Notes: The Akins and Hardcastle Stinger II, driven by Gary Southern, was a Chrysler-powered, direct drive, tube-framed Kellison Astra kit car. Neither fish nor fowl, it ran in the funny car classes, the sports car classes, and the fuel altered classes. This car was one of the reasons that NHRA when they instituted the Funny Car classes, specified "Production Bodies only." Hardcastle held the CC/FD record. |

Notes: Arnie started driving John's Cuda in competition on June 13 at Lions for its All-American series race. Arnie qualified #1 with a 7.39 but came up against the always tough Gene Conway in the first round. Sure enough, Conway set Low ET at 7.26/202.70 while beating Behling's close 7.30/203.61 (Top Speed). Arnie got back into the show for the semifinals when Steve Bovan broke. He made good use of his second chance by running a 7.60/196.07 to beat Bob Smith's 7.95/163 in "Bad Bascomb's Ghost." That put him in the final, where once again, he faced Conway's Corvette. Arnie must have been a little nervous as he fouled away a 7.79/193.54, giving Gene the victory. At the OCIR March of Dimes race on June 20, he set Low ET at 7.25/199.50 in his first-round victory over Conway's 7.74/195. In the semifinal, a 7.67/199.55 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.72/194. But against Mike Snively in the final, he got a little anxious and fouled, running a 7.41/202.70. Snively ran a 7.26/203.61 for the win. On July 3 for the Nitro Championships at OCIR, he again set Low ET at 7.25, but this time, it came in the final while beating Ray Alley for the win. He ran an easy 7.64/190.67 in the first round, when Jack Chrisman's Mustang broke. A 7.46/180.36 beat Dave Beebe's 7.48/195 in round two, and in the semifinal, he set Top Speed with a 7.43/200.44 pass over Snively's 7.67/194. His final round numbers were 7.25/200.00 over Alley's 7.95/191. He went out and did it again the next day at Irwindale's Fourth of July race. He beat a troubled John Lombardo with a 7.81/190.26 in the first round. In the semifinal, he was to have met Ray Alley, but Alley broke, so Arnie soloed with a 7.59/186.32. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 7.53/191.88, beating Conway's off pace 8.36/111. On July 11, he ran at the AHRA All-American meet at Lions. Again he came away with Low ET and Top Speed when he won his first-round race over Vic Morse with a 7.31/198.67. He beat Ray Alley in the semifinal with a rear-end breaking 8.02/133.13 but could not fix the car in time for the final, so Alley returned to run with the break rule in effect. He qualified #1 on August 1 at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships and beat Barry Kelly's Corvair in the first round, with a 7.38 (Low ET) at 186.32, but in round two, he won the race when Frank Rupert crossed the centerline, but Behling's car caught fire and was unable to return for the semifinals. He was ok. On August 15, they were back at it at the OCIR Anniversary Race. Once again, Arnie had Low ET and Top Speed at 7.14/210.78 (track speed record). He beat John Lombardo's 7.57/192 in the first round, with a 7.19/208.81. But the car came up ailing in round two and could only muster a 7.99/171.42, losing to Ed Lenarth's 7.64/181. At Indy for the US Nationals, a 6.895/214.79 qualified #3, but he lost a blower belt on the line in the first round, and Ken Safford advanced. That was the only NHRA national event that the team ran together. On September 13, Behling was at Lions for an eight-car All-American race. He qualified #1 with a 7.39, and in the first round, his 7.30/203.61 (Top Speed) lost to Conway's 7.26/202. He got back into the show on the break rule and beat Bob Smith driving the "Bad Bascomb's Ghost" car in the semifinals with a 7.60/196.07. In the final, he reran Conway, and once again, the results were the same. Gene got the victory while Arnie's 7.79/193.54 finished runner-up. By the end of September, Rich Siroonian was back behind the wheel. |

Notes: Followed Joe Amato into the 260 mph zone by minutes. He also ran a nice 5.80/255.68 at IHRA Cincinnati. | Bernstein ran well in '84, becoming the first Funny Car driver to run 260. He benefited from wind tunnel testing the previous December. He ended up finishing third in the NHRA year-long points chase and if it were not for Sherm Gunn, he may have finished higher. Gunn beat Bernstein in the first round, three times on the NHRA tour. Still, with the addition of an on-board computer to aid crew chief Dale Armstrong, Kenny was always a threat to win. He started the season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway in January. A final round 5.98/248.61 beat Tom McEwen's 6.07/236. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 5.83 (Low ET) at 252.80. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.90/251.91 lost to John Force's 5.89/247. He made history at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals in March. He qualified #2 with a 5.78/256.41. In the first round, he beat Tom Anderson with a 5.84/256.41. Round two saw his 5.79/257.87 advance when Mark Oswald broke, and in the semifinals, a 5.79/256.41 beat a tire-smoking Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." In the final, he ran his historic 5.80/260.11 to win over John Collins' 5.92/245. This was the last 260 mph run he would make this season as well as his only NHRA win of '84. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, a 5.88/254.23 qualified #2, and he lasted until round two, where McEwen's 5.87/245 put the Tempo's 6.04/245 on the trailer. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Kenny qualified #1 with a 5.78/255.68. He made it into the final where he ran 5.80/254.23 for the runner-up spot to Billy Meyer's 5.73/252. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships and ran well, but failed to make the finals. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified fourth in the field and lost in the second round when he smoked to tires and lost to Meyer. He lost in the first round, at the IHRA Springnationals where he qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field with a 5.83/250. Once again, he smoked the tires, this time losing to Sherm Gunn in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.84/252.10, but in the first round, smoked the tires and lost to Gunn. At the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, a 5.96/252.80 qualified #12, but once again, he lost early. Things went better the following week (July 8) at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he won by beating Don Prudhomme in the final. He qualified #6 with a 5.78/249. In the opening round, his 5.99/205 beat Scott Kalitta and a second-round 5.77/251 beat a tire-smoking Tim Grose. He got a bit of a holeshot in the semifinals that saw his 5.81/255.68 beat Jim Head's slightly quicker 5.80/257. A final round 5.81/257.87 beat the "Snake's" 5.89/236. At Englishtown on July 15 for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.79, but broke a reverser after his burnout in the semifinals. This gave eventual winner Beadle a single into the final. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he again made it as far as the semis before losing. On August 5, Kenny won his second IHRA event, the Summernationals at Edgewater Park near Cincinnati. He beat Oswald in the final with a 5.80/255.68 to Mark's 5.84/251. Mark got one back at the next race, the NHRA Northstar Nationals at Brainerd, where he stopped Bernstein in the semifinals. At Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, Kenny qualified #2 with a 5.73/249.89, but he failed to reach the finals. The Budweiser King team had made enough points in qualifying at NHRA national events to be able to run in the Big Bud Shootout at Indianapolis. It was an eight-car affair and in the first round, Kenny's 5.95/247.93 beat Dale Pulde's 5.97/246. In the semifinals, his 5.91/252.10 lost to McEwen's 5.84/254. For the running of the NHRA US Nationals, Kenny qualified for the field with a 5.78/257.14 (#7). He beat a tire-smoking Gunn in the first round, with a 5.91 and in round two, a 5.84/249.30 beat Meyer who also smoked the tires. In the semifinals, a 5.74/250.69 advanced when Frank Hawley got out of shape in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and almost smacked the guardrail. In the final, he had problems and slowed to a 15.24/50.81 that lost to Head's 5.96/254. A week later, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals, where once again he ran well, but failed to reach the finals. Best NHRA ET was a 5.747 in round 3 at Indy. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. Former Billy Meyer 82 Pontiac Firebird. At Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals on August 26, Smart qualified #11 with a 6.01/229.99. He failed to reach the finals, but it was still a good outing for the newcomer to the Funny Car ranks. Jody made his NHRA Funny Car debut at Indy for the US Nationals. He did pretty well, qualifying #6 with a 5.78/256.41. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to eventual winner Jim Head. A week later he was at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals where he qualified #2, but lost early. |

Notes: Blown fuel, as seen here. Tube AWB chassis. Landy, who spent some time behind the wheel of Shirley Shahan's "Drag On Lady" Plymouth in 1966, started 1966 in his 1965 Dodge, sold it and built this Dart. Started with normal wheelbase, then AWB'd it. Late in 1966, he aded this blower. Sold car in 1967 to Gene Kidder, who crashed the car in 1968. (January 1970 Hot Rod) |

Notes: Pulde started his '81 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with a 6.19/220.04. His 6.25/231.95 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.11/241 in Johnny Loper's Arrow in the opening round. He did much better on March 8 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Pulde qualified #1 with a 6.241/216.34, and in the first round, he beat a tire-smoking John Force with a 6.28/223.88. The Challenger had both front wheels off the track for most of the run in the second round, but his 6.68/217 still came out on top over Dennis Geisler's troubled 10.18. In the semifinal, he advanced with a 6.27 when Bob Pickett was shut off on the line with an oil leak. He took the victory in the final over Dale Armstrong with a 6.26/229. He had another good showing the following week (March 15) at the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.04/233.16 qualified the "War Eagle" in the #8 spot. In the first round, he beat John Collins' wheelstanding Datsun with a 6.10. He ran an engine saving 13.94 in the second round when Armstrong was unable to run. In the semifinal, a 6.33/223.32 beat Shumake's 6.75/174. All looked well for another victory, but Gordie Bonin stopped him with a 6.18/241 in the final. Dale ran 6.21/223.3 in a runner-up effort. On March 22, he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.18/236. Pulde made it into the semifinal before losing to Kenny Bernstein. Things did not go well in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals held near the end of April. Dale's 6.21 failed to qualify for the eight-car field that had a 6.16 "bump." Dale won the NHRA Eastern Regional on May 3 at Raceway Park. He beat Tim Grose in the final with a 6.02 (Low ET). In June, at the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.25/216.34 qualified #15, and he lost to Roy Harris in the first round. He qualified #15 again at the next NHRA show he attended, the Summernationals at Englishtown. This time, he got the spot with a 6.20/231.95. He got around a tire-smoking Gary Burgin in the first round with a 6.14/234.37. But in the second round, he shut down to a 10.16 loss to Don Prudhomme. Pulde was at the IHRA Summernationals at Bristol in July. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show, but he met up with low qualifier Billy Meyer in the first round, smoked the tires, and lost. Dale ran a 5.97 in qualifying for the NHRA US Nationals, and it only placed him #5 in the tough field. He lasted until the second round, where he ran a 6.15 that lost to Raymond Beadle's 5.92 in the "Blue Max." It was back to Bristol on September 13 for the IHRA US Open. Dale qualified #3 in the eight-car show, and the first-round beat Al Segrini with a 6.11/235.60 to the "Super Brut's" 6.29/219. In the semifinal, he smoked the tires to a 12.73 and lost to Paul Smith driving the "Entertainer." Fremont hosted the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 4, and Pulde set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.943/227.84. An off-pace first-round 6.34/229.00 lost to Burgin's 6.09/229. He closed out the NHRA season by qualifying #4 with a 6.01/234.98 at OCIR on October 18 for the World Finals. Dale lasted until the semifinals before smoking the tires to a 6.92/154.10 loss to Jim Dunn's 6.06/238. At the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, Dale ran well, but to reach the final, you had to have one of the two lowest ETs after three rounds of racing. He didn't get into the final, but he turned in some good times. A 6.16/226.70 beat Gary Densham and in his third race, a 6.10/237.46 beat Tim Grose. All in all, it was a good season for the "War Eagle" team. Dale's best NHRA times were the 5.943 at Fremont and 241.93 at Indy. Where was the 245 run? |

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1989. Jim replaced Johnny West as the driver of Roland Leong's "Hawaiian" entry for '89. The team started the season by qualifying #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.43/258.24. Jim cut a good light in his first-round race against Mike Dunn and his 5.46/258.10 beat Mike's better 5.42/269. In round two he beat Art Hendey with a 5.55/216.50, but as can be seen by his speed, he hurt some parts and was unable to make his semifinal race against Bruce Larson. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, the team qualified #13 and lost to Larson in the first round. White qualified #8 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but once again he was on the trailer after the first-round. Things went even worse at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where the team failed to qualify. The "Hawaiian" was at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. Jim qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.54/251.32, but he smoked the tires to a 6.33/181.96 in the first round, that lost to Tony McCallum's 5.76/247. The team continued to have trouble qualifying for NHRA fields. At the Springnationals, White was first alternate with a best of 5.58/260.11. He managed to get into the show when #15 qualifier McCallum had a blower explode and destroy his T-Bird. Jim beat John Force in the first round. In round two, Kenny Bernstein smoked the tires against him and Jim's 5.70/253 advanced. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hoover. The NHRA tour then shifted to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.64/237.52 qualified #11. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.63/78.78 that lost to Larson's 5.49/265. After that, it was back to the US at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The "Hawaiian" qualified #2. A 5.63/248.75 advanced past R.C. Sherman in the first round, but the Daytona broke on the line in the semifinals against Doc Halladay. The following week (July 9), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where they again failed to qualify. White qualified well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 5.68/255.53 for the #6 spot. He beat Gary Densham in the first round, before losing to Larson's 5.65 with a 5.78. It seemed as though the team found something as at Sonoma they qualified #5 with a 5.40/268.41. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round, with a 5.67/258.74. Jim then had problems and shut off to a 10.69 that lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.38/268. The good runs continued when at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. Jim qualified #3 with a great 5.33/266.98. A 5.48/253.16 beat a tire-smoking McCallum in the first round, and in round two, his 5.50/258.77 beat Jim Murphy. He was in the semifinals at an NHRA national event for the third time this season, but once again the gremlins stepped in and he broke against Larson. On August 13, he was at Martin, Michigan, for its Wolverine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and all cars ran two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Jim ran a 6.03/246.21 in his first race over Ronny Young, but in his second race, he smoked the tires and shut off. His ETs were not good enough to advance to the final. His next stop was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.45/267.69, but he slipped to an off pace 7.51/111.85 in the first round, that lost to R.C. Sherman's 5.68/256. |

Notes: The Grand Am was getting a repaint by Bill Carter before the start of the season. While the team did not race at the AHRA Winternationals, Pulde qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.35/222.77. He beat Mike Mitchell in the first round, with a 6.44/217.39, but in round two, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.79/79.29 in a loss to Dale Emery's 6.46/223 in the "Jeg's" Camaro. Early in March, he was at Amarillo for a best of three match against Gene Snow. The Pontiac won all three races with times of 6.80,6.71 and 6.76. Snow was not far off as his best was 6.72. Pulde's best speed was 203. The team also did not race at the NHRA Gatornationals. On March 23, the M/T car was at Irwindale's Fox Hunt race. It was an eight-car field, and Pulde's 6.66 qualified #6. He the Leroy Goldstein, who was driving the "Mr. Ed" Satellite, had a really close first-round battle that saw Dale's 6.93/215.82 defeat Leroy's similar,6.93/210. He slowed to 7.08/191.89 in a loss to eventual winner Bob Pickett's 6.69/217 in the "Lil Demon" in the semifinal. He won the Seattle Opener in April, stopping Twig Zeigler's 6.48/219 in the final with a 6.49/220. In June, Pulde was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #11 and an off-pace 7.42/157.61 in the opening round lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.61/192. The following week (June 14), he was at Byron's Manufacturer's Meet. It wasn't a good outing. His 6.85/191.08 fell to Tom McEwen's 6.86/201 in the first round, and in the second, the car caught fire in his race against Denny Savage. A valve cover gasket had failed, and oil got onto the headers causing the fire. Dale got it stopped ok, and there was little damage other than scorched paint. Not long after that, he was in Connecticut for an eight-car show. A 6.73/209.30 beat Fred Goeske's 6.90/210 in the opening round, but the car broke and could not run after that. They did not run at either the NHRA Summernationals or the Grandnationals, but they were at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Pulde ran 6.44/220.04 to qualify #7. Despite improving to 6.36/220.04 in round one, he lost to Pat Foster's 6.31/221 in John Lombardo's Vega. The next stop was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. Until this time, the car was not setting the world on fire as far as its performance went, but this race changed all that. Dale ran 6.38/224.43 to qualify #6. In the first round, he improved a bit, running 6.33 at just 201.79 to beat Pickett's 6.87/175. Everything changed in round two; his outstanding 6.16/233.76 (Low ET and Top Speed) dumped Don Prudhomme's 6.49/178. This changed everything for Shirl Greer, who had been fighting with Prudhomme for the points championships. Pulde's beating the "Snake" gave Greer the hard-fought title. In the semifinal, Dale banged out another stout number, a 6.17/233.76, but he was late off the line, and he finished second best to Dave Condit's 6.19/226 in the "Plueger and Gyger" Mustang. Condit would go on to win the race. A week later (October 20), Pulde went to Fremont for its National Open. It was an eight-car field. The M/T Pontiac was running well there as well as he set Low ET and Top Speed in the opening round with his 6.38/228.21 beating Prudhomme's 6.41. Beating the "Snake" two weeks in a row was pretty much unheard of. Pulde lasted to the final, where he was to face Roger Garten in the "Warhorse" Mustang. But Dale had a supercharger explosion on the line, and Garten won the rave with a 6.61. Irwindale held its Team Funny Car Championships the next week, and Pulde ran well. A 6.42/205 beat Snow in the opening round. He then lost to Tom Hoover in his second race. Garten fouled against him in his third race. Set new world record for funny cars at 1974 Supernationals / World Finals at Ontario: 6.16/233.76. - RT | Yellow, red, black versions. Also was painted in red this season (raced at Indy '74 in that livery). - CS | Ran 6.44 at Fremont, 6.35 at Pomona, 6.36 at Indy. |

Notes: Paul was the tenth alternate at NHRA Gainesville (times unavailable). At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.37 (speed unavailable) was the first alternate. Shortly after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but his 6.61 in the opening round lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.34. Paul was the 12th alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.37/233.76. That was his last NHRA national event of the season. The listed 6.08 at 237.46 is considerably faster than his other national event times this year. We need to validate. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1979. |

Notes: Hoover's first funny car. Woody Gilmore chassis, Fiberglass Trends Challenger body. Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970. | After running a SOHC Ford-powered Top Fuel dragster for the last couple of seasons, Tom switched to FC's for '70. It was definitely a learning experience. His first time out with the car came at Irwindale shortly before the NHRA Winternationals. The first time they lowered the body, he was claustrophobic; he "got over that weird feeling after a few runs." He failed to qualify the car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals but had transmission trouble in the first round and lost to Frank Federici in the "Shark." Tom had one of only two FCs that showed up at NHRA's third Division 5 race held at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD. Unfortunately, in their run for the money, his 8.13/187.50 lost to Art Ward's 8.05/175. He competed at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, where all cars were to run three rounds. He fouled (8.16) in his first race, but a 7.47 in his second race beat Marc Susman in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car. He also won his third race with a strong 7.28/206.42. He had a bad day in August at Minnesota Dragways. It was a four-car race, and he soloed in his first race with a 7.55/197.36 when John Collins, who was now driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" car lost fire. Hoover was to race Bryan Teal in the "Super Chief" in his second race, but while backing up from his burnout, Tom's brakes failed. He tried to stop the car by swerving it into the sand that ran alongside the track. Everyone got out of the way except for one boy who escaped with just some bruises. He repaired the brakes in time to make a final run against Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car. Safford lost a rod on their run, and Tom's 7.34/200.89 got the win. His next stop was at Bristol for the eighth AHRA Grand American race. An opening round 7.99/164.23 got past Bob Sullivan's ailing Camaro, and in round two, his 7.67/187.10 beat Dick Harrell's 7.94/184. In the semifinals, Don Prudhomme's 7.18/204 sent Hoover's 7.56/198.96 packing. Hoover ran a career-best since joining the Funny Car ranks of 7.048/209 in qualifying #7 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. A first-round 7.209/204.54 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.22/206 in the "Super Duster." A National Dragster article stated that he had run a best of 6.90 this season. Tom's known best IHRA ET was a 7.04 at Rockingham. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1988. | Bruce stepped up his act in '88 and it showed when he won his first NHRA National event this year. He made the switch from Chevy bodies cars to Oldsmobile. His season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.54. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ed McCulloch. In that race, Ed smoked the tires while Larson motored into the second round where his 5.58 lost to John Force's 5.42. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.69. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. He did not race in the IHRA events this year so the next big event he attended was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta where he lasted until the second round where Oswald's 5.55 stopped his 5.62 from advancing. Oswald got him again at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, only this time it was in the first round. Bruce qualified #12 there with a 5.72. Larson got his first NHRA win at the Cajun Nationals at the end of May. He beat Tom Hoover and a fouling Force with a 5.60/254 in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he beat McCulloch and in the final, it was Kenny Bernstein he beat for his first victory. After that, it wasn't long before he was in another NHRA final; in fact it came at the very next race, the Springnationals at Columbus. Bruce qualified #4 with a 5.51. He took out Chuck Etchells in the first round, and a 5.50/268 beat John Martin in round two. In the semifinals, Mike Dunn smoked the tires against him and Bruce's 5.54/254 run moved him into the final to face Force. It was not much of a race in the final; when Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.69/50.65 while John ran 5.52/262 for the victory. Bruce followed the NHRA tour up north to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.65/263.00 and lasted until the second round when eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.50 beat his 5.59. Then came another final round appearance at the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.49/261.55 qualified #5, and he beat Frank Kramberger in the first round. A second round 5.59/260 beat Force's 5.65/251, and in the semifinals, a 5.57/260 beat Bernstein's 5.62/255. In the final, he ran Prudhomme who had been running steady 5.4's. Bruce tried hard, running a 5.63/260, but it finished second best to the "Snake's" 5.41/257. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals where he qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 5.55/254.95. R.C. Sherman fouled against him in the first round, and Bruce advanced with a 5.68/251.29. In the semifinals, he soloed with a 5.76/254.23 when Tim Grose broke and was unable to run. He found himself in another final, and while it wasn't a national event, I'm sure he still felt good. In the final, he faced low qualifier Bernstein. Kenny got the win while Larson got another runner-up finish. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals in Aug, everyone was running 5.3's in qualifying, except, it seemed, Larson. He qualified #8 with a 5.45/267.30. In the first round, he showed he could run with the big dogs by beating Bryan Raines with a 5.35. In the second round, a 5.52 beat a tire smoking Oswald. He was surprised by a quick-leaving Brad Tuttle in the semifinals and his 5.59 couldn't catch Brad's 5.62. |

Notes: West started the 1988 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 5.82/247, setting up a first-round race with low qualifier John Force. He lost the race, running a 5.93/243.24 to Force's 5.40/268. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he again lost to Force in the first round. He qualified #13 with a 5.68/254.45. His 5.98/234.37 in the first round lost to Force's 5.49/267. Shortly after that, the team made a stop at Baylands Raceway for a four-car match run at the East/West Meet. West beat Mike Dunn's 5.67/253 in his first race with a 5.64/249.30. He ran another 5.64 at 245.90 in his second race but lost to Force's 5.61/252. The final was another race between him and Force. Once again, John got the win, running a track record 5.51 at 248 to beat the "Hawaiian's" 5.82/221.13. At the NHRA Gatornationals, West did much better in qualifying, turning a 5.45/268.57 (career-best) for the #5 spot. Unfortunately, he still couldn't get out of the first round, as this time, Jim Head's 7.29/138 beat his 9.67/87.83 in a troubled match. He qualified for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta with a 5.87/258.10 before losing in round one. The next stop for the team was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. West ran 5.70/257.36 to qualify #10. He slowed to 5.86/247.72 in the first round and lost to Jim Head's 5.68/253. The month of May ended with the team at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Only 13 cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, West ran 5.72/259.74 for the #10 spot. He continued to have problems getting past round one as this time, he fell to Kenny Bernstein. At Columbus, his 5.77/258.59 qualified #15 for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, he took a loss in the first round, this time to Ed McCulloch. He finally got around the first round at the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 14 cars showed for the race, and his 5.67/259.74 qualified #9. Typically, he would have run the low qualifier in a sixteen-car field, but because the field was two short, he ran the second qualifier McCulloch in round one and won. He then sent Jerry Caminito home in round two with a 5.70/251. His run ended in the semi-final, where a 5.68 was not enough to beat Don Prudhomme's 5.55. Johnny ran 5.35/270 at the Englishtown Funny Car Nationals. His best NHRA national event times were 5.427 at Maple Grove and 268.65 at the World Finals at Pomona. |

Notes: Frank's first event this year was Indy, where he was the seventh alternate at 6.57/227.84. At the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo, Texas, Frank ran well. He started that race by qualifying #2 for the West at 6.67 and then ran 7.10/142.63 in round one when Joe Jacono did not show. In round two, Al Bergler broke against him, and Frank claimed a 6.72/207.85 victory. He improved to 6.42/225.56 in the semis to beat Shirl Greer's 6.64. He became the 1973 NHRA World Champion by running a 6.39/224.43 to beat Bobby Rowe's 6.38/228.42 on a holeshot. Frank qualified #7 at the Ontario SUpernationals at 6.441/223.32. He beat Billy Meyer in round one at 6.48/219.51 when Meyer lost fire. In round two, his otherwise excellent 6.37/224.43 lost to Dale Emery's killer 6.28/229.59. Where did Frank run 6.29/228.42? Notes: Don had a terrible start for the '83 season at the OCIR Grand Premiere race. Eight cars competed, all running two rounds, and the two cars with the lowest ET's would meet in the final. In the "Snake's" first race, he blew his engine, and the car caught fire. Still, his 9.12 beat Gary Burgin, who shut down early. The team installed another "bullet" for his second race, and once again, it blew up and caught fire. He still won as opponent Tom McEwen had shut down. Don crossed the stripe at 7.34/125.69. Things went better at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where his 6.80 (Low ET) qualified #1. Traction there was terrible as his 6.80 in qualifying held for Low ET of the meet. He went on to win by beating Tom Hoover in the first round with a 7.32/229 (Top Speed), and in the semifinals, he beat Tom McEwen. That put him into the final against Gary Burgin. Gary had problems and shut off while Prudhomme took the win with a 7.00. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.097/227.84. A first-round 6.33/207.37 took out Mike Van Sant in the "Invader" Mustang, but in the second round, the "Snake" had to shut off against Frank Hawley due to severe tire shake. Don qualified #6 with a 5.92/233.16 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but an off-pace 6.19/209.78 lost to Tom Anderson's 6.04/239 in the first round. Early in April, he went back to OCIR for its first 64 car show. Once again, the race featured two rounds and the two Low ET cars meeting for the final. In the first race, his 6.13/222.77 defeated Burgin's 6.35/230. He raced McEwen in his second race, and the "Mongoose" smoked the tires while Prudhomme took the win with a 6.28/207.37. His best time of 6.13 was nowhere close to advancing into the final. The following week (April 9), OCIR did it again. They held another 64 car show run in the same format. It was not a good day for Don as in the first round, his motor-blowing 6.60/183 lost to John Force's 6.20/225. In his next race, the "Snake" shut off against Billy Meyer. He did not go to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. On May 2, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. A 6.29 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He stayed tough during eliminations, running 6.36/235.60 over John Collins's 6.63/198 and 6.26/236.84 over Jim White's 6.77/225, but McEwen ran better laps of 6.22 and 6.22 to reach the final. In the final, the "Mongoose's" 6.20/238 got the better of the "Snake's" 6.51/194. Near the end of the month, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car show, and his 5.97/243.24 qualified #3. A troubled 6.94/197.36 beat an even more troubled Ken Veney at 7.11/227 in the first round. The car smoked the tires in the semifinals, and Don shut down, losing to Mark Oswald's 6.02/249 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Shortly after that (June 5), he made an appearance at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He "only" qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but once eliminations started, the car came to life. An opening round 5.87/226.69 took out Meyer, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 5.81/246.57 that defeated Dale Pulde's 5.89/247. He faced Oswald in the final, and despite running a better 5.86/245, he lost to Mark's 6.00/236. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," led qualifying with a 5.88/238, but Prudhomme was right behind in the #2 spot with a 5.94/243.30. Unfortunately, Don lost to Rick Johnson driving the "Custom Body" car in the opening round. He continued to run well at the AHRA events. At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, Prudhomme set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.05/244.57. He stayed in the 6.0s by beating Ron Correnti in the opening round with a 6.09/238.10 and Mike Dunn in the semifinal with a 6.08/238.10. Once again, he faced McEwen in the final. This time it was no contest as Don's 6.13/243.91 won easily over McEwen's 6.68/155. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 5.916/252.80 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Anderson and Hawley to reach the final against Oswald. Mark was great on the lights, and in the final, it showed as his 6.34/245 nipped Don's 6.31/241.93 for the victory. The "Candies and Hughes" team continued to be a thorn in Prudhomme's side at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Mark's 5.90/251 got the pole with the "Snake's" 5.91/238.72 following. These two looked like they were headed for another final-round showdown. In round one, John Lombardo fell to Prudhomme's 5.96/233.16. The "Blue Max" ruptured an oil pan in the second round, so Don made a solo. The semifinal saw Oswald also make a solo as his competition broke. So, all Don had to do was beat Force. But fate stepped in as the car went into heavy tire shake, and Don shut down while Force legged it to a 6.01/247 for the win. Prudhomme bypassed the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver, choosing to go to Kansas City instead for the AHRA Summernationals. His 6.14/234.37 there qualified second behind Mike Dunn's 6.09/246 in the "Hawaiian." In round one, an easy 6.40/229 beat Johnny West, who lost a blower belt. He really picked it up in the semifinal, where his 6.05/218.97 won over West, who broke on the line. In another classic "Snake vs. Mongoose" final, Don's 6.07/239 got the victory over Tom's close 6.10/222. He always ran well at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships as he seemed to win it every other year. But this year, his 6.07/219.51 only qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field. He got an easy solo in round one when Bob Pickett broke, and in round two, Al Segrini was shut off on the line with an oil leak, so he advanced with a 6.10/233.76 solo. In the semifinal, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires, shutting off to 10.57 in a loss to eventual winner Hawley, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," who won with a 6.05/238. Don's best NHRA national event times were the 5.749 from the OCIR Finals and the 252.80 from Sanair. Don sold the car to Dennis Lockaby to Monty Todd. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1983. |

Notes: Tripp started the '83 season at Pomona. He qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 6.206/244.56. It was unlucky because by qualifying in that spot you had to run the #1 qualifier in the first round. Shumake ran low qualifier Tom Anderson, and sure enough, Tom's 5.960/242.58 put the Camaro's 6.158/245.90 on the trailer. Back on the match race trail, the team ran an ungodly 5.749 at the 64 Funny Cars event at Orange County in April. They also competed at the Fuel Wars event in Fremont, but failed to impress with three straight losses due to tire shake and other maladies. The team’s next NHRA event was the Springnationals at Columbus, where Tripp did not qualify at 6.267/222.22. The team also failed to qualify at the US Nationals where their 6.017/243.90 was the fifth alternate. The team recovered at the Golden Gate Nationals, where a stout 5.858/250.00 grabbed the fourth slot in the eight-car field. Tripp defeated Dale Pulde in round one, 5.901/249.30 to 6.038/240.64, but fell to Billy Meyer in round two, 5.843/229.59 to 6.240/208.81. The team finished their NHRA season by qualifying #11 at the World Finals with a 5.932/247.25. Emerging star John Force got them in the first round, however, 5.809/247.25 to 6.174/179.64. Notes: Won Winston Invitational in 1992. Made history in round one at Ennis, when Mark Oswald powered to the best Funny Car speed ever, 5.163/293.06, in beating Dale Pulde. Mark also went 5.161 at Seattle and 5.188/290.79 at Maple Grove. We think he drove the Petosa Bros. car exclusively starting in Gainesville (he definitely drove it there). The team qualified well at every event but suffered terrible consistency problems on race day, leaving them first or second-round losers for most of the year. We need to confirm that he did not run the In-N-Out Cutlass at any of the other late-season NHRA events. |

Notes: First paint of 73. Qualified in a field of Top Fuel cars at OCIR on 5/12/73 with a 6.72. Moved to Fresno in 74? Ran a 6.40 runner-up at Indy US Nationals on 9/73 Ran 6.37 at Portland. | After his tremendous '72 season, McCulloch hoped for more success for '73. It wasn't to be. The year was good for him, but it was hard to top such a winning season as he had the year before. Ed started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran well, but failed to reach the finals. At Pomona, he barely made the show, qualifying on the "bump" spot. The track was not good, and he beat Leroy Chadderton in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 7.25/204. But in the second round, his 7.82/136 lost to Jim Murphy's 7.35/176. He did not qualify well at the Bakersfield March Meet either (#10), but he advanced past round one when Bill Leavitt fouled against him. A 7.48 in round two beat Gerry Glenn in John Lombardo's car and in the semifinals, his 7.42 beat Mike Van Sant in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. He was the underdog in the final against Tom Hoover who had run 7.15 and 7.17 in the last two rounds and sure enough, Tom's 7.14/218 in the final gave Ed the runner-up spot with a 7.57/196. Times were more "normal" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran 6.46/219.51 to qualify #3, and he beat Kosty Ivanof in the first round. Gene Snow shut off against him in round two and McCulloch advanced with a 6.63, but he hurt his motor while winning. He ran out of time to repair for his semifinal race so Don Schumacher soloed into the final. Ed then won a sixteen-car show at Miami near the end of March. He qualified #2 with a 6.76 and in the final, he beat Al Marshall driving Dale Creasy's Mustang. Another win came in early April at Seattle's Northwest Open. He qualified #1, set both ends of the track record, and went on to beat Kenney Goodell in the final. On April 21, McCulloch was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. It was a 32 car field and Ed set Low ET in round two with a 6.56. In the third round, his 6.81/211 lost to Danny Ongais' 6.73/218 in the "Vel's Parnelli Jones" Cuda. Seattle held its first Funny Car event in April, and Ed set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.52/218, but in the final, he was a little slow off the line and his 6.56/218 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.58/217. As noted, at OCIR's Constructor's Championships, Ed was the only Funny Car to qualify in a field of dragsters. His 6.72 qualified #23 in the 32 car show. He lost to John Stewart in the first round. |

Notes: This was Bonin's best season since he started driving Funny Cars. It started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he debuted his new Firebird. He qualified #12 with a 6.37, and in the first round, picked up to 6.18/239.36 to beat Dale Emery's close 6.19/229. He then beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" before losing to Raymond Beadle's 6.41 in the "Blue Max" with a quicker, but later 6.40 in the semifinals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified with a 6.35. Bonin ran a best of 6.10 before losing to eventual winner Eddie Pauling's 6.03 in the semifinals. He dominated the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #1 with a 6.26/238.72 (Top Speed). He beat Dodger Glenn in the first round, and then set Low ET in round two with a 6.19/236 over Gary Burgin. In the semifinals, he dispatched Beadle with a 6.64/236. In the final, he raced veteran Roger Lindamood. Bonin took his first NHRA national event victory. Gordie then stopped off at OCIR for an eight-car show where he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.13/240.00 before beating Dale Pulde in the final with a 6.26/236.84. He then won the Portland Funny Car Opener. There he set Low ET and Top Speed with a track record 232.95. The next day he went to Seattle and won its Funny Car Opener. Once again, he had the top times at 6.37/230.00. Bonin beat Terry Capp in the final. On April 9, he was at Irwindale's 64 car race. While he failed to reach the finals, he did run a best of 6.34/235.60. He did reach the final at the NHRA Division Six race at Firebird Raceway. There, his 6.58/227.76 times were good for both Low ET and Top Speed, but in the final, he fouled against Rob Bruins, who was driving the "Green Elephant." Gordie won the NHRA Division 6 race at Mission Raceway. He was runner-up at the third Division 6 race in Seattle. He set Low ET at 6.22 before running 6.57/219.51 in the final only to lose to Mike Miller's 6.37/231. In June, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. Bonin qualified #9 at 6.25/233.76, and in the first round, low qualifier, Burgin, fouled away a 6.15/234 while Bonin advanced with a 6.27/226.70. A second-round 6.29/230.76 advanced over Tom McEwen's troubled 10.12. In the semifinals, he smoked the tire to a 7.09/133.18 in a losing effort to Don Prudhomme, who was long gone with a 6.17/235. He was runner-up to John Lombardo at the OCIR Nitro Championships before winning Woodburn's fourth NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.29/229.59 while beating Mike Miller in the final. He did not compete at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. On July 31, he was at Portland for a 32 car show, and while he failed to reach the final, he set Top Speed at 224.43. Up in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 7, Gordie qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.36/229.59. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Prudhomme. Don ran 6.21/234 to beat Bonin's 6.29/227. A week later (August 13), he was at Firebird Raceway for the Night Fire 500 race. All ten cars there made two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gordie didn't make the final, but he did win his two races. A 7.21/215.74 beat Beadle in his first race, while he shut off when Twig Zeigler fouled against him in his second race. The NHRA Division 6 final was held at Portland International on August 19, and Gordie set Low ET and Top Speed on a first-round single with a 6.20/236.22. He then beat Miller to reach the final only to have Beadle gate him off the line, and his 6.33/225.56 lost to Raymond's 6.34/227. Bonin was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 21. He qualified #1 with a 6.34/230.17, and in round one, his 6.30/230.76 solo advanced when Jim Liberman lost fire. Gordie had another solo in round two when Capp shut off, and Bonin advanced with a 6.38/219.50. He looked like he was on his way to another win as his times were the best in each of the first two rounds, but he failed to hear the call for his semifinal race against Beadle, and the "Blue Max" was able to make a solo run into the final. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.106/240. An off-pace 6.62/224.43 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.36/216 in the first round. Only fifteen cars showed up at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, so qualifying wasn't a problem. Still, Bonin ran 6.28/234.98 (Top Speed) to qualify #5 for the show. A 6.42/222.77 advanced over Bob Papirnick in the first round, but in round two, his 6.40/230.76 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.28/223. Irwindale held its last race ever on October 1, and Gordie was there. It was a sixteen-car field, and Bonin ran 6.69/223 in the first round, over Tom McEwen, and in round two, Prudhomme broke on the line, and Gordie advanced with an easy run. In the semifinals, he faced Lombardo and Bonin ended up having traction problems and shutting off while John ran 6.28/193 to advance. At Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals, Gordie ran 6.19/239.36 to qualify #5. Bob Pickett broke against him in the opening round of eliminations, and his 6.19/232 advanced. A strong 6.16/239 beat low qualifier Burgin's 6.25 in round two, and in the semifinals, a 6.22/232 beat Tommy Ivo's troubled 11.68. The final came down to Bonin vs. The "Snake." Prudhomme had run been running like a bracket racer, hitting 6.06 on all three runs in eliminations, not to mention his 6.05 in qualifying. So it looked like Bonin was done. But, both slowed to 6.3's in the final, and Bonin's 6.31/228.42 triggered the win light ahead of Don's 6.36/238. | Runner-up to Mike Miller at Seattle PDA. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Won Epping Funny Car Nats in late 73 at 6.51/201.79. Also ran 6.44 at NED Epping. Prock qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.599/222.22. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.889/170.77 fell to Leroy Goldstein's 6.58/222 in the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda. He won over an eight-car field at Atco in April for an NHRA Funny Car Pro circuit race. Times were way off at this race. In round one, his 7.75/202.24 beat a tire-smoking David Ray at 10.40. In the semifinal, he won a coasting contest with Al Hanna when both cars broke. Tom's 8.78/150.50 beat the "Eastern Raider's" 14.33. He faced Roy Harris in the final, and both cars made troubled runs, but Prock got the victory with an 8.43/205.01 over Harris' 12.56/70 in the "Frantic Ford." Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for another eight-car show. He didn't stay long as his 7.08/181.08 in the opening round fell to Al Segrini's 6.68/219. He competed at the Atco Funny Car Factory Showdown race at the end of the month (April 29). His 7.36/154.90 advanced when Richard Tharp had a rear-end break in the "Blue Max" in the first round. But the car lost fire in the semifinal against eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. On May 6, he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. A 6.96/204.42 defeated Hanna's 7.70 in round one, but in the semifinal, Dale Emery's 6.48/222 beat his 6.85/198.67. In June, Prock was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the Canadian All-Pro Championships. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Pete Hill. He then won the third NHRA Division One race held at Maple Grove on June 24. He got a solo in round one, when Lew Arrington broke. Tom advanced with a 6.69/203.16. He got another solo in the semifinal when Arnie Swensen's Mustang broke. This time Prock "cooled it" with a 9.41/83.17. He faced Joe Jacono in the final, and Prock's 6.89/216.86 scored the win over Jacono's 7.05/209 runner-up effort. His next stop was at Connecticut for its Summer Funny Car Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, he beat the "Shark" with a 6.68/219.51. Tom continued to look strong in round two, where his 6.60/221.67 took out Fred Goeske's ailing Vega. An even better 6.55/221.67 defeated Hill in the semifinal. But in the final, he faced Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse" Mustang. Larry kept strides with him in eliminations and even ran a quicker 6.54 in his semifinal win. The two had a great final round race that saw Fullerton get out on Prock and lead all the way with his 6.51/221 beating Prock's 6.45/223.88. Larry's car exploded into flames just past the finish line to make the race even more exciting. Prock's times were good enough to reset both ends of the track record. On July 4, he was at Englishtown for its Funny Car Spectacular. He lost to eventual winner Arrington in the opening round. But he returned for a consolation race against Fullerton, which he won with a 6.56/222.22 as Larry shut off early. Not long after (July 15), he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A great 6.441/226.13 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.40/230. But he smoked the tires hard in the first round, and his 7.10/207.85 lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.57/210. Prock got another win shortly after that at Lebanon Valley's Northeast Funny Car Nationals. His "Custom Body" Dodge was flying there as no one was anywhere close to his times. In round one, his 6.39/225 beat Liberman's 6.65/219. The closest anyone else came to his time in winning the first-round was 6.76! Prock just got quicker in the semifinal, running 6.37/226.40 over Hill's 6.78/204. In the final, Prock ran a track record 6.35 at 227.60 (Top Speed) to beat Tim Kushi's 6.86/209. He then won the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, where his final round 6.74/218 beat Arrington's 6.91/210. Earlier, Prock had set Top Speed at 221.13. Things didn't go so well for him at the Atco World Funny Car Championships. He shut down on the line with problems in the opening round. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.812, but he didn't run in eliminations as alternate Stan Bowman took his place in the field. Another win came his way at the NHRA Division One race at Pittsburgh International. He set Low ET in the final with a 6.55/204.08 to beat David Ray in Mike Burkhart's Vega. Earlier in the race, he also ran 215.82 for Top Speed. He also won the New England Grand American Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and he ran 6.48/211 in qualifying. Wayne Oxner fell to his 6.62/218 in the opening round, and in round two, Tom ran 6.49/226 to beat Ken Poffenberger. Arrington fried his tires against him in the semifinal, and he advanced with a 6.54/225. But Prock saved his best for the final, where he reset both ends of the track record with a 6.37/226.70 in stopping Liberman's 6.47/220. Prock had problems at Cecil County for the Maryland State Funny Car Championships. The car was acting up, and he was unable to run it in eliminations. After missing the show, he got the car sorted out and made a pass. His 6.63/220.04 was good enough for Low ET and Top Speed honors. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, Prock's 6.452/228.42 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round encounter with low qualifier Prudhomme. In their race, Tom ran career-best numbers of 6.301/229.00. Unfortunately, even that wasn't good enough to beat the "Snake's" 6.27/226. At the Amarillo World Finals, Tom qualified #2 for the Eastern Team and #5 overall with a 6.79. He beat Leroy Goldstein in round one, 6.64/218.96 to 6.69/191. In round two, Don Cain got to him with a holeshot, 6.66/207 to Tom's 6.60/221.67. The team did not run at the Ontario Supernationals. |

Notes: Beadle started his season at Fremont for the New Year's Day Funny Car race. Things didn't go so well as in his first race; his 7.44 lost to Ed McCulloch's 7.21 in a tire-smoking battle. He was still having trouble getting hooked up in his second race, and his 7.26 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.41. At the Irwindale Grand Premiere race on January 5, he qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. His easy 6.73/205.94 advanced when Dale Pulde broke on the line in the first round. In round two, he blew an engine but advanced when opponent Neil Leffler was shut off on the line with an oil leak. The "Blue Max" crew installed another engine for the semifinal match against Jim Dunn, but Beadle smoked the tires and lost to Jim's 6.46. Surprisingly, Raymond failed to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Still, three cars could not answer the first-round call, so Beadle got into the show as an alternate. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost to Dunn again. The team failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Everything fell into place at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Raymond qualified #1 with a 6.39 and made his way to the final against Kosty Ivanof. There he ran the breed's best numbers, a 6.36/219.51, to take the crown over Kosty's 6.63/202. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.47/215.86 qualified #6. An opening round 6.73/211.76 beat Bill Leavitt who smoked the tires, and a second-round 6.59/218.97 beat Billy Meyer, who was driving for Gene Snow. Beadle's 6.78 lost to Tom Prock's 6.68 in the "Custom Body" car in the semifinals. He was in the final of the next IHRA event as well, the World Nationals at Amarillo. Beadle qualified #2 behind Pulde driving the "Eastern Raider." These two would work their way into the final, where Pulde stopped Beadle for the victory. Another runner-up finish came at the AHRA Southwest Grand American at Tulsa. Beadle got out of shape in the final, and his shut off 8.85/113.35 lost to Dale Emery's 6.63/218 in Gene Snow's Vega. Ironically, in a couple of years, Emery was working with the "Blue Max" team. In May, Beadle's next victory came at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Beadle qualified #1 and beat Dennis Lockaby with a 7.45. In the second round, his 6.82/205.01 beat Denny Savage's 6.87/220, and a semifinal 6.72 beat Pulde. This got him into the final against Shirl Greer, and while Greer was having problems, Beadle set Low ET with a winning 6.58 at 214.28. At the AHRA Springnationals held at St. Louis, Raymond qualified #1 at 6.41/222. He set Low ET with a 6.33/212 to beat Emery in the first round, but lost to eventual winner Dick Custy in the semifinals. A week later (June 8), the team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.51/213.77 qualified the "Max" #8 in the field. Beadle beat a tire-smoking Pee Wee Wallace in the first round, with a 6.49/210.28. In round two, his 6.44/225.00 took out Emery's stout 6.46/217. He kept the pressure up in the semifinals, turning a 6.44 to beat McCulloch's 6.51. His final round foe was Prudhomme. Don had set Low ET in qualifying with a 6.29, but he was getting slower during eliminations while Beadle had been getting quicker. The "Snake" had run 6.31, 6.40, and a tire-smoking 6.84 to reach the final. The "Blue Max" was loaded for bear (Snake?) for the final, and it was expected to be a good race. It was for the photographers, at least. Just after leaving the line, Beadle started going into a wheelstand. As the front end lifted, the body released from the chassis and went end over end onto the track. The chassis came down hard, but Raymond got it stopped, and he was OK. We needless to say, the "Snake" drove to his third straight NHRA victory. Beadle got a measure of revenge at Cincinnati, Ohio, for the third NHRA Division 3 race. These two would meet again in the final there. Beadle showed that he had some upstairs horsepower by taking Top Speed at 229.08, and in the final, his 6.43/219.51 beat Prudhomme's troubled 7.19/147. It was then off to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Beadle qualified #1 with a 6.42/214 and looked like a sure bet to win after running 6.43 over Kenny Safford and 6.53 over Pulde. But in the semifinals, he burned the tires off it, and his 6.66 lost to eventual winner Snow's 6.36 (Low ET). Gene was returning to the driver's seat after his back operation. The "Max's" next win came at the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove. A final round 6.47/174.08 got the victory over Pat Foster in the "Chicago Patrol." They did not have a good outing at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Beadle only qualified #12 with a 6.55/215.31, and in the first round, he had a tire-smoking dual with Jim Liberman that saw them both run 7.02 (Beadle at 209.79), but "Jungle" got the win and would go on to win the race. Near the end of July, the "Blue Max" started its Northwest swing. The team was at Portland for the big 32 car Coca-Cola Championships. This was a race that had all cars run three rounds of racing. Beadle won his first race with a 6.50/214 over Jeff Courtie, and in his second race, he faced Jerry Ruth. Almost as soon as the "Max" started the northern tour, these two developed a rivalry. In this race, Ruth took the win with a 6.38 over Beadle's 6.52. The third race was worth the price of admission as he took on Liberman, and it was a great race as Raymond set Low ET with a 6.28 over "Jungle Jim's" strong 6.42. The next stop was at Edmonton, Alberta, for the Funny Car Spectacular on July 30. It was another three-round affair. Beadle beat Russell Long in the "Sundance" with a 6.56/200 in his first race, and he soloed with a 6.42/202 in his second race when Norm Wilcox failed to get the "Hawaiian" fired. The last race saw the tensions rise as Beadle got out of shape and crossed the centerline, sideswiping Gene Snow. Luckily, the damage was light to both cars. Then came the Seafair Championships at Seattle. It was another three-round, 32-car show with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Things didn't start so well when the Mustang II broke a rear end in the first race against Courtie. But after that, the "Max" was back. A 6.25/227.27 in his second race beat Ruth's 6.49/215. A third-round race wasn't held due to the track's 11:00 pm curfew, but Beadle's 6.25 held up as one of the two Low ET cars to race in the final. The other finalist was Liberman, who ran a 6.28. "Jungle" attempted a fire burnout just before staging in the final, but the car bogged out from lack of oxygen and almost stalled out in the fire. Due to this, he never got his tires properly warmed up, and he smoked to an 8.74 runner-up finish. He would have been hard-pressed anyway to catch Beadle, who set both ends of the track record with a winning 6.22/230.76. The "Blue Max" team did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were at Firebird Raceway for the fourth annual Night Fire 500 race. Unfortunately, Beadle failed to make it into the final. Another win for the team came at the IHRA Nationals held at Dragway 42 in mid-August. A 6.67/207.35 qualified #3, and Beadle improved to 6.44/208.33 in the opening round to beat Rodger Hamrick. The ET's continued to drop in round two, where his 6.41/220.04 advanced when Tom Hoover broke just off the line. In the semifinals, a 6.49/182.55 took care of Donnie Plunkett. He faced Denny Savage behind the wheel of the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the final. Savage had run 6.42 in his semifinal win. But Savage took a chance on the line in the final and fouled while Raymond ran Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.25 (track record) at 227.84. Then came the team's big victory at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. This was Beadle's first NHRA National event win. He qualified #1 with a 6.144/223.32. In round one, a 6.23/220.04 beat Gary Burgin's 6.43/218. In round two, Gene Snow fouled against him, so Beadle advanced with a 6.31 at just 188.28. John Lombardo smoked the tires against him in the semifinal, and Beadle won with a 6.21/218.44. He had the edge over Prudhomme going into the final as the "Snake" had run 6.45 in his semifinal win. Everything went his way in the final, a 6.16 backed up the 6.14 for a new NHRA record, and his speed on the pass was 226.70. Don's 6.26/224 gave him the runner-up spot. The following week, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. An off-pace 7.31 qualified #12, but Beadle set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.55/220.58 that beat Paul Smith. Things didn't go well in round two, where an engine let go on the line giving his opponent, Charles Lee, a solo into the semifinal. Did Raymond run 6.07 somewhere this year? We listed that formerly. It did not occur at an NHRA national event. Best NHRA national event speed was 226.70, run in the semis at the Gators (loss), and finals at Indy (win). Won IHRA Union Grove 75 with a Low ET 6.34. Won the 1975 IHRA championship by a wide margin with four national event wins. |
