Notes: Tom started his season at the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at OCIR in January. It wasn't a great start as although his 6.45/230 in the first round, of eliminations beat Kenny Bernstein, he kicked a couple of rods out of it, and he was done for the day. His next stop was the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field and, in the first round, lost to low qualifier Gary Burgin. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, McEwen qualified #4 with a 6.08/236.84. Unfortunately, he lost to Hank Johnson in the first round. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He lasted until round two before his early-shut off 7.83/110 lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn's 6.18/227. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.23/229.00. In the first round, he had problems and shut down to a 10.62 loss to Raymond Beadle's 5.99 in the "Blue Max." In April, he was at OCIR for a 64 car show. A first-round 6.23/227.84 lost a close one to Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" at 6.22/235. A runner-up finish followed that at the Seattle Opener. The race was run Chicago-style, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. It was an eight-car show, and he singled with a 6.20/225 in the first round, when Jim Moore broke. In round two, Tom lost to Colson's 6.17 with a quicker 6.15. The times qualified both for the final. The "Mongoose" smoked the tires in the final, and his 6.46/169.81 lost to Colson's 6.15/238. He went to Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race, where he qualified #3 with a 6.09/231.95. However, it rained after qualifying, and the race was postponed. He was unable to come back and run on the rain date. McEwen qualified #11 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.23/234.98. In the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max," who advanced with a 6.21. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Tom set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.49/221.14. But he had a strange first-round race with Larry Gould that saw both cars leave the track. Normally both are disqualified, but for some reason, Gould advanced, and McEwen was out. He failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shortly after that, he was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. His 6.25 qualified #3, and he got to make an easy solo in the first round, when Paul Gordon broke. The old "Hot Wheels" teammates faced each other in the semifinals, and his 6.35/227 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.28/218.

Notes: Anderson was the full-time driver for Jim Wemett in 1982. He moonlighted as the interim Custom Body driver in midseason after Bobby Hilton's departure and before Paul Smith's tenure in the car. Anderson qualified the Custom Body #3 at the NHRA Summernationals with a 5.935 at 245.90 mph and defeated Ken Veney in round one, with a 6.341 to Veney's 6.362. He lost to Gary Burgin in round 2. - David Hapgood | Tom was also driving this car in August when he won the Englishtown Race of Champions event. A quick leaving 6.03 in the final beat Burgin's 5.97. Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Jim was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His best of 6.42 failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to make the show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.87/245.96 best was good for the fourth alternate. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 11 where ten FCs each made two runs and the two lowest ETs met in the final. Jim's first race had his 6.22/231.95 beat Johnny West's 6.23/186 in the "Hawaiian." In his second race, his 6.33/176.81 lost to Gary Densham's 6.13/234. His ETs were not good enough to get into the final. Later that month, he was at Sacramento for similarly run show. Dunn won his first race over a broken Wally Giavia with a 6.08/245.91. In his second race, he ran 5.96/247.84 to beat Jim Murphy's 6.06/228. Unfortunately, once again, his times were not good enough to make the final. Dunn failed to qualify at the NHRA Fallnationals where his 5.92/253.09 was the fifth alternate. Going into the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona, Jim's best ET had been 5.74. But before the race, a new lock-up clutch was installed as well as dual magnetos and fuel pumps. On his first qualifying attempt, he ran 5.71/253.59. The next run was 5.67/258.54 and a final 5.60/267.45 qualified #13. He upset a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein in the opening round with yet another career-best of 5.55 at 266.98, but he lost to Mark Oswald in round two.

Notes: Just before September, Wood replaced his 427 Chevy with a 426 Hemi. He ran at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals and, in the first round, ran a career-best (to this point) of 7.077/206.42 in beating Gene Snow. Ironically, he lost in round two to the only Chevy-powered car to qualify in FC, Bruce Larson. Bruce ran a career-best 7.161/205.94 to beat Wood's 7.220/199.55. On September 20, a match race was run at Southeastern's 900-foot track against Tommy Grove's Cammer-powered Ford Mustang. Wood won the first race with a 5.93, but Grove came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 5.78. He took a win on October 18 at the Atlanta $10,000 meet. He actually lost in the semifinals of the eight-car show when Tommy Smith beat him in his new Duster. Unfortunately for Tommy, his parachute failed and the car crashed off the end of the strip so Wood was reinstated to run against Huston Platt's Camaro for the money. A final round 7.34/204.08 won the event for Bobby.

Notes: On August 14, Tommy was at Englishtown for its Race of Champions. His car failed to fire for his race against Gene Snow in the first round. He came back out later for a consolation race where he ran 6.42/228.42 (Top Speed) to beat Billy Meyer. In September, Grove was at Maryland International for a best of three match race against Al Segrini, who was driving the "Black Magic" Vega. Unfortunately, Grove lost two straight. The car went into a wheelstand in the first race, and Tommy shut down. In the second race, his 6.61/224.42 lost to Segrini's 6.57/220. At the Eighth Annual New England Funny Car Nationals, Grove looked like he was on his way to the win over the 32 car field. In the opening round, his 6.45/225 defeated Arnie Swensen's 6.76/201. In round two, he set Top Speed with his 6.33/228.42 beating Tom Prock's 6.86/193 in the "Custom Body" car. The third round saw Grove set a new track record with his 6.31/225 taking out Kosty Ivanof's 6.48. Unfortunately, the run came at a cost as Grove burned a few pistons. He could not return for the semifinal, and Ivanof replaced him in the field. Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for its Fallnationals. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, the rear end broke on the line against Roger Lindamood. He also raced at the Irwindale Team Funny Car Championships late in October. All cars there were to make three runs, with the two Low ET cars scheduled to mee in the final. Grove did not run quick enough to reach the final. Tommy also ran 6.54 at Englishtown and 6.55/229 at the Epping Grande American event.

Notes: Henry started his season at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified eleventh with a 6.51, but a first-round 6.65/201.34 failed to get past Sush Matsubara's 6.46/211. Harrison was at Fresno Dragway in March for its Race of Champions event. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.88 qualified #7. In the opening round of eliminations, his off-pace 7.21/181 lost to Twig Zeigler's 6.50/220.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1995 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. DNQ with a best of 5.47/274.97. Confirmed 292.39 at Maple Grove '95. Did Gordie run 297.49 this year (if so, it was not at an NHRA national event). | Bonin started his season at the Bakersfield Warm-up event in January. The team had lots of problems and the best they could run was 6.25/151.31. The following week, they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Crew Chief Leonard Hughes was having a rough time getting the car to hook up. A 5.36/273.97 got them into the show in the #15 spot. But an opening round 5.42/247.72 lost to eventual winner Cruz Pedregon's 5.14/285. The NHRA Arizona Nationals went even worse. Hughes was trying out a different engine combination. Gordie made runs of 7.05, 11.59, 5.54, and 6.05. His 5.54/274.30 ended up as the second alternate for the show. The NHRA Slick 50 Nationals was another tough race for the team. Bonin qualified #15 with a 5.56/258.69 and he lost to John Force in the opening round. Gordie qualified #12 at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 5.34/278.81. An opening round 5.39/270.43 beat Gary Clapshaw, but he lost to Chuck Beal in round two. The team eventually got it sorted out and had a pretty good season. Best NHRA national event ET was a 5.137 at the Ennis Fall event.

Notes: Segrini was driving Kosty's car from at least March through June 1973. He was at Lakeland on March 4 for the IHRA Winternationals. Al qualified #11, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.13/193.53 lost to eventual winner Pat Foster's 6.83/205 in the Barry Setzer Vega. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.58/225.00 qualified #11. The car lost fire on the line in the first round, advancing Ed McCulloch. Al was at Englishtown in April for an eight-car show. A first-round 6.68/219.51 beat Tom Prock's 7.08/181 in the "Custom Body" car, but he had trouble keeping the front wheels on the ground in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. He was really running well at the second NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail. He only qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but his 6.76 in the first round, beat #2 qualifier Dale Emery driving the "Jeg's" Camaro. That time was good enough for Low ET, but he stepped it up even further in the semifinals when he tied the track ET record with a 6.65 at 218.97 (Top Speed) while beating Bill Leavitt. Unfortunately, he had troubles in the final and lost to Russell Long, driving Charlie Proite's Charger. Al was at Connecticut for its 13th annual Memorial Day Championships. He set Low ET at 6.60 and finished runner-up to Leavitt. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals (times not reported). The following weekend (June 17), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he reached the second round before he lost to Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." On July 4, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He won his first-round race but lost to Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" car in the semifinals.

Notes: Gene was in Tucson in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.80/212. In the first round, he crossed the centerline while racing Jim West and was disqualified. He was reinstated for round two when West's Vega broke. This time Snow's 7.13 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.92. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.27/223.88 qualified #8. He beat Topper Kramer with a 6.41/220.04 and Jake Johnston with a 6.62/212.76 before fouling against Ed McCulloch. Gene won the AHRA Show-Me Nationals at Kansas City International in April. It was an eight-car show, and Snow's 6.31 in the first round beat Bob Pickett's 6.47 in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. He set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.26 that stopped "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.55. In the final, Tom Hoover lost oil pressure and shut off while Snow ran 7.71/117.80 for the victory. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals at LaPlace Dragway, Snow qualified #5 in the eight-car field. He got out of shape and shut off in the first round, losing to low qualifier and eventual winner Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max." He almost won the next AHRA race as well, the Okie Nationals at Tulsa. Gene qualified #3 with a 6.81. He reached the finals, running a best of 6.74/201.78 in a semifinal solo. He faced Dale Emery driving Mike Burkhart's Monza. Snow ran 6.76/187.50, but it was good for the runner-up spot to Emery's 6.57/217. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit Dragway. There he stopped Hoover in the final. His next stop was at St. Louis in June for the AHRA Springnationals. Once again, he ran well, beating Eddie Pauling, driving Johnny Loper's "Little Hoss" Monza in the first round, with a 6.56/195.23. Tom McEwen smoked the tires in the semifinals, and Gene's 6.61/209 advanced. He faced Hoover in the final, but he smoked the tires and shut off to 16.38 while Tom's 6.53 won. The following weekend (June 13), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.74 failed to qualify (fourth alternate). He then went to Byron for its Manufacturer's Meet. In the opening round, his 6.75/182.18 beat Gary Bolger in the "Golddigger." In round two, Gene's 6.69/186.33 fell to the eventual winner, Don Prudhomme's 6.37/221. In July, Green Valley Raceway hosted the AHRA Nationals, and everyone felt that the clocks were "off." Six cars qualified with 6.2's or less, and Snow's car was sixth. He lost early in eliminations. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, he ran 6.57 to qualify #13. He beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the first round before getting crossed-up in round two and shutting down to 10.25 in a loss to Prudhomme's 6.33. At the end of July, he was at OCIR for the final PDA race. He didn't reach the final but had run 6.55 and 10.86. | He was also at the overcast 64 FCs at SIR in August, losing the reverser and driving back to the line in round 1. - Joe Moore

Darrell qualified #14 at Gainesville in the Trans Am at 5.737/254.30. In round one, he lost to Don Prudhomme, 5.55/267 to 5.789/259.59. He qualified #12 for the IHRA Texas Nationals in April with a 5.63/264.86. He improved to 5.472 in the first round before falling off to 5.53/257.28 in round two and losing to Tripp Shumake's 5.43/258. Darrell qualified #13 at Atlanta with a 5.937/254.59. In round one, he lost to Jim Head, 5.65/253 to 5.889/246.44. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 5.80/255.97 qualified #6 in the eight car field. In the opening round, the car broke and slowed to 6.96/139.10 in a loss to Head's 5.98/245. In Memphis, Darrell qualified on the bump at 5.837/260.34. In round one, he lost to Tim Grose, 5.62/258 to 6.236/186.14. He qualified #13 at Baton Rouge (only 13 cars showed) at 6.074/238.15. Don Prudhomme got to him again in round one, 5.49/267 to 5.920/248.55. Despite losing early at the Cajun Nationals, he sat in ninth spot at this time in NHRA FC points. He wasn't far behind Tom Hoover (1,856 to 1,725 in point) who sat eighth in points. In the second week of July, he was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.80 qualified #6, and in the first round, his engine-blowing 7.88/107 lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch's 5.75. Darrell was also on the bump spot at Brainerd, qualifying at 6.089/221.62. In round one, he improved to 5.979/233.16 but lost to Scott Kalitta's 5.59/262. In mid-September, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. His 5.96/222.77 qualified #7 for the eight car show and he lost early in eliminations. Darrell was the second alternate at the Houston Supernationals at 5.804/241.87. He skipped several events and raced at the World Finals. He was the fifth alternate at 5.805/221.83 but we think that was in his Ambition Corvette because Whit Bazemore had the former Ted Combis car and also DNQ'd at 6.005/221.67. We need confirmation of that. Photo from the 1988 IHRA Winternationals, Darlington, South Carolina.

Notes: Howell was at Rockingham on April 19 for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was the third AHRA Grand American race. He was the low qualifier for AHRA's "seeded" entries with a 7.35. His 7.52 defeated Malcolm Durham in round two, and in the semifinal, his 7.57 stopped Clyde Morgan. In the final, he faced Gene Snow, and Snow had run 7.16 while winning his semifinal race. Jay really needed to pick it up. However, it was not in the cards as Snow got the victory with a 7.14 with an early shut-off speed of 168 while Howell ran 7.45/193.54 for the runner-up honors. Jay drove this car at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. He beat Dick Harrell in the first round, with a 7.82/170 and in round two a 7.69/185.56 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.84/181. The "Snake" got back in on the "break rule." The two were to race again in the semifinal, but Howell blew his transmission on the burnout. Prudhomme advanced and went on to win the event. Jay was the Shop Foreman at Logghe Stamping Co. AKA Warhorse. Ran 7.15/199.87 in win at AHRA Detroit race.

Notes: Larry was the low qualifier at Gainesville for the first NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.17/203.65. He beat Sid Foster in the first round, but his 7.21 lost to Larry Reyes' 7.10 in the second "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals. Shortly after that, he was at Miami-Hollywood for an eight-car show. An opening round 7.49/192.71 beat Leonard Hughes' very close 7.49/199, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a 7.80/184.04 that lost to eventual winner Clare Sanders' 7.74/191. On April 5, he won over an eight-car field at Kansas City. Arnold ran times on 7.40/187, 7.37/197, and finally, a track record 7.30/199 to win. | He also ran 7.19 at KCIR on another date. The best NHRA times were the 7.176/203.65 at Gainesville. Where was the 7.08 run? Larry also ran 6.11 at Dallas, GA (900 feet).

Notes: Johnny White debuted his new Mustang II in March at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He did pretty well, considering it was its first time out. White qualified in the top half of the field (#6) at 6.412/182.92, and an opening round 6.84/200.00 beat Stan Bowman, who smoked the tires. But in round two, the car broke, which advanced his opponent, Don Prudhomme. John was at LaPlace Dragway later in March for the NHRA Division 4 opener. He set Low ET at 6.41 and in the final, his 6.54 beat Larry Fullerton for the victory. John was at Tulsa in May for the AHRA Okie Nationals, where he lasted until round two before his quicker 6.80/206.88 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.95/219. His next stop was back at LaPlace for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #3 with a 6.72/202.24. He blew a rear end in the first round, but was still able to beat Randy Lackey, who had gotten out of shape and shut off. Unfortunately, he lost to Dale Emery in the semifinals. White lost early in eliminations at Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. He ended the month of May by winning Houston's Spring Funny Car Festival race on the 31st. He had Low ET in qualifying with a 6.79 and then ran 7.30/186 over Mike Young and 7.23/191 over Jerry Jefferson to reach the final. There he faced Paul Smith, who fouled and sent John to a 6.92/193 victory. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.789/216.34 was the fifth alternate. John was the low qualifier at IHRA Bristol with a 6.40/205.94. He also ran 6.50 at Riverside Raceway WWCS 1976. John qualified #15 at Indy at 6.267/216.34 and lost a close one to Ed McCulloch in round one, 6.28/234 to 6.339/225.56. He was the third alternate at NHRA Seattle at 6.808/197.80 and was the second alternate at NHRA Ontario at 6.480/217.39.

Notes: Chrisman started the year at Lions for the AHRA Funny Car meet on January 28. It didn't go too well. He qualified 31 with a 9.90/154.90 and lost a motor on the line in round one. He ran 8.40 to qualify 13th on February 24, again at Lions, and ran 8.09/180.00 to win his first-round race. An 8.11/176 failed to beat Fred Goeske in the second round. The following day at Carlsbad, he had injection problems and couldn't run, giving Dick Loehr a single. Chrisman was at Lions on March 30, where all fourteen cars made three runs. His 9.14/145.11 lost to Bob Pickett's 9.10/109 when both cars got out of shape in his first race. Motor trouble kept him from making a second run, and on the third, his ailing Comet lost to Johnny Wright's 8.41/160. After doing a stint with Hayden Proffitt's Rebel, Amos Satterlee came back as the chief mechanic. On April 7, Jack ran a best of 8.06/182.18 and finished runner-up to Fred Goeske at the Carlsbad Funny Car Championships. A first-round loss to Dick Harrell's 8.17 to Chrisman's 8.32 followed on May 4 at OCIR. An 8.02/151.50 qualified him second at Lions on May 18, but the pass cost him as a timing chain broke, and he bent some valves. As a result, he was unable to race. He was at Tulsa on June 9 for a best-of-three-match race against Don Gay. Jack lost the first race to the Pontiac, but he ran a strong 7.64 to win over Gay, who lost a motor in the second race. Gay could not return for the third race, so Jack soloed for the match race victory. At Irwindale on June 22, Jack lost to Dee Keaton in the second round. Jack was at Irwindale on August 17 for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. There were four of each that were to race round-robin. In his first race, he ran 8.13/179.28, but it wasn't strong enough to beat Gary Reed's 7.69/204 in the "Groundshaker."In the second race against Sush Matsubara, the Comet broke at 1/8 track and lost to Sush's 9.47/163. The car could not run the last race, and Willie Borsch filled in for him. A big win at Lions on October 12 followed with his 7.98/177.86 dropping Dale Pulde in the final. He almost pulled it off again on November 16 at Lions, where he qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 7.97/185.44. He then ran two 7.88's at 185.56 and 181.08 to beat Ronnie Runyon twice(Ronnie had gotten back into the show on the "break rule"). That got him into the final against Jim Liberman. Jack had to shut off on the line with a leaking transmission. He also raced at the OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. It was his last season running a Comet.

Notes: Dunn started his season at OCIR for its Grand Premiere race. It was an eight-car show that had all eight cars make two runs, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. He and Kenny Bernstein both got out of shape and shut off in their first race, and Mike crossed the stripe first with a 16.11. In the second race, he had to shut down again when the "Hawaiian" went up in smoke. He lost to Trip Shumake's 6.65. Mike attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.493/233.16 (fourth alternate) failed to make the show. After qualifying second, he won the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.08/240.00 behind John Force's 6.03/237. He set Low ET in the first round while beating his dad with a 6.00/240.64 to Jim's 6.19/241. A 6.07/240.4 in the semifinal defeated Tim Grose's 6.26/223. In the final, he beat Henry Harrison with a 6.04/238.09. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 5.93/245.90. A 5.879/247.25 beat Billy Meyer in the first round, and he advanced into the semifinals when Force fouled against him in round two. But in his semifinal race, Mike's 6.06/233.76 lost to Frank Hawley's 5.94/240 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The "Hawaiian" team was at OCIR for its 64 Funny Car race in April. There were 22 FCs, and all made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Unfortunately, his 6.05/243.24 time in his first race lost to Shumake's 5.93/233 in Joe Pisano's car, and his 6.32/230.76 over Bruce Iverson in his second race was still nowhere near quick enough to qualify for the final. The following weekend(April 9), OCIR did it again; they held another race run in the same format. Dunn still didn't reach the final, but he won both his races. A 6.27/234.37 beat Gary Densham in the first race, and his 6.24233.76 beat Mert Littlefield in the second one. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 6.05/243.90 best was the second alternate. Early in May, the team made a stop at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Mike's 6.81 qualified #6. In the opening round, his 6.53/230.17 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.22/236. In mid-June, things went bad at Columbus during the running of the NHRA Springnationals. Mike had the throttle stick wide open during qualifying, and the car's supercharger exploded. The car then went up in flames, and Dunn drove into the "catch net" at around 130mph. The right rear slick had blown out and the body shredded upon impact with the net. Mike was ok, but the car was wrecked. Car owner Roland Leong immediately purchased Steve Chrisman's BB/FC Omni for racing the following week. Mike ran his best NHRA speed while qualifying at the World Finals. Unfortunately, he crashed on the run and could not compete.

Notes: Gordie was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #9. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's Mustang. Unfortunately, Bonin's engine let go, and he had a major fire just off the line. He was OK. The damage was minimal, and the team repaired it in time to make it to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Gordie ran 6.410/233.16 (Top Speed) to qualify #11. A first-round 6.545/227.84 lost to Mike Miller's 6.43/220 in the "Green Elephant." At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, Bonin qualified #2 with a 6.30/233.76 behind Don Prudhomme's amazing 6.08/235. A 6.46/223.88 in the first round lost to Jake Johnston's 6.29/225. On March 16, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin continued to qualify well, running 6.437/230.17 for the #4 spot in the field. A first-round 6.678/225.00 lost to Tom Prock's 6.62/224. At the Seattle Opener, Bonin beat Jerry Ruth's Mustang in the first round, with a 6.56/220.58, but in his second race, he went into a wheelstand and shut off, losing to Ed McCulloch's 6.27/218. Bonin was back in Seattle in June for the second Olympia All-Pro Series race. An opening round 6.54/224.43 beat Bill Spevacek's off-pace 7.87/138, and in the semifinals, Gordie ran 6.66/227.27 to beat Mike Miller's 6.84/211 in the "Green Elephant" car. He faced Twig Zeigler in the final, and Bonin took the victory with a track record speed of 230.17 coupled with an ET of 6.32 over Twig's 6.56/229 runner-up effort. Gordie qualified #3 at NHRA Columbus with a 6.472/220.04. He beat Bob Pickett in round one, 6.990/216.34 to 10.35/68. Shirl Greer beat him in round two, 6.53/206 to a 9.59 shut-off. On June 29, he was at Edmonton International for the NHRA Division Six race. Things did not go well there as he lost fire on his burnout in the first round, giving Ken McLean a solo. Things went better at Bremerton for the next NHRA Division Six race. A 6.69 qualified #1; in round one, his 6.82 beat Larry Palmer. He smoked the tires in the semifinals, but his 7.14 was still enough to beat Don Rae's 7.86. He faced Miller in the final and got a 6.61 victory over the "Elephant's" 6.97. He was running a new Schiefer clutch setup rather than the conventional Crower glide. He ran a 6.432/217 best at the PHR US 131 race, losing to Denny Savage. At NHRA Sanair, Gordie qualified #6 at 6.62/213.27 but lost to Tom Prock in round one, 6.54/216 to 6.67/217.39. Gordie was the seventh alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.560/227.27. He qualified #14 at Seattle at 6.980/195.22 and lost to John Lombardo in round one, 6.86/196 to 7.255/216.34. Gordie ended the year with a fourth alternate effort at Ontario. We don't have those times, but the third alternate was Paul Smith at 6.439.

Notes: Strongest Chevy-powered Funny of '69. Ran a 7.60/191.88 at Englishtown in March. Set a 187.50 Maple Grove track record. On April 13, Larson faced Frank Oglesby for a match race at Cecil County. Bruce's 7.79/191.48 won the first race of the match when Frank's Cougar broke. Bruce made a second-round single to win the match when the Cougar couldn't be repaired in time. Another match race was run in April at US 131, Martin, Mich., against Ed Schartman. A first-round 8.29/187.88 beat Ed's 8.42/172.41. Larson had transmission problems in the second round, and Ed's 8.37/173.41 won. In the third round, Larson won to take the match. In May, he raced at Capitol's Mr. Chevrolet Invitational but fouled against Mel Perry in the first round. On May 24, he raced Schartman's second car driven by Arnie Behling at Suffolk for a match race. Larson beat Arnie two straight with runs of 7.80/154.10 and 7.56/180.00 to win the match. He was at Cecil County the next day for their Funny Car Manufacturers Meet. Bruce set a track record 7.46 at 193 (Top Speed), but he didn't make it past the first round as he fouled against Jim Liberman. Bruce cracked off the 7.33 at Budds Creek, Maryland, on May 30. It was during a six-car show that he set the track record. He won his first-round race with a 7.95/187.88 over Schartman's 8.11/178. In the semifinals, he ran the 7.33/189.46 to beat Liberman's 7.92/185. This put him into the final against Lew Arrington in the "Brutus." A final round 7.84/187.88 won when Lew got crossed up and shut off to 9.16/157. In June, he returned to Maple Grove for another match race with Schartman. This time, he beat Ed three straight with a best of 7.69/187.88 for the track speed record. On June 8, he ran at the New England Funny Car Championships, where a first-round single (7.98) advanced when Pete Gates lost fire on the line. In the second round, Liberman's 7.61/190 beat his off-pace 8.22/189. Another match race against Schartman was run at York US 30 on June 21. A big holeshot by Ed in the first race gave the Cougar a 7.86/182 win over Larson's quicker 7.62. Bruce lost fire on the line, so Ed raced the backup car of Al Graeber and won, giving him the match race win, but Larson wanted a final attempt at a win, so they lined up for a final race. Sure enough, Larson got out of shape, and Ed's 7.95/180 gave him three straight victories. Bruce did much better the following week on June 28 at Budds Creek, Maryland, where he beat Charlie Allen two straight. At Capitol's King of King's Funny Car race on July 16, Roy Gay's 8.03/179.28 beat his out-of-shape 8.11/180.72 in the first round. At the Cars Magazine Funny Car Nationals on July 20, a first-round 7.61/189.46 beat Ron Rivero (7.72/190.66), but in the second frame, Arrington's 7.50/192 beat Bruce's 7.77/171.16. A big win came at Sunset Dragway's fifth annual Funny Car Championships, where he set a 5.09 eighth-mile track record before beating Schartman in the final of the ten-car field. A match race against Jim Liberman was run on August 2 at York US 30, where Jim beat him two straight with two 7.56s at 191. Bruce's best was a 7.65/189. At the US Nationals, he was the top qualified Chevy with a 7.43/195.22 (qualifying sixth). He had the Chevy fans screaming when his first-round 7.43/194.38 advanced when Schartman fouled. He upset Don Schumacher, who lost a transmission in the second round with a 7.35. The fans were on their feet for the semifinal race between him and Danny Ongais. But Larson fouled away a 7.48; Ongais' 7.27 would've been hard to beat anyway. On September 21 at Epping for the New England Funny Car Championships, Paul Stefansky's 7.70/175 beat him in round two when Bruce lost third gear. On October 26, he won at Connecticut over an eight-car field, setting a 7.42 track record. He ran 7.42/194.38 and 7.50/196.50 before beating the Super' Cuda in the final with a 7.48/196.50. - Ron Howard | Ted Pappacena photo of the modern recreation of the car.

Notes: The "Hawaiian" team showed up with the new Omni at Pomona. Colson qualified #11 with a 6.15/239.99. His 6.29/233.16 advanced when Raymond Beadle went into a wheelstand in the "Blue Max" and shut off in the first round. In round two, he beat Tom Hoover and, in the semifinals, a 6.34 beat Kosty Ivanof's out-of-shape 7.21. In the final, he faced Dale Pulde. Colson got out of shape and crossed the centerline, giving Pulde the victory. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Ron qualified #10. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.36/210.77 when the second qualifier Tripp Shumake had his steering go out. He got out of shape in round two and shut off against Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's Arrow. Ron was at the Seattle Opener in April. The race featured an eight-car fuel Funny Car show, and Colson won the event. In the final, he beat Tom McEwen with a 6.15/238.09; his final round numbers were good for Low ET and Top Speed. On April 27, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Ron qualified the "Hawaiian" #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.09/242.58. A 6.13/242 beat Dale Armstrong in the first round, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Paul Smith in Larry Coogle's "Sting." He was runner-up to Don Prudhomme at the Olympics of Drag Racing race at Union Grove. At the NHRA Springnationals, Colson qualified #1 with a 6.12/239.36 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, Prudhomme had a lousy time in qualifying and only qualified ninth, setting up a first-round meeting between the two. The "Snake" picked up to a 6.08/222 to get the win over the "Hawaiian's" 6.20/237.46. A the NHRA Summernationals, Ron qualified with a 6.085. That was his best time until the Indy 6.000 in the new Corvette. Did the team run 6.032 somewhere this year? (It was not run in either the Omni or the Corvette at an NHRA national event).

Notes: Stan Bowman really ran well in '76. He qualified #14 at the NHRA Gatornationals at 6.539/223.88 but smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to Johnny White, 6.84/200 to 11.65/73. He won the NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga, where his final round 6.69/191.89 beat George Johnson, who smoked the tires to a 7.78/201 runner-up effort. Earlier, he set Low ET with his 6.60/191.89 run in the semifinals. Stan qualified #1 at the Beech Bend Divisional race with a 6.30 before beating John Austin's 6.51/199 in the final with a 6.357/205.47. He qualified on the "bump" at Indy with a 6.269/223.32, but in the first round, a 6.448/205.94 lost to Tom Prock's 6.24/223. Still, just qualifying at the US Nationals was a big deal as 40 cars attempted to make the show.
