Notes: In the new millennium, Don Schumacher has become the owner of the largest professional team in drag racing with eight cars. But at one time he was a driver himself with the "Stardust" series of AA/Funny Cars that he raced from 1966 to 1974. The car is the "Stardust" '68 Barracuda. The car featured a late Chrysler engine inside a Logghe Stamping Co. frame. Schumacher bought the car from Butch Leal, who gave up funny cars to go doorslammer racing. This was a departure for Schumacher, who previously raced Romeo Palamides built cars, including a front-hinge flip top funny car. The Barracuda ran a best of 7.22-205 in 1969 as No. 1 qualifier, Low ET at NHRA Nationals, Indy. - DW | Don started the year by qualifying first with a 7.50 at the Irwindale New Year's Day Race. A first round 7.59-195.64 beat Lew Arrington's 8.06-195. In the second round, a 7.52-198.66 took care of Jim Liberman's ailing Nova and in the semifinal he set a 7.44 track record at 198.66 over a fouling Dick Bourgeois. In the final, a blown trans stopped his march to victory. He again qualified first at the AHRA Winternationals with a 7.67-194.38. He was upset by a new car in the first round, Danny Ongais. At Pomona on Feb 2 for the NHRA Winternationals, Don could only muster an 8.02-195.65 (Top Speed) in qualifying second. A first round 8.24 beat a crossed-up Dave Beebe in the Super Chief, but an 8.10 by Rich Siroonian in round two stopped his 8.12-191.08. On Feb 9 at OCIR for the second All-Pro race, he qualified fourth with a 7.63-192.30 and he made it into the final, meeting Siroonian who dropped a 7.39-195 bombshell on him. The following week on Feb 16 for the Stardust Open at Las Vegas he made it into the semifinal before Ongais' 7.88-193 put him on the trailer. He set Top Speed at 7.72-199.11 in qualifying fourth at Riverside for the HRM Championships, but he lost fire in the first round. On March 29 he competed in the final OCIR All-Pro race and had an easy first round when Dave Beebe broke. In the semis against Ongais, both cars ran 7.71 but Don was disqualified for crossing the centerline. Jim Liberman faced Schumacher at a match race at Connecticut on April 6 and Jim beat Don three straight. A rematch was set for April 19 at Blaney. Liberman won the first race and Don's 8.00-191 won the second over JJ's 8.07-182. So both were loaded for bear for the final race. Jim's 8.00-182 won over Schumacher's track records of 7.94-190. At Aquasco's fourth annual FC Invitational on May 4, Don ran a first round 7.95-189.86 over George Reese, but Liberman's Low ET 7.81-189 shot in the semifinal beat his 7.98-191.88. Another match race was run on May 10 at York U.S. 30 against Eddie Schartman. Don beat Schartman two straight before racing the backup car of Al Graeber and setting track records of 7.42-196.92. On May 27, Aquasco held an eight-car show and Don won his first round race with a 7.84-194.38 and in the semifinal his 8.02-189.06 beat Ron Rivero who lost a transmission. Unfortunately, Schumacher also lost a trans so he was unable to make the final. He went to U.S. 131, Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race on May 29, but he got out-of-shape in the first round and lost to Gary Dyer's 7.55-193. Minnesota held a six car show on June 1, and Don broke against Hedrick (7.75-188) in his first race. In his second race, he beat Clare Sanders' 8.31-175 with a 7.58-194.80 (Top Speed). In his third race, he got out-of-shape and lost to Dick Loehr's 7.59-193. He got a big win at Aquasco on June 22 for the President's Gold Cup Championships. He beat Malcolm Durham's 8.05-186 in the first round with a 7.77-194.38. Don singled in the semifinal with a 7.98-196.50 (Top Speed). In the final he set Low ET at 7.68-195.22 in beating Liberman's 7.75-194. On July 19, Don raced at the Rocky Mountain FC Championships. He beat the ailing Colt 45 in the first round with a 9.80-126.93 but lost to John Dekker's 8.74-173 in the semifinal with a 9.00-155.70. At the Cars Magazine meet, he ran a first round 7.54 at a track speed record of 201.34 over Frank Federici but he lost fire on the line against Frank Oglesby in the second round. He had a rare (for him) first round loss at the PHR Championships on Aug 2 when Randy Walls' 7.69-180 beat Don's 7.86-191.08. At the next event, the AHRA Nationals at York on Aug 17, he more than made up for the first round loss by winning the race with a final 7.39-198.22 over a fouling Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian. He set Top Speed at 200.88 and had beaten Terry Hedrick in the second round and ran a 7.30 in the semifinals while beating Dick Harrell's 7.39. At the U.S. Nationals on Sept 1, Don qualified second with a 7.27 at only 189.47, and a first round 7.22-204 over Jess Tyree's 7.46-199 was good for Low ET of the meet. But against Bruce Larson in the second round he lost a transmission putting him out of the show. A big match race against Rich Siroonian was run at Irwindale on Oct 4 and Don won the first race with a 7.72-195.64 over Rich's 7.80-191. But Siroonian came back to win the next two races with runs of 7.63-201 and 7.43-204 over Schumacher's 7.65-197.26 and 7.69-200.44. On Oct 11, OCIR held its FC Invitational event with eight cars going for the win. Don advanced past the first round when Ed Lenarth fouled and in the semifinal, a 7.52- 201.79 lost to Pat Minick's 7.40-200. He didn't do very well on Oct 18 at the Irwindale East/West meet when he lost to Ron Leslie's 7.84-185 in the first round, knocking him into the consolation round where be again lost in the first round. This time a 7.40-200 by Gas Ronda beat his 7.83-183.83. He ran much better the following day (Oct 19) at the Fremont Fallnationals, where a first round 7.50-185.56 sent Terry Hedrick's 7.75-175 to the trailer. A semifinal 7.58-196.92 advanced when Siroonian lost a trans. In the final, a 7.53-198.22 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.71-186.32 in Mickey Thompson's white Mustang. That was followed by another win on Oct 25 over a sixteen car field at Lions for the East/West Championships. A first round 7.49-188.67 beat Randy Walls' 7.59-188, and a round two 7.52-182.92 advanced when Lenarth broke. In the final he met Siroonian and a 7.32-193.96 beat Rich's ailing 9.54-79. He competed at Sears Point on Nov 2 but failed to get to the finals. A 7.55 on Nov 7 at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet qualified him first on the Chrysler team. But the following week (Nov 16) he won only one of his three races. A 7.57-197.80 beat Danny Ongais' 7.62-191. In his second race Terry Hedrick's 7.46-188 beat Don's 7.50-195.65. In his final race he exploded a trans against Mike Van Sant in the Invader. He ran well on Nov 9 at Carlsbad for the PDA Race of Champions. He ran a 7.60-188.10 over Liberman's 7.60-191 and a semifinal 7.56-187.50 beat Snow who had driveline problems. In the final, Larry Reyes 7.46-195 was too much for Schumacher's 7.84-166.66. - Ron Howard

Notes: Second of two Mustangs. Ran 6.50 at Indy Nationals 9/73. -- RH | On Aug 5, Billy was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.62 and beat Cogo Eads in the first round. A second round 6.50-212.77 beat Don Schumacher's 6.77 but in the semifinals he smoked the tires and lost to Don Prudhomme. At the fourth Division Five race at Minnesota, Billy lost fire on the line in the first round against Art Ward. Meyer was at Tulsa for the AHRA National Challenge race on August 26. It was a 32 car field and he ran a 6.60-216.86 to qualify #9. A first round 6.64-214 beat Tom Hoover while in the second round, he beat low qualifier Gerry Glenn with a 6.63-218. He lost to Jim Nicoll in round three. The following week (Sept 3), he was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. It was a tough field to make as the sixteen car show had almost 50 cars trying to get in. Billy's 6.50-219.51 just made the show on the "bubble." Unfortunately, a first round 6.69-210 failed to get past Ed McCulloch's 6.40-222. He won the NHRA Points race at Beech Bend on Sept 8, setting Low ET in the final with a 6.35-209.79 pass over Al Bergler. He got a semifinal finish at the IHRA U.S. Open, losing to Pat Foster in Barry Setzer's Vega. Billy made it to the semis of the next IHRA event as well, the All American Nationals at Bristol on Oct 14. He beat Dale Pulde in round two with a 6.97-210.28 but in the semifinals, a 6.81-180.36 lost to Dale Emery.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1993 U.S. Nats (Big Bud Shootout), Indy. DNQ for "main show" at 18th overall with a best of 5.35-264.00. Qualified 6th for Big Bud Shootout. Lost to Chuck Etchells in round one. | Gary started his season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.24-271.65. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. The team had trouble at the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona and Gary's best of 6.13-198.89 failed to make the field. Things were much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals where a 5.32-251.80 qualified #9. A 5.34-264.78 in the first round lost to Gordie Bonin's 5.21-289. Bolger had a good showing at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #13 with a 5.41-264.86. A first round 5.35-262.54 beat Pulde's 5.82-240. In round two, a 5.32-268.57 took out Whit Bazemore's 5.50-209. Unfortunately, he spun the tires in the semifinals and lost to Al Hofmann's 5.17-284. At the NHRA Winston Invitational, Gary had some good luck/bad luck going on. First he failed to qualify for the eight car show running a best of 5.54-264.08 for the first alternate. Then Bazemore blew an engine in his already qualified car and the resulting fire kept him out of eliminations. Bolger took his place in the field then promptly smoked his tires in his first round race against Hofmann. Atlanta was NHRA's next stop for the Southern Nationals at the end of April. Gary qualified #11 with a 5.34-272.39. He beat a tire smoking Del Worsham in the first round with a 5.41-268.89. In round two, his 5.40-264.47 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.28-269.

Notes: Photo from 1990 Nationals. Scott qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.38-269.94. A first round 5.39-268.49 advanced when Jerry Caminito fouled but in round two he slowed to 5.44-250.62 and lost to Bruce Larson's 5.31-271. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.42-269.38 but he lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. Things didn't go so well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals and the best time Scott was able to run (6.72-135.48) failed to qualify. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, things went better, but not much. He qualified #15 with a 5.64-257.21 but he lost to John Force in the first round. Another first round loss came at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where Kalitta qualified #11 with a 5.56-262.00 before losing to McCulloch.

Notes: Was this 5.99 altitude factored? Ran 6.063- 239.99 at NHRA Indy 9/80. | Guzman won the NHRA Division Five Opener in April at Pueblo Motorsports Park. He set low ET and top speed in qualifying with a 6.32-219.99. In the final he beat Dave Benjamin for the title. He won the next Division Five race at Amarillo where once again he set low ET and top speed with 6.29-228.90 times. In the final, he won with a slow 9.75 when Paul Gordon, driving Dick Williams Firebird, crossed the centerline and was disqualified. Rob was on his own turf when the NHRA tour ran in Denver at Bandimere for the Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.26 behind Billy Meyer's 6.23. It was an eight car show and in round one his 6.29-232.55 beat John Force. He soloed in the semifinals when Henry Harrison fired to fire in the "L. A. Hooker" Corvette. In the final, he met Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" and it took a low ET of the meet run of 6.19 at 234 to beat Williams close 6.21-233.76 for the victory. It was a good showing for the "Assassination" team. Rob won the NHRA Division Five race at Bonneville Raceway in July. He qualified first with a 6.30-231.37 (top speed), then went on to set low ET at 6.27 while beating Jim Dunn in the final. At the next Division Five race, Rob again made it into the final, but this time he lost to Bob Pickett. At Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, his 6.03-239.99 qualified #7. He lost to Tripp Shumake in the first round. He failed to qualify at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals.

Notes: Photo from Martin, MI, 1985. | Hoover failed to qualify at Pomona for the season opening Winternationals. His best of 6.25-218.55 was a bit short of the 6.08 "bump." Tom ran much better at the Gatornationals, running a 5.86-247.93 to qualify #13. He took it easy with a 7.23-126.19 in the first round when Rick Johnson fouled. But in the second round he smoked the tires and lost to Kenny Bernstein. He qualified last (#16) in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals with a 6.06-234.49 and he lost early. Ran 6.157-239.36 at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway 8/85.

A first round 8.24-176.12 beat Don Williamson in the "Hairy Canary" but in the semifinals, he fouled away a 8.53-171.10 against Marv Eldrige's 9.53-169. Conway won over an eight car field at Lions on Sept 30. He beat Eldridge's Corvette in the first round with a 8.39-172.74 and in the semifinals, his 8.31-172.08 beat Steve Barrett's 8.45-171 in the "New Breed." The final found Conway running Frank Pisano's Camaro. Frank ran a personal best of 8.19-170 but lost to Conway's holeshot-aided 8.25-175.78. On Dec 17, he was at OCIR's final race of '67. He lead the eight car field in qualifying with a 8.07-177 and went on to win, beating Ray Alley in the final.

Notes: Won NHRA Winternats in 1992 (fifth race on nitro). Photo from 1992 Winternationals. Jim drove Jim West's car and his own in 1992. Need to confirm which car ran which event. Check DragStats for best times after this is determined. | Jim qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.23-275.73. He went on to win the event by running steady 5.2's and then taking on John Force in the final. His final round 5.26-273.80 beat Force's 5.32-275. At NHRA's second race of the season, the Arizona Nationals, Jim qualified #2 with a 5.28-271.90. A first round 5.32-268.41 beat Gary Clapshaw but he slowed to a 5.40-268.17 in round two that lost to Gary Densham's holeshot aided 5.43-267. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Jim again qualified well, ripping off a 5.22-272.72 for the #2 spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Caminito in the first round. Jim made it into another final round at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.25-275.81 and in the first round he smoked the tires to a 6.02-167.09 but still won when Caminito smoked his tires even worse to a 6.69-140. In round two, he improved to a 5.20-279.85 to beat Paul Smith. In the semifinals, another consistent 5.22-270.51 beat Gary Bolger's 5.27-273 to advance into the final. Once again he faced Force in the final but this time their roles were reversed from the Winternationals. Here John set low ET and top speed at 5.15-289 in the final to stop Jim's 5.27-275.39. These runs were all made with Epler's own car.
