Winternationals held at Darlington on March 5. Dale qualified #11 with a 6.11, but he again lost in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he lasted until the second round, where he fouled against eventual winner Billy Meyer. Rockingham hosted the second IHRA race on May 6, the Pro-Am Championships. Pulde ran well but failed to make the finals. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had an eight-car field that made qualifying tough. Pulde made the show and beat Jim White in the first round, with an engine destroying 5.99/238. Unfortunately, he could not race Meyer in the semifinals due to the damage. He had another semifinal finish at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Pulde had downed Tom McEwen in round two with a 5.83/227.84 before losing to Meyer in the semis. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00/234.98, but in the first round, McEwen's 5.93/247 stopped his off pace 7.39/120. Dale got a final round appearance at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #2 with a 5.86 and made it into the final, but the car broke, and Hawley soloed to win in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He qualified #6 with a 5.87/232.55 at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. His 6.08/227.84 lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle's 5.96/247 in the "Blue Max." After Denver, he was still holding in the seventh spot in the NHRA points. Pulde qualified well at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals, but he lost early in eliminations. The next NHRA event on the schedule was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Dale qualified #4 and lasted until round two before losing to Jim Head. Dale ran 5.86/247 at ADRA Dragway 42. Photo from Indy 1984.

Notes: Ed qualified #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/253.52. In the first round, his 5.82/240.64 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.69/250. Luck was on the "Ace's side at the NHRA Gatornationals. He didn't qualify very well, with a 5.98/233.16 (#14). He went on to win the race by beating Brad Tuttle in the first round, where they both ran 5.74 (Ed at 257.58). In round two, his troubled 6.67/197.36 advanced when Mark Oswald boiled the hides in the "Candies and Hughes" car. His tire-smoking, off-pace 6.22/234 beat Scott Kalitta in the semifinals, putting him in the final against another long-time veteran, Tom McEwen. The "Mongoose" had to be considered the favorite based on his 5.67 in the semifinals. Unfortunately, McEwen broke, and the race never came off, so Ed singled for the title with an 11.25/69.63. Due to the Gatornationals being rain-delayed from March 16 to 23, Ed could not run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as they were booked on the same day. He did make IHRA's second race, the Bayou Nationals, on April 13. He made it into the final before losing to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. A week later, he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.86/256.41. He won, but once again, good old racing luck played a part. He beat McEwen in the first round, and in round two, his 6.02/242 got around Billy Meyer's 6.12/244 in a tire-smoking contest. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.95/252.10 when the "Blue Max," with John Lombardo on board, broke a transmission. In the final, the "Ace" lined up with Jim Head. Jim had been having his share of problems, running 6.22 and 8.38 in the previous two rounds. The two left together in the final, and Ed got the victory with a 6.00/247.52 over Head's right there 6.00/250. It was a short field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun National in June. The sixteenth qualifier ran 11.84 and still made the show! McCulloch qualified #14 with a 6.54/168.28. He slowed to a 6.65/162.68 in the first round, which lost to Kalitta's 5.80/252. Crewchief Bernie Fedderly was still having trouble dialing in the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15. A best of 6.00/231.12 qualified #12, but Ed lost to McEwen in the first round. A week later (June 22), the team was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Once again, McEwen beat him, but this time it was in the semifinals. Only twelve cars showed for the eliminator at the NHRA Grandnationals, so qualifying was easy. Ed qualified #9 with a 5.92/249.03. His first-round 5.94/250.69 lost to Johnny West's 5.78/234 in the "Hawaiian." July opened with the team at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.91/247.93 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Ed got a measure of satisfaction in the first round, when his 6.01/245.90 beat a tire-smoking McEwen. But in the semifinals, he lost to Oswald. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Fedderly tuned the car to a 5.88/244.69 in qualifying (#13). But in round one, the "Mongoose" McEwen stopped him. Ed qualified really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 5.87/234.19 got the #4 spot in the thin air. Unfortunately, he again lost in the first round, this time to Steve Hodkinson. By this time, the team needed something good to happen. And it did. They rolled into Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals in the middle of August. Ed qualified so-so with a 5.88/249.30 for the #8 spot in the show. He beat Della Woods in the first round, with a 5.96/241.93. A 5.86/254 beat West in round two, and his 5.98/252 beat a tire-smoking Oswald in the semifinals. That put him in the final with his nemesis McEwen. Ed had problems and shut off to a 22.44/30.82 while Tom motored to the victory with a 5.81/254. Still, it was a good showing for the "Miller American" team. There was one more stop before Indy, which was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Ed qualified #6 in the eight-car show and beat Head in round one, before losing to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Then it was on to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Ed always ran well at Indy, but not so much in '86. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.88/245.73. In the first round, he survived a tire-smoking battle with Craig Epperly that saw Ed's 6.41/243 beat Craig's quicker 6.34/220. In the second round, McCulloch ran 5.92/226.52, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to Oswald's 5.64/260. The following week (September 7), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #4, but he lost in round one. The team then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Ed's 5.80/251.04 qualified #6. Another 5.80 at 246.30 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.91/235 in the opening round. In round two, eventual winner Oswald ran 5.65/262 to beat McCulloch's 5.85/235.17.

Notes: Bazemore & Evans got Funny Car in place of back pay. Photo from 1989 Norwalk. We need to confirm when the team took over full control from Ted Combis. The Combis name was on the car through Gainesville. The only qualified 1989 times after that, were from the Cajun Nats. Was the car owned by B&E or Ted Combis at that point? | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Bazemore qualified #6 in the 8 car funny car field with a 5.647/254.24 & Drew #3 qualifier Art Hendey in round 1. Bazemore would win with a 5.756/252.81 to Hendey's losing 5.845/247.93. That would pit Bazemore against #2 Qualifier RC Sherman in the semis where Bazemore had problems & The Eventual winner Sherman took the W.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1986. Doc qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.65/255.31. Unfortunately, he got out of shape against Tim Grose in the first round and crossed the centerline. Halladay qualified well at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but he lost in round one. He raised some eyebrows at Gainesville, where he laid down a 5.649/254.59 to qualify #5 for the NHRA Gatornationals. To put that into perspective, he qualified ahead of names such as Don Prudhomme, Billy Meyer, Tom McEwen, and John Force. He beat John Martin in the opening round with a 5.81/223.93, but in round two, he slipped to a 5.95/241.28 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.59/263. In April, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.83/245.76. He faced Ed McCulloch in the first round, and Ed smoked the tires. It looked as though Halladay would win easily, but then he broke and blower belt. Ed's 6.01/252 came past to win over Doc's 6.17/186.37. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.01/240.64 beat Steve Hodkinson. He lost to eventual winner Bernstein in the semifinals. Tulsa held its yearly independent Spring race, and Doc qualified #1 for the eight-car show with a 5.89 (Low ET) at 241.28. Once again, he beat Hodkinson in the opening round, this time with a 6.22/200.89. But in the semifinals, Darrell Amberson stepped up to run a career-best 5.93/245 to beat Halladay's 6.14/238.09. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 for the eight-car field and defeated Amberson in round one. He lost in the semifinal to eventual winner Mike Dunn who was driving Joe Pisano's car. He won the Union Grove Olympics of Drag Racing event, stopping Mike Edstrom in the final. Doc earlier had set Low ET with a 5.79. It was then off to Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. Doc had qualified for every IHRA race of the season, and his 5.66 easily made the show. He then beat Pat Walsh with a 5.74/252.10 in the first round before smoking the tires in the semifinal and losing to Mark Oswald. He moved up to second in the IHRA Funny Car points chase behind Oswald with the semifinal finish. He competed at Brainerd for the Crown FC Championships, and while he failed to reach the final, he did run some good times, such as 5.90/251.39 in beating McEwen.

Notes: John started the year at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.80/245.23. In the first round, he lost a supercharger, and his 6.00/200.89 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.99/238. He qualified #3 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.73/256.41. A first-round 5.76/253 beat Jody Smart, but another 5.76/258 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.74/252 in round two. | At the Sacramento Raceway Winter Classic 4 Car Funny Car show, Force ran 5.69/247.94 in Round 1 & the Low ET 5.65/244.57 in Round 2 & then was the Runner Up to Rick Johnson where Force ran a 5.81/245.91 losing effort to Johnson's 5.72/254.24. | He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.76. He lasted until round two when a spark plug blew out of the cylinder, and he had to shut off, giving Dale Pulde a solo into the semifinals. At the Gatornationals, John again qualified #3, this time with a 5.71/254.66. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.55/204.26 loss to Prudhomme's 5.78/251. John won the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza over Paul Smith in the Custom Body car, 6.29/229.88 to a tractionless 7.36/125.87. National Dragster indicated that "Force was batting about .735 at Raceway Park and had an impressive big-buck operation with the Coke-backed 'Vette." Force ran a 5.85/254.09 at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals to qualify #5. A 6.01/251.25 in the first round, lost to Smart's 5.95/224. His next stop was at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals. He made it into the final against Tom Hoover but was forced to shut off on the line with a water leak. On May 19, he was at Alamo Dragway for an eight-car show. John ran 5.91/237.46 to qualify first and then beat Doc Halladay in the first round with a 5.90/240.64. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 5.84/250.69 take and took out Johnny West. In the final, he met up with Ron Correnti driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo. John made his worst run of the meet, a 6.00/236.22, but it was enough to beat Ron's off-pace 6.45/191. His speed of 250 was the Top Speed of the meet, beating out eight Top Fuel dragsters, including Dick LaHaie and Chris Karamesines. He got a semifinal finish at the Cajun Nationals after qualifying #4 with a 5.85/241.54. He beat John Lombardo in the "Blue Max" with a 5.97/240.58 in the first round, and a 5.97/244 beat Rick Johnson in round two. But he smoked the tires in the semis and lost to Kenny Bernstein. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #3, but he lost early. A 5.75/245.76 qualified #2 at National Trail for the Springnationals. He beat Mark Oswald in round one with a 5.89/247.38 but fell victim to tire smoke in round two, and his 6.29/223.32 was lost to Billy Meyer's 5.81/242. He ran at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Meet in June but had an oil pump break in the first round against Joe Amato's Mustang. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car show at the Grandnationals in Canada, so Force didn't push it in qualifying, running a 6.02/239.36 for the last spot in the field. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.50/179.49 and lost to John Lombardo's 5.93/246 in the "Blue Max." At the NHRA Summernationals, John qualified #3 with a 5.708/257.28. He beat Prudhomme and Jim Head in the first two rounds before smoking the tires in the semifinals and losing to Bernstein. Kenny went to Denver for NHRA's next event, the Mile High Nationals, where he qualified #3 with a 5.84/233.16. He beat John Collins in the first round with a 5.88/235.60, and in round two, his 5.95/243.24 beat Meyer's 5.99/222. This put him up against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. Dale had been running well, hitting 5.83 in his second-round win, so crew chief Austin Coil dialed in a little too much power for their race, and Force smoked the tires while Pulde ran another 5.83 to advance into the final. John skipped the NHRA Northstar Nationals but was back on tour for the US Nationals at Indy. Before the big race, he was one of the eight qualifiers for the Big Bud Shootout. Unfortunately, he was paired against Bernstein in his first-round race, and Kenny's 5.69 beat John's 5.78. The following day, John ran a strong 5.705/255.24 for the actual race to qualify #3. The field was tough, as attested by his first-round win. Force cut a good light, and his 5.83/253.52 held off Graeme Cowin's better 5.81/253. Head had problems and shut off in the second round, while John advanced with a 5.79/246.30. He and Pulde had a good race in the semifinals, but Dale's 5.79/249 outmuscled John's close 5.82/257.58. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. He lost a blower on a 5.72/232.55 pass on his last qualifying attempt. The time was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. He earlier had run 240.51. A first-round 5.97/230.88 advanced when Roy Harris lost fire. But in round two, his ailing 6.03/198.35 lost to Pulde's 5.72/246. He went to Englishtown for the following week (September 15) for the US All-Pro Funny Car Championships. The two lowest ET cars would meet in the final of the ten-car show. Force qualified for the final with a 5.89, and Bruce Larson made the other half of the final with a 5.85. John won with a 5.91/248.56 (Top Speed) over Larson's 6.06/210. John also ran 5.825/243 in winning the ADRL Kansas City International Raceway event in 8/85. John's best NHRA ET was 5.705 at Indy. Did John run 5.65 somewhere this year (ADRA or IHRA)? 1985 ADRA Champion. Confirmed 5.89/245.23, 5.89/248.61, and 5.87/252.10 in winning ADRA Spokane. The best NHRA national event times were 5.705 at Indy and 258.17 at Pomona.

Notes: At the end of May, Gilbertson was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There were sixteen FC's that attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. His 6.12/236.50 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round of eliminations, he lost to Chuck Etchells. Gilbertson was running at his first NHRA National Event at the Summernationals at Englishtown. Twenty-one cars were attempting to qualify, and his 5.696/250.76 was the third alternate. Bob ran 5.66/252 on a single in Round 2 of the 1990 US All Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown (Video in link).

Notes: John made his driving debut in the "Blue Max" at Pomona by qualifying #1 for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.68/255.68. He improved to a 5.66/254 in the first round, to beat John Collins. The 5.66 held up for a new NHRA record. He slipped to a 5.76/253 in the second round that lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.73/252. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.71/253.66. A first-round 5.77/251.81 beat Tim Grose and in round two, his 5.80/251 took out Tom McEwen. He advanced into the final by beating Dale Pulde in the semifinal with a 5.76/255. He met Kenny Bernstein in the final and John had trouble and shut off to a 13.10-67.17 while Kenny got the victory with a 5.70/254. It was at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta that car owner Raymond Beadle debuted his new aerodynamic Mustang. The car ran well; John qualified it #4 with a 5.85/248.75. He made it all the way to the semifinals before losing a rod just off the line in his race against McCulloch. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Lombardo's best of 5.96/241.02 only qualified #12. He lost to John Force in the first round. Things went even worse at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where the best he could run in qualifying was a 6.01/242.06 for the #14 spot on the grid. Billy Meyer took him out in the first round. At the end of June, the "Blue Max" team went up north to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. They qualified better running a 5.82/255.82 for the #8 spot. But Lombardo lost early. The next NHRA race was the Summernationals at Englishtown in mid-July. John qualified on the "bump" with a 5.97/239, but he lost in the first round, to Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." They made the trip to Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals in early August and qualified #5. A first-round 5.92/252.10 advanced, but Lombardo lost to Meyer in the second round. John lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round, at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He ran 6.10/241.93 to qualify #12 there. At Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, he lost to Collins in the first round, after qualifying #9 with a 5.88/247.93. He made enough points to qualify for the Big Bud Shootout, but in the first round, of the eight-car event run in conjunction with the NHRA US Nationals, he had problems and shut off against McCulloch. After having such a bad year, Indy turned things around for the team. Lombardo qualified #8 with a 5.74/256.99. In the first round, he recorded a 5.78/252 while beating Jim White. In the second round, his 5.77/250.55 beat Johnson, and another 5.77 at 252.66 beat Bernstein's 5.82/257 in the semifinals. In the final, they faced a tough competitor in Pulde. Dale was having one of his best seasons ever driving his new Buick Regal FC. But in the final, the "Max" prevailed with a 5.78/252.38 getting the victory over Pulde's 5.83/213. That was the highlight of the year for the team. After that, they went to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships, where John qualified #3. He failed to reach the finals. The team didn't go to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but did go to Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. John qualified #4 with a 5.72/247 and beat McCulloch in the first round. A great 5.68/249.30 in the second round lost to Pulde's 5.67/250. On September 29, Lombardo made it into the final at the IHRA World Nationals. He got there after winning a semifinal race with Jim Head where both ran 5.80 (Lombardo at 251). Unfortunately, the "Max" broke in the final, giving Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car an easy win. On October 6, the team elected to run at Darlington for the IHRA Stroh's Nationals rather than at the NHRA Fallnationals that was being run the same day. John qualified #2 behind Bernstein and lasted until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Paul Smith. At Pomona for the season ending NHRA World Finals, Lombardo qualified #9 with a 5.78/233.40. He lost to Bernstein in the first round.

Notes: Tim debuted his new Firebird in April at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Unfortunately, he ended up as the first alternate for the show with a best of 6.108/234.98. He did much better at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, qualifying #5 with a 5.873/230.65. A first-round 5.970/240.51 lost to Jim Head's 5.94/245. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Grose failed to qualify, with his 5.99/224 being the first alternate. Yet at the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.821/230.17. He slowed to 5.979/222.88 in a first-round loss to Dale Pulde. The following week (June 23), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Tim beat Bruce Larson in the first round with a 5.82/241.98, but in the semifinals, he fouled away a 5.87/241.93 against Kenny Bernstein's 5.78/243. The NHRA's next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 fuel Funny Cars showed, so you didn't have to run hard to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Tim ran a strong 5.716/248.48 to qualify #3. In the first round, he faced Bernstein, and both cars ran 5.84 (5.843/244 to Tim's 5.847/243.63), but Kenny got the win light. His next stop was Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He only qualified #10, but he beat Mark Oswald in the first round and worked his way into the final against Pulde. A good 5.85/233.16 finished runner-up to Dale's 5.78/252. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.669 at 242.06 to qualify #2 behind Bernstein's 5.62. A first-round 5.776/239.10 beat Billy Meyer, and in round two, his 5.825/240.00 took out John Collins. Grose slowed to 5.900/247.38 in the semifinals, but it was enough to beat Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." He was up against Bernstein in the final. It was a good, close race, but Kenny's 5.77/249 got the victory over Tim's 5.805/250.13. Tim qualified #10 at Bandimere at 6.056/225.00. In round one, he lost to Bernstein, 5.79/245 to 5.957/237.46. He qualified #13 at Brainerd at 5.927/240.64. In round one, he beat Billy Meyer, 6.008/239.36 to 6.48/239, but lost to John Collins in round two, 5.87/246 to 5.905/246.57. Tim qualified #10 at Indy at 5.754/258.17. Nemesis Bernstein got him in round one, again, 5.70/255 to 5.954/255.24. Tim broke through at Maple Grove, winning the inaugural NHRA Keystones. He qualified #8 at 5.745/234.78. In round one, he beat Bobby Lagana, 5.751/230.71 to 6.71/173. He beat Rick Johson in round two, 5.739/237.46 to 5.91/241. In round three, he beat Dale Pulde, 5.802/244.83, to a 13-second shut-off. In the final, he was up against Kenny Bernstein. Tim finally broke the curse, driving around a Bernstein holeshot to take a 5.821/237.96 to 5.887/234.74 win. Tim qualified #14 at Phoenix at 6.012/227.27. In round one, he lost a close one to Al Segrni, 6.00/244 to 6.036/248.28. At the World Finals, Tim qualified #13 at 5.857/248.34. In round one, he upset Dale Pulde, 5.849/243.11 to 5.88/250. Tim did not show up for his second-round race against Kenny Bernstein. His best times were the 5.669 at Englishtown and 258.17 at Indy.

Notes: Was also sponsored by High Performance World | If memory serves me correctly, this was Joe Pisano's '83 Camaro, formerly driven by Tripp Shumake, purchased by Cowin, then lengthened (with Pontiac nose & tail) while in the US in 1985. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Made a splash on the second half of the NHRA national event trail in 1985: Indy - #11 qualifier at 5.770/257.43. Lost a close one on a holeshot to John Force in round one, 5.835/253 to 5.813/253.80 (MOV - .015 seconds, about 5.5 feet). Maple Grove - #10 qualifier at 5.781/255.24. Shut off to a 14-second run against Dale Pulde in round one. Seattle - #10 qualifier at 5.924/247.25. Shut off to a 15-second run against Force in round one. Pomona World Finals - #7 qualifier at 5.776/257.87. Put a big holeshot on Al Segrini in round one, but Al came around him for the win, 5.760/248.48 to 5.829/243.50 (MOV .042 - about 16 feet). We need to confirm where 5.67/266 numbers came from. I remember them, but it was not on the 1985 NHRA national event trail. The 266.27 was reported in an Aussie drag mag in December 1985. Probably an IHRA national event.

Notes: Audio express, lost sponsorship. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Collins only ran two NHRA national events in '86, including the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #3 with a 5.67/252.10. In the first round, he beat a tire smoking Tom Hoover with a 5.80/210.77. In round two, he ran an off pace 6.10/167.28 that lost to eventual winner Tim Grose's 5.68. The other race was the NHRA World Finals, also at Pomona. There, his best of 5.90/248.61 failed to qualify (fifth alternate).

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. Qualified on bump at 85 Gators (5.921). The 5.671 was low qualifier at 85 US Nats. | Tom qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.81/254.66. A first-round 6.03 beat John Martin, but in round two he lost a close won to Al Segrini. His 5.95 lost to Al's 5.94. He lasted until the second round at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as well. There he smoked the tires and lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he barely made the show, qualifying #16 with a 5.92/249.58. A consistent 5.94/246.17 in the first round, beat Segrini, but once again he lost in round two. This time John Lombardo stopped him in the "Blue Max."
