Notes: "Eliminator" became "Dyno Don's Eliminator" after Oglesby took over the driving chores at the start of the '69 season. The deal with Nicholson was that they split the earnings 50/50. It didn't start that well when he failed to qualify at the AHRA Winternationals. Frank was a "good guy" to Arnie Beswick when the two showed up at Houston for a best of three match race in March. Arnie blew a rear end on his burnout preparing for their first race. Oglesby could have singled for the first win of the match, but instead, he waited while Beswick replaced the rear with one borrowed from Don Gay. Once again they lined up for their first race and Arnie's 8.41/175 beat the Cougar's motor-blowing 8.53/155.17. Frank was done for the day while Arnie soloed for the match race victory. On April 13, he ran Bruce Larson in a match race at Cecil County. He broke in the first race losing to Larson's 7.79/191 and was out of competition for the day giving Bruce a solo run to win the match. Aquasco held its fourth annual Funny Car Invitational on May 4, and Frank beat an out of shape Leonard Hughes in the first round. But in the semifinal against Tommy Grove, he had problems and was forced to shut off on the line. In June, he raced at an eight-car show at New York where a first-round 7.78/188.66 lost to Jim Liberman's Low ET of 7.49/193. But Liberman broke so Frank got back in on the break rule. He faced Lew Arrington in the semis, but fouled away a 7.85/197.36 to Lew's 7.68/196.50. On June 22, he was at Houston for a best of three match against Shirl Greer. Shirl fouled in the first race and Frank won with an 8.01. In the second race, Oglesby beat Greer with a 7.84/185 to win the match two straight. The two were going to have a third run anyway, but the Cougar's brakes failed and Bobby Wood filled in for him. Late in August, he raced at an eight-car show at Detroit Dragway, but in the first round, he lifted a blower on an 8.56/150 pass against Larry Reyes. That was it for the Cougar that day. He raced at Nashville's King of the Funnies meet on September 13, where he beat Henry Garcia in the Car Shop Camaro before losing to Mike Burkhart in the semifinal.

Notes: Started the year in Permatex livery. Changed to Fast Orange. First career NHRA final round at Memphis, TN '92. Curt Swartz photo from Bristol, TN, 1992. | Whit qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.39/264.78. He could not run in eliminations, and the first alternate, Mark Sievers, took his place in the field. A 5.56/261.24 qualified #14 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. In the first round, a troubled 6.67/147.14 got around an equally troubled Dale Pulde. He lost to Richard Hartman in round two. Houston held the third NHRA event of the season, the Supernationals, where Bazemore ran 5.37/263.92 to qualify #11. An off pace 5.78/178.42 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.72/193. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals on March 15. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 5.82/233.10. In the first round, he and Hoover ran 5.62 (Whit at 255.10), with Tom winning.

Notes: Tommy Grove's "Going Thing" 1969 Ford Mach I Mustang was one of the best Ford-powered funny cars of all time. Grove was loyal to the 427 SOHC engine and Ford from mid 1965.rnrnThis was after his 3 year FX winning tenure with Dodge’s 426 Maxwedge & Race Hemi from 1962.rnrn Logghe Stamping Company built the 69 chassis, and Paul Shedlik built and painted the Mach I Mustang body. Larry Shinoda designed the paint scheme. Master tin man Al Bergler did the aluminum work. Grove debuted the car in late 1968 and raced it through 1970. Tommy ran 7.28 at 203.69 in 1969 to become one of the first 200 MPH funny cars. Grove achieved notoriety for cracking 200 mph while at the same time rumored to be experimenting with an exotic fuel (hydrazine?) Tommy raced the car until the end of 1970. The "Going Thing" was replaced when it became outdated. (Photo courtesy Mike Ditty. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from Bill Duke and James Ibusuki). | Ford-powered Funny Car's won more than their share of races in '69, with Danny Ongais driving Mickey Thompson's Mustang to many victories and Gas Ronda's Mustang also winning a few events. Dick Loehr also won a couple of events. But for '70, there was only one strong Ford-powered car, and that was Grove's. Thompson switched his cars to the unproven Boss 429 engine, Ronda had his career end with his fire at the AHRA Winternationals, and Loehr went Pro Stock racing. Grove, like Don Nicholson in Pro Stock and Pete Robinson in T/F, was Ford's strong holdout. He won many races and matches but also seemed to set track ET and speed records at will. His season started at the Irwindale New Year's Day race. Tommy qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.48. He got sideways in round one, but still won with an 8.45/192.76 over Bob Pickett. In the second round, Danny Ongais ran Low ET of the meet with a 7.42/196 over Grove's 7.71/194.38. On January 18 at OCIR for their second All-Pro race, he beat Randy Walls in the first round, and a 7.55 in the semifinal beat Johnny Wright, but in the final against Gene Conway, his trans let go, and he had to settle for runner-up. He did better at the AHRA Winternationals on January 25 with a big win. He ran a first-round 7.58 over Mart Higginbotham, who fouled. A second-round 7.5 beat Tom McEwen's new Duster at 7.89. In the semifinal, a 7.58 advanced over Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian, who fouled away a 7.46. In the final, his 7.54/196.65 beat Jake Johnston's 7.67/198.23 in the Blue Max. He broke again in the semifinals on February 15 at the Fremont Northern Nationals despite turning 7.37/195.22 and 7.39/195.22. On April 5, Aquasco held an eight-car show, and Tom won a close 7.90/184.80 to 7.91/182.92 first-round race over Al Graeber. He lost in the semis to Bobby Wood's 7.68/193 with a 7.91/183.66. He faced Don Prudhomme in a match race at Capitol on April 11, and he won his first race with a 7.50/193.12 over Prudhomme's quicker 7.35/202.24. Prudhomme came back to win the next two rounds and the match. Grove was supposed to be at Connecticut the next day for a best of three match against Hank Clark in the "Chapman" Camaro, but he failed to show. He did better at his match against Malcolm Durham on May 10 at US 13 in Delaware, where he beat Durham three straight with a 7.71/189.46 best. In May at the Super Stock Nationals, he lost early when Larry Reyes' 7.38 beat his 7.60. Late in May, he was at Southeastern Dragway for a four-car show. He beat the "Invader" Corvette in his first race with a 6.38 on the 1,000 feet. Track. In his second race, he improved to 6.08 to beat Curtis Wasson and win the match. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.25/201.34 in winning at Minneapolis on May 30 for an eight-car show. He beat Ron Rivero's 7.41/187.50 in the final with a 7.29/198.67. And on May 31, they ran again at Minneapolis, and again Grove won. He set Low ET with a 7.32 and beat Bryan Teal's (Nelson Carter) 7.47/196 in the final with a 7.44/193.96. At Tri-City on June 7, he lost to Larry Arnold in the first round, when he got out-of-shape and ran off the track. In June, Arnold got him again in the first round, at Martin, Michigan, for an eight-car show where Grove set Top Speed of the meet at 205.01 but lost to Larry's 7.19/202 to his 7.48 182.55. Bruce Larson faced off with Tom on June 27 at Maple Grove. In the first race, Bruce's 7.75/173 won when Grove blew a head gasket. Larson beat the backup car of Ken Poffenberger in the second race, but by the third race, Grove had fixed his Cammer and beat Larson's 7.49/190 with a 7.39/190.26. He lost the match but had the satisfaction of having the Low ET. On July 11, for Capitol's King of King's meet, Tom's first-round 7.42/188.28 beat a fouling Don Schumacher (7.46/170). A second-round 7.16/201.78 beat Roy Gay's 7.44/197, but in the semifinal, Prudhomme's 7.16/206 beat his 7.33/198.22. At Blaney in July, Grove set both ends of the track record at 7.17/205. In July, Edgewater held an eight-car show, and a first-round 7.40/196.12 beat Sid Foster's 8.44 out-of-shape pass. He lost to Bryan Teal's 7.60/154 in the semis when he had to lift and shut off. Grove ran a 7.50 best over Leonard Hughes at the Rockford Manufacturer's meet. He showed up with a new unpainted car and only won one of his three races. He won again on July 26 at the Dallas Funny Car Championships. The track was 900 feet, and Grove held the track record at 5.95 going into this race. A first-round 5.97 beat Houston Platt's 6.28. A second-round 5.95 beat Dick Harrell, and in the semis, he ran another 5.95 over Charlie Allen. In the final, his third 5.95 beat Larry Arnold. In August, the two foes had a match race at Suffolk, where Arnold won the first race with a 7.51/161 when Grove fouled away a 7.42/195.64. He then took the next two wins with runs of 7.17/200.00 and a track record 7.13 at 202.60. On August 10, he was up against Lew Arrington for a match race at Epping. Tom's 7.25/196.92 beat Lew's 7.54/196.06 in the first race, and an even quicker 7.22/201.78 over Arrington's 7.58/186 made it two straight for the match race win. Another win came at Minnesota on September 6 over an eight-car field. A first-round 7.31/194.38 beat Charlie Allen's 7.37/197, and in the semifinal, a 7.29/197.80 beat a shutting-off Terry Hedrick. In the final, his 7.27/201.34 beat Roger Lindamood's 7.45/204.54. He was at Suffolk on September 13, where he ran 7.03/203.60 in the opening round over Arrington and a second-round 7.00/205.46 beat Paula Murphy. He was to face Gene Snow in the final, but the car failed to fire. Tom finished the year with another victory on October 3 at the Dixie Finals at Blaney, where he ran Low ET and Top Speed at 7.17/205 before beating Pat Foster in the Hawaiian in the final. — Ron Howard

Notes: The "Goose" had one of his best seasons in '84. It didn't start so well at the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #8 in an eight-car show with a 6.52 and lost to Mike Dunn's 6.28/230 in the first round, with another 6.52/214. But at the next event, the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway, he finished runner up to Kenny Bernstein's 5.98/248 with a 6.07/236.84. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he lost to John Lombardo in the first round. He then ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.83 at 247.25 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals. Another 5.83/253.52 in the first round, beat Bob Gottschalk, but in the second round, the Corvette broke, advancing Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." He clicked at the next race, the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington, although he only ran a 5.98 to qualify #6. He eased past the first-round but then picked up the pace with a 5.87/245 in the second round that beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.04/245. In the semifinals, a 5.89 beat Billy Meyer's 5.88. In the final, he ran his old teammate, Don Prudhomme, and the "Snake" had problems while Tom motored to a 5.91/248.61 victory. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, Tom qualified #5 with a 5.86/252.10. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but broke on the line in the second round, advancing Bernstein. He ran well at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but failed to reach the finals. Tom ran several 5.80s at 250 plus this year, but his best times came in qualifying at Indy with a 5.804/254.23. Notes: Hoover qualified #6 at Pomona with a 5.38/265.40 for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, in the first round, an even better 5.37/275.14 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.36/269 in a close race. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.31/273.55. He beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, but in round two, his 5.47/266.27 fell to Pulde's 5.32/268. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals at Houston. Tom again qualified well, running a 5.34/260.64 for the #5 spot in the field. He beat Whit Bazemore in the first round, with a 5.40/259.21. But it was a costly win as Hoover hurt his motor and could not run Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Probe in round two. The "Showtime's" next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show, and Tom qualified #5, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to the eventual winner Chuck Etchells. He lost in the first round, the following week (March 18) at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.51/253.02, but Caminito beat him in round one. Atlanta hosted the fifth race of the NHRA season, the Southern Nationals, and Tom qualified #9 with a 5.44. He was starting a habit that he would have loved to shake: that is, losing in round one. Paul Smith stepped up to a 5.29 to drop him in that round. Tom's best times this year were 5.311 at Phoenix and 275.65 at Englishtown.

Notes: Goldstein was at Pomona for the twice rain-delayed NHRA Winternationals. 58 Funny Cars were attempting to qualify, and the track was terrible. Leroy ran a 7.4 and was the #5 qualifier. A first-round 7.82 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.47. Times were more "normal" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #5 again with a more respectable 6.49. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, before losing to Don Schumacher's 6.34 in round two with a 6.61. Goldstein won the Division 4 Opener at LaPlace, setting Low ET and Top Speed at 6.73/217.39 before beating Paul Smith in Fred Wells'Charger in the final with a 6.74/216.86. In late April at Dallas for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals, Leroy qualified both the team's Top Fuel car and the Funny Car first in both classes. A 6.48 qualified the "Cuda #1. He also won both classes as well as he won Top Fuel and ran 6.60 in the first round, of Funny Car over Beebe in Larry Huff's car, a 6.52 beat Shirl Greer in round two, and a semifinal 6.57 beat Preston Davis. He met up with Mike Snively driving the "Mr. Ed" Satellite in the final. Unfortunately, the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda broke, and Snively soloed for the win. He was runner-up at Lubbock Dragway in Texas for the Division 4 race held there. He smoked the tires in the final and lost to Jim Nicoll. At the NHRA Springnationals, Leroy qualified #10 but lost to Beebe's 6.69/210 in the first round, with a 6.91/213.77. In July, the team was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where a 6.59 qualified #12. A first-round 6.61/222 beat Gene Snow's 6.81/173. In round two, Leroy advanced with a 6.64/178.57 over Tom Crevasse. In the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.51/224.43 when Dale Emery broke. In the final, he met Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer owned Vega. Leroy got the victory with a 6.74/214.79, beating Pat's 6.78/223. Goldstein was in Canada on August 3 for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.74. In the first round, he got a single when Ken Achs broke in the "Pacemaker" Vega. Leroy ran 6.96 to move into the semifinal. He ran a 6.70/218.44 but lost to Emery's quick-leaving 6.71/215. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.49/228.42 qualified #15 (tough field)! A first-round 6.373/229.00 beat Clare Sanders' 6.52/225 in the "Ramchargers" Demon. In round two, he advanced with a 6.66 when Schumacher had a bad vibration and shut off early. Both he and Don Prudhomme ran 6.52's in the semifinals, Leroy at 229, but the "Snake" got the win.

Notes: Tom started the '77 season by running 6.69/214.28 at the PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. He qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.73. A first-round 6.75/206.42 beat Cyril Leon and in round two, a 6.80 took care of Chris Lane. In the semifinals, both he and Tripp Shumake smoked the tires to identical 7.10's, but Hoover got there first. He lost to John Collins in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran well again, lasting until the second round before Raymond Beadle's holeshot in the "Blue Max" beat his 6.19 with a 6.27. On May 1 he was at the AHRA Springnationals. He beat Dave Benjamin in the first round, before losing to eventual winner Billy Graham in round two. He qualified #1 at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals in June with a 6.39/216.87. An off pace 7.13/106.90 lost to Gene Snow in the first round. Tom qualified #12 for the NHRA Springnationals, and although he failed to reach the finals, just qualifying was tough as Ed McCulloch, Jim Liberman, Tommy Ivo, Johnny White, and others failed to qualify. He won the Memorial weekend race at US 131 Martin, Mich., stopping Gary Burgin in the final. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Tom qualified #7 with a 6.27. He beat Frank Mancuso's Vega in the first round, and in round two, a 6.45/216 beat a tire-smoking Burgin. In the semifinals, Hoover had trouble and shut off giving Don Prudhomme an easy (6.31?) run into the final. Later in July he won the Division 5 race at Brainerd. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42 on July 31. He qualified #1 with a 6.31/225.00 and in the first round, a 6.45/221.67 beat Stan Bowman. In the semifinals, his 6.58/221.13 beat Graham's quicker 6.55/217. In the final, he took the victory with a 6.30 (Low ET) at 225.00 over Snow's 6.59/193. On August 4, he was back at Englishtown for the Funny Car Race of Champions. All cars ran two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Hoover shut off early in his first race and lost to Les Cassidy while his second race saw him run a 6.55/225 over Gordon Mineo's 6.54. His time wasn't good enough to make the final. He won the NHRA Grandnationals up in Canada. He qualified #2 with a 6.25/223.88 in the eight-car show. A first-round 6.35 beat Al Segrini and in the semifinals, he singled after Billy Meyer was unable to show after a first-round fire in which Meyer received second-degree burns to his hands. Tom ran a 7.17/122 single to get into the final, where he faced off against all-conquering Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" slipped to a 6.76/172 and that's all it took for Hoover to snag the victory with a 6.24/226.13. The following week (August 14), he was back at US 131 for the PHR Championships. He ran well, beating Denny Savage with a 6.37 in the first round, and he beat Bowman in round two. In the semifinals, a strong 6.20/221 lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.23/234. His next win came at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 21. He qualified #2 with a 6.50/213 and in the final he beat Beadle's 6.53 with a 6.40/215. He had a disappointing showing at Indy for the US Nationals when he failed to qualify. Almost 40 cars showed for the sixteen spots so he was not alone on the outside looking in. He didn't go to Seattle for the Fallnationals, but he did go to Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. He qualified on the "bump spot" and lost early. Overall, it was a very successful season, probably the best to this point in his racing career. His best NHRA national event times were 6.193/229.59 at the Winternationals. Where did Tom run the 6.17?

Notes: Tom qualified #4 at Pomona with his best NHRA speed of the year, 6.320/227.84. He fell off to an 8.93/92 in round one, that fell to Charlie Therwhanger's 6.40/212. Prock qualified #12 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.55/221.13. He reached the final by beating Gordie Bonin in the first round, with a 6.62/224.43, and in round two, he fouled away a 6.68 but got a second chance when his opponent, Kosty Ivanof, crossed the centerline. He stopped Raymond Beadle's 6.78 in the "Blue Max" in the semifinals with a 6.68. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme, but Prudhomme's engine was hurting. So Prock was too single for the win, but his car broke a rear end. Both teams were given extra time to repair. Tom could not repair, so the "Snake" spit and puttered to a 6.52/172 for the victory. His next race was the IHRA Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood. There a 6.56 qualified #4 in the eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.67 beat Shirl Greer. Unfortunately, he lost in the semifinals. He won a best of three match race against Ivanof in New England. In the first race of the match, Prock lost a blower, and Kosty won with a 6.71, but Tom came back to win the next two rounds and the match with a best of 6.74. He was at Atco for the CARS Magazine race, but he lost to Tommy Grove in the first round, when he had problems and shut down to 9.03/130.62. More problems followed at Columbus. Tom qualified #12 for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.56/220.04, but in his first-round race against Dale Emery, the car coughed up its blower and caught fire. Prock got it stopped and got out OK, but the car was badly burned. It wasn't long before the team was up and running again, and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Prock put the car into the field with a 6.55/220.04 (#13). He beat Bob Pickett driving Mickey Thompson's Grand Am in the first round, and a 6.66/222.77 in round two stopped Tom McEwen's 6.86/189. In the semifinals, he ran Ivanof, and a 6.64/210.77 put Kosty's 6.78/222 on the trailer. He faced "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and once again, the car let him down. Tom slowed to 11.49 in a runner-up finish to Liberman's 6.49. He did win the Englishtown Free Girls Funny Car night event, a final round 6.43 (Low ET) at 194.80 beat Dodger Glenn's 6.69/218 in the final. Tom made a third NHRA National event final at the Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #2 with a 6.48/223.32, just behind Prudhomme's 6.46/207. These two would meet in the final. Prock's first-round 6.54 beat Bonin and a semifinal 6.45/217.39 took out Pat Foster's tire-smoking 7.08/221 in the "Chicago Patrol.” In the final, Prock slowed to 7.08/121.08 in a loss to Prudhomme's 6.45/224. The team was the fourth alternate at Indy, running 6.486/225.56. They qualified #5 at Seattle (6.446/223.38) but lost a close round one race via holeshot to surprising local Richard Rogers, 6.61/218.44 to 6.60/198.23. Tom qualified #4 at Ontario for the World Finals with a 6.230/222.77. In round one, he beat Bob Pickett, 6.66/168 to 7.10/225, but broke against John Lombardo in round two. Tom ran 6.25/225.00 at the Orange County International Raceway Manufacturer's Meet 11/75. AKA Utica Flash. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio.

Notes: Coors was so happy with McEwen in '80 that they stepped up with more cash and a tractor-trailer for '81. Tom was the fourth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 6.31/230.76. He did better at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.368/226.70 qualified #7. An opening round 6.42/216.86 beat Bryan Raines' 6.47/220. Unfortunately, a 6.32 in round two lost to Bob Pickett's 6.27. The following week (March 15), he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 6.29/232.55 (Top Speed) qualified #3. But in round one, the car went into hard tire shake and he shut down to a 13.11 in a loss to Raines' 6.34. He was back at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional in May. It was another eight-car field and Tom's 6.41/218.97 qualified #6. He beat Tom Ridings in round one, with a 6.47/231.36, but in the semifinals he had problems and shut off against Craig Epperly. Things went his way on May 30 at NHRA Western Regional at Bandimere. He ran 6.55/214.79 and 6.36/223.88 to beat Clint Miller and Rob Williams to reach the final where he faced Gary Densham. McEwen's 6.35/229.00 got the victory over Densham's 6.48/209.

An engineer by trade, Dick used his job connections to get sponsorship and assistance for his racing operations. In 1967, Loehr had a new Mustang funny car built. The Max Curtis Ford "Stampede" was much lower than most of its competition. That car debuted with a 427 SOHC engine, which later was replaced by a reliable 392 Chrysler Hemi. Loehr ran a best of 7.86 at 189.70 with the car at Orange County. The car was replaced a by new, lighter Mustang in 1969. Dick Loehr eventually left funny cars for Pro Stockers. - BS | Confirmed 7.95 and 8.08 at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on 11/25/67. - BM

Notes: Dave Braskett and Gary Burgin had raced a Camaro in '71. For the '72 season, they changed to this 116" Buttera-built Vega. Not only did they change the body, but for the '72 season, they also changed from the 392 to a stock-sized, Keith Black built 426. It retained the independent front suspension the Camaro had used and, out back, a Detroit Locker carrying 5.43 gears. Gary was at OCIR in January for the All-Pro Opener. He won the eight-car show by beating Jim Dunn's 6.94/212 in the final with a 6.82/213.27. He didn't do quite as well at the second OCIR All-Pro event, as he lost to Ray Alley's 6.85/209 in the first round, with a 6.94/210.28. Things went bad at the Lions Grand Premiere on January 28. He qualified #2 with a 6.72, but he crashed into Joe Winters' car in the first round, and Burgin's car flipped. He was OK; the car, not so much. The team attempted to qualify at the Pomona Winternationals but was a DNQ (times unavailable). Gary was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. He qualified #5 with a 6.87, but a first-round 7.06 lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.67. Another loss to Ruth came not in the first round but in the final at the Las Vegas National Open on March 5. Burgin's final round 7.11/207.84 lost to Ruth's 6.97/207. Gary qualified #9 at NHRA Indy at 6.569/225.00 but lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.46/229.59 with a 6.605/217.39. We need to validate the 6.50/226 numbers; were those just the abbreviated Indy numbers? Gary was an NHRA record holder for a short while. Also, 6.66 at 222.22 in winning the All-Pro Series in 1972 and ran 6.61 at OCIR.

Notes: This car made its debut at the 1972 NHRA Nationals were it qualified fourteenth with a 6.617/217.39. There were several magazine articles on this car and the March 1973 issue of Drag Racing USA states that the best recorded ET and speed for this car was a 6.50/224.50. At the 1972 OCIR Manufacturers Meet Al qualified for the Ford team and won all three of his races that evening. He and Billy Meyer were the only members of the Ford team that won all of their races, these wins insured that Ford won the "Manufacturers" team title. - DH | Featured in the 2/73 issue of Hi-Performance Cars. - RT | OCIR Mfg. Notes: Durham spent the off-season completing a new Logghe-chassised Camaro that proved to be one of his best rides. He clocked 7.5-second elapsed times regularly in 1968 and broke the 200-mph barrier in 1969. - NHRA | Malcolm was at Orlando for the second annual East Coast Funny Car Championships on February 18. He qualified for the show but hurt his motor and could not run. On May 5, he was at the Funny Car Invitational at Aquasco, but he fouled against Clare Sanders in the first round. Durham was at Cecil County for the Fuel Showdown on May 18. He was caught napping on the line by Arnie Beswick in the first round, when Malcolm's 8.16/180 lost to Beswick's 8.34/156. He faced off against Beswick in a best two out of three match race at Aquasco on June 16. Malcolm had a bad day losing two straight. In the first race, he lost fire, and Arnie soloed to a win. In the second race, his throttle linkage broke, and he lost to Arnie's off pace 9.74/124. He was at Cecil County for the CARS Magazine All-Star International race in July. In the first round, he ran an 8.43/176 that lost to Frank Federici's "Shark" at 7.95/187. Another match race was run on August 4 at Gary, Indiana. His opponent was Gary Dyer in the "Mr. Norm" Charger this time. Once again, Malcolm had problems and lost two straight. The first race saw Dyer's 7.74/180 just outright beat Durham's 8.35/150. In the second race, he blew a transmission and lost to Gary's 7.71/185. Durham did much better at Connecticut in early September when he faced off against Bill Lawton. Malcolm won the first race when Lawton's Mustang blew an engine. Bill could not run, and Durham soloed for the next race and won the match. The "Strip Blazer" Camaro became stronger and stronger as the season progressed. He won at his home track, Aquasco, for the first time on September 22. It was supposed to be an eight-car show, but Clare Sanders arrived late and Tommy Grove had no car, so only six cars ran. An 8.03/175.43 in the first round, beat Mel Perry, while in the semifinal, Durham got the odd-lot single and ran 8.12/178.21. In the final, he faced Bobby Wood, and his 8.20/175.78 got him the victory over Woods' 8.26/174. On September 29, he ran a best of three match race against Larry Reyes in the super tough "Super 'Cuda" at Englishtown. Reyes won the first race with a 7.71/190 when Durham lost a transmission and slowed to an 8.60/117.34. In the second race, the Camaro won with an 8.03, and in the third race, Malcolm wrapped up the match with a 7.94/183.66. Early in October, he beat Shirl Greer two straight at Houston. Every pass he made beat the former track record. He ran 7.69/186 over Shirl's 7.81 in the first race and a 7.63/188 beat a crossed-up Greer in the second race. Malcolm made a solo third pass and set a 7.57 track record at 182.92. This photo was Malcolm's first flip-top funny car, '68 Logghe chassis, B&N Fiberglass Camaro, Bergler tin, supercharged Chevy 427, B&M Turbo-Hydramatic 3 speed auto.

Notes: Dale Pulde drove the car in late 75 and early 76. Chapman Automotive ran iron block 426, then switched to Donovan. Pulde started his season at Fremont for the Nitro Bowl race. All cars made three runs there. In his first race, his 6.87/155.44 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.60/218. He solo'ed in the second round with a 6.53, and in the third, he smoked the tires to a 7.19 loss to Tommy Ivo's 6.66. He also competed at the Irwindale Grand Premier race, where he qualified #16 with a 7.94. Unfortunately, he broke on his burnout in the opening round, giving eventual winner Bob Pickett a solo into round two. Dale qualified #12 at Pomona, 6.316/199.11, but lost in the first round, to Jake Johnston when he lost a blower. That was Dale's last NHRA national event appearance until the World Finals, where he showed up in the Plueger & Gyger Mustang.

Notes: Ron qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 6.20. In lost to Gordie Bonin's new Firebird in the second round. He won the Sacramento race of Champions. He qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but his opening round 6.46 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.35. Early in June, Ron was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified third in the eight-car field with a 6.48/222.77. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and was unable to make his first-round race against Rob Bruins in the "Green Elephant.” Not long after that, the "Hawaiian" was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Colson won his first-round race, but once again he hurts some parts and was unable to make his second round race against Don Prudhomme. The following week (June 18), Colson was at Martin, Michigan’s Funny Car Opener. He made it into the final where his 6.22 finished runner-up to Prudhomme's 6.13. The following day, he was at Byron for the Manufacturer's race. The "Snake" got him again, this time in round two where Ron's 6.42/222 fell to Prudhomme's 6.30/233. He was back at Martin, Michigan, in July for the third NHRA Division 3 race. He reached the final against Billy Meyer only to lose a 6.22/219 to 6.34/218.44 race. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.180 qualified #5. But in the first round, he lost in a tire-smoking battle against McCulloch. His 6.82 lost to the "Ace's" 6.75. Ron and Tommy Ivo were at Edgewater for a best of three match race in August. Each had won one race each and Colson had lowered the track record to 6.31, but the third race between the two was never run. The "Hawaiian" always seemed to run well at the PHR Championships at Martin. In '77, the team did alright. In the qualifying round, Ron’s 6.40 beat Burgin's 6.44 and in the next round, Ron’s 6.52 fell to Dale Pulde's 6.20. He also ran 6.22 at Indy 9/77. Best NHRA national event ET was the 6.180 at Englishtown and 233.16 at the Ontario World Finals.

Notes: On July 9, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. George didn't win or even make the final, but he did set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.21/226.10. George ran some nice 6.20s this year in NHRA competition, but his best run was in qualifying at Sanair with a 6.180/230.76. Best speed came on a 6.24/231.36 qualifying run at NHRA Englishtown.

Notes: This was the only Ford bodied car the "Chi-Town Hustler" team ever ran. Pete Williams came out of a six-year retirement to drive for the team. He had last driven an Funny Car back in '72 when he filled in for Pat Minick who was sick for a couple of races. Pete qualified #6 with a 7.58/195 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A first-round 6.89/213 lost to Denny Savage's 6.65/202. In April the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Williams' 6.43/209 qualified #3 behind Dale Pulde and Savage. He soloed with a 6.64/191 in the first round, when Ken Smith broke on the line. Pete also had an easy run in round two when Al Bergler shut down. Pete advanced with a 6.79/210. But in the semifinals, he had problems and shut down to an 8.04/157 that lost to eventual winner Savage's 6.56/225. Napierville held an Funny Car show and Pete had one of the four cars there. He smoked the tires and lost against Savage in his first race, but in his second race he set a Napierville track speed record of 231.26 in beating Paul Smith's "Entertainer". He won the IHRA Dixie Nationals in Atlanta in May. Pete qualified second with a 6.36 and ran times of 6.54 in round one, a 6.45 in round two, and a semifinal 6.51. In the final, he beat Savage's 6.47/226 with a 6.45/215.82. He won the next IHRA event as well, the Springnationals at Bristol. There he qualified #4 with a 6.38. A first-round 6.26 beat Paul Smith. In round two, he beat Mike Miller with a 6.49/206.42. A semifinal 6.36/213.77 beat Les Cassidy's ailing Monza. In the final, he met Savage again in the Powers Steel Camaro. This time, Pete took the victory with a 6.42/222.77 beating Denny's 6.63/196. This win put him in the IHRA Funny Car points lead. A few days later (June 21), the team was at Englishtown for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills event. Williams ran 6.18/212.26 in his first race over Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" and a 6.45 won his second race when Dodger Glenn broke in the "Frantic Ford". Gary Burgin had run 6.16 earlier and the final came down to these two. It was a close race, but Williams' 6.20/224.43 got the victory over Burgin's 6.23/232. The next IHRA race was in Milan in July for the Northern Nationals. A 6.31/205.01 qualified #2. But in the first round, he faced Savage and he had problems and shut off on the line, giving Savage a solo into round two. The next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. There were 21 cars there and all ran the first-round with the eight lowest ET's advancing into round two. Pete just made the second round with his 6.35 being the slowest of the eight that qualified. In the next round, the car went into a huge wheelstand and lost to Bob Pickett. That showing was followed up with a runner-up finish at the New England Championships. Pete was running well, beating Bruce Larson in the semifinals with a 6.18/209, but another 6.18/209 in the final lost to a quick-leaving Billy Meyer who won with a 6.22/230. It was then back to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. Pete qualified #4 in the eight-car show and he beat Al Herring in round one. A semifinal 6.47 beat points contender Savage and moved him into the final against Pulde. Pete ran 6.51 in the final, but it was good for the runner-up spot as Pulde got out on him and won with a 6.52.
