Notes: This is the second car of 1969, the mini Charger. After crashing the car at the Winternationals, Roland Leong had Logghe build a new Charger, and he debuted on May 24 at an eight-car show at Lions. The car was still a little too new, and his best of 7.90 failed to qualify. On May 30, Reyes was at Irwindale for another eight-car show, but the team had the "bugs" worked out this time. He set Low ET at 7.47 but lost his first-round race when Mike Van Sant's 7.55/196 in the Invader beat his 7.65/184.80. But Reyes got back in with the break rule in effect when Johnny Wright, who won his first-round race, broke and couldn't return for the semifinal. The Hawaiian had the lowest ET of the first-round losers, so the team was brought back into the show to race Mike Van Sant again, only this time in the semis. The Invader lost fire on the line, and Reyes advanced to the finals, where he ran a 7.64/184.80 to win over Ron Leslie. The next day (May 31), he raced at OCIR for the Funny Car 500. A 7.40/200.06 qualified #1, and a better 7.38 (Low ET) at 199.55 got past the first-round, and another 7.38/199.11 beat Gordon Mineo in the second round. Larry got a free ride into the final when Manuel Herrera blew his motor on the line. In the final, a 7.63/200.07 (Top Speed) beat Randy Walls for another win. Larry was at Martin, Michigan's US 131, for a best-of-three-match race against Charlie Allen on July 12. Things didn't go well for Reyes on this day as his 7.78/182.54 lost the first race to Allen's 7.68/185. In the second race, the big Charger was shut off on the line with an oil leak, and Allen soloed with an 8.49 for the match race victory. On July 20, the "Hawaiian" was at Suffolk for a best of three against Della Woods and her "Funny Honey" Charger. A 7.65/181.44 beat her 7.97/178 in the first race, and in the second race, Della's car lost a rear end, and Larry's 8.36/137.82 won the match. Reyes made a third run of 7.86/158.45. On October 11, the "Hawaiian" was at Irwindale for a best of three match race against the Fuel altered of Sush Matsubara. Reyes won the match by winning the first two races with a 7.53/190.26, beating Sush's 7.78/194 in the first race, and his 7.72/176.81 beat the out of shape roadster in the second race. Matsubara did win the last race with a 7.78/194 when the Charger lost a transmission. Larry finished the year by winning on December 14 at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He qualified second with a 7.45 but improved to a 7.38/193.96 in the first round, over Johnny Wright's 7.59/179. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 7.27/199.10 over Ray Alley's 7.74/194. In the final, a 7.35/199.54 beat Dave Beebe. By the end of the season, Reyes had racked up an 80% win record for '69.

Notes: Confirmed 262.08 at Ennis at first nitro match race at the track (before the national event) August 1986. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Billy started the '86 season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.75/241.28. He was a little late out of the gate in the first round, as his 5.85/242.58 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.91/241 in Joe Pisano's Daytona. He attended an eight-car show at Atlanta where he qualified #3 with a 6.20/210.28. He shut off against Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Meyer qualified #3 with a 5.76/251.11. He beat Jim Head in the first round, before smoking the tires and losing to Tom McEwen in round two. Firebird raceway hosted the Coor's Funny Car race in April and Billy had tire-smoking problems on both his runs; he lost to John Force and Johnny West with times of 12.62 and 6.38/205.01. We needless to say, he failed to make it to the finals. On April 20 he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he ran 5.75/252.10 to qualify #3. He beat Tom Hoover before smoking the tires to a 6.12/244.16 loss to Ed McCulloch who also had traction problems at 6.02/242. In May, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet. He ran 5.84/252.80 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He stepped up to a 5.77/250 in the first round, to beat Rodney Flournoy's 6.46 Firebird, but in round two, a 5.78/253.52 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.76/245. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 5.75/256.99 qualified #4. In round one, he beat Paul Smith's 5.99/230 with a 5.76/253.66. A second round 5.89/241.80 advanced when Head got out of shape and crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, a 5.86/245.40 beat Johnny West's 5.94/244 in the "Hawaiian." That put him in the final against McEwen. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost with an 8.37/94.59 while the "Goose" took the victory with a 5.78/249. Meyer qualified #5 with a 5.83/242.65 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. At the end of June, he was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.84/240.64 qualified #5 for the show. In the first round, Billy's ailing 9.22/91.53 advanced when Bruce Larson smoked the tires and shut off. In the second round, he fouled away a 5.81 and lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.67. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Billy qualified #4 with a 5.66/255.82. He beat Head in the first round, but in the second round the Mustang broke on the line giving Hoover a free ride into the semifinals. He lost early at the NHRA Mile High Nationals as well, after qualifying #6 with a 5.91/191.53. Meyer qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.88/245.23. It was dreaded because if you qualified in that spot, you faced the number one qualifier in your first race. That's exactly what Billy did, but he lucked out when low qualifier Bernstein fouled away a 5.81 while Meyer motored into the second round with a 6.12/180.00. In the second round, he ran a 5.96/238.09 that lost to Hoover's 5.91/256.

Notes: Hofmann couldn't have started the season any better; he won the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He had qualified #3 at 5.13/297.61. He then improved to 5.06/305.18 in the opening round to beat Mark Sievers. In the second round, his 5.13/294.88 defeated Del Worsham's 5.21/288. In the semifinal, he had a close race against Gary Clapshaw that saw both drivers run 5.16 (Al at "only" 250.20). But Hofmann got the win. In the final, he faced the always tough John Force. John had problems and slowed to 5.40/228 while Al ran 5.05/302.72 for the victory. While the Winternationals was a race for Al to remember, the NHRA Arizona Nationals was one he would probably want to forget. He "only" qualified #11 with a 5.28/289.01 and was packing up and headed home after the first round, where he lost to Whit Bazemore. Things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Al qualified #1 at 5.06/287.90. A 5.13/295.66 in the first round beat Gary Bolger, but he fouled against Cruz Pedregon in round two. After that, he visited Roy Hill's driving school to get better on the lights. He then went to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals and ran 5.08/299.90 to qualify #3. He got "revenge" on Bazemore by beating him with a 5.09/298.70 in the first round. Another 5.09 at 296.54 in the second round beat Mark Oswald's 5.21/283. He headed to the final after his 5.12/290.13 defeated Worsham's 5.17/286 in the semifinal. Unfortunately, Al smoked the tires in the final and shut down to 9.81/82.84, while Force got the win with a 5.05/294. Another runner-up finish to Force came at Rockingham in mid-April for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was just an eight-car field, and his 5.12/294.02 qualified #3. Dean Skuza crossed the centerline against him in the first round, and Al advanced with a 5.19/286.62. In the semifinal, he had a good race with Cruz Pedregon that saw his 5.16/293.54 beat Cruz's 5.18/292. His final 5.18/292.96 fell to Force's 5.13/277. Shortly after that (April 21), he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This was not a memorable event for him. His 5.32/270.75 qualified #8, and he lost to Chuck Etchells in round one. Things went only slightly better at Richmond in the first week of June for the NHRA Virginia Nationals, where he qualified #3 at 5.09/293.82. Kenji Okazaki's 5.35/267 lost to his 5.07/292.40 in the first round, but a late 5.14/290.88 lost to Worsham's 5.16/284 in round two. Al ran his best times of the year with a semifinal finish at Topeka, running 4.986/308.21 in eliminations before losing to Force. Hofmann came to Indy without Crew Chief Tom Anderson after nearly six years together. He qualified 7th at 5.08/299 with new crew chief Jim Ermalovich. Hofmann marched to the finals (improving to 5.03 and 306.01 in the process), then wheelstood against John Force and lost. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy.

Notes: Beadle started the '84 season at the NHRA Winternationals, where he smacked the guardrail while beating Gary Southern in the first round with a 6.21. He could not make the second round due to damage to the car. Things improved at the Gatornationals, where he qualified for #8 with a 5.88/253.52. A first-round 6.04/202.70 beat Jim White's 6.12/233, and in round two, he shut down to a winning 8.34/109.35 when Tom McEwen broke. In the semifinals, he faced Kenny Bernstein and unfortunately smoked the tires, losing to Kenny's 5.79/256. He qualified #8 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.01 but lost early. In April, the team was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Raymond ran 5.92 to qualify #11. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. On May 6, Raymond qualified #3 at Rockingham with a career-best (to this point) 5.77/258.52 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lasted until round two before his tire-smoking, 7.24/128 lost to Jim Head's 6.09/250. He also smoked the tires in a first-round loss to Al Segrini at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bristol was the next stop for the team for the IHRA Springnationals. Beadle's 5.89/250 qualified #6, and his 5.95/249.30 advanced over a fouling Paul Smith in the "Custom Body" car in the first round. He and Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car had a great race in round two that saw Oswald's 5.82/254 get the better of the "Max's" 5.89/252.10. They were at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships shortly after. A 5.96 qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field, and Beadle lasted until round two before his off-pace 6.50 lost to Smith's 5.99. Beadle had won the '83 NHRA Springnationals and hoped to repeat in '84. He started by qualifying #8 at Columbus with a 5.94/248.61. An opening round 5.97/238.09 beat Head's 6.07/243, and in round two, a 5.93/247.25 took out Sherm Gunn's 6.28/191. But his repeat chances were over in the semifinal when Beadle's 5.96/241.93 lost to eventual winner Oswald's 5.89/242. Things didn't go so well in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.93/251.39 but lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer in the opening round. The following week (July 8) saw more of the same. They were in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Raymond's 5.79/259.36 qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field. But in round one, a sheared fuel pump ended their chances of advancing. But after a couple of weeks of lows came the highs. Beadle won for the first time in thirteen months at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A lot of racer's luck helped out in this win, but it was still a win. He had only qualified #11 with a 5.87/247.93. Don Prudhomme had a blower explode in the opening round of eliminations, and Beadle advanced with a 6.58. Tim Grose smoked the tires in the second round, and a 5.92/249.30 advanced the "Max." He was to face Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals, but the "Budweiser King" broke a reverser after its burnout, and Beadle singled into the final with a 5.93/250.00. He went up against Meyer in the final, and his 5.95/247.93 took the victory over Billy's 5.97/248. Then came a stop at Dragway 42 for the ADRA's first race, the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field. Beadle qualified #6, and he lasted until the semifinal before his blower exploded on a 6.53 pass that lost to eventual winner Jim White. His best times there were 5.92/244. Raymond sure didn't have to wait long before scoring his next NHRA victory, as it came at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. He qualified #2 with a 5.92/233.76 and then set a 5.90 track record during eliminations. He beat Prudhomme in the semifinal and then went up against Frank Hawley, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" for the title. Hawley fouled, and Beadle ran 5.93/248.61 (speed was a track record) for the victory. At the IHRA Summernationals, held at Edgewater, he qualified #3, then during eliminations, he set Low ET at 5.78 but lost to Oswald in the semifinal. After running so well, the team had to be disappointed at Brainerd. Beadle "only" qualified #12 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, and he lost to Dale Pulde in the opening round. Raymond's best NHRA times of 5.750 at Indy and 257.14 at Atlanta. We formerly listed 5.735 but are removing that until we get confirmation. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984.

Notes: McEwen showed up at OCIR on March 20 with his new Duster. The paint differed from the '75 cars. He was at OCIR for its Fox Hunt race and was one of 27 drivers attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He made the show, qualifying #13, but he lost to Chris Lane in the opening round. Shortly after, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven opener. It was another sixteen-car field, and his 6.53/217.91 qualified #9. An off-pace 7.48 in the first round lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.14. In April, he was in Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. He lasted until the semi-finals before losing to Tom Hoover. Near the middle of the month, Irwindale held the Coca-Cola FC Championships. This was a big 32-car show that had all cars run two rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Tom's 6.61/177.51 in his first race beat Bill Bailey, but he shut down to an 8.86 loss to Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in his second race. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. Early in May, he was back at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. A 6.40/223 qualified #3.McEwen beat Lane in round one, but in the semi-final, his 6.50/206 fell to Jake Johnston's 6.42/223. He competed at the AHRA Okie Nationals held in Tulsa. He qualified with a 6.78, and after an easy first-round win, he ran 6.95/219.30 over Johnny White's late 6.80/206 in round two. A tire-smoking 7.78/116.12 in the semi-final lost to eventual winner Dale Emery's 6.58/211. Tom did not set the world on fire on the NHRA national event tour, although he was runner-up at Columbus and Englishtown. He ran best times in the 6.30s, hitting 230.17 at the Winters and 230.76 at the World Finals. We need to confirm where he ran 6.13/231.95. We need to verify if the photo is from 1975 or 1976.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. | After a great season in '84, Jim returned to the Funny Car wars in '85 hoping for more. He started the season by qualifying #12 with a 5.94/249.44 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he slowed to an off pace 6.25 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.80. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.23 and lasted until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.89/244.69 qualified #14 and in the first round, he had problems and shut off to a 14.60-56.13 that lost to Dale Pulde's 5.87/243. Jim was having a tough time getting past the first-round and it continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lost to Jody Smart in the first frame. On a good note, he was qualifying for all these shows, a hard thing to do. He almost didn't make the field at the NHRA Southern Nationals where his 6.02/248.89 qualified #15. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. He made up for those early losses at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge on May 26. There he qualified #13 with a 5.98/246.44. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, and in round two, Prudhomme broke on his burnout, advancing Jim into the semifinals. In his semifinal race, a 5.93/245 beat Ron Correnti, putting him in the final against Bernstein. Head would have rather raced for the win than take a solo trip, but Bernstein broke on the line and Jim soloed with a 5.93/248.48 for the victory. Things reverted back to "normal" at the next few races. His next event was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot of the sixteen-car show with a 5.98, but he lost to Pulde in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.95/234.13, but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The pattern continued at the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.83/251.53 and lost early. Jim went on to win NHRA Brainerd. His best NHRA times were 5.718/254.66 at the Keystone Nationals. Did Jim run 261 on the IHRA tour this year or was that from another year?

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Nicoll didn't have the success in '74 that he enjoyed in '73. Jim qualified #7 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.44. He beat Gordie Bonin's 6.73 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.49/225.00. He advanced past the second round when Sush Matsubara broke on the line. In the semifinal, a 6.37/230.17 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.41/230, but, unfortunately for Jim, he broke and was unable to make the final, reinstating Prudhomme. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.87 qualified #12, but an opening round 6.83/212.76 lost to Paul Smith's 6.65/221 in the "Fireball Vega." The team was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. Jim’s quick-leaving 6.71/211.76 beat Pat Foster's 6.66/215 in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn in round two. He fouled against Gene Snow in the semifinals at the AHRA Grand American held at Dragway 42 in May. Nicoll failed to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals.

Notes: Mikres was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5,46/263.77 to qualify #10. An opening round 5.64/256.70 beat Jim Murphy but a second-round 5.63/257.06 fell to Ed McCulloch's 5.38/258. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.33/273.22. His first-round win was costly as he blew his engine, but his 7.75/197.41 beat a troubled Jim Dunn. Glenn was unable to run his second-round race against Bruce Larson. Things went worse at the NHRA Supernationals, where the team failed to qualify with a 10.34/90.70 best. Gainesville was the next stop on the NHRA tour, and Mikres qualified on the "bump" with a 5.67/255.53. He faced low qualifier Jim White driving the "Hawaiian" in round one. White had a left rear slick explode that destroyed the body in their race, and Glenn advanced. A second-round 5.47/251.60 lost to Larson's 5.28/278. Glen qualified #3 at Topeka for the NHRA Heartland Nationals with a 5.260, his best NHRA ET. He fireballed an engine in the first round, while beating Freddie Neely and could not return for his second-round race against Mark Oswald. Ran his best NHRA speed at the World Finals at 274.64. Formerly listed 5.187/286.25, but the speed was from 1991, and I'm unsure about the ET. Does anybody know? Photo from 1990 Nationals.

Notes: This is my personal favorite of all the Jungle Jim cars. Built by Romeo Palamides of jet car fame in Chicago, painted by Bob Gerdes of Circus Custom Paint, then lettered by the infamous "Mr. J," it was a pretty trick piece at the time. Previously, Jungle bought cars from various builders and even built a few himself at his West Chester, Pennsylvania shop. This was Jungle's first store-bought piece in a long time, and he decided to take it out to Ontario, California, for the 1972 NHRA SuperNationals. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I do know that one pass that weekend was Jungle's personal best at the time. - Berserko Bob Doerrer | Jim ran 6.69 at OCIR and was featured in the film Funny Car Summer. He ran a confirmed 6.54/218.97 in winning the Epping Funny Car Nationals on September 10, 1972, but was that the Vega or his Camaro? | The NHRA qualifying sheets from Ontario 1972 show that Jim was the 12th alternate (no time). However, Frank Rupert was the 9th alternate at 7.143. We need to validate this 6.44/233.

Notes: Jim's 6.98 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at OCIR's second All-Pro race, but he got in after Pat Foster had problems. A first-round 6.91/186.72 lost to Jake Johnston's 6.87/215. He was awarded best engineered at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the bump at 7.154/198.42 and defeated Charlie Therwhanger in the first round with a 7.21 but lost to Jake Johnston in round two, 6.94 to 7.08. Jim ran 6.798/205.94 at the Tulsa PRA race. Set Bonneville's track record at 6.85, then reset that in the final with a win over Bob Pickett in Pete's Lil' Demon (but ET unknown). He qualified 5th at 6.464/213.27 at Ontario 1972, then ran as quick as 6.440/214.28 on his way to winning the race in an upset over Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega. These were Jim's best times of the year. Ran 6.63/213.27 at OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. Qualified at final OCIR WCS points meet with a 6.67 on the last qualifying pass. Jim qualified #7 at 6.59 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2. He beat John Lombardo in round one, 6.54 to 7.47, then took out Sush Matsubara in round two, 6.54 to 6.74. In the semis, Jim ran into eventual winner Tom McEwen, who ran an excellent 6.40 to defeat Jim's consistent 6.64. Without question, the most successful rear-engine funny in drag racing history was "Big Jim" Dunn's Cuda. This was the only one that ran a six-second time and the only one to win a national event, the 1972 NHRA Supernationals. The car featured a trick Woody Gilmore chassis with Dunn & Reath's 392 Chrysler Hemi for power. Jim and the car were the primary subject of the movie Funny Car Summer in 1972. Dunn has mentioned that this car was very difficult to drive and seldom made a complete pass. Jim's best time was an impressive 6.440 - more than half a second quicker than the next rear-engine funny car. The car was replaced by a new Satellite in 1974. It now resides in Western Canada.

Notes: Ran 5.698 at NHRA Maple Grove 9/85. | Ed ran 5.79/250 to qualify #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.94 beat Paul Smith and in round two, a 5.73/252 beat John Lombardo's 5.76/253 in the "Blue Max." He fouled against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. He did better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A second round 5.91/254 beat Billy Meyer and in the semifinals, a shut off-25.41/31 advanced when Pulde crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the final he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and won with a 5.93/253.52. McCulloch qualified #2 at Gainesville for the Gatornationals with a 5.70/250.83. A first-round 5.75/250.69 beat Oswald, but while running Pulde in the second round, he lost a blower and the race. The same thing happened at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro Am Championships. There Ed qualified #1 with a 5.73 (Low ET) at 254, but against Scott Kalitta in the first round, he lost another blower. The next stop on the NHRA trail was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals on April 21. Once again Ed qualified well with his 5.79/254.38 taking the #2 spot. Oswald got crossed up in the first round, against him and McCulloch's 5.82/255.68 advanced. In round two, a 5.87 beat John Collins and in the semifinals, Lombardo lost a rod just off the line, advancing Ed into the final. In the final he met Kenny Bernstein and despite running a good 5.81/247.25 he lost to Bernstein's better 5.69/252. At Baton Rouge for NHRA's fourth national event, the Cajun Nationals, Ed slipped to a 5.90/244.16 to qualify way back in the #10 spot. He lost to Bernstein in the first round. He qualified #9 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but lost to John Collins in the first round. The team got back into the groove in June, qualifying #3 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.77/253.52. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but a 5.88/233.57 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.79/251 in round two. At the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.75/254.66 qualified #5. He failed to reach the finals.

It probably debuted at Englishtown, where Tony qualified with a 5.429/243.27 and lost to Don Prudhomme in round one. | At the IHRA Loctite Nationwise World Nationals in Norwalk, McCallum qualified #4 for the 8 car field with a 5.568/238.73 & Faced #5 qualifier Doc Halladay in Round 1 where McCallum would lose. | Tony died in a car crash (later this year?) Notes: Low qualifier at Sonoma 1993 (setting a new track record). | Mineo, 61, and four others, including three members of his family, died in September 2006 as the result of a high-speed boating accident on a Texas lake. News accounts reported Mineo's craft collided with another boat during a 100-mph poker run. - RT | Photo from Ennis 93. - RO | Mineo started the '93 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.88/187.57 was good for the second alternate spot. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, he qualified #14 with a 5.55/253.95. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round, with an off-pace 6.14/163.01. He broke in round two, giving Jim Epler a free ride into the semifinals. Gordon qualified #6 at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals with a 5.20/257.06. A troubled 6.14/166.29 beat an equally troubled Gary Densham at 7.40/104 in round one, but in round two he lost a motor against Brent Fanning and the resulting fire destroyed the Firebird body. He was OK. He had a new body installed in time for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.28/282.04 qualified #7. In the first round, Paul Smith fouled against him and Mineo advanced with a 5.68/222.99. He lost to Freddie Neely in round two.

Notes: Gordon was at Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5.44/272.72 to qualify #15. He lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Mineo skipped the second NHRA event of the season, the Arizona Nationals, but he was back on tour at Houston for the Supernationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.31/282.57 and a first-round 5.33/276.92, taking out Gary Clapshaw's 5.37/267. In the second round, a 5.37/248.41 advanced over Jerry Caminito. In the semifinal, his 5.34/250.20 beat Tom Hoover's off pace 5.78/183. In the final, he faced another first-time finalist in Cruz Pedregon. Unfortunately, Gordon had problems and shut off to a 17.43/54.59 loss to Pedregon's 5.14/284. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals on March 22. A 5.38/283.37 qualified #10, but Mark Oswald's 5.24/283 in the first round beat his 5.40/252.52. Atlanta was the next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, Gordon had little trouble qualifying, running a 5.31/246.64 for the #7 spot. In the first round, his 5.42/209.71 fell to Paul Smith's 5.33/236. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Mineo opened some eyes when he qualified #3 with a 5.31/283.55 (Top Speed). He improved to a Low ET of the meet 5.24 at 259.59 in the first round while beating Gary Litton. In the second round, he slowed to a 5.46/266.19 that lost to John Force's 5.43/271. He qualified #5 with a 5.32/280.46 at the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.43/268.97 got past Gary Bolger in the first round, but in round two, he fouled away a 5.48/272.31 against Hofmann's 5.31/274. Mineo did not follow the tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for NHRA's ninth race of the season, the Summernationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.25/284.36 and a first-round 5.34/262.31 beat Caminito, but he was again stopped in round two. This time Chuck Etchells got him with a 5.25/277 beating Mineo's 5.44/236.65. Gordon had a great year with 5.20s at 280 plus at many events, including best times of 5.172 at the Finals and 285.35 at Indy. He was runner up at the 1992 Houston Supernationals and the low qualifier at Sonoma in 1992.

Notes: The "Hawaiian" did not have a perfect season performance-wise early in '75. Wilcox started the season at the New Year's Day race at Fremont. He failed to make the final but had an interesting first-round race with Don Prudhomme when both smoked the tires. Don won with a 7.41 to Norm's 7.59. At the Irwindale Grand Premiere, he qualified #11 in the sixteen-car field but broke on the line in the first round, giving Bob Pickett the win. Norm failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with best times of 6.77/178.21. At the Irwindale Funny Car Championships, Wilcox won his first-round race easily, and in round two of the 32 car show, his 6.76 beat Bob Pickett in the "Lil' Demon." He lost to Gary Burgin in round three when he shut down with problems. The team ventured to Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grandnationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and Wilcox qualified in the bottom half of the field (#11), but once eliminations started, they did alright. Norm's 7.08 in the first round beat Vic Cecelia's 7.97. In the second round, a 7.12 advanced over a troubled John Luna at 19.29, but he lost to eventual winner “Jungle Jim" Liberman in the semifinals. Tri-City Dragway held its seventh annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships, and the "Hawaiian" was there. All eight cars were to make three runs. It was not a good day for Norm. An off-pace 7.97 in his first race lost to Vic Cecelia’s 6.96. In round two, he blew the tires off of it in a loss to Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse," and he lost to Denny Savage, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," when he smoked the tires once again. Shortly after that, the team was at Martin, Michigan, for an eight-car show. Eventual winner Jim Nicoll beat Wilcox in the first round when the "Hawaiian" got out of shape, and Norm clicked it off to a 9.40-73.40. The next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where Norm qualified #8 in the sixteen-car show and lasted until round two before losing to Tom Hoover's 6.56/199 with a 6.62/208. The team ran 6.58/208.33 bests there. In July, the team was also at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals, but Norm failed to reach the finals. Late in July, things started to improve. They were at Portland for the big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. Wilcox ran a great 6.35/213 in his opening race over Roger Lindamood's 6.91. This was a race where all cars ran three races, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. His ET got him into the final against Jerry Ruth, but those gremlins crept in - the Monza broke on the line giving Ruth a single for the win. The Funny Car Spectacular followed up that race in Edmonton, Alberta. Once again, all cars made three runs. Norm beat Twig Zeigler in his first race before the car failed to start for his match with Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in round two. But he was able to come back and win his third race over a tire-smoking Terry Capp. The team reverted to the wrong direction in performance at the Seafair Funny Car Championships in Seattle. It was a 32-car field with the two Low ET cars from three rounds of racing meeting in the final. The "Hawaiian" went up in smoke in its first race while losing to Zeigler, and in round two, the car broke on the line against John Collins. An 11:00 pm curfew kept the team from running a third race. We needless to say, Wilcox failed to make the final. It was disappointing to many to see Norm's name among the non-qualifiers at the PHR Championships, but the car just wasn't running as it should have been. Just how far off the team was shown at the IHRA Nationals run at Dragway 42 in West Salem in mid-August. It was a sixteen-car field, and Norm qualified #13. But sitting ahead of him were some surprising names: Donny Plunkett, Rodger Hamrick, and Jackie Price, just to name a few. Not to take anything away from these guys, but their budget was next to nothing compared to that of car owner Roland Leong. Norm lost in round one to Dale Pulde. The following week (August 24), Wilcox finished runner-up to Gene Snow at the IHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis. At the NHRA US Nationals, Norm's 6.429/226.70 qualified on the "bump." He ran a nice 6.279/218.44 to upset Gary Cochran's 6.95/216 in round one, but he fell off to an 11-second run in round two that lost to Bob Pickett's 6.39/229. However, the team got it figured out by the World Finals in Ontario. Wilcox was the number two qualifier at 6.179/232.55, right after Don Prudhomme's 6.15/241.53. He improved to a sterling 6.164/218.97 to defeat Jake Johnston's 6.31/220 in the first round. Unfortunately, the team did not show for round two [I think having suffered a horrendous fire - BP], sending Denny Savage and the Chi-Town team on to an eventual final round finish.

Notes: Raymond Beadle was having a tough time at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It took him three passes to qualify, and his 6.321/242.58 got him the #13 spot. In the first round, he smoked the tires to an 8.07 and lost to John Force. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.91/244.56. He improved to a 5.89/246.57 over Tom McEwen in the first round. In round two, his 6.19/213.77 lost to Frank Hawley's 5.93/241 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The following week, he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.43/215.82. Beadle beat Billy Meyer and Gary Burgin to gain a final round berth against Kenny Bernstein. In the final, his 6.39/215.97 finished runner-up to Bernstein's 6.21/227. Atlanta held an eight-car show near the end of March, and, unfortunately, Raymond failed to qualify for the show. He was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17. It was another eight-car field, and once again, he failed to qualify with a 6.31 best. Things went better a week later (April 24) at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Beadle qualified #2 with a 5.99 behind Dale Pulde's 5.98 (Low ET). The two worked their way into the final, where Pulde's 6.11 got the victory over the "Blue Max's" 6.20. Raymond got another runner-up finish at the next IHRA event, the World Nationals at Norwalk, where Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car stopped him in the final. Beadle also failed to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 6.13/241.93 was far short of the 6.08 it took to make the eight-car field. Oswald got him again at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Beadle qualified #3, and a solo 6.65/187.89 made it past a broken Al Segrini in round one, but he lost to Oswald in the semifinals. Beadle won his 11th NHRA National event when he won the Springnationals at Columbus. He had set Low ET and a track record 5.88 at 238.64 in qualifying #1 for the field. He then ran 5.97/235.60 over Ken Veney and 6.28/180.36 over a broken Segrini. His opponent, Gary Burgin, smoked the tires in the semifinals, and Raymond's 6.10/228.42 advanced. Once again, he faced Oswald for the title, and his 6.95/238.09 got him the victory over Mark's 6.27/235. He then won the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan, beating Bernstein in the final. He set Top Speed with his 251.39 pass. The following week (July 17) found the "Blue Max" team at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Beadle qualified #6 with a 5.95/233.76. A quick-leaving 6.14/236.84 beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.10/238 in the opening round, but in round two, the car ruptured an oil pan while staging against Don Prudhomme. The next NHRA race was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. It was an eight-car show, and Beadle's 6.08/238.09 qualified #4. Both he and Force ran 6.22 (Raymond at 239.38) in their first-round race, but Force got to the other end first. Beadle did not race at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, as he chose to race at Spokane instead for the AHRA World Finals that was run the same weekend. It was just an eight-car field, and he qualified #2 behind Force. The two of them would make their way into the final. An easy 6.26/238.72 in the opening round defeated a tire-smoking Gary Densham, and in the semifinal, Raymond's 5.92/241.93 beat Tom McEwen, who also smoked the tires. It looked like Force would that an easy win in the final as he had run 5.79 twice during eliminations. But Beadle picked up to a 5.78/247.93 to win the race over Force's 5.91/220. It had to be upsetting for the "Blue Max" team to be watching the Big Bud Shootout at Indy on September 4 and not being a part of the show. The exclusive eight-car show was held during qualifying and only the top eight qualifiers from the past year ran. But the next day, Beadle's team showed them what they could do. A 5.83/251.39 qualified #3, and Beadle set Low ET in the opening round with his 5.804 at a booming 254.95 that beat Paul Gordon. In round two, his 5.91/245.23 beat Hawley's 6.02/235. But his quicker 5.87/247.93 lost to eventual winner Bernstein's 5.90/254 in the semifinal. The next weekend (September 11), the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. Beadle ran 5.89/250 to qualify low for the eight-car field, and he lasted until the semifinal before Oswald's 5.83/253 put his 5.84/252 on the trailer in a close race. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Fallnationals. Beadle ran well again, running 5.84/252.10 to qualify #2 behind Oswald's 5.74/253. This was a critical race for the "Max." Going into this race, Beadle led the IHRA Funny Car points chase by 54 points over Oswald. They both survived their first-round races, but Beadle smoked the tires in the semifinal and lost to Dale Pulde. Oswald went on to win the race and the IHRA Funny Car points Championship. Even with the loss, the "Blue Max" was running some numbers; 5.7's were becoming more and more frequent as well as 250 mph runs. Case in point, at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 2, Beadle's 5.779/251.39 claimed the pole for the eight-car field. He got lucky in the opening round when his crossed-up 6.31/240.64 advanced over Bernstein's troubled 13.13. In the semifinal, he was back on pace with a 5.767/249.30 that defeated Hawley's 5.95/220. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Billy's 5.757/245 get the victory over Raymond's 5.78/246.57. Raymond became the 7th member of the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car with a 251.39 pass on July 10, 1983, at IHRA Milan, Michigan.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Beadle qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.58/259.51. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 12.44 while his opponent, Graeme Cowin advanced with a 5.74/261. | March 6/8, Raymond would compete at the Coca Cola Funny Car Classic at Ennis where he would qualify #1 with a 5.514/254.0. In round 1 on a Single he ran 5.510/263.92. In the Semis Beadle got another single as Henry Phillips had to put a replacement body on the chassis after disintegrating the original body, however Henry's team felt the body was "inadequate to deal with potential 5.60/240 runs." & thus, didn't run against Beadle & Beadle ran 5.86/256.84 in the solo. He would race Steve Hodkinson in the final where Beadle would win with a 5.63/256.19. | On March 15 he was at Atlanta or a six-car show. He qualified #5 with a 6.22/240.00 and another 6.22 in the first round, loss to Jim Head's 5.94. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.64/256.62 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he lost when he smoked the tires against Head in the first round. Beadle lent the "Blue Max" to Tom McEwen to drive at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. McEwen did pretty well with it finishing runner-up to Kenny Bernstein. Back at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, it was a light field, and Raymond's 6.17/242.71 qualified #14 for the show. He lost to Texas neighbor, Billy Meyer's 5.71/254 in the first round, with a 6.21/215.31. Beadle qualified #15 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with an 8.95/170.13 as only sixteen-cars showed. He ran 8.74/97.79 to advance past the first-round when Mike Dunn failed to show. In the second round, Beadle smoked the tires to a 6.10/250, but it was still enough to get past Henry Phillips. He smoked the tires again in the semifinals, but this time he lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 5.57/261. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, Beadle ran 5.91/241.15 to qualify #11, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The "Blue Max" team did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were there at Englishtown for the Summernationals. Raymond qualified #13 with a 5.81/248.61. Another 5.81 at 248.68 in round one, lost to John Force's quick-leaving 5.85/252.

Notes: Pulde always ran well at Pomona and continued to do so at the '86 NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.848/250.69 and improved to a 5.691/250.00 in the first round while beating Ed McCulloch's 5.827/240.64. A 5.777/244.56 advanced into the semifinals when Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian" for the first time, crossed the center line and ran 6.313/159.85. Dale smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 13.096/61.09 loss to John Force's 5.756/255.68. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.794/255.97 qualified #4. Rain came and postponed the race from March 16 to the 23rd, but Pulde was scheduled to run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and left Gainesville to run the IHRA event. He was probably happy that he did as he won the race. He qualified #2 and made his way to the final against Paul Smith, whom he beat with a 5.68/254.23 (Low ET and Top Speed). Dale was the number one qualifier at ADRA Spokane 8/86 at 5.747/257.14. At the NHRA Winston Finals with the RATT War Eagle, Pulde Qualified #9 with a 5.737/260.56. Pulde would face #1 Qualifier Johnny West in Round 1, running 5.809/250.62 to defeat West's 5.909/248.89. Pulde faced #13 Qualifier Jim Head in round 2, where Pulde won with a 5.868/248.27 while Head drifted toward the retaining wall and lost at 7.676/106.87. In the semis, Pulde faced #7 qualifier Billy Meyer, where Pulde Smoked the tires & watched the eventual runner-up Meyer streak away to the win at 5/712/246.71 as Dale's 10.096/76.69 followed. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Finished #3 in NHRA points in '85. - Mark York

Notes: Sold the Mustang to the Suffolk Dragway owner, who later sold it to Butch Kernodle. The Barracuda was built by Don Hardy in late 1968 for Larry Reyes. Larry ran it a few times prior to signing on to drive Roland Leong's Hawaiian. He sold the car to Paula. This photo is from Tulsa - I think there are some pictures somewhere on the internet from the '68 OCIR manufacturer's meet with Larry's name still on the car. Same paint, just different lettering. | Paula debuted the 'Cuda on May 25 at Suffolk for a match race against Lee Jones. She won two out of three races to win the match with a best of 8.03/182.92. Paula raced at the New England Funny Car Championships at Epping on June 8, but she broke against Lew Arrington in the first round. Paula raced probably the hottest car on the match race circuit, Tommy Grove, on June 22 at Kingston for a best of three match and she won. She beat Grove 2 out of three to win the match. On July 4 Paula ran 194.36 at Union Grove and shortly after this she ran 197.36 at Martin, Mich. At the PHR Championships on August 2, Della Woods' 8.08/179 beat Paula's 8.11/188.67 in the first round. Paula took a big win at the New Jersey State Championships at Atco on August 10. The two women met again in the first round, but this time, they finished in reverse order with Murphy's 7.86/192 beating Della Woods' 8.50/174. A 7.95/195.65 beat Bruce Bohen's Buick at 8.59/160 in the semifinal. And in the final, a 7.74/190 beat a motor blowing Ken Poffenberger. On August 24 at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA World Championships, Paula became the first woman drag racer to break 200 mph. She ran a 7.55/200.00 in time trials. She also made it into the semifinals there before blowing an engine and losing to Dick Harrell. At Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals on October 19, she lost to Mart Higginbotham in the first round. Another first-round loss came on October 25 at the Lions East/West meet when Johnny Wright's 7.33/198 defeated her 8.20/191.89. Paula ran well at the Sears Point North/South Championships on November 2, running as quick as 7.91/192.30 over Bob Velseka's Mustang. She failed to make the finals, however. On November 7, a 7.62 qualified her fourth on the Chrysler team for the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. The 'Cuda was used early into the '70 season.

Notes: Won three straight weekends at Lions and set a track record at 6.63. This car didn't get the recognition it deserved, beating a lot of the "name" drivers at the time. Stan ran at Irwindale's New Year's Day Funny Car Festival to start the season. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 7.28. In the first round, he beat Mert Littlefield with a 7.54/189.06. In round two, he got past a motor blowing Ron O'Donnell and in the semifinals, he beat Gene Conway, but blew his engine doing it and was unable to make the final. He was at OCIR for the first All-Pro event where he beat Conway in the first round, with a 7.10/204.54. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Dunn in the semifinals. Lions hosted the AHRA Grand American on January 10 and Shiroma made it to the final. He ran a 7.71 over Dick Harrell's Vega and a 7.12 beat Larry Arnold in round two. A semifinal 7.55 beat a tire-smoking Dunn and advanced him into the final against Gene Snow. The 'Cuda lost fire on the line and Snow singled for the win. At Pomona for the Winternationals. Stan qualified #6 with a 7.17. In the first round, he advanced with a 7.19/205.47 when Don Prudhomme broke. He lost in round two when the 'Cuda failed to fire advancing Snow. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lost in the second round to Dunn. Still, in March, he raced at an eight-car show at OCIR. He lost to John Lombardo in the first round. On March 20 he was at Irwindale for the "Potpourri" race. He set Low ET at 7.17, but failed to make the finals. He was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race on March 27. He ran a strong 6.95/211.76 over Conway in round one, but in round two he lost to Dave Beebe. The "Skulker" caught fire on the run, but Stan was OK. He was back in business in April at an eight-car show at Lions. A first-round 7.05/189.47 beat Wendell Shipman and in the semifinals, a good 7.00/208.33 lost to Dunn's better 6.92/194. At the OCIR "Hang Ten" Funny Car race, Stan ran a 7.11/189.87 in the first round, over Densham's 7.24. In round two a 6.94/213.27 beat Bob Hawkins, but he lost to Rich Siroonian in the semifinals.
