Notes: Two questions for this year. Did Tom run the exact 5.94, 243.24 times that he ran in 1981? Also, did Tom run his OWN car to those times in 1982, or did he only run this Joe Pisano car?

Notes: In mid January Gene won the Lions Grand Premiere when he beat Bobby Rowe (Hawaiian) 6.54, 222.77 to a losing 6.55, 226.13. 1972 was also the first full year that plastic model company Revell was involved with drag racing. Gene's Logghe chassis was used as the template by Revell for all their newly designed funny car model kits. This chassis design, with slight variations, has been in constant production by Revell for almost forty years. Also ran 6.782, 184.42 at Tulsa PRO race. Used a Crowerglide.

Notes: At the 1972 AHRA World Championships(Fremont, CA) Tommy had to beat Tom McEwen twice in order to advance to the final round. In the second round he used a holeshot and a 6.613-216.34 to beat the Goose's 6.53. In the semi-final he was to have raced Dale Pulde(Mickey Thompson Pinto), but Pulde broke on the burnout and McEwen got back in on the break rule via his low et loser(6.53) status. This time Tommy used a better 6.54 to beat Tom's 6.63, setting up a final against Gene Snow. In the final Tommy beat Gene to the finish line 6.688-213.27 to a 7.368-131.77 and then exploded the engine and burst into flames. After Tommy put out the fire and got the car stopped he was informed that he had been disqualified for crossing the center line. There was quite a furor about this ruling because many witnesses claimed it was Snow that crossed the center line. AHRA officials held firm and declared Snow the winner, although according to Drag Racing USAA/Gene privately gave Tommy the prize money but not the title. -- TN | Car received two-page feature treatment in the 9/72 issue of SS&DI; pictured running 427 cammer. -- RT

Notes: AKA the Super Chief. This is Steve Bovan at OCIR in 1968. The car ran mostly on the West coast in 1968. The fans loved the car as the Keith Black hemi always ran great. Nelson held a contest asking the fans to name the car. they came up with "Super Chief" for his Indian (Native American) heritage. The 7.68 was run at OCIR. -- DW

Notes: "All American Boy" Charlie Allen's best remembered funny car was this 1968 Dodge Dart. This was his first flip top funny car, replacing his A/FX Dart. The new machine marked his first flip top, one-piece unit. It was a test in part for Crower products. The car ran OK, registering high 7s. Allen built the car with a Contemporary Fiberglass body with Kenny Ellis tin. Charlie raced the car under the blue & silver Atlantic Dodge and Crenshaw Dodge banners in 1968. Allen collected a $2000 win at Irwindale at the 16 car experimental Stock Invitationals. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. info from James Ibusuki). | Ran a 7.68 Irwindale track record in Oct. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed this car at 7.95. Need to confirm it was this one and not the new red Dart that went the 7.68. BP

Notes: Titanium Chassis. The '71 Pinto was the team car to a '71 Mach 1 driven by Henry Harrison. With trick titanium Woody chassis, the cars were somewhat lighter. Although they started with Fords, both ended up with Hemis early in the year. Harrison qualified the Mach 1 low at '71 Indy (6.54) but Pulde eventually made the final while running 6.70's, losing to the Ace as the Pinto went up in flames. In '72 the Pinto was painted red and the Mach 1 was replaced by a blue Vega. | Pinto ran 223 at Minneapolis 71. - Dale Pulde, 7/03/15

Notes: Al Vanderwoude did not follow the status quo when it came to drag racing. The beautiful "Flying Dutchman" '66 Dart was as normal a car as Vanderwoude ever raced. The Vanderwoudes were regular racers in the early California funny car wars, but the Ted Brown built Dart was Al's first competitive rig. The car served as a rolling catalog for Mickey Thompson parts -- everything Mickey Thompson offered was on the car. The Dart sported one of those Scott Slots, an injector sold only by Mickey Thompson. Of note is that "Scott" quit making these units in 1964 or so, venturing into the world of weapons development. There was more money in missiles and bombs than in racing. Vanderwoude beat a few of the heavy hitters in match races and did OK at some of the bigger open shows. A 1957 392 Chrysler Hemi punched out to 422 cubic inches powered the car. Although not a big winner, Al was popular with race fans. He ran 8.04 at 184 in the Dart in 1967. The was often a handful -- Vanderwoude had severe handling problems at the Super Stock Nationals at Cecil County, MD, and at the Texas vs. California match race at Amarillo, TX. After barely a year of competition, the Dart was replaced by a new '68 Charger. Ran 9.11, 168.85 at OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11-25-67. Notes: Dick Harrell, known to his many fans as Mr. Chevrolet, was forced to abandon his trusty semi-hemi and adopt Chrysler elephant power for his final season. He had stayed with Chevy through 1970, knowing he would not be able to win any major meets, just because he thought his fans expected brand loyalty. In the short 1971 season that followed, that turned out not to be a problem. the fans stayed with him. Harrell was killed on Sept. 12, 1971 on a strip in Toronto, Ontario, when a lightweight front tire came apart at over 200 mph, sending him into a utility pole. Just two days earlier at U.S. 30 Dragstrip (Gary IN) he had participated in a benefit race to defray hospital bills for racer Larry Reyes, who was himself seriously injured in an earlier crash caused by the failure of a front tire. -- RT | In July at Deer Park, Harrell set a 6.95 track record. - Ron Howard

Notes: Conway qualified seventh with a 7.95 at the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19 and he improved to a 7.79 in the second round before losing to Dave Beebe in the semis. At the OCIR Anniversary Race on Aug 9, Conway lost in the first round with an off-pace 8.18-139.53. His times were improving with a 7.64-185.36 run on Aug 16 at Irwindale. The car was then running mid pack, losing early on Sept 6 at OCIR with a 7.88 best and failing to qualify on Sept 21 at Irwindale. Gene turned it up a notch, cracking a 7.40-184.80 at Lion's on Oct 25 for the East-West Championships. Back at OCIR for the Manufacturer's meet, Conway qualified with a 7.69 and won his first race with a 7.67-191.08. A semifinal finish and a 7.55-198.66 best came next at Irwindale's big 32-car show on Nov 23. The car almost caught the Corvette curse at Lion's the following week on Nov 29, when it caught fire on the line in round one. Yet on Dec 6, Conway returned to OCIR to run his best time of 7.37-181.08. He broke in the semifinal. He went back to Irwindale on Dec 14, where he failed to qualify.
