Notes: Debuted the 1969 blown Logghe Nova at Detroit Dragway and set the track MPH record at 197 (with a 427 Chevy motor). Two weeks later the car went end over end at Englishtown and the Army decided I should crew chief a M1A1 tank instead of race cars. End of story. - Dick Abbott

Notes: Harrison was probably best known for setting Low ET (6.54) at Indianapolis way back in '71, driving Mickey Thompson's Mustang. He was a hired driver driving many cars. In June, he drove John Martin's Corvette at Fremont for an eight-car show. Harrison set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at 6.24/234.37. Only seven cars showed, so he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one and advanced with an easy pass. He got another solo in the semifinals when his would-be opponent, Rodney Flournoy, had no car. Rodney had won his first-round race, but the car went up in flames and burnt to the ground. Henry's 7.08/142.63 advanced. He faced Sherm Gunn in the final, and his 6.44/225.99 got the victory over Gunn's off-pace 7.06/193. He was also at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and considering that drivers such as Tom McEwen, John Force, and Gordie Bonin failed to qualify, Henry's #6 qualifying 6.33/209.33 looked pretty good. Unfortunately, another 6.33/209 in the first round, lost to Raymond Beadle's close 6.32/230 in the "Blue Max." In August, he was at Bonneville Raceway for the AHRA Western Nationals. In the first round, an off-pace 6.78/212.77 lost to eventual winner John Collins' 6.40/211. Harrison qualified #1 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 23 with a 5.98. Spokane's elapsed time and speed clocks were said to be automatically adjusted for the track's 2,430-foot elevation. In the opening round of eliminations, he lost to Mike Miller. A week later (August 31), he was again a low qualifier with a 6.09 at Portland International for the AHRA Northwest Nationals. The car broke in the first round, and he lost to Bonin. At Fremont, he again out-qualified some "name" drivers at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified on the "bump" with a 6.13/233.76. Some "names" that failed to qualify included Don Prudhomme, Kenny Bernstein, Force, and McEwen. Eventual winner Mike Dunn, driving the "Hawaiian," stopped Harrison's 6.24/233.76 in the first round with a 6.16/230. The car continued to show it had power at the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Harrison continued to out-qualify the favorites, running 6.11/239.36 for the #13 spot in the field. In the first round, he improved to 5.983/241.93, but he was late and lost to Beadle's 6.00/224. | That 5.98 loss to the Blue Max was something to see. In the same round Dale Armstrong went 5.89 in the Speed Racer. Lidtke and Harrison would throw in again in '83 on the 5.8- second Lidtke-Harrison-Lidtke Trans Am. The Jam-Air, with Gary Southern, was absent at the '82 Winters. - Joe Moore

Notes: Speed run at IHRA Ennis in 10/88 was the fastest AA/FC speed of the decade. Photo from 1988 Bristol, Tenn. Scott was at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals in August. He qualified #6 with a 5.395/270.43 and in the opening round, beat Johnny West in the "Hawaiian” with a 5.399/270.67. But in round two, he went into a wheelstand a shut off against Brad Tuttle. Shortly after that, he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. He qualified #4 for the eight-car field, but smoked the tires in the first round, and shut off to a 6.58/159 loss to eventual winner Mark Oswald's 5.55/266 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. At Sonoma, for the NHRA California Nationals, his 5.439/271.90 qualified #3. Went 5.434/271.32 at NHRA Indy. Went 5.483/276.24 at NHRA Ennis Spring. Low ET and number 1 qualifier at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at 5.514. Went 5.490/263.62 at the NHRA Summernationals.

He improved to 5.241/280.54 in the first round, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to Tony Pedregon's 5.14/296. Gainesville: 5.122/290.22 Q6. Lost R1 to Paul Smith, 5.23/274 to 5.813/188.00. This was a clash of two good racers who rarely got out of the first round this year. Unfortunately for Dean, Hoover won one of his few opening rounds with his best ET of the season. Pomona Finals: 5.050/289.20 Q7. Lost R1 to Okazaki, 5.19/299 to 5.550/254.52. Like Hoover, one had to wonder what caused the inconsistency for some teams this year. Inconsistent clutch discs?

Notes: Tim ran his Corvette at Pomona and Gainesville, but he debuted his new Trans Am at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #4. A first-round 5.94/241.28 beat John Collins, and he got past the second round to face Billy Meyer in the semis. A 5.99/243.90 lost to eventual winner Meyer's 5.88/247. He qualified for the tough eight-car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. That was good; what was bad was that he qualified in the #5 spot, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Oswald, which Grose lost. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals on June 10. Tim qualified #6 with a 5.90/247.25. He fouled in the first round, against Gary Southern. Grose then went to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. A 6.01 qualified #6. He lasted until the second round before losing to Dale Pulde. In Canada, for the NHRA Grandnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.87/253.52 but failed to reach the finals. The Summernationals at Englishtown was NHRA's next stop, and once again, Tim qualified easily, running a 5.81 for the #7 spot in the show. He beat Dale Barlet in the first round, but smoked the tires in round two and lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Tim's best times with the Trans am were a great 5.782/257.87 run at NHRA Brainerd. He had run 5.780 in Gainesville with the Corvette. | Ran at an Oct. 5th '84 Funny Car match race at Carlsbad. The race featured a 'Goose/Grose final. Grose went 5.93 and 5.89 to win. Chi-Town was there (6.05) Dunn's new Mustang, Densham, Checker Auto Parts Citation, Amos Satterlee the CC, and Tom Ridings in the Lidtke Trans Am. - Joe Moore

Notes: Dale qualified #4 at the season opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona with a 5.084/288.64. He lost to Gary Bolger in the first round. At the next NHRA event, the Quality Care Nationals, a 5.14/290.69 qualified #6. Another 5.14 at 285.44 beat Gordie Bonin's 5.42/278 in the first round, and a consistent 5.15/282.48 beat K.C. Spurlock in round two. Unfortunately, he lost to John Force in the semifinals. Best NHRA times were 5.084/292.01 (at NHRA Ennis Fall).

Notes: Jim Robbs of RFI backed the car. After driving for Mike Burkhart, Mart Higginbotham stepped out on his own for '71 with this Ramchargers Hemi-powered Vega. Don Long built the 118" chassis, and the body came from J&E. The engine used M/T rods and pistons and a Crower cam. A 30% overdriven Air Research blower sat on a Cragar manifold, and the 80% nitro was fed to the engine by Enderle injection. The power was transferred to the 5.14 Detroit Locker rear by a two-speed Lenco transmission. | This was Mart's most successful season. It was a welcome change after attempting to run the Chevy engine with little success in '70. The new car took a little time to come around, but that was expected. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he did much better at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. A 7.20 qualified #5 among the "seeded" entries, and an easy 7.60 in the opening round got around a crossed-up Gary Densham. He improved to 7.03/195.22 in an all-Vega battle with Tom Prock in round two and a third-round 6.90/204.54 beat Don Schumacher's 7.01/198. His run ended in the semifinals, where Gene Snow unleashed Low ET and Top Speed (6.84/214) on him. Higginbotham's next good run came at the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #6 with a 7.03. A 7.05 in round one, advanced when Bill Flynn's car lost fire. Mart really picked up in round two, running a 6.82/205.94 over Leonard Hughes' 6.92, but a semifinal 7.17 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.02 in the "Super Duster." He then went to West Palm Beach for the third AHRA Grand American race. Mart qualified #1 with a 6.82 (Low ET) at 208.80. He then ran a 7.21 "odd-lot" solo. Round two saw Higginbotham's 6.96/199.54 turn back Dick Harrell's 7.36/200, and in the semifinals, his 6.94 beat Dale Pulde in the Mickey Thompson Pinto. In the final, he was to face Snow, but Snow's two-speed transmission broke, so Mart soloed for the win with a 6.97/208.80. Until this time, the car had been running a stock-stroke 426, but after this race, Mart also went the stroker route and his times improved to 6.66/217. He was running a lot of match races with the car, and on May 8, he was at Wichita for a best of three against Dave Condit's "L. A. Hooker." Unfortunately, Mart lost that match. Shortly after that, he was at Lebanon Valley for an eight-car show where he finished runner-up to Gary Bolger. On May 23, AHRA held its Southern Nationals at Green Valley Raceway. Art ran really well, hitting a first-round 6.96/203.60 over Vic Cecelia in Charlie Proite's ailing Challenger. A second-round 7.09/169.17 beat John Dekker, but a troubled 7.68/161.87 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner Snow's 6.98/203. The following week (May 28), he won over a sixteen-car field at US 30. A final round 6.76 beat Tom Hoover's 6.96 for the victory. Mart lost early at Baton Rouge for the AHRA Grand American held there on June 6. It was then off to Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. It was a tough field to get into. Mart sat on the "bump" on Saturday with a 7.23, but he improved to a 7.09 to stay in the show. But in the first round, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline against Henry Harrison, who was driving Mickey Thompson's Mustang. He stopped off at Blaney for a best of three match against Warren Gunter's "Durachrome" VW. Mart won all three races and ran the track's first "six," a 6.97.

Notes: Alley literally tore the roof off his three-week-old Charger at Irwindale on August 25. According to the 9/01/67 National Dragster, this occurred when his throttle stuck during a qualifying pass, resulting in a wide-open run that ended a full 1/8th mile past the finish line. He turned Low ET of 8.19 of the event in the process and returned to participate in eliminations, topless. - RT | Ran 8.62 and 8.77 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Ran 8.19 at Irwindale. - DC | This car took a long time to build. Alley had wanted to have the first Charger Funny Car, but problems held the car back and it actually took 18 months to get finished. The frame was designed by Ray and Bob Brown, but the final welding was done by Don Long. The wheelbase was 118" and it used an Olds rear axle with 3.90 gears. Of course, Alley’s company, Engine Masters, built the TorqueFlite transmission. The engine was an early 354 Hemi built by Dave Cole. Ed Pink line-bored the block. The crank was a standard Chrysler unit. M/T rods and Venolia 7:1 pistons were used. Chet Herbert supplied the cam. The heads were ported and polished by Lockerman with stock 2" Chrysler intake valves. The exhausts were 2 1/8" Donovans. Tom Jobe of the Surfers built the blower running at 28% overdrive. Hilborn injection sat up top. The car was run on 70% nitro and Ray was willing to tip the can if needed. The car weighed 2,200 lbs. and within weeks of being done he ran early times of 8.46/179.98. Ray was at Fontana on Jan 7 for an eight-car show. It was a hard show to get into as 42 cars attempted to qualify for the eight positions. Ray beat the "Whinemaker" in the first round, with an 8.11/180.72. In the semifinal, he ran an easy 9.08/146.57 when Marv Eldridge fouled. In the final, he was up against "Dyno" Don Nicholson. Ray ran an 8.52/178.21 for the runner-up money as Don's 8.08/172 took the win.

Notes: Ran 6.34 at Pomona, 6.45 at Gainesville, 6.25 at Columbus, 6.31 at Englishtown, 6.15 at Indy, 6.26 at Detroit, 6.21 at Ontario. | Tom qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.34. Unfortunately, he lost to Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," in the first round. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.45 qualified #8, and once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Bob Pickett. He was at Rockingham on May 1 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Dale Pulde. Shortly after that, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.98/138. In the first round, he improved to 6.43/223.88 to beat Al Bergler's 6.67/213. A 6.49/203.61 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Pulde who won with a 6.23/235. Tom went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event held in late May. On May 29, 22 cars ran the first-round, with only the four Low ET cars advancing into the semifinals. Prock didn't run quick enough to make the final four. The following day (May 30), they ran again, and this time six cars would advance. Prock almost made it as both he and Denny Savage ran 6.47, but Prock's was a tick slower at 6.476, and once again, he sat out the final eliminations. A week later (June 5), he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There, his 6.50/226.14 qualified #6. He ran 10.10 to advance in the first round, when Pickett lost a driveshaft and, in the semifinals, he ran a good 6.53/213.32, but it wasn't good enough as he lost to the eventual winner Beadle’s 6.46/210. The team's next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.29/228.42 qualified #10, but Prock lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. A week later (June 19) found the "Detroit Tiger" at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Prock qualified #5 6.62, but he ran a sub-par 6.97 in round one, that lost to Donnie Plunkett's 6.91. He did better at Union Grove on July 4th for the IHRA Summernationals. There, his 6.37 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. An opening round 6.63/204.54 beat Shirl Greer's 6.65/199. In the semifinals, Prock's 6.52/206.89 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.34/214.

Notes: Gary Clapshaw had a good year in '95. He won his first NHRA National event and ran well throughout the year. He started his season at Bakersfield in January for its warm-up race. Gary was the third quickest Funny Car, and he bettered the previous career-best of 5.24 with a great 5.12/255.75. A large part of the credit had to go to his new crew chief, Mike Kloeber. A week later (Feb. 5), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7 with a 5.24/244.89. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.23/274.97 beat Whit Bazemore's 5.41/258. But in round two, he lost to the eventual winner Cruz Pedregon. He had the only Mustang-bodied car to qualify at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where a 5.24/277.09 got him the #7 spot in the show. Unfortunately, the car's fuel system problems and Gary could not show for his first-round race against Jack Wyatt. Clapshaw would probably rather forget the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. He ended up as the first alternate with a 5.62/251.04 best. He also failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He did not run at Rockingham for the Winston Invitational event, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #4 with a 5.21/289.85. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.46/228.31 beat Dean Skuza's 5.54/279. A second-round 5.20/269.46 defeated Whit Bazemore's 5.36/272. But in the semifinals, he faced John Force, and he smoked the tires to a 14.27/75.01 loss. Then came the highlight of his season. He went to Memphis early in May for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. A 5.29/289.38 qualified in the middle of the field (#8). He and Kenji Okazaki had a great race in round one, that saw both drivers run 5.37 (Clapshaw at 278.72), with Gary getting the win light. The run came at a price as he blackened a crankshaft and the crew installed another for round two. There, his 5.53 stopped Jim Blake. He picked up the pace in the semifinal with a 5.31/251.11 to beat Al Hofmann. This put him in the final against Gary Densham. Neither had won an NHRA national event, so it was bound to be a first-time winner. As luck would have it, Clapshaw's 5.33/285.99 gave him the win over Densham's 5.45/276. Best NHRA national event times were 5.07 at Ennis and 295 at the World Finals.

Notes: After driving for Mickey Thompson for several seasons, Pickett went on his own in 1979. Bob was at the AHRA Winternationals but failed to reach the finals. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 at 6.229/233.16, but he broke against Tom Prock in the first round. At the Gatornationals, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot at 6.330/229.59, meaning he had to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the first round. Sure enough, the "Snake" beat him, 6.44/228 to 6.650/221.13. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.40/233.76. A 6.55/222.77 lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 6.36/234 in round one. Bob qualified #11 at Columbus at 6.27/228.42 and lost to Tom Hoover in round one, 6.33/231 to 14.59/50. Bob qualified #13 at Englishtown at 6.25/232.55 and again had issues in round one, falling to Jim Adolph, 6.28/231 to 11.86. Bob qualified on the bump at Indy at 6.130/230.76, but round one blues set in again, and Pat Foster took a 6.25/235 to 11.22/72 decision. Bob was the fifth alternate at the Ontario Finals (no time reported, but no quicker than 6.56).

Notes: Second of two Mustangs to replace the Pete Bagnard car that drove into a lake earlier in the season. On August 5, Billy was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.62 and beat Cogo Eads in the first round. A second-round 6.50/212.77 beat Don Schumacher's 6.77, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Don Prudhomme. At the fourth Division 5 race at Minnesota, Billy lost fire on the line in the first round against Art Ward. Meyer was at Tulsa for the AHRA National Challenge race on August 26. It was a 32 car field, and he ran a 6.60/216.86 to qualify #9. A first-round 6.64/214 beat Tom Hoover, while in the second round, he beat low qualifier Gerry Glenn with a 6.63/218. He lost to Jim Nicoll in round three. The following week (September 3), he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. It was a challenging field to make as the sixteen-car show had almost 50 cars trying to get in. Billy's 6.504/219.51 just made the show on the "bump." Unfortunately, a first-round 6.696/210.77 failed to get past Ed McCulloch's 6.40/222. He won the NHRA Points race at Beech Bend on September 8. In the first round, he soloed with a 6.48/196 when Shirl Greer lost fire. In the semifinal, his 6.39/210 defeated Jackie Price. In the final, he set Low ET with a 6.35/209.79 pass over a tire-smoking Al Bergler. He got a semifinal finish at the IHRA US Open, losing to Pat Foster in Barry Setzer's Vega. Billy made it to the semis of the next IHRA event as well, the All American Nationals at Bristol on October 14. In round two, he beat Dale Pulde with a 6.97/210.28, but a 6.81/180.36 lost to Dale Emery in the semifinals. Billy wrapped up the season at the NHRA Finals at Ontario. He qualified #15 with a 6.507/218.44. He lost fire against Frank Hall in round one.

Notes: Armstrong followed the path least traveled by relying on a strong-running 352" small block Chevy for power. He claimed to never deviate from a diet of 20 percent nitro (in alky). The combo was good enough to set low qualifying time (8.33) for funnies at the AHRA Championship at Lions in late July 1966. - RT | Armstrong ran this car three different ways in 1966: injected fuel, blown fuel coupe, and blown fuel as a roadster, pictured here. This is the car he ran in 1965. In 1967, he stretched the now roofless Chevy II. In 1968, the car was run by Ron Lorenz and John Wright. - DD | On November 27, at the Lions East-West Meet, Dale put Frank Pedregon's Chrysler Hemi in the car. He ran 9.32 in the opening round to beat Eddie Marcek's Mustang, and he got out of shape in round two, where he lost to Ronnie Runyan.

Notes: Car featured "Flynn & Kushi" primary signage on door, replacing Bill Flynn's customary "Yankee Peddler" tag, which is radically downsized and moved to front fender. Photo from Connecticut Dragway 9/07/70. - RT | Bill faced Al Hanna's "Eastern Raider" on April 12 for a best of three match race at Maple Grove. Flynn's 7.84/185.18 won the first race when Hanna blew his engine. The back-up car of Al Phillips filled in for the last two races and Bill won both with runs of 8.00/185.94 and 7.71/186.72. A week later (April 19), he was up against Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette in another best of three match at Connecticut. Bill won the first two races with runs of 7.83/183.29 and 7.73/191.48 to sew up the match, but the two decided to make a third run for the fans. This time Bill lost his transmission on the line and Frank took a win with a 7.72/187. He ran really well at Maple Grove on June 20 for an eight-car show. In the first round, he ran a track record 7.15 at 198 while beating Tom Sneden's 7.45/196. But in the semifinals, his quicker 7.54/190 lost to Phil Castronovo's 7.56/191. Flynn was at Epping, N. H., on September 20 for the Fourth Annual New England Funny Car Nationals. It was a big 32 car show and Bill made it all the way into the semifinals. He started his day by beating the "Super Twister" with a 7.27/206.80. A 7.40/208 beat Sarge Arciero in the "Frantic Ford" in round two. He got crossed-up in the third round, but he still advanced with a 7.84/160 before losing to Jim Liberman's 7.37/207 in the semifinal with an ailing 11.40 time.

Notes: Hoover started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 5.38/244.03. He lost to low qualifier Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Tom stepped up to a career best (to this point) 5.12 at 277.77 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Quality Care Arizona Nationals. He beat Richard Hartman's 5.36/284 in the first round, with a 5.25/231.48. But in round two he again lost to Pedregon.

Notes: Johnny Loper started the season with an Arrow, but he changed over to a Mustang body at the end of June. Tripp was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.131/243.90 (Top Speed). He beat Gordie Bonin and Tom Prock in the first two rounds before losing to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.24/234 with a 6.36/225.56. He won the Division 7 Opener at Beeline two weeks later (February 18), stopping Kenny Bernstein in the final. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. It was a sixteen-car field, and he lasted until round two before the car shook the tires hard, and he shut off against Bernstein. Shumake set Top Speed at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #4 at 6.26/243.90 (again setting Top Speed). Unfortunately, he got crossed up and shut off in the first round against eventual winner Bonin. The following week (March 18), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.24 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. He lasted until the semifinals before being stopped by Dale Pulde's 6.21 in the semifinals with an off-pace 6.82. He also ran at Atlanta on April 22 for the IHRA Dixie Nationals, but he failed to reach the finals. Things didn't go too well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was rained out on April 29 and run on May 2. Tripp used up two motors attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, but he ended up as the first alternate with a best of 6.46/230.17. The NHRA Springnationals saw Shumake qualify #6 with a 6.18/236.84. But an opening-round 6.322/236.84 lost to Jim Adolph's 6.28/216. Rain postponed the IHRA Springnationals that was supposed to run at Bristol on June 17 to the following week, June 24. Eliminations there didn't matter to Tripp as he lost a blower in qualifying and the resulting fire wrecked the Arrow body. Shumake was OK. After that, the Mustang replaced the Arrow. The Pomona times were the Arrow's bests.

Notes: Worsham started the season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.36/284.18. A 5.31/284.81 in round one, beat Gary Densham's 5.44/249, but in round two, his 5.47/254.30 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.29/262. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.37/279.93 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he lost to Richard Hartman in round one. Houston was NHRA's next stop for the Supernationals. Del's 5.29/280.02 qualified #4. Paul Smith broke against him in the first round, and Del advanced with a 5.27/280.28. In round two, he lost to Al Hofmann. Worsham's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He ran 5.68/254.30 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. A 5.72/240.77 in round one, advanced when Paula Martin's Probe broke. In the semifinals, his 5.66/261.39 (Top Speed) beat Freddie Neely's 5.80/247. This put him into the final against Tom Hoover. This became an expensive pass for Del. About 700 feet into the run, the crankshaft broke. This caused a massive fireball. The engine explosion was so bad that it bent the upper main frame rail. The only thing holding the remains of the JP-1 in the car was the oil lines. Del was OK, but the car was totaled. Del recovered to have a pretty good NHRA national event season. He was runner up at Atlanta, Englishtown, and Indy and made it to round 3 at Memphis and Denver. He Ran NHRA best times of 5.194/286.89 at Ennis Fall, but he practically lived in the low 5.20s at 280 plus for the second half of the season. He set Top Speed at Sonoma at 280.89.

Notes: Red with black Logghe Stamping Co. chassis. Original body from first built to mid 69. This body burned off at Texas and was replaced by lightweight color gelcoat body known as Band Aid body. Used to win the '69 Coke Circuit. Gary Dyer drove after recovering from burn injuries in 1968 Charger fire at US 30 in Gary, Ind. | Ran 7.46 at York US 30. Ad cited him as a 2/1 favorite to win the next race and cited 7.26/197.35 bests at the time. - DD | After having a terrible season in '68, the "Mr. Norm" team rebounded in '69 with this new Charger 500. Early in the season, Gary Dyer had planned on retiring from driving, and Norm Weekly was put behind the wheel. But the "racing bug" returned and before long, Dyer was once again driving the car. Norm went on to drive Chris Karamesines' new FC. The Charger 500 body was built by Fiberglass Ltd. It was narrowed ten inches and chopped two. The interior tin was done by Lee Austin, and it was his first attempt. It turned out really well. The Logghe Brother's 125" chassis held a stock-stroke 426 Hemi built by Dyer. It used M/T rods and pistons. Crower was the camshaft of choice. The heads were also done by Dyer. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold and once again Dyer was involved as he prepared his own GMC 6/71. Up on top sat a Hilborn four port injector. The 1,500 hp was transferred to the 4.56 Dana rear end by a TorqueFlite transmission. Gary was a regular on the, new for '69, Coca-Cola Cavalcade tour.

Notes: A dismal year, performance and sponsor-wise. Gary started the year by qualifying #1 at the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to Don Prudhomme. Gary failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and a best of 6.30 also was unable to qualify at the Gatornationals. He did make the eight-car field at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 but went up in smoke in the first round, and lost to Raymond Beadle. Gary was at Maple Grove in April for its Spring All-Pro race. It was an eight-car show, and Burgin won his first-round race over Bruce Larson with a 6.20/232.55 but fouled in the semifinals against Bob Seifert. He was back at Maple Grove in May for the Jungle Jim Memorial race. Six cars made two runs each, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gary's first race saw Dale Pulde beat him with a 6.27/229 to his 6.43/229.00. His 6.35/228.42 beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" Mustang in his second race. Unfortunately, neither of his times was good enough to make the final round race. At the NHRA Springnationals, Gary had all kinds of problems and failed to qualify. He had a blower explode, and after fixing it, every other attempt to qualify had the car go up in tire smoke. It was upsetting considering that he had won this event the year before. He did much better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where a 6.015/242.58 qualified #2 behind Beadle's 5.94. Gary beat Rick Johnson in the first round, with a 6.12, but in round two, he lost to Al Segrini. He then went to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.44, but another 6.44 in round one, lost to Prudhomme's 6.23. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field at the PHR Championships with a 6.15/235.60. An opening round 6.42/222 beat an out-of-shape Stan Bowman, and in the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.31/238.09 (Top Speed) when Billy Meyer's reverser broke after his burnout. In the final, he ran Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," and his 6.44/236.84 finished second best to Colson's 6.20/231. The following week (August 17), he stopped off at Epping, New England, for the NHRA Division 1 Final, where he qualified #1 with a 6.01/241.28 (Top Speed). He set Low ET in the first round, where his 6.01/240 beat Pulde's 6.13/223. He shut off to 8.70 in the semifinal, but that was good enough to win as Al Hanna crossed the centerline and was disqualified. This put Gary into the final against Johnson. Once again, Gary's opponent crossed the centerline, and Burgin got the victory with an 11.33/71.59. Another win came at Englishtown over an eight-car field where Gary set Low ET at 6.09. He also ran 6.26/240.64 to beat John Speelman. In the final, he met Paul Smith driving Larry Coogle's "Sting." Gary won with a 6.12 at a new track speed record of 243.90 over Paul's 6.38/194. More disappointment came at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where his best of 6.11/241.28 failed to qualify for the show. Yet, just two weeks later, he won the IHRA US Open Championships at Rockingham. There he qualified #3 with a 6.19, and in the first round, he beat Frank Oglesby with a 6.37. He set Low ET of the meet in the semifinals with a 6.07/238.72 over Pulde's 6.24. This put him against Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" car in the final. It was a close race between the two, but Gary's 6.26/237.46 prevailed over Rosberg's 6.28/239. | I've heard that Gary built this car himself at J. Ed Horton's shop? - Tim Simplot | Yes, Burgin usually ran Jaime Sartes', later built his own cars in '80-'82. - Joe Moore

Notes: Tharp was at the Texas Motorplex in April for the IHRA Texas Nationals. His 5.80/242.45 qualified #14, but he lost to Mike Dunn in the first round, of competition. On May 15, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. There, his 5.61 qualified #6, but he lost to R.C. Sherman in the opening round. Photo from Columbus 1988. Richard drove the 'Max for most of the NHRA season, although Ronny Young took over at the World Finals. Richard's best NHRA times were a 5.569 in eliminations at Seattle and 259.94 in a second alternate effort at Columbus. Where did Richard run 5.40/270? We may need to remove those times.
