Notes: The Pisano team did not hit the NHRA trail until Indy in 1981. They put the new Omni on the bump at 6.090/231.95, but lost round one to Jim Dunn, 6.166/228.42 to their shutting off 13.855/38.84. The team found their mojo at the Golden Gate Nationals, however, qualifying number two at 5.946/239.99, and winning round one over Billy Meyer, 6.020/234.98 to 6.310/187.50. A 6.530/161.57 beat a broken Jim Dunn in round two, but the team fell to eventual winner Mike Dunn in the semis, 6.130/237.46 to 7.250/127.29. The team claimed the bump spot at the Orange County World Finals at 6.202/226.13. They then upset Craig Epperly in round one, 6.696/214.70 to 12.337/57.87, before falling to eventual runner-up Dale Pulde in round two, 6.085/233.16 to 6.335/233.16. Formerly listed 243.24. We need to validate that the team went that fast in 1981.

Notes: Mike and Joe had a good season in '89. It started at the Winternationals, where Mike qualified #2 with a 5.34/279.85 (Top Speed). He had a bit of a snooze in the first round, and his 5.42/269.13 lost to Jim White's 5.46/258. They went on to the Supernationals, where they lost in the first round once again. At the Gatornationals, Mike set track records of 5.28/280.19 in qualifying #1, but for the third straight race, they lost in round one, this time to R.C. Sherman. Things went much better in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.48/266.35 qualified #5. In the first two rounds, he beat Tony McCallum and low qualifier Bruce Larson. In the semifinal, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.53 with a 5.48/263.15. In the final, he met newcomer Eric Reed. Reed smoked the tires, and Dunn claimed his first win of the season with a 5.60/264.08. The next event on the schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Mike used a 5.31/280.98 (Top Speed) qualified #2. He lost to Art Hendey in round one. Mike took his second win at the Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.44/272.23 (Top Speed). He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, and in the second round, he got a solo because his competition, Whit Bazemore, was unable to run. Both he and Prudhomme smoked the tires in the semifinal, but Mike's 5.83/254 came out on top. In the final, he faced John Martin, but Martin broke, and Dunn's 5.63/268.25 got the victory. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals. Mike qualified #4 with a 5.33/274.97. He beat Martin in the first round. In the second round, both he and Chuck Etchells smoked the tires, and Chuck got the win. Mike and the Joe Pisano team did not run in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were back on tour for the next NHRA event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. Dunn ran 5.44 to qualify #10, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in round one. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.68/255.46 qualified #5 in the thin air. He beat Jim Murphy in round one before losing to Kenny Bernstein's 5.62 with a 5.65 in round two. At Sonoma at the end of July for the NHRA California Nationals, Mike qualified #12 with a 5.59/265.33 but lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. Also ran 5.397 at the 1989 US Nationals. The car was deep PURPLE. The best NHRA National Event times were the 5.281/280.98. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Scott used a 5.40/279.06 to qualify #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.78/218.44 lost to Art Hendey's 5.54/260. He broke through with his first-ever NHRA national event win at the Supernationals on March 5, defeating Bruce Larson in the final. He qualified #6 with a 5.32 and set Top Speed at 279.58. Scott was one of 21 Funny Car drivers at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. It was a tough weekend for Scott as he had used up two engines in qualifying. He qualified #4 and then beat R.C. Sherman in round one, with a 5.69/256.71. He defeated a blower-popping Ed McCulloch in the semifinal with a 5.85/241.65. Still, it cost him another engine, and Kalitta never showed up for his race against Tony McCallum in the final. The following weekend (May 29), he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.57 qualified #8. He lasted until round two before smoking the tires and losing to John Martin. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Sprignationals. His 5.50/272.97 qualified #11. In round one, his 5.59/240.32 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.33/272. His best times were a 5.281 at Ennis Fall and 279.58 (Top Speed) at Houston Spring. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: 1750 lbs. Shotgun motor. Crowerglide Direct Drive. | Car debuted at the AHRA Winternationals and ran 7.57/193.12 to qualify fifth. In the first round, Arnie was matched up against Danny Ongais, and the Maverick had problems getting down the track. At the NHRA Winternationals, another 7.57 qualified the car fourth. The car ran 203 at Pomona, but still lost in the first round, to Larry Arnold. The car was totaled soon after. He was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals on February 15. Behling set Top Speed at 208.32, and in the first round, he got a "bye" run and ran 7.28/205.00. In the second round, he got out of shape and lost to Dick Bourgeois in Don Cook's Corvette. He set a track speed record of 205 at Orlando on February 22. His ET was a 7.53. Magazines of the day had different times for the car. Super Stock had it running a 7.34 while one magazine claimed 7.11/209. Ran 6.99 at US 30 on May 31/1970, to become the second six second funny car in the sport.

Notes: The team sold their '78 car and borrowed the '77 car to run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, the team failed to qualify. The new car was ready for the NHRA Gatornationals, where it was awarded the "Best Appearing." It didn't run too bad either, as Pulde qualified #13 with a 6.39/228.42. But he smoked the tires in the opening round and shut off to 16.30-42.69 in a loss to Billy Meyer's 6.35/239. The following week, the team was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Pulde "only" qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle smoked the tires in their race, and Dale ran 6.32 to advance. He improved to 6.21 in the semi-final to beat Tripp Shumake's 6.82. He faced Paul Smith in the final, and Pulde got his first win of the year with his 6.73/230.17 beating Smith's 6.72/221. He also made it into the final at the next IHRA race, the Dixie Nationals held in Atlanta. There he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the final. He did not compete at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bernstein stopped him again at the next IHRA race, the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. This time it happened in the first round. Pulde overpowered the track, and his 6.72/232.55 lost to Bernstein's 6.19/232. He qualified #4 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.17/231.95. An off-pace 6.80/190.67 in the first round lost to Ron Colson's 6.49/228 in the "Hawaiian." Dale was much happier at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.27 "only" qualified #4. Both he and Frank Oglesby smoked the tires in round one, but Pulde's 6.85 came out on top. He beat Beadle's 6.87 in the semi-final with a 6.49. In the final, he faced Bernstein. Kenny slept, and his 6.31/223 lost to Pulde's 6.47/234.98. At the end of June, he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bernstein. This time Kenny fouled against him. Pulde then lost in the semi-final. A good year with a lot of qualifying success and some round wins. Best times at NHRA Indy in qualifying at 6.084/239.36. Stock Stroke motor. | 6.11 NHRA Englishtown NJ 7/79 lost to Beadles 6.08 quickest side by side FC race

Notes: Meyer started the '83 season by qualifying #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.281/231.95. He smoked the tires in the first round and shut off to an 11.52 that lost to Gary Burgin's 5.94. A week before Gainesville, he was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. Traction was horrible, and it only took a 7.48 to qualify. Still, guys like Raymond Beadle and Kenny Bernstein failed to better that mark and qualify! Meyer's 6.42 got him the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he fouled against Rick Johnson in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.05/225.00, but once again, he went out early. In the first round, his 6.22/184.04 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.87/247 in the "Hawaiian." Meyer qualified on the "bump spot" for the eight-car show at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.56/220 just made the field, but he lost to Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the first round. Early in April, OCIR held its first of two 64-car shows. All 22 Fuel FCs were to make two runs with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Meyer made the final by making runs of 5.97/218.44 over Dale Pulde and 5.86/228.42 over John Force. His final-round opponent was Tripp Shumake, who had reached the final with 5.93 and 5.74 runs, so he had his work cut out. Billy overpowered the track in the final and went up in smoke. He shut off to 11.52 while Shumake ran 6.37 for the win. The following week (April 9), OCIR held another 64 car show run in the same format. Once again, Meyer reached the final, but things didn't look too promising in the first round, where his 6.19/222.77 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.17/240. He stepped up to 5.98/230.76 in his second race over Prudhomme, who had shut off on the line. This time he would face Force in the final, who had gotten there with a 5.91. Billy ran 6.06/233.16 to get the victory over Force. He was back in Atlanta on April 17 for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he failed to qualify for the eight-car field with a 6.03/240.64 (first alternate) best. The following week he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Rain postponed the race until May 1. He qualified #6 (another eight-car show) with a 6.11 but failed to make the finals. Meyer must have been wondering what was going on by this time, as he had run so well in '82. But NHRA had made a rule change for '83, outlawing the use of Nitrous Oxide. Billy had been using it in '82. The NHRA Cajun National was run at Baton Rouge near the end of May, and Billy's 6.04/228.42 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Mark Oswald who was driving for "Candies and Hughes." Meyer smoked the tires and shut down to 10.08/77.38 while Oswald advanced at 6.21/229. Shortly after that (June 5), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Only Oswald had outdone him in qualifying, but Meyer lost to Prudhomme in the first round. The following week he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he ran 6.00/230.17 to qualify #7. But as was the case for most of the year, he had problems in the first round and slowed to 9.12/83.79 and lost to Burgin's 6.27/235. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.16 best failed to qualify for the tough eight-car show. Billy's best times came at the World Finals at OCIR, where he qualified #2 at 5.752/246.57. | Billy Meyer downed Raymond Beadle in the final at the Golden Gate Nationals, 5.75 to 5.78, in what was then the quickest side-by-side Funny Car race of all time. Meyer finished second to Frank Hawley in the 1982 points battle but had slumped badly in 1983, winning just one round of competition heading into the Baylands event. Meyer was not even ranked in the top 10, but after qualifying sixth with a 5.90, his Chief Auto Parts, 7-Eleven Pontiac came to life with a 5.84 in the semis and a 5.75 in the final against low qualifier Beadle. - NHRA | At the '83 Finals, monster-sounding, wheel-lifting, dry hops off the starting line (r/h lane)in round 1. Notes: Funny car on altered chassis. Just to ad a little insight to the discussion of who had the first funny car. This question has been asked many times before. If anyone has any other info, I'd be interested in hearing about it. To clarify the definition of "funny car," it's a tube chassis, all glass body, supercharged engine. To the best of my knowledge, I built the first car that was known as a "funny car." Attached is a picture of the car. I ran it for the first time the third week of May 1965 at US 30 Drag Strip in Gary, Indiana. The following weekend I ran at Gil Cohen's Detroit Dragway on Saturday night & Toledo Dragway on Sunday. I have the timing slips. Ron Pellegrini. Notes: Bob Pickett debuted Mickey Thompson's newly painted Grand Am at the Nitro Bowl at Fremont. The car was still unlettered for the race. The team had trouble getting the car to "stick" as Pickett smoked the tires in all three of his runs. He won his first race where his 8.56/148.27 beat Raymond Beadle's even more smoked in 10.40 in the "Blue Max." A second-round 8.32 lost to Norm Wilcox's 6.51 in the "Hawaiian," and a 7.09 in his last race lost to Gary Burgin's 6.63. The team skipped both the AHRA Winternationals and the NHRA Winter Classic, but they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.301/187.50 qualified #10. But an opening-round 6.655/209.79 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.411/210.77. Shortly after that (February 21), he was at OCIR for its East/West meet. Six cars were competing that were to make three runs each. In Pickett's first race, his 6.38/214.28 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.48/232. The Grand Am broke in the second race and lost to Don Prudhomme. He won his third race easily as his opponent, Tommy Ivo, crossed the centerline. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bob's 6.521/230.17 qualified #11, and in the first round, his 6.57/225.00 beat Beadle, who smoked the tires to a 6.69/228.42 (see linked video). A second-round 6.65/221.13 beat Tom Hoover's 6.74/220.04, but tire smoke did him in in the semifinals, where his 7.09/193.96 lost to Shirl Greer's 6.50/206.42. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The third 200 MPH FC Championship was held on Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events, as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Hoover at a 6.08 and Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Bob's next stop was at Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. He qualified #1 at 6.40/240.37 (Top Speed). The 240 may not have been totally legit, but Bob ran 230/235 several times during the year. Pickett lasted until round two before his 6.47 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.31. The following weekend, he was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Championships. It was supposed to be a 32-car show, but only 30 cars showed. All were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. A 6.62/196.50 beat Bryan Raines in the first race, and he ran a decent 6.38/225.56 in the second race, but he lost to Gary Densham's 6.31/202. His times were not good enough to advance into the final. Early in May, he stopped off at Portland for the Oregon Open. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.40 qualified second to Prudhomme's 6.20. He improved to 6.26/225.56 in the opening round over John Collins' 6.49/202. Unfortunately, he fouled to McCulloch in the semifinal. The next day (May 9), Bob was in Seattle for the NHRA Division Six opener. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.56/215.82 qualified #5. An easy 6.89/209.30 beat Nick Harmon in the first round. He was a tad late in round two, and his 6.46/223.32 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.52/216. The M/T car was at St. Louis for the AHRA Springnationals in the first week of June. He qualified #5 for the eight-car show, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tom McEwen. Bob's 6.60/191.82 lost to McEwen's 6.33/221. The following week, Pickett was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.500/226.70 qualified #5. His 6.485/229.00 in the first round beat Larry Arnold's 6.506/196.07. Prudhomme stopped him again in round two; the "Snake's" 6.378/206.42 dropped his 6.411/222.22. Bob qualified #15 at Englishtown at 6.598/206.89. He lost a close one to Dodger Glenn in round one, 6.837/213 to 6.879/217. He was the first alternate at Indy at 6.295/220.04 but was the fifth qualifier at Seattle at 6.269/199.55. Tom McEwen upset him in round one, 6.40/213.27 to 6.41/229.00. Bob qualified #3 at the World Finals at 6.214/233.76. He beat McEwen in round one, 6.195/233.16 to 6.698/158.73. In round two, he beat Tom Hoover, 6.248/234.37 to 6.429/228.42. Don Prudhomme nipped him in the semis with a 6.251/220.04 to 6.326/230.17 decision. Green Valley info from Bret Kepner.

Notes: Hughes started his season at the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. He beat Larry Arnold in the "Super Ford," but he lost to Clare Sanders in round two in the first round. The team ran at the NHRA Winternationals on February 2 and, due to the poor track surface, ran an 8.31/187.89 that still qualified them #13. Hughes ran Low ET of the first-round with an 8.01/193.96 that beat Randy Walls' 8.22. He again had Low ET of round two with a 7.86/198.23 (Top Speed) that beat Marv Eldridge's 8.25/183. But in the semifinal, Leonard had trouble and shut down to an 11.30 while Clare Sanders motored on to a 7.80 for the win.The team had problems at Riverside and failed to qualify for the HRM Championships. On May 4, they raced at the fourth annual Aquasco Funny Car Invitational, but Leonard got out of shape and lost against Frank Oglesby in the first round. They set a track record 197.63 at Miami-Hollywood's mid-May Funny Car race but failed to get into the finals. On May 18, four FCs were scheduled to race at LaPlace. Mike Burkhart's tow rig had problems, and he was late arriving. So in the first round of racing, Steve Puneky filled in with Charlie Durel's AA/GD. The gasser ran Hughes, and Leonard got out of shape and hit the newly installed guardrail. The damage was light, and in his second race, Hughes ran 7.71/192.76 to defeat Dee Keaton's 7.99/156 in Fred Goeske's "Hemi-'Cuda." He faced Ed Schartman in the last race, and the 'Cuda hit some water on the track and shut off while Schartman ran 7.7/182 to win. Back at Aquasco on May 27 for an eight-car show, Hughes' 7.83/197.36 (track speed record) beat Tommy Grove's 8.10/188 in the first round. Unfortunately, Hughes fouled against Jim Liberman in the semifinal. At Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals on June 8, a 7.65/201.78 qualified fourth. Burkhart fouled against him in the opening round, so Hughes ran an easy 8.04 to advance. In round two, Ronnie Runyan also fouled against the 'Cuda. In the semifinal, a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.52/202.70 put Tom McEwen on the trailer. In the final, he faced Danny Ongais and fouled. He was not happy. A 7.89/203.61 (Top Speed) qualified the team sixth at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15. A first-round 7.58/198.67 over Cogo Eads lead to a second-round meeting with Ongais. Leonard was hoping to correct his loss from the week before by dumping the MT Mustang, but in a straight-up race, Danny's 7.64/190 beat Hughes oh so close 7.65/201.79. The Candies and Hughes team was getting known for putting up the big numbers being one of the few cars to hit 200 mph consistently. This was happening more and more, especially after the team put on the new "zoomie" headers shortly after the Springnationals. On July 4, they were at Southland Dragway, Houma, where Leonard faced Roy Gay's GTO in a best two out of three match. Hughes won the match two straight with runs of 7.80/194 and 7.64/195. Roy was unable to run any better than an 8.53. On July 6, Hughes was back at LaPlace for a match race against Henry Garcia driving the "Car Shop" Camaro. Hughes won two straight with times of 7.78/196.06 and 7.70/196.50. The Camaro could only run an 8.02 best. Another match race was run at Memphis on July 11 against Bobby Woods Nova. This race did not go according to plan for the "Candies and Hughes" team. The car got out of shape in their first race, and Leonard lost to Woods' 7.59/191. In the second race, the Chevy just flat outran the Mopar as Woods' 7.61/191 topped the 'Cuda's 7.65/202.70 (speed was a new track record). Hughes won the final race with a 7.71/195.64 over Bobby's 7.78. Dallas ran an eight-car show on July 26. Hughes' 7.50/206.42 beat a blower-popping Mart Higginbotham in the first round. In the semifinal, a 7.47 (Low ET) at 204.84 beat Dick Harrell's 7.76/196. A 7.67/207 (Top Speed) beat Mike Burkhart in the final. The following day, the team was at Southland Dragway for a match race against Sid Foster, who was now behind the wheel of the "Super Ford." Foster won the first race with an 8.15 when the "Cuda broke a transmission. But Hughes evened things up in the second race where his 7.48/203.16 (track speed record) got the better of the Torino's 7.83/191. Hughes won the match with a 7.57/203 in the final race over Sid's 7.67. If there was any doubt about this team, it was erased at Indy, where Hughes qualified #1 with a 7.24/208.81 (Top Speed) and ran 7.28/207.37 in the first round over Dick Bourgeois' Javelin at 7.45. Another run of 7.25 beat Jack Chrisman's 7.72 in the second round, but a 7.28 in the semifinal lost to Rich Siroonian's 7.25. The team still left on a high note, setting Low ET and Top Speed. The following week, LaPlace hosted a four-car show. Hughes ran really well. In the first race, his 7.33/205.94 (track speed record) beat Mart Higginbotham's 8.01/184. In his second race, Al Vanderwoulde's 8.10/155 fell to his 7.81/154.10. He took his only loss in the third race, where his 7.45/202.24 was beaten by Kelly Chadwick's 7.42/193. Leonard showed up at Gainesville on September 14, gunning for the NHRA Funny Car speed record of 190.26. He made a 7.15/201.34 pass but blew the blower off, so he could not make any other runs. Without a backup run within 2% of his speed, the old record stood. Buckhart was Hughes's next victim on the match race trail. The two met up at Southland on September 28. Hughes lost the first race when his linkage broke, but he returned to score the next two races and the match race victory with times of 7.56/189.64 and 7.46/184.04. Mike's best was 8.13/172. | The team held the Fremont track record at the end of 1969 with a 7.25/202.54. - Danny White | Won first Annual Manufacturers Championship at Rockford (Ill.) Dragway with three sequential 7.37, 7.37, 7.39 passes, setting a track record 7.37/205.46. - RT

Notes: Billy qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He faced Don Prudhomme in the first round, and his 6.18/241 beat the "Snake's" 6.32/201. Meyer lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover in round two. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.28/241.28, and in the first round, his 6.35/239.36 beat Dale Pulde who smoked the tires, but a 6.37/236 in round two lost to Prudhomme's 6.31/236. He failed to qualify at the rain postponed NHRA Cajun Nationals. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.17/241.93 qualified #5, but an off pace 6.68/170.45 in the opening round lost to Prudhomme's 6.21/228. Billy ran really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Although he "only" qualified #4 in the eight-car field, he made it into the final, where his 6.51 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.86 for the money. Earlier, Meyer had set a 231.36 track speed record. The following week (July 8), he won the NHRA Division 4 race at Amarillo. He did not run as well as he was used to at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 6.25/239.36 qualified #12, and he went down to Beadle in the first round.

Notes: Richard attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.82/247.11 was good for the third alternate spot. His luck wasn't much better at the NHRA Arizona Nationals when his 5.58 best failed to qualify. He qualified well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.49/266.74 (#9), but he lost in round one. Hartman ran a career-best of 5.37 at 271.90 to qualify #6 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round, but in round two, his 5.56 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.44. He bettered his previous best at the very next NHRA race, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Only 14 cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so drivers could take it easy in qualifying. Not so for Hartman, as he belted out a 5.36 career-best for the #6 spot. He lasted until round two when his reverser failed, and he gave Bruce Larson a solo into the semifinals. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.56/266.27 qualified #7. He then beat Jerry Caminito in the opening round with a 5.49. Another 5.49 at 263 defeated Tom Hoover in round two. Mark Oswald smoked the tires in the "Candies and Hughes" car against him in the semi-final, and Hartman advanced with a 5.51/265. In the final, he faced low qualifier John Force, and Richard's 5.44/266.42 finished runner-up to Force's 5.35/268. One week later (May 27), the car wascome history at Bristol. He was there for the IHRA Springnationals. During qualifying, a rod broke, and oil got under his tires. The car caught fire a the flaming mess crashed into the guardrail hard. The car was a total loss, but Hartman walked away. Photo from the 1990 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Notes: Third Woody Gilmore car. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Confirmed 6.47 at 221 for this car in 1973. | We ran back to back 6.30s at 235 at Englishtown 1973, match racing Jungle Jim. This was just the 426 Ramchargers motor, not the 475 inch Ed Pink stroker. We could not make that bigger motor run as well as the smaller Rams motor, although the Snake, Ray Beadle, Pat Foster, and others had luck with it. We had two Ed Pink motors, but ran a tenth and a half slower than the 426. We ran high 6.30s at NY National. We ran 6.39 at Detroit. Then the Ramchargers came out and ran 6.38 to get the track record back. Then we came out and ran 6.36 to take it back again. I stopped racing at the end of 1973. I had developed some ulcer problems and that ended my deal. Too much living out a suitcase and not eating right, etc. Had a chance to race for Mazmanian a year later when Danny Ongais went IndyCar racing, but was having too much fun with my young son and stayed out. Ended up driving display rigs for Mr. Gasket and Bob Glidden, but that was as close as I got to the action again. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6/08/15 | Best NHRA national event times of 6.699/214.28 at the 1973 Supernationals.

Notes: Arnie was at Orlando on January 4 for the Drag News Championships. A first-round 8.49/175.78 advanced past Huston Platt, who broke a transmission in Tommy Smith's Dart. Phil Castronovo blew an engine in the second round, and Beswick shut off to an 11.02/114.20 to advance. In the semifinals, he fouled against Larry Arnold. He went to York US 30 for an eight-car show in April, where his 8.24/173.41 lost to Bruce Larson's 7.71/187 in the opening round. He came back later for a grudge race against the "Super Twister," and Arnie won with an 8.06/176.81. He was at New York National Speedway in May for the Springnationals. Beswick lost early, and his best pass was 7.99/180.26. On June 21, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA 1/8 mile Championships. He reached the final against Bobby Rowe driving the "Super Duster," but Arnie broke a rear end and had to settle for the runner-up money. Beswick was at Lions on October 24. 25 FCs were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. Arnie qualified, but in the first round of competition, his 7.38/198.67 lost to Randy Walls' 7.30/204. Did Arnie really run a 6.91/213 in this car? We need confirmation. | Photo from 1970 Springnationals at New York National Speedway, Long Island. - RT

Notes: At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Anderson ran 6.38/226.70 to qualify #11. He had problems in the first round against Tom Hoover and shut off to 9.83. Tom was the second alternate for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.51/227.27 best. At NHRA Columbus, he hit 6.38 again (speed unavailable) but was the third alternate. In July, the team was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tom qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.11 (Low ET), but he smoked the tires in the first round he shut down to a losing 11.90. A 6.34 (speed unavailable) made him the second alternate at Sanair. The team took a massive jump in performance with a 6.088/236.84 #11 qualifying effort at Indy. Unfortunately, Tom lost a close 6.15/236 to 6.185/237.46 decision in round one to Raymond Beadle. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the season. Was he in the Omni by Indy?

Notes: This had to be Gary's best season behind the wheel of a flopper. Although it sure didn't start that way. He was at Fremont for the Nitro Bowl race, where all the cars made three runs. In his first race, his 6.67/204.08 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.55/207. In his second race, he was to run Roger Garten, but Burgin's car failed to fire. He finally won his third race, where his 6.63 beat a tire-smoking Bob Pickett in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. He ran at the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson, where he qualified #3 with a 6.47/205.47. He lasted until the second round when his 7.02 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.99. The following week, he was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #1 with a 6.27/233.76 and an opening-round 6.47/220.04 beat Twig Zeigler. Shirl Greer fouled against him in round two, so Burgin took it easy and advanced with a 7.11/175.43. He set Top Speed at 236.84 in the semifinals while running 6.28 to beat Dale Emery. He faced Prudhomme in the final. Unfortunately, he crossed the centerline, and the "Snake" got the win. Burgin qualified #1 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.29/223.32, but the car went into a wheelstand in his first-round race, and he lost to Tom Prock. At Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals, Gary again made it into the final. He made runs of 6.59 and 6.46 to meet with Prock; this time, he took a little nap, and his 6.43/222.22 finished runner-up to Tom's 6.52/219. He was at Rockingham early in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, and while he failed to reach the finals, he did set Top Speed at 228.00. On May 23, he was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. Burgin made it into the semifinal before losing to eventual winner Raymond Beadle's 6.49 in the "Blue Max" with a slightly quicker 6.48. Gary lost to Beadle at the NHRA Springnationals, as well. Gary qualified #8 with a 6.53 and a first-round 6.59/214 beat Tom Hoover's 6.60/218. The two met in the second round, and Burgin smoked the tires while Raymond went 6.60/219 for the win. The next week (June 20), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He won the race by beating R.C. Sherman's 6.58/226 in the final with a 6.29/233.32. Earlier in the day, Gary reset the IHRA ET record to 6.14. On July 4, he was at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. Gary won this one as well, and he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.20/236.84. He beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the final. He ran well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals as well. A 6.22 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme. A first-round 6.18 beat Eddie Pauling in Johnny Loper's Monza. In round two, a 6.29 beat Pee Wee Wallace's "Virginian," but in the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires. Opponent McEwen cruised into the final with a 6.62/202. Gary won Englishtown's Funny Car and Halter Top Nationals later in July. He ran a best of 6.52/226 and beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final. In August, he won the Race of Champions event at Maple Grove. He set Top Speed and low et at 6.27/228 (track record). In the final, he beat R.C. Sherman. Surprisingly, he failed to qualify for the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. The front end came up on every one of his qualifying passes, and he had to get out of it. He then competed at the IHRA US Open. He qualified #1 with a 6.38/230.76 but failed to reach the finals. The next win is the one that makes the year. At Indy for the US Nationals, Gary qualified #4 with a 6.127/233.76. A first-round 6.123/221.67 beat John Lombardo, while in round two, a 6.21/238.09 (Top Speed) beat Prock's 6.52. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 6.21/231.95 when Beadle's car had fuel injector problems and shut off. In the final, he faced Prudhomme's all-conquering Monza. Gary was up to the task, beating the "Snake's" 6.46/226 with a 6.25/237.46. There was no love lost between Prudhomme and Burgin at this time, so the win was especially sweet. Shortly after that, he went to Epping, New Hampshire, for its Funny Car Nationals. Gary looked like he was well on his way to another win as he beat Dale Creasy in the first round, with a 6.49/212. Another 6.49 at 229 (Top Speed) beat Fred Dename in round two, and a third-round (32 car show) 6.40/207 advanced when George Johnson broke. Unfortunately, the win was costly as he blew his engine and was replaced by Al Bergler for the semifinal. On September 26, he made the final at the IHRA All-American Championships at Bristol. Unfortunately, the car failed to fire, and Larry LaDue soloed for the victory. Formerly listed a 6.11 for this year, but we need confirmation on that.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Did Johnny go 5.427/268.65 somewhere this year (perhaps a match race at Englishtown?) Seems very quick. Listing his best NHRA times until we get confirmation. | West's first time out driving for Roland Leong was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The team did pretty well, qualifying #8 with a 5.775/255.68 and running an even better 5.749/256.41 to beat Tripp Shumake's 5.85/237 in the first round. In the second round, he ran Dale Pulde, but West crossed the centerline on his run and was disqualified. They qualified #8 again at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.87/256.55. Unfortunately, West smoked the tires to a 6.35/250.13 loss to Scott Kalitta's also traction plagued 6.22/186. At Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Johnny qualified #8 (again) with a 5.86/251.25. He beat Bruce Larson in round one, and a 6.84/244.83 advanced into the semifinals when John Force crossed the centerline. In the semis, he fouled against Jim Head. Famoso held an eight-car Funny Car show for its Bakersfield March (May) Meet. Roland and crew were there and West ran a 5.88/252.10 to qualify #5. He faced low qualifier Force in the first round, and his 5.84 lost to Force's 5.80. Baton Rouge and the Cajun Nationals was NHRA's next stop and a 6.01/243.70 qualified Johnny #10. He picked up to a 5.83/252.59 in the first round, to beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.88/237. He lost traction in round two, but his 6.13/240.89 still beat Scott Kalitta's 6.87/145. In the semifinals, Johnny's 5.94/244.43 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.86/245. On June 15 they were at Columbus, Ohio, for the NHRA Springnationals. West qualified the car #6 with a 5.83/251.46 and beat Gary Phillips in the first round, but he lost in round two. They made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and Johnny qualified #2 with a 5.84/252.10 behind Bernstein's 5.62 (Low ET). A first-round 5.91/251.39 beat Jerry Caminito and in the semifinals, a 5.90/249.30 beat Kalitta's 6.05/240. In the final, he met Bernstein and the Daytona broke, giving Kenny a solo for the victory. At the end of June, the were up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The "Hawaiian" was making some horsepower there as he ran a 5.74 at a whopping 261.93 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. West ran a first-round 5.78/234.86 over Ed McCulloch's 5.94/250. In round two, a 5.79/259.21 beat a tire smoking Tom McEwen, but in the semifinals, he fouled against Bernstein. He won an eight-car show at Englishtown on July 2. His best run there was a 5.78/258.62 in the first round, while beating Larson's 6.31/184. He got the win by beating Tom Hoover in the final with a 6.17/241.93 over Tom's 6.41/237. They were back at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.72/261.17 qualified #6 and he beat Caminito in the first round, but a 5.85 in round two lost to Bernstein's 5.67. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Leong proved that he could still tune a car to big numbers. A 5.87/253.16 (Top Speed) qualified #3. West made his way into the semifinals before running an off pace 6.03/237.71 that lost to Bernstein's 5.86/242. He qualified #4 with a 5.78/257.87 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Johnny beat Brad Tuttle's quicker 5.93/247 in the first round, with a 5.95/250.00. In the second round, he lost to McCulloch. A week later (August 24), they were at Cordova for the World Series where West set a 260.34 track speed record. Qualified number one at the NHRA Finals with his best national event times, 5.584/262.62. Unfortunately, Dale Pulde got to him in round one, 5.80 to 5.90.

Notes: Etchells qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.24/281.60. In the first round, he was shut off on the line as he broke a fuel line. Mark Oswald soloed into round two. He qualified #1 at the NHRA Quality Care Nationals at Arizona with a 5.052 (Low ET) at 96.24. An opening round 5.13/288.92 beat Jack Wyatt and a second-round 5.17/289.38 stopped Kenji Okazaki. But he fell off to 5.20/247.79 in the semifinal that lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.18/278. Chuck's best times were the 5.052 from Phoenix and 297.61 from Maple Grove, although he duplicated the 5.052 at Ennis Fall.

Notes: Simon won over a sixteen-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet. After an easy first-round win, he ran 6.30/229.00 in round two over Henry Harrison, who had his parachute fall out early. In the semi-final, Jim Dunn broke against him, and he advanced with a 6.41/225.00. He faced Jim Adolph in the final, and Menzies' car broke and slowed to 10.95, but that was enough for the win when Adolph crossed the centerline and was disqualified. Menzies was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.29 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but he lost in the opening round. In June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals but ended up as the fourth alternate with a 6.40 best. His next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 6.41 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but he lost a blower belt in round one and slowed to a 6.61 loss against Raymond Beadle's 6.31 in the "Blue Max." Simon's 6.34/233.16 was the first alternate at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The team ran 4/5 NHRA national events with best times of 6.30/235.60 at Seattle. Used Nitrous. The team began the year with a Donovan but switched to a Keith Black Hemi in the racing year.

Notes: Mike qualified #4 at Pomona with a 5.39/266.82. In the opening round, his 5.44/251.53 beat Tom Hoover's 5.51/269. He then beat Al Hofmann in round two with a 5.46/263.92. Low qualifier Glenn Mikres stopped him in the semi-final with a 5.28/284 to his 5.39/266.98. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.38/266.50. He beat Jerry Caminito in round one and got some "revenge" on Mikres in round two, where his 5.36/274 defeated Glenn's 5.35/280. But he lost in the semi-final, where another 5.36 at 263 fell to John Force's 5.30/270. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Mike's 5.33/270.51 qualified #6. He beat Hofmann in round one, and a 5.46/251.39 in round two lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.30/278. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.31/271.98 qualified #4. Gary Densham lost to his 5.36/261.62 in round one. In the second round, Dunn's 5.34/264.93 dropped Mikres' 5.49/266. He had a close race against Mark Oswald in the semi-final that saw both drivers run 5.38 (Dunn at 269.62), but eventual winner Oswald got the "win" light. The team then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was just an eight-car field, and Mike qualified #3 with a 5.37/271.00. Oswald stopped him again, this time in round one, where Mike's 5.52/264.23 lost to Mark's 5.38/249. He was a little "off pace" at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He "only" qualified #9 at 5.36/271.49. He beat Hofmann in round one before losing to Force in round two. He made up for it by winning the NHRA Mid-South Nationals held at Memphis in the first week of May. He had qualified #3 with a 5.31/273.97. A 5.35/269.86 beat Freddie Neely, followed by a 5.36/276.07 over Caminito's 5.59/258. In the semi-final, he defeated Jim White driving the "Hawaiian" with a 5.33. He faced Tom Hoover in the final, and Hoover had been running 5.4s. Mike picked up to a 5.30/275.31 in the final to claim the victory over Tom's 5.71/215. He then doubled it up by winning the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. His 5.28/273.39 qualified second to White's 5.25/278. These two would work their way into the final together. Mike also won the Mile High Nationals this year. His best times were 5.225 at Maple Grove and 279.50 at Sonoma. Photo from the 1991 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio.

Notes: Tom finally got onto direct-drive bandwagon in '88, had a few wheelstands. Photo from Indy 1988. Confirmed 261.47 at Brainerd 1988. Where was the 264.70 run? | At the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #9 with a 5.57. He beat low qualifier John Force in the first round, and Jim Head in round two before losing to Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Tom was at DeSoto Dragway in March for the IHRA Supernationals. In the first round his Firebird broke behind the line giving eventual winner Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" T-Bird a solo into the semifinals. He made the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and lasted until round two where he got out of shape and shut off against Ed McCulloch. He also lasted until the second round at the IHRA Texas Nationals. There his 5.55/260.41 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.50/264. The next NHRA stop was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Hoover qualified #13 with a 5.77, but he lost to John Martin in round one. A week later (May 22), he was running at the IHRA Springnationals where he ran 5.76 in qualifying #5. In the first round, he only needed a 6.02/216.91 to advance when Richard Tharp, driving the "Blue Max," got out of shape and shut off. In the semifinals, Tom ran another 5.76 at 242.61, but lost to Oswald's 5.64/261. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May, and Hoover qualified for the show, but lost to Bruce Larson in the first round.

Notes: "Jungle Jim" had a pretty good season in '73. His new Vega had been running well. He went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.58/214.79 to qualify #5 in the 32 car field. That was impressive considering there were 75 funny cars at the meet. He didn't just qualify well, he ran well in eliminations as well. An opening round 6.49/225.00 beat Frank Huff's 6.93/212 in the "King Cobra" and in round two his quick-leaving 6.60/211.76 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.59/217. Jim had another close race in round three that saw his 6.57/221.13 beat Mart Higginbotham's 6.62/218. His easiest run on his way to the final came in the semifinals where Jim Paoli smoked the tires against him. Liberman advanced with a 6.61/212.76. He faced Don Schumacher in the final and the "Shoe" had the edge. He had been running quicker and quicker in every round. His semifinal win came with a 6.42. Sure enough, Jim tried to get the power to the ground in the final and smoked the tires while Schumacher ran 6.44/220 or the win. Jim then went to Miami-Hollywood for its Funny Car Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show and Jim once again qualified #5, this time with a 6.86. He improved to 6.65/220.58 in the first round, to beat Pee Wee Wallace and in round two he beat Paul Smith in the "Fireball Vega", but Jim wounded his engine on the run and was unable to make it back for the semifinals. The NHRA Winternationals at Pomona was a mess. The track was horrible and it was rained out twice. Still, even with the tricky track conditions that kept a lot of strong teams from qualifying, Jim showed that he knew how to "read" the track and managed to qualify #14. Unfortunately, with the rain delay, Jim was unable to stay for eliminations and alternate Tom McEwen took his place in the field. He was back at Miami for its Winter Funny Car Championships. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.86 behind Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." He never ran that slow again during eliminations. He opened with a 6.72/197.80 to beat Al Marshall's 6.91/210 in the "Tyrant." Liberman had to race Marshall again in the semifinals when he got back in on the "break rule" and the results were the same. Jim’s 6.78/207.37 beat Al's 6.82/209. This put Jim in the final against Tharp. It was a close race, but JJ set Low ET and Top Speed in winning with a 6.65/216.80 over Tharp's 6.70/215. He then went to Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals where he qualified #3 with a 6.74/209.30. He dropped his ET by over two tenths in the first round, when he ran 6.50 to advance over a fouling Paul Radici. He took an easy second round win and then lost to Kelly Brown in the "Wonder Wagon" Vega in the semifinals. Jim’s 6.90/212.26 lost to Kelly's motor-blowing 6.88. Brown was unable to return to run in the final so Liberman was reinstated. It was a rematch of the AHRA Winternationals final, right down to the winner. Schumacher’s 6.55/215 beat JJ's 6.81/216.86 for the victory. In April he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He had a bit of luck in the first round, where his smoky 7.74/130.81 advanced when his competition, Harlan Thompson, had his transmission stick in low gear. After that, Jim ran strong. He set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.44/215.31 that beat Al Segrini. In the final, he faced Jake Crimmins driving the "Swensen & Lani" Mustang. Liberman picked up the win with a 6.48/215.31 over Jake's 7.03/167. On April 28, he was at Capitol, where although he failed to reach the final, he was one of four cars that ran 6.5's. The next day he won at Atco. He then won an Funny Car show at Aquasco in early May before going to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grand American race. He qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field and in the first round, he beat McEwen's 6.94 with a 6.82. A second round 6.70/205 advanced when Jim Nicoll broke and he shot to a 6.64/214.28 in the semifinals to beat Dean LaPole's Chevy powered car at 6.81. This put him into the final against Gene Snow. Gene had trouble and slowed to 14.11 while JJ picked up yet another win with a 6.86/200.44. Another win came in June over a sixteen-car field at Connecticut. There Jim ran his old friend Lew Arrington in the final. Jim was running too strong for Arrington on this day as JJ set Low ET in the final with a 6.59/213.27 that easily covered "Brutus" at 7.00/205. Liberman didn't fare so well at a best of three match race against Pat Foster driving the "Barry Setzer" Vega at Englishtown. In their first race Foster's 6.27/226 beat Jim's 6.55/220.58. In the second race, JJ's throttle linkage broke and he shut down on the line. No ET's were recorded in their third race, but Foster led them through at 227 while Jim crossed the line second at 218.44. It was a minor setback as then Jim went to Cayuga for the Canadian All-Pro Championships where he beat Bobby Rowe in the final with a 6.95/200.89. He lost early on July 4 at an eight-car show at Englishtown where Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" Demon beat him in the first round. He was back at Englishtown a couple of weeks later for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #11 with a 6.59, but a first-round 6.84/210 lost to Foster's 6.66/208. In Nov, Jim set Atco record at 6.45.

Photo from the 1982 US Nationals. | Tom qualified #4 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.04/231.95. He beat Bobby Hilton and Dale Pulde in the first two rounds before losing to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 6.11/234 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" with a 6.29/164.49 in the semifinals. A week later (June 20), the team was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Anderson’s 5.98 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. He beat Billy Meyer and Gary Burgin to reach the final against Pulde. In the final, Tom had traction problems and slowed to a 6.80 loss while Pulde grabbed the victory with a 6.04. The NHRA Grandnationals in Canada was another eight-car show and Tom qualified #7 with a 6.14/233.76. Unfortunately, he lost early in eliminations.

Notes: Bob debuted the new Starfire at Fremont's Nitro Bowl. He set Low ET and Top Speed there with a 6.49/210.77 in the opening round. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals as the 5th alternate (times unavailable). At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.709/173.41 qualified on the "bump spot" of the sixteen-car field. In the first round, Pickett beat Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" at 6.45/197.80, but he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Don Prudhomme. On April 9, he was Irwindale for the big 64 car show. While Pickett never reached the final, he did turn the third-best ET, a 6.28. Tulsa was his next stop for the AHRA Springnationals. There he lasted until round two before losing to Gene Snow. In June, he went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.43/228.43 behind Tom Hoover's 6.39. Unfortunately, he lost a driveshaft and the race in the first round to Tom Prock. He got his first NHRA National event victory a week later (June 12) at the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #8 with a 6.24/231.95. He bested Gordon Mineo in round one, 6.25/212.76 to 6/65/177. In round two, he then ran 6.21/228.42 over Eddie Pauling's identical 6.21 at 198.67. He took out Billy Meyer's 7.05 in the semis with an excellent 6.19/228.42. In the final, he faced none other than Don Prudhomme in the Army-sponsored Arrow. Bob ripped off a 6.22/231.95 to do what few did in '77 - beat the "Snake." Don followed Pickett through with a 6.26/236.84. It was a really good showing for the team. At the next NHRA race, the Summernationals at Englishtown, Bob qualified #10 with a 6.33/228.42. But he broke against Tom McEwen in the opening round. He had another first-round loss at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42 on July 31. Pickett qualified well, running 6.38/227.77 for the #3 spot in the eight-car show, but a 6.56/225.00 lost to Billy Graham's 6.35/222 in the opening round. The team did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they did attend the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. The Starfire ran well there, beating Al Bergler in the first round, with a 6.24, and he beat Prock in round two before losing to Dale Pulde's 6.13 in the semifinals with a 6.21. A week later (August 21), he was at Spokane Raceway for the AHRA World Finals. In the first round, he ran 6.52/208.80 over Bob Papirnick, but in round two, his 6.57/220.04 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.45/212 in the "Blue Max." The team qualified #11 at Indy with a 6.213/229.00. Bob beat Gordie Bonin in round one, 6.369/216.87 to 6.62/224. In round two, he lost to Tom Prock, 6.24/221 to 6.325/208.33. Bob grabbed the #13 spot at Ontario for the World Finals at 6.26/233.76. He shut off on the line against Gordie Bonin in round one. | The 6.17 might have been run during qualifying at the '77 Manufacturer's Meet, which Pickett won, according to my long-gone NDs and Drag News as a 16-year old Funny Car geek. - Joe Moore

Notes: Meyer tried hard to be the NHRA Funny Car Champion for '77. You have to give him credit, as he had a rough season. Before the NHRA season started, he went to Irwindale for the New Year's Day race. He made it into the final before losing to Jim Dunn. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he failed to qualify. The same thing happened at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his best of 6.76 was good for the first alternate. A week later (March 20), he was at LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 Opener, where he took the win. He stopped off at Irwindale for the 64 car Funny Car show but failed to run well enough to reach the finals. On May 15, he was at Houston for the NHRA Division 4 race. A 6.75/203 beat Paul Smith in the first round, but he got out of shape in the semifinals against eventual winner Dale Emery and shut off to an 8.78. Meyer's next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was only an eight-car field, and his 6.50/207.85 qualified #5, meaning that he would race low qualifier John Lombardo in the first round. John fouled in their first-round race, and Billy's 6.68/187.50 advanced. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.41/211.26 to beat Rob Bruins' 6.91/171 in the "Green Elephant." This put him into the finals against Johnny White. Unfortunately, Billy broke, and White got the win with a 6.64/197. At the NHRA Springnationals, Meyer qualified #2 with a 6.11 and lasted until the semifinals, where he broke a valve and slowed to a 7.05 loss to Bob Pickett. He did well at the Byron Manufacturer's Race, where he ran a best of 6.35. In the final, he ended up as runner-up to Don Prudhomme with his 6.44/228 losing to the "Snake's" 6.27/234. Meyer won the NHRA Division 3 race at US 131 Martin, Michigan, in July. A final round 6.22 (Low ET) at 219.31 beat Ron Colson's 6.34/218 in the "Hawaiian." It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He came off the trailer on Friday and blew an engine on a 6.46 qualifying attempt. After installing a new engine for Saturday's qualifying, Billy ran 6.17 to qualify the car easily, but he decided to make one more pass Saturday night. It was a 6.41. After qualifying ended, Meyer's 6.17/225.00 held for the #4 spot in the field. In the first round, Al Segrini shut down to a 12.76 while Billy hurt an engine on a 6.78. More thrashing in between rounds. In round two, he again got lucky when Dodger Glenn got out of shape and shut off the "Frantic Ford," and Meyer advanced with a 6.82/170. In the semifinals, he ran Ray Sherman, and Sherman went up in smoke, and a 6.66/193 propelled Billy into the final against Prudhomme. There, Meyer's Camaro broke, and Prudhomme soloed to the victory. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.33/216.34 qualified #4. In the opening round, Meyer's 6.54/205 beat Al Hanna's 6.47/222, but on the run, his engine let go causing the car to go into a fireball. Meyer got it stopped, and he received second-degree burns on his hands. The Camaro body was destroyed, and the chassis was burnt pretty bad. He then borrowed Johnny White's Mustang to drive at the NHRA Division 4 race at Baton Rouge. He also borrowed Al Bergler's car. It wasn't until Indianapolis before he was back in his own car. There he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 6.18/227.84. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Prudhomme. Don's 6.14/234 beat Billy's 6.28/218.97. Everything "clicked" for Meyer at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.19/213.27. He made an easy 9.56 pass in the opening round when Mike Miller's Mustang broke on his burnout. He was involved in a tire-smoking battle with Jim Adolph that saw Meyer's 6.56 coming out on top in round two. He won his semifinal race with a 6.90/195 when Gary Cochran crossed the centerline in Jim Terry's Skyhawk. That put him in the final against Dunn. Jim was to slouch as he had run 6.2's in eliminations. In the final, Dunn shut off, and Meyer got his first NHRA National Event win with a 6.53/211.26. Billy is credited with starting the semi-tractor craze to racing (see the trailer in the rear). Featured in Car Craft's Rich Man, Poor Man article. Ran 6.76 at Gainesville, 6.11 at Columbus, 6.17 at Englishtown, 6.33 Sanair, 6.18 at Indy, and 6.19 at Ontario.

Notes: Hoover started the '81 season by qualifying #6 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 7.03/215. This was his first race since his accident in June '80. He lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.56/211 in the first round, with a 6.85/209. As you can tell by the times, traction was marginal. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.28/213.27 best was the first alternate. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #2 with a 5.954/234.37. This was his first five-second run and the 5th entry into the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. His car came up ailing in the first round, and he lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." On March 22, he faced Don Prudhomme in a best-of-three-match race at State Capitol Raceway. He lost the match-turning a best of 6.45/201 compared to the "Snake's" 6.25/211. Tom was at Green Valley Raceway on April 5 for the NHRA Western Regional Opener, where he qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.69/212.26. He really picked it up in the first round when he beat Craig Epperly with a 6.17/238.09. In the semifinals, he beat Tripp Shumake with a 6.25/240.64 (Top Speed), and in the final, he faced Beadle. Hoover won with a 6.32/231.95 over the "Max's" 6.45/231. Hoover's next good showing came at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He even beat Prudhomme in the semifinals before losing in the final to upstart Tom Hovland. Hoover's 6.94/213 finished runner-up to Hovland's 6.85/218. At the AHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis, Hoover qualified #1 with a 6.31/226.71. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.36/228.43 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.28/235. Back in the NHRA competition on June 21 for the Springnationals, Tom ran 6.12/233.16 to qualify #3. Another 6.12/226 stopped Shirl Greer in Larry Coogle's "Sting" in the first round. His 6.17/224 beat Roy Harris in round two, but in the semifinals, he slowed to 6.36 at 202.24 in a loss to Raymond Beadle's 6.15/227 in the "Blue Max."He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals or Englishtown for the Summernationals, but he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. A 6.30/229.06 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.18/235. Tom's 6.45/229.59 beat Brian Conway in round one, but he had to shut down on the line with an oil leak in the semifinals. John Collins was given a solo into the final. On July 26, he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Western Regional race. He ran a solo 6.37/233.76 in the opening round after opponent Doc Halladay could not run due to a fire he had during qualifying. In the semifinal, his off-pace 6.75/222.22 lost to the eventual winner Mike Dunn's 6.24/236.

He skipped going to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Jim's 5.25/291.54 (Top Speed) qualified #7. In the semi-final, his 5.22/291.26 lost to Kenji Okazaki's 5.19/270. Maple Grove was the next stop on the NHRA tour, and Epler qualified #6 for the Keystone Nationals with a 5.22/279.06.
