Notes: Glenn qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.33. He made his way into the final by having a first-round tire smoking battle with Wyatt Radke that he won with a 7.89/220.53 to Wyatt's 8.07/106. In the second round, another 5.33 at 279.24 beat Richard Hartman's 5.50/272 and in the semifinals, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.289/284.00 that beat Mike Dunn's 5.39/266. In the finals he ran John Force and Glenn had problems and slowed to a 5.87/182.70 that finished runner-up to Force's 5.31/239. Glenn lost to Mike Dunn in the second round at the NHRA Arizona Nationals where his 5.35/280 lost to Mike's 5.36/274. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, a 5.30 qualified #5, but he again lost in round two. This time his 5.35/285.26 lost to Force's 5.27/275. Earlier, Mikres had set Top Speed of the meet at 286.25. The team didn't qualify as well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals only getting the #12 spot in the field, but Glenn beat Jerry Caminito's 5.85/197 in the first round, with a 5.42/261.62. A second round 5.49/266.82 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.34/264. Best NHRA times were the 5.289/286.25.

Notes: Teamed with Joe Amato. Photo from Columbus 1987. Bruce had been running his Corvette for the early part of the season until he debuted his Beretta at the NHRA Springnationals in June. It did well during qualifying, running 5.74/249.93 for the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he lost to Jim Head in the first round. The following week, he took it to Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. A 6.16/166.66 qualified #5 in the eight-car field setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein. Larson improved to 5.85/232.55 in their race, but Kenny's 5.71/244 got the win. Bruce went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Qualifying was easy as only 15 cars showed. Still, Larson laid down a 5.88/244.83 to qualify #7. He had a close first-round race against Tom McEwen that saw his 5.93/247.72 lose to McEwen's 5.91/240. Closer to home, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.75/248.55 qualified #10, but a 5.87/251.81 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.64/251 in the "Candies and Hughes" car in round one. He followed the NHRA tour to Denver for the Mile High Nationals where he qualified #6 with a 5.85/244.56. But in the opening round, he smoked the tires and lost to Steve Hodkinson. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, a 5.75/251.18 qualified #12, but again he lost in round one. This time Don Prudhomme's 5.73/253 beat his off-pace 6.08/234.92. Bruce was one of eight-cars that had run well enough to qualify for the "Big Bud Shootout" held in conjunction with the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. But his first-round bad luck persisted when he smoked the tires and shut of to 6.95/135.29 in a loss to Billy Meyer's 5.71/259. For the US Nationals the next day, 21 cars attempted to qualify for the show. Larson qualified #9 with a 5.72. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bernstein where once again Bruce went into tire smoke, and he lost to eventual winner Bernstein. | 261.02 was at the 1987 NHRA Motorcraft Gatornationals Gainesville with the Corvette. He ran 256.33 at Phoenix for the NHRA Castrol GTX Fallnationals on 10/18/87. Just looking for the Fastest Speed recorded in 1987 for Bruce with this Beretta. - Rob McCabe

Notes: Qualified number 3 at Indy '72 with a 6.529 and finished runner-up to Ed McCulloch. Ran 6.769 at NHRA Amarillo 72. | Bonin debuted the "Pacemaker" Vega in April at the Seattle season opener. He qualified for the eight-car field and, in round one, beat Rich Rogers. Unfortunately, he lost in the semifinal. He did better at the Northwest National Open, also held in Seattle. It was another eight-car show, and Bonin ran 6.92/185.56 to advance over a broken Kenny Martin in the opening round. In the semifinals, his 6.89/207.36 beat Twig Zeigler's quicker 6.85/213. This put him into the final against Kenney Goodell. Gordie tried hard, but his 6.91/206.42 finished runner-up to Goodell's 6.68/207. Gordie qualified #9 for the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 (times unknown but between 6.63 and 6.68). He lost a 7.10 to 7.10 decision to first alternate Omer Carruthers in round one.

Notes: Gary went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the show with a 5.55/272.47. He lost to Cruz Pedregon in the opening round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.55/221.23 was the second alternate. But he got into the field when #7 qualifier Paul Smith could not race. The first two alternates were not ready, so Densham got in. Unfortunately, he lost to Chuck Beal. Only sixteen cars showed up to qualify at Gainesville, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Gary ran 5.25/284.36 to take the #14 spot. But in the opening round of eliminations, his 5.21/290.32 lost to Chuck Etchell's 5.18/294. He really stepped up at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, where his career-best 5.13/293.63 qualified #4. He beat Dean Skuza in round one, with a 5.20/290.88 but his off-pace 5.38/244.43 in round two lost to Tony Pedregon's 5.12/300. Rick Howard photo from 1996 NHRA US Nats, Indy. Failed to qualify for the main show with a 17th best 5.24/292. Did qualify for Big Bud Shootout and improved to 5.05/301 in round one, but lost to Cruz Pedregon.

Notes: Photo from 1982 US Nationals. John was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 5.94 qualified #5. Unfortunately, in round one, he lost to Mike Dunn in the "Hawaiian." In August, he was at OCIR's Summer Showdown event. Ten cars ran the first-round, with the eight lowest ETs advancing into the semifinals. John easily made it as he set Low ET of the meet with a 5.91/233 to beat Mert Littlefield. He advanced with a 6.11/222 over Craig Epperly in the semifinals, who was driving for Joe Pisano at this race. In the final, he faced Billy Meyer. Both had problems, but Meyer's wasn't as bad as his 8.21 beat Lombardo's 10.17 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and he smoked the tires to a 6.16/227.27 in the first round, that lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 5.89/242 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." John also lost in the first round, at the NHRA US Nationals. He ran 5.94/249.30 to qualify #10, but he lost to Tom Anderson in the opening round. NHRA ran the Golden Gate Nationals at Fremont, and the Pro classes were just eight-car shows. Lombardo out-qualified many "big name" drivers with his 5.97/240.64 (#5). But an off-pace 6.17/214.28 in round one, lost to Hawley's 5.85. | Won the 8-car, open nitro Funny Car field at the June Nitro Championships. With CC Amos Satterlee on board, he won the event, 6.10/212 1st round and a 2nd round 5.98 after two burnouts. I don't remember who Lombardo beat in the June OCIR final, although at that Summer FC-TF race, he was among three 5-second FCs in the open-8 car field. The other 2 were Meyer and Pisano/Epperly, who made about 3 afternoon passes. Tire shake got both cars in the final. - Joe Moore

Notes: Segrini started the season the right way by winning the NHRA Winternationals. Crew chief Bill Schultz tuned the car to a 6.04/244.56 to qualify #8. A 6.24/230.76 beat Tom Ridings' 6.26/233 in the first round, while in round two, his 6.30/233.16 beat Gary Burgin's quicker 6.29/227. In the semifinals, he beat Doc Halladay's off-pace 7.92 with a 6.21/239.36. This put him in the final against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle was favored due to his times, as he had run 5.97, 6.02, and another 5.97 en route to the final. But in the final, the "Max" slowed to a 6.32/226 that lost to Segrini's 6.26/238.09. Al got to Beadle again at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, in March. Al qualified #9 with a 6.11/243.24 that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Beadle. In their first-round race, Raymond got out of shape and hit the guardrail. The impact flipped the car onto its roof. He was OK, but while all eyes were on the "Blue Max," Al was motoring to the first-round win with a 6.18/223.32. Unfortunately, he lost to Paul Smith in round two. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the Bakersfield March Meet with his 6.40/224.43 falling short of the 6.35 "bump." At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde in the first round. He competed at Atlanta's Spring Funny Car race in April but failed to reach the finals. Al was back at Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he was the third alternate with a best of 6.18/231.95 for the eight-car show. He was at Rockingham on May 2 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #2 with a 5.97 behind Beadle's track record 5.86. Al beat Burgin in the first round, before losing to Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Segrini qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.19/237.46. But in round one, the car broke, advancing eventual winner Beadle. He ran really well at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.10/243.90 qualified #11. In the first round, he faced Beadle, who qualified with a 5.98. But the "Blue Max" smoked all eight pistons while Segrini advanced with a 6.16/238.09. He beat Dale Pulde in round two, and a 6.27/236.84 got around Bernstein's 6.32/223 in the semifinals. This set up a final-round meeting with Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler.” The final wasn't even close, as Segrini slowed to 6.42/217.39 while Hawley got the victory with a 6.07/233. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 5.95 qualified #3. Al lost to Pulde in the first round. He also lost in the first round, at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.18/225.00. There Tim Grose beat him. Segrini made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 6.03/235.60. Al's best NHRA times were 5.910 at Brainerd and 245.23 (5.915) at Indy. He scored two runner-ups in addition to the Pomona win. Al jumped into the Joe Pisano car at the 1982 OCIR Manufacturers Meet.

Notes: Stan was at Edgewater in May for the NHRA Division 3 race. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.21/211.76 but got crossed up in the opening round and lost to Chuck Finders. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.37/225.00 qualified #14, and he repeated the number in the first round but lost to John Lombardo's 6.27. He was at West Salem's Dragway 42 at the end of July for the AHRA Grandnationals. His 6.46/222.77 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tom Hoover. Graham got crossed up in their race and shut off to 11.73/89.91 while eventual winner, Hoover, ran 6.45/221 to advance. Early in August, he faced Gary Bolger driving the "Golddigger" in a best of three match race at Tri-City. The race didn't go three rounds as Stan won two straight with times of 6.48/219 and 6.60/215. He was at Martin, Michigan, shortly after for the PHR Championships. The first round was a qualifying round, and his 6.48 over Kenny Safford made the eight-car field. In the first round, he lost to Hoover again. Stan ran 6.35/229.59 in winning Beech Bend WCS over Billy Meyer in Al Bergler's car. He was the fifth alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.306/230.17. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. | Competitive with steel, '58 heads. - Joe Moore

Notes: Dale qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.399/268.65. Unfortunately, he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round. The team ran a very limited schedule, showing up mostly at races close to home. In July, Pulde was driving the car at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.600/250.34 qualified #13. A first-round 5.80 lost to Jim White's 5.67. He also attempted to qualify at the next NHRA race, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle, but his 5.752/201.79 best was good for second alternate. After skipping the next few races, the team showed up at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Fallnationals where they qualified #3 with a 5.492/266.82. Pulde lost in the first round. His best NHRA outing of '89 came at the season ending World Finals back at Pomona. Dale ran a 5.415/266.35 to qualify #8. A first-round 5.529/266.11 beat Al Hofmann and in round two a 5.574/251.11 got around Jerry Caminito. In the semifinals, he lost to Bruce Larson's 5.37/252 with a 5.569/264.00.

Notes: Flip-Up Funny Car. We need to confirm aspiration, fuel, and class. Edit these fields if necessary when we get confirmation. Larry Reyes met Bill Taylor in '66, and Taylor let him drive his new Funny Car. Reyes liked it as the team won some races. He continued to drive for Taylor for the next two years. He drove the "Kingfish" part-time during the '67 season as he held a full-time job at Jones Imports in Memphis. The team went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Larry ran 8.52/172. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for its Factory Showdown race. It was an eight-car field, and Reyes won his first-round race but could not race in the semifinal when the car lost oil pressure. In mid-April, Reyes beat Bob Sullivan's "Pandamonium" Camaro in a best of three match race at Alton Dragway. On April 16, the "Kingfish" was at Memphis for a best of three against Bobby Woods Chevelle. In their first race, the Chevelle got out of shape and was all over the track, so Woods shut down, and Reyes ran 9.12 to win. They both left the line together in the second race before both lost traction. Reyes recovered first, and he ran 9.27/151.60 for the win. Woods had blown both head gaskets, so Joe Lunati filled in with his Camaro for the last race. It made no difference to Reyes as he reset both ends of the track record with an 8.41/172.50. Reyes was also driving at Cecil County for the three-day Super Stock Nationals. He was in the "unlimited" class for blown cars only. On Friday, he shut off to 8.64/156.25 in a loss to Roger Wolford's 8.46/166 in the opening round. On Saturday, the "Kingfish" beat Al Vanderwoulde in the opening round, but a blown rear end prevented further competition. The car was repaired for Sunday, and this time Larry's 8.19/179.56 lost to Jack Chrisman's 8.07/184 in the first round. A Super eliminator was also run on Sunday to have sixteen fuel-burning cars and sixteen gas-burning cars run separately until there was one left of each to run against each other for the title. A handicap was given based on the times run by the cars over the weekend. Reyes continued to have problems in the first round, and this time his 8.18/174.41 could not overcome Tom Grove's .5 second handicap. Grove's unblown Mustang beat him with an 8.36/166. Reyes ran 7.97/189.08 at the OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67.

Notes: Dave was at Irwindale on June 5 for the NHRA Division Seven race. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.67/214.28 lost to eventual winner John Lombardo's 6.61. Condit and the Hooker set Low ET at the Orange County PDA Meet in August at 6.51. Fifth alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.49/219.51. Qualified #6 with a 6.271/231.36 at Ontario 10/11/75. Lost fire in round one, and lost to Denny Savage. Hometown confirmed. Did this car go 6.21 somewhere this year? We previously listed that.

Notes: Photo from 1987 Winston All-Stars race at Texas Motorplex. West qualified #5 with a career-best 5.543 at 260.86. West qualified #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.63/255.39. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.83/250.48 lost to low-buck racer Steve Hodkinson's 5.74/241. On March 15, the "Hawaiian" team went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. A 5.90/241.93 qualified #3. West ran 6.17/204.08 in the first round, to beat a tire-smoking Paul Smith, but the run was costly as it hurt the motor, and he was unable to return to run in the semifinals. A week later(March 22), they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There a 5.67/257.65 qualified #8. An easy 5.79/242.19 beat Scott Kalitta's off=pace 6.21/185 in round one. Johnny's 5.81/248.48 beat Jim Head's smokey,6.75/119. Ed McCulloch also smoked the tires against him in the semifinals, and West's 5.76/252 advanced. However, all was not rosy as West had spun a bearing in his semifinal win. The team had to install a new "bullet" for the final, and in their haste, they failed to torque down the cylinder heads properly. Their final-round opponent was Don Prudhomme. Shortly after leaving, the line and "Hawaiian" broke, leaving the "Snake" all alone to run 5.72/260 for his first victory since '82. As mentioned above, he ran a career-best 5.543/263.92 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star event. In the first round, he faced the low qualifier, Kenny Bernstein, and despite running 5.64/227.79, he lost to Bernstein's "Batmobile" at 5.39/263. The next stop was at Firebird Raceway for the Coor's Funny Car race. Ten cars were there that were to make two runs each. The two Low ET cars would then meet in the final. In West's first race, his 6.23/186.33 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.22/231. He picked up to 5.95/231.95 to win his second race when Tom McEwen crossed the centerline. Only two cars had run fives, his and John Force, who had run 5.88 and 5.85 to reach the final. Both made strong runs in the final as both crossed the stripe at 5.89 (West at 225.56), but Force got the "win" light. It was then back to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Johnny ran 5.78/244.63 to qualify the #8 beat he lost in the opening round to Kalitta. Famoso held its Bakersfield Meet on May 3, and West qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 5.82/231.36. But in round one, his 6.10/225.00 held to the eventual winner Force, at 5.65/264. The team got a shot in the arm at Tulsa International for its annual Spring race. It was another eight-car show, and West qualified #2 with a 5.92/240.64. An opening round 6.00/238.72 beat Ron Dudley's 6.17/237, and he had a close race with Prudhomme in the semifinals that saw both run 6.04 (West at 240.64), but Johnny took the win. He faced Darrell Amerson in the final, and Darrell had just turned a career-best 5.93 in winning his semifinal race. But the run had been costly, and Darrell was a no-show, so West singled for the victory with a 5.94/243.24. The "Hawaiian" was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals near the end of May. Only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field, and West qualified last at 12.16/68.22. But the race was postponed one week due to rain. Crew chief Roland Leong could not return for the rain date, so Johnny had to work double duty. Things worked out pretty well. A first-round 5.65252.03 stoppedMcEwen's 6.11/237. A second-round 5.63/256 halted the "Snake's" 5.81/250, and in the semifinals, his 5.68/253 beat Jim Head's troubled 7.42/132. He faced Bernstein in the final, which was the end of the run for West. A 5.99/233.83 finished second best to Kenny's 5.76/258. Confirmed 263.69 at Ennis TX 10/87. Did Johnny go 5.501 at NHRA Maple Grove? We think that is a misprint because Mark Oswald is credited with Low ET there at 5.512. | At Englishtown on 8/30/87 during the K-Mart/Polaroid US All Pro Funny Car Championships, it had read that Johnny Ran 5.359 against John Force in the 2nd Round. However, it was discovered a malfunction Time stop Photocell had shaken loose from the fastener due to the turbulence from West's car & stopped the clocks (Report from 9/6/87 copy of Raceway News). - Rob McCabe

Notes: On this car's very first run, we set a new track record at Detroit for ET and MPH. We raced at 14 events in 1971 and set track records at 11 of the 14 events. Later that year, I had the worst funny car fire in the history of drag racing to that point at Lebanon Valley, NY. I was burned over 60 percent of my body. I needed skin grafts, etc. I was laid up for a year. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6/08/15

Notes: Al started the year with a non-qualifying effort at the NHRA Winternationals (times not reported). Things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #7 with a 6.039/231.95. Unfortunately, he slowed to a 6.306/226.70 in the first round, and lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.06/238. Atlanta had only eight-car fields in the PRO categories for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Segrini got in on the "bump" with a 6.165. He lost to Shirl Greer driving Larry Coogle's "Sting" in the first round, when Al shut off to a 10-second run. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where only eight cars showed for the eight-car field. Al qualified #3 with a 6.09, and a 6.15 in round one, beat Dick Rosberg. He fell off to a 6.42 in the semifinals and lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.22 in the "Blue Max." He qualified #3 again at the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.07. He beat Dale Armstrong in the first round, with a 6.27, but in the semifinals, the car locked up in reverse, and he could not run Beadle. More highlights of '81 included a three straight match race victory over Bruce Larson at New England. Al ran times of 6.25/224.43, 6.10/231.95, and 6.15/231.95 to beat Bruce, who had a best of 6.24/223. Ten cars ran the first-round at Englishtown's Night of Thrills, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Segrini made that final by running 6.27/229.01 to beat Gary Burgin. In the final, he faced Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler" car. Al tried hard, but his 6.39/228.42 finished runner-up to Hawley's 6.18/230. Another runner-up finish to Hawley came at the Funny Cars under the Stars event in New England. This time Al's 6.21/222 finished second best to the "Chi-Town's" 6.08/224. Segrini was not pleased with the NHRA Springnationals, where he could only run a best of 6.382/224.99. That was good for the fourth alternate. He did not attend the NHRA Mile-High Nationals in Denver, but he was back on the NHRA tour for the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #13 with a 6.200/233.16. But Hawley seemed to have his number as he stopped Segrini in the first round, 6.17/229 to a 15-second shutoff. Atlanta held a four-car show in July, and Al was the winner. He beat Greer in his first race with a 6.31/228, and in the final, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.15/230.76 that beat Dale Pulde. On July 26, he was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Eastern Regional. A 6.28/225.57 qualified #3, and a 6.16/226.70 in the first round, beat a tire-smoking Greer. He lost a close one to Tom Anderson in the semifinals, where Al's 6.20/226.70 lost to Anderson's 6.19/229. Lebanon Valley held an Funny Car show, and Segrini was there. He was having a bit of a rough time. He fouled against Rick Johnson in his first race, and in his second, he had difficulties and slowed to 11.72/86.12 that lost to Pulde. He finally got a good run in on his third race, where a 6.27/223.32 beat Dominic Santucci. On August 2, Al was back at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. His 6.22/236 qualified #4 for the eight-car show, but he lost in a tire-smoking battle to Al Baldwin in the first round, of eliminations. The NHRA Grandnationals was also just an eight-car field, and this time Al didn't make it. His 6.350/228.42 was the second alternate for the show. Englishtown hosted its Race of Champions race soon after that. The race featured eight cars, each making two passes, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Al's ET's did not get him into the final, but he ran well. First, he beat Beadle's 6.62/163 with a 6.37/225.56 and then defeated a motor-blowing Al Hofmann with a 6.38/230.77. He was back at Englishtown a while later for the US All-Pro Championships. He ran really well there, running times of 6.19, 6.13, and 6.20 with a best speed of 234. He won the race over Gary Burgin, who lost a blower belt in the final. Al ran his best numbers of the year at NHRA Indy with a 6.032/240.00 qualifying #11. He beat broken Craig Epperly in round one, with a 6.110/234.37. in round two, he lost a close one to John Pott, 6.22/232 to 6.259/230.76. Al qualified #13 at Fremont with a 6.112/230.17. He beat Rob Williams on a holeshot in round one, 6.09/234.98 to 6.08/234.98, but Gary Burgin got to him in round two, 6.15/232 to 2.24/233.76. Al was the first alternate at the OCIR World Finals at 6.205/228.42, but he got in. Unfortunately, he shut off against Dale Armstrong in round one, whose 5.93/230 would have been tough to beat.

Notes: Rear-engined. Maynard broke Don Nicholson's stranglehold on the 1966 season with a two out of three match win at Milan. Rupp made a shakedown pass at Detroit on April 24. He ran 9.56/161.57. On May 1, Maynard faced Ed Schartman in a best two out of three match race at US 131. Rupp beat "Fast Eddie's" SOHC Comet two straight with runs of 9.56/157.50 and 9.49/161.46 to the Comet's 9.90/144 and 10.02/140. Rupp showed up at Milan on May 29 and made three passes. The first was a personal best (to this point) at 9.18/164.64. He backed up that time with a 9.24/160 and a 9.26/162. The Chevelle had problems on June 18 at Detroit for a match race against Bob Harrop. Rupp won the first race with a 9.52/162.74, but he could not make it to the line for the second race due to a broken Heim joint. Harrop soloed to tie the race at one each. Maynard got the car fixed for the third race and then had the transmission let him down. Harrop won the race and the match with a 9.35/147. Another match race loss came at National Trail on August 14, where he lost to Don Nicholson three straight. The car was running strong even in the loss. In the first race, Maynard's 8.83/150.50 lost to "Dyno's" 8.41/168. The second race saw the Chevelle improve to an 8.74/163.93 that lost to Don's 8.47/170, and the third race saw Rupp improve even more to an 8.70/164.73 that still lost to Nicholson's track record 8.29/170. The following week (August 21), he was in Connecticut for a match race against Jack Chrisman. Jack's Comet was not running up to par, and Rupp won all three races. But his times were impressive. In their first race, he drove around the Comet with an 8.69/172.08 (track record). Chrisman shut down early in the second race while Rupp motored to 8.87/169.49 for the win. As the engine in the Comet was done, Rupp made one last solo pass, an 8.67/170.77. Every one of his speeds was above the previous track record. In September, at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, Rupp ran runs of 8.54 and 8.51 in the S/XS class, but he was still dwarfed by the Comets of Nicholson and Schartman, who ran 8.31 and 8.28 in class runoffs. On September 10, he was at Detroit, where he ran 8.45/166.85 to beat Emery Cook, who blew a transmission in Don Garlits' Dart. Hubert Platt then stepped in to cover for the broken Dart with his Mustang. Maynard got out of shape and shut off in the next race while Platt ran 8.59/158 to win. After that, the race was called due to rain. Rupp faced off against Jim Liberman, driving the "Brutus" GTO in a best of three at Lions on October 15. Unfortunately, he lost two straight. He got crossed up in the first race, and his 9.69/169.71 lost to Jim's 8.89/144. In the second race, his 9.19/165.13 lost to an 8.77/162 by the Hemi-powered GTO.

Notes: Charlie qualified #12 at Gainesville at 6.591/220.04. In round one, he lost to Pat Foster, 6.47/227 to 7.023/160.42. He competed at Atco for the NHRA Division One final on September 15. A first-round 6.60/204 defeated Harlan Thompson in the "Tom and Jerry" Mustang. He received no ET in the semifinal but got a 212.76 speed while beating Tom Prock's 6.88/161 in the "Custom Body" car. In the final, he went up against Tom Crevasse, who was driving the "Fireball Vega."Crevasse took the victory with a 6.59. Shortly after that, Therwhanger won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Lakeland. He had run as good as 6.82/215 in reaching the final. He faced Roger Lindamood for the title. Lindamood lost oil pressure and shut down while Charlie ran 6.73/202 for the win. Charlie was at Fremont on October 14 for the AHRA World Championships. His 6.57 qualified #10, and in the first round, of competition, he picked up to 6.47 to beat Don Schumacher's 6.51. He had problems on the line in round two against Gerry Glenn and shut off. He ran really well at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA Supernationals. His 6.40/206.79 qualified #4. Schumacher shut off against him in round one, with tire shake, and Charlie advanced with a 6.50/192.30. In round two, an off-pace 6.92/147.78 lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.52/211. He qualified #4 at the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario with a 6.409/201.79. He beat Don Schumacher in round one, 6.50/192.30 to 9.97/74. In round two, he lost to Jim Nicoll, 6.52/211 to 6.92/147.78.

Notes: Ed failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (not sure what car he was driving), where the weak 7.74 "bump" was attributed to bad track conditions. On May 3, he was at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division Six race. He was the only FC driver to show up. On May 24, only three cars showed for the NHRA Division Six race at Bremerton. Ed reset both ends of the NHRA record in qualifying with a 7.19/211.76. After an easy "bye run," he beat Kenny Goodell in the final with a 7.52/210.28. At the third NHRA Division Six race held at Mission Raceway in BC, five cars showed, and McCulloch won again. An easy 7.31 advanced in the opening round, and he got a solo in the semifinal. He faced Frank Hall driving Jerry Ruth's Camaro in the final, and Ed set Low ET and Top Speed while winning at 7.12/212.76. Shortly after that (July 25), he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field at 7.11/205.46. In round one, he defeated Johnny Wright with a 7.17/205. But he fouled away a 7.26/193.46 in round two against John Lombardo. He then went to Kent, Washington, for the Seafair Nationals. Ed made runs of 7.45,7.12 and 7.19/208.60 to reach the final against Ray Alley. Ray's times were more than two-tenths off McCulloch's times throughout eliminations. Somehow, Alley stepped up to 6.99/199 in the final, but he still lost to Ed's 7.05/210.95 (Top Speed). This car's last event took place in Seattle in August for the final NHRA Division Six race. Ed's 7.33/207.84 (Top Speed) beat Kenny Martin, who broke in the opening round. But in the semifinal, the Duster's transmission failed, and he lost to Goodell. So after leaving the race with the trailer in tow, the trailer caught fire due to faulty wiring. The tow car, as well as the trailer and race car, went up in flames. | Cover and 5-page feature in 10/70 issue of Drag Racing USA. - RT

Notes: In my opinion, this was Henry Harrison's best year behind the wheel of an FC. Before this, his biggest claim to fame had been his booting Mickey Thompson's Mustang to a 6.54/226 to take Low ET at the '71 NHRA US Nationals. Having Amos Satterlee as his crew chief didn't hurt either. Ten years earlier, Amos had put a blower on Eddie Schartman's SOHC-powered Comet and made him the most feared Funny Car at the end of the '67 season. While it was no longer a SOHC, he still knew how to make a KB run. Henry's season started at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.79 to qualify #4 for the sixteen-car field. Traction was poor at the meet, and in the first round, he lost to Jack Maroney's 7.65/189 with a 7.69/146. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. It was another sixteen-car show, and his 6.45 qualified #6. His 6.48/226.70 beat Wayne Stoeckel in the opening round of eliminations. But in round two, the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.56/204, beat his 6.85/225.56. He competed at the Bakersfield March Meet, but a 6.65/220.58 lost to Bryan Raines' 6.61/218 in the first round. On April 2, Harrison was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.44/226.70. In the opening round, his 6.40/226.70 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.32/215. In May, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was a tough show as his 6.34 qualified on the "bump." But he improved to 6.29/229.59 to beat Tom McEwen's sleepy 6.07/217 in round one. In the semifinals, Dave Condit's 6.70/181 in the "L. A. Hooker" lost to Henry's 6.26/225.00. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and the "Snake's" 6.04/242 got the victory over his 6.37/229.00. Things went better on June 10 at OCIR's Funny Car Spectacular. He beat Russell Long, driving the "Sundance" Arrow in round one. A second-round 6.22 (Low ET) at 223.32 sent Jim Adolph packing for home. Henry got a solo in the semifinals when Gary Densham broke, and he ran 6.43/214 to advance. In the final, he faced Pat Foster, who was driving for Joe Pisano. Pat had problems and shut down to 12.03 while Henry won another 6.22 at 226. He was at Sacramento for the third NHRA Division Seven race. He set Low ET in qualifying for the eight-car show with a 6.26/224.44. He opened eliminations with a 6.41/224.44 to stop Densham at 6.54/207. Henry got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals as only six cars had shown. He advanced with a 6.33/227.85. He went up against Dave Hough, driving the "Super Shops" Arrow in the final. Dave got the victory with a 6.27/229, while Harrison's motor-blowing 6.40/214.29 got him the runner-up spot. Harrison won the fourth NHRA Division 7 race held at Bonneville Raceway. He set Low ET at 6.52 but only needed a 7.19/219.52 in the final to win as Foster lost a blower belt. On July 29, he qualified #3 at the PDA Championships held at OCIR with a 6.32. He made it into the final before losing to future superstar John Force. He was also runner-up at Beeline's Gold Cup Funny Car race. There it was Tripp Shumake who stopped him in the final. | 1978 D7 Champs. Satterlee worked at Keith Black's at the time, where Engle Cam alumni Wes Cerny was Shop Foreman at one time. - Joe Moore

After a one-week rain delay, John improved to 6.15 in the first round, to beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" car. But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a 7.12 that lost to Dale Armstrong's 6.15. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Force ran 6.065/240.64 to qualify #8. But a 6.283/241.28 in the opening round lost to Len Imbrogno's 6.20/230. He failed to qualify at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals.

Notes: 6.19 at Santa Pod's "World Finals" is considered a little quick for a Euro Funny Car in 1979. however, at that same race, Gene Snow & Raymond Beadle ran a famous 6.00 to 6.04 run. Hasselstrom was usually "really close if not right there" in performance.
