Notes: Dale was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5.465/274.39 to qualify #11. He improved to a 5.366/269.70 to beat Tom Hoover's close 5.37/275 in the first round. In round two, he ran 5.378/268.97 over Art Hendey's 5.66/225. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.89/235. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Dale ran 5.386/270.51 to qualify #7. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one, 5.335/262.39 to 5.43/263, and in the second round, his 5.329/268.81 beat Hoover's 5.47/266. Pulde moved into the final by getting around John Force in the semifinals. It was a close race as both drivers ran 5.33 (Dale at 5.330/260.86, John at 5.334/274), but the "In-N-Out Burger" car got the win. In the final, Dale was up against the '89 NHRA Champ, Bruce Larson. Bruce had problems and shut off while Pulde motored to a 5.371/266.27 for the victory. The team also ran at Sonoma (5.665/262.46 Q16 and a first-round loss to Larson, 5.30/276 to 5.672/247.04), Seattle (5.703/262.92 Q15 and a first-round loss to Jim White, 5.44/262 to 7.30/112), and the Pomona Finals (5.672/261.39 second alternate).

Notes: Terry Hedrick HUGE on the side of the car. AKA 'Super Shaker.' Hedrick drove Pete Seaton's Super Shaker Corvair in '67 and '68. In 1969, they built a new Chevy II Nova with a Logghe Chassis featuring independent front suspension. Early in the year, Terry bought out Pete and renamed the car Terry Hedrick's Super Shaker. Same orange, black, and white paint scheme. In 1971 Terry changed to the Camaro body shown here. Speed of 228.42 was originally listed but seems too fast for 1971. We need confirmation. | In mid-May, Hedrick retired the Chevy powerplant for a 426 Hemi. Terry built his first 426 using cast-off parts donated by Gary Dyer, Don Schumacher, and Pat Minick. The first time out with the Hemi, he ran 202. By the end of May, he was up to 208. On May 2, Hedrick was at Union Grove for its Manufacturer's Meet. He bent a rod on his warm-up pass and was unable to run in eliminations. Early in May, he was in Minnesota for a four-car show. He eased to an 8.00/198.23 win in his first race when Gary Dyer, driving the "Mr. Norm" car, had a small fire on the line and shut off. In his second race, Terry’s 7.95/200 lost to Pat Minick's 7.10/213.27 in the "Chi-Town Hustler.” The car broke on that pass, and he was unable to make a third run. In mid-month, he ran at Martin, Michigan, for an eleven car show, but he failed to reach the finals. He did reach the final at Epping, but he finished runner-up to Gene Snow there. He won two of his three races at Aquasco's Ford vs. Chevy Funny Car race. This is where he debuted the Hemi. A 7.46 beat Larry Fullerton's 7.65 in his first race, but Grove's tough Mustang handed him a loss in the second race where Terry's 7.48/202.70 lost to Tommy's 7.29/202. In his third race, his 8.00/198.72 beat Lew Arrington's "Brutus" at 8.14/199. Martin, Michigan, held an eight-car show over the Memorial Day Weekend where all cars made three runs. Hedrick did not do too well here as he lost all three races to Roger Lindamood, McEwen, and Minick, in that order. Hedrick was back in Minnesota on May 27 for another four-car show. In his first race, his 7.84/181.81 lost to Richard Tharp's 7.16/179 in the "Blue Max. In his second race, he got out the track and onto the sand for a couple of hundred feet before clicking it off to 13.75/157.89 in a loss to Tommy Grove's 7.37/207. In their third race, these two raced again, with Grove's Ford-powered car coming out on top with a 7.56/202 over Hedrick's 7.82/198.67. He was at Bristol on June 20 for the IHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. This car came to an end at Rockingham on September 26 while attempting to qualify for the IHRA US Open. The car caught fire, and his fire bottles failed. Terry received burns to his hands but was otherwise OK. The Hemi-powered Camaro burned to the ground. Terry was the third alternate at NHRA Gainesville (no times reported).

Notes: Twig started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Traction there was non-existent, and he ended up as the seventh alternate for the sixteen-car field. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 7.15 qualified #8 for the sixteen-car show. In the first round, Bob Pickett got crossed up against him in the "Lil Demon." But in round two, his 7.48 lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.25 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. In April, he was at Renegade Raceway in Washington for a best of three match race against Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian." The match didn't go too well as he lost three straight to the Charger. Twig qualified #1 with a 6.67 in the eight-car field at Portland International's opener. In the first round, he got some revenge on Chadderton when his 6.67/208 beat Leroy's 6.77/215. In the semifinals, Zeigler stayed consistent, running 6.68/218.44 to beat Mike Snively's 6.71/196 in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. He faced Gordie Bonin in the final, and Twig had some problems and shut down to 10.53 while Bonin grabbed the victory with his strong 6.64 run. On April 29, Seattle held its annual Northwest Open race. It was a sixteen-car show, and Twig qualified #9. In the opening round of eliminations, his troubled 8.92 lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch's 6.62. Twig was back home at Portland on July 29 for the fourth NHRA Division Six race. He won the race with a 6.69/220.58 in the final over Denny Savage's 7.18/193 in the "Rat Trap." Zeigler did pretty well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He ran 6.394/230.17 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, against Bobby Rowe and shut down to 11.81. Twig qualified #5 at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals with a 6.415/229.68. In the first round, his 6.53/222.77 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.41/226. Twig also ran 6.47 at Portland. Notes: Blown fuel-128" square-tube chrome moly chassis by R&B Automotive. Fiberglass Ltd. body. The car debuted later in the 1966 season, running most of 1967. - DD | Gary Dyer's new '67 mount was up and running late in '66. Owner Norm Krause of Grand-Spaulding Dodge in Chicago estimated the new Charger cost about $25,000. That was a very high dollar amount in those days. It took eight months to build. The engine was a stock-sized 426 Hemi that used M/T rods and 8.5:1 pistons. Racer Brown supplied the roller cam. The only modifications to the heads were a polish job by Dyer, although the valves were from Donovan. The blower drive and manifold came from Cragar, and the GMC 6/71 was overdriven 17%. A Hilborn gear-driven pump and fuel injection delivered the 40% nitro to the engine. Dyer had little engine trouble in '66, with most of his troubles coming from transmission breakage. The TorqueFlite was used again for this car, but this time the aluminum planetary shafts were replaced by custom-built steel ones. The power was put to the ground through a Mopar rear that ran either 3.70 or 3.90 gears, depending on the track. The total weight of the car was 1,920 lbs. Grand-Spaulding Dodge painted the Charger a Rally Red enamel with silver leaf. ET Fontana 1966 (12/02/66 Drag News) MPH Fontana 1966 (12/02/66 Drag News)

Notes: Ed qualified #7 with a 6.517/218.97 at the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 6.52/220.58 beat Sush Matsubara at 7.10/198, but a second-round 6.63/203.61 lost to Frank Hall's 6.39/217. He got a big win at Bakersfield on March 3 when final-round opponent Twig Zeigler broke. Still, Ed hustled to a 6.44/223.32 for the win. He had earlier set Top Speed at 226.70. Ed found himself in another final on March 17 at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Ed set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.38 over Gene Snow. He fell off to a 6.91/186 in the final that lost to Tom McEwen's strong 6.41/212. He was runner-up again on April 6 at the OCIR AHRA Grand American. Ed ran 6.62/221.67 over Danny Ongais' 6.68/220, 6.70/221.67 over Don Prudhomme, and a 6.59/223.88 solo when Bob Pickett broke on the line in the semifinal. In the final, he lost to Jim Dunn's 6.66/220. He then stopped at Irwindale for the big 30 car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. In the opening round, he beat Gerry Glenn with a 6.64/203.61 but had problems in round two and shut off to 7.47 in a loss to Dunn's 6.37. McCulloch always ran well at Seattle, and in May, it was no exception for the fifth annual Northwest Open. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show, meaning he had to run low qualifier Prudhomme in the first round. Ed won, running a 6.47/213.27, while Don crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 6.37/225 over Ken Goodell's 6.43/218. Somehow Prudhomme had gotten reinstated and had made it to the final to face Ed again. This time, McCulloch got out of shape (15.27) and settled for runner-up again. At the AHRA Springnationals held at Spokane, McCulloch qualified #6 and beat Mike Miller in the first round, before losing to Danny Ongais in round two. In June, a 6.453/227.27 (Top Speed) qualified #4 at the NHRA Springnationals, but a sleepy first-round 6.847/214.79 lost to Paul Smith's 7.00/214. The Rockford Manufacturer's Meet at Byron Dragway was Ed's next stop. All cars were to run three races, and Ed won his first with a 6.63/218.97. In his second race, his 6.64/217.91 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.44/223 in Don Schumacher's car, and in his final race, he lost a motor, giving Cliff Brown an easy win. In July, he finished runner-up to Gene Snow at the AHRA Drag Nationals at Kansas City when he fouled away a 6.51 in the final. Ed qualified #5 in the field with a 6.60/211.76 and beat low qualifier Shirl Greer in the second round with a 6.53/222.77 over Shirl's quicker 6.50. In the semifinals, a 6.57 dropped Dale Creasy. Another runner-up finish came the following week (July 13) at Capitol Raceway's King of Kings Funny Car race. Ed was not running up to par as he beat Russell Long with a 7.01/171.39 and an 8.17/135 beat Beadle's tire-smoker in the semifinals. In the final, he did pick up to 6.94/226.19, but it was still second best to Al Segrini's 6.65/210. The next day he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.375/229.00 qualified #3. In the first round, the car went into a wheelstand and lost to eventual winner Segrini at 6.60/197. On July 25, he was at Maple Grove for their All-American Series race. In the opening round, he beat Tom Prock's 6.63/204 with a 6.45/205.94. Ed set Low ET in the second round with a 6.40/222.22 over Jim Liberman. In the semifinals, he broke a brake caliper and could not stage against Kosty Ivanof. The Super Stock Magazine Nationals was held at York US 30 near the end of July, and it featured two Funny Car fields. One was called the Independents, and the other was the NHRA class cars. Ed raced in the NHRA class as both were eight-car shows. He opened with a 6.93/221.67 to beat Jimmy Boyd, while a semifinal 7.31 advanced when Bill Leavitt fouled. He ran the "Frantic Ford" driven by Dodger Glenn in the final, and his 6.69/209.30 took the victory over Glenn's troubled 7.53/154. Back to Seattle in August, he set Low ET at a track record 6.27 and had Top Speed at 231, and won the Seafair 64 car show over Jerry Ruth. He was favored to win at the Irwindale Grand Prix race. There he set Low ET with a 6.38 at 219.51 in beating Dave Condit, but in the semifinals, he was surprised by Mike Halloran, whose 6.50/220 outran his 6.59/206.89. The next stop was at Tulsa for the AHRA American Challenge race. McCulloch qualified #3 and lasted until the semifinals, where he went up in smoke against Prudhomme. Then came the "big one," the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. Ed's 6.375/227.27 qualified #5, and an even better 6.319/210.77 beat Dunn's 7.09/138 in the first round. But in round two, he got out of shape and shut off against Billy Meyer, who was long gone, setting Low ET with a 6.19/218. He then got another runner-up finish at the AHRA Grandnationals, where Prudhomme beat him in the final. Ed qualified #5 at the Ontario World Finals with a 6.365/226.13. He beat Gordie Bonin in round one, 6.428/216.34 to 6.55/226, and beat Mike Miller in round two, 6.315/220.58 to 6.86/200. Ed kept rolling in the semis, taking out Jim Dunn, 6.384/209.79 to 7.04/144. However, in the final, Dave Condit got the win in the Plueger & Gyger Mustang, 6.24/212, to Ed's consistent 6.338/225.56. Notes: Runner up to Don Prudhomme at the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on December 12/1970. Ran 7.42/175 at OCIR on 4/18/70. He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day race, but there he lost in the first round, to Clyde Morgan's Javelin at 8.05 to Gene's off pace 8.25. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on Jan 4, he beat Morgan in the first round, and a 7.50/195.22 in the semis beat Arnie Behling's quicker (Low ET) 7.43/172.08 in Don Schumacher's old car. In the final, Charlie Allen lost a trans and an easy 7.76/187.89 gave him his first win of '70. Another win came at the second OCIR All-Pro event on January 18 when Dick Bourgeois fouled against him in the first round, and Dave Beebe lost a trans against him in the semifinal. In the final, Conway ran an 8.58 to win over Tommy Grove who lost a trans on the line. At an eight-car show at Lions on February 14, Gene broke against Jim Liberman in the first round. The following day (February 15) at Irwindale he had more bad luck when he crossed the centerline in the first round, and was disqualified. He qualified third with a 7.68. At the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22, a first-round win foretold the final. Gene's 7.33/200.89 beat Jake Johnston's quicker 7.28/181.08 in the Blue Max. In the semis, a best-ever (to that point) of 7.27/201.79 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.50/194.38. In the final, he met Johnston again who had gotten back in with the break rule. Gene's quicker 7.35/201.34 lost to Jake's 7.37/189.47. OCIR held another eight-car race on March 14 and Gene advanced to the semifinal before fouling against Warren Gunter's VW. At the final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28, Gene lost a rear-end in the first round. Back at Irwindale on April 4 for an eight-car event, a first-round 7.86/172.08 advanced him into the semis where Mike Snively's 7.81/192.30 beat his 7.92/186.32. He then went to OCIR and won the Corvette Funny Car Championships. He beat Marv Eldridge in the final with a 7.54 (Low ET) at 182.55. Another runner-up finish and another broken rear end came on April 18 at OCIR. A first-round 7.35/197.36 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.41/198.23 in the Invader. A semifinal 7.42/175.43 beat Ray Alley's 7.44/191.08, but Dave Beebe won in the final where Conway broke. OCIR held its Big Four Championships on May 2. A 32-car field saw Gene run 7.95/141 and 7.86/179.28 over Jack Chrisman's close 7.88/185.56 and an 8.13/153 before breaking in the semis against Manual Herrera. On May 30 at the OCIR Funny Car 500, Conway fouled away a 7.42/198.23 against Snively in the first round. He lost again in the first round, on June 20 at OCIR's March of Dimes event. Arnie Behling's Low ET blast of 7.25/199.50 beat his 7.74/195.65. Snively must have had a hex on Gene because on July 3 for the OCIR Nitro Championships Conway again fouled against him in the first round. The next day at Irwindale for the fourth of July Championships, he went all the way to the finals before losing to Arnie Behling. On July 11 at the AHRA All-American at Lions, Gene got out of shape (8.33) in the first round, and lost to Roger Wolford (7.54/188.28). A win came at a sixteen-car field at Irwindale on July 17. He qualified #1 with a 7.67/190.26 (Top Speed) and beat Dave Beebe in the final with Low ET at 7.63. He then won the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 25, beating Ray Alley in the final with a 7.65/181.81. On August 1 at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships, he ran a 7.42/188.28 in the first round, and a 7.73/177.51 in the second before his car caught fire in the semis. Gene was OK. Conway fixed the car and installed a Crowerglide clutch set up with a Lenco two-speed transmission. With this set up, he showed up at OCIR on August 15 for their Anniversary Race. A first-round 7.27/188.28 beat Leroy Hales' 7.84/184. In the second round, a 7.33/194.80 beat Bob McFarland's 7.97/176 and in the semifinal, a 7.70/200 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.84/177. In the final, Gene ran his best ever speed and ET of 7.18/206.89 over Mike Snively's 7.30/203. On August 29 back at OCIR for an eight-car show, Gene ran a first-round 7.03/204.68 and a semifinal 7.10/202.70 lost to Snively's 7.12/205.47. A runner-up finish on September 12 at Irwindale followed. He ran 7.44/194.80 and 7.42/197.80 to reach the finals before losing to Snively's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.26/204.54 to Gene's 7.45/177.51. On September 26 at Lions for the Anniversary Race, Ed Lenarth's 7.42/181.81 beat his 7.61/132.74 in the first round. At the OCIR East-West Championships on October 10, Gene's 7.19/198.67 beat Snively's 7.30/205.01 in the West portion of the race, but for the overall title he lost to Don Schumacher. Conway had run a best of 7.09/201.34 at the race. Gene (7.23/184.80) lost to Dave Beebe (7.09/198.23) in the first round, at the next event on October 24 at Lions, followed by a runner-up finish to John Collins in John Bateman's Maverick at the Pumpkin Day Open at Irwindale. He qualified fifth with a 7.30 and ran a first-round 7.28/208.32 over Larry Arnold. A semifinal 7.37/205.46 beat Charlie Therwhanger, but Collins' 7.23/200.88 beat his 7.44/188.24 in the final. At Irwindale for a 32 car show on November 14, Gene smoked the tires and lost to Arnold's 7.09/208.80 (Top Speed) in the second round. Gene qualified fifth on November 21 at Lions for an eight-car show. He ran 7.28/185.18 to beat a wheelstanding Randy Walls in the first round, before smoking the tires to a losing 15.50-58 in the semis against Bob Pickett who won with an 8.49/131. Gene failed to qualify for Irwindale's Toys for tots race. He had a streak of luck when number eight qualifier Larry Arnold broke and Conway got into the show. He almost went all the way, beating Ron O'Donnell in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro in the first round, with a 7.29/196.05 and then beating Jim Liberman in the ailing "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with a 7.37/200.44. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Don had been running in the sixes on every run and in the final it was no different as the "Snake's" 6.92/192 beat Conway who crossed the centerline. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed at 6.925/218.97. Notes: At the Irwindale Grand Premiere, Halloran qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, his 6.59/221.12 lost to Jim Liberman's 6.51/207. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Mike won the OCIR Nitro Championships in July. He ran 6.36 and 6.52 on his way to the final where he met and beat Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's Mustang for the title. It wasn't long after that, he won again at OCIR for the PDA Championships. It was a twelve car show, and he ran a best of 6.56/222.22 (Top Speed) on the way to the final where he met with Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker." Both drivers had trouble in the final, but Mike's 8.46/171.42 got the victory over Dave's 9.07/123.

Notes: Photo from 1975 US Nationals. Jake drove for Pisano at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He was substituting for Sush Matsubara due to injuries Sush had received from a motorcycle crash the week before. The car suffered a bad fire at the Bakersfield March Meet. Jake qualified the Vega with a 6.46/203.16 for the #8 spot in the twelve car field. A first-round 6.29/225.56 beat Gordie Bonin's 6.46/223, but in round two, his 6.71 lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde's 6.46 in the "Eastern Raider.” Unfortunately, at the top end of the track, a gasket let go and the car went up in flames. Jake got it stopped and got out OK, but the car was charred pretty good. It didn't take the team long to repair the damage as just two weeks later (March 16), they were at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West. It was a sixteen-car show and Johnston qualified #4 with a 6.70. He made his way to the final by beating Leroy Chadderton with a 6.86/208.81 followed by a 6.90/187.50 in round two over Bob Pickett who was driving the "Lil' Demon.” A semifinal 6.95/186.33 trailered Gary Densham and moved him into the final. His final round opponent was the #1 qualifier (6.57) Tom McEwen. The edge would have to go to McEwen as he ran a best of 6.58 during eliminations. The final turned out to be close; Jake improved to 6.78/220.04, but still lost to McEwen's 6.77/213. He lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round, at the Northern Nationals at Fremont. In May, Jake won the Irwindale Fox Hunt race, stopping Gary Burgin in the final. Another win at Irwindale came in June at its Doubleheader event. It was an eight-car field and Johnston beat Densham and Fred Mooneyham to reach the final. There he faced Jim Dunn. The two had a good race with Jake's 6.57/223.26 (Top Speed) getting the measure of Dunn's 6.67/220. Jake qualified #13 at Indy at 6.368/223.32. He lost a close first-round match to Gene Snow, 6.283/230.17 to 6.322/214.28. The team qualified #10 at Ontario at 6.331/225.00, but again, lost in the first round. Norm Wilcox’s outstanding 6.164/218.97 took the measure of their improved 6.311/220.04. ET from Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/75

Notes: Qualified on the bump at the 1972 NHRA Supernationals with a 6.518. Lost to Danny Ongais in the first round. Ran 6.58 at Beech Bend. | The '72 version of the "Super Duster" used a 118" Don Hardy chassis. The transmission was a Lenco 2-speed that fed the power back to a Dana rear with 4.10 gears. The car weighed in at 1,875 lbs. Bill Taylor and former driver Larry Reyes built the 426 Hemi. It used a Reath crank that supported Brooks rods. The pistons were by Forged True. Lunati supplied the roller cam, the lifters, and the springs. Up top, the Bowers 6.71 blower sat on a Cragar manifold. Cragar was also the choice for the blower drive. The injection came from Enderle. The "Super Duster" of Taylor and Stanley Wolff was still in primer when it showed up at Miami-Hollywood on February 13 for the Winter Championships. Gary Henderson drove the car to a 6.95/182.92 on its first full pass. That was good enough to qualify low for the eight-car field. He made it into the final against Jim Liberman, but the car broke, and he had to watch as "Jungle Jim" soloed for the victory. The team was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Gary qualified #7, which was pretty good considering that almost 40 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but in the first round, he slowed to 7.33 that finished second best to Joe Jacono's 6.92. Early in April, he was at Chandler Raceway, Indiana, competing against Dale Pulde, Preston Davis, and the "Chi-Town Hustler" in a four-car match. He did not turn any outstanding times there, but on April 9, he won an eight-car show at St. Louis. An opening round 7.02 beat the "Phantom" Corvette driven by Paul Gordon, and in the semifinals, he beat Grover Rogers in the "Motivation" Mustang. He faced Rogers again in the final as Grover got back in on the "break rule," and Henderson set Low ET to win with a 6.91. He got another victory at Atco's Funny Car Championships run on April 23. There he set both ends of the track record with a 6.61/216.00. He stopped Bill Leavitt in the run for the money. He competed at the Connecticut Memorial Day Funny Car Championships, where he won his first-round race with a 7.06, but he lost soon after. Early in June, he was at Maple Grove for the Pennsylvania Dutch Classic. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, against Roy Harris in the "Frantic Ford," who was having his own problems and sputtered down the track with an 8.45 to win. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Gary qualified #11, but an off-pace 7.24 in round one, lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch's 6.73. The following week (June 18), he was at Rockford for the East-West Meet. A 7.07 qualified #4 there, but he failed to reach the finals. Henderson failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He was back at Connecticut for the Summer Funny Car Championship where his 7.15 beat Tony Wahlay's "Warlord" in the opening round, but in round two, he lost to Liberman. In August, the "Super Duster" was at Atco for the CARS Magazine Championships. Gary ran a 6.95/207.37 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to stop Leavitt, who ran a track record 6.47 at 219, to send Gary home. At the NHRA US Nationals at Indy, he lost to McCulloch in the first round, after qualifying #10 with a great 6.59/223.32. He was disappointed at New England's Funny Car Nationals, where the Duster broke in the first round. Dallas was the next stop for the IHRA Nationals. Gary’s 6.79 qualified #12, and he improved to 6.63 in the first round, to beat Billy Meyer. In round two, he thumped Connie Kalitta with a 6.66, but despite running a strong 6.61/214 in the semifinal, he lost to Dave Condit's 6.55/222 in the "L. A. Hooker."

Notes: After driving for Mike Burkhart in '72, Raymond Beadle jumped behind the wheel of one of Don Schumacher's ‘Cudas in '73. He was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals where he qualified #17 in the 32 car field with a 6.71/222.22. A first-round 6.94/176.81 lost to Pat Foster's 6.57/231. Things didn't go so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There were 58 cars trying to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Raymond's best was good for the tenth alternate. Early in June he was at Denver's Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.85 and in the opening round, beat Charlie Therwhanger with a 6.83/207.85. A second round 6.82 took out Larry Christopherson, but he lost to the race's eventual winner Dale Pulde driving Mickey Thompson's Grand Am, in the semifinals. He went to Tri-City soon after that, for a best of three match with the "King Cobra" which saw Beadle win three straight with times of 7.15/199.55, 6.84/206.42, and a solo 6.76/217.39. Early in July he won the AHRA Grand American race at Kansas City. He qualified #3 with a 6.70 then ran 6.88 to beat Gene Snow. In round two he stopped Cogo Eads with a 6.67. In the semifinals, he was matched against Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" lost oil pressure and had to shut off so Beadle soloed into the final. There he ran Jim Nicoll and both had traction problems, but Raymond's 7.39/223.88 got the victory over Jim's 7.59/189. | He ran 6.67/224.70 at the Lebanon Valley Coke race.

Notes: Beautiful car. Despite stock stroke motor, set Top Speed everywhere it went. Photo from Gainesville, FL-1978. | After a great '77 season, the '78 season was very humbling to Dale Pulde and Mike Hamby. They purchased a new car just because of all the runs they put on their last one. The car came from Plueger and he had changed his chassis jig so that the engine sat higher and the frame was narrower. According to Pulde, “he never liked this car.” It was very hard on parts. Pulde had also purchased 200 sets of bad oil rings from a manufacturer that were killing the cylinder walls. Despite the setbacks, he did win his first NHRA National event this season. Their season started badly when they failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But things turned for the better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Dale ran 6.29/241.93 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. An opening round 6.35/224.43 beat Tom Hoover and in round two his 6.37/234.37 beat Tripp Shumake's 6.44. Another 6.37 at 236.84 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.54/212 in the semifinals. He faced Billy Meyer in the final and Dale picked up his first NHRA victory with a 6.42/234.37 over Meyer's 6.52/213. Hamby claimed that they "never had the valve covers off" after the win. It looked like it was the start of a great season when they went to Darlington the following week (March 19) for the IHRA Winternationals and won that too. The track was bad and Dale's 6.88/221.67 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. A 6.49/224 in the first round, beat Les Cassidy while a semifinal 6.44/228.42 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.97/208 in the "Trojan Horse.” He ran alternate Frank Oglesby in the final and won easily with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.35/229.00. The team then went to Seattle in April for its opening race of '78 and won that too. A final round 6.49 beat Tommy Ivo's 6.64. Pulde also set Top Speed at 231. The next day he won the Portland Opener. Once again, it was Pulde against Ivo and this time they both smoked the tires, but Pulde's 6.96 beat Ivo's 7.23. Earlier, Dale had set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.38/233. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Dale set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.35/233. A first-round 6.59/223 beat Murf McKinney and in round two, his 6.49 advanced when Jimmy King fouled. He soloed with a tire-smoking 11.27/79 in the semifinals when Dennis Lockaby failed to show. But in the final, Dale had problems and shut off against Denny Savage who went on to win with a 7.12/223. In May, the "War Eagle" was at Blaney for a four-car show. Dale ran 6.48 and 6.45/217.06 (Low ET and Top Speed) while beating Shirl Greer and Fullerton. He was declared the winner of the event. On May 21, the team was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. Pulde qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.32, but he was upset in the first round, when Savage's 6.26 beat his 6.35. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.29/232.56 qualified #11, but Dale fouled against Gary Burgin in the first round. The following week (June 18) found the team at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Dale qualified #7 with a 6.51, but picked up to a 6.33/231.95 in the first round, to beat Larry Gould's SOHC-Ford powered car. A solo 6.53 advanced in round two when Roger Lindamood broke on the line. But once again, it was Savage who stopped Pulde in the semifinals with a 6.11 to Dale's 6.32. Early in July, Pulde was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. Unfortunately, he was late off the line in the first round, and his 6.72 lost to Fullerton's 6.75. The team was down after not qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. That was followed up by a so-so performance at the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan. Dale’s 6.40 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but a first-round 6.69/200.04 lost to Lindamood's 6.64/213. Another surprise was the team's failure to qualify for the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. The team rebounded by winning the IHRA US Open at Rockingham on August 20. Dale set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.46 and then he beat Lindamood and Pete Miner (with a 6.48) to reach the final against Pete Williams in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Dale got out first in the final and his 6.52/235.60 (Top Speed) beat Williams' 6.51. | Best NHRA times of 6.198 at Indy and 241.93 at the Gators. Twice ran 6.29 as well. Did Dale go 6.15/247 somewhere this year?

Notes: Jody ran 5.86/256.84 to qualify #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He might have qualified higher, but he had a blower explosion on his last attempt. He lost to John Force in the opening round of eliminations. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.773/247.93 qualified #7. A off-pace 7.35/116.36 in the opening round lost to John Collins. The following week (March 24), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field but lost in round one. In April, he was one of twenty FC drivers attempting to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.99/246.44 qualified #13. In round one, he improved to 5.95/224.32 to beat John Force's 6.01/251. He got a little quicker in round two with a 5.92/241.41, but it wasn't enough to beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.80/249. Best NHRA national event times for 1985 were 5.773 at Gainesville and 256.84 at Pomona Winters. Did Jody run 5.68/258.62 away from the NHRA trail this year?

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Did Tim run 260 mph somewhere in 1987? Tim was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot for the sixteen-car field with a 5.77/240.19. In the first round, he advanced when his opponent, Doc Halladay, got out of shape and crossed the centerline. But in round two, Grose's Firebird broke and Graeme Cowin soloed into the semifinals.

Notes: Tommy Grove's "Going Thing" 1969 Ford Mach I Mustang was one of the best Ford-powered funny cars of all time. Grove was loyal to the 427 SOHC engine and Ford. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and Paul Shedlik built and painted the Mach I Mustang body. Larry Shinoda designed the paint scheme. Master tin man Al Bergler did the aluminum work. Grove debuted the car in late 1968 and raced it through 1970. Tommy ran 7.28 at 203 in 1969 to become one of the first 200 MPH funny cars. Grove achieved notoriety for cracking 200 mph while at the same time rumored to be experimenting with an exotic fuel (hydrazine?) | Grove had a bad year in '69. At least in comparison to '68 and '70. He had lots of transmission problems and was also trying to sort out the Boss 429 as well as running the proven SOHC. He failed to qualify at both the Irwindale New Year's Day Race and the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9 where an 8.08 was only good for the eighth alternate. He also failed to qualify at Bakersfield for the March Meet. Grove was the Killer Car on the match race trail in '68 and was feared by everyone who matched against him, but '69 was not the same. On March 30, he was at Aquasco for a best of three match against Lew Arrington. He won the first race with a shut off 8.61/168.22 when Lew got out of shape, but in the second race while coming to the line, it looked like a blower let go, but it was actually his motor self-destructing. Lew soloed in the "Brutus" to two more wins for the match race win. He ran Fred Goeske at Capitol on April 12 and lost two straight even though he set Top Speed at 195. He ran better at Aquasco on May 4 for their fourth annual Funny Car Invitational. A first-round 7.91/191.08 beat Tom McEwen's off pace 8.23 and another 7.91/191.88 in the semis advanced over Frank Oglesby in the Don Nicholson Cougar. In the final, Tom fouled against Jim Liberman's 7.86/189. On May 27, Aquasco held another eight-car Funny Car race. Grove's 8.10/188.66 in the first round, lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.83/197. After his loss, Tommy came back out later and made two runs, an 8.12/189.86 and an 8.09/191.88. Liberman met Grove at York US 30 on June 7 for another match race and JJ beat Grove three straight races. On June 21, Grove was at Lakeland for the Memphis Funny Car Championships. He fouled against Dick Harrell in the first round, and shut down to an 8.81/165. He had some more bad luck the next day at Kingston when he lost a best of three match to Paula Murphy. On July 3, Edgewater held an eight-car Funny Car show. Unfortunately, Charlie Allen strapped a 7.37 Low ET of the meet run on Tom in the first round, putting the Mustang on the trailer. He also lost in the first round, at Capitol's King of King's Funny Car event on July 16. This time, Oglesby's 7.98/178 beat Tom's ailing 8.71/187.88. He ran much better at the Cars Magazine Meet on July 20 where he set a 7.42 track record at 201 in the first round, while beating Al Graeber. In round two a 7.74/197.36 beat Ron Rivero's out-of-shape pass. But then the rain came and the rest of the race was to be run on Sunday. Grove had prior commitments and could not run Sunday. Liberman had a rematch with Grove at Capitol on September 20 and once again JJ prevailed although the times were close. Jim ran a best of 7.28/199.10 to Grove's 7.29/203. The following day (September 21) he ran at the third annual New England Funny Car Championships where he set a 7.30 Epping track record in the first round, while losing to Roger Lindamood's 7.33/198. Tom's speed was 199.50. An interesting thing happened to Grove on October 11 when he showed up to run at the OCIR Funny Car Invitational. He was informed that his competition license had expired back in Jan and he was unable to run. After straightening out the drivers license issue, he showed up at Irwindale on October 18 for the East/West Championships, but lost to Liberman's 7.76/195 in the first round, with an out-of-shape 8.23. All cars had run the first-round with the losers going into a bracket two while the winners ran bracket one. So Tom then met Rich Siroonian in bracket two, but his 8.02/184.80 lost to Rich's 7.53/199. He competed at Sears Point on November 2, but lost a blower early in the race. - Ron Howard

Notes: Russell "James" Liberman topped the 60sFunnyCars.com poll as the number one funny car racer of the 1960s. Not much more can be said about Russell Liberman, the man. Liberman ranked number 17 on the list of top NHRA drivers, had two NHRA national events victories (one of those as an owner), and an infamous legacy rivaling that of a rock star. Russell began his funny car career in such cars as the "Hercules," the "Gypsy" Corvette, and the "Brutus" GTO. Russell's stardom skyrocketed when he built the first "Jungle Jim" Chevy II. By 1969, "Jungle Jim's" long, smoking burnouts (some preceded by a fire burnout), high-speed backups, and long, twisting wheelstands had cemented his place as a popular racer with the fans. The showmanship had previously been backed up with average finishes, but these stopped in 1969. Russell had two Chevrolet-powered Novas in 1969 with Clare Sanders in the second car. The two started the year off with a bang with Sanders beating Jungle at Pomona for the Winternationals title. Liberman then went on the match race circuit to win countless races, running bests of 7.28/198.64. By the end of 1969, Jungle had one of the most successful years in history for a Chevy-powered funny car. Liberman knew that the day of the successful Chevy powered engine in AA/FC was limited. By the end of the next year, "Jungle" had switched to a Hemi. (Info from Dennis Doubleday). | JJ started his season by qualifying #13 at the Irwindale New Year's Day race and a first-round 7.67/191.08 beat Fred Goeske's 7.88/184. In the second round, his Nova came up ailing against Don Schumacher who unloaded a 7.52/198 to put Jim on the trailer. He faced off against Charlie Allen for a match race on January 12 at Irwindale and won his first race with an 8.12/191.08 over Allen's wheelstanding Dart. Allen came back with a 7.74/182 to win the second race over Jim who broke a rocker arm. JJ won the deciding match with an 8.23/190.26 when Charlie pulled another wheelie and lost. At the AHRA Winternats, Jim beat Tony Wahlay and Allen before meeting Clare Sanders in his second car in the semis. He beat a motor blowing Clare, but since they were taking turns driving each of the cars he let Sanders drive in the final. He qualified #7 with a 7.74/186.32 on February 9 at the second OCIR All-Pro race. It was an unusual event for Jim, and he ended up getting beat twice. In the first round, he lost to Danny Ongais' 7.60/160 in the first round, with a 7.69/191.88. But Ongais lost an engine in his Mickey Thompson owned Mustang and was unable to repair for the semifinals. This got JJ reinstated, and he faced Don Schumacher in the semis. He ran a good 7.74/192.30, but it wasn't good enough to get around Schumacher's 7.43/198. JJ raced at an eight-car show at Lions on February 22 and ran a first-round 7.72/184.42 over Steve Bovan. He lost to Rich Siroonian's 7.71 in the semis with a 7.82. Another match race was run this time against Sid Foster in the Super Cuda at Cecil County in March. JJ won the first race with a 7.83/171.11 beat Sid's 8.10/183 and Jim wrapped it up in the second race with a 7.60/187.10 to beat Foster's 8.07/169 and win the match. On April 6, he ran Schumacher at Connecticut and beat him three straight setting a 7.62 track record as well. He then took on Ron Rivero on April 13 at Atco where he won his first race with an out of shape 8.34/172.41. Ron won the second race with an 8.06/187 when JJ shut down early, and he went on to win the match with a 7.81/196 when Liberman crossed the centerline in the last race. He got back into his winning ways on April 19 at Blaney when he took on Schumacher. JJ won the first race, but Don won the second race with an 8.00/191 beating JJ's 8.07/182. Both were up for the final, but Jim had a good leave and won the match with an 8.00/182 that beat Schumacher who set 7.94/190 track records in losing. Another match race win came the next day on April 20 at Aquasco where he beat Dick Loehr two straight with a best of 7.89. He lost a match race on May 3 at York US 30 when Pat Foster beat him three straight. Jim got out of shape on his first race and lost to Pat's 8.11/175. In the second race, Jim fouled away a new track record 7.66 at 191.48 against the Mustang's 7.82/189.86. In the last race, Foster reset the track record with a 7.63/188.28 over Jim's 7.71. He traveled to Aquasco the next day (May 4) for an eight-car show, where a first-round 7.84/187.88 beat Malcolm Durham's 8.13/180. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 7.81/189.06 over Don Schumacher's 7.98/191. He faced Tommy Grove in the final, but Grove fouled and Jim ran 7.86/189.06 for the win. On May 14 he met Dick Loehr at Martin, Mich for a match race. Jim won his first race with a 7.80/188.28 when Loehr fouled (7.86/189.06). Dick came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 7.72 to JJ's best of 7.76/189.86. Way up north, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, he had a match race against Pat Minick. The Chi-Town Hustler was running strong beating Liberman in all three races with track records of 7.45/196. He went back to Aquasco for another eight-car show on May 27, and again he won, beating a fouling Durham in the final. Back at US 131 in Martin, Mich., on May 29, for a UDRA race. Dick Harrell ran a 7.84/192 to just nip JJ's 7.85/184.04 in the first round. Early in June, Larry Arnold in the Super Cuda met JJ at Suffolk for a best of three match. Jim ran 7.72/189.86 over Arnold's 8.16/179 in the first race, a 7.54/194.80 over Arnold's 7.66/190.26 in the second race and a 7.52/193.54 to make it three straight over Larry's 7.66/191. Another match race followed on June 7 at York US 30 against Grove's Mustang. Once again JJ won three straight with times of 7.61/191.70, 7.65 and a 7.70. The following day (June 8) he ran the New England Funny Car Championships at Epping. A first-round 7.69/187.90 beat Al Hanna and a 7.61/190.22 beat Chevy foe Bruce Larson in round two. In the semis, JJ needed only a 7.95 to beat Roger Lindamood's ailing Charger at 11.37. In the final a 7.73/189 beat Paul Stefansky's 8.18 for the win. At an eight-car show at New York, he set Low ET at 7.49/193.54 while beating Frank Oglesby, but while lining up for his semifinal race the Chevy lost oil pressure and Jim shut off. Aquasco held their President's Gold Cup Championships on June 22. JJ ran a first-round 7.86/183.66 over George Reese and then set a short-lived 7.74 track record at 190.66 over Lew Arrington in the semis. In the final, Schumacher reset the track record with a 7.68/195 run that beat JJ's 7.75/194.38. Another runner-up finish followed on July 3 at an eight-car show at Edgewater. This time, Pat Minick's 7.57/191 beat JJ's 7.66/187.88 in the final. The next day (July 4) he was in Suffolk for an eight-car show where a first-round 7.59/187.88 beat Ron Rivero. In the semis, Arrington's 7.55/193 beat his 7.62/191.08. At Suffolk on July 13, JJ ran a match against Mel Perry. Jim ran a 7.58/191.88 to beat Mel who had his roof blow off in the first round. Della Woods was the backup car, and she ran the next two races. Della's 7.92/181 lost to JJ's 7.55/193.12 in race two and a final identical time run by JJ beat Della's 7.98/180 in the third race. Jim set Low ET at 7.50/177.86 while beating Tom McEwen in the first round, at Capitol's King of Kings race on July 16. Roy Gay's 7.94/178 beat him in the second round when the Nova's front tires wouldn't stay on the ground, slowing him to an 8.24/192. On August 2, two of the top Chevys met at York US 30 for a match race. It was JJ against Larson and in the first race, a 7.56/191 by JJ beat Larson's 7.65/189. JJ made it two straight with another 7.56 that beat Larson, who got out of shape. On August 10 he raced at Atco for the New Jersey State Championships, but a broken rear stopped him in the first round. He then went to an eight-car show at Detroit Dragway. All cars there made three runs with the winner being the one with the most wins. Lindamood's 8.32/193 beat Jim's 8.57/186 in the first round, but JJ came back to win his next two races with a 7.75/187 over Connie Kalitta's 7.76/190 and an 8.00/169 over Arnie Beswick's 8.50/158. - Ron Howard

Notes: Hoover was still racing his Monza at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9, but his 7.23/202 in the first round, lost to low qualifier Tripp Shumake's 7.08/211. His Corvette debuted at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, a best of 6.43/218.97 (first alternate) failed to qualify. He made up for it by winning the Green Valley Raceway Opener. There he had run 6.25/225 to beat Billy Graham's quicker 6.21 in the opening round, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 6.11/232.77 that defeated Gordon Mineo's 6.45. Graham got back into the show on the "break rule," and Billy was Hoover's final round victim. Tom's 6.15/232.77 beat Graham who's Monza got out of shape. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11 with a 6.47/227. But in round one, he shut down with problems to an 11.29 against eventual winner Dale Pulde. The following weekend (March 19), he went to LaPlace for the NHRA Division Four opener. His 6.66/210.28 qualified #3. In the opening round, he beat Randy Lackey with a 6.72/206.42. A good light combined with a 6.80/205.47 beat low qualifier, Shumake's quicker 6.78/224. He then met up with Billy Meyer in the final. Meyer got the win, running 6.71/218 to beat Hoover's 6.81/204.08 runner-up effort. He was back at Green Valley on April 16 for the second NHRA Division Four race. A 6.29/223.32 qualified #3. Chip Woodall fouled against him in round one, and Tom advanced with a 6.40/214.79. But he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.97/91.00 in the semifinal that lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.26/215. On April 30, Hoover was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.50 and lasted until the semifinals before he smoked the tires and lost to Tom Anderson. He was at Tulsa the following week (May 7) for the AHRA Springnationals, where his 6.90/212.76 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. A 6.81/214.28 in round one, beat Lee Beard, but in the semifinals, he and Shumake and a close race with Tripp's 6.71/218 coming out on top over his 6.73/216.34. His next stop was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, where a 6.61/219.52 qualified #3. He beat Larry Gould's SOHC-powered Mustang in round one, with a 6.62/220.05 (Top Speed). He and Tom McEwen smoked the tires in the semifinals, with McEwen's 7.16 winning over his 7.25. The NHRA Springnationals did not go well for Hoover. Tom had just made a qualifying pass at 229 mph when his blower backfired. It caused the fuel tank to explode, and the car turned into a fireball as it continued down the track. The fire burned up all the oxygen, and Hoover felt that he would pass out. So at 40 mph, he bailed out the side window of the car. The car must not have been burnt bad as he returned to competition at Alamo Dragway the following week (June 18) for the AHRA Nationals. A 6.41/215 qualified #4, and in round one, his 6.48/205 beat Billy Graham. A 6.42 in the semifinals failed to beat McEwen's 6.36. His next stop was at Brainerd early in July for the US Funny Car Championships. On Saturday, he raced Don Prudhomme and his 6.52/220.58 lost to the "Snake's" 6.54/227. On Sunday, the eight cars raced for the win. Hoover's 6.41/214.83 defeated Lee Beard in the opening round, and a 6.35/229.00 beat Bob Pickett's 6.65/218 in the semifinal. Once again, he faced Prudhomme, but it was in the final for all the marbles this time. Tom led wire to wire with his 6.27/231.36 getting the victory over Don's 6.30/230 in a close race. At the Byron Funny Car Championships, he and Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" both ran 6.44 (Hoover at 230.17) in the opening round, but Colson got to the stripe first. He was at Kansas City for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. And while he didn't win, he did run a best of 6.37 and set Top Speed of the meet at 222.70. Englishtown was the next stop on the calendar for the NHRA Summernationals. Hoover's 6.21/234.98 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he fouled against John Lombardo in the first round. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnational Molson. This was only an eight-car show, and his 6.20/228.42 qualified #3. But once again, he fouled in the opening round. This time he ran 6.41/229.59 while his opponent, Tom McEwen, won with a 6.23/225. The following week (August 12), found the "Showtime" at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 21 cars ran the first-round, with only the eight lowest ET's advancing into the first-round of competition. Hoover's 6.28 got him the #7 spot for the show. In round one, he improved to 6.25/224.43 to beat Rick Johnson's 6.34/207 in the "Bear Town Shaker." In the semifinal, eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.10/210 put Hoover's 6.32/190.27 on the trailer. August 20 found Tom at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.37/222.76 qualified #3. An opening round 6.50/226 defeated Jim White's 6.72, and a 6.39/225.00 beat Billy Graham's 6.51/216 in the semifinal. He faced the "Blue Max" driven by Raymond Beadle in the final. In their race, Tom's 6.36/221.12 finished runner-up to the "Max's" 6.29/229.

Notes: Did not NHRA in 1978. Where did Roy run the 6.20/227. Was that 1978 or 1979? | Roy was at Englishtown on May 7 for the NHRA Division One opener. In the first round of eliminations, his 6.63/203.33 lost to Bruce Larson's 6.50/220. He was at Cayuga for the next Division One race on May 21, but in the first round, both he and his opponent, Ron Colson driving the Hawaiian" broke, and they were both out of further competition. In June, he was back at Englishtown for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. In his first race, Dodger Glenn's 6.63/209 beat his 6.69/207.81, and in his second race, he got out of shape and shut off to 9.63 in a loss to Tommy Ivo's 6.35.

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, Michigan, Popular Hot Rodding event in 1982. Kenny started the '82 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, his best of 6.20/236.22 failed to qualify, and he was third alternate for the show. He continued to have problems at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where he was second alternate with a 6.18/221.12 best. He qualified #5 with a 6.26 in the eight-car field at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but he failed to reach the finals. The next NHRA meet was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta that had an eight-car field. Kenny and crew chief Dale Armstrong had nothing, but problems and the best they could get the LN-7 to run was 12.19. Obviously, they failed to qualify. As bad as they were doing in NHRA events at the time, in IHRA, they scored a victory at the Pro-Am Championships on May 2. Kenny still didn't qualify so well, running a 6.21 for the final spot in the eight-car field, but he advanced past the first-round when Dale Pulde lost an engine on the line. In the semifinals, Bernstein picked up to a 6.06 to beat Al Segrini and move into the final where he faced John Pott in Larry Coogle's "Sting" car. Kenny repeated his qualifying time with a 6.21 to take the win. At the end of May, he showed at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show and once again he failed to qualify. He qualified for his first NHRA event of the year at the Springnationals in June. His 6.04/236.84 got the #5 spot in the sixteen-car field. He almost made it to the finals as well, by stopping Tom McEwen in round one, with a 6.24 and in round two, beating Don Prudhomme. But his 6.32/223.88 in the semifinals lost to Segrini's 6.27/236. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.98 in the eight-car show, but he lost in the first round, to Gary Burgin. On June 27, Bernstein was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. He beat Kosty Ivanof in the first round, with a 6.17/226.13, but in the semifinals, he got out of shape, hit the guardrail, and coasted across the center line. He was OK. Things started going a bit better for the team by July when they showed up at Sanair in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 6.01 qualified #1, and he ran 6.08 and 5.99 to reach the finals against Prudhomme. The "Snake" won with a 6.03/245 over Kenny's runner-up 6.13/233.16 effort. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 5.93 qualified #4, and he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Prudhomme again. The next race on the NHRA tour was the Mile High Nationals at Bandimere. The "Budweiser King" qualified #3 in the eight-car show and in round one, he beat Garth Widdison. In the semifinals, he was late off the line and Billy Meyer's 6.19/223 beat his quicker 6.17/233.76. Kenny set a track record at US 131, Martin, Michigan, when he qualified #1 with a 5.90 at 247.25 for the PHR Championships. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. Brainerd was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Northstar Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Segrini. Al won their race with a 5.97/238 over the "Budweiser King's" 6.25/196.30.

Notes: Won 1971 Gators in a dominant performance. Quickest and fastest funny car run in history at the time, but by the end of the year, Bill Leavitt lowered the mark to 6.48. | Goldstein was tough to beat driving the "Ramchargers" car in '71. He started the season at Lions on January 10 for the AHRA Grand American. He was the low qualifier of the "seeded" entries with a 7.16. In the first round, he improved to a 6.96/207.85 that beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's late 6.89/206. Another 7.16 at 201.79 advanced when Don Prudhomme broke a rear end. Unfortunately, Leroy broke in the semifinals against eventual winner Gene Snow. The team then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 7.22/205 qualified #11. Goldstein's 7.16/208.81 beat a Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max in the opening round.” In round two, he ran 7.14 to beat Mike Snively in Jim Annin's car. He improved to a 7.09 in the semifinals to trailer Jake Johnston driving Snow's second car. He went up against Butch Maas, driving the "Hawaiian" in the final, and despite running his best time of the weekend, a 7.08, he lost to Maas, who stepped up with a 6.93 for the victory. The AHRA Winternationals was held at Beeline Dragway in Arizona, and it featured a 32 car show. Goldstein was one of AHRA's seeded cars (guaranteed a spot in the show), and his 7.19 qualified #4 among that group. A 7.03 beat Ron Sutherland in the first round, but an off-pace 7.39/209.30 in round two lost to Gordon Mineo's 7.28/195. LaPlace held a four-car show before the Gatornationals, and Goldstein was declared the winner by winning all three of his races. He ran 7.09/192.71 to beat Chris Karamesines' new Mustang, a 7.07/189.47 beat Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster," and he was to race in the final. Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Minick blew his engine on the burnout, and Leroy made an easy pass for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Goldstein dominated the race. He qualified #1 with a 6.80/219.51 and then opened eliminations with a 6.71/220.58 (Low ET and Top Speed) to beat Larry Reyes. In round two, another strong 6.75/220.44 dropped Dick Rosberg's 6.96/190 in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro. He then ran 13.96/59.32 to win in the semifinals when Phil Castronovo had his throttle stick open and crashed into the guardrail. He went up against Rowe in the final. The "Super Duster” had broken in the semifinals and was unable to make the call. So, Leroy ran 9.28 to pick up the win. In April, he won over an eight-car field at Aquasco. There he ran 7.04/199.10 and 7.09 over Tom Sneden and Pete Hill to reach the final, where he faced Sneden again, who had gotten back into the show on the "break rule." Once again, Leroy beat the "Bob Banning" Challenger. The finals times were 7.06/176.12 to Tom's 7.40/183. The "Ramchargers" were at Edgewater for a best of three match against the track record holder, Pat Minick, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the first race, Leroy ran the track's first "six" while beating Minick. He reset his own record with a strong 6.79 to win two straight. Leroy made a third solo pass when Pat could not run after burning a couple of pistons in their second race. Another win came at Capitol Raceway on April 17. There he came away with a 6.81 track record, and in the final, he beat Tommy Grove's Ford-powered car. The following day (April 18), he was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. There he qualified #2 among the "seeded" cars with a 6.93/207.36. Goldstein got a solo in the first round, but he fouled away a 6.89 against Snow in round two. Goldstein was at US 131 in May for an eight-car show, and while he failed to reach the final, he did reset his own 7.03 track record with his 6.81/210 defeat of Tharp in the first round. Things didn't go so well at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Grand American. Leroy beat Ronnie Runyan's Chevy-powered car in the first round, with a 6.98/190.26, but the Challenger got out of shape in the second round while facing Cecil Lankford. Leroy corrected, and the rear end housing ripped free of the chassis. The body flew off, and the car skidded down the track on its chassis. Things weren't right with the car when it showed up at Baton Rouge for the AHRA Southern Nationals. The new rear end wasn't properly aligned, and the car was torn down and rebuilt in the pits. The work paid off with a first-round win over Paul Gordon driving the "Red Baron" with a 7.01/210.77, but in the second round, the car went up in tire smoke and lost to Cecil Lankford in the "Brand X" Mustang. It was then off to Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. Goldstein had won the race the previous year, but he lost to Rowe in the opening round this time. More bad luck hit the team at Martin, Michigan, on July 3 when they had an engine let go, and the car caught fire. The body started to break up, and the air got inside, lifting the entire car off the track for a short distance before the body broke free. Leroy still went through the lights with a 6.93/213! But the team was already mounting their third Challenger body since the start of the '71 season. The team wasn't down for long as on July 18, Goldstein set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.80/215.32 in qualifying #1 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A first-round 6.88/208 beat a fireballing Sam Miller, and in round two, he made an easy solo as the field was short. In the semifinals, Leroy’s 7.02/208 lost to his future employer Leonard Hughes' 6.89/211. Two days later (July 20), the team was at Lebanon Valley for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, Goldstein failed to reach the final. The last weekend of July meant just one thing, the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. Goldstein won all three of his races, but his times were not good enough to get him into the final round. He started with a 7.01/204.54 over Gary Bolger's 7.03/209 in the "Golddigger." A second-round 6.91/209.30 beat the only GM-powered car at the meet, Dean LaPole's "King Camaro," and a third-round 6.92/198.67 got around Tom McEwen, who broke. August started with a runner-up finish to Tom Hoover at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A week later (August 7), the team was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Thirteen cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car show. All ran the first-round, with the low eight ETs advancing into round two. Goldstein just made the show with his 7.29 getting him the #8 spot. It did him little good as the car came up ailing in the first round, and lost to "Flash Gordon" Mineo's 7.39. On August 15, Leroy was at York US 30 for the AHRA Nationals. He set the Top Speed of the meet on Saturday night during qualifying with a 6.87/220.58. On Sunday, he began eliminations by beating Johnny Roderiques. But in the second round, the team overpowered the track and smoked the tires, losing to Mart Higginbotham. He was back at Martin, Michigan, for a four-car show on August 22, but he and his opponent, Dale Pulde driving the M/T Pinto, probably made the track promotor cry on their first run. Both had their rear ends break free from the chassis. Then came the AHRA Grandnationals at Marion County, Ohio, on August 29. A 6.97/214 qualified #1, and Leroy lasted until round two before smoking the tires and losing to Lankford. If the team didn't already have enough bad luck, the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis had more in store. During qualifying, Leroy was making a run with Tom Prock driving Al Bergler's Vega. Prock lost a wheel, veered into Goldstein's lane, and clipped the right rear of the Challenger. The "Ramchargers" team thrashed all night to get the car ready for eliminations, as they had already qualified #8 in the show. All the hard work went for naught as in the opening round, Richard Tharp drove the "Blue Max" to a 6.72/216 to beat Goldstein's 6.93/214. After the Indy race, the team stopped at US 30, Gary, Indiana, for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. All cars were to run one race, with the lowest ET car being declared the winner. Goldstein smoked the tires to a 7.51/203 in a loss to Dick Harrell's 6.99/217. Dick would lose his life two days later in a racing accident in Toronto, Canada. We needless to say, Goldstein did not win that race. Before the month was out, Arnie Behling replaced Goldstein as the driver for this car.

Notes: The Paint only ran in 1976. Dale was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic in January. He lasted until the second round before losing to Gary Burgin. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.22/212.26 qualified #5. Unfortunately, he lost to Larry Arnold driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round. The team failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. On May 2, Dale's 6.59/205.47 qualified #2 at LaPlace Dragway for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He improved to 6.50 in the first round, to drop Gordon Mineo, and a 6.49 in the semifinals beat Johnny White. He was up against Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max" in the final. Beadle was on a tear during this time, and his 6.70/217 stopped Dale's 6.78/224.43 (Top Speed) for the money. Later in May, Emery qualified #1 at Tulsa for the AHRA Okie Nationals with a 6.66. The traction was not the best, as the second qualifier was over a tenth back at 6.78. Dale ran steady, and his times kept improving. In round two, a 6.65/208.80 beat Tom Hoover's 6.71/217, and a semifinal 6.58/211.76 beat Tom McEwen's tire-smoking Duster. He faced Gene Snow in the final, and a Low ET 6.57 at 217.38 got him the victory over Snow's 6.76/187 runner-up attempt. St. Louis was the next stop for the team for the AHRA Springnationals. Emery beat Steve Hodkinson in the first round, with a 6.44/212.27, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner Hoover. The following week (June 13), he was at the NHRA Springnationals, Dale qualified #6, but he was upset in the first round, when McEwen's 6.64/206 beat his 6.61/218.44. His best NHRA national event speed was 221.13 on a 6.506 qualifier at NHRA Columbus.
