Notes: Paul did not drive this car in NHRA competition in 1988 (driving the Etchells Top Fuel car instead). Smith qualified on the "bump" at Bristol in September for the IHRA Fallnationals. In the opening round, he smoked the tires and lost to low qualifier R.C. Sherman. The following week (October 2), he was at the Texas Motorplex for the IHRA Chief Nationals. His 5.40 qualified #5. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, but in round two, his 5.61/234.13 fell to Mark Oswald's 5.41/265. Photo from Columbus 1987.

Notes: Tom started the '87 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in Jan. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 5.93/231.36. In the opening round of eliminations, the fans were treated to a good old, “Snake" vs. "Mongoose" race. This time around, McEwen’s out of shape 7.25/111.24 held on to win over Don Prudhomme's tire-smoking, shut off, 14.52. Tom smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner John Force. Not long after that, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.69/244.56 qualified #13, but a slightly better 5.68/247.04 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.53/266 in round one. He was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #5. He beat alternate Scott Kalitta in the first round, and in the semifinals, he got around McCulloch easily as Ed’s 'chute had fallen out. He went up against Kenny Bernstein's bad Buick in the final and Tom's 5.87/243 finished runner-up to Bernstein's 5.73/256. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, his 5.84/244.43 qualified #15. Once again, he faced the "Snake" in the first round, but this time Prudhomme's 5.70/263 put the "Goose's" 5.86/239.36 on the trailer. Tom drove Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" to a runner-up finish at the NHRA Winston All-Star race held at the Texas Motorplex early in April, but he was back in his own car the following week (April 11) for the Coors Funny Car Championships at Firebird. The race was run "Chicago Style," with all cars making two runs and the two with the lowest ETs would race in the final. Tom did not have much luck here as first he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.84 in a loss to Force's 5.88, and in his second race against Johnny West driving the "Hawaiian,” McEwen got slightly out of shape and crossed the centerline. If he thought his luck was bad there, it got even worse at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field, and it was a good thing for Tom. He lost two superchargers in qualifying, and his 7.11/104.63 best held for the #15 spot in the field. He lost another supercharger in the first round, while losing to Tom Hoover. After that, McEwen disappeared from competition until June 14 when he showed up at Columbus and attempted to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, his 6.17/218.02 best was good for the fifth alternate. The following week, he was at Brainerd for the Crown Funny Car Championships, but his 6.56/157.61 lost to Doc Halladay's 5.90/251 in the first round. After that, he followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue as McEwen qualified #14 with a 12.63/82.88. He surprised Bruce Larson in the first round, where Tom's 5.91/240.70 beat Larson's 5.93/247. But the Corvette broke in round two, giving Billy Meyer an easy ride into the semifinals. He also returned to IHRA competition at Milan for the Northern Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field, and in the first round, his 5.79/253 lost to low qualifier Bernstein’s 5.63/261. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Tom ran 5.85/248.89 to qualify #15 and in the first round, he improved to 5.76/250.97 to stop McCulloch. He lost to Mike Dunn driving Joe Pisano's car in round two. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Tom qualified #11 with a 5.97/241.93. His 6.02/236.53 in the opening round lost to West's 5.95/241. On August 1, he was competing at the Motorcraft Funny Car Challenge race held at the Texas Motorplex. It was another "Chicago Style" race. In the first round, McEwen’s 5.80/245.63 lost to Hoover's 5.59/264. In his second race, his quicker 5.83/245.83 lost to Meyer's 5.84/231. His times were not good enough to advance into the final. He was back at Brainerd on August 16 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. His 5.83/248.48 qualified #14 and he broke in the first round against McCulloch. It was then off to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. McEwen qualified #4 and then beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.79/248.62. But in the semifinals, he lost to Mark Oswald driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. He was running really well at Indy for the NHRA Nationals. Twenty-seven cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and McEwen's 5.65/258.91 got him the #8 spot in the field. In the first round, both he and opponent Prudhomme ran 5.70 (Tom at 244), but the "Snake" crossed the stripe first. He did not race at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open, but he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. There, his 5.74/244.76 qualified #11. But he had problems and was unable to show for his first-round match against Tim Grose. After 6.009/215.31 and 5.902/248.41 DNQs at the Chief Auto Parts Nationals and the Arizona Fallnationals, Tom got it together for the NHRA World Finals. He qualified with a strong 5.501/261.02 for #7. However, gremlins returned in round one, and Tom lost to Scott Kalitta, 6.260/220.53 to 7.659/119.20. Before the World Finals, McEwen got a call from Coors telling him that they would not renew their contract for '88. Word had been that he was OK came from his 7-year sponsor in September, but they had a change of heart by October. They didn't care if he ran the finals or not. | Did Tom run 263.92 in IHRA this year? | ND: Dale Armstrong helped out with the 5.50 at the 'Finals. - Joe Moore

Notes: Smith finished runner-up to John Force at the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza. He lost traction and fell off to 7.36/125.87 to lose to John's 6.29/229.88. Paul earlier had run 6.13/216.86 in round one. Smith failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he was the second alternate at 6.17/241.02. He also raced at Rockingham in the first week of May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but lost early. Soon after, he was at Maple Grove for its Spring FC Nationals. Six cars ran with the two cars with the lowest ETs meeting in the final. Paul's 6.11/198.23 advanced to the final to face Bruce Larson. But in the final, the parachute fell out of the "Custom Body" car on the line, and Larson made a 6.28 solo for the victory. He did not race at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals but at Bristol early in June for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.02/223 in the first round fell to Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/260. He qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.04/241.80. In round one, an off-pace 6.68/139.44 lost to Tom McEwen's 5.92/240. His next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 cars showed, so qualifying was not much of an issue. He ran 5.91/224.21 for the #13 spot in the show. His 6.04/249.03 in the opening round lost to eventual winner Rick Johnson's 5.91/251 in the "Hawaiian." In mid-July, he returned to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 5.83 qualified #14. Unfortunately, he lost to John Collins in round one. He made his third IHRA start of the year at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #9, and in the first round, he beat McEwen with a 5.85/252.52. The car got out of shape against Bernstein in the second round, and Smith got disqualified for crossing the centerline. Paul qualified #15 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.95/248.61. He improved to a 5.85/253.52 in the opening round to beat McEwen's 5.97/243, and an even better 5.80/240.00 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/206 in round two. But he overpowered the track in the semifinals and smoked the tires in a loss to John Collins. His 5.734/255.24 qualified #5 for the NHRA U.S. Nationals at Indy. He slowed to 5.86/254.66 in the first round and lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.82/253. Shortly after, Smith was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.87/244.69. In the first round, both he and Johnson ran 5.75 (Smith at 251.25), but the "Hawaiian" won. The following week (September 22), he was at Englishtown for the U.S. All-Pro FC Championships. His 5.94 in the first round lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.89. He was at Darlington for the IHRA Stroh's Nationals in the first week of October. He qualified #7, and he made his way to the final. A 5.74/247.93 beat a tire-smoking Mark Oswald in round two, and his 5.81/242.58 defeated Billy Meyer in the semifinal. He lost to Bernstein in the final. Paul also ran 5.859/252.52 at IHRA Cincinnati. AKA Utica Flash.

Notes: Paul drove at NHRA Atlanta 1990 and qualified eighth at 5.407/263.77. He beat Tom Hoover in round one, 5.295/268.49 to 5.48/259. In round two, he beat Jim White, 5.525/257.95 to 8.93/95. In round three, Paul stood up to John Force, snatching a close 5.356/263.85 to 5.372/271.90 decision. Force got a slight holeshot, and the margin at the stripe was .011 seconds - about 4 feet!) In the final, Paul fell off to a 9.94, and Ed McCulloch got a 5.31/258 win.

Notes: At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tripp qualified on the "bump" with a 6.28/238.06. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round before breaking in round two and losing to John Force. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran 6.10/242.58 to qualify #14. A 6.11/238.72 in round one beat a tire-shaking Tim Grose, while in round two, his 6.27/237.46 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.31/230 in the "Blue Max." He fell off to a 6.75/174.75 in the semifinals that lost to Pulde's 6.33/223. He was at Green Valley on April 5 for the NHRA Western Regional, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jim Dunn. Jim smoked the tires and shut off while Tripp advanced with a 6.92/221.67. In the semifinals, his 6.47 lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.25. Tripp won the Southern Nationals. His 5.989/226.70 in Atlanta was the 8th and final entry into the Cragar Five-Second Club for funny cars. It qualified him #2 behind Beadle's 5.96/230. His 6.10/233.76 beat Paul Smith, who shut down early in the "Entertainer" in the opening round. His opponent, Shirl Greer, smoked the tires in the semifinal, and Tripp ran 6.20/226.59 to advance. He faced Kenny Bernstein in the final, and Shumake's 6.07/233.76 got the victory over Bernstein's 6.08/243. Tripp qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.26/224.43. In round one, his 6.36/222.22 fell to eventual winner Craig Epperly's 6.27/224. Shortly after that (June 27), he was in Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional. A 6.55/214.80 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.34/229.60 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Tom Ridings' 6.28/225. The best NHRA national event speed was 242.58 at the Gatornationals.

Notes: John Force entered the '81 season with a new sponsorship with Mountain Dew. John qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Frank Hawley and Tripp Shumake in rounds one and two before fouling against Billy Meyer in the semifinals. He qualified #9 at the Bakersfield March Meet at 6.494/220.04, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Dale Pulde. Force smoked the tires to a 6.91/168.85 that lost to Dale's 6.28/223. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Force qualified #12 with a 6.100/246.57. The speed held the national record for six minutes until Prudhomme reset it at 247.25. Unfortunately, he lost to Dale Armstrong in the first round. He failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and the NHRA Western Regional at OCIR. The Funny Cars boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals in a move to generate more money into the class. At the NHRA Springnationals, his best of 6.27/231.36 was good for the second alternate. It was a long dry spell for Force, but he finally made the show at the NHRA Western Regional at Sacramento. His 6.43/233.17 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and his first-round 6.87/181.09 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.28/218. Still, he had made the show. Things went the wrong way at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where John's 6.63/218.44 failed to qualify (third alternate). Only six cars showed at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Indianapolis in July, so there was no doubt that he would qualify. He ran a 6.41 for the #3 spot in the show. Something must have "clicked" because Ric Deschner failed to show in the first round, and Force ripped off a 6.14/238.72 single. In the semifinals, he improved even more to a Low ET and Top Speed shot of 6.06/243.90 to beat Tom Anderson. All he had to do to win was to beat Craig Epperly in the final. That he did with another strong run of 6.12 while Epperly had trouble and slowed to 9.56. The best NHRA times were 6.049 at Indy and 246.57 at Gainesville. Handouts claim 5.99/247 in 81 or 82 in Citation. | ND reported the 5.99/247 at the Sept. '81 OCIR Parade of Champions, with a full semi-trailer pit shot. I missed it by a week on leave prior to permanent duty station in SoCal. I did get the handout picture in '82, though. - Joe Moore

Notes: Rookie season as a fuel car. Les was runner-up to Jim Liberman at Maple Grove in June for the NHRA Division 1 race. He when to Suffolk on July 18 for its twice rained-out NHRA Division Two race. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. In August, he was at Empire Dragway for its Gold Cup Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.60/185.95 beat Roy Harris' 6.78/207 in the "Brutus" Mustang II. In the semifinal, a troubled 7.18/131.19 lost to Dodger Glenn's 6.57/194 in the "Frantic Ford." Les ran 6.32 at New England in September 1976. A 6.18/200.00 shut-off run at New England in October 1976 was the quickest Donovan AA/FC pass in history (even with steel heads). Reportedly never ran faster than 207.85, running quickly but shutting off to save parts. AKA Sundance Kid.

Notes: Johnny West, Scott Graham, Mike Lui, and Wyatt Radke started building a new car on November 27, 1992. The team finished it in Jan, the day before Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event. On the car's first run, Wyatt's first run was an early shutoff to 7.02/127.87. The team only made one other pass at Firebird, an 11.62/79.89. Things went much better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.25/284.62 qualified #11, and a shut off 7.20/122.01 advanced past round one when Mark Oswald failed to fire. In the second round, his 5.97/211.86 lost to eventual winner Del Worsham. A week later, they were in Arizona for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. Radke qualified #11 again with a 5.45/267.30. He improved to 5.37/284.45 in the first round to beat Oswald's 5.39/217, but a 5.39/233.52 in the second round lost to Del Worsham's 5.25/283. NHRA's next stop was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. There, Wyatt's 5.33/264.31 qualified #10. In round one, an off-pace 5.67/251.32 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.13/281. He was the #14 qualifier at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.43/271.82, but he lost to Force in the first round. He got back at Force at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car field, and Wyatt's 5.44/263.15 qualified #7. He faced Force in round one, and John smoked the tires while Radke got the win light with a 5.33/240.64. Unfortunately, the Daytona broke in the semifinals against Gordie Bonin. The team made up for it at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, where a 5.27/284.09 qualified #2. He beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.49/268.81 and a 5.35/281.33 stopped Whit Bazemore's 5.43/269 in round two. But in the semifinals, old veteran Tom Hoover ran 5.44/256 to end Radke's hopes with a 5.52/271.73. The team skipped the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown but was back on the Springnationals. A 5.142 was low qualifier, Low ET, and a new track record. After qualifying #1 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Radke beat Caminito in the first round, with a 5.32/277.60. A second-round 5.24/279.24 beat Chuck Etchells' close 5.26/282. In the semifinals, he faced Bonin, and Gordie got off the line first, and his 5.31/284 beat Wyatt's quicker 5.30/278.89. At the NHRA Western Nationals, Wyatt's 5.45/265.48 qualified #11. Unfortunately, he lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. That was Wyatt's last event in the car. Best times of 5.142/288.18 from Columbus.

Notes: Tom had a great season in '86. The season started on a bad note when his 5.93/212.26 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He wasn't at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he made sure he was noticed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.82/253.52. A 5.86/247.93 beat Ray Higley in the first round, and in round two, a 5.86/249.03 beat a tire-smoking Billy Meyer. He faced low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals, and McEwen was up to the task. He left on time and beat Bernstein's quicker 5.65/255 with a 5.677/256.11. That put him into the final with Ed McCulloch. Unfortunately, Tom's Corvette broke, and the "Ace" soloed for the victory. He qualified #2 at the IHRA Bayou Nationals but failed to reach the finals. He didn't have a very good outing for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. His best of 6.11/238.47 in qualifying put him in the #15 spot, and he lost to eventual winner McCulloch in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. McEwen qualified second to Mark Oswald, and in the opening round, his 5.78/255.68 advanced over Scott Kalitta, who crossed the centerline. In the semi-final, his 5.77/257.87 lost to Kenny Bernstein's track record 5.58 at 246. He sure ran well at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, where he found himself in the winner’s circle. It started with a 5.70/257.87 that qualified #3. An easy 5.99/242.06 advanced past the first round when John Martin failed to show. In the second round, his 5.78/249.16 beat Tim Grose's 5.89/239. In the semifinals, a 5.85/236.71 beat Oswald's 5.94/251 in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. That put him into the final against Billy Meyer. Meyer smoked the tires and Tom roared to a 5.78/249.16 for the victory. He continued to run well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where after qualifying #4 with a 5.77/252.17, he made his way to the semifinals before having problems and shutting off to a 6.43/143.28 loss to Bernstein's 5.72/255. The following week (June 22), he was runner-up to Oswald at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. He was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on June 29. McEwen qualified #6 with a 5.85/240.77 and a first-round 5.82/233.28 beat Jim Head, but in the second round, he went up in smoke and lost to Johnny West's 5.79/259 in the "Hawaiian." Milan, Michigan, was his next stop on July 6 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tom qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.99/227.27, and once again, he smoked the tires, losing to McCulloch in the first round. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Tom qualified #5 with a 5.69/254.66. He got payback by beating McCulloch in the first round, but in round two, he had problems and shut off against Oswald. A week later (July 20), he was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. He ran well, qualifying #2 for the show, but failed to reach the finals. His best NHRA times were the 5.677 from Gainesville and 257.87 at the Cajuns. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Photo from Milan, Mich., 1986.

Notes: Denny's first time driving the Chi-Town car came on March 2 at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. Runner up to Gene Snow at IHRA Bristol June 1975 (6.46/224.43 bests). His 6.33/230.17 lost to Prudhomme in the semis at the PHR 131 race. Denny qualified #14 at 6.358/226.13 at Ontario, the team's only NHRA event. He beat Dave Condit in round one when Dave lost fire, hitting 6.452/199.11. Norm Wilcox did not show in round two, and Denny got a 6.660/184.80 bye run. Austin Coil really turned up the wick in the semis, and Denny ran a season-best 6.210/231.36 to defeat John Lombardo's decent 6.344/225.00. Prudhomme could not back up his amazing 5.987/241.53 numbers, but a 6.158/240.64 made Denny's 6.937/155.44 a runner-up in the final. Finished third in 1975 IHRA points (tied with Gene Snow). Hometown confirmed 1975. 787 or 781? Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975.

Notes: Comet roadster with Cammer, C-6 combo. Jack Chrisman got one of four original Logghe-built Comets in 1966. Jack took his proven blown 427 SOHC out of the Chrisman’s Comet to run in the new flip-top car, unlike Nicholson and Schartman, who ran injected Cammers. In 1966, it seemed that the four lightweight Comets dominated the funny car competition like no other cars. Car burned to the ground at New York National mid-1966. Repurchased the old Comet from Dee Keaton to finish the season. Chrisman ran a quickest-ever 8.71 and 184 mph at Riverside during the year. We need to confirm which combo ran that number. | This car would have been just at home at a car show as a race track. The Shedlik built fiberglass body weighed 200 lbs. and the whole car was just 1,870 lbs. Chrisman was experimenting with running direct-drive and C-6 automatic transmission. Jack was at Pomona on April 24 in his Comet roadster, making exhibition passes with a best of 9.06 at 171. At the end of May, he beat Emery Cook driving Don Garlits' Dart two straight at Cecil County. He ran times of 9.35/163.04 and 9.36/168 to win the match. He was still using his old '65 engine from the previous year's car, but he installed a new engine with aluminum heads shortly after. Chrisman won Funny Car at Riverside for the HRM Championships. He beat a fouling Al Vanderwoude in the first round, with an 8.72/184.42 (Top Speed). His 8.74/182.18 beat Bob Davis in the semifinals, while a final round 8.71/179.28 got the victory over Jim Liberman driving the "Brutus" car. On July 2, Jack was at Detroit in his Comet roadster to face Gary Dyer in the "Mr. Norm" car in a best two out of three match race. Jack attempted to warm up before the match but had some problems with his supercharger. He got it straightened out in time for the first race as his 8.59/177.51 beat Dyer, who blew his transmission. Dyer could not repair his car, so Chrisman soloed to win the match, but what a solo it was. He set a new track record 8.50/178.57 for the win. On July 9, he was at Capitol for a best of three match against Dick Landy. Dick was late arriving as his truck had blown a rear end on the way to the match. So, in the first race, Hubert Platt subbed for him in his Mustang. Platt's words were, "maybe he'll foul." Chrisman didn't foul in their race, and he ran an 8.82/181.44 to beat Platt's wheelstanding 9.86/136. Landy arrived with some help in the form of Malcolm Durham's transporter. So, the two lined up for round two of the match. They were having a good race until half-track when Chrisman exploded a supercharger. Landy won with a 9.33/137. Jack was done for the day, and once again, Platt was called in to race Landy in the final race. Platt lost, so Dick was declared the winner of the match. Jack was at York, PA, on July 17 for the NHRA Division One race. He set the S/XS speed record to 175.43. He was supposed to run off against Ed Schartman in the S/XS final, but Chrisman had bearing problems, and Schartman soloed for the win. ET 1966 (July 1966 Car Craft) MPH Crofton MD 1966 (8/12/66 Drag News). Car Craft's "Top Ten Rods of 1966" feature credited 8.71 at 184.00 times during the year. - RT

As mentioned, Ivo qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He made it to the final by beating Dave Hough in the "Super Shops" Arrow with a 6.38/220 to Dave's 6.47/216. A 6.48/226 beat Denny Savage and a semifinal 6.73/225 got around Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" car. Unfortunately, Tommy broke in the final and Don Prudhomme soloed for the win. Did Tommy go 240 somewhere this year?

Notes: In the new millennium, Don Schumacher has become the owner of the largest professional team in drag racing with eight-cars. But at one time he was a driver himself with the "Stardust" series of AA/Funny Cars that he raced from 1966 to 1974. The car is the "Stardust" '68 Barracuda. The car featured a late Chrysler engine inside a Logghe Stamping Co. frame. Schumacher bought the car from Butch Leal, who gave up funny cars to go doorslammer racing. This was a departure for Schumacher, who previously raced Romeo Palamides built cars, including a front-hinge flip top funny car. The Barracuda ran a best of 7.22/205 in 1969 as No. 1 qualifier, Low ET at NHRA Nationals, Indy. - Danny White | Don started the year by qualifying #1 with a 7.50 at the Irwindale New Year's Day Race. A first-round 7.59/195.64 beat Lew Arrington's 8.06/195. In the second round, a 7.52/198.66 took care of Jim Liberman's ailing Nova and in the semifinal he set a 7.44 track record at 198.66 over a fouling Dick Bourgeois. In the final, a blown trans stopped his march to victory. He again qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 7.67/194.38. He was upset by a new car in the first round, Danny Ongais. At Pomona on February 2 for the NHRA Winternationals, Don could only muster an 8.02/195.65 (Top Speed) in qualifying second. A first-round 8.24 beat a crossed-up Dave Beebe in the Super Chief, but an 8.10 by Rich Siroonian in round two stopped his 8.12/191.08. On February 9 at OCIR for the second All-Pro race, he qualified fourth with a 7.63/192.30 and he made it into the final, meeting Siroonian who dropped a 7.39/195 bombshell on him. The following week on February 16 for the Stardust Open at Las Vegas he made it into the semifinal before Ongais' 7.88/193 put him on the trailer. He set Top Speed at 7.72/199.11 in qualifying fourth at Riverside for the HRM Championships, but he lost fire in the first round. On March 29 he competed in the final OCIR All-Pro race and had an easy first-round when Dave Beebe broke. In the semis against Ongais, both cars ran 7.71, but Don was disqualified for crossing the centerline. Jim Liberman faced Schumacher at a match race at Connecticut on April 6 and Jim beat Don three straight. A rematch was set for April 19 at Blaney. Liberman won the first race and Don's 8.00/191 won the second over JJ's 8.07/182. So both were loaded for bear for the final race. Jim's 8.00/182 won over Schumacher's track records of 7.94/190. At Aquasco's fourth annual Funny Car Invitational on May 4, Don ran a first-round 7.95/189.86 over George Reese, but Liberman's Low ET 7.81/189 shot in the semifinal beat his 7.98/191.88. Another match race was run on May 10 at York US 30 against Eddie Schartman. Don beat Schartman two straight before racing the backup car of Al Graeber and setting track records of 7.42/196.92. On May 27, Aquasco held an eight-car show and Don won his first-round race with a 7.84/194.38 and in the semifinal his 8.02/189.06 beat Ron Rivero who lost a transmission. Unfortunately, Schumacher also lost a trans so he was unable to make the final. He went to US 131, Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race on May 29, but he got out-of-shape in the first round, and lost to Gary Dyer's 7.55/193. Minnesota held a six car show on June 1, and Don broke against Hedrick (7.75/188) in his first race. In his second race, he beat Clare Sanders' 8.31/175 with a 7.58/194.80 (Top Speed). In his third race, he got out-of-shape and lost to Dick Loehr's 7.59/193. He got a big win at Aquasco on June 22 for the President's Gold Cup Championships. He beat Malcolm Durham's 8.05/186 in the first round, with a 7.77/194.38. Don singled in the semifinal with a 7.98/196.50 (Top Speed). In the final he set Low ET at 7.68/195.22 in beating Liberman's 7.75/194. On July 19, Don raced at the Rocky Mountain Funny Car Championships. He beat the ailing Colt 45 in the first round, with a 9.80/126.93, but lost to John Dekker's 8.74/173 in the semifinal with a 9.00/155.70. At the Cars Magazine meet, he ran a first-round 7.54 at a track speed record of 201.34 over Frank Federici, but he lost fire on the line against Frank Oglesby in the second round. He had a rare (for him) first-round loss at the PHR Championships on August 2 when Randy Walls' 7.69/180 beat Don's 7.86/191.08. At the next event, the AHRA Nationals at York on August 17, he more than made up for the first-round loss by winning the race with a final 7.39/198.22 over a fouling Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian. He set Top Speed at 200.88 and had beaten Terry Hedrick in the second round and ran a 7.30 in the semifinals while beating Dick Harrell's 7.39. At the US Nationals on September 1, Don qualified second with a 7.27 at only 189.47, and a first-round 7.22/204 over Jess Tyree's 7.46/199 was good for Low ET of the meet. But against Bruce Larson in the second round, he lost a transmission putting him out of the show. A big match race against Rich Siroonian was run at Irwindale on October 4 and Don won the first race with a 7.72/195.64 over Rich's 7.80/191. But Siroonian came back to win the next two races with runs of 7.63/201 and 7.43/204 over Schumacher's 7.65/197.26 and 7.69/200.44. On October 11, OCIR held its Funny Car Invitational event with eight-cars going for the win. Don advanced past the first-round when Ed Lenarth fouled and in the semifinal, a 7.52- 201.79 lost to Pat Minick's 7.40/200. He didn't do very well on October 18 at the Irwindale East/West meet when he lost to Ron Leslie's 7.84/185 in the first round, knocking him into the consolation round where be again lost in the first round. This time a 7.40/200 by Gas Ronda beat his 7.83/183.83. He ran much better the following day (October 19) at the Fremont Fallnationals, where a first-round 7.50/185.56 sent Terry Hedrick's 7.75/175 to the trailer. A semifinal 7.58/196.92 advanced when Siroonian lost a trans. In the final, a 7.53/198.22 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.71/186.32 in Mickey Thompson's white Mustang. That was followed by another win on October 25 over a sixteen-car field at Lions for the East/West Championships. A first-round 7.49/188.67 beat Randy Walls' 7.59/188, and a round two 7.52/182.92 advanced when Lenarth broke. In the final he met Siroonian and a 7.32/193.96 beat Rich's ailing 9.54/79. He competed at Sears Point on November 2, but failed to get to the finals. A 7.55 on November 7 at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet qualified him first on the Chrysler team. But the following week (November 16) he won only one of his three races. A 7.57/197.80 beat Danny Ongais' 7.62/191. In his second race Terry Hedrick's 7.46/188 beat Don's 7.50/195.65. In his final race he exploded a trans against Mike Van Sant in the Invader. He ran well on November 9 at Carlsbad for the PDA Race of Champions. He ran a 7.60/188.10 over Liberman's 7.60/191 and a semifinal 7.56/187.50 beat Snow who had driveline problems. In the final, Larry Reyes 7.46/195 was too much for Schumacher's 7.84/166.66. - Ron Howard

Notes: Tom debuted this new Ramchargers-motored John Buttera Duster early in the year. We need to confirm that it was the car he raced at Pomona. His 1970 car ran a few January events, including one where he claimed a 6.55 at Lions. Tom had an interesting NHRA season, running both his top fuel and funny car at most meets. Tom was the eighth alternate at Pomona (no times but the bump spot was a 7.306). He qualified #9 at the Dallas Springnationals at 6.968/208.81, but he fouled against Don Schumacher in round one, tossing out a 6.96/207.37 to Don's 6.92/205.21. Tom was the ninth alternate at Indy with a 7.12/204.54 effort. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. At some point in the year, Tom ran 6.67 at Tri-City.

Notes: Gary started his season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.24/271.65. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. The team had trouble at the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, and Gary's best of 6.13/198.89 failed to make the field. Things were much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where a 5.32/251.80 qualified #9. A 5.34/264.78 in the first round, lost to Gordie Bonin's 5.21/289. Bolger had a good showing at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #13 with a 5.41/264.86. A first-round 5.35/262.54 beat Pulde's 5.82/240. In round two, a 5.32/268.57 took out Whit Bazemore's 5.50/209. Unfortunately, he spun the tires in the semifinals and lost to Al Hofmann's 5.17/284. At the NHRA Winston Invitational, Gary had some good luck/bad luck going on. First, he failed to qualify for the eight-car show running a best of 5.54/264.08 for the first alternate. Then Bazemore blew an engine in his already qualified car, and the resulting fire kept him out of eliminations. Bolger took his place in the field and then promptly smoked his tires in his first-round race against Hofmann. Atlanta was NHRA's next stop for the Southern Nationals at the end of April. Gary qualified #11 with a 5.34/272.39. He beat a tire-smoking Del Worsham in the first round with a 5.41/268.89. In round two, his 5.40/264.47 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.28/269. Gary followed the NHRA tour to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, where his 5.63/257.65 qualified #14. He improved to 5.39/264.39 in the first round to beat Hofmann's 5.50/269, but the car hurt some parts, and Bolger could not make his second-round race against Hoover. It was then on to Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals. A 5.31/269.05 qualified #12, but a better 5.29/266.19 in the first round lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.14/277. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Gary qualified #12 with a 5.36/269.29. A 5.41/250.62 in the first round, lost to Hofmann's 5.30/280. Shortly after that, he was at Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals. He qualified #14 at 5.54/241.61, and a 5.66/237.21 fell to Hofmann's 5.33/281 in the first round. On July 10, he was at Martin, Michigan, for a four-car show. He lost to Bazemore in the final. At Denver, for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Gary ran 5.61/247.18 to qualify #10. In round one, his 5.68/235.97 lost to John Force's 5.45/266. The following week, the team was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. Bolger's 5.51/235.41 qualified #12, and in the first round, he lost a blower belt, and his 5.55/214.38 fell to Etchell's 5.47/270. The next stop was in Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. A 5.30/262.69 qualified #12, and this time his 5.34/268.73 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.21/284 in round one. DNQ for "main show" at Indy. Gary was 18th overall with a best of 5.35/264.00. Qualified 6th for Big Bud Shootout. Lost to Chuck Etchells in round one. Rick Howard photo from 1993 US Nats (Big Bud Shootout), Indy.

Notes: This team was tough and was able to surprise with a big number from time to time. Pott failed to qualify the "Mr. Norm" car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.411 (speed unknown) was the second alternate. In June, Pott was in Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. He had problems in the first round, but his 8.28 advanced as opponent Al Bergler shut off on the line. In the semifinals, his 6.64/209.78 beat Tom Prock's 6.70/200 in the "Detroit Tiger." He faced Tom McEwen in the final, and the "Goose" blew his engine while Pott picked up the victory with a 6.66. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, his 6.29 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. He beat low qualifier Billy Meyer in the first round with a 6.27, but in the semifinals, his 6.95 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.57. The team qualified for the PHR Championships, which was pretty good considering that Bernstein, Dale Pulde, Tripp Shumake, Ron Colson, and others failed to make the show. Unfortunately, John lost early. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Pott ran 6.19 early in qualifying, but, figuring that wasn't enough, he came back out and ran 6.139/231.36. That still wasn't enough, as he ended up as the first alternate for the field. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. Where did they run 236.22? | This car changed hands many times, eventually landing in Jim Wemett's garage. - Tim Simplot

Notes: Tom started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals for the second year in a row. He qualified #6 and, in the final, beat Don Prudhomme for the victory. Tom was hoping for a repeat at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but it didn't happen. He qualified #15 with a 6.200/230.76 and a 6.27/230.76 in the first round, beating Billy Meyer's 6.32. In the second round, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," 6.32/234 to 6.92/150.25. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 at 6.201/225.56, and in round one, he beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.18/232 with a quick-leaving 6.247/229.59. In round two, he improved to a 6.126/233.76 but lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.06/227 in the "Blue Max." At the end of March, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the second NHRA Division 4 race, but he lost to John White's 7.29/226 in the first round, with a quicker 7.09/219.51. Hoover set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Houston's third NHRA Division 4 race. There were only three FCs at the race, and Tom soloed due to his top qualifying spot and ran 6.37/225.56 to advance to the final against John White. In the final, Hoover's Corvette developed problems, and he shut down, giving White the victory. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 6.10/236.84 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In round one, he ran 6.27/220.04 but lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.25/234. Hoover ran really well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.20/231.95 qualified #8, and in the first round, he beat Roy Harris, 6.22/230.76 to 6.60/186. Another 6.22/227.84 in round two topped Rick Johnson's 6.25/236, while in the semifinals, his 6.30/224.43 advanced when Ed McCulloch had a header come loose and shut down. He faced Beadle in the final, and Tom smoked the tires to a runner-up finish to the "Max's" 6.09/235. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 6.51/209.80. He then went on to win by beating Dale Tuter and Henry Harrison before stopping Larry Fullerton in the final with a 6.63/212.27. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, choosing to go to Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas, for the AHRA Nationals. His 6.11 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme's 5.92. But in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.89 that lost to John Collins' 6.29. He also didn't go to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Things went his way at Union Grove on July 27 for the NHRA Division Three race. A 6.21 qualified #2, and he went on to win, running 6.24 in the final to beat Frank Hawley. Tom's next NHRA national event was Indy, where he qualified #3 at 6.021/243.90. Unfortunately, he broke on the burnout against McCulloch in round one. He qualified well at Seattle, hitting 6.045/230.76 for the second slot. But again, first-round troubles set in, and he shut off against Gordie Bonin in the first round. Tom's qualifying prowess continued at Ontario, as his 6.123/234.98 grabbed the #2 spot. He beat John Collins in round one, 6.173/221.13 to 6.83/188, but Raymond Beadle got him in round two, 6.13/237 to 6.32/222.27.

Notes: Photo from 1980 Pop Rods, US 131 Martin, MI. Ran 6.12/234.37 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80 | Smith had one of his best seasons ever behind the wheel of Larry Coogle's Firebird. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.06/238.09. A 6.11/229.59 beat a crossed up Ed McCulloch in the first round. In the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to Dale Pulde. The following week (March 23), Paul was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There, a 6.31/230.76 qualified #1 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he lost to Pulde in the first round. He won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins in April, stopping Billy Meyer who broke in the final with a 7.05/217.91 (Top Speed). On April 27 Smith was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field that was tough to crack into as Don Prudhomme, Raymond Beadle, and Dale Pulde among others failed to do. But sitting in the top qualifying spot was the "Sting's" track record 6.02 at 238.09. Smith made it to the final by beating a tire-smoking, shutting off Kenny Bernstein with a 6.16/234. In the semifinals, his 6.22 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." That put him in the final against Meyer. Paul had problems and shut down to an 8.21/108.00 that lost to Billy's 6.66/215. At the rain postponed IHRA Springnationals, Smith didn't have a very good outing. He qualified last in the eight-car field and a 6.37 in the first round, lost to Roy Harris' 6.30. He won the NHRA Divisional race at Gulfport International on June 1 and a week later he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.19/230.76 qualified #7. He lost to alternate John Collins in the first round. Paul was at Milan Dragway in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.19. He lost to eventual winner Meyer in the first round. Paul won the IHRA Summernationals at Bristol. He qualified #2 with a 6.23/234.37 just behind Meyer's 6.20/221. These two would work their way to the final. Smith started by running 6.48 over Mike Mitchell and in the semifinals his 6.42 beat Beadle who was driving the new Omni bodied "Blue Max." In the final, Smith's 6.55/221.13 got him and victory over Meyer's 6.65/227. At the NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend, Paul's 6.47/226.70 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Dale Armstrong's 6.21/227. At the PHR Championships, Smith failed to qualify with a 6.37 (third alternate) best. He also lost early at the US 131 Funny Car Nationals in August where Tom McEwen beat him. Smith was disappointed at Indianapolis where his best of 6.12/234.37 failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals.

Notes: Arnie was at Drag City late in January for a best-of-three match race against Tom McEwen, who was driving the "Hemi-Cuda." Beswick got out on McEwen in the first race, but the Mopar drove around him to a 9.37 win over the Pontiac's 9.54. Arnie got out first in the second race as well, only to watch as McEwen came past again. Tom made it three straight over the Tempest. In March, Beswick ran 8.35 at Alman, GA, to reset Gary Dyer's 8.58 world record. Beswick was at Cordova on June 25 for a best-of-three match against Darrell Droke's blown SOHC Mustang. In their first race, Beswick's 8.90/160.42 beat Droke's 9.00/151. Darrell fouled in the second race, and Arnie won the match two straight. Arnie was at Cordova for a best-of-three match race against Larry Reyes' "Kingfish" Barracuda on October 2. In the first round, Arnie went into a wheelstand and shut down, losing to Larry's 9.09/138. In the second race, it was Larry who got out of shape and shut off, giving Beswick the win with an 8.87/163. In the third race, Beswick ran 8.83/158 to win the match when Reyes got out of shape again.

Notes: Did both the GTO and the Tempest run 8.30s in 1966? We need to confirm the best times for both cars. | Beswick was at Aquasco on July 31 for a best-of-five match race against Bill Lawton in the "Tasca Ford" Mustang. Arnie won their first race with a 9.61/153.05, but he fouled in the second, and Lawton evened up the score. In the third race, Bill ran 8.63/158 to beat the GTO's 9.85/150.75, and in the next race, Arnie's engine soured, giving Lawton's 8.77/159 the match race win.
