Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Drag Racing List has 5.845/250.69 times from Maple Grove national event. | Larson attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.31/168.53 failed to make the field. In March he faced off with Dominic Santucci for a best of three match race at Englishtown. Larson won two straight running times of 6.28/230.76 and 6.17/238.09. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his best of 6.28/225.79 failed to qualify. He competed at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.22 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.00 before losing in the semifinals. Bruce got into the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 6.25/220.26 held the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Johnny West in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He qualified #13 with a 6.02/237.21 at the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Magazine Nationals and Larson was there, running a 6.03/233.76 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier (5.62) Kenny Bernstein. Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.00/144.69 that lost to Kenny's 5.75/254. In late June he followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. Only twelve cars showed for the sixteen-car show so qualifying wasn't a problem. Bruce ran a 6.12/240.12 to qualify #11. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off, losing to Billy Meyer's ailing 9.22/91. On July 2, Englishtown held its Funny Car Spectacular. Larson lost to West's 5.78/258 in the first round, with a 6.31/184.04, but he got back in on the "break rule." So in round two he ran Roy Harris, but Bruce had problems and shut off to a 9.10-86.04 that lost to Roy's 6.39/180. He was back at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals where he ran a 5.99/243.11 to qualify on the "bump." In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover. On August 3, he competed at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #8 with a 6.20 in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Scott Kalitta in the first round. The following week (August 9), he was at the US Funny Car Nationals where he ran a 6.19/236.22 to qualify #6 in the six car show. He lost early. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, his best of 6.07/237.59 was good for the sixth alternate spot. He also attempted to make the show at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but he had problems and failed to qualify with a 7.32/118.18 best. In the season long NHRA points chase he finished #19.

Notes: One of greatest out of nowhere runs in NHRA history. Jefferson previous best was in the 6.30's. Jefferson began the year with the old style Corvette that he ran at the NHRA D4 Green Valley race but was replaced with this new body. Car was destroyed early next year at the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington.

Notes: Day ran IHRA PHR Martin MI 1986 | In 1986, Norm came out with a new Corvette FC. His first NHRA National event with it was at Brainerd. In round one he was racing Tim Grose when his engine exploded just past the finish line. It was one of the worst Funny Car fires of that year. The chutes burned off and Norm hit the ditch where the car flipped and he was trapped inside. The safety crew had to punch a hole in the side of the car to get him out. Fortunately, Norm escaped with minor burns, but the car was destroyed. I posted a clip of it from ND. He stopped the timers with a 6.06/238.72 on the unfortunate pass. In qualifying, his 6.37/229.59 was #15 for the show.

He surprised himself and Mark Oswald in the first round, when his 5.945/212.16 beat Mark's tire-smoking 6.18/248 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In round two, he got a gift from Don Prudhomme when the "Snake" fouled away a 5.55/264, and Larry cruised into the semifinals with a 6.83/144.71. The ride ended when eventual winner Ed McCulloch beat him with a 5.42/268 to Larry's 6.01/205.76. Larry improved at NHRA Topeka, qualifying #11 at 5.694/258.84. In round one, he ran a decent 5.763/248.61 but lost to Bruce Larson's 5.40/266.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. | After a great season in '84, Jim returned to the Funny Car wars in '85 hoping for more. He started the season by qualifying #12 with a 5.94/249.44 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he slowed to an off pace 6.25 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.80. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.23 and lasted until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.89/244.69 qualified #14 and in the first round, he had problems and shut off to a 14.60-56.13 that lost to Dale Pulde's 5.87/243. Jim was having a tough time getting past the first-round and it continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lost to Jody Smart in the first frame. On a good note, he was qualifying for all these shows, a hard thing to do. He almost didn't make the field at the NHRA Southern Nationals where his 6.02/248.89 qualified #15. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. He made up for those early losses at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge on May 26. There he qualified #13 with a 5.98/246.44. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, and in round two, Prudhomme broke on his burnout, advancing Jim into the semifinals. In his semifinal race, a 5.93/245 beat Ron Correnti, putting him in the final against Bernstein. Head would have rather raced for the win than take a solo trip, but Bernstein broke on the line and Jim soloed with a 5.93/248.48 for the victory. Things reverted back to "normal" at the next few races. His next event was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot of the sixteen-car show with a 5.98, but he lost to Pulde in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.95/234.13, but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The pattern continued at the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.83/251.53 and lost early. Jim went on to win NHRA Brainerd. His best NHRA times were 5.718/254.66 at the Keystone Nationals. Did Jim run 261 on the IHRA tour this year or was that from another year?

Notes: Ran 5.698 at NHRA Maple Grove 9/85. | Ed ran 5.79/250 to qualify #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.94 beat Paul Smith and in round two, a 5.73/252 beat John Lombardo's 5.76/253 in the "Blue Max." He fouled against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. He did better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A second round 5.91/254 beat Billy Meyer and in the semifinals, a shut off-25.41/31 advanced when Pulde crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the final he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and won with a 5.93/253.52. McCulloch qualified #2 at Gainesville for the Gatornationals with a 5.70/250.83. A first-round 5.75/250.69 beat Oswald, but while running Pulde in the second round, he lost a blower and the race. The same thing happened at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro Am Championships. There Ed qualified #1 with a 5.73 (Low ET) at 254, but against Scott Kalitta in the first round, he lost another blower. The next stop on the NHRA trail was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals on April 21. Once again Ed qualified well with his 5.79/254.38 taking the #2 spot. Oswald got crossed up in the first round, against him and McCulloch's 5.82/255.68 advanced. In round two, a 5.87 beat John Collins and in the semifinals, Lombardo lost a rod just off the line, advancing Ed into the final. In the final he met Kenny Bernstein and despite running a good 5.81/247.25 he lost to Bernstein's better 5.69/252. At Baton Rouge for NHRA's fourth national event, the Cajun Nationals, Ed slipped to a 5.90/244.16 to qualify way back in the #10 spot. He lost to Bernstein in the first round. He qualified #9 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but lost to John Collins in the first round. The team got back into the groove in June, qualifying #3 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.77/253.52. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but a 5.88/233.57 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.79/251 in round two. At the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.75/254.66 qualified #5. He failed to reach the finals.

Notes: The car had that wild "shovel" nose on it, also ran it in '86. This car is the one Billy used 3 spark plugs per cylinder on until outlawed by NHRA. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway in January, Meyer had his supercharger explode on a 5.84/218.44 qualifier. The brand-new Mustang body was blown to pieces, and he received slight burns to his forehead. He was done for the day. Billy started the '85 NHRA season by qualifying #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with final attempt, 6.03/239.36. Billy lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. He destroyed another Mustang body at Atlanta on March 10. He was there for an eight-car show where he qualified #8 with a 6.42/223.88. In the first round, he beat a tire-smoking Pulde with a 5.82/240.00, but in the lights, the blower exploded and took the Mustang body with it. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Billy lasted until round two where Ed McCulloch's 5.91/254 beat his 5.97/243. A best of 5.93/229.00 failed to qualify at the Gatornationals, but he rebounded with a runner-up finish at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. In the semifinal, he stopped Kenny Bernstein's 5.95/243 with a 5.88/250. In the final, he faced Pulde, and they both ran 5.80 (Billy at Top Speed of the meet, 261.62), but Dale got the win. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he qualified #8 with a 5.93/208.04. A 5.99/250.00 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/224. In round two, he got out of shape and shut off in a loss to John Lombardo's 5.91/246 in the "Blue Max.” Meyer lost early at the next NHRA race as well, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3 with a 5.84/247.38, but in the first round, he crossed the centerline while racing Ron Correnti. Things weren't much better at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Billy made another final round appearance at the NHRA Springnationals in June. He qualified #6 with a 5.83/236.22 and beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.89/231.60. A second-round 5.81/242.06 beat a tire-smoking John Force and in the semifinals, a 5.82/241.54 beat John Collins' 5.94/244. In the final, Bernstein's 5.81/251 beat Meyer tire-smoking run. Only 15 cars showed up for the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but Billy still ran hard in qualifying running a 5.704/256.70 for the #2 spot. He smoked the tires hard in the first round, with a 6.05/254.09, but still beat Head, who blew an engine. He lost to eventual winner Rick Johnson driving the "Hawaiian" in round two. He was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he lasted until the semifinals. After that, he made the trip to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.80, but he lost to Tim Grose in the opening round. It was then off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Meyer's 5.96 at only 205.94 qualified #7. He beat Cal Jackson in the first round, with a 6.59/153.73 before losing to John Force's 5.95/243 with a 5.99/222.77 in the next round. He then went to Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Billy qualified #4 and ran 5.806/250.00 and 5.889/245.23 to reach the semifinals where he lost to Pulde.

Notes: The strip was so bad at Tucson on January 23 that Force qualified last in the eight-car field for the AHRA Winternationals with an 8.58. He lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the first round. At Pomona, Times were a little more normal for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.08/243.90 to qualify #5. In the first round, he improved to a 6.01/238.09 to beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." He round two, his 6.68/196.07 lost to Tom Anderson's 6.11/242. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.03/243.24. But in the opening round against Tim Grose, the car went into heavy tire shake, and John shut it down to an 8.39/104. At the NHRA Gatornationals, John ran an excellent 5.88/240.64 to qualify #3. He beat Al Segrini in the first round with a 6.18/227.27. But in round two, he fouled away a 5.95 against Mike Dunn. Not only had he fouled, but to add insult to injury, he didn't realize it, made a hard run, and blew the motor in the lights. The car went into a fireball that was quickly put out, and he was OK. Early in April, he was at OCIR for its 64-car show. All cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race, he smoked the tires and lost to Henry Harrison. In the second race, he did it again against Billy Meyer and shut down to 10.86. Needless to say, he did not run quick enough to reach the final. OCIR did it again the following week (April 9). The race was run in the same format. In the first race, John's 6.20/225.56 beat an engine-blowing Don Prudhomme. He set Low ET and Top Speed in his second race with a 5.91/248.61 that defeated Gary Densham. He lined up against Meyer in the final, and, unfortunately, he lost to Meyer's 6.06. NHRA held its Southern Nationals in Atlanta on April 17, and it was a hard field to break into as it was only an eight-car field. The drivers who failed to qualify included Ken Bernstein, Beadle, Meyer, Gary Burgin, Dale Pulde, and Mike Dunn. John made the show, running 5.94/241.93 for the #4 spot. In the first round, his 6.12/230.17 lost to Ken Veney's 6.03/233. John set Low ET and Top Speed of the Fuel Wars event at Fremont in April at 5.94/241 in the final but was considered the runner-up as Mike Miller won all three of his races. The other cars were the Pisano car and Dale Pulde. Winner of the OCIR Son of 64 Funny Car 4/83 with a 5.91. He was at Tulsa in early May for the AHRA Springnationals. A 6.88 qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Jim White in the first round. Shortly after, he was in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show; he was the first alternate at 6.10/237.46. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.08/239.36 qualified #12. An opening round 6.01/246.52 beat Bernstein's 6.25/237, but John could not stop and crashed the car into the catch net. The team repaired the car for round two but smoked the tires and shut it off to 10.37/69.82 in a loss to Mark Oswald's 6.18/241 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified in the field's top half (#4) with a 6.23/215.32, but he improved to 6.07/240.01 in the opening round over White. But again, he fell to that dreaded tire smoke in the semifinal, where he lost to Tom McEwen. Early in July, he traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. His 6.06/233.16 qualified #7 for the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.08/240 lost to Mark Oswald's controversial 5.62/240.At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, his 5.94/243.90 qualified #4.He ran 6.01/243.24 in the first round to beat Dunn's 6.11/229 in the "Hawaiian." A great light combined with a 6.03/241 in the second round defeated Veney's quicker 5.96/245.Prudhomme encountered tire shake against him in the semifinal and shut off while Force advanced with a 6.01/247. His string of 6.0s continued into the finals, but the 6.00/245.23 he ran finished runner-up to Oswald's 5.92/251.At the end of the month (July 30), he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 6.22/232.55. He and Beadle had a really close first-round race that saw John's 6.22/238.09 beat the "Blue Max's" 6.22/239. In the semifinal, he fell off to 6.40/193.13, losing to Anderson's 6.16/220. John won a summer match race event at OCIR with a 5.89 in the final. He also ran 5.78 at 249.30 at the OCIR World Finals, ending as runner-up to John Lombardo. He became the 8th and final entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car with a 250.69 pass at NHRA Indianapolis on September 3, 1983. Good stuff on the NHRA tour with competitive runs all over and best times of 5.782 at the OCIR Finals and the 250.69 at Indy. | Video link from AHRA Tucson 1983.
