Notes: At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at Firebird Raceway, John qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.87/245.23. That was the quickest time he ran that day on his way to winning. A first-round 8.76 advanced when John Martin crossed the centerline and, in the semifinals, an even slower 9.13 got the win when Don Prudhomme also crossed the centerline. In the final, he faced Kenny Bernstein, and after Kenny did his burnout, his reverser failed, giving Collins a solo for the win. John ran 6.66/149.50 to claim his first title of the new year. Collins started his NHRA season at Pomona for the Winternationals. He ran a 5.85/248.48 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." Collins smoked the tires and lost to Lombardo's 5.66/254. He attempted to qualify for an eight-car show in Atlanta on March 10 but was the first alternate. At the Gatornationals, a 5.89/249.03 qualified #15, and in the first round, he picked up to a 5.76/246.71 to beat Jody Smart. In round two, he ran a 5.74/256.11 to beat a tire-smoking Prudhomme. But in the semifinals, Collins had to shut off to a 10.15 due to severe tire shake. He lost to Bernstein. In April at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, John qualified #14 with a 5.99/243.11. He beat Al Segrini in the first round with a 6.02/238.47 before losing to Ed McCulloch in round two. He qualified #15 at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals with a 6.01/243.50. John beat Tom McEwen in the first round with a 5.95/231.60 before losing to Ron Correnti's 5.96/242 with a 6.06/221.45 in round two. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #8 with a 5.83/244. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 5.79/246 before losing to eventual winner Dale Pulde in round two. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. John's 5.97/244.29 qualified #12. A first-round 5.93/241 beat Rick Johnson's quicker 5.90/249, and in the second round, another holeshot 5.98/240.51 beat McEwen's 5.91/245. But in the semifinals, his 5.94/244.96 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.82/241. A week later (June 23), he was at Brainerd for the Crown Auto US Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, Collins' 5.82/240.32 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.82/237 in a close one. Later in a consolation race, John returned and ran another 5.82 at 252.80 to beat Lombardo's 6.08/218. John made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.86/252.38. Both he and McEwen ran 5.86 (Collins at 246.84) in round one, but McEwen got the win light. John set Low ET and Top Speed at NHRA Brainerd at 5.712/257.14 to qualify #1. He finished as a runner-up to John Force at that event. Those were his best times of the year. John went on to win the NHRA Fallnationals at Phoenix.

Notes: This is the Snake's Buttera 'Cuda, built in late '72. Ran in black gel coat for a few races, including the Last Drag Race at Lions (where he was runner-up to Tom McEwen) and the NHRA Supernationals in Ontario. Don qualified #4 at the Lions last drag race with a 6.51. He beat Dale Pulde in M/T's broken Grand Am in round one with another 6.51. In round two, Don went 6.66 to beat Dave Condit's 6.73 in the LA Hooker. In round three, Don ran a consistent 6.67 to defeat Omer Carruthers 6.74. The Tentmaker, the Low ET loser of the second round, replaced Billy Meyer, who was late getting to the line. In the final, McEwen's great 6.39 beat Don's 6.97 in another Snake vs. Mongoose showdown. | The car was eventually painted yellow with Carefree Gum as the primary sponsor. He won Funny Car Eliminator at Indy in '73, running a 6.27 best. In '74, he painted it in US Army colors and won Indy again. - TN

Notes: Neil was at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race in January. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field. An opening round 6.33/218.97 beat Gary Densham, but in round two, he was shut off on the line with an oil leak, advancing Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" into the semifinals. The team then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals and qualified #1 with a 6.32 (Low ET). In the first round, he beat a motor-blowing Gordie Bonin with a 6.46/189.86. He got past a fouling Dale Pulde in the "Eastern Raider" in the second round, and a semifinal 6.72/199.10 beat Billy Meyer in Gene Snow's Vega. In the final, he ran Shirl Greer, and both had some traction problems, but Greer's 7.03/218 beat Neil's 7.08/220.58 for the win. Jim Terry and Leffler were hoping for more good fortune at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Once again, they qualified well, with a 6.333/225.56, taking the #6 position. In the first round, Neil slowed to a 6.88 that lost to Gary Burgin's 6.40. But Gary had crossed the centerline and was disqualified, and Leffler was back in the show. He didn't hang around for long, though, as he lost to a 6.37 pass by Don Prudhomme in round two. At the AHRA Grand American West at OCIR in March, 17 cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car show. Neil qualified #3 with a 6.66. A 7.21/196.50 beat a motor-blowing Bryan Raines in the first round, but his off-pace 7.56 in round two lost to Jim Dunn's 7.08. In May, Prudhomme reset the track record at Fremont with a 6.24, but Neil Leffler and Jim Terry amazed all by snatching it from him with a 6.18. By Indy, Neil was driving the California Charger car.

Notes: Who had the strongest Donovan-powered Funny Car in '75? It had to be a toss-up between Leavitt and John Lombardo. Bill was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with a 6.66 but lost to Billy Meyer driving Gene Snow's Vega in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his low qualifying 6.21 held for Low ET. He made it into the semifinals before he smoked the tires to a 6.72 that lost to Mike Miller's 6.44 in the "Green Elephant." At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bill qualified #14 with a 6.57. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.59/159 that lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.73/211 in the "Blue Max." Shortly after this, he was at the Englishtown Opener, where he got crossed-up against Tom Prock in the first round, and shut off. In April, he was at the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. He qualified #4 but failed to reach the finals. His next stop was at the Cecil County National Open. He made it to the final by beating Tom Raley (George of the Jungle) in the first round, and running an easy single in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Joe Jacono, and Leavitt's troubled 9.50 got the runner-up spot to Jacono's 6.86. Back at Maple Grove for the fifth annual Dutch Classic, Bill went into a huge wheelstand against Al Segrini in the first round, and shut down. Leavitt was at Atco for the CARS Magazine Meet in May. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, he beat Jacono's 7.15/213 with a 7.12/204.08. In the semifinals, his Mustang broke and coasted to a 10.27/86 loss to Segrini's 6.55/200. In June, he went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he failed to qualify for the show. Shortly after that, he beat Jacono in the final to win the New England Funny Car Championships. He qualified #1 for the eight-car show with a 6.75/183, and in round one, his 6.46/205.47 beat Jacono. A semifinal 6.45/205.94 beat Jimmy King's 7.10/197 and moved him into the final. Jacono was to be his final round opponent as he had gotten back into the show on the "break rule" when Dodger Glenn had his throttle stick open in the first round, and ended up smoking the pistons in the "Frantic Ford." Bill really picked up in the final, running a track record 6.28 at 212.26 to claim the victory over Joe's 6.77/182. Later in the month, he went to Suffolk, where he reset the track record to 6.18. Near the end of June, he was back in New England for a Wednesday night race. While he didn't win or reach the final, he was right in the thick of things, running 6.46/197. The month of July didn't start out the greatest for Leavitt as he went up to Canada for the Gold Cup Championships held at Cayuga and lost all three of his races. All the cars were to make three passes, and on Leavitt's first race, his 6.62/215.82 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.59/221. In his second race, he ran 6.84/194.80, but Don Prudhomme beat him to the finish line with a 6.76/205. For the last race, he faced Tommy Grove, but the "Quickie Too" broke on the line. He qualified #10 with a 6.50/216.34 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, he lost fire on the line in the first round, giving Gary Burgin a single into round two. Leavitt won the Connecticut Summer Funny Car Championships. He had a little luck along the way. An opening round 6.63/210.77 beat Jacono's 6.91/193, but in the semifinals, his 7.08/215.31 lost to Segrini's 6.91/166. These two would race again in the final when Kosty Ivanof broke after winning his semifinal race. Bill returned via the "break rule." He beat Segrini's 6.63/209 in the "Black Magic" Vega with a 6.49/215.82. Bill used the same old 1971 Blair chassis with a new body.

Notes: Jenner had nothing to do with this car. It was Ron Hodgson and Verheul. The car was new in 1980. Still, it was the same setup as the 1979 car, and it was an Al Swindahl Chassis Components car. There were two cars. One stayed in Canada and was pulled around to shows. The other one was a national event car. When we ran the tour deal in the NW (Portland, Boise, Edmonton, Seattle), we ran both cars and got twice the money. Frank Hall usually drove the local car. A 6.65/219 beat John Collins' 6.77/216 in the first round, while he beat a tire-smoking Gary Densham in the semifinals. This put Gordie in the final against Kenny Bernstein. As you can tell by the times, traction was poor, and in the final, Bernstein set Low ET with a 6.54/214 to get the victory over Bonin's runner-up 6.68/202 effort. The team then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.18 qualified #6. Unfortunately, they lost to Bryan Raines in the first round. As mentioned, they qualified #6 at Bakersfield for the sixteen-car show. But Bonin broke the tires loose in round one, and his shut off 7.15 run lost to Densham's 6.52/224. Everything lined up the following week (March 15) at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Gordie ran 5.97/245.23 to qualify #3 (tough show!) He ran an easy 6.24/237.46 to advance past a fouling Shirl Greer in the first round. A second-round 6.16/242.58 beat Fuzz Miller and a 6.12/243.24 in the semifinal beat Bernstein. In the final, he was up against Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle." It was a good close race, but Bonin's 6.18/241.28 got the victory over Dale's 6.21/223.

Notes: Custom piece. Rear engine futuristic funny car. Car was based on AMT's anticipated entry into the world of small mass-produced cars for the public. Basically, a kit car was planned, but it never got off the ground beyond the Piranha prototype. In essence, the car was a Catch 22 - too radical to be deemed a funny car and too slow as a top fuel dragster. The car was ill-handling. Astute match racers would rely on their water-cooled entries to burn the car down, resulting in its loss. However, when all went well, no flopper, even the Nicholson Comet, could touch it. Per Chris Martin, Walt Stevens went a confirmed 8.71/187 at Irwindale. Also, 182.64 per Drag News. Was the 8.295 Walt or Connie Swingle (who did run an 8.29 in October 1966)? | Walt was at Tulsa on July 3 for the NHRA Division Four race. He ran a series of exhibition runs, with the best pass being an 8.93/180.58.

Notes: Pulde started the '85 season with the Firebird. At Pomona for the Winternationals, Dale qualified #7 with a 5.83/251.67. A first-round 5.84 beat Billy Meyer and a second round 5.74/252 beat John Force's 5.76/258. He had a little luck in the semifinals when he broke, but his opponent Ed McCulloch fouled and Pulde found himself in the final. He ran Al Segrini for the title, but his 6.02/233.52 finished runner-up to Al's 5.78/227. | At Baylands 2/85 4 Car Funny Car Show, Pulde ran 6.23/211 against Sherm Gunn in Round 1, 5.77/245 against Mike Dunn in Round 2 & ran low ET & Top Speed 5.714/250 to win the event over Don Prudhomme. | At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Dale lasted until the semifinals where he lost to McCulloch due to crossing the centerline. Crewchief Mike Hamby argued hard with IHRA officials saying that the car didn't cross the centerline, but the decision held. At the Gatornationals, a 5.72/244.69 qualified #6. Pulde beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.87/243.63. In round two, a 5.91/252 advanced when McCulloch lost a blower. But in the semifinals, Dale lost to John Lombardo's 5.76/255 in the "Blue Max." At the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, a 5.93/246.71 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in which Pulde smoked the tires and lost. The "old" Firebird proved it could still win by winning the IHRA Pro Am Championships at Rockingham in May. Dale beat Billy Meyer in the final even though they both ran 5.80's. Pulde's was at 254. The last race the Firebird was used at was the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Once again the old car proved itself by qualifying #1 with a 5.74 (Low ET) at 251.81. Unfortunately, Dale smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Don Prudhomme. At the next event, the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, they literally finished the new Buick Somerset in the pits for the race. They went on to qualify first and win the race.

Notes: John bought the car and ran it on his own with Pioneer. He was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 with a 6.75. A first-round 6.79/193 beat Wayne Stoeckel, and in round two, a 6.90/216 beat Dave Hough. But in the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, John qualified #14 at 6.400/225.56. He lost to Denny Savage's 6.39/214 in the first round, with a 6.55/217.91. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. His 6.46 qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field, and a first-round 6.42 beat Les Cassidy's 7.33. Collins slowed to 6.60/182.18 in round two, but it was enough to beat Bryan Raines' 7.19/204. He slowed even more in the semifinals when he smoked the tires hard coming off the line, and his 7.75/134.00 lost to the eventual winner Tripp Shumake's 6.36/231. John was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show, but Billy Meyer had, but his car broke, so Collons took his place in the show. However, it didn't do a lot of good as in the opening round, his 6.37/196.70 lost to John Lombardo's 6.18/224. At the end of April, he competed in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.56/229.00 qualified #7. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.90/175.43 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.56/225. His next stop was at Tulsa on May 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. The track was poor, so his 6.82/211.76 actually qualified #3. But he fell off to 7.44/187.10 in a first-round loss to Billy Graham's 7.04/205. Early in June, Collins was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.74/215.83. He improved to 6.65/197.81 in the first round, to beat Dale Tuter, and in the semifinals, he took a big win when his 6.55 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.62 in the "Blue Max."He faced low qualifier Tom McEwen in the final, and this day proved to be Collins as his 6.46 easily took the victory over the "Goose's" 6.67. He was having so much fun on the AHRA tour that he was back at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio on June 18 for the AHRA Nationals. He didn't do as well there as he had at St. Louis. He qualified #5 with a 6.43/202, which set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Gene Snow. Unfortunately, the race was no contest as John got crossed up and shut down to 7.75/136, which Gene ran 6.44/195 to advance. John was the fifth alternate at NHRA Englishtown with a 6.42 (no speed reported). John qualified #5 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals in August with a 6.43/212.50. But in the opening round of eliminations, he got out of shape against low qualifier Billy Graham and shut off. He was the third alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.263/220.58. But he was the #2 qualifier at 6.134/220.58 at NHRA Ontario. He beat Kenny Bernstein in round one, with a consistent 6.138/221.67 to a shutoff. In round two, he broke on the burnout, sending Denny Savage on to the next round. John did not hit 230 mph in NHRA competition this year. Did he run 234.56 somewhere else?

Notes: January 1971: John Mazmanian clocked the first official, backed-up 220-mph run in a Funny Car at Orange County Int'l Raceway (OCIR). - NHRA | Rich was at OCIR for its opening All-Pro race. He had problems in the first round, and his 8.80 lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn's 7.08. Shortly after that, he was at Lions for the first AHRA Grand American race. Over 30 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Siroonian easily made the show and his opening round 6.78/215.82 beat Tom Hoover. But in round two, he was disqualified for crossing the centerline while racing Gene Snow. On January 24, he made history at the second OCIR race. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.85. In the first round his 6.77/220.58 (first 220 mph FC) beat Jake Johnston. In the semifinals, he ran 6.81/213.77 to beat Stan Shiroma. He went up against Gene Conway in the final and it was no contest. Rich's 6.83/218.97 won when Conway saw that it was pointless and shut down to 8.22/114. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, John Mazmanian had two cars in the field. Larry Reyes drove the other car and qualified it #4 while Siroonian's 7.19/195.65 got the #8 spot. He improved to 7.03/205.41 in the first round, to beat Don Schumacher, but in round two, his 7.11 lost to Johnston's 7.03. The third OCIR All-Pro race was run on February 13. Rich was there and ran over 220 again, but that wasn’t the big news as Don Prudhomme had blasted over 226! Rich ran well, stopping Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" car in the first round, with a 6.85/220.04. He beat Dunn in the semifinals with an engine blowing 6.87/221.13, but was unable to return for his final round showing with Prudhomme. The team did not run at the AHRA Winternationals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Siroonian’s 6.95 qualified #1. He then improved to 6.93 (Low ET) before losing to Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" in the semifinal. Rich shut off to 7.20/168.88 while Condit advanced with a 7.13. They also did not make the trip to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but they were at OCIR the following week (March 27) for the final All-Pro race. Rich’s 6.87/216.86 qualified #2, but in the opening round against Gary Burgin, he had problems and shut down to 11.21/62.32. We need to confirm the 6.64.

Notes: The "Chi-Town" bunch needed a new driver for '80 as their driver, Pete Williams, left at the end of '79. Austin Coil contacted Simon Menzies for the job, but Simon was unable to tour, so he recommended Frank Hawley. Coil decided to give Frank a try. Hawley went to Chicago to audition for the job, and his first race was to be a best of three match against Kenny Safford at US 30, Gary, Indiana. He won the match three straight. Since he still didn't have a fuel funny car license, Safford was the first to sign his license. After this, Hawley asked Coil if he had the job. Austin replied, "for another week." This continued for the next two years until they won the NHRA World Championship in '82. Then he was hired. The team ran at Union Grove a lot. Frank made it into the semifinals at the Olympics of Drag Racing in May before losing to Don Prudhomme. At the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove, Hawley finished runner-up to Tom Hoover. The team attempted to qualify at the PHR Championships, but a best of 6.56 left them as the seventh alternate for the show.

Notes: Dominic qualified #7 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.45/263.64. In the opening round, his 5.48/258.76 lost to Scott Kalitta's 5.46/264. Shortly after that (July 1), he was at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals. Thirteen FCs showed up and attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Santucci's 5.91/254.50 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, his opponent, low qualifier Jerry Caminito broke, and Dominic's tire-shaking 5.99/253.74 advanced. Richard Hartman smoked the tires against him in the semi-final, and Santucci ran 5.68/262.26 to win. He faced Chuck Etchells in the final, and Santucci set both Low ET and Top Speed to win at 5.65/263.79. The speed was also a new track record. The following week, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.44/272.64 qualified #10. He lost to eventual winner Etchells in the first round. He was at Atco Raceway in August for the IHRA Eastern Nationals. In the first round, he ran Carl Ruth, who was debuting his new '56 Ford. Dominic's 5.47/270.04 beat Ruth's 6.05. He broke against Etchells in the semi-final. Also in August, Dominic won the Polaroid US All-Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown, defeating Richard Hartman in the final. He also ran well at Maple Grove in September for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where he qualified #9 at 5.36/271.73. But once again, Etchells stopped him in round one. A week later (September 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships. He qualified second, and in round one, his 5.87/217.77 took out Bobby Lagana. He lost to Freddie Neely in the semi-final. Dom also ran 280 at Epping on September 9 and 273.88. He won the IHRA Empire Nationals at Empire International Raceway in 1990.

Notes: Rick was the second alternate at NHRA Gainesville at 6.270/208.81. He qualified #1 with a 6.07/230.17 at Englishtown on May 4 for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. Rick lasted until the semifinals, where he shut off to an 8.54 that lost to Bruce Larson's 6.71. The following week (May 10), he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. Six cars made two runs each, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race against Al Segrini, he got out of shape and shut off. He again got crossed up in his second race and lost to Gary Burgin. At the NHRA Springnationals, he ran a 6.24/225.56 to qualify #12. He beat John Force in the first round, 6.19/236.22 to 6.29/235.60, but in round two, his 6.25/236.22 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.22/227.84. Rick qualified #2 with a 6.12/222.77 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Rick lasted until the semifinals, where the Mustang broke against Roy Harris. He qualified #10 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals at 6.129/241.28, but his 6.251/234.98 in the first round lost to Burgin's 6.12/238.09. In August, he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.28/234.37 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He lost to Force in the first round, 6.158/239.36 to 6.205/231.36. Johnson ran really well in New England for the NHRA Division 1 final on August 17. His 6.13/237.46 qualified #2 behind Burgin's 6.04. These two would work their way to the final. Rick beat Kosty Ivanof in round one with a 6.16/232.55, and in the semifinals, his 6.10/235.60 took out John Speelman. On his way to the final, Gary had run a best of 6.01 (Low ET). The two had an interesting final, with Burgin shutting off to 11.33/71, but Rick thinking he had the win wrapped up, got out of shape and crossed the centerline, disqualifying himself. Rick was the 13th alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.33/231.36. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. (This was the former Gary Burgin "Pete Rose" car). Notes: Colson qualified #2 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a career-best 6.00/240.64. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. At the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle, a 6.14/234.98 qualified #5, but he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Nick Harmon. His season ended on a high note when he won the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. He had announced his retirement shortly before the race and then went out and qualified #1 with a 6.11/238.09 (Top Speed). He beat Dale Armstrong in the first round. In round two, his 6.21 beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.30, while a 6.41/231.36 advanced in the semifinals when Roy Harris crossed the center line. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle was running well, setting Low ET at 6.06. But in the final, he had trouble and shut off, giving Colson's 6.28/230.17 the victory. Ron did well in the NHRA points standings, finishing third for the season.

Notes: Dick Poll was hired to drive the Gas Ronda Mustang for '70. Not much news was made by the team, and it faded late in '70. Gas Ronda ran the Irwindale New Year's Day race and beat Dave Beebe in the first round with a 7.43/196.06. A second-round wheelstand ended his chances against Johnny Wright. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on January 4, Gas qualified eighth with a 7.60, but he blew his transmission, and non-qualifier Don Schumacher took his place in the race. At the second OCIR All-Pro race, Ronda was one of 27 drivers attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he failed to better the 7.57 "bump." On January 25 at the AHRA Winternationals, Ronda took his last ride in a Funny Car during qualifying; a transmission exploded near the end of a run, and he was severely burnt. He had third-degree burns to over 30% of his body. Ronda was taken to Orange Country Medical Centre. He survived, but that was it for Fuel Funny Cars for Gas Ronda. Jim Tice chose to hold a benefit race at Beeline Dragway on April 11 to help raise funds for Ronda. Tice's words, "It is inconceivable to me that a man that has made the contribution to our sport over the last ten years such as Gas Ronda has, should possibly wind up his career with only unpaid bills to show for it." Contributions poured in; the first was from Kelsey Producy=ts, who was not even a sponsor of Ronda's. Ed Pink donated to the cause, as did Anton Racing Apparel, Logghe Competition, Quaker State, Dow Chemicals, B&M Transmissions, Goodyear, Cyclone Automotive, Conelec Fuel Pump, Bill Hielscher and Associates, JR Headers, and Carter Carburetors. It was good to see such an outpouring of support for Ronda. | Ronda retired after a career-ending fire at the AHRA Winter Nationals at Beeline Dragway, Arizona. This occurred in January 1970. The photo shows the car's '69 iteration before the grill was updated to 1970 specs. - RT

Notes: The "Tennessee Bo-Weevil" had been a fixture at the NHRA US Nationals for 17 years when this car was built for the '72 season. Car owner Ray Godman spent $18,000 to build this 'Cuda. It had nothing but the best parts: a Woody Gilmore (RCE) 119" chassis, a KB Hemi, and Don Kirby paint. The Hemi used a stroker crank with M/T rods holding Black 5.6:1 pistons. A Lunati flat tappet cam was used. Jentzen Porting Service prepared the heads. The intake manifold, blower drive, and headers were all by Cragar, while Air Research built the GMC 6/71. Most funny cars by this time were running Enderle injection, but the "Bo-Weevil" was still using a Hilborn unit. The motor burned 98% nitro. The Lenco transmission fed the power back to a Halibrand rear end. Kenny Youngblood did the lettering. Preston Davis was at Lakeland in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.06. He had an easy first-round, and then in round two, Larry Arnold fouled against him. In the semifinal, Davis lost to Dale Pulde, who was driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Early in April, he was at Chandler Raceway in Indiana for a four-car show against Pulde, Clare Sanders in the "Chi-Town Hustler," and Gary Henderson driving the "Super Duster." I have no times for the race, but the final came down to Pulde and Sanders. Davis won the NHRA Division 2 Opener on April 9 at Phenix City. His final round 7.25/205.49 beat Paul Aray. Later in the month, he was at Blaney for another four-car match. Once again, he ran well but failed to reach the final. Preston qualified #6 at Indy at 6.547/223.88 but crossed the center line against Al Hanna in round one, and lost. He ran 6.66/213.27 at the Tulsa PRA race (where Preston was runner up to McEwen's 6.61). Another amazing team that somehow made both races on the same weekend. Preston also ran 6.619/215.31 at NHRA Amarillo 1972. Preston had a big wheelstand at the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario, and when the car landed, the steering was knocked out. He ended up hitting the wall on a qualifying run. We need confirmation and location of the 6.46.

Notes: Kenny's first year with Budweiser sponsorship. He crashed the brand new car at the press conference. Kenny started the '80 season with a runner-up finish to Don Prudhomme at the OCIR Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #2 with a 6.06/233.16. He lost to Dale Pulde when he hit the guardrail in the first round. He got out of shape, crossed the centerline, and hit the rail. He was OK, but the Arrow body was wrecked. Bernstein went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet but failed to reach the finals. A 6.06 qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but he slept in the first round, and his 6.18/232.55 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.24/229. A week later (March 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He was at Rockingham on April 20 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.12/228 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. In his first-round race against Billy Meyer, Bernstein accidentally shirted back into low gear, and he lost to Meyer's 6.15. The following week, he qualified #5 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, running 6.11/241.93 for the spot. It was an eight-car show, and by qualifying #5, it set up a first-round race with low qualifier Paul Smith in Larry Coogle's "Sting" Firebird. Paul won the race when Bernstein smoked the tires and shut off. On May 4, he was runner-up to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at the rain-delayed IHRA Dixie Nationals. At Bristol for another rain-delayed event, the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.21. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.59 lost to eventual winner Meyer's 6.44. The "Budweiser King" wasn't running that well at the NHRA Springnationals, only qualifying #10 with a 6.22/232.55. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. He also lost in the first round at the next NHRA race, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. Kenny qualified #7 in the eight-car show, but his 6.57/225.00 in the first round lost to Beadle's 6.29/226. He then went to Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas, for the AHRA Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.33 qualified #5, setting up a first-round encounter with low qualifier Prudhomme. It was a close race, but the "Snake's" 6.19 beat Kenny's 6.20. He won the NHRA Division 2 race at Blaney, beating John Speelman in the final with a 6.43/233.16 (Top Speed and a new track record). He earlier had set Low ET at 6.37. At Englishtown, he qualified poorly, only running 6.14/237.46 for the #11 spot, and in the first round, he lost to Prudhomme. Early in August, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.52, but in round one, he smoked the tires to a shut-off 12.40 that lost to Roy Harris' 6.30/236. Kenny was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race. He ran well, making it into the final against future crew chief Dale Armstrong, but he had problems and shut off, giving Dale's 6.20/231 the victory. Kenny was disappointed at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, where his 6.15 best failed to qualify for the race that had a 6.10 "bump." Ray Alley then came on board to help with the car for the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle. Kenny was the first to tell you that Alley "knew his stuff" as the car responded by running a career-best 6.002 at 239.36 to qualify low for the field. However, things didn't go so rosy in eliminations, as Bernstein's 6.61/214.28 in the first round lost to Armstrong's 6.62/180. Kenny wrapped up the year at the NHRA Finals in Ontario. He qualified #13 at 6.251/224.90 (243.90?) and bat Dale Pulde in round one, 6.585/220.04 to 6.79/207. In round two, he lost to eventual winner Ron Colson, 6.21/233 to 6.304/227.84.

Notes: John started the '86 season with last year's Corvette, but he started running the Cavalier by the Gatornationals in March. In its first NHRA National event, John qualified the car #5, and in round one, a 5.81/247.38 beat Tim Grose's 5.97/209. In round two, John's 5.91/212.56 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.66/256. He won the Coor's 32-car Funny Car show at Firebird in April. He ran 5.92/237.46 over Billy Meyer and a Low ET shot of 5.71/252.10 to beat John Martin. In the final, a 5.76/243.90 won over Johnny West's 5.96/249 in the "Hawaiian." On April 20, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.75/252.95 qualified #4. He beat Martin in the first round before getting out of shape in round two and crossing the centerline. He took another win when he won the Bakersfield May meet. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.76/243.90. A first-round 5.80/245.90 beat West's 5.84; in the semifinals, another 5.76/245.90 beat Meyer's 5.78/253. In the final, he ran Martin. Force took the victory with a 5.92/251.39 over Martin's 6.01/229. The next NHRA race on the schedule was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge's State Capitol Raceway. John set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.66/258.17. A first-round 6.07/237.96 beat John Lombardo's 6.32/244 in the "Blue Max." But in round two, Force again crossed the centerline, giving Mark Oswald the win. Photo from Indy 1986. Listed MPH from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. John's best NHRA National event times in the Cavalier were 5.647/258.17 at Englishtown and Baton Rouge. Where did John run 264 mph?

Notes: Gary started the '83 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where traction was poor. A 7.21 qualified #4, and he beat John Force in the first round with an 11.61. In the semifinal, he ran a 7.90 to beat Brian Raines "Impulse." In the final, an 11.13 was good for runner-up honors as Don Prudhomme beat him with a 7.00. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He led qualifying on Thursday with a 6.09/238.72. On Friday, he came back out and ran 6.022/243.24, qualifying #3. Gary picked up his pace to a 5.94/240.64 that stopped Billy Meyer in the first round. A second-round 6.20/237.46 got around Kenny Bernstein. He met with Tom Anderson in the semifinal, who used a 5.97/236 to stop Burgin's 6.18/234.98. He ran really well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where a 5.87/240.64 qualified second behind Mark Oswald's similar 5.87/254. In the first round, he set Low ET at 5.78 at 238.72 while beating Bernstein's 5.94/245. In the second round, he shut off and lost against Anderson. Gary then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified second. He lasted until the semifinal before smoking the tires and losing to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." OCIR held its 64 Funny Car show in April. All cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Gary's 6.35/230.76 lost to Prudhomme's 6.13/222 in his first race, and in the second, his 6.18/231.95 beat Gary Densham. Unfortunately, neither of his ETs was good enough to advance into the final. He then went to Green Valley Raceway on April 10 for the NHRA Division Four race. Normally, by '83, Fuel FCs were not part of the program. But the track wanted a full show of TF and FCs. It was an eight-car show, and Gary ran 6.29/225.56 in the opening round to beat Johnny West, and a 6.22/233.76 in the semifinal beat Tom Hoover's better 6.17/224. In the final, both he and Frank Hawley, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," slipped and slid down the track, with Burgin getting the victory with a 6.92/221.13. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17, where he had lots of problems and could run no better than 13.54/46.02. The following week (April 24), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. A 6.09 qualified #5, but he lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. Englishtown held its Springnationals race sponsored by K-Mart, and eight cars were competing. He won his first-round race with a 6.27/221.13 when R.C. Sherman's Arrow broke. In the semifinal, he ran 6.11/240.00 over Tim Grose's 6.39/222. In the semifinal, he faced the "Custom Body" car driven by Rick Johnson. In this race, Burgin was the underdog as Rick had run his first "5" in the other semifinal race. The two had a good race, but Burgin's 6.30/234.37 finished runner-up to Rick's 6.25/240. He then went to Maple Grove for its Coca-Cola Spring Championships. His seven-cylinder 6.33 qualified #1 for the eight-car field, and with rain looming, the two Low ET qualifiers met in the final. Burgin lost a blower belt, but his 6.53/220.04 still got the win over Scott Weney's 6.57/222. He did not go to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.13/236.84 qualified #15. In the opening round, his 6.27/235.60 advanced over Meyer's troubled 9.12/83. A second-round 6.26/233.16 dropped Anderson's 6.29/243. He faced Beadle in the semifinal, and Gary's 6.42/171.75 lost to Beadle's 6.10/228. Shortly after that, he won the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race at Englishtown. He had run as well as 6.19/231.95 before he defeated Al Segrini in the final. Both had traction issues, and Burgin won with an 8.42/94.74. He made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car show with a 6.30 best. Later in the month (July), he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but his 6.23 best failed to qualify there as well. He skipped going to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. In mid-August, Burgin was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #13 with a 6.43/214.79. He improved to 6.27/229.00 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough to beat Pulde's 6.06/230. Brainerd was the next stop on the NHRA schedule, and Gary ran 6.04/241.28 to qualify #11. He lost to Anderson's 5.88 in the opening round. This was not one of Burgin's better years, and it showed at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, where he failed to qualify. Photo from 1982 GVRC match race. Assuming this was the Mustang, rebodied. We need to validate. We need to enter other NHRA national event times, but it looks like a best speed of 243.24 on the national event circuit. Where did the 254.23 occur? Iversen "shoehorn" body.

Notes: Gary's one-year sponsor from Pete Rose Candy Bars. Burgin started the season by qualifying #2 at the AHRA Winternationals and going to the final, where he lost to Tom Hoover. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.37/230 qualified #15. He lost to Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round. The NHRA Gatornationals had Burgin run 6.35/238.09 to qualify #10. In round one, he smoked the tires to a 7.72/125 loss to Raymond Beadle's 6.21/239 in the "Blue Max." The following week(March 18), he went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car but failed to reach the final. He also ran at Atlanta Dragway for the IHRA Dixie Nationals in April but failed to reach the final. In May, he won the "Jungle Jim" Memorial (Dutch Classic) race at Maple Grove. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.28/233.16 before stopping Bruce Larson's 6.42/219 in the final with a 6.33/231.36. He then won his second NHRA career race at Columbus for the Springnationals. A 6.19/237.46 qualified #7. in the opening round, Burgin's 6.41/233.16 defeated Tom McEwen's 6.53/214. A round two 6.35/235.60 beat Hoover's 6.40/237. Al Segrini's car caught fire on the line in the semifinal, so Burgin soloed with a 6.51/233. He faced Beadle in the final, and Gary's 6.49/239.36 got the victory over the "Max's" 6.69/207. Shortly after that, he was at Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. Unfortunately, Burgin broke in the first round, against Beadle. Gary won the NHRA Springnationals this year. He ran well on the NHR tour, but not earth-shattering. His best numbers were from qualifying #14 at Indy with a 6.120/244.56. Is this the Monza, rebodied?

Notes: Grose failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Tim was at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.32/207.37. He fouled against Dale Pulde in the first round. He went to the final NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend, where his 6.15 (Low ET) qualified #1. Tim got to the final and grabbed the win with a 6.23/227.27 over Len Imbrogno's 6.29/223. Grose failed to qualify at the NHRA World Finals, but he finished 21 in the NHRA season-long points standings. Division 3 Champ. Photo from Pomona, CA, 1979.
