Notes: Confirmed 5.337 at 277.00 at Seattle and Pomona Finals 1988. Also 5.378 from Indy 1988. Where was this 5.290/278 from? Photo from Milan, MI, 1988. | Oswald started the '88 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #6 with a 5.45. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round, and in round two, a 5.49/262 beat a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein. But in the semifinals, Mark got out of shape and shut off against Jim Head. The team then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where they promptly smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Ed McCulloch. A week later, on March 20, they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Mark qualified #4 with a 5.37/275.98 and in round one, defeated Bruce Larson. In the second round, a 5.78/264 beat Scott Kalitta. He moved into the finals by running a 5.44/270 over a tire smoking Don Prudhomme. But a final round 5.35/278 by Bernstein ended the day for Oswald. He made up for the loss by winning the IHRA Supernationals at DeSoto Dragway, Bradenton, on March 27. The race was originally slated to run on March 6, but it was rained out. Mark ran 5.62 and 5.66 to work his way into the final where his final round 5.67/249 took the victory over Kalitta's close 5.69/256. At IHRA's Texas Nationals, Mark ran well again. He ran 5.42/267 in the first round, and in round two, a 5.40/267.06 beat Tim Grose. But a consistent 5.41/266.03 in the semifinals lost to Mike Dunn's 5.39/275. Oswald made it into the semifinals at the next event as well, the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Mark advanced past the first-round with a 5.67, and in round two, a 5.55/260 got around an out of shape Tom Hoover. But he lost to McCulloch's Low ET of the meet 5.52 in the semis. On May 1 they were at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Mark qualified #2 and in the first round, he advanced with a 5.83/260.11 when Etchells broke. In the semifinals, he fouled against Head. Mark got his first NHRA victory of the year at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals on May 15. A 5.59 qualified #4 and be beat Larson in round one. A 5.55/268.73 (Top Speed) beat Grose in round two and in the semifinals, a 5.62/268 beat Head. In the final, he out drove McCulloch by running a 5.55/267 to win over the "Ace's" 5.54/262. A week later (May 22) he was back in the winner's circle at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He stopped Hoover in the semifinals with a 5.64/261.17 and went on to win the event by running 5.65/259.51 in the final over Dale Pulde's 5.75/224 in Billy Meyer's car. On May 29, he made it as far as the semis at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. In his semifinal race, he hazed the tires and lost to Bernstein. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, they went out early when Oswald smoked the tires and crossed the centerline in the first round, against Pulde. Things went far better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Mark ran 5.47/266.98 to qualify #3, and then ran 5.59, 5.55/264, and a semifinal 5.49/267 over a fouling John Force to meet up with Prudhomme in the final. The "Snake" took the win with a 5.44/260, but it was still a good showing for the "Candies and Hughes" team. They followed it up with another runner-up finish at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 10. Mark set Low ET and a new track record with a 5.52 at 256.11 in the first round, while beating R.C. Sherman and in the semifinal, he only needed a 6.00/178.64 to advanced over a tire smoking Pulde. In the final, it was Mark's turn to smoke the tires and he shut off to a 9.89/74.97 to lose to McCulloch's 5.54/265. A week later found the team at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.49/261.78 qualified #6. He beat Eric Reed in the first round, but he lost to the race's eventual winner Prudhomme, in round two.

Notes: Jim qualified #13 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.23. He lost in the first round. He was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he again qualified #13 with a 6.01/246.57. He lost to Tom McEwen in the first round. Early in May, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Head's 6.02/241 qualified #7. In the opening round, he defeated Eric Caskey's BB/FC with a 6.03/250.00. Raymond Beadle smoked the tires in the "Blue Max" in round two, and Jim advanced with a 6.09/250.69. In the semifinal, his off-pace,6.30/240, fell to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 5.73/252. As mentioned, he did well at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3, and in round one, his 6.02/246 beat Frank Hawley's 6.01/241 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He then beat Al Segrini in the second round with a 5.99/245. In the semifinals, a 6.08/245 beat a tire-smoking Mark Oswald. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and despite a good 6.01/245.90 run, he lost to Meyer's better 5.92/249. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Twenty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen car field, and his 5.98/243 qualified #15. Unfortunately, his 6.07/240.00 in the first round lost to Denny Savage's 5.97/248. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan's US 131, Jim ran a 5.77 track record to qualify first in the sixteen-car show. He stayed strong with a first-round 5.78 over Tom Hoover. In round two, a 6.06 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.13. His 6.10 in the semifinal fell to eventual winner Hawley's." He went from top qualifier to the last qualifier when he ran 6.00/247.25 to qualify #16 at the NHRA Springnationals. A first-round 6.07/243.90 lost to Beadle's 5.97/238. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Nationals on June 24, and Jim qualified #4 for the eight-car field with a 5.89/249.30. But in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Bruce Larson. At the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, he qualified #9 with a 5.92/250.00. He failed to reach the finals. The following weekend (July 8), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Jim was running really well here as his 5.73/257.87 (#4) in qualifying attests. In the first round, his 5.76/250 beat Bob Gottschalk's 6.09/247. He turned some heads in round two, where his 5.68/260.86 beat Tom McEwen's 5.81/235. In the semifinal, he slowed to 5.80/257.87, which lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.81/255. After such a great performance, Englishtown was not so great. His 5.91/250.69 qualified #14 for the NHRA Summernationals, and he lost to Hawley in the first round. Jim surprised everyone by winning the prestigious US Nationals over Kenny Bernstein. His best NHRA times were 5.844 at Brainerd and 255.68 at Indy. Notes: Ran 6.03 at Pomona, 6.32 at Gainesville, 6.15 at Columbus, 6.09 at Englishtown, 6.06 at Indy, and 6.33 at Seattle. | Prudhomme got his new Arrow out of Jaime Sarte's shop just five days before the NHRA Winternationals. He did pretty well with it at Pomona. Don qualified #1 with a 6.14/240.64. He beat Jim Liberman in the first round with a 6.07/225.00. A second-round 6.14 at just 203.61 beat John Collins in Tom McEwen's second car. He got a single in the semifinals when Gary Burgin's car caught fire; Don ran 6.29/216.34. In the final, he ran Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Prudhomme wrapped up the weekend by winning the race with a Low ET and Top Speed run of 6.034/247.25. Despite a great year, these was Don's best NHRA numbers for 1977. The speed was a track record. In March, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Again, he qualified #1, this time with a 6.19/231.36. A first-round 6.38 beat Leon Cain, but in round two, he smoked the tires and lost to Eddie Pauling's 6.09 in Johnny Loper's Monza. The following week (March 13), Prudhomme qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.32. He easily got past the first round and then ran 6.34/228 to beat a tire-smoking Bob Pickett in Mickey Thompson's Starfire in round two. In the semifinals, Don faced Roger Lindamood's "Color Me Gone" Monza. Don had him covered performance-wise, as Lindamood qualified #10 and had run 6.51 the round before, but for some reason, Don fouled, giving Roger a free ride into the final. On March 27, the "Snake" beat the "Mongoose" Tom McEwen in the final at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 race. Irwindale held a big Funny Car show on April 9, and Don was there. He lost before the final and again to Pauling, who was debuting a new Arrow for Johnny Loper. The story here was the times: Pauling won with a 5.97 over Don's 6.31. He made it into the final at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event but lost to Gary Burgin. In mid-June, the "Snake" was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.15. He beat Beadle, Gordie Bonin, and Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" to get into the final, where he faced Pickett. Bob outran Prudhomme's 6.26/236.84 with a 6.22/231, and Don had to settle for the runner-up spot. He got it all together at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with 6.09/238.09 times. He took out Tom Prock in the first round, and a 6.26/227 stopped Ed McCulloch in round two. In the semifinals, a 6.31/220 advanced over a shutting-off Tom Hoover, and in the finals, he was to run Billy Meyer. Meyer broke, and Prudhomme won with a 6.42/186.33 pass. Shortly after that (July 23), he stopped off at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.17/231.95 and won the race, beating Norm Wilcox driving Jim Green's "Green Elephant" Vega in the final with a 6.22/222.77. He made a stop at Atco for their Fuel Funny Car Championships. It was a race with all cars making two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Don's first race saw him turn a 6.26/228 (Top Speed) to beat Al Hanna's 6.72 in the "Eastern Raider," while in his second race, he beat R.C. Sherman in the "Black Magic" Vega with a Low ET of the meet 6.22. The other car that made the final was Bruce Larson, whose 6.51 was the second-best time. Based on times, you know the "Snake" was the favorite, but Larson got the jump and won, holding off Prudhomme for the title. Another runner-up effort came at the NHRA Grandnationals on August 7. It featured an eight-car field, and Don set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.17/236.22. The 6.17 tied his own track record. A 6.21/234 in the first round beat Bonin's 6.29/227, and in the semifinals, he advanced with a 6.17 solo pass when Burgin had a fuel pump break. In the final, he ran Hoover and his "Showtime" Monza. Tom won his first NHRA National event with a 6.24/226 over Prudhomme's troubled 6.76/172.08. A week later, he was at Martin, Michigan's US 131, for the PHR Championships. Don singled in the first round, with a 6.11, but in the second round, his 6.22 lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.18. He returned to the winner's circle at the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. He was the quickest in qualifying with a 6.06/241.93. In eliminations, he ran 6.14/234.37 in the first round to beat Meyer's 6.28/218. In round two, he ran his best of eliminations, a 6.10/228 to beat Tripp Shumake in John Powers' Camaro. Prock fouled against him in the semifinals, and Don ran 6.13/225 to move into the finals. The car facing him in the final was a bit of a surprise. It was Richard Rogers driving the "Green Elephant." Richard's best time had been a 6.21 in qualifying, so he was at a bit of a disadvantage. Sure enough, Don won the race with a final round 6.24/236.22 to beat Richard's 6.58/205. Another win came soon after when he won the Irwindale Back to School Race by beating Dave Hough's 6.09 in the final with a 6.05/230. He was in Seattle on September 25 for the NHRA Fallnationals, but rain postponed the event, and he did not return for the "rain date." Don had only qualified #7 with a 6.33, very unusual for him. He ran more "normal" at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.05. He then made like a bracket racer, running three straight 6.06s to enter the final against Bonin. He faltered in the final, slowing to a 6.36 that lost to Gordie's 6.31. | Did Don run 5.95 somewhere this year? We originally listed 5.955, but the Pomona 6.034 is his quickest confirmed ET. Let us know if you have alternate info.

Notes: Eddie was the early number one qualifier on Friday at the PRO Winternationals at Beeline, 1/14/77. He ran 6.24/231.95, which the local paper noted was the quickest car on the grounds for a time, even among the top fuel cars. (Jeb Allen eventually went 6.02/238.72 to lead the fuelers). Dale Emery was number two at 6.33, and Gary Burgin was number 3 at 6.42. The car ran well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Pauling qualified with a 6.29, then when eliminations began, his times dropped two-tenths. An opening round 6.09 beat Henry Harrison and another 6.09 in round two beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme. Pauling set Low ET with a semifinal 6.03 that took out Gordie Bonin. The final was run late and he went up against Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle." It was an entertaining final as Pauling had the body blow off the chassis, and it seemed like Pulde had an easy win, but Pulde got out of shape and crossed the centerline. Eddie's 13.70 won the race over Pulde, who was disqualified. It didn't end there as tempers flared between Pulde's car owner, Mike Hamby, and track management. The following week (March 13), the team was supposed to race at the NHRA Gatornationals, but their win at Bakersfield had been a costly one. The team had used up one aluminum block, 40 pistons, and the Monza body. They didn't have enough parts to run at Gainesville. The Monza body became a Plymouth Arrow in April.

Notes: This was an expensive year for Billy. He qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.04/243.24. Billy then beat John Collins, Denny Savage, and a fouling John Force in the semifinals with a 6.35. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle, and Billy was not the favorite. Beadle had beaten Don Prudhomme in the semifinals with a track record 5.93 at 245.23. But in that race, the body's roof first collapsed and then blew off. The "Blue Max" crew didn't have a spare body with them, so Texas neighbor Kenny Bernstein offered them the use of his spare body. So, before the final, they grafted the roof off of Bernstein's car onto theirs. It looked OK, but Meyer took the victory in the final with a 6.52/205.94 over Beadle's 6.66/236. The win probably cost Meyer more money than he made, as he used up four engines in the event. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #9 with a 6.05/237.46. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Prudhomme. Billy lost to Don's 5.97/245. A week later (March 22), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Things didn't go so well; on Friday, he had a major fire that burnt up the Citation body during qualifying. The race was rain-delayed one week to March 28, and on a trial run, he had his supercharger explode and sent up 35 feet. fireball. The body and interior tin were cracked and broken, but Meyer was OK, and he was still qualified for the show. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.89/100 loss to Beadle's 6.29/234. The NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta had an eight-car field, and Billy's 6.16 qualified #7. He slowed to 7.08 in the first round, in a loss to Bernstein's 6.08. More problems arose at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Billy could not get the Citation down the track. It shook the tires and got out of shape on its qualifying passes, and the best ET was 10.33. Luckily for Meyer, only eight cars showed for the eight available spots and his time held up. His 6.32 beat John Pott's 6.47 in the "Powers Steel" car in round one. A semifinal 6.26/213.77 beat Bernstein's 6.28/226, and Billy found himself in the final against Beadle. Once again, Billy was not the favorite as the "Max" had run IHRA's first 5-second (5.99) time in qualifying, and he backed it up with a 6.00 in the first round. In the final, Meyer smoked the tires to a 7.46 while Beadle picked up the victory with a 6.23. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. After using up two more engines in qualifying, his 6.19 qualified #6. But then his luck began to turn. In the first round, Roy Harris smoked the tires against him, and Billy advanced with a 6.28. In the semifinals, his quick-leaving 6.48 beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.45. This set up another Meyer vs. Beadle final. This time Billy turned the tables, and his 6.21/228.42 got the win over Beadle's 6.26/236. The Funny Car drivers boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals, so Meyer's next stop was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He picked up the win by stopping Bernstein in the final with a 6.17/216. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, Billy's 6.14/233.76 qualified #6, but a first-round 6.47/238.09 lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.40/222. On July 4, he was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 6.29/226.70 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.28/231.36 beat Miller's 6.34/229, but a semifinal 6.49/219.51 lost to Beadle's 6.21/229. He was runner-up to Beadle at the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 12, and the following week (July 19), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He again used two engines in qualifying, finally making the show with a 6.06/238.72 for the #8 spot. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round against Miller and shut off to an 8.59/100.22. His next stop was in Atlanta for the NHRA Eastern Regional race. It was an eight-car field, and Billy qualified #4 with a 6.29/217.39. He improved to a 6.13/219.51 on a solo in the first round when Rick Deschner's Monza broke, and a semifinal 6.07 gave him Low ET and a win over Harris' 6.27. In the final, he faced Tom Anderson driving Jim Wemett's Arrow. Meyer had problems and shut down to 6.66/163.93 in a runner-up finish to Anderson's 6.29/229. Meyer ran his first-ever "5" at Bristol on August 2. His 5.99/235 gave him the pole for the IHRA Summernationals and the time held for Low ET as well. An opening round 6.13/234.98 beat a tire-smoking Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle.” Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Bernstein's 6.30. The following week he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car field, and Billy qualified #1 with a track record 5.896 at 240.64. But in the first round, he overpowered the track, and his smoky 6.57/203.16 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme at 6.24/236. He then went to Brainerd for the Quaker State Championships. It featured a six-car show with all cars making two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Carl Swanson's 6.25/233 beat Meyer's 6.49/210.77 in his first race, but in the second race, Billy also ran 6.25 at 225 to earn a spot in the final. So once again, he faced Swanson, and the results were the same. Carl won with a 6.32/229 over Meyer's close 6.35/221.67. Indy was the next stop for Meyer for the NHRA US Nationals, and he was not happy when he failed to qualify. He had a chance to be the IHRA FC champion as he and Beadle were fighting it out for that title, but Meyer chose to stay in Texas and not compete at the IHRA U.S. Open Championships held at Bristol. He did go to Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals, where his 6.09/231.36 qualified #10.But an off-pace 6.31/187.50 in the first round, lost to Tom Riding's 6.02/234.The season ended badly at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals.During qualifying, he had a valve cover leak, and the oil hit the headers, and the resulting fire burned the body off the car. His time on the pass was 6.26/177.51. The "bump" for the show was 6.20. He was back at OCIR in the first week of November for its Manufacturer's Meet. He reached the final by setting Low ET and Top Speed in his second race at 5.98/246.57. He went up against Springnationals winner Craig Epperly in the final, and Meyer had his parachute fall out, and Craig got the victory. He still finished ninth in NHRA's FC points. Billy’s best NHRA speed was 243.24 at the Winternationals. We previously listed 250.00. Did that occur at an IHRA event, or was that a mistake?

Notes: McEwen ran this car twice during the first ten days of January 1971. At Irwindale Raceway's "New Year's Day Funny Car Championship," he was runner-up to Jim Dunn, and at Lions, during the first AHRA Grand American of the year. At Lions, the Goose had Low ET of the Meet with a questionable 6.55. This car was soon replaced with Tom's 1971 ride, a Ramchargers-powered John Buttera Duster. | 5/71 HRM coverage said the dicey 6.55 was an early shut-off at 198.23! True, not intentional on the 'Goose's part. The story was written, without skepticism, by none other than the renowned Ralph Gudahl (sp.) Jr, with vernacular, apostrophe-absent, driver quotations verging on Ring Lardner's gerund-eliminating speech. - Joe Moore

Notes: The second car under 5.30. Set two national records at 1988 Gators, 5.333 then 5.314. Low qualifier at Indy with a 5.330. Photo from Columbus 1988. | Kenny started the '88 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.57. In the first round, an improved 5.53/257.14 beat Jim Dunn, but in the semifinals, the car broke and he lost to John Force. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.41. A 5.42 in the first round, beat Don Prudhomme, but in round two he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. More problems kept him from the winner's circle at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Bernstein set Top Speed in qualifying with a 271.90 pass and in round one, his 5.40/267.06 beat Dominic Santucci, but in the semifinals, he shut off just off the line giving Force an easy ride into the final. Kenny broke through with a win at the next race, the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.37/272 and in the first round, beat Chuck Etchells with a 5.33/278.46 (Top Speed). In round two, his 5.39/274.97 beat R.C. Sherman and a Low ET shot at 5.31 took out Tom Hoover in the semifinals. The 5.31 was a new NHRA record. To top it all off, he beat Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the final with a 5.35/278.12. At Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Bernstein lasted until the semifinals where his 5.72 lost to Force's 5.60. Things didn't go very well at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.64 and in the first round, beat Prudhomme, but in round two, the car broke at about half track, advancing Ed McCulloch into the semifinals. For the first time since the season opener at Darlington, Kenny was back on the IHRA trail at Bristol for the Springnationals. He qualified #1 and a 5.66/253.59 beat Scott Kalitta in the first round, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Dale Pulde. A week later he was in the finals at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. There he ran 5.47 over Johnny West, a 5.53/256 over Prudhomme, and a 5.50/257 over a tire smoking Oswald in the semifinals. In the final, he lost to an old veteran of the Funny Car wars, Bruce Larson. A 5.44 (Low ET) qualified #1 at the NHRA Springnationals and in the first round, he took out Jim Head. A 5.73/244 beat a tire smoking Pulde, but in the semifinals, he got out of shape and shut off, losing to Force. The wins certainly weren't coming as often as they did in years past and at the NHRA Grandnationals, he fouled in the first round, against Jerry Caminito. Kenny qualified #5 with a 5.56/257.65 while Jerry qualified with a 5.89. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.48/258.39 qualified #3 in the field and he lasted until the semifinals where Larson's 5.57/260 beat his 5.62/255. The "Budweiser King's" next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. It was an eight-car show and Bernstein qualified #1 with a 5.54 (Low ET) at 248.61. He beat Caminito in round one, with a 5.66/248.61 and a 5.62/249.30 beat Santucci in the semifinals setting up a final, round race with Larson. Kenny won that race. After that, he won the NHRA Seafair Nationals at Seattle. A 5.33/269.46 qualified #3. He beat Eric Reed in the first round, and improved to a 5.32/270 in round two to beat Force. In the semifinals, a 5.43/258 beat Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." In the final, he met Brad Tuttle and Bernstein got the win with a 5.35/271.16. The NHRA Winston All-Stars had only eight-car fields in the Fuel categories. Kenny qualified #3 and made it into the final by beating Force with a 5.43/257 and Mike Dunn with a 5.40/262 in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Oswald, and although both ran 5.52, Mark got the win. Bernstein set a 5.40 track record in Sonoma while qualifying #1 for the NHRA California Nationals. Unfortunately, in the first round, he lost to Reed when both ran 5.48, but Eric got the win light. The "Budweiser Team" had an interesting weekend at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Kenny had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.43 at 264.62, but in the first round, against Pulde, he did his burnout and then proceeded to back up to the line. He then found that the transmission was locked into reverse. Crew Chief, Dale Armstrong and fellow crew member Jim Male lifted the body and tried to help Kenny get the car out of reverse. The car lurched forward, hitting both Dale and Jim. Both were OK other than bruises. Pulde singled for the round win. The jokes started coming by the time Bernstein got to Indy. One team had a decal that read "I Break for Crewmen." It was all in good fun as no one got hurt. The Big Bud Shootout was held in conjunction with the NHRA US Nationals. Over the year, the "Budweiser Team" had earned 1,660 points in qualifying at the National events. They were second to Force. The Shootout consisted of the eight best qualifiers over the year. Kenny had won this event in prior years. He won his first-round race with a 5.41/270.18 over Larson's off pace 6.51/134. In the semifinals, it was Kenny who had trouble and his 9.05/83.42 lost to Head's 5.45/269. The next day (September 4), for the US Nationals, he qualified #1 with a 5.33/268.57. He beat Larson again in the first round, with a 5.40/270.51. In round two, a 5.38/267.30 beat Pulde's 5.40/267 and a 5.35/273.97 in the semifinals took out Oswald's 5.42/269. That put him into the final against McCulloch. Ed had just set a 5.32 track record in his semifinal race so he was tough. Kenny ran his best of eliminations in the final, a 5.34/270.83, but he lost to the "Ace's" slight holeshot with a 5.35/271. It was a close race. Bernstein resumed his winning ways at the next NHRA race, the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove on September 18. There, he didn't qualify so well, only running 6.68/134.16 for the #14 spot. He ran even worse in the first round, but his 7.62 advanced when John Martin crossed the centerline on a 5.52 run. Bernstein picked up the pace in round two when both he and opponent Mike Dunn ran 5.38 (Kenny at 266.50), but the red Buick got the win. In the semifinals, Bernstein out drove Pulde as his 5.38/268.49 beat Dale's quicker 5.34/276. Once again he was in the final, and once again his final round opponent was McCulloch. Kenny showed his reflexes were sharp as he once again won with a holeshot. His 5.36/268.49 got the victory over Ed's 5.34/276.

Notes: Everyone expected this car to win the NHRA Funny Car Championship in '89. After winning the championship the previous four years, it was a little disappointing how the season went for Kenny. It started at Pomona for the Winternationals. Kenny qualified way down the ladder in the #13 spot with a 5.47/266.74. He improved to a 5.42/264.16 in the first round to beat Dale Pulde. In round two, a consistent 5.43/269.21 beat Tom Hoover. In the semifinal, he beat Chris Lane with a 5.48/265.33. In the final, he met who was soon to be his nemesis, Bruce Larson. And sure enough, Larson scored the win over Bernstein. The next event on the NHRA schedule was the Supernationals. Kenny qualified #4 with a 5.30/270.27 but broke a rear end in the second round and lost to Art Hendey. The Gatornationals was the next stop; a 5.39/269.70 qualified #6. He lost to Larson in the second round. At the fourth race of the year, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Bernstein qualified #4 with a 5.47/266.27, but once again, he lost in the second round, this time to Eric Reed. He looked like the Bernstein of old at the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #1 with a 5.25 (Low ET) at 280.11. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round and then got a couple of lucky breaks when, in round two, both he and Hoover smoked the tires, but Kenny's 6.45/232 held on for the win. In the semifinals, he ran a 5.42/270 to win over Ed McCulloch, who shut off to a 10.00. In the final, he ran Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Probe, and once again, he had a little luck when Oswald broke, and Bernstein scored his first victory of the season. The next race was the Cajun Nationals. Kenny used a 5.50/266.50 to qualify #4. In the first round against John Martin, the car broke on the burnout, giving Martin an easy single. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals at National Trail. Bernstein qualified #3 with a 5.33/269.13. He beat Kalitta in the first round with another 5.33 but smoked the tires and lost to Jim White in round two. A strong performance was turned in at the Grandnationals in Canada. Kenny set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.44/265.72. In the first round, both he and Johnny West had problems, and both ran 5.60, West at 253 and Bernstein at 212.31, but the Buick still won the race. A 5.47/270.92 (Top Speed) beat Hoover's 5.68 in round two. In the semifinals, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.73/231 with a 5.48/254.47. Once again, he met with Oswald in the final, and the results were the same, with Kenny's 5.51/265.72 beating Oswald's close 5.54/258. He didn't have to wait long for his third victory of the year as it came at the next event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #3 with a 5.35, beat Hendey in the first round, and John Force in the second with a 5.36/272. He ran a solo 5.40/270 in the semifinals when Prudhomme broke just off the line. In the final, he was paired with McCulloch, and Kenny ran a 5.41 to win over Ed's 5.50. He was a favorite to win when the teams headed to Denver for the Mile High Nationals. He didn't disappoint in qualifying when his 5.53/263.38 (Top Speed) got the pole. He beat Hendey in the first round, and a 5.62/254 beat Mike Dunn's close 5.65 in round two. But in the semifinals, Oswald put him away with a track record 5.50. The California Nationals was next, and again Kenny qualified well with a 5.39/273.88, taking the #3 spot. Unfortunately, he and Tony McCallum ran 5.52 in the first round, with Tony winning. The next race was the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. Bernstein qualified #4 with a 5.34/278.89 (Top Speed). He beat Hendey's 5.57/260 in the first round with a 5.35/276.66. In round two, a 5.41/248.23 beat R.C. Sherman, and in the semifinals, he took a big win over Prudhomme with a 5.34/276.07, beating the "Snake's" 5.40/263. In the final, he met Larson, and despite running quicker and faster with 5.37/273.22 times, he lost to Larson's holeshot 5.40/271. At the Northstar Nationals, a 5.43/266.11 qualified #2. When McCallum broke, he ran an easy 11.70/72.42 in the first round. But in round two against Larson, Kenny ran even worse when he smoked the tires to a 14.35/70.56 to lose to Bruce's 5.51/271. Kenny and Dale probably thought things couldn't get worse when they went to Indy for the US Nationals. A 5.37/276.75 qualified #8 there, but he lost to Hoover in round one. They went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals and set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.35/264.71. Kenny got past a fouling Gary Bolger in the first round, and in the semifinals, he ran a 5.64/216.35 that beat Doc Halladay's quicker 5.61. In the final, he met the second qualifier, R.C. Sherman, who beat him with a 5.50 to the "Budweiser King's" 5.54. On September 10, he was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. A 5.51/264.41 qualified #2. He smoked the tires to a 6.67 in the first round but still beat Halladay. A 5.54/272 beat Johnny West's 5.98/244 in the semifinals. Kenny got his first IHRA victory of the year when he stopped a tire-smoking Darrell Amberson in the final with a 5.56/273.53. A week later (September 17), he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He broke 280 in qualifying with a 5.25/280.37 (#3). Another 5.25 at 279.06 beat a fouling Scott Kalitta in the first round, but in round two, he smoked the tires in a 6.80/141.17 loss to Larson's 5.30/276. He also lost in the second round at Topeka for the NHRA Heartland Nationals. There, his 5.44 lost to Oswald's 5.34. The following week (October 8), he was at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.21/277.60. Another 5.21 at 278.46 beat Hendey in the first round. A 5.24/277.43 advanced in round two when Tony McCallum broke, but in the semifinals against Prudhomme, he smoked the tires to a losing 9.29/79.33. The NHRA tour then went to Arizona for the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway. Kenny qualified #2 with a 5.48 at a track record 271.98. He beat Jim Dunn in round one, while a 5.49/267 in round two advanced when Jim White lost a blower on the line. In the semifinals, he slipped to a 5.56/268.17, losing to eventual winner Larson's 5.43/268. At the season-ending World Finals at Pomona, Bernstein did not end his Funny Car career as he would have liked. He qualified #4 with a 5.32/278.46, but in the first round, against Jerry Caminito, he lost with a 7.30/184.84. In the season-long NHRA points chase, he finished third behind Larson and Prudhomme. In the IHRA standings, he finished #7, even though he only ran two events. Some drivers would have loved to have seasons like that, but it was below his expectations for Kenny. Set 5.257 national record at Memphis 89. Ran 276.75 at 89 Big Bud Shootout. Photo from Indy 1989.

Notes: In January '80, ND reported that at the Fremont Opener, Raymond Beadle ran 5.92/244. Beadle ran at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. The car turned out to be a handful there as he lost to John Force in the opening round, where the car went into a wheelstand, and he had to shut down. He again was forced to shut down in his second race when he got out of shape against Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian." At Pomona, the team waived its points for the NHRA Winternationals. Beadle qualified #3 with a 6.06/243.90. He went into a wheelstand in the first round and shut off, giving Colson the win. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Division 4 Opener on March 9, and the "Blue Max" ran Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.24/233.76 to win over Billy Meyer's close 6.27/230. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with a 6.13 and, in the first round, beat Tom McEwen with a 5.99/238.09. In the second round, a 6.06/227.27 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/233. A piston-burning 6.11/207.85 beat Tom Ridings' 6.46/180 in Joe Pisano's car in the semifinals. This put him into the final against Don Prudhomme, who had just run 5.93 in the other semifinal race. Beadle tried hard in the final, but his 6.17/231.95 was good for the runner-up spot to the "Snake's" 5.98/238. He went to Darlington the following week (March 23) and cleaned up. The only thing he didn't get was the pole. He qualified #2 with a 6.42 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.28 beat a tire-smoking Burgin, and a 6.29 beat John Force in the semifinals. In the final, he met Dale Pulde. Raymond capped off the weekend by running Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.06/237.46 to win the event. He then set Low ET and Top Speed while winning the second NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley on March 30. The win put the "Blue Max" into the lead in NHRA points. Things did not go well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where the team failed to qualify. A best of 6.23/238.09 failed to better the 6.18 "bump." Raymond toured England this year, too. He came out with a new Omni to run the second half of the season.

Notes: Prudhomme started the year with his venerable Arrow but debuted this Plymouth Horizon in April at OCIR for the 64 car show. In the opening round, Don ran a track record 5.96 at 238 to beat John Force. He made it into the final against Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian." The "Snake" got crossed up and shut off while Colson ran 6.48 for the win. On April 20, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.94/238.72, but rain interrupted the race, and Don could not run on the rain date since he chose to go to Baton Rouge instead for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He would've been better off at Fremont since his best of 6.21/235.60 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Baton Rouge. On May 17, he was at OCIR for the third NHRA Division 6 race. Once again, he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.03/238.09. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.18. He then went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. Prudhomme ran well, hitting a 6.04 in the semifinals over Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," and in the final, he set Low ET with a 5.97 at 235.60 over Colson's 6.70/229. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.21/231.95 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Colson. Don improved to 6.08/222.77 to beat the "Hawaiian's" 6.20/237. Unfortunately, he was shut off on the line with an oil leak in round two, advancing Billy Meyer into the semifinals. He did not compete at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, choosing to run the AHRA Nationals at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas instead. Don qualified #1 with a questionable 5.92. He then ran 6.19 and 6.28 over Kenny Bernstein and Tom McEwen to reach the final, where he faced John Collins. A final 6.18/229 gave him the victory over an up-in-smoke Collins at 7.24. He was back on the NHRA tour for the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown in July. Don qualified #3 with a 6.02/237.46. An opening round 5.99/240.64 beat Bernstein, and he made an easy single in the second round when Dale Pulde was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. Prudhomme faced Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max" in the semifinals, and Don's 6.05 beat the "Max's" ailing 6.85. Once again, he found himself in the final. There he faced and beat Meyer's 6.58/192 with a 6.10/238.05. Prudhomme was back at Union Grove in July for the NHRA Division 3 race. While he didn't reach the final, he did set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.15. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42. This time, the "Snake" really had to work for it. He qualified #2 with a 6.20 behind Pulde's 6.12 in the "War Eagle." A first-round 6.23 beat Gary Burgin's 6.44, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Len Imbrogno could not show. The final came down to Pulde and Prudhomme. Don got the win with a 6.26, stopping Pulde's out-of-shape run. August started with Prudhomme winning the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City. The "Snake" did not have the quickest car (Tom Hoover did at 6.05), but he was the most consistent, running 6.15 and 6.14 (at 232.55) to reach the final. There, he faced Billy Graham, and a 6.13/231.93 gave him yet another win over Graham's 6.25/219. He did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He was runner-up to McEwen at the Funny Car Nationals at US 131. There, his final round, 6.31/206.89 lost to the "Mongoose's" 6.17/233. On August 18, he was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Don was the only 5-second qualifier with a 5.95 (Low ET). In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover's 6.52 in the "Pacemaker" Firebird. Don was reinstated when officials found out that Hoover was driving two cars. It didn't do Prudhomme much good as he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Bill Spevacek. He had problems with his race car transporter on the way to Indianapolis and had to be towed in. He was still able to run a 6.07/234.37 to qualify #10. In round one, he beat Colson with a 6.12/234.98, but a second-round 6.27/226.75 lost to Meyer's 6.18/234. Ran 6.07/236.22 NHRA Indianapolis 9/80.

Notes: Won IHRA Springnationals Bristol 1990. | K.C. Spurlock was at the Texas Motorplex in January making his licensing runs. He ran 5.56/223 while getting the license. He then went to Pomona and showed 'em how it's done. He qualified last with a 5.57/255.60. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier John Force. John probably thought he had K.C. covered easily, but Spurlock ran 5.32/272.14 to trailer Force's 5.42/278. In round two, a 5.37/263.00 beat Ray Sherman's 5.61/270, and in the semifinals, his 5.39/276.49 beat Bruce Larson's 5.54/267. Everyone was now looking at this guy when he faced veteran Ed McCulloch in the final. Ed had run as quick as 5.27 in the first round, but his semifinal win came with only a 5.89. Spurlock's 5.78/186.64 won in the final over McCulloch, who smoked the tires and shut off. It was quite the Funny Car debut for K.C. Of course, everyone wondered if it was just a flash in the pan when the teams showed up at Firebird for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. But Spurlock continued to impress, running 5.30/276.15 for the "pole." He beat Gary Densham in the opening round before losing to Mark Oswald's 5.37/275 in round two with a quicker 5.36/276.32. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals early in March. Spurlock's 5.45/269.78 qualified #7 and an improved 5.40/277.00 in the opening round beat Jim Murphy. But an even stronger 5.34/275.48 in round two lost to Larson's 5.31/265. He made it into another final at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals at Gainesville. He qualified #3 with a 5.36/270.64, and in round one, his 5.39/266.11 advanced when Rune Fjeld shut off with tire shake. Another 5.39 at 268 beat Jim Dunn in round two, and in the semifinals, Force overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Spurlock moved on with a 5.51/259. Once again, he was up against McCulloch in an NHRA final, but this time the "Ace" came through for the win. His 5.33/267 beat Spurlock's 5.40/273 runner-up effort. Things didn't go well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.37/275.90, but he blew it after Al Hofmann fouled against him in the first round. K.C. stayed in it, got out of shape, and crossed the centerline, disqualifying himself. K.C.'s best times this year were a 5.199 low qualifying and Low ET effort at Englishtown and 282.13 at Memphis.

Notes: Won IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas International Motor Speedway in early June by defeating Pat Foster. Richard ran 6.37/225.00 against Pat's 6.40/227.27. Came out with flamed paint job later in the year. Ran 6.671/213.27 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge 8/72. | Tharp won the Miami Funny Car race on Jan 9. It was a sixteen-car field and in the final, the "Max" dropped Jerry Jokerst's Firebird. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, almost 40 cars showed for the sixteen spots and Tharp headed the list of qualifiers with a 6.70. In the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.57 beating Jerry Ruth. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the second round and crossed the centerline while racing Gene Snow. The team did a lot of match racing for a cash guarantee, but when they showed up at the national events, they were a team worth watching. On March 6 they were at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. Harry Schmidt and Tharp woke up to find that someone had "borrowed" their transporter. The police found it in time for the team to race, but a complete engine plus an extra blower and injector were gone. They had to borrow parts to race. After piecing together an engine, Richard goes out and runs a 6.62, good enough for the pole. A first-round 6.81 beat Jake Johnston's 6.87. In round two the "Max" got a solo when Don Schumacher broke a rear end. In the semifinals, a 6.61 (Low ET) beat a crossed up Arnie Behling in the "Ramchargers" Demon. In the final, Tharp grabbed the victory with a 6.86 over Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto.

Notes: Ed had the most dominant funny car during 1972, winning the NHRA Winternationals, Gatornationals, Springnationals, and Nationals. He also won the Bakersfield March Meet, driving his former car, the Jim Murphy owned "Holy Smokes" Cuda, and was the runner-up to Don Schumacher at the NHRA Summernationals. He also won the huge Seattle Seafair Funny Car Nationals in August. This car made its debut at Fremont on January 2 for the New Year's Funny Car race. On its first full pass it ran a 6.9. Ed qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.94, but he lost to Bill Leavitt in the first round. At the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline, 40 Funny Cars tried to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Ed ran 6.71 to qualify #2. He beat Henry Harrison in Mickey Thompson's Vega in the first round, but lost to Pat Foster driving Barry Setzer's Vega in round two. He won the NHRA Winternationals by qualifying #6 with a 6.93/213 and beating Jerry Ruth's 6.96/209 in the first round, with a 6.90/218. In round two, he set Low ET with a 6.65/217.91 over Butch Maas' 6.84/216. Ed had an easy run in the semifinals when Jake Johnston fouled against him. In the final, he faced Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Pulde had problems and slowed to a 7.22 while McCulloch scored the victory with a 6.68/215.82. He drove his old car to a win at the Bakersfield March Meet. He was back in the Demon the following week (March 12) at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Ed lasted until round two before he got out of shape and lost to Harrison. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.65 qualified #3 and in the opening round his 6.63/220.04 beat Lew Arrington's 6.74/213. That was followed by a 6.69 in round two over Joe Jacono's 6.87 and he got a solo in the semifinal when the Setzer Vega caught fire behind the line and was unable to run. He faced Larry Arnold in the final and McCulloch ran 6.54/224.43 to take the victory over Arnold's 6.68/218. The month of April started with a visit to Miami-Hollywood for its Big Go South race. It was an eight-car field and Ed qualified #1 with a 6.87/208. He beat Harry Hudson in round one, and he set a track record 6.71 in the semifinals while beating Paul Smith. He definitely had the edge in the final where he beat Ed O'Brien for the money. He then went to West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. Once again, he ended up in the final, but this time he lost to Bill Leavitt. He was runner-up again at OCIR's Big Four Championships in early May. It was a 32 car show and Ed started his run to the final by beating Bob Hawkins in the "Blue Blazer" Pinto. In round two, he beat another Pinto, the "Keeling and Clayton" car driven by Tom Ferraro. In round three, Mert Littlefield broke on the line against him. McCulloch then ran 6.98/197.36 to turn back Twig Zeigler and move into the final where he faced the killer car of Setzer. Pat Foster had driven it to a track record 6.52 in the semifinals so Ed was the underdog for their race. Sure enough, Foster shot to a 6.65/225 for the win as Ed smoked the tires and had to settle for the runner-up. On the final day of the Drag Racing Olympics race at Union Grove, Ed was running well. He beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals with a 6.52/216.86 and was set to race Don Prudhomme in the final when the "Snake" lost fire. McCulloch soloed for the win with a 6.50/217.91. He ran at the AHRA Springnationals in Denver, but failed to reach the finals. Things went much better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.78 and an opening round 6.73 beat Gary Henderson in the "Super Duster.” In round two his 6.79/206 beat Jake Johnston in Gene Snow's second car and a shut off 7.99 advanced in the semifinals when Foster fouled. This put Ed into the final with Leonard Hughes who qualified #2. In their race, Hughes got the jump and it looked like that was it for Ed, but the Cajun 'Cuda started to smoke the tires and McCulloch's 6.85/217.39 got the win light over Hughes' 7.08/196. 1972 NHRA Supernationals, OMS

Notes: On November 1, Richard was at Amarillo to get his Funny Car license. Jake Johnston was there driving the "Blue Max" and it was in this car that Tharp made his licensing runs. At the NHRA Supernationals on November 22 at Ontario Motor Speedway, Richard was the new driver behind the wheel of the "Blue Max." He qualified #9 with a 7.19 and in the first round, was up against low qualifier Don Prudhomme. Tharp was up for the task, running a 6.96 over the "Snake" who had transmission problems. In round two, he beat Rich Siroonian's 7.16 in John Mazmanian's car with a 7.12. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, a steering link broke and he had to shut off giving Larry Arnold a free ride into the final. He won the OCIR final race of '70 on December 5. It was an eight-car show and Tharp dominated. A first-round 6.94/210 beat Stan Shiroma while in the semifinals, his Low ET shot of 6.83/216.34 beat Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster." In the final, a 6.91/216.94 snagged him his first Funny Car victory. He ended his season at Irwindale on December 12 for the Toys for Tots race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 7.31, but he shut off in his first-round race against Dale Pulde. | Tharp's best NHRA time was 6.966.

Notes: Roy ran a career-best (up to this point) 6.130 at 237.46 to qualify #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen in the opening round of competition. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where he ran 6.31/230.76 to qualify #7 in the eight-car field. Harris' first-round 6.35 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.12. At the fourth NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove, Harris reached the final against Al Segrini, but had problems and shut down to 9.50-78.12 for the runner-up spot. He earlier had set Top Speed at 229.00. Roy was back at Maple Grove for the "Jungle Jim" Memorial Funny Car Championships. In the first round, his 6.37/214.28 lost to Tom Prock's 6.35/217. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. There, he finished runner-up to Kenny Bernstein. Indy didn't go the greatest for Harris as his best of 6.21/239.36 left him as the fifth alternate for the NHRA US Nationals. The 6.130/239.36 were his NHRA national event best times for 1979. Where did Roy run 6.03/241.93?

Notes: Leroy ran the first six-second run with a 6.95 pass on June 30, 1970, at New York National while testing Firestone tires. At Detroit in July 1970, the team ran 6.96/206, followed by a 6.99/202, and then burned to the ground. The team replaced the car, ran the first NHRA 6-second at Indy 9/70 at 6.92, and then bettered it with a 6.85. They also ran 6.92 at US 30. - Danny White | The Israeli Rocket took Funny Car Eliminator at the 1970 Springnationals (Dallas) with a winning 7.03/208.33. Though reputedly having the better car at the later Indy Nationals, he smoked it and dropped the final against Schumacher in Funny Car Eliminator. - RT | The Ramchargers' Challenger debuted in Jan at the AHRA Winternationals, where Goldstein's first run ever with the car was a 7.48/204.08 in qualifying. He lasted until the second round when he fouled away a 7.44/200.88 and lost to Larry Reyes, who ran a 7.54 in the Hawaiian. Then the team went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and failed to qualify. On March 8, Goldstein was at Lions for the second of ten AHRA Grand American races. While the "Ramchargers" didn't win or even make the final round, Leroy set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.14/209.79. He was at Rockingham for AHRA's third race, the Pro-Am Championships, but he fouled in round two against Clyde Morgan. More bad luck came for the team at the fourth AHRA Grand American at Frontier International. Leroy looked like a sure bet to make it to the final after beating Dean Dillingham in the first round with a 7.79/145.86. In round two, a 7.49/173.54 took out Mart Higginbotham, and a semifinal 7.42/197.80 beat Gene Snow's 7.77/173. But in that semifinal race, he lost a motor, and Snow was reinstated for the final. Near the end of May, Goldstein was in Detroit for the AHRA Grand American. Once again, he lost in the semifinals, despite a stout 7.31/198.72. Goldstein was long overdue for a win when the team pulled into Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals on June 7. Once again, things didn't quite go their way. A 7.41 in the first round beat Jay Howell, but in round two, his 7.63/175.78 lost to eventual winner Snow's 7.39/203. The following week (June 14), everything clicked. The team had just installed a Detroit Locker; this was the first time out with the new rear end. Leroy qualified #2 with a 7.10/210.34 at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A first-round 7.14 advanced when Bernie Williams fouled, while in round two, his 7.24/204.54 beat Bobby Rowe's 7.74/134 in the "Super Duster." He stepped up to a 7.07/207.37 to beat Leonard Hughes in the semifinals. In the final, he ran Snow. Leroy ran Low ET at 7.03/208.33 to take the victory over Gene's 7.56/148. A few days later, he was at New York National. On Friday, June 19, he warmed up for the race to be run on Saturday. His warm-up passes shocked the onlookers. He ran 7.11/208.42, then a 7.07/206.42, and finally a 7.02/209.92. As good as these times were, Saturday's were even better. It was an eight-car show, and Leroy won his first round with the sport's first generally accepted "six," a 6.98/208.80. In the semifinals, he backed it up with a 6.97/206.42 that beat Jim Liberman, and in the final, an even better 6.95/209.78 won the meet over Terry Hedrick. They were also going to run on Sunday, but it was rained out. In July, he faced Fritz Callier in a best of three match race at US 30, where Leroy won all three races, running a best of 6.93. This car made its last appearance on Sunday, July 19, in Detroit. Leroy set a track record 6.96 at 206.88 in the first round while beating the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. He got a single in the second round and ran 6.99/202, but the Challenger burst into flames at the finish line. The car burnt for almost an hour once the magnesium caught fire; there was no putting it out. Nothing left of the car was salvageable, but Goldstein was not hurt. The "Ramchargers" had a new car built, and it was 10 inches narrower and 100 lbs. lighter than the car that burnt. The best NHRA times for Goldstein this year were his great 6.832/212.76 at Indy (Bob Frey).

Notes: Also Ran NHRA's fastest speed at 264.86 at the World Finals. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Prudhomme started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He ran 5.98 to qualify #6 in the eight-car field. John Force banged a blower in the first round, and Don advanced with a 5.99/238.09. In the semifinal, he ran 6.04/229, but he had gotten out of shape and crossed the centerline. His opponent, John Collins, advanced to the final with a tire-smoking 9.13. The following weekend, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Nothing went right there for the "Snake," as the best run he could make was a 7.92/111.96. Obviously, that failed to qualify. After that bad showing, things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Don's 5.80/252.10 qualified #11. He improved to 5.78/251 in the opening round to beat Force. In round two, the car went into heavy tire shake, and he shut off against Collins, who advanced with a 5.74. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 6 for the Coor's Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, tire shake did him in again, where he clicked it off to 9.45 in a first-round loss to Johnny West's 6.59. Shortly after that, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Prudhomme qualified #7 with a 5.90/253.52. He continued to look strong in round one, where his 5.88/252.95 beat Jim Head's 6.07/246. In the second round, his opponent, Ron Correnti, sheared a fuel pump and the "Snake" advanced with a 5.94/249.58. But that was it, as an off-pace 6.12/204.73 lost to the eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 5.75/254 in the semifinal. It was no secret that Prudhomme was not running up to par, nowhere was it more evident than at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He blew an engine during qualifying. He blew up another one in the first round, while beating Al Segrini. Yet another engine was lost on a 5.83/237 in round two that beat Mark Oswald's 5.85/257 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He was supposed to run Dale Pulde in the semifinal, but he gave up and packed up for the home as he was out of parts.

Notes: After Don Prudhomme and Kenny Bernstein switched to Top Fuel for the '90 season, everyone expected this team to dominate. Things didn't work out that way. Mark started '90 by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.29/279.41 (Top Speed). He lost to Art Hendey in the first round. At Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Mark's 5.40/275.06 qualified #8. In the first round, he had a close race with Ed McCulloch that saw his 5.37/277.77 defeat Ed's 5.37/265. In round two, another 5.37 at 275.48 beat K.C. Spurlock's slightly quicker 5.36/276. Both he and opponent Bruce Larson had problems in their semifinal race, but Larson's tire-smoking 6.43/147 beat Oswald, who shut down to a 10.97/71.03. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals in Texas. Mark qualified #4 with a 5.32/282.22 (Top Speed). An even better 5.30/278.37 in the first round, beat Gary Densham, and he got a solo in round two when Tom Hoover could not show. Mark ran a wheelstanding 7.29 to advance. In the semifinals, his 5.41/283.10 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.28/278. The team's next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.36/276.41 qualified #4, and a 5.63/231.24 in the opening round beat Frank Kramberger's 5.68/261. But Oswald lost to eventual winner McCulloch in round two. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car show; his 5.35/278.12 (Top Speed) qualified #6. His times were not great, but Oswald made it into the final. He started by running 5.48/272.23 in the opening round to beat Jim White in the "Hawaiian." Both he and Larson smoked the tires in the semifinal, with Mark's 5.62/267.69 coming out on top over Bruce's 5.86/247. He faced John Force in the final, and the two put on a great race as both ran 5.43 (Oswald at 277.26), but Force crossed the stripe first for the victory. Atlanta was a race Oswald would rather forget. The car kept dropping cylinders on every pass. He "only" qualified #14 with a 5.64/277.34, and he was out after the first round as McCulloch's 5.35/267 beat his 5.48/268.81 and went on to win. But as bad as Atlanta had been, Memphis was the exact opposite. Mark qualified #7 with a 5.36/281.16, beating Johnny West in the first round. He had a close race with Spurlock in round two, where both ran 5.37 (Oswald at 278), but Mark crossed the line first. A 5.40/265 in the semifinals stopped Larson's 5.50, and Oswald found himself in the final against McCulloch. He got some payback from the last couple of losses to the "Ace" by running a 5.42/279.15 in the final over Ed's 5.47/265. Baton Rouge was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Cajun Nationals. Oswald qualified #3 with a 5.43/273.14. He beat Del Denton in the first round, and despite smoking the tires to a 6.85/145 in round two, he won when Neely fouled. But he smoked the tires once again in the semifinals and lost to Richard Hartman. He also made it as far as the semifinals at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #6 with a 5.44/272.06 and, in round one, beat Hartman's 5.52/260 with another 5.44 at 274.55. Larson fouled against him in round two, and Mark advanced with a 5.45/274.30. But in the semifinals, Oswald fouled against White. The team then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where Mark's 5.45/268.97 qualified #4. Things went fairly well for the team. A 5.49 in the opening round beat Al Hofmann, and a second-round 5.47/267 beat Tom Hoover. Mark's driving in the semifinal got the car into the final as his 5.43/268.41 defeated Larson's 5.42/269. Oswald even had lane choice over Force for their final round meeting, but Mark had problems and shut down to 10.92/70.15 while Force won with a 5.40/267. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1988. Also 5.335 at Seattle 1988. Won 1988 Englishtown Summernationals. | Don started his '88 season by competing at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. An eight-car Funny Car show was run and the "Snake" qualified #4 with a 5.62. He beat Chris Lane in the first round, with a 5.69/257.14, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.38/104 loss to Ed McCulloch's 5.73/255. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.60. Kenny Bernstein beat him in the first round. Things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where a 5.48/262 qualified #6. He beat Darrell Amberson in the first round, and in round two, a 5.42/264 got past Scott Kalitta. But in the semifinals against Mark Oswald, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires. Prudhomme didn't run any of the IHRA races this year, so the next big event he was at was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta where in the second round, his 5.78 lost to Bernstein's 5.73. In mid-May, Don was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He was a bit off as he only qualified #15 with a 5.80 and he lost to Bernstein in the first round. Bernstein seemed to have Prudhomme's number as at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Kenny stopped Don in the second round. It wasn't Bernstein that kept him from victory at the NHRA Springnationals; it was tire smoke. After qualifying #6 with a 5.56, he smoked the tires in the second round and lost to Mike Dunn in Joe Pisano's car. Things had to get better for the "Snake" and they did in a big way at the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.54/261.70. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.50 and another 5.50/262 beat Bruce Larson in round two. In the semifinals, a 5.55/267 beat Johnny West's 5.68 in the "Hawaiian." In the final, he was up against Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Don prevailed, running a 5.44/260 for the win. So after that, he went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, and wins that as well. There he qualified #2 with a 5.47/257.36. A first-round 5.47/255 beat Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" while in round two, a 5.54/254 beat Oswald. In the semifinals, he dropped back into the 5.4's with a 5.49/257 over Dale Pulde. In the final, he met with long time Funny Car racer Bruce Larson. Bruce had been running 5.5's and in the final he slipped to a 5.63/260 that finished runner-up to Don's track record 5.41 at 257. On August 7, he was at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. The track was great with no less than six cars qualifying with 5.3 times. Leading them all was Prudhomme's 5.30/268.33. Don backed up the ET for a new NHRA record. Unfortunately, after beating John Martin in the first round, the "Snake" smoked the tires in the second round and lost to Tharp.
