Notes: The 1969 Chi-Town Hustler Dodge Charger was legendary for its long smoking burnouts and its tough performance. The team claimed that the car had a 90 percent win-loss record in 1969. Minick did the driving, Austin Coil tuned the engine, and John Farkonas was the behind the scenes engineer. The car was built with an offset roll cage for the driver, one of the last funny cars to be built in that configuration. The Hustler ran a best of 7.02 at 206.42, but also ran 7.08, 7.10, and two 7.12s at five different tracks. As tough as the car was in 1969, it became outdated by 1971 and a new car had to be built. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories.) | Minick's 7.02 was run at Union Grove late in '69. He had set the Union Grove track record in August at 7.32/205.46. In September, he reset it to a 7.2, then came the 7.02 late in the year. The 7.2 at Union Grove in September came with a speed of 209.30. Since the car debuted, it became the car to beat in late '69, setting track records everywhere it ran. | At the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Michigan, the team ran well, running a first-round track record 7.33 at 201.78 over Lew Arrington's 7.48/196, and a second round 7.42/200.89 beat Dean LaPole who lost a transmission. In the semifinals, he set Top Speed with a 7.49/202.24 to beat Dick Loehr's 7.54/191. In the final, he met Fred Goeske's Road Runner and the Chi-Town car was favored to win based on ETs, but Pat ran his slowest run of the race, a 7.52/200.88 and lost to Fred's holeshot-aided 7.71/189. He reset the record again at US 131 on August 30. A first-round 7.13/205.46 got both ends of the record while beating Pete Gates. Unfortunately, on the record-breaking pass he hurt the motor and was unable to make the semifinals. The following day (August 31), he broke both ends of the track record at Minneapolis where an eight-car show was being run. A first-round 7.51/201.34 beat Herman Lesmeister's 'Cuda at 8.50/188 and a semifinal 7.40/200 beat Bryan Teal. In the final, he set two track records of 7.29/202.70 to win over Roger Lindamood who lost a transmission. On October 25, Minick reset the Lions track record to a 7.12 at 205.01 during the East/West Championships. A first-round 7.24/199.55 beat the Invader, but a 7.28/201.34 lost to Rich Siroonian's 7.29/198.23 in the second round. The team didn't do so well at Sears Point for the North/South Championships, having a bad oil fire there. - Ron Howard

Notes: Don Schumacher yellow Cuda. Car 1 of 3 car team. Don ran really well in '72. His season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until round two, where he got out of shape and clicked it off in a loss to Gene Snow. His next stop was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.89, but he had problems in the opening round and lost to Roger Lindamood. Schumacher was at Lakeland early in March for the IHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #5 with a 6.91. He beat Paul Aray's Maverick in the first round, with a 7.14, but in round two, the 'Cuda broke a rear-end giving eventual winner Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max" a solo into the semifinals. The following week (March 12) found the team at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, the gremlins persisted, and he broke in the first round, against Henry Harrison, who was driving Mickey Thompson's Vega. It was then off to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Don's 6.80 qualified #5 and a first-round 6.79/196 beat Lindamood. In the second round, he smoked the tires to a 7.09/161 loss to Pat Foster's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.52/225 in the Barry Setzer Vega. Another round two loss came at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, where he lost to Dale Pulde driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. The trend continued at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals. He only qualified #13 with a 7.41. Schumacher stopped a blower-popping Charlie Therwhanger in the first round, but his off-pace 7.72 in round two lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.90. At the NHRA Springnationals, it was more of the same. A 6.80 qualified #4, and he beat Al Marshall in the "Tyrant" in the opening round with a 6.88/198, but as usual, a second-round 7.16/168 lost to Butch Maas' 6.74/203. Finally, the following week (June 18), he won at Bristol. Traction wasn't great as 26 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and none got into the "sixes." Don's 7.24 qualified #4, and he picked up to 7.09/211.76 in the first round, to beat Fritz Callier in the "CKC" Vega. It was probably a relief when he beat Dave Mudrack driving the "Warhorse" in round two with a 7.12/204.54. He cracked the "sixes" in the semifinals with a 6.99/214.28 over Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car. But final round opponent Jim Paoli driving the "Ramchargers" car, had run a 6.97 in his semifinal race, so it was close. Sure enough, the two had a good race down to the wire with the "Shoe's" 7.01/206.42 getting the victory over the "Rams'" 7.07/215. A few days later, he won over an eight-car field at Union Grove, where he set both ends of the track record with a 6.47/227 (I hope I got this right as reporters often saw Schumacher's name on the side of the car and assumed that it was him. Bobby Rowe liked to drive it out the back door, but the report claimed it was Schumacher). Another win followed this one at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Don qualified #5 with a 6.64 and an improved 6.57 beat the "Ramchargers" car, which Clare Sanders was now driving. In round two, Ron Potter fouled against him, and in the semifinals, he beat 1972's "killer car," the "Trojan Horse" driven by Larry Fullerton. In the first two rounds, the car had just run 6.40/228 and 6.56/225. But Larry's off-pace 7.37/212 lost to Don's 6.63/214.79. In the final, he faced another "killer car" of the '72 season, the Demon of Ed McCulloch. Ed "slowed" to a 6.84/217 in the final after earlier running as quick as 6.51, and Schumacher picked up the win with a 6.63/213.76. The following weekend (July 22), he was at Martin Michigan for an eight-car show. McCulloch got a bit of payback there as he beat Schumacher in the first round. The next day they were at Rockford for the Manufacturer's Meet. Don had run some good times, such as 6.72 (over Fullerton) and 6.78 (over Tommy Grove), and the final came down to McCulloch and him. Once again, McCulloch got the measure of Don with a 6.87/217 beating his 7.01/215.82. Don ran 6.657/219.51 at the Tulsa PRA race. Formerly listed 220.00 for Don's best speed, if it turns out that the Union Grove 227 was Rowe.

Notes: Chuck didn't race at the first two NHRA events of '92, but he was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. He debuted his new sponsor, Nobody Beats the Wiz. His associate sponsors included Snap-On Tools, Mopar Performance, and Mothers. Other major sponsors included Superwinch and Kendall GT-1. At Houston, his 5.37/276.58 qualified #9 for the show. In the first round, an even better 5.26/272.47 lost to a quicker, leaving Cruz Pedregon at 5.29/252. Cruz would go on to win his first win in NHRA Funny Car competition. Etchells then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.28/274.55. A first-round 5.23/281.60 beat Tom Hoover, but he again fell to a Pedregon holeshot in round two. This time Cruz's 5.21/285 stopped his 5.17/281.77. The next stop was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car show, and Chuck's 5.35/272.89 qualified #4. He beat Paul Smith in the opening round with a 5.37/273.05, and a semifinal 5.40/261.02 beat Freddie Neely. He faced Mark Oswald in the final, and Etchells slowed to 5.50/235.23 in a runner-up finish to Oswald's 5.33/279. NHRA's next race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 5.27/270.75 qualified #5 and another 5.27 at 266.35 beat a tire-smoking Jim Epler in the first round. In the second round, Oswald broke a rear end, and Etchells' 5.30/273.30 advanced. In the semifinals, eventual winner John Force ran 5.22/265 to beat his 5.31/251.53. The NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis was next on the calendar, and Chuck's 5.35/274.64 qualified #7. He beat Hoover in round one, with a 5.37/275.48, but he lost to Al Hofmann in round two. At NHRA's seventh race of the season, the Springnationals at Columbus, Etchells grabbed his first pole of the year with a 5.23/279.85. He continued to look tough in the first round, where his 5.26/275.56 beat Gary Litton. In round two, he beat Whit Bazemore with a 5.28/271.16. But in the semifinals, he lost a close race with Hofmann. Etchells' quicker 5.26/278.89 lost to Al's 5.28/273. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran 5.51/259.59 to qualify #8. Unfortunately, in the opening round, an off-pace 5.93/197.32 lost to Del Worsham's 5.64/266.

Notes: LOW and mean. The OCIR 6.01 made Beadle the second quickest Funny Car in the sport after Prudhomme's 5.98 at Ontario 1975 and 5.97 at Indy 1976. | Beadle started the season at the OCIR Opener in January. The car ran great, hitting 6.18/228 in the first round, over Tommy Ivo and a semifinal 6.13 to advance to the final. There he beat Ed McCulloch with his track record 6.01 at 234.37. It was an excellent start to the year. He then went to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #12 with a 7.61. The track was terrible, and Tom Hoover qualified #1 with a 6.73. But the "Blue Max" crew got "her tuned up" in the first round, where his 6.52/223.88 beat Jim West. Beadle set Low ET in round two with a 6.48 to beat Steve Harris, but in the semifinals, the rear-end let go, and Beadle lost to eventual winner John Collins. Then it was off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.18/232.55 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.14. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, with a 6.15/231.95, and a round two 6.27 beat Hoover's quicker 6.19. Another good light in the semifinals made his 6.41 a winner over Gordie Bonin's 6.40. This put Beadle into the final against Prudhomme. It looked like the "Blue Max" faltered in the final, but it was really just the "Snake" running a great 6.03/247 for the win while Beadle had to settle for the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Raymond ran 6.31 to qualify #3. He improved to 6.28/228 on a second-round solo when Al Bergler broke, but he lost to Bonin in the semifinals. The team did not run the IHRA Winternationals, and while the "Max" did not reach the finals at the IHRA Dixie Nationals, Beadle was the low qualifier. Raymond was also the low qualifier at the AHRA Springnationals with a 6.57/218.44. He beat Jim White and Tom Hovland before losing to Billy Graham in the semifinals. The team was at Union Grove for the Drag Racing Olympics race on May 29 and 30. The show was run with 22 cars running the first-round, with the four lowest ET's advancing into the semifinals. Beadle's 6.33 was good enough to advance, but he lost to McEwen in the semis. The following day (May 30), they did it again, but the "Max" failed to qualify for the semifinals this time. Surprisingly, they skipped running the NHRA Cajun Nationals in favor of the AHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis, as the races were run on the same weekend (June 5). It was an eight-car field, and Beadle qualified on the "bump" with a 6.59/220.59. But the car came alive during eliminations, running 6.35/229.01 in the first round, to beat Graham and a 6.46/210.78 over Prock's 6.53/213 in the semifinals. He faced Collins in the finals, and Raymond's 6.53/223.52 got the victory over John's tire-smoking 7.13/181. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 and lost to Prudhomme in the first round. Beadle won the second PDA race held at Fremont on June 23. There he stopped John Lombardo in the final. He then won the third NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley. He qualified #2 with a 6.31 and a final round 6.43/191 beat Gordon Mineo's off-pace 7.95/103. The team skipped the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown as the weekend before the team used up three aluminum engines. The team got things sorted out, and they ended the month of July by winning Portland's 32 car show on the 31st. Beadle had set Low ET, and in the final, his 6.35 beat Mike Miller's 6.39. Beadle could not get the "Max" to run a number at Firebird Raceway for the Night Fire 500 race. He smoked the tires and shut off in both his races losing to Bonin and Hank Johnson. A week later (August 19), the car ran right as Beadle won the Division 6 final at Portland. He beat Rich Rogers, driving the "Green Elephant" in the opening round with a 6.43/211.76. A semifinal 6.39/209.30 beat Jim Dunn, and he faced the Low ET car of Bonin in the final. Beadle got out first, and his 6.34/227.84 hung on to win over Bonin's slightly quicker 6.33/225. He then went to Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Beadle qualified #3 in the eight-car field and then proceeded to run 6.45/212.26 over Bob Pickett and a motor-saving 7.29/141.06 solo when Bonin failed to hear the call for the semifinals. He faced Tom Hoover in the final, and Beadle's 6.53/214.73 finished runner-up to Hoover's 6.40/215. After the team's northern swing, they returned to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where a 6.22/226.13 qualified a disappointing #14. A first-round 6.20/228 by Tom McEwen sent the 6.45/200.44 of Beadle packing for home.

Notes: First year for Castrol, and first year for NHRA National event wins. Photo from Columbus 1987. Also ran 5.453 at same Ennis race. | John started the season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing race at Firebird Raceway on January 18. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.79, a tenth behind Kenny Bernstein. In the first round his 5.87/244.56 beat Gary Densham, who went into tire shake and shut off. In the semifinals, he improved to 5.73/247.93 to beat a tire smoking Tom McEwen. This put him into the final against Bernstein. Kenny had run 5.72 in his semifinal race and had lane choice. The two had a good race, but Force ran his best of the meet, a 5.70/252.80 to win, while Bernstein made his worse run, a 5.78/243. Things did not go so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. John blew up two superchargers in qualifying, finally getting a 5.67/260.94 run in for the #9 spot in the field. He faced low qualifier Bernstein in the first round, and lost when his third supercharger exploded. Things looked to be going in the same direction at the NHRA Gatornationals when once again a blower exploded in qualifying, but crew chief Austin Coil got it figured out and John qualified #6 with a 5.66/254.59. A first-round 5.62/261.24 advanced when Jerry Caminito fouled, but in round two, his 5.69/257.58 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.58/265.

Notes: In 2002, Force became only the third motor sports driver to hit 100 career wins, joining NASCAR stars Richard Petty and David Pearson. This win also gave Force a victory in a record 16 consecutive seasons. Prior to Force, Bob Glidden held the drag racing record with 1986 career wins and Don "the Snake" Prudhomme held the Funny Car record with 36.

Notes: Cruz Pedregon started the NHRA season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 4.935/307.06. An opening round 5.08/296.06 beat Gary Densham, and in round two, his 5.12/299.10 took out Dale Pulde. He faced John Force in the semifinals, and Cruz smoked the tires and lost to John's 5.25/298. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.17 qualified #4, but he fouled against Kenji Okazaki in the first round. Only sixteen cars showed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, so qualifying wasn't an issue - Pedregon's 5.16/300.30 got him the #8 spot in the field. In round one, he beat Whit Bazemore with a 5.21/268.89, followed by a second round 5.11/297.02 that advanced over a fouling Al Hofmann. But in the semifinals, he and Force had a good race that saw Force's 5.08/300 outrun Cruz's 5.13/301.30.

In round two, his opponent, Gene Modlin, broke on the line and the "Powers-Steel" car advanced with a 6.79/231.95. In the semifinals, he faced Don Prudhomme, and both smoked the tires. The "Snake" recovered first, and his 6.86/213 beat Denny's 7.75/134.00 to the stripe. Gainesville was their next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. The team continued to qualify well, with a 6.38/216.34 getting the #8 spot in the field. But a troubled 7.55/134.73 in the first round, lost to Shirl Greer's 6.35/230. Traction wasn't the best at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Savage's 7.16/196.50 qualified #2 behind Dale Pulde's 6.88/221. In round one, he improved a lot, where his 6.65/202 beat Pete Williams' 6.89/213 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Frank Oglesby got off the line a little quicker in the semifinals, and his 6.60/218 hung on to win over Denny's 6.59/218. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a great 6.09/212.26 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car show. Dennis Geisler broke on the line in the first round, and Savage ran 6.17/215.31 to advance. In round two, a 6.18/217.91 beat Bob Pickett's slightly quicker 6.16/230. He got another solo in the semifinals when Dave Condit, driving the "L. A. Hooker," had the car lock up in gear. A 6.22/230.76 advanced to the final. His final-round opponent was Tripp Shumake, driving Johnny Loper's Arrow. The two had a good race, but the Camaro had a bit more in it than the Arrow, and Savage's 6.21/214.79 got the win over Tripp's hard-charging 6.30/226. From hero to zero. The following week (April 2), Denny failed to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Division Seven race at Fremont. What's more surprising was that it only took a 6.59 to make the field. The roller-coaster ride continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. There he qualified #2 with a 6.36/204. A 6.75/201 beat Greer's troubled 13.05 in round one. In round two, Les Cassidy also had problems against him, and Savage advanced with a 6.49/216. Even his semifinal opponent, Williams, could not get in a good run against him, and Denny ran 6.56/225 to meet low-qualifier, Pulde in the final. When it's your day, it's your day as Pulde broke, and Savage got the victory with a 7.12/223. On May 21, the IHRA held its Dixie Nationals at Atlanta. Savage qualified poorly, down in the #9 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Pulde. Crew Chief Dan Geare must have set the car on "kill" as Savage cracked off a 6.26 to beat Dale's 6.35. Denny set Low ET in round two with a 6.24 that sent Greer packing. He had a good race with Dave Settles in the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals. Savage's 6.34 came out on top over Settle's 6.37. He faced the "Chi-Town" bunch in the final. Savage had the edge in terms of their ET's in competition. But Williams pulled out a squeaker, running 6.45/215 to get the win over Denny's 6.47/226.13. Savage was also credited with Top Speed at 228.42. Savage was in Milan in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.50 but improved to 6.11/229.5 (Low ET and Top Speed) in the opening round over Pete Williams, who had shut the "Chi-Town Hustler" off on the line. Another 6.11 at 217.91 beat Roger Lindamood in the semifinals, and he went up against Tom Anderson in the final. Anderson was no slouch as he had won his semifinal race with a 6.12. But in the final, Tom had a wheelie bar break and went into a huge wheelstand while Savage ran a motor-blowing, on fire, 7.28/134.94 for the victory. Best NHRA ET of 6.120 236 at the Summernationals, which Denny won over Ed McCulloch. | We need to confirm the 6.02 from OCIR.

Notes: Jim debuted his new, low buck 'Cuda at Irwindale on November 14. It was a 32 car show, and Jim's early Hemi-powered car won the event while setting a 6.80 track record. He got to the winner’s circle by advancing past a fouling Don Hampton in the first round, with a 6.96/184.80. In round two, his 6.95/194.80 beat Mike Snively in Jim Annin's Challenger and in round three, he soloed with a 7.17/160.14 when Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker was unable to run. A semifinal 7.25/155.97 beat Dale Pulde in Dick Bourgeois' Javelin. Then in the final, he let it all hang out and won the event with a 6.80/197.80 over a broken Larry Arnold in the "Kingfish." At Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA Supernationals on November 22, Dunn qualified number two (to Prudhomme's 7.044/200) with a 7.045/194.38. A first-round 7.28/167 beat Larry Reyes' troubled 10.08 in the "Super Duster." In the second round, he beat Snively, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a 7.50/165.36 that lost to the eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.97/211. | Best NHRA time was 6.996.

Notes: This car was literally put together in the pits at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals by Mike Hamby and Dale Pulde. On the car's maiden run, Dale ran 6.10/183. After some adjustments to the spoiler, he came back out and ran 6.01/247. On his first official qualifying pass and third run ever on the car, Pulde blasted it to a 5.91/252.80. On Saturday, he ran an amazing 5.76/263 in the heat of the day (85 degrees). Then during the "Night of Fire," Dale ran 5.69/256.41 to take the pole. Pulde went on to win by beating Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.71/260. He ran 5.68/260 in the second round to beat John Collins. Another 5.69 at 257 beat Kenny's quicker 5.66 (Low ET) at 258 in the semifinal. In the final, he ran Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" broke on the line, and Pulde took the victory. They next towed to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a 5.97/252.38 qualified #13. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, with a 5.86/251. In the second round, Pulde's tire-smoking 6.56/152.18 lost to Bernstein's 5.74/249. The "High Life Warrior" picked up another win at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. Dale qualified #1 with a 5.66/249.30. A first-round 5.84/236.84 beat Dominic Santucci, and in the semifinals, he beat Joe Amato's 5.98/221 with a 5.70/249.30. In the final, he beat Bernstein with a 5.90/247.25. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Dale ran 5.89/253.23 to qualify #12. Ed McCulloch fouled against him in the opening round, and he advanced with a 5.82/248.48. But in round two, he smoked the tires once again and lost to Don Prudhomme. The following week (July 7), he was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #1, and his 5.78/252 beat Tim Grose's 5.85/233 for yet another victory in the final. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.71/249 qualified #5, and in round one, his 5.78 advanced when Ron Correnti shut off with problems. But in round two, the car went into a wheelstand, and he lost to eventual winner Bernstein. He then went to St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals, and he bagged that one as well, stopping John Pott in the final. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Pulde qualified #1 by resetting both ends of the track record with a 5.73/251.39. He ran 5.87/238.09 he beat Jim Head in the opening round. A round two 5.83/244.56 beat Rick Johnson's 6.04/229 in the "Hawaiian." Another 5.83 at 245.23 stopped a tire-smoking John Force in the semifinal. Once again, he faced the red and white "Budweiser King" of Bernstein in the final. The two had a great race that saw Pulde's 5.81/250.69 come out second best to Kenny's 5.79/245. | At the NHRA Castrol GTX Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, Pulde qualified #2 with a 5.612/255.24. He Defeated #10 qualifier Graeme Cowin in round 1 with a 5.651/251.53 & #6 qualifier John Force in round 2 with a 5.722/246.44, but lost to #8 qualifier & eventual winner Tim Grose in the Semis. | Photo from Milan, MI, 1985.

Notes: Doug Thorley's Corvair is one of the best-remembered funny cars of the Sixties. It was known both for its performance and its looks. The Corvair replaced his "Chevy 2 Much" '65 Chevy II. The new Pat Foster, Ron Scrima-built piece had tinted Plexiglas windows, a lace paint job, and gold painted Halibrand mags. The car was the poster child of late Sixties fads. Thorley had one of the great weekends of his career at Indy '67. The Doug's Headers Corvair ran 7.693 to win the race over several Hemi-powered machines. He also set Top Speed at 192.30. The 7.69 run and Indy win were the high point of Thorley's funny driving career. The notoriety from the win led to Thorley getting a deal with American Motors to build a rear-engine funny car, but the AMC machines never reached the success of the Chevy. | On August 6/1967, Doug Thorley and his supercharged Corvair ran the quickest pass to date by a Funny Car, a 7.86/184 mph. That day at Lions, he also backed it up with a superb 7.91. At the Indy Nationals of that year, he also ran a nice 7.83, winning the race as well. - BS | Components: 490 cubes (stroked 427 Chev), GMC 6/71 blower, Enderle "bug catcher" injection, Art Carr TorqueFlite-9" Ford rear with 3.90 cogs, exhibition Engineering (Pat Foster and Ron Scrima) chassis, coil-over shocks. He was featured in 9/67 Car Craft. - RT | Doug debuted this car at Irwindale on May 20. On its maiden run, it ran 8.50/172. Thorley was back at Irwindale on May 27 for a best-of-three-match race against Gas Ronda's SOHC Mustang. His car had nothing but problems, and Doug lost three straight. His ailing 12.17 lost to Ronda's 8.72 in their first race. A slightly better 11.01/136.98, lost to the Mustang's 8.67/165 in the second race. And Doug shut the car off early in their last race giving Ronda three straight wins. Doug was at Fremont on June 26 for a best of three match race against Fred Goeske in the "Hemi-'Cuda." Thorley had a lot of problems on this day. Doug broke a couple of valves in their first race and lost to Fred's 8.65/185. Doug could not run after that, and Goeske made a solo run for the match race win. Also ran 191.89 at Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA 11/25/67.

Notes: Hughes attempted to qualify for the AHRA Winternationals but failed to make the show. At the NHRA Winternationals, Hughes qualified #8 with a 7.66 (low qualifier was 7.53). He beat Steve Bovan in the first round, and a holeshot 7.71 in round two beat Larry Arnold's quicker 7.58. He faced Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" in the semifinals, and he fouled, advancing Reyes into the final. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Candies and Hughes debuted their new 'Cuda. They made a deal and had Reyes drive their '69 car at the race. In qualifying, the old car out-qualified the new one. Leonard ran 7.28/202 for the #4 spot, while the old car qualified one spot higher in #3 with a 7.21/208 (Top Speed). Both made their way to the final, with the old car's times being much better than the new one's. Times for Hughes were 7.32 over Huston Platt in Tommy Smith's Dart and 7.34 in the semifinals over Bobby Rowe's 7.39 in the "Super Duster." By comparison, Reyes ran 7.15 and 7.107. In the final, the two staged, and after the light turned green, Reyes waited a very long time before leaving the line. Leonard took the victory with a 7.29/202.24, but Reyes still almost caught him and had to lift, running 7.12/191.08. In the semifinals, Reyes had run 206. LaPlace held a Funny Car vs. Top Fuel race on March 15. Hughes won all three of his races, running 7.55/187.11, 7.35/202.24, and 7.36/205.01. On April 12, the Candies and Hughes team was at Amarillo for a match race against Kelly Chadwick. Hughes won both the first two races to sew up the match, but they ran a final race, and Chadwick won with an 8.07 to Hughes' 8.08. The team was tough to beat at the Super Stock Nationals. It was a two-day affair, and on the first day, Leonard qualified #1 with a 7.24/200.44. He beat Phil Castronovo with a 7.22/202.70, while in round two, a 7.19 (Low ET) at 200.44 beat Rowe. Tom Sneden broke on the line in the Bob Banning Dodge in the semifinals, and Hughes 7.22 went into the final. Once again, he met his good friend Reyes. This time out, the outcome was reversed from the Gatornationals final. The "Hawaiian" took the win with a 7.35/201.34 over Leonard's 7.42/200.89. The following day (May 10), these two again worked their way to the final. This time Leonard got the victory with a 7.35. Later in May, LaPlace held a six-car show with all cars running three rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Leonard beat Kenny Bernstein in his first race with a 7.64/189.87. In his second race, Mart Higginbotham's 7.53/185 beat his 7.59/193.13. Hughes got all crossed up against Don Gay and lost his third race with a 7.95/147.70. His best ET did not advance to the final. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, Hughes qualified #4 with a 7.26. A first-round 7.30 beat John Dekker, and a 7.29/200 beat Bernstein's ailing Cougar in round two. He fell off to a 7.63/145 in the semifinals, losing to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein's 7.07/207 in the "Ramchargers" Challenger. In July, Hughes competed at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. All cars made three runs. Leonard lost to Tommy Grove's "Cammer" powered Mustang in the first round. In his second race, a 7.47 beat Randy Walls, while in his third race, a 7.34 beat Marc Susman in the "Atlas Oil Tool" Maverick. Leonard raced at the 900-foot track at Southeastern Dragway for the Dallas Funny Car Championships near the end of July. It was a sixteen-car show with many "name" drivers in attendance. Hughes' 7.13 in the first round beat Susman, but he lost to Shirl Greer in the second round.

Notes: In the new millennium, Don Schumacher has become the owner of the largest professional team in drag racing with eight cars. But at one time, he was a driver himself with the "Stardust" series of fuel funny cars that he raced from 1966 to 1974. The car is the "Stardust" '68 Barracuda. The car featured a late Chrysler engine inside a Logghe Bros. frame. Schumacher bought the car from Butch Leal, who gave up funny cars to go doorslammer racing. This was a departure for Schumacher, who previously raced Romeo Palamides-built cars, including a front-hinge flip-top funny car. - BS | Don Schumacher really started to run well when crew chief John Hogan came on board in July. Things didn't start so well when Don drove the car into the ditch during the Super Stock Nationals, and the team showed up at Detroit on July 26 with the front of the car wearing primer. A blown transmission on a warm-up run was followed by an off-pace 8.90 in the opening round of the eight-car show that lost to Bruce Larson. The next day (July 26), Detroit ran them again, only now they expanded the field to twelve cars. In the first round, Don's 7.82/182.18 beat Bob Fulp in the "Limefire." He got to solo in round two and made an easy 13.02 pass. In the semi-final, he had trouble and shut down to 11.73/78 in a loss to Larson's 8.27/166. Sunday was the last day for the three-day event at Detroit, and this time Schumacher went all the way. An off-pace 8.42/170.77 defeated Fulp's equally troubled 8.46/172 in the first round. In the second round, his 7.89/181.80 took out Mike Burkhart's 7.91/153. He got some revenge over Larson in the semi-final by running 7.78/183 over Bruce's 7.79/182. In the final, he faced Kelly Chadwick, and his 7.93/184.42 got the victory over Chadwick's 8.27/145.

Notes: At Pomona for the Winternationals, Mark didn't qualify all that well with a 5.44/269.13 fitting in the #11 spot. He improved to a first-round 5.34/274.05 over Ed McCulloch, but in the second round, he lost to Chris Lane's 7.17/246 to Mark's 7.50/170.71 in a troubled run for both drivers. He qualified much better at the next NHRA race, the Supernationals, where a 5.29/272.23 put him in the #3 spot. Mark made it into the semifinals before smoking the tires and losing to Bruce Larson. At the Gatornationals, the team again qualified #3 with a 5.34/271.41 getting the spot. Unfortunately, they lost to Art Hendey in the second round. A 5.55/260.86 qualified in the dreaded #9 position at the Southern Nationals setting up a first-round matchup against low qualifier Larson. Bruce triumphed over Oswald in that race. By the fifth race of the season, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, the team was getting antsy to win. A 5.36/275.06 qualified #4, and Mark ran 5.38 over Eric Reed in the first round. In the second round, he got a break when John Force broke at half-track and a 5.40/259 advanced into the semifinals to meet Don Prudhomme. In that race, a 5.41/272 beat Prudhomme's quicker 5.39, and the "Candies and Hughes" car was in its first final of '89. All good things come to an end, and in the final against Kenny Bernstein, the Probe broke, giving Kenny a single for the win. It was off to the Cajun Nationals on May 28 for the sixth stop on the NHRA tour. A 5.44/266.66 qualified #2 just behind Prudhomme. Mark beat a tire-smoking Force in the first round with a 5.52/264. A second-round 5.57 lost to McCulloch's 5.46. It was then off to National Trail for the Springnationals, where Mark qualified #5 with a 5.34/271.49. An even better 5.32 in the first round beat Frank Kramberger, but the car broke after his burnout against Tom Hoover in the second round. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. Oswald ran 5.51/253.95 to qualify #2. He beat R.C Sherman in the first round, with a 5.49/246.23 and a second-round 5.60/256.55 beat Force's 5.63/263. In the semi's, another 5.60/238.98 beat Hendey and set up another final round matchup against Bernstein. Oswald didn't break this time, but his 5.54/258.69 just lost to Kenny's 5.51/265. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, a 5.36 qualified #4. He beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, but against Don Gay Jr. in round two, the Probe broke. It was beginning to become a long winless season for the team when they rolled into Denver for the Mile High Nationals. They qualified #3 with a 5.59/253.09 and beat Gay Jr. in the first round and in round two a 5.64/249 beat Force's 5.70. In the semifinals against Bernstein, Mark beat him with a track record 5.50 at 258, putting himself in the final against Larson. In the final, Oswald ran a 5.62 but lost it on the starting line to Bruce's slower 5.66. The eleventh race of the season was the California Nationals on July 30. Once again, the team made it to the finals. A 5.40/274.47 qualified #4. He beat Mike Dunn in the first round, and in the second round, both he and Hendey smoked the tires with Oswald's 6.49/239.61 coming out on top. Mark pulled a driving job on McCulloch in the semifinals beating Ed's 5.47/270 with a 5.49/267.85. In the final, he ran Prudhomme, who had set Low ET and Top Speed (5.30/276.49). Mark picked it up in the final to a 5.36/274.72 but still lost to the "Snake's" 5.32/272. It was the fourth runner-up finish of the year for the team. The tour continued to Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Mark qualified #8 with a 5.43/266.27 but lost to R.C. Sherman in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the next event, the Northstar Nationals. A 5.46/263.23 qualified #7. In the first round, the Probe spun the tires to a 6.12/248.07 and lost to Larry Camenzind's 5.94/212. The bad luck continued right into Indy for the US Nationals. The team qualified #5 with a 5.33/272.06, but upstart Scott Kalitta beat them in the first round. After losing in the first round at the last three events, the team rebounded somewhat at the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. Mark qualified #2 with a 5.21/283.10. A 5.29/265.09 advanced when Tom Hoover fouled in the first round. In round two, he backed up his qualifying marks for both ends of the NHRA record when he beat Tony McCallum with a 5.23/279.50. Unfortunately, Mark smoked the tires to a shut-off 8.86/87.20 loss to Force's 5.34/276 in the semifinals. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals, a 5.19/280.19 (Top Speed) qualified #3. Oswald beat Mike Dunn in the first round, with a 5.24 and a second-round 5.29/273.39 beat Al Hofmann in round two. Mark finally got one back from Larson in the semifinal when his 5.23/281.60 beat Bruce's close 5.24/274. In the final, he met Prudhomme, and while Don blasted to a 5.26/269 victory, Mark smoked the tires to another runner-up finish. The team got its first #1 qualifying position of the year at the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway with a 5.41 (Low ET) doing the deed. Things looked rosy until Mike Dunn put them on the trailer in the first round. It was back to Pomona for the season-ending World Finals, where a 5.28 (Low ET) at 279.41 got their second pole of the year. In the first round, he beat Hoover with a new NHRA Top Speed record of 283.28, but he ended his season in the next round against McCulloch when Mark spun the tires and lost to Ed's 5.56/264. Also, set the record at 5.214 at Maple Grove 9/89 and 5.298/283.10 National Records at 89 Supernationals. The 283.28 National Record was the fastest NHRA speed of the decade (second only to Scott Kalitta's 286.62 at IHRA Ennis 1988). Also, great 5.232 at 89 Chiefs was part of the quickest side-by-side pass (Bruce Larson 5.247). Also, 281.60 at Chiefs was half of the fastest side-by-side pass (Larson 274.72). Mark Oswald and the "Candies and Hughes" team had a good season in '89 despite finishing the season fourth in points. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: After a great '76 season, Burgin was hoping for more success in '77. He debuted his new Monza at Fremont on January 1 for the Sixth Annual Nitro Bowl. He had handling problems in the first round, but he still won his race. Burgin was lined up against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" for their second-round race when it started to rain, and the race was canceled. Gary qualified #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But he was back in the Mustang II (thanks, Joe Moore). He beat Dale Pulde in the second round to face Don Prudhomme in the semifinals. Burgin had trouble, and his new Monza caught fire on the line while eventual winner Prudhomme headed for the final with a 6.29/216 solo. The damage was lite, and Gary showed at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #5. In the second round, he got out of shape and lost to Gordie Bonin. In May, he won the Olympics of Drag Racing event, beating Prudhomme in the final with a 6.17/233.16. At Columbus, Ohio, for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified on the pole with a 6.10/236.84 (Low ET and Top Speed). Unfortunately, he lost to Bonin in the first round. He was runner-up to Tom Hoover at a Memorial Weekend Funny Car race at Martin, Mich. Gary qualified #3 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.17/234.98. He lost to Hoover in the second round when he smoked the tires and shut off. A week later (July 24), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. It was good to see him back on the IHRA tour as he hadn't run any IHRA events in '77 up until Milan. Gary must have been glad to be back as well as he won the race and set a new IHRA record of 6.08. He qualified #3 with a 6.28 in the eight-car field. In the first round, Burgin beat Jim Pryor in Jim Naramore's car, then stepped up to a 6.13 in the semifinals to beat Tom McEwen's quicker 6.11. In the final, he took the victory with his 6.08 beating Dale Pulde's right there 6.09. On August 4, he was back at Englishtown for its Funny Car Race of Champions event. All cars ran two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gary won his first race with a 6.43/218 that was Low ET of the first-round over Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." But in the second race, he fouled and shut off. Two other cars bettered his 6.43, and Burgin failed to reach the final. He was up North in Canada a few days later, on August 7, for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.31/230.76 qualified #3. He advanced past the first-round with a solo 6.30 when Tim Kushi's Vega failed to fire, but in the second round, he had a fuel pump break, and he lost to Prudhomme. Another win came a week later, on August 14, at Martin, Michigan's US 131 for the PHR Championships. All cars ran the first-round race with the eight lowest ETs regardless of winning or losing, advancing into round two. Gary's first-round 6.44 lost to Ron Colson's 6.40 in the "Hawaiian," but his ET qualified for the show. In the second round, he ran 6.18 to beat Prudhomme, and in the semifinals, a 6.23/234 beat recent Grandnationals winner Tom Hoover. In the final, he grabbed the victory when Pulde had problems and slowed to a 15.22 while Gary ran 6.61/231.36 to win. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, almost 40 cars fought for the sixteen spots available. Burgin qualified #2 behind Prudhomme with a 6.07/238.09. In the first round, he set Low ET of the meet with a 6.02 at 237, beating John Lombardo's 6.59. In round two, a 6.08/236 beat Tom McEwen's 6.24/233. But he was not going to repeat as the winner when in the semifinals, his parachute deployed on his run and his 'chute pulling 8.18/92 lost to Richard Rogers' 6.54/216 in Jim Green's "Green Elephant." That was a tough loss. Gary did not attend the NHRA Fallnationals, but he was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals, where he qualified on the pole with a 6.04/241.93 (Low ET and Top Speed), but he lost early. As the season was coming to a close, he won the Governor's Cup Funny Car race at Sacramento over Ed McCulloch, with his 6.20 winning over the "Ace's" 6.25.

Notes: rnrnHenry's first NHRA national event with the M/T car was the Springnationals in Dallas, where he ran 6.929/211.26 for the #6 spot. He won round one with a 6.98/206.42 when Mat Higgenbotham crossed the centerline. Henry defeated Richard Tharp in round two, 6.84/214.29 to 6.94/206.42. In round three, he lost a close one to Kelly Brown, 6.81/218.97 to 6.86/213.27. At Indy, he was the number one qualifier at 6.541/226.70, which stood as the Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. In round one, Henry won at 7.03/209.30 when Shirley Muldowney smoked the tires. He took a 10.81 single in round two when Don Schumacher could not start on time. In round three, M/T teammate Dale Pulde took a 6.86/205.94 to 7.26/143.43 win. That was Henry's last NHRA national event of the year. | In 1971, Henry Harrison was the number one qualifier, set low elapsed time and Top Speed at the US Nationals in one of Mickey Thompson's cars. His 6.541 was the quickest run to date in a Funny Car and his 226.70 miles per hour blast was simply unheard of. - Bob Frey | The Setzer/Kelly Brown Vega went 227.27 earlier that year; it was even a cover story in HRM. - Joe Moore

Notes: First 280 mph run in history. Also 5.48 at 273.14 at Ennis All Stars 4/87 (no records set at that event). Set national record at 270.43 at 87 Summernationals. Then at Indy, ran 278.89, but did not back it up. However, did run 274.64, which the 278.89 backed up for the record. Finally, reset national record at 280.72 at Chief Nats. Ran 279.93 at Ennis 10/87 to back up record. Set ET record at 5.443 at Chief Nats (but ran 5.405 in qualifying). Duplicated 280.72 at World Finals (at 5.419). Photo from Indy 1987. | Mike was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #3 with a career best (to this point) 5.56/266.42. In the first round, he broke a blower pulley and slowed to 6.50/143.35 in a loss to Dale Pulde's 5.80/246.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1988. Dale qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.601/255.68. He improved to 5.452/268.25 in round two to beat Darrell Amberson and an even better 5.429/269.05 in the semifinals beat a tire-smoking john Force. He faced Jim Head in the final. Head had problems and Pulde got the victory with a 6.024/223.26. NHRA best times of 5.404 at Indy and 270.27 at the Pomona finals. Formerly listed 274 mph. Did that occur at IHRA Ennis in October?

Notes: Qualified fifth at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 at 7.120/194.80. Ran 6.88 at Fremont. | At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Rich ran 7.62 to qualify #6. A first-round 7.93 lost to Larry Reyes' 7.54 in the "Hawaiian." On February 14 he was at Lions where 30 cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Siroonian qualified, but in the first round, his 7.55/171.10 lost to Don Prudhomme's 7.18/208.81. A few days later (February 22), while attempting to qualify for the third OCIR All-Pro race, a front tire blew out at speed. The 'Cuda was demolished when it hit a light pole. Rich was OK, but the car was toast. Soon after this Rich was called away by uncle Sam and did a tour of duty. During that time Arnie Behling drove for car owner John Mazmanian. Siroonian was back behind the wheel at NHRA's Division 7 race at OCIR on September 19. He beat a tire smoking Dave Beebe in the first round, with a 7.24 while a strong 7.04/204.68 beat Bob McFarland in the semifinals. This set up a final round race with Ray Alley. Rich got the victory with a 7.06/207.85. At Fremont's Fall Championships on September 26, he did pretty well, becoming the first Funny Car to run a "six" at Fremont with a 6.98 and beating Alley in the semifinals. He won the race by beating Mike Snively's 7.07/210 in the final with track records of 6.86/214.28. The track record going into this race was 7.11 by Ed McCulloch. Rich lost to Gene Conway in the second round at OCIR on October 10 for the East/West Funny Car Championships. He beat Randy Walls' 7.23/206 with a 7.23/207.85, but his second round 7.31/200.44 lost to Conway's 7.09/201. | Best NHRA ET was 7.169/190.67. Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/70

Notes: Rick Howard qualifying photo from 1992 NHRA SpringNats, Columbus. Same car from 1991. Gary made one of the most impressive runs of "ANYBODY" in '92 with a 5.11 blast at Ennis, TX. | Gary started the season by qualifying #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.41/263.00. He lost to Al Hofmann in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.44/256.99 qualified #8. Another 5.44/262.00 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover's career-best 5.26/273. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.43/266.27. A tire-smoking 5.90/174.41 in the first round, lost to Hofmann's 5.30/272. Gainesville saw him run 5.48/267.61 to qualify #15 for the NHRA Gatornationals. Gary stepped up to a career-best (to this point) of 5.23/275.39 to beat Hofmann in the first round. In the second round, both he and Mark Oswald smoked the tires, but Bolger recovered first to win with a 6.03/162.19. A strong 5.27/273.80 in the semifinals lost to Jim Epler's 5.22/270. The fifth NHRA event of the season was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Gary ran 5.48/265.33 to qualify #15. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Gary Densham's 5.57/265. After that, it was off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Gary qualified #12 with a 5.57/265.87. He lost in the first round, to Del Worsham. In mid-June, Bolger was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, he lost in the first round, this time to Gordon Mineo. He qualified #12 with a 5.56/269.38. At the end of June, he traveled up north to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He got his best qualifying spot of the year when he ran 5.38/271.24 to qualify #4. In his first-round race, opponent Dale Barlet crossed the centerline, and Gary had troubles and could only muster a 6.39/239.17. The trouble was terminal, and he was unable to run Oswald in the second round. Englishtown hosted the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals in July. Gary qualified #13 with a 5.59/245.56. In the first round, he broke a blower drive and lost to Chuck Etchells. The tenth race of the NHRA season was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. Gary ran 5.55/256.62 to qualify #8, but he lost to Whit Bazemore in round one.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 16th at 5.18/295.76 but had the misfortune of running against John Force in round one. Would eventually be the sixth member of the Castrol Four Second Club (October 26/1996) with a 4.932 at Pomona Calif. | Richard Hartman had the only Chevy-bodied car to qualify in Funny Car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.51/218.49 got him the #15 spot in the field. He shocked Tony Pedregon in the opening round when his 5.04/297.42 beat the #2 qualifier's 5.11/300. Tony was so surprised that he thought his car had broken the way Richard had pulled away. But in round two, Hartman lost to Gary Clapshaw in a Camaro versus Mustang run. At Firebird Raceway, for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Richard's 5.15/293.82 qualified #3. But this time, it was he who was upset in the first round. Gary Bolger, who qualified #14, stepped up to 5.24 to eliminate him in the opening round. Hartman continued to qualify strongly at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.08/293.73 qualified #2 behind Al Hofmann's 5.06/287. He had a close first-round race that saw his 5.11/282.57 beat Tim Wilkerson's 5.14/275. But in round two, an off-pace 5.54/221.02 lost to Del Worsham's 5.41/215. It was then off to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 5.13/288.83 qualified #5. But he lost to Tony Pedregon in round one. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. Richard ran 4.932/304.05 to lead qualifying at the NHRA World Finals. Unfortunately, he lost to Ray Higley in round one, when he shut off to a 12-second pass.

Notes: Dale failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was one of 45 funny cars to try to qualify. Armstrong ran really well at Famoso on March 8 for the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #2 with a 6.251/236.22. A first-round 6.27/231.95 beat Dave Condit's 6.45/228. In round two, a consistent 6.25 beat Gary Densham, who shut off, and in the semifinals, he improved to a 6.17/242.58 (Top Speed) over Craig Epperly, who broke. In the final, he lost to Dale Pulde, but it was still a strong showing. From there, he went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran his first-ever "five," a 5.981/241.93, to qualify #4 and to become the sixth member of the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. A first-round 6.047/234.37 took out John Force, but he hurt some parts and could not show for his second-round match against Pulde. Dale was the first alternate at NHRA Atlanta with a 6.175 (speed not reported). In May, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Eastern Regional, and while he failed to reach the finals, he did get Top Speed with a 234.99. On June 21, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.253/229.59 qualified #13 in the field. He lost to future employer Kenny Bernstein in the first round, 6.18/238 to 6.238/226.70. He made it into the final at the next NHRA race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 5.995/231.95. In the first round, opponent Rick Johnson broke, and Dale ran an easy 6.235/209.78 to advance. In round two, a 6.148/229.59 beat Fuzz Miller's 6.32/224. In the semifinal, a 6.180/231.36 beat a tire-smoking Mike Dunn. In the final, he had lane choice over Don Prudhomme, but Armstrong blew an engine, and his 7.082/125.52 finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.07/241. At the NHRA Grandnationals in August, Dale qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.059/236.22. Tim Grose fouled against him in the first round, and Armstrong advanced with a 6.256/231.36. He lost to Dom Prudhomme in the semifinals, 6.33/227 to a 10-second shutoff. Dale qualified #5 with a 6.22 in the eight-car show at the PHR Championships. He beat a fouling Mike Dunn with a 6.08/231.36 and Tom Hoover in the semis with a 6.19/225.56. So again, Bernstein and Armstrong ran against one another, this time in the final. Unfortunately, Dale hurt his engine in his semifinal win and could not run, so Kenny soloed for the win. Dale was the third alternate at Indy with a 6.124/232.88. He qualified #15 at Fremont for the Golden Gate Nationals at 6.134/233.16 but shut off against Craig Epperly in round one. He had an excellent World Finals performance, however. Dale qualified #1 at 5.939/238.72. In found one, he ran 5.937/230.17 to be Al Segrini's 9.94 shutoff. He set Low ET of the Meet in round two with a 5.891/235.60 over Raymond Beadle, who shut off to a 12.31. Gary Burgin ended Dale's day in the semis with a 6.05/234 when Dale broke. The 5.891 was one of the first 5.80 passes in the sport and garnered plenty of notoriety.

In the second round, he lost a motor and the race to Hoover. He then went to LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 race where he got back at Hoover by beating him in the final for the victory. The rain delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals only had an eight-car field. Tom ran 6.46/227.27 to get the last spot in the show, but a first-round 6.43/224.43 lost to Force's 6.40/223. Early in June, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, where his 6.49 qualified #3 in another eight-car show. He beat John Collins before losing to Billy Graham in the semifinal. Next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.31/220.58 qualified #15 and a 6.53/214.28 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.41/233 in the first round. He followed that up with a runner-up finish at the North American Grand Nationals at Detroit. A strong 6.22/217 beat Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" in round two and a 6.50 beat Len Imbrogno in the semifinal. But a blown engine in the final slowed him to a 7.14/146 that lost to John Pott's 6.66 in the "Mr. Norm" car. On June 24, McEwen was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. He reset the AHRA Funny Car record to 6.08 at 240.00 in the first round, and a semifinal 6.12/236.22 beat low qualifier Johnny White. He faced Hoover in the final who had also been running well and had reset the AHRA speed record to 242. The two both had problems - Hoover shut off and McEwen won with an 8.00. Hoover and McEwen raced against each other quite a bit in '79 and early in July, the two met for a best of three match race at Houston. McEwen won two straight. The first-round saw his 6.36/209.30 beat Hoover's 6.49/178 and a motor blowing 6.41/209.30 won again. The next NHRA event was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Tom qualified #10 with a 6.23/223.32 and he set Low ET of the first-round with a 6.15 that beat Roy Harris. But he hurt his crank on the run and was unable to show for his second round race against Tripp Shumake. Early in August, he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.22/232.55 and in the semifinal, set Low ET with a 6.21 to beat Collins. He met Tom Hovland in the final and he overpowered the track, smoking the tires to a 6.72 in a runner-up finish to Hovland's 6.36. Another win came his way at the AHRA World Finals on August 19. There he beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the semifinals before setting a track record 6.15 at 223.88 in the final to beat a troubled Gordie Bonin at 13.08. He almost got into the "fives" at Indy for the NHRA U. S. Nationals. His 6.01/238.72 qualified #4. McEwen had scored an emotional victory here the year before and was hoping to repeat. He lasted until the semifinals before his 6.21/234 lost to eventual winner Bonin’s 6.16/240. He then made the trip to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. His 6.18/238.72 qualified #8, but in the opening round both he and opponent Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's car ran 6.24 (McEwen at 238.72 again), but Ridings got the win light. The NHRA season came to an end at Ontario Motor Speedway for the World Finals. McEwen qualified #3 with a 6.24/230.76 and a 6.53/229.59 beat former "Hot Wheels" teammate Don Prudhomme's 6.85/229 in the opening round. But in round two, his 6.57/225.56 fell to Ron Colson's 6.35/236 in the "Hawaiian.” McEwen finished tenth in the NHRA season long points standings. | Where was the 243 run?
