Notes: Day ran IHRA PHR Martin MI 1986 | In 1986, Norm came out with a new Corvette FC. His first NHRA National event with it was at Brainerd. In round one he was racing Tim Grose when his engine exploded just past the finish line. It was one of the worst Funny Car fires of that year. The chutes burned off and Norm hit the ditch where the car flipped and he was trapped inside. The safety crew had to punch a hole in the side of the car to get him out. Fortunately, Norm escaped with minor burns, but the car was destroyed. I posted a clip of it from ND. He stopped the timers with a 6.06/238.72 on the unfortunate pass. In qualifying, his 6.37/229.59 was #15 for the show. |

Notes: In April, Kosty was at Epping, New England, for a best of three match race against Tom Prock, driving the "Custom Body" car. He won all three races with times of 6.39/218.44, 6.38/207.37, and 6.70/185.56, as Prock could do no better than 6.68 on this day. He was at Englishtown for its Spring Funny Car Bonanza race, but he blew his engine on an 8.50/119.36 run in the first round. He won the race as Al Bergler had broken on the line, but he could not show for his semifinal race against eventual winner Tommy Ivo. He raced at Maple Grove for the Duitch Classic but got out of shape in the first round and shut off against Pee Wee Wallace. Kosty won the Gold Cup Championships race held at Empire Dragway in August. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.74/191.90 beat Bruce Larson's 6.93/203. Another 6.74 at 195.22 in the semifinal defeated George Johnson's 6.82/204. He stepped it up in the final, setting Low ET at 6.54/191.08 while beating Dodger Glenn in the "Frantic Ford." |

Notes: AKA The Kansas Kid. Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The second was held on Saturday and Sunday, March 6/7. Prock won Saturday with a 5.974 at 233.76 mph over Custy. Dick was at Atco Dragway in May for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. In the first round, his 6.74/191.48 beat Fred Goeske's better 6.67/216. But the Coke races were run with all eight cars running the first round, with the four cars that ran the lowest ETs advancing into the final four. Both Goeske and Custy advanced, and they reran each other in the semi-final. This time, Fred's 6.58/222 got the better of Custy, who shut down at 8.16/128. Dick was at Englishtown on June 6 for another Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. He smoked the tires in his first-round race against Tripp Shumake. He later came back out to run a consolation race against Al Marshall. Dick ran 6.61, but Al's Mustang ran Low ET to win their match at 6.47. He also ran 6.52/164.83 at OCIR. | Saw this car at the 1976 SIR 64 Funny Car event, completed in the overcast daytime in a rush. It was my last chance to see some early 70s type FCs (Halibrands in front, 6/71s, steel motors). The CC Cavalcade ran their own bracket, Shumake over Custy. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Per Bill Duke, all Sharks were 392 powered. Confirmed 7.95 at Cecil County. | Frank Federici continued to use his '67 car throughout the '68 season. A December '69 Speed and Supercar magazine claimed that the car had run a best of 7.60/203.87. Frank ran at National Trail on June 23. He made two exhibition passes. The first was an 8.24/180.72 that tied the former track ET record and set a new track speed record. On his second pass, an 8.12/181.44 reset both ends of the track record. On July 27 he made it into the final on Saturday at the Cars All-Star International at Cecil County. He had beaten Malcolm Durham earlier with a 7.95/187.10, but in the final, an 8.25/181.08 lost to Dick Loehr's 7.86/182. He didn't do as well on Sunday and failed to make the final rounds. Frank faced off against Bill Lawton at a best two out of three match race at Connecticut on August 4. In the first race, a 7.68/171 by Lawton beat his 8.58/167.28 and in the second race, he lost again when he broke a rear end giving Bill the match race win. | We formerly listed 7.895/195. |

Notes: Dick Loehr was one of many funny car drivers based out of Michigan. An engineer by trade, Dick used his job connections to get sponsorship and assistance for his racing operations. In 1967, Loehr had a new Mustang funny car built. The Max Curtis Ford "Stampede" was much lower than most of its competition. That car debuted with a 427 SOHC engine, later replaced by a reliable 392 Chrysler Hemi, Torqueflite combination. Loehr ran a best of 7.86 at 189.70 with the car at Orange County. The car was replaced by a new, lighter Mustang in 1969. Dick Loehr eventually left funny cars for Pro Stockers. - BS | Dick started the season on New Year's Day at Irwindale, where an 8.40 qualified tenth in the sixteen-car field. He ran a first-round 8.18/180 but lost to Don Nicholson's 7.99/172. At OCIR on January 14 for an eight-car show, he qualified seventh with an 8.29/177.86, but Terry Hedrick's first-round 8.28/182 beat his 8.43/168.22. On January 28 at Lions for the AHRA Winter meet, he qualified third with a 7.79/178.92 and ran another 7.79/176.12 over Mike Burkhart in the first round. A second-round 7.92/179.78 beat Kelly Chadwick's 8.44/162. He had an easy third-round win before meeting Don Nicholson in the semifinal. Both cars lost transmissions, but Don coasted across the line first. Shortly after that (February 4), he went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. NHRA did not have a Funny Car class at this time, so the cars had to qualify for Super Eliminator. Unfortunately, Loehr failed to qualify. On February 25, Loehr singled in the opening round with an 8.98/141 when Jack Chrisman had injector problems at the South Coast Funny Car Championships. An 8.14/169.17 beat a tire-smoking Clare Sanders in the second round. In the semifinal, he broke on the line against Roger Lindamood. On March 3, Irwindale held a sixteen-car show, and Dick's 8.21/180.72 qualified seventh. He lost a blower belt and the race in the first round when Fred Goeske's 8.03/182.18 beat his 8.23/153.74. A big win came at Riverside on March 24 for the HRM Championships. On April 13, Loehr was at OCIR for an eighteen-car show. All cars were to run the first round, with the eight lowest ETs advancing into round two. Dick's 8.30/175.78 beat Joe Pisano and advanced into round two. His opponent, Steve Bovan, broke, so he soloed with a 10.62. He faced Goeske in the semifinals. An 8.04/182.54 finished second best to Fred's 7.93/179. Another win came at OCIR for their Funny Car Team Championships on May 4. He ran as good as a first-round 7.86/188.66 before winning the final when Charlie Allen broke a rear end. He failed to win on May 10 at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships, but he set Top Speed at 185.16. He was at Detroit Dragway on June 28 for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships, but an off-pace 9.90/132.35 lost to Pat Minick's 8.12/172 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Cecil County in July for the CARS All-Star International meet, Dick ran a first-round 7.79/179.28 over Dick Bourgeois' 8.38 and went on to win the final Saturday with a 7.86/182.54 over Frank Federici's 8.25/181. He was at an eight-car show in Gary, Indiana, on July 30. He ran 7.80/188 (Top Speed) in the opening round of eliminations to beat Pat Minick's 7.99/182 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, his 7.77/185.71 beat Ed Schartman's 7.92/160. He faced Don Schumacher in the final, and another strong 7.76/175.47 gave Dick the title over Don's 7.97/183. On September 1 at Minnesota Dragways for an eight-car event, Dick lost to Tommy Grove in the first round, Tom's 7.62/191.88 over Dick's (8.02/175.43). Another win came on October 5 at the Irwindale Grand Prix. On November 16, Irwindale held a Ford vs. Mopar Championships, and Loehr's first-round 8.08/177.86 beat Larry Reyes' 8.10/181.08. A second-round 7.87/188.67 beat Fred Goeske's 7.99/182.18. He lost his third race to Dave Beebe's 8.36/185.33 when he got up on two wheels and shut down to a 13.47. He won two of his races at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on December 1, running a best of 7.95/179.28 over Goeske. |

Notes: "All American Boy" Charlie Allen's best remembered funny car was this 1968 Dodge Dart. This was his first flip-top funny car, replacing his A/FX Dart. The new machine marked his first flip-top, one-piece unit. It was a test in part for Crower products. The car ran OK, registering high 7s. Allen built the car with a Contemporary Fiberglass body with Kenny Ellis tin. Charlie raced the car under the blue & silver Atlantic Dodge and Crenshaw Dodge banners in 1968. Allen collected a $2000 win at Irwindale at the 16-car experimental Stock Invitationals. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from James Ibusuki). | Charlie was driving the "Crenshaw" backed Dart at OCIR on July 20. All eight cars ran the first two rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Allen made sure he got into the final by setting Low ET in the first round, with a 7.60/184.80 that beat Dale Williams in Jess Tyree's Firebird. In his second race, he ran 8.04/188.28 to beat Dee Keaton's 8.34/177.51. In the final, he met up with Ray Alley. The two had a good race going until Allen's transmission failed to shift, and he shut off to 8.83/113.20 while Alley got the win with a strong 7.88/190. In Mid-August, he was at Mission Raceway in BC, where he set the track record down to 7.60. On a backup run, he ran 7.75. He set a 7.68 Irwindale track record in October. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed this car at 7.95. We need to confirm it was this one and not the new red Dart that went the 7.68. - BP |

Notes: Allen debuted his new Dodge Dart funny car sponsored by Crenshaw Dodge at Irwindale on Jan. 28. That began a season filled with match races against other "experimental stock" racers such as Fred Goeske, Gas Ronda, John Mazmanian, Kip Brundage, and Cecil Yother. He took funny car eliminator wins at OCIR and Irwindale. He also won the funny car eliminator title at what was billed as the North American Fuel and Gas Championships at Puyallup Dragway in Washington on June 15 against a 16-car field. Notes: Worsham qualified #14 at Columbus with a 5.37/275.56. In the opening round, his 5.42/226.98 fell to Cruz Pedregon's 5.28/276. Shortly after that (June 27), he was at Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals. Unfortunately, he ended up as the second alternate with a 5.69/250.55 best. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals or any other NHRA events until the U.S. Nationals at Indy. There, his 5.288/285.89 qualified #12. He cut a good light in the first round that saw his 5.367/284.36 defeat Gordon Mineo's 5.33/276. Worsham improved to 5.257/287.63 in round two, but it wasn't enough to beat Al Hofmann's 5.17/286. Del's best numbers were 5.179/292.96 on race day at Ennis. He practically lived in the 5-teens and low 5.20s and ran near or over 290 mph everywhere. Notes: Photo from Indy 1989. | Richard qualified #15 at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 6.08/246.84. He lost to John Force in the first round. He then went to Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals where his 5.69/263.85 qualified on the "bump.” In the opening round, he smoked the tires and shut down to 17.74 while opponent Art Hendey advanced with a 5.53/270. NHRA's next stop was at Seattle International for the Seafair Nationals. Hartman ran a career-best (to this point) 5.55/266.74 to qualify #14. In the first round, he lost to Force. Richard did not go to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. There, he improved to 5.51 during early qualifying. Later that was bettered by a 5.39/276.58 which was run on only his ninth pass since switching to fuel. But after that, run, the team switched from a two-speed transmission to a three-speed. They also changed the rear end from a 3.20 to a 2.90. After the changes, Hartman made another qualifying pass and ran 5.42. His 5.39 got him the #9 spot in the show, forcing him to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the first round. The "Snake" run 5.26/273 to trailer Hartman's off-pace 6.05/178.50. |

Notes: Jim was in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Adolph's 7.32 qualified #13, and he beat Ed McCulloch in the first round before losing in a tire-smoking battle with Billy Meyer that saw Meyer's 6.56 beat his 6.82. He also competed at Irwindale's last drag race. It was a 32 car field, and in the opening round, his 7.29 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.33. He ran 6.205/231.36 at Ontario for his best NHRA national event times. He made it to the semis there before losing to Don Prudhomme. |

Notes: Jake qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 6.364/223. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round, 6.296/201.76 to 8.978/80.93. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Johnston qualified #2 with a 6.20 and lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against Pulde. He then went to OCIR for a sixteen-car show. While he didn't reach the final, he did run a best of 6.27. On March 27, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven opener. He ran well there, lasting until the semifinal before the eventual winner Don Prudhomme, beat him. He also competed at Irwindale's 64-car show on April 9, but he failed in his attempt to reach the final. Jake was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Rain postponed the race until June 4, and Johnston's 6.430/224.43 (Top Speed) qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind John Lombardo's 6.42. He beat Eddie Pauling in the opening round with a 6.61/172.41 to a 6.91/145.65. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires, and his 6.97/151.51 lost to eventual winner Johnny White's 6.43/213.77. Joe Pisano did not run any additional NHRA events this year. Formerly listed 233.00 mph. We need confirmation of that (Bakersfield?) |

Notes: The T-Bird debuted at the Grandnationals in Sanair at the end of June. Only fifteen cars showed, and Ron's 5.82/252.38 qualified #7. In the opening round, he had problems and shut off against Mark Oswald. The following week, he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The car was still unlettered and wearing black primer. He qualified #14 and ran an easy 5.97/249.30 in the first round to advance when Kenny Bernstein could not show due to a fire he had in qualifying. In the second round, Ron lost to Tom McEwen. At the NHRA Summernationals, Correnti qualified #13 with a 5.81. He had problems in the first round against Dale Pulde and shut off. His next stop was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Ron qualified #13 with a 6.13/241.93 in the thin air. In the first round, he lost to Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." This car's career ended at Edgewater during the IHRA Summernationals in August. It caught fire during qualifying, and the T-Bird body was destroyed. Ron was not hurt. IHRA number was 154. We formerly listed 5.71 for this car, but 5.779/253.52 were his best NHRA national event times at the World Finals. We are removing the 5.71 until we get confirmation. |

Notes: Rick Howard photo of Funny Car Final Round at the 1997 NHRA Pontiac excitement Nats, Columbus. Qualified on the bump (16th) with a 5.56- 249.65. Upset pole-sitter Randy Anderson, Cruz Pedregon (with an improved 5.47), Del Worsham (no-show for semis), and finally Whit Bazemore with a better yet 5.34 at 270.35 to cap off a "storybook" race. Coming off open-heart surgery just two months before Columbus and returning to competition just two weeks before this event. It was his 5th overall NHRA Funny Car title and first since Sonoma 1993. |

Notes: Bill was in New England in June for its Spring Funny Car Nationals. The race had been delayed one week due to rain. It was an eight-car field, and Leavitt's 6.75/183 qualified #1. But that was as "slow" as he ran at this race as he kept getting quicker. In the opening round, his 6.46/205.47 defeated Joe Jacono's 7.10/172. In the semifinals, Jimmy King's 7.10/197 fell to his 6.45/205.94. Jacono had gotten back into the show on the "break rule" for the "Frantic Ford." It was Joe that Bill ran in the final. Bill was not to be stopped on this day as he set a 6.28 track record (at 212.26) in the final to beat Jacono's 6.77/182. Shortly after this, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.63 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. His first-round opponent, Charles Lee, was shut off on the line for leaking oil. Bill ran a solo 8.13 to advance. In the second round, his 6.50/208.81 beat Tommy Grove's 6.57/214. He lost to Al Segrini's 6.38/227 in the semifinal. Bill ran 6.40 at PRO Long Island NY 8/18/74. He also won the Epping NE Funny Car Nats with a final round 6.54/192.30 and a best of 6.47. |

Notes: AKA California Chargers. In May, Jake qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field at Pomona for the NHRA Division Seven opener. He ran 6.92 for the spot. In the opening round, Danny Ongais had trouble against him and slowed to 7.97 while Johnston advanced with a 6.97. He improved to 6.88 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough to beat Gary Burgin's 6.75. Jake did not drive the funny car on the NHRA national event trail. |

Notes: After building a new "first of its kind" funny car, it was named NHRA New England Division's most beautiful car. The new car had consistent times in the 6.1's and a best of 6.06. Al failed to qualify at the Gatornationals. He also attempted to qualify at the NHRA Summernationals, but a best of 6.40/229 was good for the fourth alternate. He was in Canada on August 9 for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5 with a 6.42/225.56. In the first round, he ran low qualifier Tim Grose and Hanna's 6.47 lost to Grose's 6.18. He was in New England on August 17 for the NHRA Division 1 final. Al qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.13/229.59, and in the first round, his 6.17/227.84 beat Al Segrini's 6.24/229. He lost to eventual winner Gary Burgin in the semifinals when he got out of shape and crossed the centerline. He was back in New England in October for its FC Nationals. Al's 6.38/228.42 in the opening round beat Al Hofmann. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1982. |

Notes: Frank attempted to qualify at NHRA Gainesville but was the final DNQ (times unavailable). In April, he also failed to qualify at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He was at Englishtown on May 4 for the NHRA Division One opener. His 6.31/222.22 qualified #3 for the eight-car field, but he broke against Bruce Larson in the opening round. Frank was a DNQ at the PHR event in 1980 at 11.44 seconds. Frank used comp number 109 while in the Mello Yello car. His normal comp number was 232. 109 could have been an IHRA number? |

Notes: At the HRM Championships, Johnny qualified tenth with an 8.04. In the first round, he lost to Pat Foster in the M/T Mustang. He was at Lions for an eight-car show on April 19. Wright was still not qualified, and time was running out, so on his last pass, he moved to the top of the list with a 7.29/203.67. There were many doubters about the run, and Johnny assured them he would back it up. In the first round, he lost a piston but still won when Steve Bovan's Camaro caught fire. Unfortunately, the team was unable to repair it for the semifinals. At the second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open on May 3 at OCIR, he again tried to run a big number, but his best of 8.11/193.96 failed to qualify for the GM team. On May 10, for an eight-car race at Lions, he qualified second with a 7.86 but lost to Gordon Mineo's 7.94 in the first round. Another eight-car show was run on May 17 at Irwindale, and Wright ran a first-round 7.75/193.12 over Ron Leslie (7.87/187.88), but the Corvette came up ailing in the semifinal, and Rich Siroonian (7.70/195.22) beat him. At Irwindale for an eight-car show on May 30, Johnny won his first-round race over Leroy Hale's Firebird, but he hurt some parts and couldn't run in the semis. The next (May 31) at OCIR for the Funny Car 500, he qualified third in the sixteen-car field with a 7.57/178.92. A first-round 7.58/196.93 beat Gordon Mineo (8.01/179.28) but got out-of-shape in the second round, ran an 8.62/171.75, and lost. A win came on June 8 at Seattle for the Travelon Fuel Championships, where a final round 7.92/184 beat Mike Miller's 8.04. He won again on June 14 at OCIR for the Benefit Race. He qualified fourth and ran 8.04/172.08 and 7.94/185.56 to make the final against Gary Gabelich in an all-Corvette final. Gary's 7.85/190.67 lost to Wright's holeshot 8.01/188.28. On July 5 at OCIR for the Nitro Championships, he qualified dead last in the sixteen-car field and lost to Frank Pisano's 7.76/196.93 in the first round, with a 7.97/169.17. At Irwindale for an eight-car show on July 26, the New Breed's 7.87/185.64 beat his off-pace 8.20/169.21. He fouled away an 8.00/178.21 in the first round against Bob Smith (8.12/136.57) on August 9 at OCIR's Anniversary Race. He fouled again on August 16 at a sixteen-car race at Irwindale. This time, the red-light came in the second round against Gas Ronda (7.61/195.64). He had run a strong 7.75/184.04 in the first round. On August 30, he was at Lions for the Drag News Nationals. He cashed in there by beating Rusty Delling in the first round with a 7.78/192.30, then a 7.74/193.54 beat Gordon Mineo's quicker 7.72/186. In the semifinal, he beat Jim Adolph. In the final, he met Leroy Hales and beat him with an 8.28/162.16 to Leroy's 8.50/144. Another win came his way on September 1 at an eight-car show at Irwindale. He beat Rusty Delling's Javelin (7.84/186.36) in the first round, with a 7.81 and a semifinal 7.94/187.10 advanced when Gene Conway broke a rear end. It was an all-Corvette final when he met Mike Van Sant, but his 7.61/191.08 beat Sant's crossed-up 8.45/145. The Hellfire ran well on September 13 at Lions for an eight-car show. A first-round 7.32/199.11 beat Jess Tyree (7.69/190.27), and a semifinal 7.33/191.48 beat Frank Pisano's ailing run (9.64/95.03). But he had to settle for runner-up money when Gordon Mineo's 7.61/192.71 beat Wright's 7.74/196.50. He qualified second with a 7.78 at an eight-car show at Irwindale on September 21 but lost to Marv Eldridge's 7.79/187.50 in the first round with a 7.82/187.88. Another eight-car show on October 4 at Lions had Wright run a first-round 7.41/189.57 over Jess Tyree (7.91/182.92), but Ed Carter's 7.58/191.08 in the semifinal beat his 7.82/183.29. Irwindale held its East/West Championships on October 18, and Pat Minick (7.49/200.88) beat Johnny in the first round. All first-round losers raced in a second bracket, and Wright ran a 7.52/175.78 to get into the semifinals of bracket two. There, he broke against Gas Ronda. He raced at the Lions East/West Championships on October 25 and beat Paula Murphy (8.20/191.89) in the first round with a 7.33/198.23, but he failed to make the finals. In December, he showed up at Irwindale driving for Mickey Thompson. - Ron Howard | A 3/70 Rodder & Super Stock credits the car with 204.44 in 1969. - Dennis Doubleday |

Notes: Hedrick drove Pete Seaton's Super Shaker Corvair in '67 and '68. In 1969, they built this new Chevy Nova with a Logghe chassis featuring independent front suspension. Early in the year, Terry bought out Pete and renamed the car Terry Hedrick's Super Shaker. Same orange, black and white paint scheme. No. 1 qualifier (7.30) at '69 Manufacturers Meet at OCIR. On April 5, at Orlando for the East Coast Funny Car Championships, Hedrick ran a best of 8.02/185.56 on the way to winning the event over Norm Weekly in the Mr. Norm Charger. He met Pat Minick at Connecticut for a best of three match race on May 4 and prevailed. Both cars ran 7.80 in the first race, with Terry winning with a speed of 188.66 to Pat's faster 189. In the second race, Hedrick got out of shape, and Minick's 7.71/190 won. In the do-or-die final race, Terry's 7.64/193.96 beat the Chi-Town-Hustler's 7.79/191. He didn't win the New York Spring Championships on May 18, but he did get Top Speed at 197.80. He also won his first-round race with a 7.50, but he failed to make the finals. On May 29, he competed in a UDRA Funny Car race at US 131, Martin, Mich. A first-round 7.63/191.88 beat Roger Lindamood's 7.89/189. He set Top Speed with a 7.67/196.50 over Gary Dyer in the Mr. Norm Car in the semifinal. But in the final, a 7.83/191.08 was no match for Dick Harrell's strong 7.52/195.22. He won a four-car match race at Minnesota on June 1. The winner was decided on whoever won the most rounds. Terry won all three of his races and set Low ET at 7.56. His best speed at the event was 192.70. He met Bill Lawton in Connecticut on June 22 for a match race. Lawton proved he was hard to beat on his home track, winning the first race with a 7.75/188.66 over Terry's close 7.81/189.46. Lawton had transmission trouble in the second race and shut off on the line, giving Hedrick a 7.76/191.48 solo for the win. Lawton came back with a 7.57/187 to win the match over Terry's out-of-shape 9.23 pass in the final race. On July 13, in Lebanon, he met Al Hanna for a match race. In the first round, Hedrick set a 7.31 track record at 200.00 over Al Hanna's 7.95/176. Al won the second race when Terry fell off to a 9.69/172, but in the third race, he reset the track record to a 7.29 again at 200.00 to Hanna's 7.62/191. He lost in the second round to Don Schumacher at the AHRA Nationals at New York National on August 17. Late in August, Detroit Dragway held an eight-car show where all cars ran three rounds, and the winner was decided by who won the most rounds. Hedrick won his first race with a holeshot, beating Lawton's 8.28/154 with an 8.38/191.44. He lost to Arnie Beswick's 8.19/183 in the second race with an 8.32/186.40. In his last race, he picked it up to a 7.44/195 to beat Beswick's 8.00/182. Another eight-car show was held in Martin, Mich. US 131 on August 30. Terry ran a first-round 7.42/197.80 over Bryan Teal's 8.12/138. But unfortunately, he fouled and was out. |

Notes: "All American Boy" Charlie Allen's best remembered funny car was this 1968 Dodge Dart. This was his first flip-top funny car, replacing his A/FX Dart. The new machine marked his first flip-top, one-piece unit. It was a test in part for Crower products. Allen built the car with a Contemporary Fiberglass body with Kenny Ellis tin. In 1969, Saddleback Dodge was the new sponsor, and Charlie repainted the car the more familiar red and silver. Charlie Allen and crew member Jeff Crowther ran a best of 7.29 at 199.96 in 1969. Keith Black 426 Hemi, B&M Torqueflite 3 spd. Auto. (Photo courtesy Bob Plumer and Drag Race Memories. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from James Ibusuki and Bill McLauchlan). | The 199.96 was run at Irwindale VERY early in 1969, and it never matched that speed the rest of its career. If that's a typo, this Dart did run 197.11 at Indy in 1969. February 1970 Speed & Super Cars magazine says this car ran 7.20s in Connecticut. I don't recall that. - Dennis Doubleday | Charlie started the '69 season with a big win at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. A 7.79 qualified sixth in the sixteen-car field. A 7.72 beat Clare Sanders in Jim Liberman's second car at 7.90, and in round two, he singled with a 7.61/193.96 when Norm Weekly failed to fire. He ran his best ever in the semifinal, a 7.56 (up to this time) at 199.96 over Ray Alley. In the final against Don Schumacher, he ran another 7.56 over Schumacher, who lost a transmission. On January 12, he ran a match race against Jim Liberman at Irwindale. Jim won the first race with an 8.12/191 that beat the wheelstanding Dart. In the second race, Allen's 7.74/182.54 beat Jim who broke a rocker arm and shut off. In the final race, another wheelstand gave the match to Liberman, who won with an 8.23/190. It was surprising that he failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #1 with a 7.46/191.88 at the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9. Unfortunately, he failed to make it to the finals. He lasted until the semifinals on February 16 at Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. He broke against Pat Foster at that race. The roles were reversed to the HRM Championships on March 16, when Foster broke a driveshaft in the final, and Allen motored to a 7.59/194.38 victory. He didn't back into this win as he qualified third with a 7.71 behind the two Mickey Thompson cars. A 7.67/193.96 advanced past the final round when Ronnie Runyan fouled. He singled in the second round with a 7.69/193.54 when Marv Eldridge failed to show. In the semis, a 7.71/190.67 beat Rusty Delling's 8.05. Another big win came on March 29 at the final OCIR All-Pro race. There he ran 7.45/194.38 over a fouling Ray Alley, and a semifinal 7.62/191.88 beat Rich Siroonian's 7.68/192. In the final, he again took on an M/T car; this time, it was Danny Ongais. A blown transmission ended the Mustang's chances, and Allen had another win. He took on Bill Lawton at Bill's home track, Connecticut, for a best-of-three-match race. Charlie won three straight and lowered the track record on every run. In the first race, a 7.61/193.54 beat Lawton's 7.90/175. He soloed with a 7.53/193.12 in the second race when Lawton had fuel pump problems. And a final run of 7.45/196.50 reset both ends of the track record. He set another track record while beating Tom McEwen at a match race at Suffolk on May 11, where a 7.29 was the new record. At Maple Grove, he beat Jim Liberman in another match race, where he set a 7.60 track record. He went back to Connecticut on May 25 for a match race against Lew Arrington. In the first race, a 7.67/184.80 beat Lew's 8.19/182. In the second race, a 7.99/188 by Brutus beat Allen's 8.30/164.86. Both were loaded for bear in the final, but a 7.73/188.88 by Allen beat Lew's 8.30/187 for the match win. He competed at the Connecticut Memorial Day Championships, and a first-round 7.99/150.75 beat an out-of-shape Joe Black. Lawton got some revenge in the semifinals by taking a 7.56/194 win over Allen's 7.60/191.05. He had some problems at the NHRA Springnationals when the NHRA didn't receive his entry in time. However, luck was on his side when Doug Thorley, whose AMX had crashed three weeks before, gave Charlie his entry form. Thus, the car was qualified as an AMX in the entry blank. A 7.92/181.81 qualified eighth. As it was, he had trouble and withdrew from the competition. On June 28, he raced Bruce Larson at Budds Creek for a match race and lost two straight. On July 3, Allen was at Edgewater for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 7.37 that beat Tommy Grove. In the semifinals, while doing his burnout before racing "Jungle Jim," his motor let go, and Liberman soloed into the final. The following day he was at Suffolk for another eight-car show. He fouled in the first round, against Al Graeber, running an 8.93/190 on the loss. On July 12, he faced off against Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" at US 131. Charlie won two straight, taking the first race with a 7.68/185.56 to Reyes' 7.78/182, and in the second race, the "Hawaiian" was shut off on the line with an oil leak, and Allen just eased it through with an 8.49 to win the match. He got a rematch against Larson at Numidia Dragway, and this time he beat Larson's "US A-1" two straight. He set a 7.57 track record in the first race over Bruce's 7.66, and in the second race, he won, but no time was recorded. He competed at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, on August 2. In the first round, he blew a transmission, but his 9.45 still beat Don Biggers' 10.16. He lost to Randy Walls in round two. Allen was back in Connecticut on August 17 for a best-of-three-match race against Lawton. The two made three runs, and Allen won them all, clocking 8.47/181.80, 7.54/173.74, and 7.74/163.93. Bill's best was 7.70. A week later (August 24), he faced Ron Rivero in the "K&G" Mustang at the same track. Ron won the first race when Allen broke a radius rod, but after fixing it, he came back to win the next two races and the match. His times were 7.73/168.53 and 7.84/155.17. Notes: The "Hawaiian" team started their '84 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. The car was using a Ford EXP body after the Charger exploded at the '83 NHRA World Finals. This was the first and only time the "Hawaiian" was Ford bodied. He qualified with a 6.19, but he lost to John Force in the opening round. The car was still wearing the Ford body at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Dunn qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.35. He improved to 6.28/230 in the first round, to beat Tom McEwen's 6.52/214. In the semifinals, he lost to Henry Harrison. By Pomona, car owner Roland Leong had enough time to put a Mopar body back on the car. Dunn qualified #14 for the NHRA Winternationals at 5.989/242.58, but he went out early, losing to Mark Oswald driving the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round, of eliminations, 5.93/251 to 6.09/239. The car didn't respond too well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Mike's 6.183/230.17 best failed to qualify. Things weren't much better at Atlanta, but at least he qualified on the "bump" for the NHRA Southern Nationals sixteen-car show with a 6.051/243.24. He lost to Al Segrini in the opening round, 5.90/240 to a 10-second shut-off. The big Bakersfield Meet was held in May, and the "Hawaiian" always made a showing there. Only ten cars showed for the eight-car field, so qualifying was relativity easy. Mike's 5.93 qualified #4, but in the first round, he hurt some parts while beating Denny Savage. He was unable to return for the semifinals. Getting past that first-round was becoming quite the chore, and it continued at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May. The team qualified #5 at 5.954/249.30, but Dunn's 6.08/249 in the first round, lost to Tim Grose's 6.00/239. That was still better than their performance at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a stuck throttle sent the car off the end of the track on a 6.102/236.84 qualifying attempt. The Daytona body was destroyed. By July 1, a new body was on, and the team was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Mike ran a great 5.859/250.00 to qualify #4. He also got to go a few rounds, running 5.90s at 240 plus, finally losing to the eventual winner Billy Meyer, in the semifinal when they broke. The following week(July 8) saw them go one round farther at the AHRA Grand American race at Gary, Indiana's US 30. A final round 5.94/252 gave Dunn the runner-up spot to Frank Hawley's 5.85/250 in the "Chi-Town Hustler."At the NHRA Summernationals, Mike qualified #8 with a 5.833/252.10. He beat Segrini in the opening round (5.884/250.69 to 5.99/246), but his off-pace 6.15/218 in round two lost to Meyer's 5.88. A 6.05/241 qualified #11 at Denver, but Mike lost round one to Don Prudhomme, 5.99/234 to 6.07/243. That was Mike Dunn's last NHRA national event for 1984. By Brainerd, Mike had been injured and couldn't drive. Rick Johnson took over driving the Hawaiian. |
