Notes: By '78, few teams were using Vega bodies in AA/FC racing, and those that were, were more times than not, underfunded teams. This was one Vega that was feared by other teams. Anderson had the only Vega to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.41/221.67 put him in the dreaded #9 spot forcing him to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme, in the opening round. The "Snake" won their race with a 6.52/221 over Tom's 6.81/202.70. He made it into the final at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and, in the semifinals, Tom Hoover smoked the tires against him and shut off. He faced Bob Pickett in the final, and this time Anderson smoked the tires while Pickett ran 6.61/219 for the victory. He was also runner-up to Mike Miller at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis. Tom also had the only Vega that made the field for the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. His 6.36/228.45 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. But in the first round, the car got out of shape against John Lombardo, and he shut off to a 7.72/113.06 loss. Anderson got another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. A final round 6.25/222.77 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16/237. He was at Edgewater for the next Division 3 race, where he qualified #2 with a 6.43/218.97. A first-round 6.46 beat Murf McKinney's 6.91, but he got out of shape in the semifinals and lost to Larry Fullerton. Of course, he had the only Vega in the show at Englishtown for the Summernationals, but this Vega was laying down some numbers. His 6.17/230.76 qualified #9 and put him up against Prudhomme for the first round again. Prudhomme's 6.13 won their race, but Anderson's 6.25 in losing was nothing to be ashamed of. Tom did not race at any IHRA races until the Northern Nationals at Milan in July. At Milan, his 6.35 qualified #3. An opening round 6.25/227.27 beat Fullerton's 6.69/211, and a strong 6.12/229.59 in the semifinal beat Dave Settles' 6.17/215 in the "Mr. Norm" car. He faced Denny Savage in the final. Savage had run 6.11 in his semifinal race. But the hoped-for close final never came about as Anderson's wheelie bar broke, causing suspension damage to the Vega and forcing him to shut off. Savage had his own problems, as his on fire 7.28/134 got him the trophy. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show. His speed in qualifying was 225.56, but he blew his engine and was replaced by Kenny Bernstein in eliminations. Things didn't go so well back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 21 cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, and all just got one crack at it. Unfortunately, Anderson failed to run quick enough to qualify. He was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 2 race. In the opening round, his 6.40/219.51 defeated Ray Moats' 6.75/215. But he had damaged the engine and couldn't make his semifinal date with eventual winner Billy Meyer. He then went to Baton Rouge for the Division 4 final, where he finally picked up a victory. He was long overdue. At Indy, for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, Anderson had the only Vega that qualified for the field. His 6.19/224.59 got him the #13 spot. He ran 6.25/224.43 in the first round of eliminations, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.16/236.

Notes: The new Trans Am replaced the Monza in which the team started the year. Imbrogno had his new Firebird at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He was the second alternate there with a 6.37. Len was at Beech Bend in August for the NHRA Division Three final. He ran well, reaching the final round where his 6.29/223.88 finished runner-up to Tim Grose's 6.23/227. Ran best NHRA national event times of 6.106/231.95 at Indy. Where did the team run 239.36? Photo from US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan.

Notes: This was one of the original four Mercury Comets built by the Logghe Brothers. Nicholson, Chrisman, and Kenz & Leslie got the other three. Injected 427 SOHC, C-6 automatic combo. Set both ends of the S/XS national record at 8.61 and 172.72 mph at Tulsa World Finals and bettered that by better than three-tenths at Indy. - Danny White | The 1966 NHRA Nationals at Indy were the first to feature dedicated classes for funny cars: S/XS, A/XS, B, XS. Supercharged experimental Stock was where the blown cars and class-dominating (but normally aspirated) Logghe Comets went to play. Schartman and his yellow RSE Merc clinched the S/XS trophy with an 8.28/174.41 blast. Since the NHRA had not yet established a formal Funny Car Eliminator, the class runs for S/XS were the closest thing the fans would get. - RT | Listed in FUELFC due to its lightweight, flip-top configuration despite being injected. | Roy Steffey and Eddie Schartman were tough to beat in '66. Few did. Roy was the owner, and the car cost $16,000 to build. This was the third Comet delivered of the four Comets built. The 2,000 lb. Logghe built Comet, and the bare 118" chassis weighed just 97 lbs. Depending on track conditions, the Ford rear end used either a 3.90 gear or a 4.11. The SOHC engine was stock-sized, but Delta Machine reworked the crank. M/T rods and pistons were used, and the compression was 11:1. Crane supplied many cams to the SOHC Ford cars, and this one was no different as two Nitro 612 cams were used. Aluminum ported heads helped keep the weight down. The stock valves measured 2.25 for the intake and 1.90 for the exhaust. Compared to the Chrysler, the combustion chambers were large at 124 ccs compared to 98 ccs. The pump and fuel injector were Hilborn products, and short tubes were used for high rpm operation. The engine made over 1,000 hp burning 96% nitro. | Schartman debuted his new flip-top Comet in April at Motor City Dragway, where he made about 15 runs to shake down the car. After that, the car was taken to Capitol Raceway for Jim Kelly to photograph for Super Stock Magazine. The car's competition debut came at Cecil County, where Ed faced Bob Harrop in a best of three match. Schartman won two straight. Things did not go so well when he faced Maynard Rupp and his Hemi-powered Chevelle at US 131 on May 1. Rupp beat him two straight with times of 9.56/157 and 9.49/161 against Eddie's 9.90/144 and 10.02/140. But as Schartman dialed the car in, the ETs continued to drop. He was at Atco on May 28 for a best of three against Del Heinelt driving the "Seaton Shaker" Chevelle. Schartman won two straight with a best of 9.29/150. The next day (May 29), he was at Englishtown, where he faced the four-engined "Wagonmaster" of Tom McCourry. Ed again won two straight with a best of 9.09/155. A big Funny Car show was run at York US 30 on June 11. The Comet was flying, setting a track record 8.43 at 162.57. An 8.57/161.57 beat Hans Anderson in the first round, but a wheelstand in the second round forced him to shut off against Houston Platt. The following day found him in a match race against Bob Harrop, driving Al Graeber's new "Tickle Me Pink" Charger. Ed won all three of their races with runs of 8.85/154.90, a track record 8.77 at 155.97, and a 9.06/161. Another match race win came at Cordova on June 18, where he beat Arnie Beswick two straight with times of 8.98/149.95 and 9.05/156.79. It was then off to Dragway 42 the next day, where he faced Tommy Stringfield's "Triple Trouble," a three-engined Nova. Again, Schartman won all three races, running 9.30/152.80, 9.37/154.90, and 9.24/154.90. He got knocked down a notch at US 30 on June 25, where he lost two straight to Ronnie Sox. The "Sox & Martin" 'Cuda was running great, and in the first race, Ronnie's 8.64/157 beat Eddie's 8.87/152.28. In the second race, the Comet went into a wheelstand, and he lost to Sox's 8.67/155. Eddie was at York, PA, on July 17 for the NHRA Division One race. He set a new S/XS record of 8.87. The final was supposed to be between him and Jack Chrisman's similar blown Comet, but Chrisman had bearing problems, and Ed soloed for the S/XS class win with an 8.82/159. Shortly after that, he competed at the CARS Magazine meet at Cecil County, but he lost to eventual winner Mike Buckle driving the "Ramchargers" Dart in the first round, of the 2,000 lb. fuel class. He set an 8.29 track record at Lakeland while beating Steve Bovan three straight on August 14. His speed on the run was 163.63. At the NHRA US Nationals, he beat Mercury teammate "Dyno Don" Nicholson for S/XS class honors with an 8.28/174.41. These two would have a match race at Martin, Michigan's US 131 on September 17. It was a history-setting match, and while Schartman lost, he did have the footnote in history by being the car in the other lane when Nicholson ran the first "seven. "Dyno's" 7.96/169 beat Eddie's 8.58/168.35. He faced Dick Landy at Thompson on September 25, where he beat him three straight with a best of 8.48/173.65. Early in October, he had a rematch against Sox at Maple Grove. Schartman set both ends of the track record in their first race with an 8.46/166.66. But while getting the car ready for the second race, Ed had his engine let go. He could not run the last two races, and Sox won the match by forfeit. Ed won it all at the NHRA World Finals in Tulsa, where six of the nation's top machines faced off. In round one, he beat Larry Reyes, 8.674/172.41 to 9.08/161. He got a bye in round two but ran a Low ET (to that point) 8.609/172.41. The two flip-top Mercurys met in the final, as Eddie lined up against Dyno Don. Schartman dropped more than two tenths to take an 8.386/174.08 victory over Nicholson's off-pace 10.60-80. Ed grabbed another victory by winning the Irwindale Funny Car Spectacular run on November 1. He beat Jim Liberman's new Nova in the opening round of eliminations with an 8.83/173.97 (Top Speed). His 8.50/173.41 took out Cecil Yother, who smoked the tires in his topless Belvedere in the semifinal. He faced off against Gas Ronda in the final, and Ronda got out of shape and shut off while Eddie ran 8.44 (Low ET) at 172.08 for the win. Over the season, Ed traveled 70,000 to 80,000 miles between races.

Notes: Arnold's '72 car used a 114" Mike Leiby chassis. It weighed 1,850 lbs. The Ed-Pink Hemi produced 1,500 hp. On one of his earliest runs, he ran 6.69/218. Larry was at Miami-Hollywood on April 23 for the Florida State Championships. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #2. An opening round 6.88/190.27 beat Harry Hudson, and in the semifinals, Ed O'Brien fouled, so he ran an easy 7.90 to advance into the final. He faced Al Marshall in the "Tyrant" car, and Arnold set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.78/217.39 to claim the victory over Al's 6.94/208. A week later (April 30), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He beat Charlie Wilson in the first round with a 6.58, and a second-round 6.62 beat Sid Foster. He had a bit of luck in the semifinals when Richard Tharp had to shut down the "Blue Max" due to a cracked oil pan. Arnold ran a solo 6.83. In the final, he faced the tough Barry Setzer Vega driven by Pat Foster. Foster laid down an impressive 6.40/223 to get the win over the "Kingfish's" 6.76/214.24 runner-up effort. In July, Arnold was at Beech Bend for its Funny Car Invitational event. Larry qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.60/214.28, but in the first round, his 6.74 lost to low qualifier Don Schumacher's 6.45. Soon after that, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. There, his 6.66 qualified #6. In the first round, he beat Steve Tansy's 6.92 with a 6.64. An off-pace 7.85 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.51 in round two. The best NHRA national event times were 6.629 at Indy and 219.51 at Gainesville. Larry also ran 6.56 Tri-City. Where was the 6.45/225 run?

Notes: Won AHRA Winternationals 1972. | At the end of June through the July 4 weekend, I ran nine races in 14 days! Set the track record at Beech Bend at 6.45/220.04 over the July 4 weekend. - Dale Pulde, 7/3/15 | Pulde started the season with a win at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline, but he had to beat the "killer car" of the day not once but twice to get the victory. Dale ran a 6.71 in the semifinals to beat Pat Foster's 6.72 in the bucks-up "Barry Setzer Vega." Leroy Goldstein won the other semifinal race but broke and could not make the final. That meant that Dale would race Foster again for the title. Dale won that final with a 6.68 over Pat's 6.85. The MT Pinto was at the Lions Grand Premiere race, and Dale beat Bill Leavitt's 7.11 in the first round, with a 6.79/215.82, but he lost in round two. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, once again, Pulde met Foster. It happened in the semifinals, and they both smoked the tires, with Dale's 7.57 beating the Vega's 7.78. In the final, he ran Ed McCulloch, and the Pinto lost a motor, giving Ed the victory. The team was at Lakeland on March 6 for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.96 qualified #6 in the field. He beat Charlie Wilson in the first round with a 7.02, and in round two, he beat a crossed-up Jim Liberman. A 7.15 beat Preston Davis in the semifinal, and he found himself in another final round. Unfortunately, he crossed the centerline in the final, and Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" won. Dale lost in the second round to McCulloch at the AHRA Pro-Am race at West Palm Beach. Pulde had one of the four cars competing at Chandler Raceway in Indiana late in April. He did well, winning his races and reaching the final round against Clare Sanders, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." Dale got the jump and looked like he had this one in the bag when the car suddenly got out of shape and almost went off the track and into the grass. He obviously had to shut it down and watch as Sanders roared past. He was at Rockingham on April 30 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It didn't go smoothly for the MT team, as they lost two engines. The second engine let go while winning his second-round race, and he could not run against Foster in the semifinal. Pulde was one of 22 cars attempting to qualify at the IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas. His 6.84 qualified #6, and in the opening round, he singled with a 6.70 when Charlie Therwhanger lost his 'chute on the line. In round two, he improved to 6.53 at 205.47 to beat Jake Johnston's 6.95/202, but in the semifinals, the Pinto lost a rear end, and eventual winner Tharp soloed into the final. The team's next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Dale qualified #13, and in his first-round meeting with Gene Snow, the car kicked off its blower belt while Snow made for the big end. He was at Rockford for the East-West meet, and it was an unusual 12-car show. Twenty-four cars attempted to qualify, and Pulde's 7.20 got him the #9 spot. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals there. Things went well at the AHRA Marathon Nationals in Marion County in July. There was even a little bit of lady luck riding on their side as in the semifinals, Don Prudhomme beat Pulde but lost a motor while doing it. In the final, Pulde was reinstated to run Leroy Goldstein driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. It was a close race, but Dale's 6.88 nipped Leroy's 6.89 for the gold.

Notes: Bill entered the '72 season as the quickest in the class due to his 6.48 run at Lions in December. There was nothing "trick" about the car; it used a 118" Byron Blair chassis. The engine was a '58 354 Chrysler Hemi punched out to 471 inches built by Leavitt. Internals included Crower cam, Howards rods, and Venolia pistons. Cragar supplied the blower drive, manifold, and headers. The injection was by Crower. A Lenco transmission transferred the power back to a quick change rear end. Leavitt had a good season in '72. He started it the right way by winning the New Year's race at Fremont. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #1 with a 6.75. An opening round 6.67 beat Ed McCulloch, and in the semifinals, Bill's 6.76 beat Gene Snow, who had a transmission failure. He faced Twig Zeigler in the final, and he set a track record of 6.64 in winning. Leavitt's speed on the run was 208. He lost early at the AHRA Winternationals, where Leroy Goldstein stopped him. He also lost early at the second OCIR All-Pro race, where he had problems in the first round, and shut off to a 10.96 loss to eventual winner Snow's 6.69. The following week (January 28), he was at Lions for the Grand Premiere event. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.11/169.17 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.79/215 in Mickey Thompson's Pinto. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (times not reported). He had Jim Nicoll's name on the side of the car there. That was Bill's last NHRA national event of 1972. Leavitt set a 6.47 track record at Atco and a 6.45 Maple Grove track record in July. Bill ran 6.818/196.50 at Tulsa PRA in September. Bill qualified #10 for the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 (times unknown). In round one, he beat a broken Danny Ongais with a 7.27. In round two, Billy Meyer nipped his 6.87 with a 6.81.

Notes: Meyer started the '82 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.97/241.28. In the first round, his tire-smoking 6.38/240.64 beat Dennis Geisler. In the second round, he was upset as Doc Halladay's 6.10/234 beat his 6.18/238.72. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 6.13/239.99 qualified #12. He beat Mike Dunn's 6.31/232 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.29/237.46. But in round two, he lost to John Force. In April, he was at OCIR's 64 car show, where he reached the final only to have his 6.11 finish runner-up to Don Prudhomme's 6.00.The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Meyer qualified #1 for the tough eight-car field with a 5.89/249.30 (Top Speed). In the opening round, he slowed to 6.22/207.85 and lost to Paul Smith's 6.05/241 in the "Entertainer." He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.02 and lasted until the semifinals when he shut off due to tire shake and lost to John Pott in Larry Coogle's "Sting." Shortly after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he got another runner-up finish. His 6.38/247.23 (Top Speed) finished second best to Raymond Beadle's 6.35/233 in the "Blue Max." His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car field, and his 6.00/242.58 qualified #3. In the first round, Meyer's 6.09/244 beat Tripp Shumake's 6.21/235. But he smoked the tires in the semi-final and shut off against Prudhomme. He was also running really well at Columbus in mid-June for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 5.96/246.57 qualified second behind Prudhomme's 5.92/248. Meyer beat Smith in round one before losing to eventual winner Frank Hawley who was driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in round two. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He really found some horsepower as his 5.92/254.23 (Top Speed and a new track record) qualified second to Beadle's 5.88. He also ran 253.52 on an earlier qualifying pass. Although Meyer lost to Tom Anderson in the first round, his speed was tops for the meet, even better than the TF dragsters! He didn't run as well as he hoped to at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.08/240.64 qualified #6 in the eight-car show. In the first round, his 6.23/223.88 fell to Hawley's 6.10/224. The car continued to make power at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Billy qualified #1 and once again set Top Speed of the meet over TF cars as well with a 254.23. But he smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to John Pott. Doing it at the IHRA events was one thing, but when he got to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and did it again, well, that was another thing. He reset both ends of the NHRA record with backed-up 5.829/254.95 marks during qualifying. Once again, he had Top Speed of the meet as Mark Oswald had Top Speed for the TF cars with a 254.23. Billy then ran 5.89/250.69 in the first round over Hawley. But that dreaded tire smoke did him in for round two, where he dialed in too much power and lost to Mike Dunn in the "Hawaiian." Meyer was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of July. He set Low ET and Top Speed during qualifying at 6.12/240.00 (Top Speed over TF cars as well). His time would have qualified #5 for TF. He then defeated Rob Williams' 6.47 with a 6.14/236.22, and a 6.19/223.88 took out Kenny Bernstein's 6.17/233 in the semi-final. He faced the "Blue Max" in the final, and Beadle shut down to 6.85/149 while Meyer ran 6.16/235.60 for the victory. He almost followed that up with another win the week later (August 8), when he finished runner-up to Dale Pulde at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. Shortly after that, he was back at OCIR for its Summer Showdown event. Billy showed up with his new EXP and ran 6.07/217.38 on his first qualifying pass. On his second attempt, the car broke a rear end. He then unloaded his Firebird and used it in the race.In round one, his 5.92/251.39 (Top Speed) beat Jim Dunn's 6.29/231. Dunn's run qualified him for the semi-final as ten cars had run the first round, with the four lowest ETs advancing to the final four. So once again, the two raced with the same results. This time Meyer ran 5.98/249.30 over Jim's 6.24/213. He faced the Low ET car of John Lombardo in the final, and both had horrible runs, but Meyer's troubled 8.21/107 got the win over John's 10.17. He was nowhere near as fast as the TF dragsters at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Meyer continued to run his Firebird here as he would in all the remaining NHRA events. He qualified #4 for the eight-car show with a 5.98/250.00 (Top Speed), but at this event, Oswald reset the NHRA top fuel speed record to 256.41. Meyer's opponent, Anderson, fouled in the first round, so he advanced with a 6.18/218.96. In the semi-final, his 6.08/247.93 lost to eventual winner Hawley's 5.97/238. Billy became the second funny car over 250 on July 17, 1982, with a 250.69 at the NHRA Summernationals (second entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car). His 254.95 was the highest speed of the year except for Oswald's top fuel car, which went 256 and 255 (twice). | In May, at an OCIR open 8-car MD benefit event, Billy Meyer won FC, Johnny Abbott TF. That '97 at Pomona was off and on the throttle, tire shake. Bill Flournoy from '81 was still the CC at the beginning of the year. An NOS ad in May '82 prior to his OCIR/Muscular Dystrophy win said he'd been 252 in Ohio. Salem? A check out run at the MD event: 6.11/246. Meyer used a Larry Minor TF motor, Crower box and the whole nine, at the 64-FC OCIR events. On week two they removed the scoop for visibility. Absent week two: Burgin, Iverson, whose Camaro broke something expensive-sounding on the dry hop at the first one. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.48/272.14 qualified #7. He beat Mark Oswald in the first round, with a 5.50/274.55 and a second-round 5.45/273.63 beat Jim White's 5.50/272 in the "Hawaiian." But in the semifinals, his 5.41/273.22 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.31/272. He qualified #3 with a 5.33/274.64 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, and an opening-round 5.27/282.57 stopped Jim Murphy. But he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Del Worsham. He ran really well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. A 5.28/282.39 qualified #3, and he beat Gary Densham in round one. In round two, Mike Dunn's 5.46/251 lost to Ed's 5.30/278.29. He fell off to 5.40/276.32 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Oswald. He faced Force in the final for the money. Unfortunately, McCulloch smoked the tires and shut off to 6.11/159.37 while John picked up the win with a 5.21/278. Ed continued to qualify well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, a 5.29/272.06 got the #3 spot. He beat Gary Bolger in round one, with a 5.40/270.43, but he lost to Tom Hoover in the second round. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Once again, Ed qualified #3, this time with a 5.31/276.24. He beat Freddie Neely in round one before smoking the tires and losing to White in round two. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Ed slipped to #4 in qualifying with a 5.32/276.07. In the first round, Paula Martin lost an engine against him, and Ed advanced with a 5.54/256.70. A second round 5.52/267.77 beat Al Hofmann. But 5.5s were not going to get the job done, and, in the semifinal, Ed's 5.56/273.05 lost to Hoover's 5.48. The seventh race of the season was the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. McCulloch returned to his #3 qualifying spot with a 5.34/272.06. He beat Murphy in round one, with a 5.48/271.73, but a round two 5.41/259.44 lost to Force's 5.35/267. He followed the tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he "only" qualified #7 with a 5.48/265.01. In the opening round, he beat Martin's 5.69/245 with a 5.57/258.69, but he lost to eventual winner White in round two. He then made a stop at Kansas City International for its Summernationals. Ed set Low ET there at 5.62, and he reached the final against Force. The two had a good race, but John's 5.68/261 beat Ed's late leaving 5.65/257.50. Back on the NHRA trail at Englishtown for the Summernationals. McCulloch ran 5.26/271.82 to qualify #4. He stopped Martin again in round one, with a 5.40/266.58. But a second-round 5.47/263.08 lost to Worsham's 5.34/272. Worsham would go on to win the race. McCulloch was way overdue for a win. It almost came at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.43. His speed on the run was 257.80. He beat rookie Len Seroka in round one, with a 5.82/252.31, and a second-round 5.55/256.19 beat Densham's 5.69/218. In the semifinals, his 5.59/257.14 trailered Hofmann at 5.76/253. This put Ed in his second NHRA final of the year. He faced Mike Dunn, who had been running just about a tenth quicker than Ed was throughout eliminations. Sure enough, Mike's 5.47/257 got the victory over Ed, who tried to make up the difference and fouled away a 5.54/255.82. Ed's best NHRA times were 5.237 from Maple Grove and the 282.57 from Phoenix.

Notes: Bernstein was one of the first FC racers o transport his car with an eighteen-wheeler. The Peterbilt also carried two spare engines as he entered the '79 season with four Ed Pink 1/2 strokers. Kenny failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He did much better on February 18 for Beeline's NHRA Division 7 Opener. He qualified for the eight-car show and lasted until the final, where he finished runner-up to Tripp Shumake. He then went to the Bakersfield March Meet, where he easily won his first-round race. In the second round, he ran 6.55/216.34 to beat a tire-shaking Shumake. The car got out of shape in the semifinal, and Kenny shut off to 9.53 in a loss to Jim Adolph's 6.29. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with a 6.33/229.59, but he got crossed up again and lost to Al Segrini in the first round. The following week (March 18), Kenny was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.17 but failed to reach the finals. On April 22, he won the IHRA Dixie Nationals in Atlanta by stopping Dale Pulde in the final. The NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge was postponed by rain and run on May 2. It was here that Kenny got his first NHRA National event victory. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.32/231.95. In round one, he beat Bob Pickett's 6.55/222 with a 6.36/234.98 (Top Speed). In the semifinals, a 6.49/202.55 beat Ron Colson's tire-smoking "Hawaiian." The final saw Kenny face future superstar John Force, and Force had his transmission break giving Kenny the victory with a 6.45/233.76. Bernstein was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 6.17 qualified #2 in the eight-car field, and in the first round, his 6.19/232.55 beat a tire-smoking Pulde, but in the semifinals, Paul Smith in the "Entertainer" got a jump on him, and his 6.39/226 beat Kenny's quicker 6.31/230.76. He qualified #8 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.20/233.76 but lost to Force's 6.27/220 in the first round with a 6.36/229.00. At the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, he again ran well. A 6.24 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. A 6.34 in the first round beat Smith's 6.61, and in the semifinals, his 6.57 beat John Pott's 6.95 in the "Mr. Norm" car. That put him in the final with Pulde. Unfortunately, Bernstein took a nap in the final, and his 6.31/223.88 finished runner-up to Dale's 6.47/234. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.35, but in the first round, he fouled against Pulde. The NHRA Summernationals was Kenny's next stop, and he qualified #6 there with a 6.20/238.09. A first-round 6.28 lost to Shumake's 6.23. He was in another final round the following week (July 22) at the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.15 qualified #2 for the eight-car show, and he worked his way into the final against Tim Grose. His 6.35/222.22 finished second best to Grose's 6.23/211. Bernstein followed the NHRA tour to Canada in early August for the Grandnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/234.37. He improved to a 6.25 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Segrini's 6.19. Kenny failed to qualify at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. All cars ran one round, and the eight lowest ETs advanced into the show regardless of winning or losing. He was runner-up to Billy Meyer at the NHRA Division 4 race at Baton Rouge. His final round 6.47/226.13 lost to Meyer's 6.41/232. At Indy, Kenny's 6.108/231.36 qualified #13 for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. In the opening round, his 6.120/241.93 lost to Ron Colson's 6.06/236 in the "Hawaiian." The Indy times were Kenny's best of the year. He followed that up with a big win at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships, where he stopped Roy Harris in the final. The following week, he was in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.27/227.84 qualified #12. In round one, he improved to 6.24/238.09 but lost to Jim Dunn's 6.10/238.

Notes: Finished number 8 in NHRA championship points in 1976. Photo shows the Jake Johnston driven, Revell sponsored "Pisano & Matsubara" Chevy Monza in the staging lanes at Indianapolis Raceway Park during the 1976 NHRA US Nationals. Jake qualified #5 with a 6.148/228.42 pass and lost in the first round, of eliminations to Gordie Bonin when his 6.552/191.08 was no match for Gordie's 6.347/225.56. - Tom Nagy | Jake debuted the new Monza for Pisano and Matsubara in January at the Sixth annual Nitro Bowl at Fremont. The race was run differently with all 14 cars making three runs and the winner based on the number of wins in competition. Johnston set Low ET in his first-round win with a 6.45 over Roger Garten, who was driving the "Warhorse." In his second race, he got out of shape and shut off, losing to Ed McCulloch. The team hurt some parts on that run and was unable to run their third race. He then went to OCIR for the season opener. A 7.03 was all that was needed to advance in the first round, when Don Prudhomme failed to show and a 6.39/203.16 got around McCulloch in the next round. In the final, Jake faced off against John Lombardo, who debuted a new Mustang II here. He wasn't even supposed to be in the show, but when the "Hawaiian" blew during warmups, Lombardo filled in. Jake tried hard in the final, but there was no stopping John this day as he had earlier set Low ET at 6.30 and he almost duplicated it with a 6.31 in the final to take the win. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.228/204.54 qualified #4. A first-round 6.365/202.24 beat a blower-popping Dale Pulde, but in round two, Johnston slowed to an off-pace 6.822/169.81 that lost to Gene Snow's 6.623/212.76. In March, Jake competed at OCIR's Fox Hunt race. There were 27 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Johnston's 6.62 got the #8 spot. He failed to reach the final, but ran well. He was back at OCIR on May 8 for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #5, forcing him to run low qualifier Lombardo in the first round. John smoked the tires while Jake ran 6.37/218 to advance. In the semifinals, he outran Tom McEwen's 6.50/206 with a 6.42/223. He faced the "Blue Max" driven by Raymond Beadle in the final and Beadle took the win with a 6.28/227. The team qualified #9 at Ontario at 6.327/222.22. They lost a first-round decision to Don Prudhomme, 6.211/222.22 to 6.421/225.56. Formerly listed 229.00 best speed. We need confirmation of that.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1993. Ran this 5.11 at Winternats - beating John Force - except he hit the top end timing cones, negating the time & losing the race. | Whit qualified #12 with a 5.26/285.08 at the NHRA Winternationals, and as mentioned above, defeated Force with a career-best 5.11, but was disqualified for crossing the centerline while hitting the cones. At the second NHRA race of the season, the Arizona Nationals, Whit qualified #8 with a 5.26/276.83. He lost to Kenji Okazaki's 5.30/268 in the first round, when he lost a motor and the car caught fire. Bazemore brought the car to a stop and he was OK. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, only 17 cars showed so qualifying was relatively easy. Whit qualified on the "bump" with a 9.97/81.54. Unfortunately, that meant that he had to run low qualifier John Force in round one. Whit ran a strong 5.24/261.32, but lost to Force's 5.18/282. Gainesville was the fourth stop on the NHRA schedule and Whit qualified #12 with a 5.40/248.20. He beat Del Worsham in the first round, with a 5.26/262.31. In round two, an off pace 5.50/209.10 lost to Gary Bolger's 5.32/268. The non-points race, the NHRA Winston Invitational, was Bazemore's next stop. He ran a motor-blowing 5.53/198.23 to qualify last in the eight-car field, but the resulting fire from the blown engine did too much damage to the car and he was unable to run in eliminations. The car was repaired and ready for Atlanta and the NHRA Southern Nationals in late April. A 5.24/280.28 qualified #8. In the first round, the motor let go while beating Jim Epler with a 5.33/236.71 and he was unable to return for round two. Mid-May found the Fast Orange team at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where they qualified #10 with a 5.51/272.14. Whit stepped it up to a 5.40/274.22 to beat Cruz Pedregon's 5.40/276 in the first round. A second round 5.43/269.62 lost to Wyatt Radke's 5.35/281. The following week (May 23), the NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals. Whit ran 5.21/280.61 to qualify #7. In the first round, the car broke. The Probe's career came to an end at the NHRA Springnationals. There he had a bad fire and crash that left him with a mild concussion. He was out of a ride until July 10. That was when he first drove Johnny West's car.

At Indy, they were 5th alternate after making the maximum number of runs - 10! They were rewarded with a nice but non-qualifying 6.197/236.84. Dave qualified #11 at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 6.24/235.60. He had trouble in the first round, and shut off to 7.51/118.42, while Raymond Beadle advanced with a 6.12/231. Notes: Chapman Automotive built the 120" frame for the car. The Camaro body came from Fiberglass Ltd. It used an early 354 Hemi that kept its stock displacement. A factory crank was used along with M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. Isky supplied the cam. An Enderle injection unit sat on the 18% overdriven blower that rested on a Cragar intake manifold. The car was run on 70% nitro. An estimated 1,200 hp was on tap. John Hogan helped maintain the engine. A Torqueflite transmission was used that fed the power back to a Ford rear axle carrying 3.90 gears. The car weighed 2,120 lbs. The cost of the project was $15,000. O'Donnell was at Gary, Indiana, for a UDRA Circuit race in August. Going into the race, he held both ends of the track record at 8.07/181. By the end of this race, he would not hold either. His 8.10/180.00 beat Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler," who blew a transmission in the first round. In the semi-final, he ran 8.11, but he lost to Doug Cook's 8.01 in the "Stone, Woods & Cooke" Mustang. Ron drove the car to 7.85/193 at Union Grove. The speed was a track record. | Gary ran 8.30/185.94, 8.36/180.72, and 8.48/181.08 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Also ran 8.19 at Irwindale. - DL

Notes: "Fast Eddie" Schartman was one of the racers chosen to receive one of the Logghe-built Comet Cyclones from Ford Motor Company. Schartman had worked his way up the racing ranks before getting into funny car racing. In 1966, he was one of the top funny car racers with the advanced machines. In 1967, he was already on his third paint job when he received the Air Lift sponsorship. The Air Lift Rattler featured the updated Logghe chassis and kept on winning. With Amos Satterlee tuning, Schartman won the Manufacturer's Funny Car Championship at Orange County with runs of 8.17/184.08, 7.85/185.18 (Low ET), and 7.87/185.56. - BS | 427 SOHC, C-6 auto combo. | Ran 8.65/164 at AHRA Winters on January 29. Eddie first ran a blower late in the year at Fremont's Third Annual exhibition Car Championships in Oct. They ran 30% nitro and beat Ronnie Runyan and Pat Minick, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with an 8.20/179. He won the race beating Terry Hedrick's Corvair in the final with an 8.08 (Low ET). A week later, he was at Irwindale for the experimental Stock Invitational. Eddie won this race, too. He beat Doug Thorley and Roger Lindamood in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, his 7.97/181.08 beat Butch Leal's 8.28/150. Schartman faced Ron O'Donnell in the final, and he set Low ET with a 7.93 at 181.36 to win. He was at Lions in the first week of November for the East-West Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, he exploded a blower in the opening round and lost to Leal. He wasn't down and out for long as he then won the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. All cars ran three rounds of racing, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. An opening round 8.17/184.04 beat Leal's 8.22/176. His second round 7.85/185.18 won over Thorley, and a 7.87/185.56 in round three assured him a spot in the final. There he faced surprise finalist Roy Gay. - Ron Howard Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA 11/25/67

Notes: Began the year with the Monza but later switched to the Corvette. They ran 6.382/222.77 to qualify #12 at NHRA Pomona, CA but hit the guardrail in round one. A 6.668/222.77 was the first alternate at the Gatornationals. The team stepped up to the #5 qualifier at NHRA Columbus with a 6.200/235.60 but lost to Tom Prock in round one, 6.33/229 to 6.43/229.59. Ron also qualified #5 at Englishtown at 6.130/236.84. He beat Kenny Bernstein in round one, 6.23/236.22 to 6.52/205. In round two, Ron laid a massive holeshot on Don Prudhomme and took a 6.33/236.22 to 6.17/241 victory. However, Ed McCulloch got to him in the semis, 6.13/236 to 6.65/230.76. Notes: First funny car over 300 MPH and ninth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club (including Top Fuel) on October 3/1993, with a 300.40 at Topeka, Ka Epler started the season driving this Daytona at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.19/288.46. Unfortunately, in round one, he had a rear slick blow out and damage the car. He crossed the finish with a 5.80/178.25, but lost to Jack Wyatt's 5.52/249. He had the car fixed and was at the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona. A 5.24/282.48 qualified #6 and once again he met Wyatt in the first round. This time he had no problems and his 5.41/261.02 beat Wyatt's 5.48/246. Jim took it easy in round two when Gordon Mineo broke and in the semifinals, he advanced with a 25.90-40.76 when his opposition, Al Hofmann, was unable to show after destroying his car while winning his second-round race. This moved Jim into the final against Cruz Pedregon. He was faced with a lot of boos and jeers since he had not made any hard runs in the last two rounds and the crowd was against him for it. In his defense, he was running wounded and was just trying to keep the engine together and through luck, made his way into the final. He lost to Pedregon in the final, but it was not one of his better days as the crowd really got to him. Nothing was said, but his wife wrote a letter to National Dragster explaining their side of the story. Things returned to normal at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. Epler qualified #3 with a career-best (to this point) 5.12/281.77. He smoked the tires in the first round, and shut off to an 8.55/91.95 that lost to Brent Fanning's 5.82/231. The team didn't run very well at the NHRA Gatornationals, qualifying on the "bump" with a 5.50/221.13 and losing to low qualifier Hofmann in round one. Things were even worse at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car show and Jim ended up as the third alternate with a 5.61/254.59 best. Epler had no problems qualifying at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.28/266.11 placed him #9 in the field. Eliminations were a different story as he lost to Whit Bazemore in round one. The sixth race of the season was the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. A 5.56/275.31 qualified #12. The Daytona broke in the first round, against Gordie Bonin. More problems kept him out of the show at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals. The best he could run in qualifying was a 9.09/95.90. At the NHRA Springnationals, he was driving the Cutlass bodied car.

Notes: Waterman built Hemi. Billy ran 6.197 for Low ET and a National Record at Indy in '74 but ended up smoking the tires in a rain-delayed final and lost to the Snake in the ARMY 'Cuda. Ran 6.34 at Bristol, 6.44 at Englishtown, 6.44 at Ontario. | Billy Meyer was 19 in '74, and he had already been behind the wheel of a funny car for a few years. He had won the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet at only 17 years of age! Before this new Mustang II was built, he had already been involved with four other Funny Car's. His new car was built by S&R and used a 118" chassis. The fiberglass Mustang II body came from J&E. Sid Waterman built the Hemi, which used a Moldex 1/2 stroker crank for a displacement of 484. M/T pistons held Venolia pistons. Crower was the choice for the camshaft. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold, and on top of the GMC 6/71 sat an Enderle fuel injection unit fed by a Hilborn pump. A Lenco transmission transferred the power back to a Ford rear with 3.90 gears. The car wasn't cheap to build as it cost Meyer $25,000. The August '74 issue of Drag Racing USA claimed that the car's best (at the time) was 6.35/231. Billy started the '74 season by qualifying #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.41. A first-round 6.48/211.26 advanced when Russell Long shut off early. In the second round, a 6.72/195.22 beat Gordon Mineo's 6.83/188. Unfortunately, he was shut off on the line in the semifinals with an oil leak. Billy was at Englishtown in June for a best of three match race against Russell Long, who was driving one of "Jungle Jim" Liberman's Vegas. The two had a really close first race that saw Meyer's 6.86/195.65 beat Long's 6.87/174. Both lost traction in the second race, but Billy's 8.13/119.65 still came out on top over Russell's 8.36/181. Meyer had already won the match, but the two came out for a third run. The Mustang II ended up exploding a blower and slowing to 7.41/146.81 that lost to Long's 7.05/152. Shortly after that (June 16), he went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.49 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field. In the opening round, his 6.55/200.89 beat Bob Lagana's 6.90/191. He really picked it up in round two, where his 6.37/218.97 defeated Ron Colson's 6.53/218 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Shirl Greer blew his engine and caught fire in the semifinal, so Billy's 6.56/213.27 advanced easily. He went up against the "Black Magic" Vega of Al Segrini in the final. Their best times in eliminations were so close as Al had run a 6.38 best compared to Meyer's 6.37. It was going to be anyone's race. Meyer rose to the occasion, running Low ET at 6.34/223.88 to win over Segrini's 6.43/228. Another match race was run at West Salem, where he lost the match to Denny Savage driving the "Hawaiian." He also reached the final of IHRA's next national event, the Northern Nationals held at Mid America Dragway at the end of June. The final was kind of embarrassing for Meyer as he had to shut off on the line due to one of his headers falling off. Colson soloed for the victory. During the month, he had also driven the "Keeling and Clayton" car at several events. On July 3, he competed at the Funny Car Spectacular at Englishtown. He set Low ET in his first-round race, where he ran 6.50/202.70 to beat Roy Harris' 6.93/210 in "Jungle Jim" Liberman's second car. Unfortunately, the car broke on the burnout in the semifinal against eventual winner Raymond Beadle. He suffered three straight losses to Colson at Bluegrass Dragway. His best time for their match was only 7.12, while the "Chi-Town" car ran in the 6.7's and set track records. Many people had Meyer on their radar for the NHRA Summernationals, as when his car was right, he was tough to beat. A 6.55 qualified #7, and he improved to 6.44/210.77 in the opening round to beat an out-of-shape Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse." But he was disappointed in the second round, where he smoked the tires at 7.48 in a loss to eventual winner Segrini's 6.60. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 6.78/191.08 qualified #7 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round against Kosty Ivanof and shut off to a 10.14/67.77. Billy did not run high speeds ever on the NHRA tour. His 6.287/223.32 low qualifier at Indy was his fastest. The 6.197 was at only 218.44 on race day. Where did he run the cited 231?

Notes: Also ran 6.50 at Martin. | Tharp was at the AHRA Winternationals in January, but he lost to eventual winner Don Schumacher in the semifinals. He qualified #2 at Miami-Hollywood for the Funny Car Nationals with a 6.75, but failed to make the finals. The team failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals, but that was more due to horrendous track conditions. Miami held another Funny Car race late in February Tharp qualified #1 for the eight-car show and then beat Lou Azar in the "Fireball Vega" with a 6.84/205.01. In the semifinals, he had a close race with Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler.” Richard's 6.71/211.76 nipped Ron's 6.70/213. He faced "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and he ran a strong 6.70/215.82, but it wasn't strong enough to beat JJ's 6.65/216. In March, the "Max" was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. Richard qualified #1 with a 6.87, but was upset in the first round, by Harlan Thompson's 6.96 to his 7.02. He was back in Miami for another Funny Car race in March where he qualified #4. Tharp lost in the semifinals. The team attended the Hang Ten Funny Car 500 at OCIR, but failed to reach the finals. On April 28 they were at Capitol for an eight-car show. Tharp was one of four cars that ran 6.50s. He made it into the final before losing to Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer Vega. The following day (April 29), was a bad day for the "Blue Max" team. They were at Atco for a race, but Tharp had an oil line break and spray oil onto the headers. The Mustang body went up in frames. Richard bailed out of the flaming inferno at about 30 mph. He was OK other than a hurt shoulder from jumping from the car. Because of the fire, Tharp showed up at Rockingham on May 6th for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships driving a borrowed Mustang from Billy Meyer. The team used its own engine in the car. He qualified #11 for the show with a 7.63, but in the first round, they shocked everybody with an amazing 6.33 (Low ET) at 211.26 that beat Colson's 6.58/221. In round two he slowed to 6.82/221.67, but it was still enough to beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" Charger. Tharp's run came to an end in the semifinals where the Mustang went into a wheelstand and lost to Foster's 6.44/225. He was still using Meyer's car on May 20 when the team showed at Muncie for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Richard qualified #1 with a 6.78 and then beat Danny Miller in the first round. A 6.71/217 got around Safford in round two, but in the semifinals, his 'chute fell off on the line and Foster soloed into the final. In June, Tharp was at York US 30 for a best of three match race against Colson. The "Chi-Town" bunch had problems as they broke a crank in the first race of the match. So, Tharp won the first race with a 7.14 and made two singles with a best of 7.15/203 to win the match. Things didn't go well at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where the "Blue Max" failed to qualify. Tharp was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he was there without a car, so he assisted Foster's team who went on to finish runner-up.

Notes: This was one of the first five funny's to top 200 mph. Making a lot of horsepower to push that big frontal area to those speeds. Sid debuted this car for some test runs at Memphis on August 17. The car had just been finished earlier that week. With some old slicks on the car the ET's weren't the best, but on the second pass he ran 174 and on his last of three runs he turned 179.64. This was on a 184 track record. Best et in '68 was a 7.51. Confirmed 7.76 Jackson Sid raced at an eight-car show at New York on October 13. He singled in the first round, when Ken Poffenberger failed to fire, and another single run of 7.88 got him into the final when Al Hanna was unable to show. In the final, a 7.89 finished second best to Henry Garcia's 7.73 in the Car Shop Camaro. - RH | Photo from the '68 OCIR mfg. meet. Ran 7.80s.

Notes: Larry was at Lions on January 28 for the second half of its Winternationals. Fullerton's 9.27/138.03 qualified for the 32 car show. He lost to Ronnie Runyan in the opening round of eliminations. He was at Lions on June 29 for a double Funny Car show. There were two eight-car fields, with those that didn't qualify quick enough for the first eight fell into a second eight-car field. Fullerton failed to qualify for the quick eight and well as the second eight. He did get into the show as an alternate, but his 9.52/122.95 lost to Gene Modlin's 9.36/129. On August 3, he was at Irwindale for its Gold Cup Championships. He fouled against eventual winner Gas Ronda in the first round and shut off to 10.30-99.53. As far as I know, Fullerton ran SOHC Ford's in his cars until his Maverick switched to an early Hemi in Mid-'70. Larry ran 8.46 at Irwindale.

Notes: John started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #11 and, in the first round, lost to John Collins. John failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.47/221.13 missed the 6.45 cut-off. He managed to get into the show when the #15 qualifier, Larry Fullerton, had a bad fire and could not run in eliminations. His second chance didn't help much as an off-pace 7.23/183.67 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.31/232 in the first round. He made it into the final at the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway, but he was late off the line, and his 6.62 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.66. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.35/231.95 qualified #4. Force then made his way to his first NHRA National event final by running 6.40/223.32 in the opening round over Tom McEwen's 6.43/224. A semifinal 6.52/227.27 advanced when Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" failed to fire. This put him into the final against Kenny Bernstein. Unfortunately, John's transmission broke, and he slowed to 12.27/64.01 while Bernstein picked up his first NHRA Oscar with a 6.45/233. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Columbus for the Springnationals. A 6.34/230.17 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, he improved to 6.27/220.58 to beat Bernstein's 6.36/229. But in round two, he and Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" had a tire-smoking battle that saw Colson's 6.61/225 win out over John's 7.58/126.76. Force was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.24/231.95 qualified #11. He beat Gary Burgin in the first round, and a 6.24/231 beat a tire boiling Tom Hoover in round two. Colson also boiled the hides in the semifinals, and John's 6.29/233 advanced. It was his second NHRA final of the year, and he faced a formidable competitor in Beadle. Force slowed to an off-pace 6.46/212.26 that finished second best to the "Blue Max's" 6.37/232. John was disappointed at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He failed to make the show; his 6.19/230.76 best was good for the fourth alternate. He also was unable to make the show at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. There he was the second alternate with a 6.32/224.46 best. At the NHRA World Finals held at Ontario Motor Speedway, the track was in rough shape. Force managed to qualify #6 with a 6.35/217.39. In the first round, his slower 6.70/222.22 beat Hoover's 6.65/229. A tire-smoking 7.23/217 beat Tom Ridings, who got out of shape in Joe Pisano's car in round two. The semifinals saw smoke city as both he and Tripp Shumake smoked the tires. Tripp recovered first to win with a 6.88/231 over Force's 6.99/218. John finished #8 in the NHRA Funny Car division for '79. Where was the 6.111 run? | I don't know anything about the 6.11, but Force did run 6.19 at a June '79 SIR 16-car AA-BB/FC match race over local racer Paul Luppy in the 1st round. In the final, he beat Jim Dunn with a 6.40/216 to Dunn's quicker 6.36/222. I recorded the cars (and ETs) on a cassette player. - Joe Moore
