Notes: I saw a picture of the NW-local Korzan Monza Bonin drove in the early 80s when SIR and Portland were AHRA from '81 to '83. I was in SoCal at the time, thinking those rainy mooks have to wait till April for nitro, and Orange County jumps off the first Saturday in January. - Joe Moore

Ran 232.99 at Amarillo (altitude factored). Bobby qualified #6 at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals with a 6.417/227.27. But he came back out to make another pass and lost a motor in the lights. He stuffed the car into the guardrail. He was OK, but the car was not.

Notes: Tom was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 6.130/236.84. He lost to low qualifier, Kosty Ivanof in the first round, 6.130/236.22 to 6.330/235.60. He went to Bakersfield for the March Meet where he lasted until the semifinals before getting out of shape and losing to eventual winner Jim Dunn. The following week (March 16), Ridings was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #14 at 6.213/234.98 and in the first round, he got around Billy Meyer who crossed the centerline. In round two, Ron Colson got out of shape in the "Hawaiian" and shut off against him. Tom advanced with a 6.357/185.18. In the semifinals, Ridings' off-pace 6.466/180.36 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.115/207.85 in the "Blue Max.” In April, Ridings was at Fremont for the NHRA Divisional race. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.14/223.32, but in the first round, his sleepy 6.44/147.05 lost to Sherm Gunn's 6.72/215. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as the Fremont race was rain postponed to the same weekend. At the OCIR Divisional race on May 17, he qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.35/235.60. A 6.46/230.76 in the first round, narrowly lost to Jim Moore's 6.44/224. The team had a great outing at NHRA Indy. Tom qualified #4 at 6.039/243.90. He then defeated Jim Dunn in round one, 6.176/235.60 to 6.231/233.16. Round two saw Tom take out Len Imbrogno, 6.158/240.00 to 6.307/199.11, and he defeated Billy Meyer in the semis, 6.122/236.22 to 6.466/188.67. Joe and Tom were the quicker car in the final as well, but cagey Ed McCulloch got the win on a holeshot, 6.271/231.95 to 6.242/236.84. Tom qualified #7 at the Fallnationals with a 6.220/228.42. He beat a broken Sherm Gunn in round one, with a 6.050/238.72, but shut off to a 12-second loss to Don Prudhomme’s 6.080/238.09 in round 2. The team made it into a tough program for the Ontario Finals with a 15th qualifying 6.288/233.16. They lost to Roy Harris in round one, 6.376/226.13 to 6.469/226.70. Notes: Started year in the Trans Am, which had best times of 5.374 at 276.49. Best times for the Thunderbird body were 5.369 at 266.74. Keeping only one entry for this team in 1989 with combined times. Art started his '89 season by qualifying his Firebird #4 in the eight-car field at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event with a 5.49. He made it all the way to the final before losing to Ed McCulloch. At Pomona, he qualified #15 with a 5.51/266.27 for the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 5.54/260.94 beat Scott Kalitta's 5.78/218, but he lost to Jim White in the second round. At the second NHRA event of the season, the Supernationals a 5.37 qualified #8 and this time he made it into the semifinals, after getting around Kenny Bernstein who broke a rear end in round two, where he ran Scott Kalitta, but smoked the tires and lost. He qualified #7 with a 5.40 at the Gatornationals on March 19. Once again he made it into the semifinals after stopping Mark Oswald in the second round with a 5.45/270. In the semifinal, Art broke on the line against Ed McCulloch. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in early April and Art qualified #6 in the eight-car field. The track was damp from rain and all cars were only allowed one shot to make the show. Hendey got in with a 6.94/185.51. Not to bad for the conditions considering that McCulloch and Mark Oswald failed to qualify and only got in as alternates. Art lost to John Force in round one. He was in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals where he qualified #2 with a 5.39/268.97, but he lost to Force in the first round, again. The NHRA tour's next stop was at Memphis for the Mid South Nationals. Art used a 5.47/242.65 to qualify #10, but lost to Don Prudhomme in the second round. Art then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he qualified #8 in the eight-car field with a 5.74/257.57. He faced McCulloch in the first round, and he crossed the centerline. The following week he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.56/262.54 qualified #7, but he lost in the first round. He took another first-round loss at the NHRA Springnationals where after qualifying #10 with a 5.50/263.75 he lost to Bruce Larson's 5.25/271 with a 5.75/193.88. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.65/256.11 qualified #12, and he beat McCulloch in the first round, with a 5.63/260.79. In round two, both he and Kalitta fought for traction and Hendey's 6.95/163.51 came out on top. This matched him up against Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" car in the semifinals. Art ran a 5.85/250 that lost to Oswald's 5.60/238. Next stop was at Milan Dragway for IHRA's Northern Nationals. Art qualified #4 there, but he lost to Jerry Caminito in the first round. His bad luck continued at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Although he qualified #11 with a 5.45/269.62 he once again lost early. This time it was eventual winner Bernstein who stopped him in the first round. On July 23,Art showed up in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in his T-Bird. His 5.83/239.80 qualified #9, and he lost to low qualifier Bernstein in the first round, again. He made it past the first-round at the NHRA California Nationals. Art's 5.47/271.16 qualified #8 and in round one, his 5.53/270.10 beat a tire-smoking Richard Hartman. In round two, both he and Oswald smoked the tires with Mark's 6.49/239 getting the win light over his 6.87/201.34. | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Hendey qualified #3 in the 8 Car field with a 5.632/267.06 & Faced #6 qualifier Whit Bazemore in round 1. Hendey ran 5.845/247.93 in his losing effort to Bazemore's 5.756/252.81.

At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 6.21/234.37 but his 6.43/194.38 lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 6.15/238 in the first round. He barely made the show at the Gatornationals, qualifying #16 with a 6.143/241.28. The car went into a wheelstand in the first round, and he shut off, losing to Dale Pulde. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. This was only an eight-car field, and his 6.64 best was well off the 6.16 "bump." The following weekend (May 3), he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified #3. He failed to reach the finals. John went to St. Louis early in June for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4 and then ran 6.56/210.76 in the opening round to beat Larry Gould's quicker but later 6.51/221. He improved by two tenths in the semifinal to a 6.36, but that wasn't enough to beat Don Prudhomme's 6.26. Columbus was his next stop for the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #10 with a 6.23/226.70. He upset Prudhomme in the first round, where Collins' 6.20/239.36 beat the "Snake's" 6.56/175. In round two, he continued to impress, where his 6.31/215 easily defeated Fuzz Miller's 6.61/192. A 6.34/232.55 fell to eventual winner Craig Epperly's 6.29/210 in the semifinal. His best NHRA national event ET was a 6.127 at Englishtown. The Gainesville speed was his fastest number. Where did John run 6.01?

Notes: Frank ran his best ever (to this point) of 6.01/234.37 to qualify #5 at the NHRA Summernationals. He beat Al Segrini in the first round, with a 6.17/229.59, but unfortunately, he broke in the second round giving Kenny Bernstein a free ride into the semifinal. He faced Mike Dunn in the "Hawaiian" in a best two out of three match race at Edgewater. Frank won two straight with times of 6.06 and a track record 6.04 at 236. Late in July he was at US 131 in Martin, Michigan, for a four-car race. All cars ran two races with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In Hawley's first race, his 6.13/220.58 lost to Dunn's 6.12/238. Another 6.13/222.77 beat Al Bergler in his second race. The final was between the "Hawaiian" and the "Chi-Town Hustler." Unfortunately, Dunn broke and Frank ran 6.15/216.34 for the victory. The team was at Englishtown in August for the Race of Champions event. Frank set Low ET at 6.11, but he failed to reach the finals. Back at US 131 for the PHR Championships on August 16, Hawley qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.17. He fell off to 6.39/217.39 in the first round, and lost to the race's eventual winner Bernstein at 6.35/225. The team set Low ET at 6.09 and went on to win the World Series of Drag Racing event at Cordova. A final round 6.16/234.37 beat Bob Pickett's 6.22/212.

Notes: Tom set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.880/238.09. He had been driving the other Funny Car drivers nuts during qualifying. Anderson had run a 6.17/206.89 on Thursday, which was only second to Gary Burgin's 6.09/238. Then he came out Friday morning and ran his great 5.88/238. No one else was able to break into the "fives' until Frank Hawley finally ripped off a 5.97/241 late in qualifying. That was the only other car to run a "five" during Pomona's qualifying. He made it into the final by beating Tripp Shumake's 6.15/245 in the first round, with a 5.96/242.58. In the second round, a 6.11/242.58 beat John Force, and in the semifinals, he ran 5.97/236.84 to beat Gary Burgin's 6.18/234. Tom came up against the "Chi-Town Hustler" with Hawley behind the wheel in the final. Anderson ran a 6.02/241.28 that lost to Hawley's 5.93/249. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Anderson had a bad fire during qualifying. The team stripped the car down to the bare chassis and made repairs. He then went out and ran 6.01/240.69 to qualify #14. In round one, he ran a 6.04/239.36 to beat Don Prudhomme's 6.19/209. Burgin had problems and shut off in the second round, and Tom advanced with a 6.00/235.60. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the semifinals and lost to Dale Pulde's tire-smoking 7.95. Atlanta held an eight-car show later in March, and Tom was there. He qualified #3 with a 6.37/177.16 and picked up to a 6.14/226.70 in the first round over Shirl Greer. He lost in the semifinals. A month later (April 17), he was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, it was an eight-car field, and this time he qualified #5 with a 5.94/239.99. He lost to low qualifier John Lombardo in the first round, where he fouled and shut down to 8.95. Things didn't go very well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A best of only 6.39/170.13 failed to qualify for the eight-car show. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Tom qualified #11 with a 6.07/206.89. An opening round 5.97/240.64 stopped Hawley's 6.03/235, but in round two, he slowed to a 6.29/243.24 that lost to Burgin's 6.26/233. Anderson followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 6.04/239.36 qualified #5. The problem is that qualifying fifth in an eight-car show means you had to run the low qualifier in the first round. Prudhomme qualified #1, and the "Snake" defeated him in the opening round. Considering the budget, these guys had compared to everyone else. This team was more than impressive. The NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown was a perfect example. With all the "high-dollar" sponsored cars around them, Tom's 5.91/244.56 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and slowed to a 6.19 in the first round that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.85/249, but the team was able to qualify and run so well against much more heavily funded teams was noticed by all. Anderson went to Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals at the end of July. It was an eight-car field; his 6.14/230.76 qualified #6. He cut a great light in the first round that saw his 6.11/238.72 hold off Ken Veney's quicker 6.08/221. In the semifinal, a 6.16/220.58 beat John Force's 6.40/193. He went up against Hawley in the final. Frank was the only Funny Car here that had run in the "fives." Anderson hoped for the best, but his 6.34/177.51 lost to the "Hustler's" Low ET and Top Speed setting 5.91/244 in the final. Hawley continued to upstage the team at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Tom's 5.91/237.46 qualified second to Frank's 5.86/247. In round one, Paul Smith broke, so Tom made an easy solo. But in round two, his troubled,8.19 lost to Mike Dunn's 6.25 in the "Hawaiian." Tom's best times of the year happened at Indy at 5.829/249.30, and a runner-up to Kenny Bernstein. Notes: This was one of the original four Mercury Comets built by the Logghe Brothers. Nicholson, Chrisman, and Kenz & Leslie got the other three. Injected 427 SOHC, C-6 automatic combo. When the season started, these Comets were still the cars to beat in the new Funny Car class. They were still the cars to go after into July, but their performance advantage had dwindled. There were a lot of up-and-coming blown cars that were ready to pounce. Tires were still holding back their performance, but that would soon change. Ed started the year at Fremont on January 7 for a best of three match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman and his Nova. He won the match three straight with runs of 8.35/176.81, 8.37/176.81, and an 8.14. Jim's best was 8.61. Ed was runner-up to teammate Don Nicholson at the AHRA Winternationals. In qualifying, an 8.98/158.17 got him the #4 spot in the eight-car field. He beat Arnie Beswick in the first round with an 8.55; in the semifinals, his 8.65/164.83 beat Roger Wolford's 8.90. But in the final, despite running his best time of the event at 8.48/169.49, he lost to "Dyno's" Low ET of the meet run of 8.26 at 171. The following week (February 5), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran in the S/XS class and set Low ET for the class in the first round, with an 8.33 at 173.41 to beat Bobby Wood. Unfortunately, the car broke on the run, and he could not make the second round. Shortly after that (February 18), he was in Las Vegas for the Stardust National Open. He won there, stopping Pete Gates's similar Comet in the final with an 8.22/171. The next day (February 19), he won the Irwindale Factory Showdown beating Fred Goeske's "Hemi-Cuda" in the final. Ed had set Low ET of the meet in qualifying with an 8.21. He then beat Charlie Allen in the first round before running an 8.26/174.08 in the semifinal over Jim Liberman's 8.73/169 in his Nova. Goeske got out of shape in the final and shut down, while Schartman ran 8.71/170.77 for the win. On March 5, he faced Hubert Platt's SOHC-powered Mustang for a best-of-three match at Lakeland. Platt won the first race with a 9.59/159 over Eddie's off-pace 9.72/151.77, but the Comet came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 8.61/168.85. He went up against the strongest Mopar Funny Car at the time, the "Ramchargers" Dart driven by Jim Thornton at Detroit Dragway early in April. This was the first time out for the team's new car. Not even sure how it was possible, but in the first race, Jim's 9.02/159 beat Eddie's 8.61/164.53. That's quite a long nap on the starting line. But Ed then ran another 8.61/164 in the second race to beat the Dodge's 9.28/152, and a final 7.93/166.05 got him the match race victory over Thornton's 9.17/158. The following week (April 9), he went up against Beswick at Indianapolis. Arnie broke both his Pontiacs in trying to beat the "Air Lift Rattler." Ed won all three races easily with times of 8.42/173.70, 8.64/171.52, and 8.37/174.15. On April 16, he ran Dick Jesse at LaPlace. The two only got to have one race as the GTO blew a torque convertor. But in their race, Eddie reset the track record with his 8.32/167.59. That record would not stand long as he came out to make a solo for the match race win and reset it to 8.30/174.41. He had a rematch against Liberman at York near the end of the month. In their first race, the Comet broke a rear end on the line, and Jim won with an 8.63/163. The next race saw the Nova lose a transmission while Schartman ran a track record 8.17 at 167.28. The final race had both cars make it down the length of the track together. Liberman's blower-popping 8.54/163 just nipped Ed's 8.54/151.51. In May, Jesse had a rematch against Schartman with his "Mr. Unswitchable" GTO. They raced at Sunset Dragway's 1/8 mile track. This match didn't go any better for the Pontiac driver as he lost all three races to the Comet. Going into the race, Ed had held the track record at 5.74. He ran 5.49, 5.51, and 5.54 in winning the match. Schartman found himself at Capitol Raceway on May 13 for the NASCAR Grand Opener. He made his way to the final by running 8.46/173.74 while beating Malcolm Durham. He faced Thornton in the final, and the car refused to fire. It would have been a good race between the two as Jim soloed for the victory with an 8.46/167. The following day, he was at West Salem for a match race against Bill Smith, who was driving the "Ottie's Auto" Gas Dragster. Eddie fouled in their first race and was late in the second, where his 8.03/163.93 lost to the dragster's 8.04/192. He faced another tough Dodge campaigner at York's US 30 on May 20 for a best-of-three match. The "Mr. Norm" Charger was a strong contender everywhere it raced. Gary Dyer drove the car, and in their first race, both ran 8.20, with Eddie crossing the stripe first. The speeds were 169.81 for the Comet and 171 for the Dodge. Eddie's 8.28/167.59 won the match in their second race when Gary lost an engine. He then went to Detroit Dragway for the AHRA Grandnationals. He won his first-round race over Hans Anderson easily, but in the second round, he lost to Doug Cook, driving the "Stone, Woods & Cook" Chrysler-powered Mustang. At Bristol in June, for the NHRA Springnationals, Ed's 8.25 qualified second behind teammate Nicholson's 8.23. An 8.43 in the opening round beat Clare Sanders in the "Limefire" Barracuda. Chrisman had won his first-round race but broke and could not continue, so Ed got to solo in round two. In the third race, he and eventual winner Tommy Grove had a great race, with Grove winning at 8.29/169 over Ed's 8.34/167.91. The following week (June 17), he won over a big field at York US 30. In round one, his 8.23/162.16 beat Durham's 9.20/137. Bruce Larson failed to fire against him in round two, so he advanced. Another 8.23 at 162.74 in the semifinal defeated Larry Reyes. This put him into the final against Liberman. Ed got the victory with a speed of 166.66. Atco Dragway hosted the Drag New Invitationals near the end of the month. It was an eight-car show, and during practice, Ed reset the track record with an 8.05. In the opening round, he ran 8.28/168.85 to beat Liberman's 8.39/162. An 8.48/162.74 took out Steve Bovan's 9.48/161 in the semifinal. He faced "Dyno Don" in the final, and the veteran reset the track record with his 8.03/172 getting the win over Schartman's 8.27/166 runner-up effort. On July 1, Ed went to Muncie for a match race against Kelly Chadwick. Ed's 8.55/163.93 beat Chadwick's 8.97/157, and in the second race, his 8.61/164.53 won the match when the Camaro blew its engine. He had a rematch at Cordova against Beswick on the 1,000-foot track. A quicker leaving 7.19 in their first race beat the Pontiac's 7.17. Beswick got out of shape in the second race and shut off. Even though Schartman had already won the match, the two returned for one more run. Ed ran his best time of the day, a 7.12 to win. Cecil County had four FCs run on July 22, and Ed was there. Roger Lindamood gated him at the start in his first race, and his 8.19/172 held on to win over the Comet's 8.09/170.13. Ed's ET was Low ET for the event. In the second race, the car's wheelstanding 8.28/168.22 lost to Thornton's 8.12/174. Ed could not run another round as he had bent the front axle in his landing. July ended with Eddie beating John Dallafior three straight at Quaker City, Ohio. The times there were pretty impressive as he ran 8.08/171, 7.99/178, and a solo 8.15/169. | Set both ends of the S/XS national record at 8.61 and 172.72 mph at Tulsa World Finals and bettered that by better than three-tenths at Indy. - Danny White | The 1966 NHRA Nationals at Indy were the first to feature dedicated classes for funny cars: S/XS, A/XS, B/XS. Supercharged experimental Stock was where the blown cars and class-dominating (but normally aspirated) Logghe Comets went to play. Schartman and his yellow RSE Merc clinched the S/XS trophy with an 8.28/174.41 blast. Since the NHRA had not yet established a formal Funny Car Eliminator, the class runs for S/XS were the closest thing the fans would get. - RT | Listed in FUELFC due to its lightweight, flip-top configuration despite being injected.

Notes: Audio express, lost sponsorship. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Collins only ran two NHRA national events in '86, including the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #3 with a 5.67/252.10. In the first round, he beat a tire smoking Tom Hoover with a 5.80/210.77. In round two, he ran an off pace 6.10/167.28 that lost to eventual winner Tim Grose's 5.68. The other race was the NHRA World Finals, also at Pomona. There, his best of 5.90/248.61 failed to qualify (fifth alternate).

Notes: Summernationals Champ one year, runner-up the other. Confirm photo is from 1974 or 1975 (note says 1974 at York). | Liberman started his '75 season at Fremont's New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. He didn't get very far as in the first round, his ailing 8.17 lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.48. Jim qualified #1 with a 6.30 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. He made it into the second round before smoking his tires and losing to Jim Dunn. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified fifth, but lost early. A 6.33 at Pomona qualified him seventh for the NHRA Winternationals and he beat Leroy Chadderton in the first round, before smoking his tires on a 7.11/166 loss to Mike Miller's 6.50/217. Qualified at 6.306/227.27 at Ontario Finals. Was that in the Vega or the Monza?

Notes: Pat drove the car at the Fallnationals and the World Finals. He ran 6.274/234.98 at Seattle to qualify #6 (setting Top Speed). In round one, he beat Tripp Shumake, 6.72 to 7.16 (speeds unavailable). In round two, Mike Miller broke on the line, sending Pat forward, but he fouled against Ed McCulloch in the semis, tossing out a 7.63/79 as the Ace motored to a 12-second win. Pat ran 6.244/230.17 for the #4 slot at the World Finals. He beat a broken Raymond Beadle in round one, with a shutoff 8.31/100. In round two, he beat Rick Johnson, 6.396/224.42 to 6.44/228. He had a heartbreaking loss in the semis. McCulloch broke on the line, but Pat crossed the centerline in taking his single and was disqualified. That reinstated McCulloch, who broke again in the final, giving Don Prudhomme the win. We need to confirm the 6.21.

Notes: Tripp qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.427/268.09. In the first round, he had a blower explode. The car caught fire, and Shumake fought for control, crossing the centerline before bringing it back into his own lane and hitting the guardrail. He got the car stopped, and he was OK. By the time the IHRA Winternationals rolled around in March, the car was fixed. Tripp qualified for the eight-car show and ran 5.56/258.62 in the first round, to beat a tire-smoking Brad Tuttle. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.44/269.46 when Ed McCulloch broke on the line. In the final, he faced low qualifier, John Force. John fouled, and Tripp took the victory by idling to an 11.10 for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.501/264.62 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to R.C. Sherman, 5.83/250 to 6.024/237.65. That was Tripp's last NHRA national event this year. A week later (March 27), he was at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals. A first-round 5.69 lost to Force's 5.64. Photo from Milan, MI, 1988, with Pulde driving. Did Tripp run 5.405 in this car? Formerly listed that time but removed it until we get confirmation.

Notes: Ronda had an amazing late 1969 season. He won the 1969 Manufacturer's Meet, the Irwindale East-West Championships, and the Sears Point North-South event. Performance info from Drag Stat 1969. | Ronda debuted his new Mustang on April 26 at Irwindale for a 16-car show. He ran a 7.98 in qualifying and a first-round 8.12/187.50 beat Leroy Hales. In the second round, he lost to Clyde Morgan, but it was a good first showing for the new car. On May 3, he went to OCIR for their second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open. He qualified fourth with an 8.06/177.51 in the four-car Ford team and, in the first round, beat Dale Armstrong with an 8.29/176.12. An 8.20/181.08 lost to Gordon Mineo's 7.99/185 in his second race. Back at Irwindale for an eight-car show on May 17, he lost in the first round, to low qualifier (7.67) Dave Beebe, who ran Low ET and Top Speed of the meet against him in round one. A 7.62/200.00 beat Ronda's 8.21/185.18. In May, he did much better at Fremont, stopping Danny Ongais in the final and setting Top Speed of the meet at 192.30. On May 30 at Irwindale for an eight-car show, he got one back from Dave Beebe by running a first-round 7.81/185.18 over the Dodge Fever car. He lost to Ron Leslie in the Kenz and Leslie Cougar in the semis. At the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, he qualified #11 with an 8.13/189.07, but Tom McEwen's 7.63/185 dropped Ronda's ailing Mustang. He ran a best-of-three match race at Corpus Christi against Larry Christopherson's Nova. (Not sure who was driving Larry's car at the time, but it was probably Dean LaPole.) Ronda won the first race with an 8.60/144 over the out-of-shape Nova. He also won the second race and the match when the Nova's driver fouled in the second race. The third race saw the Nova win with an 8.10 over Ronda's 7.99/179. At Irwindale's Fourth of July Race, he qualified #5 with a 7.98 but lost early. The next day (July 5), he went to OCIR for their Nitro Championships, a 16-car field. Ronda qualified #7 with a 7.93 and a first-round 8.07/186.33 beat Leroy Hales in the New Breed at 8.58/184. Ongais' 7.49/191 beat his 7.84/195.22 in the second round. On July 19 at OCIR for the PDA Meet, Ronda's 7.82 qualified #5 in the 16-car field, and he beat Ed Lenarth (8.15) in the first round, with a 7.92. Beebe unloaded a 7.38 Low ET of the meet on Gas, who shut off to an 8.93 in round two. Ronda really opened some eyes on July 26 at Irwindale's Funny Car Open race. It was a sixteen-car show, and he ran a first-round 7.50/197.80 (Top Speed of the meet) over Mineo's 8.46/186. Another 197.80 in round two coupled up with a 7.49 beat Marv Eldridge's Javelin in round two. In the semifinal, a 7.76/193.12 beat the usually unbeatable Ongais, who had handling problems and shut off. In the final, a 7.78/191.88 beat Mike Snively for the title. Before this race, the car had run well, but not as well as one would expect with its Ed Pink-built motor. All Ronda had done before this race was to replace a shock and the Mustang came to life. The rest of the year, the car was a contender. He was runner-up at an eight-car show on August 10 at Woodburn's Funny Car Festival. He advanced past the first-round when Kenney Goodell's 'Cuda lost a rear end. In the semifinal, his 8.06 (Low ET of the meet) beat Ken Martin's Corvette. Steve Bovan beat Ronda in the final. On August 16 at Irwindale for a 16-car show, one week later, he set Low ET in the first round, with a 7.54/194.38 over Warren Gunter’s VW. He advanced to the semifinal with a 7.61/195.64 when Johnny Wright fouled in the Hellfire Corvette. He shut down on the line in the semis with problems, letting Gary Gabelich single into the final. On September 3, he and Charlie Allen staged a match race at Irwindale. Allen lost a transmission in his first race against Ronda in the best-of-three match but still won when the Mustang broke. In the second round, Charlie ran an 8.19/161 to win when a transmission let go in Ronda's car, giving the match to Allen in two straight wins. He won a race at Irwindale on September 21 over an eight-car field by qualifying #1 with a 7.70 and winning his first-round race over Ed Lenarth with a 7.72/193.54. In the semis, a 7.59/193.12 (Low ET of the meet) beat Frank Pisano, and a final round 7.60/191.88 beat Bovan's, Mister T Camaro. At OCIR on October 11 for the Funny Car Open event, Ronda's 7.65/195.65 qualified #3, but he hurt his engine and chose not to race. On October 18, it was back to Irwindale for the East/West Championships. All 16-cars ran the first-round, with the winners running for the title in bracket one, while the cars that lost in the first race were grouped into bracket two. Ronda lost his first race to Terry Hedrick's holeshot 7.56/192 that beat his quicker 7.52/197.10. Now racing in bracket two, he ran a second-round 7.40/200.88 over Don Schumacher (7.83/183), and in the semis, he singled when Wright's Corvette broke. In the bracket two final, his 7.44/202.24 beat Gene Snow's quicker 7.38/214. The following day (October 19), he went to Fremont for their Fallnationals, but he lost a motor in the final round against Rich Siroonian. Then came the win on November 2 at Sears Point's North/South Championships, where he beat Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian in the final. Gas didn't look very strong in qualifying on November 7 at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet when a 10.34 was the best he could do. And the next day didn't look any brighter when an 8.64 lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.49/197 in his first race. In his second race, a 10.58 advanced when Norm Weekly fouled away a 7.96/181. But the car came to life in the third round, setting Low ET at 7.26/200 over Pete Bagnard. In the final, his 7.47/199.56 beat Pat Minick's 7.48/202.70 in the Chi-Town Hustler. This was Ronda's biggest win of '69. He showed up at Irwindale on November 23 for a 32-car show but had driveline problems and lost in the first round. All in all, it was a great year for Gas. - RH Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/69

Notes: On October 11, OCIR held a Funny Car Open, and after driving Tom Sturm's Corvair for most of the year, Bob showed up behind the wheel of this car. A blown trans in the first round gave Frank Pisano a single. The following weekend (October 18) was much better. At Lions for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade event, Bob ran a first-round 7.41/183.67 over Fred Goeske's 7.84 and a second-round 7.28/196.07 (Top Speed of Meet) over Ken Safford's 7.95 in the Stone, Woods & Cook Mustang. In the final, he set Low ET at 7.26/193.13 but fouled it away, with Kelly Chadwick taking the win with an 8.06/138.46. At the Lions East/West meet on October 25, Bob ran a first-round 7.29/200.44 but still lost to Pat Minick's 7.24/199.55. - RH

Notes: Early in '69, until the Danny Ongais-Mickey Thompson combo jelled, there were calling Rich Siroonian the killer of the funny cars. Like most other Funny Car drivers, he started the year at the Irwindale New Year's Day meet, where he qualified second with a 7.62 behind Don Schumacher's 7.50. He got crossed-up in the first round and shut down to 11.85, losing Norm Weekly's 8.10/192. Another first-round loss came at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 before losing to Dave Beebe in the "Super Chief" in the first round. At Pomona on February 2 for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 with an 8.22/185.11 and a first-round 8.45 beat Ed Schartman's quicker 8.39. In the second round, an 8.10 beat Schumacher's 8.12. But in the semifinal, both he and Ray Alley ran 8.27 (Siroonian at 184.42), with Alley winning. He won the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9 after qualifying second with a 7.47/196.50 (Top Speed)behind Charlie Allen's 7.46/191. He got some "revenge" over Alley in the opening round, where his 7.55/193.12 topped Alley. He then improved to 7.44/19.80 in the semifinal to beat Dale Armstrong, driving Gary Crane's ailing Javelin. In the final, he met and defeated Schumacher's 7.62/192 with a 7.39/195.22. Another win came at an eight-car show at Lions on February 22. After qualifying second with a 7.72 behind Randy Walls' 7.70, Rich then beat Leroy Hales in the first round before running 7.71/188.28 in the semifinal over Jim Liberman's 7.82/185, and in the final, a 7.70/189.07 beat Alley. He seemed to have a habit of qualifying second, and at Bakersfield on March 2, his 7.73 qualified behind Danny Ongais' 7.63 in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. His opening round 8.50/181.45 beat alternate Hale's 9.06/165, and a semifinal 8.23/189.07 advanced when Dick Loehr broke. He met Ongais in the final. Danny ran a 7.56/193 Low ET of the meet to stop Rich's 7.74/192.71. At Riverside on March 16 for the HRM Championships, a 7.73 qualified Rich #5, and he beat Rusty Delling in the first round, with a speed of 191.89. He broke and could not make the second round. On March 29, for the final OCIR All-Pro event, he ran a first-round 7.62/193.80 over Gordon Mineo, but Charlie Allen's 7.62/191 stopped his 7.68/192.70 in the semis. Irwindale held an eight-car show on April 13, and a 7.58/191.88 (Top Speed) qualified the 'Cuda #2 behind Ongais' 7.48. In the first round, Mike Van Sant fouled against him, and Rich still ran a 7.64/190.66. In the semifinal, against Steve Bovan, it was his turn to foul. On May 3 at the OCIR Manufacturer's Funny Car Open, he qualified #1 for the Mopar team with a 7.68/190.26 (third overall). Ongais' 7.55/192 beat his 7.61/194.80 in the first race, and not only did he foul in his second race against Jim Ward's Javelin, but he blew his trans as well. In his third race, an 8.71/168.53 beat Mike Van Sant. For the title, it was Ongais against Siroonian, but the 'Cuda broke another transmission, and Danny's 7.88/188 won. On May 10, Lions held an eight-car show, and Rich's 7.70 (Low ET) qualified #1. He singled with a 7.71/189.43 in the first round when Bob Hightower shut down in Doug Thorley's Javelin. He shut down with no oil pressure against Gordon Mineo in the semifinal. Another win came his way on May 17 over an eight-car field at Irwindale. A first-round 7.74/192.30 beat Walls' 7.81/180, and a semifinal 7.70/195.22 beat Johnny Wright's ailing "Hellfire "Corvette. In the final, Rich's 7.79/190.26 beat low qualifier Beebe's quicker 7.77/196. Shortly after this, the team revamped the car with a Keith Black 426 installed farther back in the chassis, replacing the 392.

Notes: Tom debuted a new Daytona at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He had lots of problems and ended up losing two blowers, one in qualifying, and one in a first-round loss against Del Worsham. He qualified #11 with a 5.39/269.92. He went to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where he ran 5.43/272.72 to qualify #10. He lost to Chuck Etchells in the first round. At the seventh NHRA race of the '92 season, he was in Ohio for the Springnationals where a 5.40/256.04 qualified #7. He picked up to a 5.33 at 255.97 to beat Jerry Caminito's 5.59/252 in the first round, but in the second round, he lost to Cruz Pedregon. He made the trip up north for the NHRA Grandnationals at the end of June. He qualified #7 with a 5.44/267.45 and a first-round 5.55/249.03 beat a tire smoking Gary Densham. Once again, he lost to Pedregon in the second round. Tom's 5.46/256.04 finished second best to Cruz's 5.39/274. This started to become routine when at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, he qualified #8 with a 5.33/264.62 and in round one, beat Whit Bazemore's 5.56/263 with a 5.36/258.32. But once again in round two for the third straight race he came up against Pedregon. This time Hoover lost oil pressure on the line and shut off giving Cruz a solo into the semifinals. At Denver in the middle of July for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Tom again made it into the second round. He qualified #6 with a 5.44/257.28 and then improved to a 5.37/265.56 in the first round, while beating Norm Wilding. But in the second round, his 5.57/229.06 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.41/262.

Notes: Bazemore started the '95 season at the Bakersfield Warm-up held at the end of January. He only made two passes, a 330-footer and a half-track 5.55/185.52. The following week (February 5), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.27/257.80 qualified #10, and in the first round, his 5.41/258.39 lost to Gary Clapshaw's 5.23/274. Shortly after that, he was at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. Whit qualified #9 at 5.30/282.48. Once again, he lost in round one, this time to Tony Pedregon. At the NHRA Supernationals held at Houston, he ran really well. His 5.20/287.90 qualified #9. He ran a career-best(to this point)5.11/294.11 in the opening round over K.C. Spurlock's 5.15/294. In the second round, an air line fitting that managed the fuel and clutch broke, and he slowed to 8.88/93.95 in a loss to Mark Oswald's 5.23/249. He didn't run as quick at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but he made it into the semi-final before losing to eventual winner John Force. Bazemore had "only" qualified #13 with a 5.33/296.73 but his 5.55/203.38 in the first round beat Oswald. In the second round, he beat Tom Hoover with a 5.36/269.86. Not sure if the Daytona was still in use at Gainesville, as the Daytona had been run at every event leading up to it. The Avenger was being used in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.36/264.16 qualified #12, and he improved to 5.26/291.54 to beat a fouling Kenji Okazaki. In round two, his 5.36/272.23 fell to Clapshaw's 5.20/269. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Mid-South Nationals, held at Memphis Motorsports Park in the first week of May. Bazemore was running really well in qualifying as he ran 5.18 twice. His best speed of the two passes was 292.39. Unfortunately, the car got out of shape against Jim Epler in the first round, and his 7.02/214.59 lost to Jim's 6.34/150. Whit's best times in NHRA national event competition this year were 5.102/301.30 at Ennis Fall. The car ended the year with Mobil 1 livery.

Notes: Darrell started the 1966 season in an injected fuel Fairlane. Then built this Mustang, first running it on injection with fuel, then blown alky, finally blown fuel. These times are blown fuel. In June, this car debuted at the NHRA Springnationals; it ran as a CC/FD. At the US Nationals in '66, Darrell ran 8.88/161 and an 8.77. On only the car's second outing, Droke ran a best of three match against Bob Sullivan at Detroit on April 17. He won the match running a best speed of 137. Darrell ran another best two out of three against Bobby Wood at Biloxi on May 14. The blown Mustang won the first race with a 9.30/140.34, but Droke fouled in the second race. In the final race for the match race win, Darrell's 8.99/149.50 beat Wood's Chevelle. He ran Arnie Beswick in a best of three at Cordova on June 25. Unfortunately, he lost two straight. In the first race, his 9.00/151.51 lost to Arnie's 8.90/160 while he fouled in the second race, and to add insult to injury, he also lost a blower belt. On August 7, Droke was at Bluegrass for a best of three match race against Walt Stevens, driving the "Piranha." Only one race between the two was run as Walt fouled, and Droke's 9.02/153.06 won, but a rod let go and damaged the engine. 8.65 at Wichita 66 (6/17/66 Drag News) | 161.29 MPH at Wichita 66 (6/17/66 Drag News). Blown fuel-113" AWB, glass body, 427 Cammer, C-6 trans combo in a rectangular-tube frame by Holman & Moody.

Notes: Won 1980 Cajuns over Paul Smith. | Meyer qualified #7 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.11/233.32, but failed to make the finals. Baton Rouge hosted the Division 4 Opener on March 9 and there finished runner-up to Raymond Beadle in a close 6.24/233 to 6.27/230.17 final. The following week (March 16) at Gainesville for the Gatornationals he qualified #6 with a 6.09, but crossed the centerline in the first round, and was disqualified. He was runner-up again in April at the Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins when he broke in the final after setting Low ET at 6.21. At the fifth annual Cajun Nationals, Billy qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.08. He beat Henry Harrison in the first round, with a 6.51/227 and in the semifinal a 6.32/226 beat Tripp Shumake. In the final he beat Paul Smith with a 6.66/215.31 for the victory. Meyer continued to run well, posting another victory on May 18 at Bristol in the IHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #5 and met low qualifier Beadle in the first round. A 6.13/239.36 (Top Speed), dispatched the "Blue Max's" smoky run. In the semifinals, a 6.44 beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.59. In the final, he met and beat Roy Harris' 6.53/226 with a 6.20/234.37. Things looked good for Billy heading into the NHRA Springnationals on June 8. A 6.18/226.70 qualified #5 and a first-round 6.09 beat Bob Pickett. In the second round, he got a single when Don Prudhomme was shut off with an oil leak on the line. Unfortunately, in the semifinal, Meyer's reverser locked up after his burnout, and he could only watch as Beadle singled into the final. He qualified #1 with a 6.23/238.09 (Top Speed) at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A first-round 6.35/225.56 beat Roy Harris's 6.66/198. In the semifinal, Beadle's 6.20/231 beat his 6.29/201.79. The Summernationals at Englishtown was the next national event on the NHRA schedule and Meyer qualified #4 with a 6.043. He made his way to the final to meet with Prudhomme. In the final an off pace 6.58/192.71 gave him a runner-up spot to Don's 6.10/238. A week later (July 20), he was back in the winner's circle at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern National. At first things didn't look so good when he only qualified #7 in the eight-car field. But he beat Paul Smith in the first round, and a surprisingly strong Len Imbrogno in the semifinals before meeting Dick Rosberg in the final. His final round 6.12/227.27 beat Rosberg's right there 6.12/230. He was back at Bristol on August 3 for the IHRA Summernationals and hoping for a sweep at Bristol after winning the Springnationals earlier in the year. Billy qualified #1 with a 6.20 (Low ET) at 221.67. He beat Al Baldwin in the first round, with a 6.26/224.43 and a 6.21/231.95 in the semis took out Roy Harris. In the final, a 6.65/227.27 was a tenth off of Paul Smith's winning 6.55/221 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." A week later, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He was the first alternate for the eight-car field with a 6.36/218.97, but when Tom Motry crashed in qualifying, Billy got in as an alternate. He showed what he could do by setting Low ET of the first-round with a 6.12 that beat Harris' 6.26, but in the semifinals, his reverser broke after his burnout, giving Gary Burgin a solo into the final. On August 17, Meyer got another runner-up finish at the Division 3 race at Beech Bend. A first-round 6.26/235.60 beat Ron Colson's quicker 6.17/236 in the "Hawaiian." In the semifinals, his 6.14/204.54 beat Beadle's 6.20/235 to move into the finals against Dale Armstrong. Meyer ran a strong 6.20/238.72 (Top Speed), but finished second best to Armstrong's 6.16/236. Meyer skipped running the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but he was at Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.044/236.84 and in round one, his 6.13/229.00 beat Armstrong's 6.39/220. In round two, a 6.18/234.37 got around Prudhomme's 6.27/226. In the semifinals, a tire shaking 6.46/188 lost to upstart Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's Arrow at 6.12/236. He continued to run well in IHRA competition as well, qualifying #1 with a 6.12/217.91 at Rockingham for the US Open. Dale Pulde did beat him in the first round, however and Meyer went on to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.21 qualified #6, and he lasted until the semifinal when Beadle beat him with a 6.01. The same song and dance happened at the season ending NHRA World Finals when Meyer was beaten again by Beadle in the semifinals, this time Raymond's 6.11 beat Meyer's off pace 6.88. In NHRA's season long points chase, Meyer finished second to Beadle. - RH

Notes: Phil, while filling in for regular driver Tom Prock, was the low qualifier at the 1972 NHRA Summernationals with a 6.508/222.77. He lost to Ron Potter (Golden Nugget Mustang) in the first round, after he lost the coin flip for lane choice and was forced to take the bad lane. Went 6.550/221.13 at Indy 9/72. Suffered complete body destruction after blower explosion on a winning 6.60/187.11 first-round pass at Indy 9/72. Came back and ran 6.88 to qualify #5 at the World Finals, but lost round one to Gordie Bonin.

Notes: Jim failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Elroy Airport for an eight-car show shortly after that. It was Elroy's first-ever race, and traction was rough, to say the least. Jim qualified #2 with a 7.00/211.76. A 7.12 in the first round, beat Jack Maroney, while his 7.10/217.38 (Top Speed) beat Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. He faced Craig Epperly in the final, and Dunn's vast experience from years of racing on poor tracks made the difference as he ran 7.01/216.86 to pick up the win over Epperly, who smoked the tires and lost. As mentioned, he qualified well at the Bakersfield March Meet. Unfortunately, he got crossed up against Bob Pickett in the first round, and shut off. He skipped the NHRA Gatornationals to run an eight-car show at OCIR being run the same day (March 15). Dunn qualified #1 with a 6.24/229.59 and went on to win, stopping Rodney Flournoy in the final. He had also set Low ET at 6.18. On April 5, he was at Green Valley for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. He qualified #1 with a 6.19/227.84, but he smoked the tires in round one, and lost to Shumake. OCIR hosted the next Western Regional, and Jim qualified #3 for the race with a 6.28/229.00. In the first round, Sherm Gunn had problems and shut off while Jim took it easy with a 7.03/196.50 to advance. He lost to the meet's eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the semifinals. Dunn's 6.32/214.79 was no match for the "Snake's" 6.17/238. At the end of June, he was at Sacramento for another Western Regional event. His 6.26/214.29 qualified second to Gordie Bonin's 6.24/236. These two would work their way into the final together. In the opening round, Jim's 6.28/218.96 defeated John Force's 6.87/181. In the semifinal, Hank Johnson's 6.48/221 lost to his 6.25/211.27. Both he and Bonin had been close in times during eliminations, with Bonin having a slight edge. It stayed that way as Bonin's 6.16/237 got the victory over Dunn's 6.19/213.38. Jim won the NHRA World Finals and was runner up to Raymond beadle at the US Nationals. Bakersfield at 6.286/224.43. Ran 6.050/238.72 at OCIR Finals. Jim won the 1981 OCIR World Finals over Gary Burgin.

Notes: In January, Gary debuted his new Mustang at OCIR for the Grand Premiere event. Unfortunately, in the car's first run in the competition, it smoked the tires to 7.94 in a first-round loss to eventual winner Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He was in Tucson later in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme, but in the first round, he was upset by eventual winner Ed Moore with his 6.53/223.32 losing to Ed's 6.37/225. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 6.10/237.46 to qualify #12. A 6.11/243.24 beat Prudhomme's 6.31/185 in the first round, but in round two, Segrini left first and hung on to record a 6.30/233 victory over Gary's 6.29/227.27. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.08/238.72. In the first round, he had problems and slowed to a 6.77/194.38 that lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.32/229. After that, Burgin stopped at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but he lost to John Pott in the first round. Atlanta held an eight-car show early in April. Gary was there, but he took a little nap in the first round, and his 6.04 lost to Frank Hawley's 6.10 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He was back in Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show; he ran 6.09/240.00 to qualify #7. In the first round, he smoked the tires against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" and shut off to a 10.56 while Beadle advanced with a 5.88. He was at Rockingham on May 2 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Once again, he lost in the first round. This time, Segrini took him out. Gary made it past the first round at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified last in the eight-car show with a 6.24/237.46. In the first round, he advanced with a 6.19/243 when Dale Pulde had problems on the line and shut off. He faced Beadle in the semifinals and fouled against him. The following week (June 6), St. Louis hosted the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Burgin went all the way, winning this one. He qualified #3 with a 6.17 and a 6.24/237.47 beat Ron Correnti in round one. In the semifinals, his 6.29/231.96 beat Tom Hovland, and in the final, a 6.34/230.77 beat Tom Hoover's 6.49/215. After his first big win of the year, it was strange to see his name among the non-qualifiers at the NHRA Springnationals. His best of 6.30/236.22 was good for the third alternate. He did make the field at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals on June 20. His 6.06 qualified on the "bump" spot of the eight-car show. Burgin lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to Tom Anderson. He was runner-up to Beadle on June 27 for Brainerd's US Funny Car Championships. Another win came at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.02/239.36 behind Prudhomme's track record 5.97. He beat John Force in round one with a 6.19/229.00. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 6.14/233.16 when Hovland broke. In the final, he faced Prudhomme and the "Snake" shut off with problems while Burgin won with a 5.99/234.98. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.00/244.56 qualified #7, and he ran well, lasting until the semifinals. Burgin won the US Funny Car Nationals at Maple Grove. He reset the track record to 5.93 and had Top Speed of the meet at 235.60. A final round 6.004/227.27 narrowly beat Segrini's 6.010/232.55. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Gary ran 5.91/244.56 to qualify #3. He beat Beadle in the first round with a 5.97/246.57, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Segrini. He then made the trip to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Gary's 5.88/248.61 qualified #6. He beat Mike Dunn driving the "Hawaiian" and Anderson in the first two rounds, and a semifinal 5.93/243 beat a tire-smoking Ken Veney in the semifinals. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and Meyer's semifinal win came with a 5.94, so it was expected to be close. Unfortunately, Burgin overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Billy ran 5.91 for the victory. After a great runner-up finish at Indy, it was surprising to see his name among the non-qualifiers at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. It was an eight-car field, but Gary was definitely having problems as the best he could run in qualifying was 6.12/234. It took a 6.04 to make the show. Things went better at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals, but not by much. He qualified #15 with a 6.10/235.60 and an opening-round 6.11/237.46, lost to Beadle's 6.05/238. He was back at OCIR for its Manufacturer's Meet in November. Burgin made a warm-up pass and ran 5.99 but lost to Dunn and Billy Meyer in his first two races. Photo from 1982 GVRC match race. | Burgin usually ran Jaime Sartes', later built his own cars in '80-'82. - Joe Moore | 6.005 253.15 in the first round, beat Mike Dunn in the semis and ran 6.061 falling to Don Prudhomme at AHRA US 30 1982 (Runner Up) (Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds)

Notes: In 1968, Fred ordered a new funny car to be built by Ron Scrima and Pat Foster at Exhibition Engineering. The'68 Barracuda was more traditional than the one it replaced. Still sponsored by the Plymouth Dealers Association of Southern California, Goeske called it the Hemi-Cuda II. The car debuted with a win at Lions Drag Strip, and Goeske was the hottest funny car in Southern California for the next couple of months. Fred ran a best of 7.78 at 191.88 with the car. A 426 late-hemi powered this car with a B&M Torqueflite. |In one of Fred's earliest races with the car, he faced Dick Harrell for a best of three match at OCIR. In their first race, the 'Cuda's 8.57/173.07 beat the Camaro's fouling,9.13/168. Hareel evened the score in the second race as he got out first, and his 8.17/173 held of Goeske's 8.20/178.92.Goeske then beat Harrell in the final race for the match race win.Fred faced off against Charlie Allen in a best two out of three match race at Irwindale on January 28. He won the first race with an 8.33/174.41 when Allen's Dart had the steering fail. Fred soloed with another 8.33 to win the second race and the match while Charlie repaired his Dart. Allen did manage to win the third race with an 8.82 ousting Goeske's out-of-shape run. He was at Lions on February 24 for the Funny Car Spectacular. Over 50 cars tried to qualify for the sixteen spots. Fred ran an 8.18 to qualify #6. He picked up to a 7.86/180 in the first round, over Rich Hammons, and in round two, a 7.95/174.41 beat Jack Chrisman's 8.11/176. He took it easy in the semifinal, needing only an 8.98/159.17 to win when Rusty Delling blew his motor in the "New Breed" Firebird. In the final, he faced off against Steve Bovan's Camaro. Unfortunately for Bovan, he lost a transmission, and Goeske motored to an 8.34/171.10 victory. The next day (February 25), he was at Carlsbad for the South Coast Funny Car Championships. An off pace 8.66/143.76 lost in the first round, to Lew Arrington's 8.00/184. On March 3, he was at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale. Thirty cars attempted to qualify, and Fred managed to qualify #15. He beat Dick Loehr in the first round, with an 8.03/182.18, but the "Hemi-Cuda" came to the line ailing in round two. An 8.73/159.01 lost to Jim Liberman's 8.18/171. He did win Funny Car eliminator at the Bakersfield March Meet, running a final round 8.28/181.44 over Norm Cowdrey. At the HRM Championships at Riverside on March 24, he won his first-round race over Ronnie Runyan with an 8.23, but in the semifinals of the eight-car show, a consistent 8.26 lost to Loehr's 8.07. Fred faced off against Gas Ronda at Irwindale in a best-of-three match race on March 30. He won two straight when Ronda fouled in the first race, and in the second race, the Mustang lost a transmission while Fred ran an 8.02/179.28 to sew up the match. Carlsbad held another Funny Car show on April 7, and Goeske took the win. In the first round, he beat Ronda with an 8.07/171, and a semifinal 8.07/153 beat the Wright Brothers. In the final, he set Low ET at 7.90 while beating Jack Chrisman's Comet. One week later (April 13), he was back in the winner's circle at OCIR over a big field. He advanced past the first round with a 7.89/161.57. In the second round, an 8.07/150 beat Hayden Proffitt. In the semifinal, he had a good race with Loehr's Mustang. His 7.93/179.65 beat Dick's 8.04/182. He ran a 7.91/177.51 for the win in the final, but he didn't need to as Cowdrey had broken on the line. Their roles were reversed on April 28 at Irwindale. It was an eight-car field, and Goeske and Cowdrey again met in the final. The "Hemi-'Cuda" started its march to the final by beating Runyan's 8.48/170 with an 8.27. Fred got a single in the semifinal when Gene Ciambella lost fire, and he advanced with a 7.97. In the final, Goeske set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.90/182.18, but it was accompanied by and red light giving Cowdrey the victory. On May 4, he raced at OCIR's Funny Car Team Championships. He didn't reach the finals, but he ran well. Another race at OCIR on May 18 featured Funny Cars vs. Fuel Altereds. All cars were to run three races. Fred won all three of his races, running 7.85/184.04 over Sush Matsubara, 8.07/180.72 over Randy Bradford, and finally 8.12/180.72 to beat Willie Borsch. He was at Irwindale for a best of three match against Allen on May 23. He won all three races over Charlie's ailing Dart. Times were 7.99/183.28 over Allen, who not only fouled but lost a transmission as well. In the second race, an 8.12/177.46 beat the Dart's ailing 8.64/120. And to sew in all up, a final 7.99/181.44 defeated Charlie's way off pace 8.81/114. He was at Detroit Dragway for the Midwest Funny Car Championships in June. This was a sixteen-car show, and in the opening round, Goeske's 7.85/177.86 beat Dave Pinta. A second-round 7.87/169.49 beat Pat Minick's 8.13/173 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Kelly Chadwick fouled against him in the semifinals advancing into the final against Roger Lindamood. Goeske scored the victory with a 7.84/181.44 over a troubled Lindamood at 9.80-98. He then won a Funny Car race at Union Grove on July 4, setting both ends of the track record with 7.58/189.86 times. Capitol Raceway held its Supercharged Invitational on July 13, and Fred was there. In the first round, he beat Dick Bourgeois with a 7.84/187.10, but he lost a transmission against eventual winner Larry Reyes in round two. He also competed at the Super Stock Nationals, where he was runner-up to Reyes on Friday with a 7.93/190.66, finishing second to the "Super'Cuda's" 7.70/187. Also, in July, he set both ends at Maple Grove with a 7.81/183.44. He had a bad weekend when he faced Arrington for a best of three match at Maple Grove on August 10. Fred Fred lost two straight, and Arrington took his mph record away with a 185.18 run in the second race. The''Cuda was ailing and could only run a best of 8.79. The next day (August 11), he was in Milan for another match race against Loehr's "Stampede." Once again, he lost two straight with times of 9.31/105.14 and 8.85/145.39. — Ron Howard

Notes: Guzman and Ward didn't venture out very far from home, but they were tough to beat when they did. On June 16, Art was at Omaha, Nebraska, where he ran 7.95/184.80 to beat a fouling Gene Kidder. In his next race, Ron Leslie fouled away a 7.83/191 while he picked up the win with a 7.81/186.32. The team ventured out to California in July. On the 3rd, Art drove the Corvair to a win over an eight-car field at Irwindale. He was running well, an 8.05/185.18 in the opening round beat Ray Alley, and in the semifinal, his 8.00/187.10 took out Charlie's 8.22/172. He was supposed to face Gas Ronda's Mustang in the final, but Ronda blew a torque convertor while winning his semifinal race. In the final, Gene Conway took his place, and Ward's 8.05/186.72 beat the Jeep's 8.41/181. They won the OCIR Nitro Championships on July 6 over a sixteen-car field. Art qualified #5 with an 8.06/183.28. A first-round 7.89/187.10 beat the "Funny Bunch." In round two, an 8.08/185.94 took out Wendell Shipman, and in the semifinal, an easy 8.32/185.94 advanced when Steve Bovan broke in Nelson Carter's Charger. He faced Dee Keaton's Cougar in the final and won with an 8.10/188.28, beating Keaton's 8.48/151. On October 5, they were at OCIR again. A first-round 8.12/187.50 beat Rich Siroonian's early shut-off run. In the second round, they lost a transmission and gave Dave Beebe a solo pass. As mentioned above, at the World Finals, he was the #1 qualifier in Super Eliminator, but he fouled in the first round. In 1968, this car was the No. 1 Qualifier in Super Eliminator (no Funny Car Eliminator in '68) at the NHRA World Finals in Tulsa. Ran 7.58 in S/XS, a tenth under the record. They also ran 7.79 at Omaha.
