Notes: Dave started the year by qualifying third with a 7.52 at Irwindale's New Year’s Day Race. He smoked his tires in the first round, to an 8.25/129.10 that lost to Gas Ronda's 7.43/196. On Jan 4, he raced at the first OCIR All-Pro race. He won his first-round with a 7.46/200.89 over Marv Eldridge who shut off, but the drivetrain broke in the Challenger in the semifinal and Charlie Allen's 7.45/175 advanced to the final. At the second All-Pro event on January 18, he advanced past the first-round when Ray Alley broke, but again he had troubles when his transmission let go in the semifinal advanced Gene Conway. On January 26 he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show, but a 7.67/179 by Charlie Allen in the first round, beat his 7.73/186.22. At the third OCIR All-Pro event on February 22, he won his first-round race with a 7.41/189.07 over Danny Ongais' 7.69/193 in the Mickey Thompson Mustang. Unfortunately, he hurt the motor and was unable to run in the semifinal. He competed at Famoso on March 8 for the March Meet. He beat Bob Pickett's 7.88/182 in the first round, with a 7.86/189.46, but a semifinal 7.67/190.66 lost to Hank Clark's 7.65/195. The following week saw Dave at OCIR for an eight-car show. He qualified, but a broken blower manifold kept him out of the show. On March 28, he won the final OCIR All-Pro race. They ran 16-cars at the final event. In the first round a 7.74/157.61 beat Warren Gunter's VW at 8.01/177. Dave ran an easy single in the second round when Jim Adolph lost reverse after his burnout and was unable to run. An easy 8.16/177.86 got him into the final when Don Hampton fouled. A final round 7.56/196.07 beat Tom McEwen. On April 4, Irwindale held an eight-car show. Beebe finished runner-up after running 7.76/190.26 over Hampton's Corvette, and a 7.62/188.66 over Leroy Hales. In the final, both he and Mike Snively ran 7.65, but Mike got there first. He took another win on April 18 at an eight-car show at OCIR. Dave qualified #5 with a 7.45/188.67. A first-round 7.50/191.89 beat Adolph, and in the semis a 7.46/185.56 advanced when Ongais suffered a broken fuel pump. A final round 7.45/195.22 took the win when Gene Conway broke a rear end. He won at OCIR again on May 2 over a 28 car field for the Big Four Championships. Dave beat Jack Chrisman in the first round, with a 7.61/177.51, and Mert Littlefield lost to Dave's 7.54/178.92 in the second round. He got an easy win in the third round when Alley fouled. In the semifinal, he ran a 7.42/195.65 over Snively's 7.59/196. In the final he met Manuel Herrera driving John Lombardo's normally gas powered Corvette that had switched to Nitro for this event. Manuel lost a transmission and Dave won with a 7.71/185.18. Dave qualified #14 at the NHRA Springnationals in June, but a first-round 7.53 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.36. He also suffered a first-round loss on June 20 at the OCIR March of Dimes race. A 7.50/192.30 lost to Ray Alley's 7.41/193. Dave was back at OCIR on July 3 for the Nitro Championships. He beat Dean LaPole's "King Camaro" in the first round, with a 7.75/191.48, but he lost a close race against Snively in the second round. Mike's 7.46/180 beat his 7.48/195.22. Irwindale held a 16-car show on July 17 and an 8.05/171.10 qualified Beebe #6. He beat Chrisman in the first round, with an 8.02 and a 7.90 advanced past a fouling Bob McFarland in the second round. He singled in the semifinals when both John Lombardo and the break rule car of Larry Fullerton broke. In the final, Gene Conway beat him with Low ET of the meet, a 7.63 to Dave's 7.97. He returned to Irwindale on July 25 for a best two out of three match race against Dave Hough's "Nanook" AA/FA. It was a good match with some close racing. In the first race the fuel altered ran 7.59/196 that lost to Beebe's 7.55/190.66. In the second race, Hough evened the score with a 7.34/207 beating the Challenger's 7.55/193.12. In the final race, Hough wrapped up the match with a 7.35/206 beating Beebe's 7.97/190.66. Dave picked up a win on August 1 at the Irwindale Gold Cup Championships. He ran 7.48/201.54 (Top Speed) over Mert Littlefield, a 7.58/179.28 over Marv Eldridge, and a 7.56/176.12 over Dick Poll. In the final, he ran an easy 8.05/176.81 when Bob McFarland blew his motor on the line. At the OCIR Anniversary race on August 15, he beat Steve Bovan in the first round, with a 7.54/199.11, but he fouled away a 7.43/193.54 in the second round against Snively. Dave found himself in another final round on August 29 at OCIR for an eight-car show. Beebe advanced past a broken Bovan in the first round, with a 7.38/208.81. In the semifinals, Don Schumacher broke a rear end and once again Dave advanced. He faced Snively in the final and despite running a good 7.34/197.36 he lost to Mike's 7.33/201. On September 12, Irwindale held an eight-car show and Dave won his first-round race over Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" with a 7.53/192.70. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.88/197.80 that lost to Conway's 7.42/197. He set a 7.08 track record at OCIR in qualifying #1 for the Lions Anniversary Meet. He went on to win by running 7.19/193.13 over a broken Bob McFarland and 7.36/190.27 over John Collins in the "Atlas Oil Tool Car" in the semifinals. In the final he beat Frank Rupert driving Don Cook's Corvette with a 7.24/191.89. | The 7.53/189.07 were the best NHRA times.

Notes: After driving the successful "Super Ford" Torino in '68 and '69, Foster had this new 118" Logghe built Mustang for '70. The car used a stock displacement 427 SOHC with M/T rods and pistons. A pair of Joe Lunati cams were also used with the stock heads and valve train. Up top, a Cragar intake manifold supported the 20% overdriven GMC 6/71 blower. Enderle injectors were used. A Coleman and Taylor prepared C-6 transferred the estimated 1,500 hp back to the Detroit Locker with 3.70 gears. The Mustang weighed in at 2,180 lbs. Cammer-powered Mustang set a short-lived track record at Gainesville at 7.296 (193.13) on February 13 for the Gatornats. The record was beaten the same day by Larry Arnold. On April 12, Foster was at Delmar for a match race against Charlie Allen. Sid had handling problems in their first race, and his 11.54/168.66 lost to Allen, who blew a transmission at 10.22/125. The Mustang lost a transmission in the second race and slowed to 10.32/78.12 to lose to the Dodge's 8.01/188. Sid blew his engine in the final race, and Allen ran 7.94/182 to win three straight. He then went to Connecticut for another match race. This time he was up against Jimmy King, who was driving Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette. Both had problems on their first run, but Foster's 8.43/178.57 beat the 'Vette's 9.61/160. King fouled in the second race, and Sid saw it, so he coasted through for the win. In the final race, the Mustang broke while Jimmy ran a great 7.64/189. Sid took on "Jungle Jim" Liberman in a best of three match at a 1,000-foot track late in May. In the first race, the Mustang lost second gear and the race. In their second race, JJ took the win. They decided to run the third race anyway, and Liberman fouled while Foster got the win with a 6.14. Near the end of May, he was at Huntsville, Alabama, for a match race against Shirl Greer. In the first race, Shirl's 7.45 held off Sid's 203.77 top-end charge. In the second race, Greer broke, and Foster's 7.50/204.66 got the win. Greer could not return for the final race, so Sid soloed with a 7.42/205.87 for the match race win. - RH | Sid was the first alternate at the NHRA Springnationals (times unavailable). Columbus and Gainesville were his only two NHRA national events this year. Sidney also ran 6.18 at 1,000 feet at Humboldt IA 9/70 | Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970. – RT

Notes: Stock stroke motor. | Best NHRA ET was 7.263/196.07. Also 194.38 at Seattle 8/22/70. | Ray was at Lions for an eight-car show on June 27. His 7.49/194.38 beat Andy Clary in the first round, but his 7.67 in the semifinal lost to Dave Beebe's 7.49. On July 3, he competed at the OCIR Nitro Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.53/191.08 beat John Lombardo's 7.86/185. Marv Eldridge fouled against him in round two, so Alley advanced with a 7.51/189.07. His next opponent, Mert Littlefield, shut down early and Ray's 7.66/177.86 went to the final. He faced Arnie Behling, who was behind the wheel of John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. The final wasn't very close as Behling set Low ET with a 7.25 at 200 to easily cover Alley's 7.95/191.89. The following day, he was at Irwindale for the Fourth of July Championships. This was only an eight-car show, but Alley qualified. An opening round 8.53/135.13 advanced when Don Hampton crossed the centerline, but the Duster broke in its semifinal match against eventual winner Behling. Ray got another runner-up finish at Lions on July 11 for the AHRA All-American race. In the first round, his quick-leaving 7.83/179.28 beat Steve Bovan's 7.76/188. He actually lost to Behling's 8.02/133 in the semifinals when he ran an off-pace 8.81/187.50, but Arnie's Cuda had blown a rear end, so Alley was reinstated for the final. There he ran against Roger Wolford, who was driving the "Mako Shark" Corvette. The two had a good race, but Roger's 7.61/176 got to the stripe first before Alley's 7.65/193.54. Yet another runner-up finish came at OCIR on July 25 for the PDA Championships. In the first round, Ed Lenarth lost fire, giving Alley a 7.71/185.56 solo. In the second round, Danny Ongais lost fire in the M/T Mustang. Ray ran 7.51/185.56 to advance. Once again, he needed a little "help" with the "break rule" as he lost his semifinal race to Gene Conway. Alley's 7.79/186.33 lost to Conway's 7.47/192.71. But in the other semifinal race, both Lombardo and Dave Condit were able to get their cars down the track due to breakage, so both were disqualified. Alley now had to rerun Conway in the final. This time Ray had troubles and shut off to 11.52/99.77 while Conway got the victory with a 7.65/181. He ventured to Kent, Washington, for the Seafair Nationals on July 31. He ran times of 7.85, 7.50, and 7.48/193.12 to reach the final. It was an all-Duster final as he faced Ed McCulloch. The two had a great race that saw Ed's 7.05/210 win over Ray's quicker 6.99/199.48. McCulloch also stopped him at the third NHRA Division Seven race held at Bakersfield on August 9. This time it came in the semifinals. A week later (August 15), he was at OCIR for its anniversary race. It was a sixteen-car field, and Alley's opening round 7.53/192.71 beat Condit's 7.70/196 in the "L. A. Hooker." But in round two, he fouled away a 7.49/192.71 against Eldridge.

Notes: Ed McCulloch was especially strong in '75. He had really shown his hand in '72 as the dominant FC of the season, but the '73 and '74 seasons were nowhere near as good. He started the '75 season at the Fremont New Year's Day Funny Car meet. He and Raymond Beadle had a tire-smoking battle in the first round, with Ed's 7.21 advancing over the "Blue Max's" 7.44. Unfortunately for McCulloch, he broke on the line against Jim Dunn in the second round. McCulloch was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, and although he qualified, he blew the engine and was unable to run in eliminations. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.44, but in the first round, his 6.72/197.36 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.61/206. The next stop came at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. It was a twelve-car field, and McCulloch's 6.31/210.77 qualified #3. He got some payback over McEwen in the opening round, where his 6.40/219.51 beat the "Goose's" 6.86/164, but in the second round, the car broke on the line against John Lombardo. He skipped the NHRA Gatornationals but then came back stronger than ever. At Irwindale's big Coca-Cola 32 car show, Ed was running well. A 6.62 in the first round advanced easily, and in round two, his 6.47/223.88 beat Clarence Bailey. He improved in round three, where his 6.33/217.91 beat Gary Southern driving the "Voodoo" Pinto. But due to it getting late, track management decided that whoever ran the best ET in winning their semifinal race was declared the winner. The trouble was, as well as Ed had been running, one car had been running a bit stronger - the Monza of Don Prudhomme. So, while Ed won his semifinal race with a 6.44/225.00 (Top Speed), Prudhomme was declared the winner with his track-record 6.25, beating Gary Burgin. Things got better fast; McCulloch then went to Seattle for its opening show of '75 and won. Not only did he win, but he also reset the track record twice, first with a 6.27 (at 218.97) and then again in the final with a 6.24/226.13 (Top Speed) in the final over Mike Miller in the "Green Elephant." He then made a stop at Portland, where he won again. Ed had held the track record at 6.37 before the race, but once again, he reset it a couple of times. Not many cars could run three 6.2s in a row at this time, but Ed did it here. A first-round 6.25 (at 218.97) beat Ken McLean, and in round two, he really wowed them with a 6.22 at 217.91 to beat Jerry Ruth. For the second straight race, he faced Miller in the final, and the results were the same: Ed's 6.27/218.97 beat Miller who smoked the tires. Another win came at the Ignitor Funny Car Championships at Firebird Raceway. There he set low et at 6.77 and beat McEwen and Prudhomme on his way to a final round showdown with Ruth. It was a close final with both running 6.82 (Ed at 211.68), but Ed got the win light. On April 27, he scored yet another big victory, winning the Oregon National Open at Portland. He had Low ET at 6.28 in qualifying #1, and he stopped Prudhomme in the final. The month of May started with McCulloch in the victory circle at Fremont's Northern Nationals. There he stopped Jake Johnston and Neil Leffler (on a holeshot) before beating Dunn in the final with a 6.27/224.43. He was back in Seattle on May 31 for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. A 6.52/211.76 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Prudhomme. An opening round 6.76/191 stopped Nick Harmon, while a strong 6.39/205.01 beat Gordie Bonin's 6.61/226 in the semifinals. The 6.39 came at a price as he broke the rear end and could not race Prudhomme in the final. He had more problems at Portland for the Rose Festival Drags, where he again broke in the final against Kenny Goodell. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, Prudhomme out qualified him (6.29), but Ed's 6.41/223.88 got the #2 spot. In the first round, McEwen smoked the tires against him, and Ed's 6.45 moved on. In round two, he ran another 6.45 at 205.47 to beat Burgin's 6.58/221. His ride ended in the semifinals, where Beadle's 6.44/223 beat his 6.51/202. The following week, he was at Byron for its Manufacturer's Meet. All twelve cars made two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Gene Snow returned to driving for the first time since his back surgery and made his return a winning one by stopping McCulloch's 6.95/181.81 in the first round with a 6.84/214. Ed won his second race with a 6.90/183.67 over Pat Foster driving the "Chicago Patrol," but his ETs failed to get him into the final. It was then on to Connecticut, where Ed set Low ET at 6.42 before breaking in the final against Bill Leavitt. He was in another final round, this time at Maple Grove's Fourth of July race. Unfortunately, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires against Jim Liberman. | Ed turned a 6.25/225.00 at OCIR Manufacturers' Funny Car Championship on 11/1/75. - RT

Notes: Photo from 1990 Nationals. Scott qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.38/269.94. A first-round 5.39/268.49 advanced when Jerry Caminito fouled, but in round two he slowed to 5.44/250.62 and lost to Bruce Larson's 5.31/271. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.42/269.38, but he lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. Things didn't go so well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals and the best time Scott was able to run (6.72/135.48) failed to qualify. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, things went better but not much. He qualified #15 with a 5.64/257.21, but he lost to John Force in the first round. Another first-round loss came at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where Kalitta qualified #11 with a 5.56/262.00 before losing to McCulloch.

Notes: Rick Howard photo at 1996 US Nats, Indy. Fogged in by his own burnout smoke, Whit qualified 6th at 5.08/300.50 and was dropped by Del Worsham in round one. | Whit Bazemore got a new ride for '96. He replaced Gordie Bonin behind the wheel of the "Smokin' Joe's" Mustang. He ran really well at Pomona for the season opening NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #4 with a 5.13/283.82. An even better 5.12/296.93 advanced in the first round, when Tom Hoover broke, but in round two his 5.28/265.48 lost to John Force's 5.11/297. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Whit’s 5.17/290.69 qualified #6. He beat Al Hofmann in the opening round with a 5.20/273.22 and a second round 5.31/265.40 took out Gary Bolger. Unfortunately, he lost to Chuck Etchells in the semifinals. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.17/280.63 qualified #9, but he fell off to a 5.84/195.48 in the opening round that lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.21/268. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Slick 50 Nationals. Bazemore qualified #14 with a 5.30/232.61. A first-round 5.45/228.54 did him no good against Hofmann's 5.09/298. The next event was the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. It was only an eight-car show and Whit qualified #7 with a 5.32/281.07. His 5.38/281.42 in the first round, lost to Pedregon's 5.22/293. A week later (April 21), he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. The team was stuck in the 5.30s, only running a best of 5.38/279.06 to qualify #10. A first-round 5.37/286.89 narrowly beat Tim Wilkerson's 5.39/219. In round two, opponent Jeff Arend broke and Whit advanced with a 5.58/200.26. He then made his best run of the weekend, a 5.34/286.07, but it wasn't enough to beat Tony Pedregon's 5.05/296 in the semis.

Notes: Kenny started the year winning at the OCIR Grand Premiere race. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he didn't do quite as well. Bernstein ran 6.342/222.22 to qualify #15, and he beat Dale Pulde in the first round, but he lost to Gary Burgin in round two. Burgin got him at the next NHRA meet as well, the Gatornationals in March. Kenny qualified #10 with a 5.95/241.93, but a first-round 5.94/245.90 lost to Gary's Low ET run of 5.78/238. Things went more Bernstein's way at Darlington the following weekend (March 20) for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.14 and set Low ET with a 6.13. He beat Pulde in a semifinal tire smoker and then met Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" in the final. Kenny took the win with a 6.21/227.27 over Beadle's 6.39/215. At the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17 at Atlanta, Kenny's best of 6.08/234.98 (second alternate) failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Yet the following week (April 24), he qualified easily for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.02 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He didn't make the finals at the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk either, but he did set Low ET at 5.88. A 6.02/222.77 qualified #4 in the eight-car field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Another 6.02 at 242.58 beat Pulde's 6.14/238, but an off-pace 6.26/226.69 in the semifinals lost to the eventual winner Al Segrini's 6.00/241. He followed the NHRA tour to Columbus for the Springnationals at National Trail. Kenny ran a 5.96/246.57 to qualify #4 but slowed to an off pace 6.25/237.46 in the first round, that lost to John Force's 6.01/246. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car field with a "bump" of 6.01. The rough spell continued, with Bernstein failing to make the show at the NHRA Grandnationals, another eight-car show. Things went much better at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There he not only qualified, but he made his way into the final before losing to Beadle and taking the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Summernationals, Kenny made the show with a 6.02/245.23 (#11). He beat a tire-smoking Tom Anderson in the first round, before slowing to a 6.14/236 in round two that lost to Rick Johnson's 6.05/240 in the "Custom Body" Omni. He was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in late July. Kenny qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.05/234.37 in the thin air. He beat Pulde's 6.29/229 in the first round, with a 6.08/237.46. In the semifinals, an off pace 6.33/217.91 lost to the race's eventual winner Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler" at 5.97/233. In August, he won over an eight-car field at Bonneville Raceway. He met Force in the final, and his 6.23/227.85 got the victory over John's 6.25/227. Bernstein got his first NHRA win of the year at Brainerd on August 21 for the Northstar Nationals. He ran 5.88/245.23 to qualify #2. In round one, a 5.96/244.56 beat Pulde, and in round two, a 5.97/238 advanced when Ken Veney fouled. He got an easy run in the semifinals when Mark Oswald broke in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but he still ran 5.97/243 for the win. In the final, he was up against Hawley. Kenny gunned him down with a 5.92/246.57 over Frank's 5.96/244. Photo from '83 Cajun Nationals. Longtime Bernstein crewman Mike Guger poses with the Bud King.

But in round two, he lost to Mike Dunn. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.44/267.45 qualified #8. He lost early there. Another early loss came at the NHRA Supernationals at Houston. He qualified #11 with a 5.45/262.39, but Dunn stopped him again in the first round. Photo from Indy 1991.

Notes: Kalitta competed at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 6.57 qualified #13, and he lost to Prudhomme in the opening round. Shortly after that (July 8), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where his 6.24/222 qualified #14. In the opening round, Scott's shut-off 6.53/157 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.99/205. Scott only ran one NHRA national event in the funny car this year, Brainerd. He was the fifth alternate with a troubled 9.305/88.58. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984.

Notes: Force failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At the Phoenix Winter Championships, his 6.32 qualified #3 for the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the opening round and shut off to 11.09 in a loss to Bryan Raines' 7.54 in the "Impulse."On April 2, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.36 qualified #4. John's 6.46/212.76 in the opening round beat Jake Johnston and 6.50/215.31 in the semifinal, defeated Jim Dunn's quicker 6.44/212. He faced John Lombardo in the final, and Force's Corvette broke, so he had to watch as Lombardo soloed for the win. At the next NHRA Division Seven race, held at OCIR in May, John's 6.18/226.70 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.08/240. But in the first round, both he and his opponent, Dave Condit, smoked the tires. Dave's 6.53/213 got the win over John's 6.65/215.31. Force qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field at Beeline Dragway on September 10 for the final NHRA Division Seven race. A 6.70 got him the spot. In the opening round, he slowed to a 6.97/212.26 that fell to Pat Foster's 6.76/229. Shortly after that, he was at OCIR for the Dr. Pepper Funny Car Championships. Twelve cars were competing, and all were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars advancing into the final. Force shut off early in his first-round race against Tom McEwen, and in his second race, he ran unopposed as his opponent, Tripp Shumake, had his parachute fall out on the line. John still "went for it," but the car went into a wheelstand, and he had to shut down. John qualified #7 at the World Finals, the only NHRA race he qualified for in 1978. His nice 6.170/228.43 lined him up against Gordie Bonin in round one. But Gordie put a big holeshot on John and took the upset win, 6.287/234 to 6.220/227.27. | I think all of John's cars were Plueger built until Steve stopped building customer cars. - Tim Simplot | Before the Wendy's sign was expanded above the rear wheel well, it was, in small letters just above the tire, 'Michael Moya, Attorney At Law,' with mini scales drawn in. This year, Force turned the corner with the new Corvette, a 3-axle Chaparral, new crew cab. - Joe Moore

Notes: The car debuted in 1968 with Chevy power and different owners, but Van Sant drove. In 69, he took over the project and added a 354 Chrysler to power the car to several local wins. Mike served as team captain at OCIR Manufacturer's Championships as part of the Wacky Racer team, basically, cars whose power plants didn't match their body styles, e.g., Hemi-powered Chevy, etc. The car ran in 1970 throughout the East with Mike Crowe, where it crashed at Atco Dragway, although Van Sant also drove. This car deserved more recognition as it was a top runner. A 7.98 qualified Mike eighth at the HRM Championships on March 16, and a first-round 8.09/185.18 advanced when Larry Fullerton fouled. A second-round 8.04/187.29 beat Steve Bovan's 8.06/179, but Pat Foster's 7.64/191.89 beat his 7.96/187.89 in the semis. Lions held an eight-car show on March 22, and Mike qualified fifth with a 7.94, then went 8.08/188.67 over Dave Beebe in the Super Chief, followed by a 7.71/191.08 over Leroy Hales. He singled for the win in the final with a 7.71/190.67 when Ron O'Donnell lost to fire on the line in a Don Schumacher 'Cuda. Another eight-car show was run on April 13 at Irwindale, and Mike's 8.06 qualified sixth, but he fouled in round one. At Lions on April 19, he qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 7.75. He lost to Danny Ongais in the first round. Twenty-one cars showed for 16 spots at Irwindale on April 26, and the Invader qualified second with a 7.72/187.50. A 7.68/191.48 got him into the second round, where his 7.82/190.66 beat Randy Walls' 7.89/183. Ed Lenarth smoked the tires in the semis, and Van Sant's 7.71/191.48 advanced to the finals, where he lost to Ongais' 7.37/193.54 in the M/T Mustang with an 8.01/181.44. At the OCIR Manufacturer's Open on May 3, Mike qualified #1 on the GM team with a 7.51/194.80, which held up for Top Speed. He won his first and second-round races with sub-par times when his opponents had problems, and then he lost to Rich Siroonian in round three. Back at Irwindale on May 17 for an eight-car show, Mike's 7.71/190.26 won the first round, and he and Dave Beebe both broke in the semis with the Corvette out-coasting the Charger. But Mike could not repair it for the final, so Beebe got back in on the break rule. Still, at Irwindale for another eight-car show on May 30, Van Sant's 7.55/196.06 advanced to the semis, where he lost fire. The next day (May 31) at OCIR for the Funny Car 500, Mike's 7.61/195.65 qualified fourth, but he got crossed up and lost in the first round. He then went to Seattle for the Travelon's Fuel Championships on June 8 and qualified #1 with a 7.72/196.06 and ran Low ET and Top Speed with a first-round win at 7.68/196.56 before losing in the semis to Mike Miller's holeshot 8.09/180 to the Invader's 8.08/184. On June 21, at the Lions' AHRA Grand American Championships, Mike won over Gary Gabelich in an all-Corvette semifinal, 7.41/195.65 to Gary's 8.14/181.81. He was to face Ongais again for the money, but no final race was run due to the lateness, and they split the money. Still, at Lions for an eight-car race on June 28, Mike set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 7.48, and a first-round win at 7.63/196.07 set Top Speed, but a blown motor in the semis ended his chances for a win. Another semifinal finish came at the Irwindale July 4 race when Ongais' 7.39/198.66 beat Van Sant's 7.60/194.80. Ongais' 7.42/192.72 beat the Invader again in the semis at Irwindale's eight-car show on July 12. Mike did set Top Speed at 196.92. At the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19, the Invader team was off its game, qualifying eight with an 8.01. In the opening round, his 8.14 beat Warren Gunter's 8.68. He shut off on the line in the second round against Gary Gabelich in the "Beach City" Corvette. Irwindale held a sixteen-car show on July 26, and once again, Mike set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.37/197.10, but the pass cost him an engine, and he could not run in eliminations. On August 2 at Lions for an eight-car show, a 7.56/195.22 got him into the semis, where engine problems put him out. He had problems again on August 30 at Lions for the Drag News Nationals. This time, he broke in the first round against Leroy Hales. Van Sant finished runner-up on September 1 at an eight-car show at Irwindale when he got crossed-up in the final and lost to Johnny Wright's Corvette at 7.61/191. Earlier, he qualified second with a 7.72 and ran 7.65/186.36 and 7.97/187.50 to make it final. At OCIR for an eight-car race on September 6, he qualified last at 8.85, but then his 8.12/167.59 won his first race, but then the car caught fire from oil leaking from a valve cover gasket. The safety crew extinguished the fire. His 7.85/161.87 won in round two, but the car went up in flames again. Mike had had enough and parked the car for the night. Another eight-car show at Lions on September 13 saw Mike's 7.51/176.12 win his first-round race, but Gordon Mineo's 7.55/193.13 beat his 7.52/185.56 in the semis. A 7.85 qualified the Invader fourth at an eight-car show at Irwindale on September 21, but he lost to Steve Bovan's 7.71/194 Camaro in the first round when he got crossed up. A well-deserved victory came at Lions on October 4 when Mike set both Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 7.24/199.11, beating Mineo's 7.85/161. A semifinal round 7.36/185.56 beat Marv Eldridge, whose Corvette nipped the guardrail, and a final 7.47/196.07 beat Ed Carter's Corvette. On October 11, Van Sant showed up at OCIR, wheeling an M/T Mustang. Bob Smith replaced him in the Invader. The switch was short-lived as Van Sant was back in the car on November 7 for the Manufacturers' Meet at OCIR, where he was the top qualifier for the wacky racers with a 7.36. He won all three of his races with a 7.48/194.80 over Terry Hedrick, a 7.80/187.50 over Ongais, and a 7.47/194.80 over a transmission-exploding Don Schumacher. At Irwindale on November 23 for a 32-car Funny Car show, Mike won his first race with a 7.89/190.26, but a blown rear end finished him in round two. On November 29, Lions held an eight-car show, and Larry Reyes 7.21/205.47 in the Hawaiian beat Mike's 7.30/200.44 in the first round. And then, on December 6 at OCIR, the Corvette curse came to haunt the team. After running a qualifying 7.40 (good enough for third), the motor blew, causing a fire, and the Corvette's body was blown off the chassis. Mike was OK, but the car was not, and the first alternate, Ray Alley, replaced him in the field. - Ron Howard

Check DragStats for best times after this is determined. | Jim qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.23/275.73. He went on to win the event by running steady 5.2's and then taking on John Force in the final. His final round 5.26/273.80, beat Force's 5.32/275. At NHRA's second race of the season, the Arizona Nationals, Jim qualified #2 with a 5.28/271.90. A first-round 5.32/268.41 beat Gary Clapshaw, but he slowed to a 5.40/268.17 in round two that lost to Gary Densham's holeshot aided 5.43/267. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Jim again qualified well, ripping off a 5.22/272.72 for the #2 spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Caminito in the first round. Jim made it into another final round at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.25/275.81, and in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.02/167.09 but still won when Caminito smoked his tires even worse to a 6.69/140. In round two, he improved to a 5.20/279.85 to beat Paul Smith. In the semifinals, another consistent 5.22/270.51 beat Gary Bolger's 5.27/273 to advance into the final. Once again, he faced Force in the final, but their roles were reversed from the Winternationals. Here John set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.15/289 in the final to stop Jim's 5.27/275.39. These runs were all made with Epler's own car. Set Top Speed at Denver at 273.72.

Notes: The car was built in 1968 to replace the scary Dart. Snow's first Logghe car. I think this started with a B&M Torqueflite, but by the end of summer, it had a Crowerglide and began running 200 mph. I know this car ran in the 7's; we need to check the best time. The 205 at OCIR was at the Mfg. Meet, so it is accurate. - Bill McLauchlan | On August 17, at Houston, Snow hit 200.88 for the first 200 MPH funny. At Wichita, 202.70 was the new mark. In October at Irwindale, a 196.50 was good enough for a new track record. - Ron Howard 7.65 at San Antonio in Dart or Charger? - Danny White; Photo: Hemmings Muscle Machines (Sep. 2007): p. 33 - MB

Notes: Nickname: "The Professor." Added Blower, Sponsor. Early in June, Chadwick was one of four cars running in a match race at LaPlace. He ran a personal best (to this point) of 7.89 to beat a fouling Leonard Hughes at 8.06. In his second race, he shut down early to an 8.78 that lost to Tom Smallwood's 8.13 in the "Kingfish." The third race saw Chadwick doing battle with Della Woods' new Charger. The Camaro took the win with an 8.30/181.80. Kelly was at Amarillo on June 23 for a best-of-three-match race against Gene Snow. He was having transmission problems and lost two straight. Snow's transmission gave out in the third race, and Chadwick won with an 8.36/189.46. The following week (June 28), he was at Detroit for the Midwest Super Stock Funny Car Championships. A 7.98/182.92 advanced past the first-round when Don Schumacher lost fire, and in round two, an 8.04/169.81 beat Hank Garcia's 8.44/159 in the "Car Shop" Camaro. In the semifinals, he fouled against eventual winner Fred Goeske. On July 4, he was in Oklahoma City for an eight-car show. His 8.01/183.28 beat the "Site Brothers" 'Cuda in the opening round of eliminations. In the semifinals, his 7.93/191.80 beat Leonard Hughes' 8.08/190. It was an all-Chevy final as he faced Mike Burkhart's similar Camaro in the final. Chadwick got the victory, running Low ET with his 7.81/191.14 getting the best of Mike's 7.98/190. He raced Paul Stefansky in a best of three match at Houston in July. Kelly won all three races when Paul's car developed transmission problems. Chadwick's times were 8.13/185.18 in the first and only race, and he ran two solo passes of 8.45/181.80 and 8.44/185 to sew up the match. Hr ran a confirmed 7.79 at Detroit and 7.93/188.28 at Bristol 9/20/68. His '68 record had him race 68 times, and he won approximately 75% of his races.

Notes: Mike started the year by running 5.89/245.90 to qualify #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Billy Meyer's 5.85/242 in the first round, with a 5.91/241.28 before losing to John Force's 5.75/252 in round two with a 5.90/250.00. In May, he was at Bakersfield, where his 5.82/257.87 (Top Speed and new track record) qualified #2 behind Force's 5.76/243. Dale Pulde broke a transmission against him in the first round, and Mike advanced with a 5.81. He got out of shape in the semifinal, and his 7.87/117 lost to John Martin's tire-smoking 6.78/199. Dunn ran NHRA Bandimere CO 7/86. Best 1986 NHRA national event times of 5.656/265.72 at the World Finals. Ran in the first nitro match race at Ennis (against Billy Meyer himself). Both cars ran 262 to show the track's potential. Also ran 257.28 at Indy 1986. Photo from Indy 1986. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9.

Notes: Pulde first drove Mickey Thompson's Grand Am at St. Louis in early May. He made his debut in the car a successful one as he won over an eight-car field, stopping Ronnie Runyan's Chevy-powered Vega in the final. Shortly after this, he was at the AHRA Grand American at Green Valley, but he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme in round two. He was at the AHRA Grand American at Dragway 42 on May 24, but the car broke in the first round, against Jim Nicoll. Pulde went to Century 21 Raceway in Denver for the AHRA Springnationals on June 3. He used an Ed Pink-built stock-stroke 426 Hemi for this race, and it paid off. Dale beat Ron O'Donnell in the first round, while a quick-leaving 7.40 in round two beat Rob Williams better 7.34. He picked up to 6.77 in the semifinals over Raymond Beadle. This set up a final-round meeting with Art Ward. Dale took the victory with a 6.81/201.79. He was also declared the winner at a four-car show at Tri-City. He won all three of his races and ran a best of 6.68/216 over Gary Bolger, Kenny Safford, and Dick Rosberg. At the Rockford Manufacturers Meet, Pulde showed that he could drive by beating Don Schumacher's quicker 6.66 in round two with a 6.75. But in the third round, he beat Shirley Muldowney, but then the motor let go, and the car went up in flames. Pulde got the car stopped, and he managed to get out. The Grand Am was badly burnt, but Dale was OK. It didn't take Mickey long to fix the car, as on August 5, the team was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. It was an easy field to qualify in as Dale's 7.46 qualified #13. He beat Gene Snow in the first round, setting up a round two meeting with Prudhomme. Pulde tried hard, but his 6.72 lost to the "Snake's" 6.51. At the AHRA National Challenge race, Dale ran 6.68/217.39 to qualify #14 in the 32 car field. In the first round, he picked up to 6.63 over Pat Foster in the "Barry Setzer" Vega. In the semifinals, he lost to Prudhomme. The following week (September 3), he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. A 6.404/223.32 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show. Impressive considering that almost 50 cars attempted to qualify. Unfortunately, an off-pace 6.905/225.56 in the first round, lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.62. Pulde was at Fremont on October 14 for the AHRA World Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.43 qualified #4. A 6.45 in the opening round beat Gene Snow's off-pace 7.24, and he picked up to 6.37 in the second round to defeat Sush Matsubara's 6.45. Unfortunately, the Grand Am was shut off on the line for leaking oil in the semifinal. Pulde had to watch as Gerry Glenn made a solo to advance into the final. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale's East/West Funny Car Championships. Pulde smoked the tires hard in the first round, where his 10.54 lost to Prudhomme's 6.74. Ran 6.45 at Bristol. Where did the team run 231.95?

Notes: Tom Ridings got the Joe Pisano ride for 1979. The team qualified #13 at the Winternationals with a 6.368/231.36 and then lost a close first-round race to the team's former driver, Pat Foster, in the Super Shops car, 6.251/234.37 to 6.383/226.70. In April, Tom was at OCIR for its big 64 car show. He set Low ET at 6.15, but in the final, his 6.88 fell to Raymond Beadle's 6.28 in the "Blue Max." Their next NHRA event was Seattle, where Ridings claimed the bump spot at 6.30 with a booming 238.09 mph. He won a thrilling 6.240/235.60 to 6.240/238.72 first-round battle over Tom McEwen but fell to Jim Dunn in round two, 6.140/232.55 to 6.490/184.80. The team qualified #10 at the Ontario Finals at 6.415/224.43 and claimed a 6.679/223.32 to 6.723/230.76 upset over Kenny Bernstein in round one. In round two, John Force won a close but off-pace battle to put them out, 7.238/217.39 to 7.271/205.01. We need confirmation of a 6.00 ET the team reportedly ran this year. Where did that occur? I recall hearing about it but do not know where it was run.

Notes: Rosberg failed to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals, but the following week (March 18), he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he lost early. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Dick's 6.250/231.95 qualified #10, but an opening round 6.357/212.76 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.13/231 in the "Blue Max." He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.23/230.17 (Top Speed) and an easy 6.50/211.79 advanced in the first round when George Johnson fouled. In the semifinals, he beat Jimmy King with a 6.32/220.50, but he broke on the run and was unable to run in the final against Al Bergler. He was the third alternate at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with a 6.150/235.60 best.

Notes: This was the former John Lombardo machine. The 6.15/227 times seem very quick. They did not occur at an NHRA national event. We need confirmation. Dennis failed to qualify at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals (times unavailable but slower than 6.56). That was Dennis's only NHRA national event this year.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Hoover entered the '89 season with a new carbon fiber body on his McKinney chassis. He continued to run the AFT clutch that had served him so well in late '88. His 82 year old father, George, continued to serve as crew chief. Tom started the '89 season by qualifying #9 with a 5.42/268.73 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He faced low qualifier John Force in the first round, and beat him with a 5.39/260.11 to Force's 5.46/275. In the second round, be lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the next event, the Supernationals at Houston, he qualified #10 with a 5.43/264.23 and once again, met Force in the first round. Again, Hoover stepped up with a 5.36 beating John in the first round, for the second straight race. Unfortunately, just like at the first event, Hoover lost in round two. This time, he smoked the tires and shut off, giving Scott Kalitta an easy (7.60/150) victory. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #10 with a 5.45/264.16 getting the spot. He lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.49/244.75. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round, but lost to Force in round two. It was on to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where a 5.36/264.78 qualified #5. He beat John Martin in the first round, but then smoked the tires in round two and lost to Bernstein. At the Cajun Nationals, he lost in the first round, after qualifying #11 with a 5.57/263.15. Things went much better at the Springnationals. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.44/252.66, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. In that race, Don overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover hustled (?) to a 5.67/183 win. In the second round, he faced Mark Oswald. Mark broke after his burnout and Tom ran a 12.00-67 for the win. In the semifinals, Jim White smoked the tires and a 5.55/242 got Tom into the final. His luck ran out in the final when Larson's 5.42/275 dropped the Firebird's smoky 6.79/135.89. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.54/256.77 qualified #5, and he beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.57/251.18. In the second round, Bernstein's 5.47/270 beat Tom's 5.68/211.29. The ninth race on the NHRA schedule was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Hoover ran a 5.38 to qualify #5, and he beat Etchells in the first round. In the second round, he got out of shape just off the line and lost to Prudhomme. His dad, George Hoover, showed that he could tune a car in the thin air of Denver for the next race, the Mile High Nationals. Tom ran a 5.76/248.61 in qualifying #8, even out qualifying Prudhomme. In the first round, be beat Gary Ritter, but in round two, he lost to Ed McCulloch. At the California Nationals, Tom qualified #10 with a 5.47/256.70. But once again, McCulloch got him, this time in the first round. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals, a 5.47/273.63 qualified #10. This time Prudhomme beat him in round one. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. Tom qualified #12 with a 5.66/261.55 and in the first round, he improved to a 5.54/265.48, but it wasn't enough to get around Prudhomme's 5.49/261. Hoover almost didn't make the field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He ran a best of 5.55/259.36 in qualifying and that just held for the "bump" spot. In all, he made four qualifying runs; the times were 5.72, 5.69, 5.55, and 5.58. In the first round, he improved to a 5.42/238.28 that beat Bernstein's tire smoking 7.80/111, but in the second round, he went into a wheelstand and shut off against Etchells. The following week (September 10), he was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. Tom qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 5.54/265.01, but in the first round, he blew a motor and lost to Johnny West. At Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, a 5.41/253.09 qualified #10. He fouled against Oswald in the first round.

Notes: Ran a questionable 6.49 and an impossible 6.25 at US 30, Gary, Indiana. | Bobby Wood was at Miami in January for a sixteen-car show. He qualified third and was running 6.9s, but he failed to reach the final. He was back at Miami on February 13 for its Winter Championships race. A 7.57/193.96 qualified #6 in the eight-car show, but he lost to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the first round. He was at Lakeland on March 6 for the IHRA Winternationals where his 7.17 qualified #11. Unfortunately, he fouled in the opening round against Clare Sanders in the "Ramchargers" car. Wood then went to Atlanta for a best of three match race against Larry Arnold in the "Kingfish" 'Cuda. In their first race, Bobby caught Larry napping and his 7.20 beat the 'Cuda's quicker 7.03. Bobby wrapped up the match in the next race where his 7.10 won over Arnold ailing 11.20. Larry had some satisfaction in the last race as he won with a 6.87 when Wood fouled. Also ran 6.75 at Columbus.

Notes: Billy ran 6.453/227.84 to DNQ at 78 NHRA Pomona Winternationals. Graham then went to Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show. A late 6.21 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.25 in the opening round, but he got back into the show on the "break rule."In the semifinal, his 6.20/223.88 defeated Gene Snow. Once again, he faced Hoover, only this time it was in the final. Unfortunately, the Monza got out of shape, and Billy shut down while Hoover ran 6.15/232 for the win. At NHRA's second Division Four race held back at Green Valley, Billy ran 6.23/225.56 to qualify #2 behind Snow's 6.22. These two would end up racing each other in the final. A 6.25/224.43 beat an engine blowing, Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" round one. Graham made an easy solo in the semifinal when Billy Meyer broke a rod on his burnout. In the final, it was Graham who had problems and shut off, giving Snow the victory at 6.23/218. In June, he was the first alternate at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. His 6.96/207 best just missed the 6.95 "bump" for the eight-car field. He also was the first alternate at NHRA Columbus at 6.39/213.27. Shortly after that (June 18), he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field at San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals. In the opening round of competition, the car got out of shape, and he shut down against Tom Hoover. On July 4, he ran 6.61/211.76 (Top Speed) to qualify #3 at the AHRA Ozark Nationals. In round one, his 6.86/196 defeated Dale Tuter. He improved to 6.55/210 in the semifinal that just got around Tom McEwen, who popped the 'chute early on his losing 6.56/194. He faced Gene Snow in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Graham get the victory with a 6.54/205 over Snow's 6.58 runner-up effort. Billy was at Spokane in August for the AHRA World Finals. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.33/220.58. An opening round 6.65/218 beat John Collins, who got out of shape and shut off. But in the semifinals, his 6.51/216.85 lost to Hoover's 6.39/225. He qualified #11 at NHRA Indy with a nice (career-best) 6.174/215.31. In round one, he lost to Ron Colson's 6.18/231 with an off pace 7.77/105. | You could see the clutch disks sliding out from under the car on the ABC Indy telecast of the 7.77 loss. This was after Graham did a wheelstand in qualifying, and the body came off (ND). - Joe Moore
