Notes: Pat Foster is a famous chassis builder of many funny cars from the 1960s into the 1980s. Foster also drove many funny cars, including the Mickey Thompson Mach I in 1969. The car was the sister car to the one Danny Ongais drove. Foster built both cars, revolutionizing funny car racing in 1969 with his chassis design. The cars were lighter than their competition, which gave them a distinct advantage over the other funny cars during the first half of the season. The competition started to transition to pure funny car chassis to keep up with Foster's machines. While Ongais went on a winning spree, Foster had a series of gremlins that kept him from winning. The car showed potential with a 6.99 clocking along with a reported 215.31 mph blast at Kansas City. But fate stepped in when Pat Foster was involved in a two-car accident with Gerry Schwartz at Dallas International during the NHRA Springnationals. Schwartz did not survive the crash. Foster continued to build funny cars and became a national-event-winning driver. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info provided by James Ibusuki). | Foster built the two Mustangs identical except that the red car had a longer wheelbase. Steve Montrelli remembers that the teams went through 55 Cammer motors that season. Pat started the season by qualifying #7 at the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.24/181.45. He lost to Ron Leslie in the first round. At OCIR's second All-Pro race on February 9, a 7.88 was good for first alternate. Funny, Ongais failed to qualify at Pomona and Ongais qualified at OCIR. By February 16, both were in the field at the third annual Stardust Open at Las Vegas. Pat ran a first-round 7.90/192.30 over Randy Walls and Charlie Allen broke against him in the semifinal so it became an all Mickey Thompson Mustang final when he faced Ongais in the final. Pat got crossed up and slowed to a 9.85/161.57 for the runner-up spot. He had some gremlins at Lions on February 22 for an eight-car show when he lost fire against Ray Alley in the first round. On March 2 at the Bakersfield March Meet, he failed to qualify. A 7.64 qualified second to his teammate at the HRM Championships on March 16. Pat ran a 7.57/192.30 in the first round, over Johnny Wright, and a second round 7.66/191.48 beat Dave Beebe's 7.78/196 in the Super Chief. In the semifinal a 7.64/191.89 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.96/187 in the Invader. But unfortunately, a broken drive shaft stopped him in the finals, giving Charlie Allen (7.59/194) the win. On May 3, he faced Jim Liberman in a best of three match race at York's US 30. Foster beat Liberman three straight. An 8.11/175.78 won the first race over Jim's out of shape pass, while a 7.82/189.86 won the second race when Liberman fouled away a track record 7.66/191. Pat won the third race by resetting Jim's record with a 7.63 at 188.28. Early in May, Foster faced Bobby Wood in a best of three match race at Thompson. Pat won the first race with a 7.99/189.64 to beat Wood, who burned a piston. Bobby was unable to repair so Foster ran a single to win the match. It was a good run as the track record 7.85 held by Don Nicholson since '67 was put to rest with a 7.60 at 193.54 for the match race victory. Foster had some problems at Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals. On Saturday, May 24, he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Ron O'Donnell. He got back in on the "break rule", but things went worse in the semifinals when after launching, the Mustang went into a wheelstand. Pat landed it and got it straightened out and stomped on it again. This time the car veered to the right and crashed into the guardrail. The body of the Mustang was heavily damaged, but Foster was OK. Foster qualified number one at Bristol with a great 7.352/199.55, but his tragic first-round crash with Schwartz overshadowed that effort.

Notes: Set the national record at 5.900 at 1981 Mile High nationals (altitude factored from a 6.124). Ran first five with a 5.993 at Gainesville 3/15/81 to become the 7th member of the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. We need to confirm that this was a Mike Kase car. | Kenny started the season well by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson on January 18. He qualified #2 with a 6.69/196, and in the first round, he picked up to a 6.56/211 to beat Tom Hoover's 6.85/209. In the semifinals, he ran 6.56 again at 213 to beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme. In the final, he unleashed Low ET (traction was poor) 6.54/214 to take the win over low qualifier Gordie Bonin's 6.68/202. Kenny barely made the field at Pomona on February 1 for the NHRA Winternationals, qualifying #15. He lost to Denny Savage in the first round. That should have been it for his Pomona story, but in the semifinals, his Texas neighbors, the "Blue Max" team, had blown off its roof on a 245 mph run that beat Prudhomme. They had no spare body, so Bernstein offered up his spare. The "Max" team cut the roof off of his car and grafted it onto theirs. All that effort, and they lost to Billy Meyer in the final. On March 8, Kenny was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.426/226.13 qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, the race was postponed one week due to rain, and he could not return the following week. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 6.014/245.90. He beat Ron Colson's 6.06/233 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 5.993/238.72. He advanced past Prudhomme in round two when the "Snake" got crossed up. In the semifinal, he lost to Bonin. A week later (March 22), he was in the winner's circle at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET at 6.18 and beat Shirl Greer and Dale Pulde to reach the final. In the final, he ran the team he helped at Pomona, the Raymond Beadle-driven "Blue Max." Kenny took the victory with a 6.45/212. On April 5, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. It was an eight-car show, and Kenny's 6.27/233.76 qualified #2. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.15/240.00 that beat Brian Conway. In the semifinals, a 6.45/209.79 lost to Beadle's 6.25/228. The NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta also had an eight-car field. It was a tough show to make with a 6.16 "bump." A 6.09/241.28 qualified Bernstein #3. He made his way to the finals by beating Meyer in the first round, with a 6.08/242.58, and in the semifinals, Prudhomme broke against him. In the final, he faced Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's Arrow. It was a close race, but Tripp's 6.07/233 beat Kenny's 6.08/243.90 (Top Speed). May 3 found the "Budweiser King" team at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #2 with a 6.03 and won his first-round race over Paul Smith with a 6.14/231.36. In the semifinal, his 6.28/226.70 lost to Meyer's 6.26/213.77. OCIR hosted the NHRA Western Regional on May 9. Things didn't go well there. It was an eight-car show with a soft "bump" of only 6.47. The "Budweiser King" failed to qualify. After that, it was off to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.17/245.90 (Top Speed) qualified #5 in the eight-car field. He faced low qualifier Beadle in the first round, smoked the tires, and lost. Kenny ended May with a runner-up finish to Meyer at the IHRA World Nationals. He did come away with Low ET at 5.97. At the NHRA Springnationals, Kenny qualified #5 with a 6.12/239.36. This set up an interesting first-round race with his eventual crew chief, Dale Armstrong. Bernstein won that first-round race with a 6.18/238, but he didn't get much further when his round two 6.21/233.16 lost to Beadle's 6.15/235. Kenny did really well in the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.17/217.91; in the first round, his 6.24/227.84 beat Shumake's 6.28/228. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.12/238.72, beating John Collins' 6.49/189. In the final, he ran the "Blue Max." Bernstein won a 6.21/234.37 over Beadle's 6.32/202. The "Budweiser King" really opened some eyes at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where Kenny pushed the car to a 5.860 at 237.46 in qualifying. Of course, that was Low ET and a new track record. He beat Smith in round two with a 6.08/238.72, while a tire-smoking 6.38/225.56 advanced in round two when Frank Hawley broke in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Unfortunately, a semifinal 6.24/233.76 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.19/230. He lost to Prudhomme again the following week at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. Only this time, it was in the final. The Budweiser team then returned to Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals in early August. Kenny qualified #3 with a 6.14, and then in the first round, his off-pace 6.70 lost to Smith's 6.50. But Paul's Citation broke while getting the win and could not run the semifinals, so Kenny got back into the show. A 6.30/232.55 beat Meyer, who smoked the tires. He ran the "Blue Max" in the final, and Beadle won, running 6.20/238 to Bernstein's 6.30/221.67. A week later (August 9), he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Kenny's 6.07/241.93 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He beat Tom Anderson and Beadle to reach the final, where he faced Prudhomme again. This time, Bernstein got out of shape and shut off to 14.01/55.14, giving the "Snake" the win at 7.18. The next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was another eight-car show, and things didn't look so good when he qualified on the "bump" with a 6.32. His 6.35/225.80 beat Hawley's 6.39/217 in the opening round. In the semifinals, he advanced when Gary Burgin broke. The final featured Bernstein versus Armstrong, but Dale had broken in his semifinal win, so Bernstein soloed for the victory. A week later (August 23), these two would meet again in the final at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Beech Bend. They qualified 1/2, with Armstrong's 6.10/223 leading and Bernstein chasing with a 6.18/222.22. A first-round 6.35/219.51 beat Fuzz Miller's 6.63/190. Kenny's 6.19/217.39 in the semifinals beat John Pott's 6.27/217. That put the two into the final, where Kenny improved to 6.14/234.98 to take the victory over Armstrong's 6.24/235. Then came the US Nationals at Indianapolis. Bernstein ran an impressive 247.25 while qualifying in the dreaded #9 spot. This set up a first-round pairing with low qualifier Beadle. They had a good race, but Raymond's 6.02/246 won over Kenny's 6.09/241.28. Beadle would go on to win the race. Bristol was next on the calendar for the IHRA US Open. Bernstein's track record 5.98 at 242.58 qualified #1 in the eight-car show. In the first round, Burgin smoked the tires, and Kenny's 6.10/220.04 advanced. In the semifinals, he had a blower explode that ripped the roof and windshield off the car. His 6.36/197.80 lost to eventual winner Pott's 6.07/234 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." NHRA held its final Western Regional race at Houston on September 20. Only five cars showed, and Kenny's 13-second time qualified last. In the first round, he and Shumake had a tire smoker that saw his 6.75/185.95 beat Tripp's slightly quicker 6.74/213. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.25/218.44 over Miller's right there at 6.28/229. This put the "Budweiser King" into another final. But this time, a tire-smoking 10.80/79.00 lost to Burgin's 6.49/220. The year was winding down, and Bernstein wanted to move up in the NHRA points standings. Going into the Golden Gate Nationals, he was second in points with 6,070 behind Beadle's 7,062. Prudhomme followed these two with 5,772 points. But Fremont was not good to the points chasers. Twenty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the 16-car field. While Beadle qualified and made it into the semifinals, neither Bernstein nor Prudhomme made the show! Kenny was the fifth alternate with a 6.22/207.85 best. On his last qualifying attempt, he blew a motor. That pretty much ended his hopes in the points chase. Things went even worse at the season-ending NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Bernstein could do no better than the sixth alternate with a 6.27/188.28 best. Prudhomme snuck past him in points, and Bernstein finished third for the year. The NHRA season might have ended, but a whole new chapter in the Bernstein story was about to begin. It started at OCIR on November 7 for the Manufacturer's Meet. For the first time, Armstrong came on board as crew chief. While the results were not immediately felt, it was the start of a super team. Bernstein won his first race with a 6.56/211 over Dave Condit, and in his second race, he smoked the tires and lost to Mike Dunn. The track was not at its best, as Low ET was 5.98 by Billy Meyer. Formerly listed a 250 mph run at an AHRA national event. We need confirmation of that and using the Indy 247.25 until we get it.

Notes: Billy was still running his Camaro when he showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. In March, he was driving his new Arrow at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #6 with a 6.36/235. He broke an engine in the first round, but his 6.37/221 still beat Pat Foster's 6.39/230 in Joe Pisano's Firebird. A new Milodon was installed for round two, and he blew the oil pan off while running a 6.91/192 that advanced over Tim Kushi's troubled 13.51. In the semifinals, he singled with a 9.32 when Gordie Bonin failed to fire. In the final, he met Dale Pulde. This would not be easy as Pulde had been running steady 6.3s. Sure enough, Dale prevailed with a 6.42/234 over Meyer's runner-up effort of 6.52/213.77. Still, not too bad for a new car. The following week (March 19), he won the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace. He qualified #2 with a 6.56/214.79 behind Tripp Shumake's 6.52/207. Meyer set Low ET in the opening round with a 6.28 that beat Raymond Beadle, who smoked the tires in the "Blue Max." His 6.37/221.67 took out Tom Prock's off-pace 7.18/147 in the "Detroit Tiger" in the semifinal. He stopped Tom Hoover's 6.81/204 in the final with a 6.71/218.44. Early in April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.21/221.67. Unfortunately, the car broke on the run, and he could not run in eliminations. His next stop was at Green Valley Raceway for the second NHRA Division Four race. His 6.34/214.79 qualified #4. He improved to 6.25/226.13 in the opening round to defeat Larry Brown. The car broke a rod in the semifinal while doing a burnout to prepare for its race against Billy Graham. Meyer was at OCIR later in April for its enormous 64 Funny Car show. He lasted until round two before losing to Ed McCulloch.Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of the month (April 30). It was an eight-car show, and Meyer qualified #6 with a 6.50/222.22. In the first round, his 6.60/229.00 fell to Hoover's 6.52/226. Billy was at Cayuga in May for the NHRA Division 1 race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.45 (Low ET). He then beat Rick Johnson in the opening round with a 6.54/209.79. In round two, he got a solo as both Roy Harris and Ron Colson both had broken in their first-round match. In the final, he faced Al Segrini, and the two had a great race that saw Al's 6.56/222 beat Billy's slightly quicker 6.55/227.84 (Top Speed). Edgewater hosted an eight-car show that was to have all eight cars make three runs, with the two Low ET cars coming back to run for the final. In Billy's first race, his 6.40 beat Dale Creasy. In the second race, his 6.41 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.12. He ran his best time in the third race, a 6.32, but he still lost to Denny Savage's 6.19. Meyer did not run quick enough to reach the final. He qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.32/230.17, and in the first round, his 6.40/209.30 advanced when Denny Savage shut down early with problems. But in round two, Meyer had troubles and shut down to an 8.10/113.78 loss to Tom McEwen's 6.25/215. At the beginning of the year, Meyer had switched from the KB engines he had used in '77 to Milodon engines for '78. But around the beginning of July, he ordered four new KB engines to replace the Milodon motors he had been running. Delivery was to take eight to ten weeks. He was at Byron for its Manufacturer's race where his 6.47/218.44 beat Bill Pryor in round one. But although he set Low ET and Top Speed in his next round race against McEwen, his 6.31/238.72 lost to Tom's 6.33/214. He really qualified well at Englishtown, where a 6.060/236.84 got him the #2 spot in the field, but he was upset by Segrini in the first round. | The 6.060 was his best NHRA ET for this year, and a 241.93 at the World Finals was his best NHRA speed. Billy ran 5.99 at New England in August. Did he also run a 5.97 somewhere this year?

Notes: Dale's season didn't turn out the way he would have liked. For the first time in ten years of competition, he failed to reach a single final round in NHRA or IHRA events. He did run 5.60s with a 5.690 at Pomona and a 5.64 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Pulde started the season with a first-round loss to Frank Hawley at the NHRA Winternationals. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00/243.90, but in the first round, the Firebird broke, advancing Al Segrini. His first IHRA event was the Winternationals held at Darlington on March 5. Dale qualified #11 with a 6.11, but he again lost in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he lasted until the second round, where he fouled against eventual winner Billy Meyer. Rockingham hosted the second IHRA race on May 6, the Pro-Am Championships. Pulde ran well but failed to make the finals. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had an eight-car field that made qualifying tough. Pulde made the show and beat Jim White in the first round, with an engine destroying 5.99/238. Unfortunately, he could not race Meyer in the semifinals due to the damage. He had another semifinal finish at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Pulde had downed Tom McEwen in round two with a 5.83/227.84 before losing to Meyer in the semis. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00/234.98, but in the first round, McEwen's 5.93/247 stopped his off pace 7.39/120. Dale got a final round appearance at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #2 with a 5.86 and made it into the final, but the car broke, and Hawley soloed to win in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He qualified #6 with a 5.87/232.55 at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. His 6.08/227.84 lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle's 5.96/247 in the "Blue Max." After Denver, he was still holding in the seventh spot in the NHRA points. Pulde qualified well at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals, but he lost early in eliminations. The next NHRA event on the schedule was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Dale qualified #4 and lasted until round two before losing to Jim Head. Dale ran 5.86/247 at ADRA Dragway 42. Photo from Indy 1984.

Notes: Steel GTO with factory frame. Along with Chrisman's Comet, Mr. Norm's AWB '65 Dodge and a handful of others, Beswick's blown Mystery Tornado match racer prompted Super Stock & Drag Illustrated to ask whether "we may see a return of the fuel coupe and sedan-type racing, so popular in the early days of drag racing." - RT | Built during the 1964 season when Jack Chrisman and the Dodge Chargers factory teams were grabbing headlines, this car also had the only set of aluminum 1964 GTO fenders Pontiac ever made according to Arnie. Beswick found the car so popular that he dropped his new A/FX Mercury sponsorship deal midway through the '65 season rather than park the Tornado. After building the 1963 Tameless Tiger Tempest, the chassis was sold to a circle track team in the Quad Cities region and was subsequently destroyed. The lightweight panels from the car were lost in a well-publicized fire at Beswick's farm. - GS | Arnie faced Dick Landy for a best-of-five match race at Capitol on July 31. He won the first race when Landy fouled, but Dick came back to win the second race. The third race saw Beswick's 9.72/145 beat the Dodge. Landy tied up the match at two, each with a 9.78/140 in the fourth race. The tiebreaker was won by Landy, giving him the match race win. – RH | Apparently, Arnie was credited with an 8.63/163 at Byron, IL, in the September 19, 1965, Drag News issue. Byron IL 1965 (9/18/65 Drag News), but Bret Kepner confirmed it was actually an 8.69 at Cordova (7/23, Bill & Bret late night phone call)

Notes: Tony qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.10/295.37 behind Cruz Pedregon's 4.93/307. In the opening round, he was upset by Richard Hartman's 5.04/297, which defeated his 5.11/300.50. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.17/297.52 qualified #5. In the first round, his 5.14/296.54 beat Dean Skuza's 5.24/280, but he lost to Kenji Okazaki in round two. He qualified #5 again at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.12/291.45. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. He slipped to #12 in qualifying with a 5.23/297.02. A slightly better 5.21/283.46 beat Hartman in round one, and a 5.12/300.40 (Top Speed) beat Gary Densham's 5.38/244 in round two. Despite running a strong 5.15/300.30 in the semi-final, he lost to car owner John Force's 5.02/273. Shortly after that, Tony was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was only an eight-car field, and his 5.14/284.90 qualified #4. In the first round, his 5.26/285.53 fell to Del Worsham's 5.21/281. The following week, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #6 at 5.15/275.81. In round one, his 5.11/300.50 took out Skuza's 5.23/279. A 5.12/298.30 dropped Densham's 5.32/265 in round two, and in the semi-final, a 5.05/296.73 took care of Whit Bazemore's 5.34/286. He faced Force in the final, and Pedregon ran 5.10/294.59 to get the victory over his boss's 5.31/275. He then went to Richmond in the first week of May for the NHRA Virginia Nationals, where he hoped to score another win. He qualified #4 with a 5.09/291.54. A off-pace 5.56/269.78 ended any chance in the first round, where he lost to Brad Platt's 5.32/238. Tony was the fifth member of the Castrol Four Second Club on July 5, 1996, with a 4.971 at Topeka, Kan. Tony's best times of the year came in a 4.909/208.64 #1 qualifying effort at NHRA Ennis Fall.

Notes: Tom was in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.53 and had an easy first-round win. In the second round, both he and opponent Gene Snow had difficulties getting traction, and Hoover's 6.92 got the win over Snow's 7.13. In the semifinals, Hoover's "Showtime" once again smoked the times, and this time, his 7.52 lost to eventual winner Mike Van Sant's 6.82 in the "Invader." Tom did not race at the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There, he qualified #9 with a 6.300/211.26. But again, he went up in smoke, and his opening round 8.187/104.04 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.062/219.51. Tom then went to Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.444/214.79 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 6.47/209.30 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.57/207.37. He lost to Bob Pickett's 6.65/221.13 in round two with a 6.74/220.04. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The third 200 MPH FC Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events, as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Hoover at a 6.08 and Bob Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Later in April, Hoover was in Kansas City for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. He reached the final at that event by stopping Wilfred Boutilier in the first round with a 6.41. A 6.39 in round two took out Dick Custy, and a 6.35 in the semifinals beat Tom McEwen. He faced Snow in the final. Snow had been running just a little quicker throughout eliminations with a 6.26 best, but the race never came off as Hoover lost oil pressure and shut off, giving Gene a solo for the victory. In May, he was in Tulsa for the AHRA Okie Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.81 and lasted until round two, where Dale Emery's 6.65/208 beat his 6.71/217.88. Later in the month, he was runner-up to Snow again at the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit Dragway. He grabbed a victory at St. Louis on June 6 for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his opening round 6.65/217.40 advanced over Jerry Messer's broken Mustang II at 14.24. In the semifinals, his 6.73/210.86 beat Emery, who smoked the tires. For the third time that season, Hoover would face Snow in the final. Once again, Gene had been running quicker during eliminations with a 6.56 best. But this time, Snow overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover ran his best, a 6.53/209.86, to pick up the win. The following week (June 13), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.635/207.85. He lost a close race against Gary Burgin in the first round, with his 6.604/218.97 falling to Burgin's 6.591/214.79. He was still driving the Vega in July at the AHRA Nationals at Green Valley Raceway. He was quick off the line in his first-round race with Custy as Tom's 6.24 beat Dick's slightly quicker 6.23. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.19 lost to Tom Prock's 6.09. Tom's 5.999/232.55 times were among several questionable numbers recorded at Green Valley Race City events. Tom came out with a new Monza at Martin, Michigan, in mid-August for the PHR Championships and raced it throughout the end of the season. | Former Don Prudhomme Vega that Tom Hoover ran from Spring 1974 through mid-Summer 1976 with three different paint schemes. Notes: In Jan, Johnson was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.83/245.23. He was up against Paul Smith driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo in the first round. Rick went into some hard tire shake and shut off. He started his '85 NHRA season by qualifying #8 with a 5.84/250.69 at Pomona for the Winternationals. Rick beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.66/259.81, and in round two, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.58/263.62 that beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/235. He failed to back up the ET for a new national record. In the semifinals, his 5.92/249 lost to eventual winner Al Segrini's 5.79/253. Atlanta held an eight-car show on March 10, and Johnson qualified #1 with a 5.79/251.39. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 5.71/256.41 over a tire-smoking Ed McCulloch. In the semifinals, it was he who smoked the tires, and he lost to Smith's 6.36/220. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.72/255.82. But in round one, he fouled against Tom Hoover. Rick was back at Firebird on April 6 for the Coors Funny Car Championships. All eight cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. A first-round 6.44/237.46 lost to John Force's 5.89/202, and in his second race, his 6.02/252.10 (Top Speed), lost to Gary Densham's 6.03/231. But he made the final when Force had a blower explode in his second race and could not run the final. So once again, Johnson lined up against Densham. Once again, Gary won; this time, his 5.98/238 got him the victory over Rick's 6.06/252.10 runner-up effort. He qualified #3 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.81/256.99 (Top Speed), but bad luck hit him in the first round, when he lost a blower belt against Ron Correnti. Things went well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he dominated the eight-car Funny Car program. Rick set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.72/254.33. A 5.76/252 beat Jim Dunn in round one, and in the semifinals, he beat Jim's son Mike with a 5.94/247 over the younger Dunn's 5.98/242. He took the victory with a 5.94/241.28 over Densham's 6.34/234 Daytona in the final. On May 11, he was at Firebird Raceway for a best-of-three-match race against Force. Unfortunately, he lost two straight with times of 5.97/244.56 and 5.93/240.90 compared to John's 5.83/243 and 5.79/240. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.89/251.81. A first-round 6.01/245.09 beat Jody Smart, but in round two, his 6.03/242.58 lost to Force's 5.97/244. The "Hawaiian" made a rare IHRA appearance at Bristol for the Springnationals. Rick qualified #10, but he lost early. Next, he was off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.81/251.25 qualified #4, but a quick-leaving John Collins beat Rick's 5.90/249.03 in the first round, with a 5.93/241. He then made the long tow to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals pay off by winning his first NHRA National event. He was running well, making laps of 5.76, 5.77, and 5.79 in qualifying, so it was apparent, he was tough. Rick's 5.76 at 254.38 was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. Round one saw his 5.91/251.25 beat Smith's 6.04/249 in the "Custom Body" car. A 5.87/248.20 took care of Billy Meyer in round two, and a semifinal 5.69/250.13 beat John Lombardo's 5.86/250 in the "Blue Max." In the final, he was up against Bernstein, and the two had a good race with Johnson's 5.72/260.26 (Top Speed and a new track record) getting the victory over Kenny's 5.79/250. Invented the lovely "cowcatcher" nose piece to answer Kenny Bernstein's 1985 long-nose Ford Tempo body. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1985. He was the quickest car in the sport for most of the 1985 season until Bernstein went 5.55 at Rockingham Fall. Ran 5.985/235.60 in runner-up effort at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway 8/85.

Notes: This Corvair would have been Ralph Nader's worst nightmare if he had seen it. Michigander Pete Seaton was one of the first match bash funny car racers. The "Seaton's Super Shaker" '67 Corvair was, in fact, his fourth funny car. The new Chevy was built by the Logghe Bros. At their Logghe Stamping Company. A 427 Chevrolet Semi-Hemi powered the car and was backed by a Torqueflite transmission. Terry Hedrick was chosen to drive the wild Corvair. Hedrick's seat of the pants driving style was awe-inspiring to the funny car fans of the sixties. The Corvair garnered many wins while touring the country in 1967 and 1968. Terry won one day and was runner-up the next at the 1967 AHRA Drag World Super Stock Championships at Wichita, Kansas. Was this Corvair unsafe at any speed? Nah. (Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday, Bill Duke, and James Ibusuki). - BS | He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day Meet where he qualified #1 with an 8.01. A first-round 8.03 advanced him past a fouling Marv Eldridge. He made it past the next two rounds to meet Don Nicholson in the final. An 8.04 by Nicholson put Terry in the runner-up spot. On January 14 for OCIR's eight-car show, Hedrick qualified third with an 8.24/170.77. A first-round 8.28/182.18 beat Dick Loehr's 8.43/168. But in the semi's he was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. On February 25 he raced a best two-out-of-three at OCIR against Nicholson. Don's 8.03/166 and 7.97/172 beat Terry's 8.39/176.12 and 8.36/178.21. He did win the last race with an 8.29/178.57 over Nicholson's shut-off 13.21, but Don won the match. The two met again on April 6 for another best of three match at New York. This time Terry evened the score by winning the match. He won the first race with an 8.00/184.04 over Don's off the track 11.58. Nicholson came back to win the second race with a 7.79/166 over Hedrick's 8.04/182.18. But in the final race, the Corvair set both ends of the track record with a 7.75/185.18 to beat Don and win the match. The next day (April 7), he was at Detroit's Anchorville Motor City Dragway to race Sid Foster's Mustang in a best of three match. Once again Terry set a track record, this time it was an 8.09 at 178. He beat Foster three straight. Nicholson wanted another shot at Hedrick and he got it on May 5 for a best of three at Detroit. Don was now running his new Cougar. Hedrick won the first race with an 8.08/177.51 over "Dyno's" 8.36/164. Nicholson came back to win the second race with an 8.15/171 over the Corvair's 8.16/175.43. But Terry came through to win the match with an 8.09/177.86 to beat Don's shut off run. On May 10 at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships he failed to win, but he did set Low ET at 7.80. At Pittsburgh in May, Terry set both ends of the track record with a 7.84/180.36 while winning the Pittsburgh Funny Car Championships over Jim Liberman. A final round 7.92 beat Jim's quicker 7.88. On June 28, Terry was back at Detroit Dragway for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show. Hedrick beat Clare Sanders in the "Limefire" in the first round, with an 8.29/173.07. In round two, a 7.83/179.64 beat Leonard Hughes' 7.94/182. But in the semifinals, against Roger Lindamood, he got out of shape and went into a ditch along side the top end of the track. It damaged the front end pretty good, but Terry was not hurt. Don Gay met up with Terry on August 4 at LaPlace for a best of three match. Terry took the match two straight with runs of 8.02/182.92 and 7.99/178.82. Hedrick got his biggest win of the year on August 18 at New York National for the AHRA Nationals. He ran times of 7.60 (Low ET), 7.63, 7.67 and a final round 7.68 over Dick Harrell for the title. At Minneapolis on September 1, a first-round 7.89/180.36 was wasted when he fouled against Pat Minick (9.00) in the first round. Another match race against Nicholson was run at New York with the "Seaton Shaker" winning the match with a best of 7.75. He lost in the first round, again at Suffolk for an eight-car show when he got crossed up against Mel Perry. On September 29, he was at Windsor Dragway for a best of three against Lindamood. Terry won all three races with runs of 7.79/181.80, 7.77/184.04 and a final 7.93/179.64. On October 6, he won the AHRA World Finals at Kansas City International. Lakeland International held their Fuel Funny Car Championships on October 20 and Hedrick was there. He won his first-round race with an 8.39/179.64 over Terry Ivey's new Torino, but in the second round, he lost a torque converter and the race to Henry Garcia. - Ron Howard

Notes: The '81 season had an interesting start for the "Blue Max" team. They showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Beadle ran a track record 5.97 at 245.90 (Top Speed) to qualify first. He beat Dennis Geisler with a 6.01/238, and in round two, Mike Dunn with another new track record 5.93 at 245.90. In the semifinals, he again went 5.93 at 245.23 to beat Don Prudhomme. But the win came at a price as the engine blew and tore the roof of the Horizon body. The team didn't have a spare body, so Kenny Bernstein offered his spare. The roof of Bernstein's car was grafted onto the "Max's" topless body for the final. After all that work, he came up to the line in the final to face Billy Meyer, who had been having his own troubles (used up four engines), but the two both had problems, and Meyer's 6.52/205 got the victory over Beadle's 6.66/236.22. The next stop was at Fremont for the East/West meet, and while Beadle didn't win, he did set Low ET at 6.04. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, the team qualified unusually further back in the field with a 6.05/230.76 that was good for the #10 spot in the show. He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 6.20/234.37, but an off-pace 6.31/230.76 in round two lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.27/237. The next event they attended was the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. Raymond made it to the final before losing to Bernstein. Green Valley Raceway was their next stop for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. A 6.45/227.84 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, and he picked up to 6.32/233.76 in the first round to beat Chris Berg. A 6.25/228.42 beat Bernstein in the semifinals, and he went into the finals to meet with Hoover. Beadle got another runner-up finish as his 6.45/231.36 lost to Hoover's 6.32/231. Atlanta hosted the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 26, featuring eight-car fields in the nitro classes. Raymond qualified #1 with a track record 5.96 at 230.17. Unfortunately, a blown motor slowed him to a 6.23 in the first round, which lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.11. Things went much more their way at Rockingham; the "Max" ran a track record 5.99 at 231.95 in qualifying #1. This was IHRA's first five-second time in the Funny Car division. A 6.00/233.70 beat Shirl Greer in the first round and backed up the 5.99 as a new IHRA record. In round two, Raymond's 6.22 beat Al Segrini, setting up a Meyer vs. Beadle final. The "Max" got the win, running 6.23/229.59 over Billy's troubled 7.46. These two would meet again in the final at the next IHRA race, the Springnationals at Bristol. There Beadle qualified #1 with a track record 5.98 at 240.64. He beat a tire-smoking Bernstein in the first round with a 6.22, while a solo run of 6.18 advanced him into the final when Segrini's car broke on the line. The two reversed their finishes of the last race, with Meyer winning with a 6.21/228 over Raymond's 6.26/236.84. The FCs boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals, holding out for more money. May ended with the team running at the IHRA World Nationals, but they failed to reach the finals. In June, the "Blue Max" made it into another final round at the NHRA Springnationals. Raymond had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.05 at 234.37. Bob Pickett got out of shape against him in the first round, and his 6.20/219 advanced. In round two, Beadle went up against Texas neighbor Bernstein. The "Max's" 6.15/235 beat the "Budweiser King's" 6.21/233. Another 6.15/227 in the semifinals took out Hoover's 6.36/202. This put him into the final against 24-year-old Craig Epperly in Don Tait's car. This had the makings of an upset, and it was. Both recorded 6.21 (Beadle at 236.84), but Epperly scored his first NHRA National event victory while Beadle had to settle for runner-up. On July 4, the team was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.23/229.59 behind Bernstein's 6.17. These two worked their way to the final. Beadle survived a close first-round race with Henry Harrison, where his 6.32/230.17 just beat Henry's 6.33/209. In the semifinals, he improved to 6.21/229.59 in stopping Meyer's Citation at 6.49/219. This put the two Texas cars in the final together. But again, the "Blue Max" team had to settle for the runner-up spot as Beadle's 6.32/202.24 lost to Kenny's 6.21/234. The following week (July 12), things went their way as Beadle beat Meyer to win the IHRA Northern Nationals. Then it was off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where both he and Bernstein qualified with 5.86s. Kenny got the pole while Raymond qualified #2, but his speed of 245.23 was tops for the meet. A first-round 6.11/219.51 beat John Collins, but he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Mike Dunn. The team then went to Brainerd for an eight-car show.In the first round, Beadle's 6.46/222.77 beat Carl Swenson's 6.56/221. He then set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.22/226.70 over Dunn's tire-smoker in the "Hawaiian." He faced Tom Hoover in the final; this time, the "Blue Max" went up in tire smoke and lost. | Craig won Indy and had two runner-up finishes to take his second straight championship. Set mph record. Also, Don was runner up to Paul Stage's AA/C in Super Eliminator (pre-Funny Car Eliminator) at '68 Indy Nationals. - Danny White | Nicholson's early-season '68 car was destroyed in late July in a collision on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Carlisle, according to the 7/26/68 edition of Drag Times. Crewmembers Jim Campbell and Wally English were returning Nicholson's car to Detroit following the Super Stock Nationals. The impact threw the Cougar over the cab and onto the roadway, demolishing it. English was killed in the collision; Campbell was injured but recovered. - RT | The Cougar debuted at a match race in May against Jim Liberman at Capitol. Don lost two transmissions and the match when Jim strapped a 7.66/187.88 on him in the first race and rain kept the next two rounds from being run."Dyno also didn't have too much luck when he showed up for the Cecil Fuel Showdown on May 18. During a time trial run, he broke a timing chain, and he was unable to run in eliminations."Dyno" showed the world that he was still one of the top dogs in Funny Car racing when he showed up at Milan, Michigan on July 7 for a match race against "Fast Eddie" Schartman. Nicholson won all three races. His times were 7.66/184.04 and 7.70/182.18 in the first two races. But he really showed 'em in the last race with his 7.48/185.86. The following week (July 13), he was at Capitol Raceway for its Supercharged Invitational race. In the first round, Malcolm Durham fouled against him at Don advanced with an 8.11/165.74. He lost to Lyle Fisher's 8.19/180 in round two with an ailing 8.36/116.88. But due to the "break rule," he got back into the show for the semifinal. Once again, he faced Fisher. Lyle failed to fire this time, so "Dyno" soloed at 11.66. He met Larry Reyes in the final, and the 'Cuda had him covered, running 7.54/192 for the win over Don's 8.05/181.80 runner-up effort. - Ron Howard

Notes: Consistently fast machine with a stock stroke motor. Won 1977 IHRA Dixie Nationals and World Nationals. Set 245.23 NHRA Record at Martin MI on 8/77. Stood through 1979, at least. Dale ran 6.24 at Pomona, 6.29 at Columbus, 6.36 at Englishtown, and 6.16 at Indy. | If I had to choose the season Pulde was most successful, it was a toss-up between '77 and '85. It would go to this "War Eagle" car for sentimental reasons. Pulde started the '77 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3. A 6.25 in the first round beat Jake Johnston, but he lost to Gary Burgin in round two. He went to the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ran 6.24 to qualify and finished runner-up to Eddie Pauling in Johnny Loper's Monza. The final was very interesting as Pauling had his Monza's fiberglass body come up the chassis, and he ran 13.70. Pulde had been high-tailing his out-of-shape car to an 8.55 but was said to have crossed the centerline and was disqualified. There was almost a fight as crew chief Mike Hamby argued with track personnel and Pauling about the finish. Mike said the car touched the line but did not go over it. Regardless, the decision stood. Another runner-up finish came at Rockingham on May 1 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Dale set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.14/234.37 before losing to Ken Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the final. He won the NHRA Division 3 points race at Indianapolis and the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where he set Low ET at 6.24 before beating Tom McEwen in the final. Another win came his way at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race held there. He beat Chuck Finders in the final with a 6.22/236.22 (Top Speed). His next win came at the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo on June 5. He had beaten Jerry Boldenow and Safford to reach the finals, where he stopped Ray Sherman for the title. Bristol was the team's next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Pulde qualified #2 with a 6.45. Another 6.45 at 227.27 beat Safford in the opening round, and in round two, his 6.39/222.22 beat Denny Savage's 6.42/224. In the semifinals, Dale set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.28/233.76, covering Johnny White's ailing Mustang. He went up against Larry Fullerton in the title round. Fullerton's Mustang broke, and Pulde legged it to 6.30/233.76 for yet another win. It was off to Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals on July 4. A 6.33 qualified #2, but in the first round, he and Fullerton both smoked the tires, with Larry's 8.23/152 winning over Pulde's 9.45/107.91. The following week (July 10), the "War Eagle" was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Pulde only qualified #14 with a 6.36/234.98. In the first round, his 6.46 lost to Sherman's 6.33. Two weeks later, Pulde was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he reset the IHRA Funny Car speed record to 241.28. The funnies were flying here, and Dale qualified #2 with a 6.21. He then beat Shirl Greer and Tom Prock to reach the final, facing Burgin. The two had an amazing race, with Pulde running 6.09/241.28 only to lose to Burgin's 6.08. He made up for his runner-up finish by winning the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Byron Dragway on July 31. He qualified with a 6.80/222 and then set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.37/235.60 (track record). In the final, all he needed was a 6.67/191 to beat a tire-smoking Bill Pryor at 7.22/194. That was followed by a win at Englishtown's Eighth Annual Funny Car Race of Champions on August 4. All ten cars were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Dale ran 6.47/234 to beat Gordon Mineo in his first race, and a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.34/236 beat a fouling Burgin in his second race. His final-round opponent was Arnie Swensen, who had gotten the second-lowest ET with a 6.42. Dale got the victory with another strong run of 6.35/235. A couple of days later (August 7), he was at Atlanta Dragway for the IHRA Nationals. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until the semifinals before the car broke on the line, advancing eventual winner Dale Emery into the final. A week after that (August 14), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where he reset the NHRA Funny Car speed record to 245.23. It was another sixteen-car field, and Pulde set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.00/247.93 over John Pott. He "slowed" to 6.20/240 in round two to beat Ron Colson's 6.52 in the "Hawaiian," and a semifinal 6.13/245.23 beat Bob Pickett's 6.21. In the final, he went up against Burgin. Pulde had difficulties and slowed to a 15.22 in a runner-up finish to Burgin's 6.61/231. Dale qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.29/240.00 at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships on August 21. But he boiled the tires in the second round and lost to Emery, who would win in Mike Burkhart's Camaro.Pulde qualified #8 at Indy for the NHRA U.S.Nationals, but he fell off to 6.56/225.56 in the first round and lost to Al Segrini's 6.39/225.

On March 19, Carlsbad held an eight-car event and 15 FCs attempted to qualify. Jim ran an 8.84 for the #5 spot. He beat low qualifier Steve Bovan in the first round, with a 9.00/164.23. In the semifinal, he ran his best ever (to this point) 8.45/164.23 to beat Fred Goeske in the "Hemi-Cuda." In the final, he was to run Randy Walls, but Walls had blown his transmission in the semis so Liberman soloed for the victory. On April 1, Jim was driving the "Brutus" GTO at a match race against Malcolm Durham at Capitol. He blew the GTO's engine in the second race and he pulled his Nova of the truck to race against Durham in the final race. It paid off as the two had both won a race each and in the decisive last race, the Nova hustled to an 8.75/162.74 for the match race win. Jim ran Schartman at York, Pa., for a match race on April 29. He won the first race with an 8.63/163.04 when Ed lost a rear end. In the second race, Schartman set an 8.17 track record over JJ who lost a transmission. In the third race, Jim wrapped up the match with a blower exploding in the lights pass of 8.54/163.04 that just beat Schartman's 8.54/151. On May 10 he was at Cecil County for the Factory Showdown. He crossed the center line in the first round, on an 8.31/171.10 pass against Jack Chrisman. After his first-round loss, he came out and ran a solo pass of 8.19. It was his best ever to this point. Set Maple Grove track records of 8.29/172.85 on May 13. Also ran a 7.83 Irwindale track record. On May 26 at Gary, Ind., US 30 for the UDRA Championships, ran 8.40/168.59 over Roger Wolford's 8.66/168.54 in the semifinal. - Ron Howard

Notes: Etchells will always be remembered as the first to run a four-second time in an FC. His '96 season was good, as he was always competitive. Chuck qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.46/287.63. He improved to 5.33/252.17 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to John Force's 5.12/296. At Firebird Raceway, for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.05/299.60 qualified second to Force's 5.04/301. A 5.12/295.27 in the first round beat Jim Epler, while he got to run a 5.36/290.69 solo in round two when Chuck Beal failed to show. An off-pace 5.41/289.85 still beat Whit Bazemore in the semi-finals, but fellow finalist force ran 5.14 in his semi-final win. The final saw Chuck slow to a 5.75/186.48 in a runner-up finish to John's 5.19/295. He always seemed to run well at Gainesville, and '96 was no different. A 5.08/306.22 (Top Speed) qualified #3, and he was able to work his way into the final for the second straight race. He started by running a 5.18/294.50 over Gary Densham's 5.21/290. In round two, his 5.15/295.46 stopped Paul Smith's 5.17/285, and in the semi-final, he took out Del Worsham's 5.32/229 with a 5.07/305.18. Once again, the final would come down to Force vs. Etchells, and the results were the same as Force blasted out a track record 4.9301 for the win over Etchells' 5.23/302.01. NHRA's next race was the Supernationals held at Houston at the end of March. Chuck qualified #6 at 5.14/299.70. But he didn't hang around long in eliminations as Mark Oswald's 5.13/287 in round one beat his 5.20/244.96. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was just an eight-car field. It's good that no points were awarded at this race as Etchells failed to qualify. He came off the truck and ran 5.37, but it all went downhill as tire shake did him in. His next three passes were 5.62, 9.13, and 7.68. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 9th at 5.10/303.23. He defeated Paul Smith in round one with an improved 304.25 before falling to John Force in the quarterfinals. He qualified for Big Bud Shootout but dropped round one to Tony Pedregon.

Notes: Former Whipple & McCulloch Cuda. How would you like to go to a drag race and leave with a funny car? That's exactly what Jim Murphy did. He attended the Fremont New Year's race, and Ed McCulloch was there with his new Demon. A deal was struck for Jim to buy his highly successful '71 'Cuda. Go figure; some people are happy with a T-shirt. Since Murphy still didn't have his Funny Car driver's license, the car was driven at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals by Butch Maas. They didn't do too badly, qualifying #2 and going a couple of rounds. Things went even better at the Bakersfield March Meet, where Jim had McCulloch drive, and Ed won the race. In July, Jim qualified #2 at Tri-City Dragway for the fourth NHRA Division 3 race with a 6.59. But his opening round 7.02 lost to Al Marshall's 7.00. Jim was the low qualifier at Ontario at 6.334/231.95 (his best NHRA national event times of the year). He went 6.537 at 220.58 at Indy.

Notes: Raymond won his first championship in 1979. He had two wins and three runner-up finishes. Photo from Byron Dragway's Manufacturer's Meet. Did Raymond run 5.96 somewhere this year? Confirmed 5.996/244.56 NHRA bests at Indy US Nationals 9/79. | Beadle started the season by qualifying #1 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. The team made it into the semifinals before losing to Gary Burgin. At the NHRA Winternationals, they again qualified #1. This time with a 6.07 that held up for Low ET. Beadle then ran 6.18, 6.17, and 6.27 to reach the final to run Tom Hoover. Unfortunately, Raymond smoked the tires and lost to Hoover's 6.29. The "Blue Max" qualified well at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, where a 6.18 qualified #2. Beadle's best run in eliminations was a first-round 6.21, but in round two, a 6.69/226 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" in a twin tire smoker. The "Max" broke in the semifinals, giving Gordie Bonin a free ride into the finals. The team then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where a 6.05/240.00 (Low ET & Top Speed) qualified #1. But in round one, Beadle smoked the tires to a 7.01 loss against Dale Pulde's 6.32. Things went their way at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. There Beadle qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.13. A first-round 6.17 advanced when Frank Oglesby broke, and in the semifinals, a 6.16/233.16 beat Shirl Greer. In the finals, he unloaded a 6.09/238.09 (Low ET & Top Speed) for the win over Paul Smith's runner-up 6.37/190. The NHRA Cajun Nationals featured an eight-car field as well. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.30/234.37. He beat Hoover's 6.44/223 in the first round, with a 6.37/229.00, but in the semifinals, a bad coil wire kept the "Max" from firing, and John Force got a free ride into the final. Raymond made it into the finals at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.13/238.09. In the opening round, another 6.13 at 231.95 beat Dick Rosberg's 6.35/212. In round two, his 6.61/223.88 beat a tire-smoking Jim Adolph. The semifinals saw Raymond make an easy pass when Colson broke on the line. He faced Burgin in the final, but his 6.69/207.37 was good for the runner-up spot to Gary's 6.49/239. The team then went to Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. Both he and Burgin broke in the first round, with Beadle coasting through first for the win. Unfortunately, the "Blue Max" could not run in the semifinals and was replaced by Tom Prock. From there, the team went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Once again, Beadle qualified #2, with a 6.18/234.98. A first-round 6.37 beat Pete Williams' 6.61 in the "Chi-Town Hustler," but a semifinal 6.87 lost to Pulde's 6.49. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in late June, Ray qualified #7 in the eight-car field and then ran a great 6.31 in the first round over Simon Menzies. He made it into the final, where he faced Billy Meyer. The "Blue Max" slowed to an off-pace 6.86 to take the runner-up spot to Meyer's 6.51. Beadle took a win at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown on July 15. He qualified #4 in the show with a 6.18/230.76. He beat Meyer in the first round with a 6.17, and a second-round 6.09/233.16 beat Pulde's 6.11/236. In the semifinals, Raymond's 6.18/235 beat Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's car. In the final, he ran Force's Corvette. Beadle's 6.37/232.55 took his third NHRA National event victory over John's 6.46/212. The team did not race at the NHRA Grandnationals.

Notes: Tim won NHRA Winters with a 5.618/250.69 bests (Tim's best NHRA national event ET for the year). He ran a controversial first 5.40 run at NED one week after Gainesville. Roland Leong witnessed it and said it was a monster. Tim won a $50,000 payday at IHRA Bristol. Tim also tried a combo with header pipes exiting the top hood area directly in front of body A posts at the outside edges of the windshield. Benefit: All kinds of downforce. Problem: Absolutely blinded by header flames when at all dark outside! Photo from Indy 1986. Ran the same paint scheme with Skoal Bandit, Dan Young Chevy, and blank side panels in '86. | After winning the NHRA Winternationals with his Firebird, Tim showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with his new Corvette. He qualified #13 with a 5.95/235.97. In the first round, a 5.97/209.59 lost to John Force's 5.81/247. In April, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.80/246.30. A 5.83/246.03 beat Steve Hodkinson's 5.98/240 in the first round, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.98/83.28 that lost to John Lombardo's 5.93/244 in the "Blue Max" Mustang. Grose qualified well again at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 5.90/236.28 was #7 in the field. A first-round 5.89/231.77 beat Gary Phillips, but another 5.89 at 239.87 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 5.78/249. Tim got another big win at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 and, in the final, met Kenny Bernstein. The "Budweiser King" blew an engine, and Tim ran 5.87/231 for the victory. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.91/245.49. Unfortunately, he lost to Bernstein in the first round. Grose competed at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove. It was an eight-car field, and Tim's 6.05/219.51 qualified #7. He hurt some parts on the run and could not run in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals at the end of June. A 6.09/226.13 qualified #10, and a 6.00/234.98 lost to Force's 5.80/252 in the first round. A week later (July 6), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #4. He beat Scott Kalitta's out-of-shape Mustang in the first round with a 5.94/239.36. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Bernstein. He barely made the show at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, with his 5.90/243.37 holding down the #15 spot. He beat Brad Tuttle in the first round before losing to Force's 5.74 in round two. A couple of weeks later (July 27), he was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #11 with a 6.06/229.00 but lost to Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian" in the opening round. Not sure why he raced his old Firebird at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, but he did well with it there, reaching the semifinals before losing to Bernstein. He was back driving the Corvette when he won the US Funny Car Championships a week later. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.88/241.93, and Tim's final round 5.83/238.76 beat low qualifier Jim Head for the title. Grose's next stop was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.87/250.69, and in round one, his 6.04/237.46 beat Norm Day's on-fire 6.06/238. He went to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, but unfortunately, his 5.92/251.32 best was good for the second alternate. He then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where his 5.82/232.01 qualified #8. In the opening round, his 5.93/220.15 beat Kalitta's 6.07/221, and in round two, he put Paul Smith on the trailer with a 5.97/228.07. But eventual winner Mark Oswald's 5.68/257 in the "Candies and Hughes" car stopped his 6.16/199.91 from advancing in the semifinals. Tim then went to the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Chief Nationals. His 5.74/241.22 qualified #11. He ran 5.73/238.15 in the opening round to defeat Raymond Beadle's 5.79/250 in the "Blue Max." In round two, he fouled and shut off against Oswald. The 251.32 was Tim's best NHRA speed; he typically did not run high MPH numbers.

Notes: This is the Snake's first Buttera car, first raced at '70 Ontario Supernationals. Painted yellow for the remainder of 1970, the white paint job followed in early '71. (This is the car that flew through the lights in Seattle on fire). The white car ran 6.62 at 226 at OCIR in early '71, all-time bests for FCs to that point. Also ran then second quickest ever ET at 6.67 at the Northwest National Open 71. Said to be trying for the sport's first 6.5 when he flew it through the lights on fire. | Don started the '71 season with a runner-up finish at Fremont's New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. He worked his way to the final by beating Charlie Proite's "Telstar" in the first round, with a 7.34/189.06. In round two, a 7.06/214.78 beat Paula Murphy's 7.40/204. The semifinals saw him dip into the sixes with a 6.98/206.42 over Kenney Goodell. In the finals, he ran Gene Snow and Snow set Low ET with a 6.83/212 to take the victory over the "Snake's" 6.99/214.78. On January 10 he was at Lions for the AHRA Grand American. Over 30 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Don's 6.78 was third among the "unseeded" entries. A first-round 6.88/212.26 beat Mart Higginbotham's 7.19/205. Unfortunately, he broke a rear end in the second round and let Leroy Goldstein advance. Prudhomme was at the second OCIR All-Pro event and where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.70. An opening round 6.94/187.89 beat Jim Dunn, but in the semifinals, his transmission locked in reverse giving Gene Conway a solo into the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Don qualified pretty far down the list with a 7.28/187.47 (#14). He broke in the first round, and lost to Stan Shiroma in the "Midnight Skulker." The third OCIR All-Pro event was run on February 13. Prudhomme turned in an amazing performance to win. He qualified for the eight-car field with a 6.96/223.88. In the first round, he improved to 6.82/223.88 to beat Dunn. A semifinal 6.71/225.00 beat Gene Snow's 7.10/169. He ran Dunn again in the final who had gotten back into the show on the "break rule" twice! There was no denying the "Snake" on this day as in the final he ran an unheard of 6.62/226.13 to win. Around this time, Prudhomme had been driving his Top Fuel car as well as the Funny. At a lot of meets, he ran either one or the other. At Bakersfield for the March Meet, he ran his dragster. On March 21 he was at Fresno for a best of three match race against the "Hawaiian," driven by Butch Maas. Butch won the first race with a 7.08/211 over Don's 7.23/214.28, but Prudhomme came back to even things up by winning the second race with a 6.93/211.26 over the "Hawaiian's" 6.99. In the deciding race, Maas won the match with a 6.88 over the "Snake's" quicker 6.85. Due to this match race being run on the same day as the Gatornationals, Prudhomme was obviously not at Gainesville. Everyone remembers the pictures of Don's 'Cuda on fire on two wheels going through the traps at Seattle. That was on April 11 for the Northwest National Open. Don qualified third behind Maas and Jerry Ruth. He blew a clutch in the semifinals while setting Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.67/221.66 over the "Hawaiian." In the final, he again had problems (to put it mildly), and went through the traps on fire to win with a 6.94 over Dave Condit's 6.98 in the "L. A. Hooker." In May, Prudhomme won the Continental Divide Spring Funny Car race. He beat Art Ward in the final with a new track record 7.470. Martin, Michigan, held an eight-car show over the Memorial Day Weekend and Prudhomme ran well. All eight-cars were to make three runs with the winner being determined by the car that got the most wins. Don had problems and was unable to make his first race, but he came back to win his second with a 7.13/200.89 over Richard Tharp's 7.15/198 in the "Blue Max." He really raised some eyebrows in the third race where he beat Gary Dyer with a 6.62/220.58 (Low ET and Top Speed).
