Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1993 US Nats (Big Bud Shootout), Indy. Qualified 13th at 5.29/280.72 for Monday eliminations. Improved to 5.24/281.60, but lost to Al Hofmann in round one. (Qualified on the bump 8th spot in the Big Bud Shootout. Lost to John Force in round one). | Bazemore first drove for Johnny West on July 10 at the Parts Plus Nationals at US 131 Martin, Michigan. Four Funny Cars ran at the meet and Whit was declared the overall winner when he beat Jerry Caminito with a 5.65 and Gary Bolger with a 5.61 at a track speed record of 264.90. His next outing was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 5.77/247.38 qualified #14, but a first-round 5.86/195.99 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.69/248. NHRA's next stop was at Sonoma for the California Nationals. There a 5.51/269.54 qualified #13. Whit lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Bazemore qualified #10 at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 5.27/284.09. A first-round 5.28/285.17 failed to get past Gordie Bonin's 5.24/281. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen spots available so qualifying was not a problem. Still, Whit ran 5.61/266.98 to qualify #12. A first-round 5.53/270.83 beat Hoover's 5.63/203. In the second round, Bazemore showed his driving skills when his 5.31/275.22 beat Hofmann's quicker and faster 5.26/280. His run came to an end in the semifinals where he lost to Cruz Pedregon.

Notes: Dennis was from Alaska, but the car was housed in Phoenix. Tripp's '76 season consisted of 65 races. The car averaged 6.61 in 125 passes and won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade title. In the sixteen race series, he won three races and was runner-up eight times. The best NHRA national event times were 6.137/228.42 at the Pomona Winters. | Saw this car at the 1976 SIR 64 Funny Car event, completed in the overcast daytime in a rush. It was my last chance to see some early 70s type FCs (Halibrands in front, 6.71s, steel motors.) The CC Cavalcade ran their own bracket, Shumake over Custy. - Joe Moore

Notes: Jim was the first alternate at NHRA Pomona with a 6.39 (no speed reported). He ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet. After an easy first-round win, he ran 6.40/224.32 in round two over low qualifier Dave Condit who got out of shape and shut off. Unfortunately, the car broke against eventual winner Simon Menzies in the semi-final. At OCIR's 12 annual Nitro Championships in July, Jim qualified #1 with a 6.22. He went to the final, beating Pat Foster when both had sub-par runs, but Dunn won. Jim's next national event was Seattle, where he had a great race. He qualified #4 at 6.10/236.84. In round one, he beat Kenny Bernstein with another 6.100/238.98 to 6.24/238.09. Round two saw Jim take a 6.14/232.55 decision over Tom Ridings at 6.49/184. He upset Don Prudhomme in the semis, 6.17/223.32 to 6.26/223. Jim shut off to a troubled 12.11/64 in the final, giving the win to Raymond Beadle at 6.22/230. Jim was the 7th alternate at Ontario (times not reported). Photo from Indy 1980. | At a June '79 SIR 16-car AA-BB/FC match race, John Force beat Jim Dunn with a 6.40/216 to Dunn's quicker 6.36/222. Notes: The Snake's first funny car. Ron Scrima exhibition Engineering chassis, Keith Black 426 with a B&M TorqueFlite. Jay Howell drove this car at '70 Indy Nationals, qualifying with a 6.99 while Prudhomme was running and winning Top Fuel Eliminator. Prudhomme also ran 6.94 at Union Grove, and 7.07 at 212.26. | exhibition Engineering built the 118" chassis and Keith Black built the 1,800 hp 426 Hemi. The Fiberglass body was a product of Fiberglass Ltd. It used an Engle cam and M/T rods with Forgedtrue pistons. A B&M modified TorqueFlite delivered the power to the rear wheels. Don debuted this car at Beeline on January 25 for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.68 lost to Larry Reyes' 7.57 in the "Hawaiian." He failed to qualify the 'Cuda at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, so he concentrated on his Top Fuel effort instead. On February 14, he was at Lions for an eight-car show that saw 30 cars attempt to qualify. Prudhomme qualified #1 with a 7.23/206. He set Low ET and Top Speed (both track records) in the first round, with a 7.18/208.81 that beat Rich Siroonian's 7.55/171 in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. In the semifinals, he faced the "Mongoose" Tom McEwen and his 7.20/207.36 moved into the final over Tom's out of shape shut off run. In the final, it was the "Snake" who had problems and shut down to a 12.74/53 mph run that finished runner-up to Pat Minick's 7.19/204 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." A week later (February 22), he was at OCIR for the third All-Pro event. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 7.30/206.89 (Top Speed). A first-round 8.51/114.94 advanced when Charlie Allen fouled, but, in the semifinals, Gene Conway stepped up to a best-ever 7.27/201 to beat Don's 7.50/194.38. In early March, he was back at Lions for the second AHRA Grand American race. This was the race where Don Garlits lost part of his foot when his clutch exploded in the Top Fuel final. The accident damaged the Christmas tree and the Funny Car final had to be flag started. Prudhomme was in that final, facing Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. Danny got the victory with a 7.25/201 over Don's 7.41/204. His next appearance in the Funny Car was at a best of three match race against Tommy Grove at Capitol on April 11. Grove won the first race with a holeshot 7.50/193 over Don's quicker 7.35/202.24. Prudhomme came back to win the match by winning the last two races with times of 8.25/190.66 over Grove's out of shape 8.53/167, and 7.64/193.96 when Tom's transmission let go on the line. He was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships where in the first round, both he and Malcolm Durham ran 7.65 with Durham getting the win. Prudhomme got back into the show on the "break rule" and advanced past round two when Ron Umbach fouled against him. In the semifinals, his 7.86 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 7.16. At the fourth AHRA Grand American race at Frontier International Raceway, he finally got a victory. His times were not that impressive with a 7.80/187.50 winning in his first-round race and in round two he actually lost with his 7.84/181.08 falling to Howell's 7.69/185. But he got back in on the "break rule" and faced Howell again in the semifinals. This time Jay lost a transmission in his Mustang and Don advanced into the final with a 10.36. His final round foe was Snow and Gene fouled giving Prudhomme the win. ET from (11/70 Popular Hot Rodding) MPH from Union Grove WI (8/01/70 Drag News)

Notes: This is the car that Don began the 1970 season with, it was replaced in August by the Buttera built Cuda that won Indy. - TN | Schumacher had his new 'Cuda at Fremont's New Year's Day Championships. Things didn't go so well as in his first-round race against Dick Bourgeois he broke a rear end and was done for the rest of the day. On Jan 4 he was at the first OCIR All-Pro race. He ran two cars at the meet, his old 'Cuda with Arnie Behling driving, and his new car driven by himself. The new car failed to qualify, but eighth qualifier Gas Ronda had blown a transmission and was unable to run so Don replaced him in the show. Unfortunately, in the first round, he broke a driveshaft and lost to Charlie Allen. The Behling driven car lasted until the semifinals, but did set Low ET at 7.43. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals on January 25, Don qualified with a 7.64. He beat Tom Prock's 7.72 in the first round, with a 7.70, but in round two, a transmission let go and Jake Johnston in the "Blue Max" advanced. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but due to a tricky track surface, he failed to qualify even though the "bump" was only a 7.74.

Notes: After Ford pulled the plug on its racing support early in '70, the Ford racers were forced to "go it alone" for the season. Up until the axing of its racing operations, Ford was still doing well in drag racing. But this was a severe blow as Ford had asked Kalitta to sort out its Boss 429 for fuel racing. The car was not responding well with the 429, and at numerous races, he reverted to the 427 SOHC to stay competitive. Parts for that engine were now scarce, so after Ford bailed, he switched to a 426 Hemi to power his TF dragster and the Mustang FC. In one of its earliest outings with the Hemi, Kalitta was at New York National Speedway in mid-May for its Springnationals. His 8.59 beat Arnold Arnold in the "Super Cuda," which had transmission trouble in the first round. Rain disrupted the race, and in between, they kept trying to run it until finally completing it on Sunday, May 24. Conrad did not reach the final; he had transmission problems himself, and his best pass was 7.92/179.09. Maple Grove held a sixteen-car show on Wednesday, August 12. Kalitta lost to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein in the second round. Conrad was at Tri-City in September for an eight-car show. He soloed in the first round with an 8.12/123.62 when the "Hawaiian" broke on the line. In the semifinals, his 7.43/173.74 beat Roger Lindamood. In the final, he faced Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Pat got the win when Kalitta lost a clutch to the line. We need confirmation of the listed 6.93. (See the other entry for the Boss 429 times).

Notes: The "Hawaiian" qualified #9 at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, which meant that Colson had to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the opening round. Don's 6.23 put Ron's 6.32 on the trailer. The team was really running well at Sacramento for the Governor's Cup Championships. Colson ran a 6.16 on his way to a final-round meeting with Gordie Bonin. In the final, he improved to 6.14/226 to win over Bonin's 6.20. In Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, Ron's 6.18/225.56 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme. An opening round 6.24 beat Bonin, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.66 in a loss to Ed McCulloch. The best NHRA national event times were the 6.184 at Ontario and 230.17 at Seattle (plus a nice 6.191 at Indy). South Chicago Auto Parts sponsored.

Notes: The car had that wild "shovel" nose on it, also ran it in '86. This car is the one Billy used 3 spark plugs per cylinder on until outlawed by NHRA. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway in January, Meyer had his supercharger explode on a 5.84/218.44 qualifier. The brand-new Mustang body was blown to pieces, and he received slight burns to his forehead. He was done for the day. Billy started the '85 NHRA season by qualifying #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with final attempt, 6.03/239.36. Billy lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. He destroyed another Mustang body at Atlanta on March 10. He was there for an eight-car show where he qualified #8 with a 6.42/223.88. In the first round, he beat a tire-smoking Pulde with a 5.82/240.00, but in the lights, the blower exploded and took the Mustang body with it. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Billy lasted until round two where Ed McCulloch's 5.91/254 beat his 5.97/243. A best of 5.93/229.00 failed to qualify at the Gatornationals, but he rebounded with a runner-up finish at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. In the semifinal, he stopped Kenny Bernstein's 5.95/243 with a 5.88/250. In the final, he faced Pulde, and they both ran 5.80 (Billy at Top Speed of the meet, 261.62), but Dale got the win. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he qualified #8 with a 5.93/208.04. A 5.99/250.00 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/224. In round two, he got out of shape and shut off in a loss to John Lombardo's 5.91/246 in the "Blue Max.” Meyer lost early at the next NHRA race as well, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3 with a 5.84/247.38, but in the first round, he crossed the centerline while racing Ron Correnti. Things weren't much better at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Billy made another final round appearance at the NHRA Springnationals in June. He qualified #6 with a 5.83/236.22 and beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.89/231.60. A second-round 5.81/242.06 beat a tire-smoking John Force and in the semifinals, a 5.82/241.54 beat John Collins' 5.94/244. In the final, Bernstein's 5.81/251 beat Meyer tire-smoking run. Only 15 cars showed up for the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but Billy still ran hard in qualifying running a 5.704/256.70 for the #2 spot. He smoked the tires hard in the first round, with a 6.05/254.09, but still beat Head, who blew an engine. He lost to eventual winner Rick Johnson driving the "Hawaiian" in round two. He was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he lasted until the semifinals. After that, he made the trip to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.80, but he lost to Tim Grose in the opening round. It was then off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Meyer's 5.96 at only 205.94 qualified #7. He beat Cal Jackson in the first round, with a 6.59/153.73 before losing to John Force's 5.95/243 with a 5.99/222.77 in the next round. He then went to Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Billy qualified #4 and ran 5.806/250.00 and 5.889/245.23 to reach the semifinals where he lost to Pulde.

Notes: Number four qualifier at the 1978 Winters at 6.224/234.98. | As mentioned, he qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.39/229 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." But in the second round, both he and Tom Prock smoked the tires with Prock's 7.36/217 beating his 7.30/222 to the stripe. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He had won the race in '77 and was hoping to repeat—a 6.30/238.72 qualified #4. In the first round, his 6.43/233.76 beat Prock's 6.46/226. He got no time slip in round two but still won his race against Shirl Greer. His speed on that pass was 234.37. The car failed to fire for his semifinal race against Billy Meyer. It was later diagnosed to a broken lead from the magneto. He was at Bakersfield for the March Meet, where his first-round 6.29/229.00 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.37/232. On April 8th, he was at Seattle for its Funny Car Opener. But once again, he lost in the opening round. This time, his 6.75/222.22 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.41/214. The NHRA Division Six Opener was held in Seattle on May 7. Bonin qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.19/234.98. That was impressive, considering that he out-qualified Don Prudhomme, Tom McEwen, McCulloch, and others. In round one, his 6.44/231.95 beat Jim Dunn's troubled 11.31. But in the semifinal, his 6.41/230.76 lost to McEwen's 6.22/216. Firebird Raceway hosted the next NHRA Division Six race on May 21. Once again, Bonin qualified well, running 6.46 to get the #2 position behind Prudhomme's 6.24. But an off-pace 6.61/223.24 in the first round, lost to Twig Zeigler's 6.48/214. Shortly after that, he was at Edmonton International for its season opener. Eight cars ran two rounds of racing that had the two Low ET cars come back and race for the title. Gordie's 6.56/219.51 over Zeigler held for a final round birth. He faced McCulloch, whose 6.62 was the second-lowest time. The final was close, but McCulloch's 6.54/220 got the victory over Bonin's 6.60/214.28. In June, Bonin was at Cayuga for a best of three match race against Prudhomme. Being on his home turf didn't seem to help as he lost all three races to the "Snake." Don ran 6.3's on every pass while Gordie's best was 6.55/227.84. The other two runs were 6.86/161.29 and 6.84/218.97. He ran much better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.29/233.76 qualified #10. But a first-round 6.49/223.32 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.31/216. He was runner-up to John Lombardo at the OCIR Nitro Championships on July 1st, and a week later (July 9), he won the fourth NHRA Division Six race held at Woodburn. There he qualified #1 with a 6.45. An easy 6.73/229.00 beat alternate Paul Luppy in round one, was followed by a 6.43/231.36 in the semifinal that beat Mike Miller's 6.65/213. He set Low ET and a Top Speed in the final with a 6.40/231.95 that beat Nick Harmon. He barely made the field at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 6.30/234.37 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, Gary Burgin slowed to 6.40/231, and Bonin's 6.29/236.22 slipped past. But despite running his best time of the weekend, a 6.18/238.72 in round two, he lost to Lombardo's 6.12/236. Portland held its big 32 car show in August. All cars were to make two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Bonin made a good account of himself, running 6.36 and 6.32 (both at 231)to beat Bryan Raines and Jim Moore. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. He did not race at the NHRA Grandnationals. Bonin qualified #15 at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.24/235.60. A quick-leaving 6.28/234.37 beat John Force's 6.22/227 in the opening round, and in round two, opponent Billy Meyer lost a blower on the line, and Bonin's 6.41/233.16 advanced. He was stopped by Tom McEwen's 6.22/234 in the semifinals that beat his 6.29/236.22.

Notes: Is the photo from '75 or '76? - JB | Tom ran really well in his Duster in '75, especially on the AHRA Grand American Series. It didn't start so well when he failed to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but at Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 6.32 to qualify #5. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 6.61/206.89 over Ed's 6.72/197. He lost to Bill Leavitt in the second round. At the Bakersfield March Meet on March second, only 12 Funny Car's showed. Tom qualified #9 with a 6.46/203.16. He fell off to a 6.88 at 164.23 in the first round, and lost to McCulloch. Tom went to OCIR for the AHRA Grand American in March. He ran 6.57 (Low ET) to qualify first. In the first round, a 6.62/216.86 beat Roger Garten in the "Warhorse" Mustang. In the semifinals, he beat Neil Leffler with a 6.58/210.77. The final saw him facing Jake Johnston in the "Pisano & Matsubara" car. It was a close race, but Tom's 6.77/213.27 won over Jake's 6.78/220. He did not enter the NHRA Gatornationals as it was run on the same weekend as the AHRA race. McEwen was at Irwindale in April for the National Funny Car Championships. He beat Gary Southern in the first round, but then failed to appear for his second-round call and was replaced by Southern. In May, McEwen was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #8 in the sixteen-car show. He and his opponent, Tripp Shumake, smoked the tires in the first round, but Tom's 6.98 came out on top. In the second round, his 6.84/199.11 lost to Dick Custy's 6.74. The AHRA Springnationals was held at St. Louis, and Tom was there running 6.60/201.35 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. A 6.55/203.16 qualified #10 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. In the first round, he went into heavy tire smoke and lost to McCulloch. Tom was the second alternate at Ontario on 10/12/75 at 6.406/230.76. Ran 6.365 205.47 at the US 131 PHR Championships. ET from Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/01/75

Notes: Talk about a bad way to start your new year. John was in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. On Friday the 13th, he crashed his Camaro into the guardrail during qualifying. He was OK, but the car was not as he failed to qualify. The damage was not too bad as he had the car running at Firebird Raceway at the end of the month for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He didn't reach the finals there, but he ran well enough to beat the "Hawaiian" with Mike Dunn onboard. He was one of four cars running at Sacramento's East-West meet, where he was declared the winner after beating Gary Densham, who had his reverser explode in the final. At Pomona, his 5.92/249.30 qualified #9. He and Kenny Bernstein had a close first-round race that saw Force's 5.89/247.93 come out on top over Kenny's 5.90/251. He got to solo in round two when Don Prudhomme shut off with problems. John advanced with a 5.92/249.30. In the semi-finals, he lost a tire-smoking dual with Al Segrini. He stopped at Carlsbad and drove the "L.A. Hooker" in an eight-car show but lost to Bryan Ranes in the opening round. The week before Gainesville, he was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. His 6.19/239.36 qualified #6. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.54 in a loss to Segrini's 5.88. He qualified #9 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.89/247.93. Once again, the car went up in smoke, but his 6.55/245.90 still beat Tim Grose, who blew an engine at 6.79/142. In round two, he lost to John Collins. The following week (March 25), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Qualifying wasn't a problem as only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Still, Force ran 5.95 for the #5 spot in the field. In round one, a 5.96/242.55 beat Jim Head, but a 6.00/241 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.93/241 in round two. Things did not go too well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Force failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. In the first week of May, he was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coors 32 car show. Denny Savage was supposed to run John in the final but he had hurt his engine and Gary Thompson took his place. It didn't make a difference to Force, who had set Low ET at 5.98 and then ran 6.07 for the victory. He then won the Bakersfield March Meet that was now held in May. He "only" qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 5.98, but he beat low qualifier Ed McCulloch in the first round with a 5.95/245. He smoked the tires in the final, but his 6.49/239 held up to win over a crossed-up Tom McEwen. John also ran 5.80 at ADRA Eunice LA in 9/84, 5.92/245.90 at Gary US 30, and 5.94/252.80 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. Photo from Indy 1984. | Ran 5.76 over Jim Dunn's 6.02 at a Carlsbad match race in May 1984. Frazier and Force were surprising non-qualifiers at Indy, running 5.958/249.30 against a 5.939 bump spot. - Joe Moore

Notes: The British import had a very creditable 1992 NHRA season, qualifying almost everywhere and running strong DNQ efforts when he didn't make the fields. His 5.414 on the bump spot at Ennis 1992 made it the second-quickest Funny Car field in history. He ran a ridiculously quick 5.17 at Topeka. Norm qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 5.82/223.21. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.58/251.67 lost to John Force's 5.31/278. Shortly after that, he was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 5.63/243.96 qualified #11. Unfortunately, he lost to Tom Hoover in the first round.

Notes: Gary started the year with a runner-up finish to Tommy Ivo at the Sacramento New Year's Day race. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.348/231.36 qualified ninth. In the first round, he beat low qualifier Tripp Shumake with a 6.33/212 over Shumake's 6.59/218 in Johnny Loper's Arrow. Unfortunately, he fouled against Tom McEwen in round two. He made a stop at Englishtown for its Funny Car Season Opener. It was an eight-car show, and Gary ran 6.61/191.89 to beat Dodger Glenn's 8.00 in the "Frantic Ford." In the semifinals, his 6.69/212.76 easily beat Tim Kushi, who shut off early. He faced Roy Harris in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Roy's 6.46 win over Gary's 6.48. At the Gatornationals, a 6.32/234.37 qualified #5. He beat George Johnson in the first round, with a 6.42/222.22, But again he lost in the second round. This time, a 6.71/201.34 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.42/232. He was at Maple Grove for the Spring All-Pro Funny Car Championships in April. It was an eight-car show, and Gary's 6.52/201.79 beat Bill Leavitt's 6.59/196 in the first round. In the semifinals, his 6.48/201.79 (again) beat Bruce Larson's 6.63/217. He faced Johnson in the final, and Johnson was strong as he had run Low ET at 6.29 in the first round, of eliminations. But Burgin got the win with a 6.48/210.77 over George's 6.59/218. He won the UDRA North American Grandnationals held at Detroit Dragway. He ran 6.38/224.42 in round one, and in the semifinal, a 6.27/227 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.40/228 in the "Blue Max." He faced Tom Prock in the final, and Prock smoked the tires while Burgin ran 6.26/223.56 for the victory. Edgewater hosted an eight-car show soon after that. All cars there were to run three rounds, with the two Low ET cars running off in the final. Gary qualified for the final by winning his first race over Murf McKinney with a 6.18. The other finalist was Prudhomme, who ran 6.07. The final turned out to be one-sided as Gary slowed to 6.46 while the "Snake" ran 6.13 for the win. Burgin qualified #3 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.18/234.98. A first-round 6.30/234.98 advanced when Dale Pulde fouled against him. But in round two, a 6.40/230.17 lost to Shumake's 6.22/226. The Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race was held at Englishtown on June 21, and Burgin made his mark. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the opening round at 6.16/234.37 while beating Les Cassidy's 6.30/213. He also ran a solo 6.21 when his opponent Al Segrini broke. Gary went up against Pete Williams, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the final. Pete wasn't far behind in performance as he had run 6.18 earlier. In the final, Burgin had to settle for the runner-up spot as his 6.23/232.55 finished second to Williams' 6.20/224. He qualified #8 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.16/234.37, but an off-pace 6.40/231.36 in the first round, lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.29/236. He was runner-up to Prudhomme at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 6.21, and in round one, a 6.23/227.27 beat Kenny Bernstein. He soloed into the final with a 6.20/227.84 when Johnson failed to show. On the single run, he burned some pistons. A final round 6.47 lost to Prudhomme's 6.08. Another runner-up finish came at the Jungle Jim Memorial Funny Car Championships at Maple Grove. There he lost to Ed McCulloch in the final. He then went to Atco for its ninth annual Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and Burgin was unbeatable. A first-round 6.38/216.34 defeated Tommy Ivo's 6.55/201. He picked up a tenth in the semifinal, running 6.28/230.17 (Top Speed), to beat Prock, who shut off early. He faced Jim Adolph in the final, and Gary set Low ET with a 6.26/230.17 blast that got the victory over Jim's 6.51/185. He then stopped off at New England for the NHRA Division One final. This was a good race as he and Prudhomme were far ahead of everyone else in terms of performance. Gary's 6.32/224.43 beat Bruce Larson's 6.59/218 in round one, and a 6.30/225.00 in the semifinal stopped Kosty Ivanof's 6.88/177. The "Snake" had the edge going into the final, but Burgin stepped up, running a 6.18/231.95 to make it close. Don's 6.15/224 got the win. | Best NHRA times of 6.125/234.98. Formerly listed 6.02/241.93 bests for 1978, but we need evidence. Let me know if we are wrong.

Notes: Ran 6.17 at Union Grove, 6.12 at Indy, 6.14 at Seattle. | If there was ever a time not to debut a new car it would have to be at Indy for the US Nationals. But that's what Tripp Shumake did in 1977. There were almost 40 FC's trying to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Crew chief Dan Geare showed that he knew his stuff by tuning Tripp to 6.17 and 6.12 times (at 231.36) in qualifying. Either time would have made the show, but the 6.12 put him in the #5 spot. In the first round Shumake's 6.39/216 beat alternate Gene Snow who got into the field after Dale Emery crashed in qualifying. In the second round, Tripp shut off to 9.59/95 with problems, losing to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.10/228. At Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, Tripp set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.14. Only fifteen cars showed so Tripp got the "odd-lot" solo in the opening round. A second round 6.28/223.88 beat Gordie Bonin's 6.40/230, but a semifinal 6.29/223.32 lost a close one to Jim Dunn's 6.28/229. Irwindale held its last race on October 1 and the "Powers Steel" car was there. It was a sixteen-car show and in round one, Tripp's 6.40/205 beat Tom Prock, who had problems and shut off. In the second round, he improved to 6.27 at only 202 to beat Ron Colson's 6.47/221 in the "Hawaiian." Unfortunately, the car broke on the line in the semifinals, giving opponent Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" a solo into the final. A week later (October. 9), the team was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. Shumake's 6.27/231 qualified #14. A quick-leaving 6.42 beat Henry Harrison's quicker 6.37 in round one, but once again the car broke (transmission) and he lost to Prudhomme in round two.

Notes: By '78, few teams were using Vega bodies in AA/FC racing, and those that were, were more times than not, underfunded teams. This was one Vega that was feared by other teams. Anderson had the only Vega to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.41/221.67 put him in the dreaded #9 spot forcing him to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme, in the opening round. The "Snake" won their race with a 6.52/221 over Tom's 6.81/202.70. He made it into the final at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and, in the semifinals, Tom Hoover smoked the tires against him and shut off. He faced Bob Pickett in the final, and this time Anderson smoked the tires while Pickett ran 6.61/219 for the victory. He was also runner-up to Mike Miller at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis. Tom also had the only Vega that made the field for the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. His 6.36/228.45 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. But in the first round, the car got out of shape against John Lombardo, and he shut off to a 7.72/113.06 loss. Anderson got another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. A final round 6.25/222.77 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16/237. He was at Edgewater for the next Division 3 race, where he qualified #2 with a 6.43/218.97. A first-round 6.46 beat Murf McKinney's 6.91, but he got out of shape in the semifinals and lost to Larry Fullerton. Of course, he had the only Vega in the show at Englishtown for the Summernationals, but this Vega was laying down some numbers. His 6.17/230.76 qualified #9 and put him up against Prudhomme for the first round again. Prudhomme's 6.13 won their race, but Anderson's 6.25 in losing was nothing to be ashamed of. Tom did not race at any IHRA races until the Northern Nationals at Milan in July. At Milan, his 6.35 qualified #3. An opening round 6.25/227.27 beat Fullerton's 6.69/211, and a strong 6.12/229.59 in the semifinal beat Dave Settles' 6.17/215 in the "Mr. Norm" car. He faced Denny Savage in the final. Savage had run 6.11 in his semifinal race. But the hoped-for close final never came about as Anderson's wheelie bar broke, causing suspension damage to the Vega and forcing him to shut off. Savage had his own problems, as his on fire 7.28/134 got him the trophy. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show. His speed in qualifying was 225.56, but he blew his engine and was replaced by Kenny Bernstein in eliminations. Things didn't go so well back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 21 cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, and all just got one crack at it. Unfortunately, Anderson failed to run quick enough to qualify. He was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 2 race. In the opening round, his 6.40/219.51 defeated Ray Moats' 6.75/215. But he had damaged the engine and couldn't make his semifinal date with eventual winner Billy Meyer. He then went to Baton Rouge for the Division 4 final, where he finally picked up a victory. He was long overdue. At Indy, for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, Anderson had the only Vega that qualified for the field. His 6.19/224.59 got him the #13 spot. He ran 6.25/224.43 in the first round of eliminations, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.16/236.
