Notes: Stan ran well at the IHRA Nationals at Dragway 42 in August. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.60/221.13. An improved 6.52/212.76 beat a tire-smoking Ron O'Donnell, and in round two, his 6.36/220.58 took out Kenny Safford's 6.58/214 in the "Mr. Norm" car. He lost in the semifinals when his 6.61/200.44 fell to Denny Savage's 6.42/222 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." After such a good showing, it was surprising to see Bowman DNQ a week later (August 24) at the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. His best of 6.63 failed to make the eight-car show. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #4 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.244/226.13 (behind only Beadle, Prudhomme, and McCulloch). Unfortunately, he lost to Bob Pickett with this huge wheelstand in the first round, 6.43/229 to 12.83/70.20. That was the team's only NHRA national event this year. |

Notes: Worsham qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.44/268.33. His 5.93/188.52 advanced when Wyatt Radke lost a blower in the first round. He ran 5.21/288.18 in round two, but it wasn't enough to beat eventual winner Al Hofmann's 5.13/294. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.46/222.55 best was the first alternate. Things went much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.14/287.44. In the opening round, his 5.19/289.66 defeated Tom Hoover's tire-smoking 6.04/163. In the second round, his 5.41/215.67 beat Richard Hartman's 5.54/221. Worsham's run ended in the semifinal, where Chuck Etchell's 5.07/305 beat his 5.32/229.12. He also qualified #7 at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals with a 5.16/280.89. In round one, Del's 5.22/278.03 dropped Cruz Pedregon. Tim Wilkerson had problems against him in round two and shut off to 10.08, while Worsham advanced at 7.35/121.47. He gave Hofmann a good race in the semifinal, but his 5.17286.35 fell to Al's 5.12/290. Still, back-to-back semifinal finishes were impressive. He also qualified for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. A 5.14/289.94 qualified #5. In the opening round, he beat Tony Pedregon's 5.26/285 with a 5.21/281.42. He lost to the eventual winner John Force's 5.21/287 with a 5.30/271.16 in yet another semifinal finish. Del's best times came in qualifying at the NHRA World Finals, where a 5.036/299.70 earned him the #6 qualifying slot. He lost to Tony Pedregon in round two. |

Notes: Fiberglass Trends body & paint. This car was run in 1969. The 1970 version was all red and didn't carry the Javelin 2 name. Ran a confirmed 7.77 at US 30. On March 2, Dick won over a sixteen-car field at Irwindale. He qualified with an 8.12/181.08 and an 8.10/182.18 beat Marv Eldridge in round one. In round two, he picked up to 7.91/184.04 to advance. In the semifinals, he dropped Steve Bovan with a 7.99/184.04. This put him into the final against Roger Wolford. The Javelin took the win. Dick raced Don Schumacher at Aquasco for a best two out of three match race on April 13. Dick fouled away an 8.17/182.18 in the first race but returned with a 7.99/181.44 to beat Don's 8.19/185 in the second race. In the tiebreaker, the Javelin broke, and Don singled to a 7.95/188 for the match race win. At the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Amarillo on April 27, Bourgeois' 8.36 beat Jess Tyree, who lost a transmission. Fred Goeske ran the track's first seven (7.91) in the second race, and Dick was in the other lane at the time and lost. At another Cavalcade race on June 15 at Epping, a holeshot 8.21/187 beat Tyree's quicker 8.08/176. In his second race, a 7.73/179 beat Goeske's 8.56/175. Unfortunately, he broke a rear end in his third race and lost to Ken Safford. National Trail held a Cavalcade race on August 17. Bourgeois' singled with an 8.17 in the first race when Kelly Chadwick broke a driveshaft. In the second race, a 7.75/189.46 beat an ailing, Stone-Woods-Cooke Mustang driven by Ken Safford at 8.93. In the third race, Gary Dyer's 7.83/194 beat his fouling 8.16/186.32. Dick ran a 7.47/196.93 to qualify ninth at the US Nationals on September 8. He improved to a 7.45 in the first round, but that was no match for Leonard Hughes' 7.28. On September 14, he raced a four-car round-robin race at National Trail. In his first race, Jim Liberman's holeshot 7.89/186 beat his quicker 7.85/189.86. He shut off on the line with no oil pressure for his second race and a 7.63/191.88 lost to Gary Dyer's 7.46/195 in the third race. He raced at the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Lions on October 18, but he had engine problems and lost fire in the first round. At the Fremont Fallnationals the next day (October 19), he qualified #1 with Low ET of the meet, a 7.48. A first-round 7.89/191.48 lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.68/193 in the first round. On November 1, he qualified #1 again at an eight-car show at Irwindale. A 7.53/193.54 gave him the top spot. In the first round, he set Low ET of the meet with a 7.49/191.48 over Frank Pisano's 7.89/179.28. He lucked out in the semifinal when his Javelin lost fire on the line against Ed Lenarth. Lenarth did his burnout, and his left rear wheel came out of the car, causing him to swerve and hit the guardrail. While all this was going on, Dick refired and ran a 7.98/172.92 to advance to the final. In the final, he met another Javelin, that of Rusty Delling. Dick went on to run a 7.97/192.30 for the victory over Delling's 8.09/185. He qualified fifth (7.65) for the Wacky Funny Car team at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet. |

Notes: Ruth started the year at Fremont on January 2 for the New Year's race. A 6.87 qualified #4. In the first round, a 6.90 beat Joe Winter's wheelstanding Mustang. In the semifinal, he ran a 6.91 only to lose to Twig Zeigler's 6.94. He ran at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline, but lost to Richard Tharp's 6.57 Low ET blast in the second round. On February 13, he ran at OCIR for the third All-Pro event. A 6.69 qualified #1 and an even better 6.67 beat Gary Burgin's 7.06 in the first round. In the semifinal, Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega stepped up to a 6.76 to beat Jerry's 6.86. He won the Las Vegas National Open in March, running Low ET in the final with a 6.97/205.94 beating Burgin's 7.11/207. He lost early at the Bakersfield March Meet when he fouled against Jim Dunn in the first round. In April, he won a race at Firebird Raceway and the Seattle season opener over Kenny Martin. Near the end of the month Ruth faced off against Leroy Chadderton driving the "Hawaiian" for a best of three match race at Deer Park. Jerry won all three of their races. Early in May, he competed at the OCIR Big Four Championships. He got a solo in the first round, and in round two his 6.85/211.26 beat Eddie Pauling's quicker 6.82/205 in the "Whinemaker", but he broke a rear axle and was unable to run in the third round (32 car field). Ruth was driving both his dragster and his Funny Car at Seattle's Northwest National Open and there he won TF, but his Funny Car didn't quite make it to the final. Ruth had beaten Kenny Achs in the opening round with a 6.85/215.30, but in the semifinals, both he and Kenny Goodell ran 6.77 (Ruth at 215.30 again), but Kenny got the win light. He drove the dragster more often than the FC, but at the NHRA Division 6 race at Mission B.C., he won Top Fuel with Low ET and Top Speed. The Mustang Funny Car also set Low ET and Top Speed, but lost in the semifinals. Only five FC's showed up at Portland's NHRA Division 6 race, and Ruth won rather easily. He soloed in the first round, with a 7.04 and then beat Twig Zeigler in the semifinal which turned out to be his only race as in the final Ray Hadford driving the "Green Elephant" popped a blower and Ruth got the victory. |

Notes: Billy ran 6.781/214.28 at the Tulsa PRA race and 6.74 at Bristol. He ran 6.51/218.97 at the '72 OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, Billy's first big win as an 18-year-old. He ran well at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 but was involved in some controversy. Billy qualified #6 at 6.58 and then took a 6.69 win over a broken Kelly Brown in the Wonderwagon Vega in round one. In round two, he beat Bill Leavitt, 6.81 to 6.87. Billy was late getting to the lanes for his semifinal matchup with Don Prudhomme, so the Lions management replaced him with the Low ET loser of round two, Omer Carruthers. This episode was captured in a Dave Deal cartoon during coverage of the meet in one of the mags of the day. |

Notes: Gene started his '78 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. The track was slick, and it only took a 7.54 to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Snow qualified #6. He ran his best number of the weekend, a 6.66 at 213, in the first round to beat Bill Chappelle, and in round two, a 6.73/216 got around Billy Graham's crossed up Monza. He beat Carl Swanson in the semifinals to go up against Don Prudhomme in the final. Gene smoked the tires to a 7.02/176.41 that finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.61/227. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.413/226.13 qualified #15. An opening round 6.42/217 beat Pat Foster's 6.44/223 in Joe Pisano's car, but an off-pace 7.71/133 lost to Prudhomme's 6.56/205 in round two. His next stop was at Green Valley Raceway for a ten-car show. His 6.53/227 advanced over a blower exploding Randy Lackey in the first round. But he lost to Graham in the semifinal. He was back at Green Valley for the second NHRA Division Four race. He set Low ET in qualifying with a 6.22/209.79. In the opening round, a 6.30/222.22 defeated Bob Pickett's 6.46/187. Tom Hoover smoked the tires against him in the semifinal, and Gene's 6.26/215.31 advanced. He faced Graham in the final, and Billy shut off with problems while Snow ran 6.23/218.97 for the victory. In May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 7.00/200.00 qualified #5. He went up against low qualifier Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in round one. Both smoked the tires, but Snow's 7.36/176.47 won over Beadle's 7.58/143. Snow's 6.88/202.70 beat Graham, who also smoked the tires in the semifinal. He faced Tripp Shumake in the final, and despite running a good (for the track conditions) 6.90/217, Gene finished runner-up to Shumake's 6.79/218. Early in June, he went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Snow's 6.80/195.66 qualified #5 for the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tom McEwen. Gene smoked the tires in their race and shut down to 10.86/77.79, while the "Goose" advanced with a 6.48/212. The following week (June 11), he qualified #9 at NHRA Columbus at 6.244/227.27 but lost to Prudhomme in round one, 6.12/239 to 6.200/213.77. His next stop was at Alamo Dragway near San Antonio on June 18 for the AHRA Nationals. Gene's 6.26 (Low ET) at 216 qualified #1. In the opening round, John Collins got crossed up against him, and Snow beat him with a 6.44/195. But in the semifinal, it was Gene who got out of shape, and his 7.76/114 lost to John White's 6.67/196. A pair of wins followed that. First, he won the fourth NHRA Division Four race held at Riverside. He made two solos to reach the final, one over a broken Chip Woodall and the other an "odd-lot" solo due to the short field. In the final, he ran Low ET and Top Speed with his 6.33/194.39 getting the victory over Larry Brown's 6.85/155. Gene then won the AHRA Show-Me Nationals at Kansas City, where he set Low ET as well at 6.27. He almost took another win at the AHRA Ozark Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.51/198.67 that followed McEwen's 6.44/189. Larry Gould's SOHC Ford-powered car caught fire on the line in the first round, and Snow singled with a 6.80/166. Collins got out of shape against him in the semifinal, and Snow advanced at 6.62/200. He faced Graham in the final, and the two had a good, close race that saw Billy's 6.54/205 score the win over Gene's 6.58/191. He qualified #11 at the E-town Summernationals at 6.190/233.11 but lost to McEwen in the first round, 6.22/233 to 6.40/217.39. In August, he was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. His 6.39/228.42 qualified #4.A 6.52/216 solo advanced in round one when Simon Menzies' brakes failed to hold him on the line. In the semifinal, he lost to eventual winner Beadle. Snow's 6.40/230.78 lost to the "Max's" 6.35/221. Gene was the second alternate at Indy at 6.250/231.95. He then sold the car to Roy Phelps in England. | In late '77, SS&Dl did a photo feature, and next to the left airbrushed headlight was "Rambunctious" in small cursive. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Al Segrini debuted Phil Castronovo's new Arrow on June 21 at Englishtown during the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. Things didn't go so well as the car broke on its burnout preparing to race Gary Burgin. He was at Empire Dragway in July for the NED Gold Cup Championships race. It was an eight-car field and his opening round 6.91/174 lost to Roy Harris's 6.71/221. He was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where his 6.190/231.95 qualified #10. Segrini beat Billy Meyer in the first round, before losing to eventual winner Denny Savage in round two. | Also ran 6.21/227.84 at Englishtown on 7/16/78. The 6.19/231.95 were Al's best NHRA times of the 1978 season. |

Notes: Jim was at Englishtown on July 5 for its Funny Car Spectacular. The race featured ten FC's each running two races, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. In his opening race, Jim ran 6.19/214.28 to beat Tommy Ivo's 6.62/197. He had problems on his second run, and he shut down to 8.77/88.75, losing to Les Cassidy's 6.63. Denny Savage had set Low ET at 6.11, but his car broke and could not run in the final. Tom McEwen had second Low ET with a 6.17, but he also sat with a broken car. Ed McCulloch was next at 6.18, but wouldn't you know it: his car could not run the final. So that moved Adolph into the final to face Gary Burgin, who had made it with a 6.18. Jim tried hard in the final, but the car got loose, and he shut off while Burgin motored to 6.20 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Division Four final. Jim set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.42/205.01. Only six cars showed, and in the first round, his 6.67/198 beat Ezra Boggs' 7.03/208 in the "Moby Dick" Corvette. He then got an easy solo in the semifinals due to the short field. In the final, his car broke, and Tom Anderson soloed for the victory at 19.49. DNQ at Indy for the US Nationals at 6.313/220.04. Jim also failed to qualify at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals. |

Notes: After racing the Dodge Cordoba from late July or August 1976 to March or April 1977, Tommy reverted to a Dodge Dart body to finish the 1977 season. The Cordoba had turbulence problems due to its notchback rear window. Photo from Englishtown 1976. Tommy told young David Hapgood at the time that his 1977 best in this car was 6.19 at the time (and that he also had been credited with a bogus 5.94 at another track). 6.20 Ontario |

Notes: Car and ET info taken from the May 1971 issue of Drag Racing USA magazine. Ran 6.80 at Irwindale 1/01/71. Confirmed 6.77 at OCIR Manufacturer's Meet in 71, which was runner-up to Foster's 6.72, and were the two quickest runs of that event. - ND | Jim had one of his best season's in '71 driving his low budget 'Cuda. It started at Irwindale on January 1 for the New Year's Funny Car Festival. He qualified #1 with a 6.99/180.72. He ran a first-round 6.96 to beat Don Schumacher's tire smoking 8.20. He went on to win over Tom McEwen and set Low ET at 6.80. The next day he was at Fremont for the New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. A first-round 8.36/182.92 lost to Jim Liberman's 8.25/187.88. He took another win at the first OCIR All-Pro race. A first-round 7.08/186.33 beat Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's Cuda, and he advanced past the semifinals when Stan Shiroma fouled. In the final, he ran 6.96/203.61 for the victory over Gene Snow's off pace 7.41/152. Lions hosted the first AHRA Grand American on January 10 and Dunn ran 6.75 in qualifying among the "unseeded" cars. In the first round, he beat Tom Prock's tire smoking Vega with a 6.92/171.10. He picked up to a 6.74/191.89 in the second round while beating Richard Tharp's 6.84/215 in the "Blue Max." In the semifinals, Jim got out of shape and shut off, giving Shiroma an easy run into the final. Jim lost in the first round, to Prudhomme at the second OCIR All-Pro race on January 24. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals on February 7, he qualified #10 with a 7.22 at only 183. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, against Snow. At the third OCIR All-Pro event on February 13, he had an interesting day. In the opening round, Prudhomme’s 6.82/223 beat him when he shut off to 10.71/82.79. He got back in on the "break rule" when Shiroma broke a rear end. In the semifinals, Jim’s 7.14/194.38 lost to Rich Siroonian's engine blowing 6.87/221. Once again, he was placed, but into the field as Rich was unable to return for the final. Once again, he faced Prudhomme. He ran a sub-par 7.23/147.78 in the final that lost to the "Snake's" sizzling 6.62/226. He grabbed another win at the Bakersfield March Meet on March 8. He beat Fred Goeske, Shiroma, and Bob Pickett, in that order, to face Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" Maverick in the final. Jim took the victory with a 6.99/212.26 over Dave's 7.17/204. OCIR held an eight-car show in March and Jim beat Gary Burgin's Camaro in the first round, with a 7.03/187, but he broke and was unable to run in the semifinals so Burgin was reinstated. At OCIR's final All-Pro race on March 27, Dunn ran 7.34/164.23 over Mert Littlefield in round one, a second round 7.28/187.11 advanced when Mike Thermos fouled. In the semifinals, Condit left before the tree was activated so Jim took it easy with an 8.62/143.76 to meet with Snow in the final. But once again, the 'Cuda broke and Gene singled for the win. In April, he was runner-up to Gordon Mineo at Irwindale where he had earlier set Low ET at 7.18. On April 24, Lions held an eight-car show. Dunn qualified #2 with a 6.99. A first-round 7.08/158.45 beat Leroy Hales' 7.42/198 while a semifinal 6.92/194.80 beat Shiroma's 7.00/208. In the final, he ran 6.96 for the win over Bob McFarland's 7.65. He was at OCIR on May 1 for the Big Four Championships. He lasted until round two where his 7.25/187.89 lost to Siroonian's 6.75/219. Jim won the NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale. He qualified #1 with a 7.00/189.57 and on his way to the final, set Top Speed at 214.79. In the final, he beat Dave Beebe in the "Mr. Ed" Charger. He was back at Irwindale on May 31 for the Memorial Day Championships. Unfortunately, he fouled against low qualifier Sush Matsubara in the first round. Jim shut off to 7.54. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, Jim qualified #11 in the tough show, but he lost to Snow in the opening round. Dunn took a win the easy way on June 27 at Fremont for the NHRA's second Division 7 race. He qualified #1 with a 6.96 and in the first round, he ran a solo 7.20 to advance. In the semifinals, Tim Grose broke against him, and he soloed again. This put Jim into the final against Tom Ferraro, driving John Hoven's Mustang. Tom broke just off the line and Jim soloed again for the win with a 6.94/196.50 (Low ET). The following week (July 3), he was at OCIR for the Nitro Championships. Things didn't go so well as he lost to Norm Wilcox driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in the first round. He made up for his early loss by going to Irwindale the following day and winning the Independence Day Championships. It was an eight-car field and Jim started his march to victory by beating Nathan Valdez in the first round, with a 7.22/178.21. A semifinal 7.04/186.72 beat Beebe and in the final, his 7.08/197.36 scored the win over Matsubara's 7.23/205. Later that month, he was at Lions for a sixteen-car show. He lost in the semifinals, when his 6.91 fell to eventual winner Shiroma, who beat him with a 6.79. |

Notes: Seaton's first all-glass car. Round-tube Logghe chassis replaced "too flexy" square-tube frame of old A/XS Corvair. One-piece fliptop weighed in at 1880 pounds. Aluminum-headed 427, Turbo-hydro, 9" Ford rear, 3.51:1 gear, Detroit Locker. American Rodding 9/68 feature said that when the car nabs "World's Fastest Chevy" title, longtime "Shaker" decklid inscription "Chevy Will Rise Again" will be revised to "Has Risen." | Terry Hedrick replaced longtime Seaton driver Del Heinelt in mid-season. (Sadly, Heinelt died shortly afterward, shoeing Larry Coleman's blown Mustang when it went airborne at the '67 Nationals.) Listed times from nearly new car at Indy '67. Confirmed 8.23/180.72, 8.22/177.16, and 8.02/182.18 from 11/26/67 OCIR Manufacturers Meet. - RT | Terry was at Houston in October for a best of three match race against Nick Revon. Hedrick easily won the first two races with times of 8.83/173 and 8.90/163. Nick had motor problems and was unable to run the third race, so Terry soloed with an 8.24/181.08. Shortly after that, he was at Fremont for its third annual exhibition Car Championships. Hedrick was running well; he even stopped the strong Mustang of Tommy Grove in the semifinals with an 8.55/176.55. He faced the newly supercharged Comet of Ed Schartman in the final and lost to the Comet's 8.08. His next stop was at Irwindale for its experimental Stock Invitational race. Unfortunately, he lost there to Ronnie Runyan in the opening round. | Best NHRA national event times of 7.942/181.44 at Indy 67. MPH Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/26/67 |

Notes: Tom started his '82 season at Tucson Dragway on January 17 for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show. In the first round, he beat Tom Hoover with a 6.42. In the semifinal, he picked up to a 6.38, but he lost to Ed Moore's 6.21 (Low ET). He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In March, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field, and he lasted until the semifinals before his 6.44/223.76 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.24/230 in Johnny Loper's "Little Hoss" Arrow. On May 2, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. In the first round, he beat Larry Gould with a 7.23/197.80, but the Corvette came to the line ailing in the semifinals, and he could only coax a 15.53 out of it. We needless to say, he lost the race to Tom Hovland. His next stop was at Fremont for the second NHRA Division 6 race. Tom qualified #5 with a 6.22/226.70. He beat low qualifier Craig Epperly in the first round, before losing to eventual winner Mike Dunn in the semifinals. At the AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International, he lost in the first round, to John Force when he crossed the center line. Tom qualified #2 with a 6.14. McEwen had been shying away from the NHRA meets for most of the year, but he made an exception and ran at the NHRA Springnationals on June 13. A 6.13/236.84 qualified #13, but he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round. At the AHRA Western Nationals at Bonneville Raceway, Tom won his first-round race over Gary Densham with a 6.33/225. Still, it cost him an engine, and he was unable to run in the semifinal. Densham was reinstated on the "break rule." On August 22, McEwen picked up a big win at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. A first-round 5.99/236 beat Hank Johnson, and in the semifinal, he roared to a 5.93/249.30 (Top Speed) over Ed McCulloch. In the final, he ran a 6.11 for the victory over Densham's 6.49. Times given at Spokane were questionable at best during this time. However, he did back up the speed when he qualified at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.00/249.30. That time got him the #13 spot on the grid. He made it into the second round before losing to Don Prudhomme. | 6.220 248.75 AHRA US 30 1982 losing in the first round to Don Prudhomme. (Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds). - Danny White |

Notes: Dale Pulde started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #7 with a 6.109/245.23. But he lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.43/224 in the first round with a 6.86/241.93 when both had traction problems. Shortly after that, he took a break and got married. In March, Dale was back behind the wheel at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.00/247.93 qualified #12, and in the opening round, his 6.05/238.72 beat a tire-smoking Ken Veney. A second-round 6.02/241.28 beat John Lombardo's 6.05/239. He got lucky in the semifinals, where he smoked the tires and shut down to a 7.95, but opponent Tom Anderson was disqualified for crossing the centerline. He faced Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the final. Frank had been running low 5.9s throughout eliminations, and although Pulde picked it up to 5.98/243.36 in the final, he still finished runner-up to Hawley's 5.92/242. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals the following week. A 6.39/228.42 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but he lost in a tire-smoker with Bernstein in the semifinals. Things didn't go so well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and Pulde couldn't get near the 6.00 "bump" as the best run he had in qualifying was a 6.47/175.09. So after not qualifying there, he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals, where he qualified #1 with a 5.98 (Low ET) at a track speed record of 247.25. He then went on to win, stopping Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the final with a 6.11/240 to Beadle's 6.20. Dale ran the Fuel Wars program at Fremont in April. He made passes of 6.62/172, 6.74/210, and 6.84, winning 1 out of 3 matches. He qualified to the "bump" for the eight-car field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.08/245.23 but his opening round 6.14/238.72 lost to Bernstein's 6.02/242. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, his 6.01 qualified last in the eight-car field. An opening round 6.31/194.38 beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" car, but in the semifinal, his 5.89/247 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.81/246. The following week(June 12), he was at Columbus. He qualified #6 for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.00/245.23, and in round one, his 6.07/243.24 beat Tom McEwen's quicker 6.06/234. In round two, his 6.40/229.59 lost to Johnson's 6.19/234. He was at Maple Grove near the end of the month for the Super Stock Nationals, where he lasted until the semifinal of the eight-car show before losing to eventual winner Hawley. He did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He did race at the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he became the sixth entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car with a 252.80 run on July 10, 1983, at Milan, Michigan. He failed to reach the final there. The following week (July 17), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.08/243.24 qualified #13. In the opening round, his 6.16 fell to Al Segrini's 5.96. The NHRA Mile High Nationals was just an eight-car show, and Pulde ran 6.15/231.95 to qualify #7. In round one, he slowed to 6.29/229.00 in a loss to Bernstein's 6.08/237. Dale also ran 249.30 in 1983. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1983. |

Notes: Frank was driving this car at the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Bremerton. He did well, beating his old ride, Jim Green's "Green Elephant," now driven by Mike Miller. His 6.78/220.58 got the victory when Miller broke in the final. Earlier, Hall set Top Speed at 225.00. He then went to Seattle for the Northwest Open. A first-round 6.85/203.14 beat Twig Zeigler, but he broke on the run and could not return for the semifinals. Spokane hosted the AHRA Springnationals early in June, and Frank lost to Danny Ongais in the opening round. At the second NHRA Division 6 race at Mission Raceway in B.C., Hall broke in the semifinals, but he did manage to set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.55/223.32. He did win the third Division 6 race held at Edmonton. There a final round 6.41/225.00 beat Miller's 6.58/195. Frank was the first alternate at NHRA Indy with a 6.531/226.13. He was the second alternate at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.56/177.86. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Drag Racing List has 5.845/250.69 times from Maple Grove national event. | Larson attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.31/168.53 failed to make the field. In March he faced off with Dominic Santucci for a best of three match race at Englishtown. Larson won two straight running times of 6.28/230.76 and 6.17/238.09. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his best of 6.28/225.79 failed to qualify. He competed at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.22 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.00 before losing in the semifinals. Bruce got into the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 6.25/220.26 held the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Johnny West in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He qualified #13 with a 6.02/237.21 at the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Magazine Nationals and Larson was there, running a 6.03/233.76 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier (5.62) Kenny Bernstein. Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.00/144.69 that lost to Kenny's 5.75/254. In late June he followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. Only twelve cars showed for the sixteen-car show so qualifying wasn't a problem. Bruce ran a 6.12/240.12 to qualify #11. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off, losing to Billy Meyer's ailing 9.22/91. On July 2, Englishtown held its Funny Car Spectacular. Larson lost to West's 5.78/258 in the first round, with a 6.31/184.04, but he got back in on the "break rule." So in round two he ran Roy Harris, but Bruce had problems and shut off to a 9.10-86.04 that lost to Roy's 6.39/180. He was back at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals where he ran a 5.99/243.11 to qualify on the "bump." In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover. On August 3, he competed at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #8 with a 6.20 in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Scott Kalitta in the first round. The following week (August 9), he was at the US Funny Car Nationals where he ran a 6.19/236.22 to qualify #6 in the six car show. He lost early. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, his best of 6.07/237.59 was good for the sixth alternate spot. He also attempted to make the show at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but he had problems and failed to qualify with a 7.32/118.18 best. In the season long NHRA points chase he finished #19. |

Notes: One of greatest out of nowhere runs in NHRA history. Jefferson previous best was in the 6.30's. Jefferson began the year with the old style Corvette that he ran at the NHRA D4 Green Valley race but was replaced with this new body. Car was destroyed early next year at the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. |

Notes: Jim started the season at Pomona, where he qualified #11 with a 5.29/282.48. Another 5.29 at 288.27 advanced in round one, when his opponent, Ray Higley, broke. In round two, an off pace of 5.61/225.16 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.38/281. Epler qualified #2 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.19/290.97 behind Hofmann's 5.14. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.26/288.73 beat Dean Skuza's 5.38/272. In the second round, Jack Wyatt fouled against him, and Jim's 5.81/180.46 advanced. He lost to Tom Hoover in the semifinal. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Slick 50 Nationals. Jim's 5.32/280.51 "only" qualified #11. He had a close race in the opening round that saw his 5.31/289.85 beat Tony Pedregon's 5.32/282, but he lost to the eventual winner Hofmann, in round two. The NHRA Gatornationals was not a memorable outing for Epler. He only qualified #15 with a 5.35/285.26, and he lost to Skuza in round one. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals held in mid-April. His 5.31/286.98 qualified #9, and in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Chuck Etchells. Shortly after that, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. There he ran 5.38/287.90 to qualify #11. An easy 6.34/150.40 advanced in round one, when Whit Bazemore got out of shape and shut down, but in round two, his 5.31/288.36 fell to Etchells' 5.20/293. |

Notes: Dale didn't run at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, but he was at the NHRA Gatornationals in mid-March. He qualified #5 with a 6.06/233.76, but he shut off when the car went into a wheelstand in the first round. His 6.94/149.00 lost to Al Segrini, who had his own problems at 6.40/223. In April, he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 Opener. He qualified #3 with a 6.49/218.97 and went on to win. In the first round, he ran 6.41/197.80 over Dominic Santucci's 6.92/170. He then set Low ET and Top Speed in the semi-final at 6.25/231.36 while defeating Tim Grose's 6.74/195. In the final, his 6.30/226.13 got the victory over Murf McKinney's 7.21. Near the end of April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was a tough eight-car field, and drivers such as Raymond Beadle, Don Prudhomme, and Dale Pulde failed to make it. Dale did, however, run 6.16/234.98 for the #7 spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, running a 6.30/218.34 best that was good for the third alternate. He didn't run at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, but he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #5 with a 6.05/232. He ran his best NHRA national event times of the year with a 6.049/238.72 defeat of Tom McEwen but lost the second round to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." The following week (July 20), Dale was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he qualified #6. He lost to Dick Rosberg in the first round. In August, he won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove. Armstrong set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.20/231.95 to beat future employer Kenny Bernstein. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. He ran 6.20/233.76 to qualify #2. In round one, he picked up to a 6.10 (Low ET) at 236.22 to beat a tire-smoking Al Segrini. In the semifinals, his 6.15 beat John Force, who also smoked the tires. In the final, he faced off against Pulde. This time, the "Speed Racer" smoked the tires, Armstrong shut off, and Pulde got the victory with a 6.16/237. He got another win on August 17 at the NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend. Dale set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.08. He beat Paul Smith in the "Sting" in the first round, with a 6.21/227.84, and he ran an easy single in the semifinals to go into the final against Billy Meyer. The two had a good race, but Dale's 6.16/236.84 got the win over Meyer's close 6.20/238. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified #14 with a 6.10/234.98. In the first round, an off pace 6.39/220.58 lost to Meyer's 6.13/229. The following week (September 7), he was at Jackson County Sports Park in Medford for the NHRA Division race there. Dale qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.42/221.13. He ran 6.54/216.86 to beat Gary Lewis in the first round, but in the semifinals, his 6.38/218.97 lost to eventual winner Beadle's 6.09/235. Mike Kase owner; wrecked Challenger bodied car. Ran 6.101/234.08 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80. |

Notes: Kosty started the '80 season strong. At the AHRA Winternationals, he qualified #4 and lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.050/240.64. He beat Tom Ridings and Gordie Bonin in the first two rounds before getting out of shape in the semifinals and running a 7.21 that lost to Ron Colson's 6.34 in the "Hawaiian." In March, he won the Englishtown FC opener by beating Roy Harris in the final with a 6.08. In April, he won the Spring Funny Car Bonanza at Englishtown. It was an eight-car show, and his first-round 6.35/229.00 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.84/204. In the semifinals, his 6.25/233.76 beat Stan Bowman's 6.82/214. In the final, he ran Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" Mustang that had set Low ET and Top Speed. They both smoked the tires, and Ivanof's 7.76/223.32 got the victory. Kosty was at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the opening round of competition. He ran 6.11/240.00 to qualify #9 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max."Beadle's 6.14/241 sent Kosty's 6.29/236.22 packing for home. The final NHRA Division One race was held in New England on August 17, and Ivanof qualified #6 with a 6.23/217.39. In the first round, an off-pace 6.51/205.01 lost to Rick Johnson's 6.16/232. He was back at Englishtown shortly after that for the US All-Pro Championships. It was an eight-car show, and Kosty's 6.61/210.77 in the first round lost to Harris' 6.19/200. He won his fourth Englishtown race of the season at its FC final in October. He made runs of 6.51 and 6.38 to make the final. In the final, his 6.43/232.55 stopped Al Hofmann. Where did Kosty run 241.93? |

Notes: Jim's answer to Bernstein's Batmobile car. Jim was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he failed to qualify. He exploded a supercharger on one attempt, and his best of 5.85/243.04 was good for the second alternate. Atlanta held an eight-car show in March, run in conjunction with the NHRA Division 2 race. It was initially scheduled for the 8th, but it was postponed one week to the 15th due to rain. Jim qualified #2 in the field with a 5.85/222.22. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the first round, with a 5.94/237.46. In the semifinals, he ran an easy solo pass when Johnny West could not run after hurting his engine in the "Hawaiian." In the final, Jim was up against low qualifier Tom Hoover. Head reset the track record with a 5.66 at 234.37 to get the victory over Hoover's 6.01/228. Due to the rain delay, Jim could not race at the IHRA Winternationals as it was run the same day as the Atlanta event. So, the following week (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.76/251.81 qualified #12. A first-round 5.70/253.30 beat a tire-smoking Beadle, but in round two, he smoked the tires to 6.75/119.11 and lost to West's 5.81/248. The next stop was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was an eight-car field, and Jim's best of 5.71/254.88 failed to make the show. Head debuted his new "Batmobile" Firenza at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he ran 5.81/256.41 to qualify #10 for the show. Only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying was easy. In the first round, he had a blower explode, and he slowed to 6.10/187.03 in a loss to John Force's 6.01/253. Shortly after that, he went to Maple Grove for the Spring Funny Car Nationals. He qualified for the final by running 5.82. The other finalist was Bruce Larson, who had run 5.79. Jim got off the line first in the final, and his 5.78/222.22 held off Bruce's quicker 5.72/247 for the title. He was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 5.81 behind Kenny Bernstein's 5.67. These two would work their way to the final. Jim ran 5.91/250.00 over Scott Kalitta and 5.93/247.93 in the semifinals to advance when Mark Oswald broke in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Bernstein had the edge as he had run 5.70s to reach the final. Sure enough, Kenny reached deep into his bag of tricks in the final and came up with a 5.61/256 to win over Jim's runner-up effort of 5.89/248. The Cajun Nationals was the second NHRA national event in a row that only had sixteen fuel funnies show. A 5.93/233.28 qualified Jim #6, and in round one, his 5.95/246.23 beat Pat Walsh's 6.09/232. He improved to 5.88/225 in round two to advance when Force broke on the line. But in the semifinals, he had problems and slowed to 7.42/132.17 in a loss to West's 5.68/253. In June, Jim was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.92/244.56 and an opening-round 5.89/242.98 beat Larson. He surprised a tire-smoking Hoover in the second round with another 5.92 at 250.27 to advance into the semifinals, where he would meet Dominic Santucci. Jim ran his best ET of the weekend, a 5.84 at 246.23, to beat Santucci's 5.99/247. In the final, he faced Billy Meyer, who had not won an NHRA event since 1984. Meyer changed all that by running 5.84/251 to claim the victory over Head's troubled 7.07/132.80. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The field was one car short, but Jim still reeled off a 5.85/248.62 to qualify #6. An opening round 5.90/241.61 beat Jerry Caminito's 6.08/236 but in round two, his off-pace 6.33/156.63 fell to Ed McCulloch's 5.88/247. Back in the US for the NHRA Sunmmernationals held at Englishtown in July, he was the first alternate at 5.87/235.47 when twenty-four cars attempted to qualify. Not long after that (July 26), he was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Head qualified #12 with a 6.01/235.29, but he went out early when his 6.05/234.92 lost to Oswald's 5.90/247 in the opening round. Twenty-one cars showed to attempt to qualify at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals held in Mid-August. Jim got the #11 spot in the field with his 5.73/244.89. A tire-smoking shut-off 12.37 lost to Meyer's 5.70/259 in round one. RH |
