Notes: Tim had gotten his fuel FC license at the Texas Motorplex early in the year. He ran 5.50 and 5.47 on his licensing runs. He bought K.C. Spurlock's Avenger and went FC racing. He made his FC National debut at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Only sixteen cowed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, he ran 5.34 and 5.29/282.84. The 5.29 got him the #15 spot in the field. He improved to 5.14/275.14 in the opening round wasn't enough as he lost to Richard Hartman's 5.11/282. Wilkerson really showed them at Houston, where his 5.08/276.32 qualified #2 behind John Force's 4.97/298 for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 5.45/258.69 was all that was needed in the first round to beat Gary Bolger, but he had problems in round two and shut down to 10.08/80.81 in a loss to Del Worsham's 7.35/121. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 5th at 5.06/297. Defeated Dean Skuza in round one before falling to Cruz Pedregon's holeshot in Round 2. Became the seventh member of the Castrol Four Second Club a month later (October 26) with a 4.945 at Pomona, Calif.

Notes: Lombardo started the '78 season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at OCIR. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the final with a 7.25. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.25/236.22 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.23/238. But in the opening round of eliminations, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 6.93/205.47 loss to Tim Kushi's 6.47/223. Lombardo then won the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont in April. He set Low ET at 6.18 and a 6.33/213.77 grabbed the win when John Force broke in the final. John also set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.27/231.95. But once again, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Tripp Shumake. Not long after that (June 4), he was at Portland for the NHRA Division 6 race. Only six FC's showed, and he qualified #1 with a 6.36/202.24. A 6.33/213.27 beat Nick Harmon in the opening round, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal. He won that by beating Twig Zeigler's 6.52/221 in the final with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.25/229.00. In Mid-June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. John ran 6.24/227.84 to qualify #8, and an opening-round 6.28/222.77 beat an out-of-shape Tom Anderson. In round two, Bob Pickett's 6.46/221 fell to Lombardo's 6.29/229.59. The car stayed consistent in the semifinals, running a 6.26/233.16, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.17/230. On July 1, he won the OCIR Nitro Championships, setting Low ET at 6.05 along the way. He made a stop at Seattle for a best of three match race against Gordie Bonin. Lombardo won two straight with a 6.23 best. John then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.12/240.64 qualified #4, and he beat a fouling Tom Hoover in the first round. In round two, he ran another 6.12 at 236.84 to beat Gordie Bonin, but the car slowed to a 6.33/216.34 in the semifinals that lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.19/236. On July 29, John was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.20, and he set Low ET in round one, where his 6.07/223 defeated Dennis Geisler. Unfortunately, the car broke in round two against Dave Condit John had a great US Nationals, running steady 6.0s in eliminations, but lost a step and the match to Prudhomme in the semis. Best NHRA ET was 6.057 at Indy, where he also duplicated his 240.64 best.

He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.34/223.32, and another 6.34/223.32 beat Pat Foster in the opening round of eliminations. Unfortunately, in the semifinal, the "Super Shops" car broke against the eventual winner John Lombardo. Shortly after(May 13), he was at OCIR for the next NHRA Division Seven race. A 6.19/229.00 qualified #3, and he improved to 6.05/235.60 in the opening round to beat Foster. But a semifinal 6.35/230.17 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.00/242. Notes: Anderson qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.26/260.11. He had problems in the first round against Chuck Etchells and shut off. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.36/294.21 qualified #11. He pulled off a big upset in the first round when both he and John Force smoked their tires. Randy recovered first, and his 5.96/190.83 beat Force's 6.23/222. In round two, he pulled off another upset where his 5.04/308.11 defeated Cruz Pedregon's 5.23/285. I'm sure that put a smile back on Force's face!. In the semi-final, Anderson lost to eventual winner Etchells. Gainesville was his next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. Randy qualified #5 at 4.96/272.64. Jim Dunn replaced Larry Frazier as tuner.

Notes: Ken started the season with a big win on January 26 at an eight-car show at Irwindale. It was his first time out driving the "Mr. Norm" car. He started his March to victory with a first-round 7.58/197.36 (Top Speed) over Clyde Morgan's Javelin. In the semifinals, a 7.62/196.06 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.87/185. And in the final, he set Low ET with a 7.49/196.06 to beat Charlie Allen's 7.54/191. He qualified #15 at Pomona with a 7.74 for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran a best of 7.44 in round two while beating Jake Johnston's quicker 7.40. Gene Snow set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.30 over Ken's 7.47. He was back at Irwindale on February 15 for another eight-car show. Safford qualified #1 with a 7.54/179.64. In the first round, he beat Morgan's 7.86/185 with a 7.56/188.66. A 7.45/197.80 beat the "New Breed in the semifinal." In the final, he faced Danny Ongais in the Mickey Thompson Mustang. Ken won with a 7.35/197.36 over Ongais' 7.60/169. Early in March, he met Curtis Wasson's "Superstitious" Camaro for a best of three match race at St. Louis. Safford won all three races and reset the track record twice. A 4.83 on the 1/8 mile track at 163 was the first record run in the first race. He bettered that with a 4.77/161 in the second race. His third run wasn't too bad either, a 4.81. He had another match race on the 15th against Bruce Larson's new '70 Camaro at York US 30, which he won three straight with a best of 7.44/195.22. Things didn't go as well at the end of the month (March 29) at Gary, Indiana, where he lost his match race to Arnie Behling driving Mickey Thompson's new Boss 429-powered Maverick. These two would meet up again on April 12 at Alton, where Behling won their match once again. The M/T car continued to have its way over the "Mr. Norm" car at their next race in Thompson, Ohio. There Arnie reset the track record and won three straight. Revenge came at Martin, Mich., US 131 on May 16, where Safford defeated Behling two straight. Ken won the first match with a 7.44/193.13 and was awarded the match race victory when Behling had blown a rear end and could not run. Ken opened many eyes when the mostly match race terror qualified #1 at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.04/204.54. Unfortunately, he went out in the first round, with handling problems, and Ray Alley's 7.26 beat his 7.215. Late in June, he was back at US 131 for an eight-car show where he set Low ET with a 7.04/202.70 in the first round, over Allen. In the second round, he ran a 7.11/198.67 over Pat Foster, but in the third race against Tommy Grove, he lost the motor and the race. Safford set a 7.16 track record at Rockford in July. Late in July, Ken beat Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" two straight in a match race at York US 30. At the second annual Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, he ran well. He beat Sid Foster in his first race with a 7.40. He fouled away a 7.32 in his second race and lost to Don Schumacher. In his third race, he won with a 7.35 when Grove fouled against him. Eighteen FCs ran the first round at the PHR Championships, with the eight lowest ETs transferring into round two. Ken's ET failed to make the round two cut. Safford was one of four Funny Car's running at Minneapolis late in August. In his first race, he ran 7.17/207.37 to beat Bryan Teal's 7.58/181 in the "Super Chief." A 7.15/203.61 beat John Collins, who shut off in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in his next race. In the third race, he broke a rod and lost to Tom Hoover. - Ron Howard | Mr. Norm defeated USA-1 three straight with a best of 7.44/195.22 at York on 3/05/70 - James Ibusuki

Notes: US 30 advertisement claimed 6.84/228. Maybe the 6.84, but no way on the 228 (maybe 218). AKA the Band Aid car (for the wrap-around white stripe used to mask some fiberglas repair). Mid 1969 Body replaced original one burned off in Texas.

Notes: Won INDY. Silver and Black Vette. Also 6,264 232.55 at 78 Winters and 231.95 at 78 Springnationals. Ran 6.05/235.60 in big Indy win over Prudhomme. This car was sold to Dick Moritz then to Jamie Hopheimer/Whit Bazemore and to Donnie Holbrook and to Troy Ray. | McEwen started his season at the OCIR Super Bowl event in February Unfortunately, he had problems against Raymond Beadle driving the Blue Max" and shut down to a 10.54 loss in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tom's 6.26/232.55 qualified #5. He beat Dave Condit's 6.45/216 in the first round, with a 6.32/220 and in round two his 6.42/216 advanced when Gary Burgin fouled. It was a good old "Snake vs. Mongoose" semifinal that saw the "Goose" have problems and slow to 7.63/137 loss to Don Prudhomme's 6.41/229. He then laid low and the "English Leather" Corvette was not seen again until early May when he showed up at Seattle for the NHRA Division Six opener. It was a eight-car field and his 6.29/194.80 qualified #3. He improved by a tenth in round one where his 6.19/216.86 defeated Jim Moore's 6.79/164. He blasted low qualifier,Gordie Bonin in the emi-final with a 6.22/221.67 that put the Firebird's 6.41/230 on the trailer. He faced the "Snake" in the final and the two old pals had a great race that saw Don get the victory with a 6.11/238 over Tom's 6.18/217.91.The following week(May 13), he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race.A 6.20 qualified #4 but in the opening round, he extremely late 6.07/217.91 lost to Henry Harrison's 6.29/229.Shortly after that, he was at Portland for the Oregon Open. It was supposed to be a eight-car show but a field was a couple cars short.McEwen got to solo in the first round and he did, running 6.19/206.89.For some reason, he was given another solo in the semifinal and this time he shut down at 6.95. Once again he was up against Prudhomme in the final. This time the two didn't get a chance to race as Tom had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure so the "Snake" solo'ed with a 10.17 for the win. His next stop was Detroit Dragway for the UDRA North American Grandnationals. All cars ran the first round "qualifying" that had the eight lowest ET cars reguardless of winning or losing advance in the first round of actual competition.Tom set low Et with a 6.23. In the first round of actual competition, he advanced with a 6.34/194.38. In the semifinal, the car again lost oil pressure and the "Goose" had to shut it down on the line against Tom Prock. He ended the month of May at the three day Drag Racing Olympics at Union Grove. He made sure everyone knew that he was there. On Friday, May 27, he qualified for the final four with a 6.36. In the semifinal, he dropped the Pete Williams driven, "Chi-Town Hustler's" 6.32 with a 6.29. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and the results were the same.Don's 6.14/229 beat his 6.19/221.67. On Saturday, he qualified for the final four with a 6.23.There were eighteen cars attempting to qualify.Tom's time was the third best. But this time the "Snake" got to him in the semifinal.Don's 6.10/236 trailed the Corvette's 6.22/223.32. On Sunday, the field swelled to twenty four cars.Tom qualified for the final four with a second quickest 6.24. He beat Bob Pickett's 6.43/225 in the semifinal with a 6.32/201.34.Low and behold, he faced Prudhomme in yet another final round. But this time, the "Snake" got out of shape and had to shut off while McEwen ran 6.28/222.22 for the victory. It was then off to St.Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals.A 6.41/211.27 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He beat a tire smoking Gene Snow in the opening round with a 6.48/212.76. In the semifinal, both he and Tom Hoover smoked the tires but the "Goose's" 7.16 came out on top. He faced his protege, John Collins in the final. The two had a good race with the student getting the better of the teacher.Collins' 6.46 took the win over McEwen's 6.67 runner-up effort. That was followed by a trip to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The car got the award for best appearing. This car was more than just show though, and Tom proved it by qualifying second with a 6.16/217.91 behind Prudhomme's 6.07/240.These two would meet in the final(what else is new).McEwen opened up eliminations with a 6.31/216.86 over Bonin's 6.49/223.A second round 6.25/215.31 dispatched Billy Meyer's ailing ride.John Lombardo's 6.26/233 fell to his 6.17/230.76 in the semifinal.Problem was,Prudhomme had won his semifinal heat with a 6.07/241.Tom needed to pick up a tenth for his final round race. He didn't.The two ran almost exactly the same times they had run in the semifinals, with Don's 6.07/240 getting the win over Tom's 6.17/231.95.By this time, McEwen must have been tired of playing second fiddle to the "Snake".The week following the Springnationals(June 18), he was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals. There was no Prudhomme in site as he was racig elsewhere.Tom's 6.36/219 qualified second for the eight-car field behind Snow's 6.26/216.After that, McEwen was unstoppable. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.73 in the "Blue Max" in the first round with a 6.36/219.Like a bracket racer, he ran another 6.36 in the semifinal to beat Hoover's 6.42. He went up against Johh White in the final, and even though he slowed a bit,to a 6.39/210, he won easily as White had problems and shut down. Both the "Snake" and the "Mongoose" were at Martin, Michigan on June 24 for the NHRA Division Three race.Tom's 6.18/217.91 qualified second to Prudhomme's 6.09/237.But the two would never run each other.Tom's easy 6.31 in the first round beat alternate,Paul Radici. In the semifinal, his 6.22/216.86 got back by Tom Anderson's 6.20/215.The "Snake" would go on to win. Best NHRA speed was 236.84 at Ontario. Formerly listed 241.28. We need to confirm if the Goose ran that speed in 1978 and where.

Notes: Second quickest at Indy only to Prudhomme's unreal 5.63. Second fastest that year only to Billy Meyer's 254.95 (if you discount a questionable 255 from Prudhomme at an AHRA race). The Indy 254.23 on September. 4, 1982, was the third entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car. | Ken made his debut in fuel Funny Car at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals. He knew his stuff as he qualified #11 with a 6.05. Unfortunately, he slowed to a 6.36 in the first round, that lost to Tom Anderson's 6.34. In August, he was at US 131 Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He lasted until the semifinals when his quicker 6.03 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.07 in the "Blue Max."

Notes: McEwen was at Fontana on September 25, where he made three exhibition runs. His times were 9.63/152.54, 9.60/154.63, and an out-of-shape 11.89/145.16. Rear-engine blown fuel. This replaced the Cuda he crashed earlier in the year. Tom sold the car to Fred Goeske in 1966. The photo is actually from early 1966 but reflects the late 1965 second car. Don Montgomery's "Dragster and Funny Car Memories" book quotes unattributed times of 8.88/178.92. Per Chris Martin, Tom ran 8.82/171 at Lions on the night that Dyer ran the great 8.63. Notes: The strip was so bad at Tucson on January 23 that Force qualified last in the eight-car field for the AHRA Winternationals with an 8.58. He lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the first round. At Pomona, Times were a little more normal for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.08/243.90 to qualify #5. In the first round, he improved to a 6.01/238.09 to beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." He round two, his 6.68/196.07 lost to Tom Anderson's 6.11/242. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.03/243.24. But in the opening round against Tim Grose, the car went into heavy tire shake, and John shut it down to an 8.39/104. At the NHRA Gatornationals, John ran an excellent 5.88/240.64 to qualify #3. He beat Al Segrini in the first round with a 6.18/227.27. But in round two, he fouled away a 5.95 against Mike Dunn. Not only had he fouled, but to add insult to injury, he didn't realize it, made a hard run, and blew the motor in the lights. The car went into a fireball that was quickly put out, and he was OK. Early in April, he was at OCIR for its 64-car show. All cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race, he smoked the tires and lost to Henry Harrison. In the second race, he did it again against Billy Meyer and shut down to 10.86. Needless to say, he did not run quick enough to reach the final. OCIR did it again the following week (April 9). The race was run in the same format. In the first race, John's 6.20/225.56 beat an engine-blowing Don Prudhomme. He set Low ET and Top Speed in his second race with a 5.91/248.61 that defeated Gary Densham. He lined up against Meyer in the final, and, unfortunately, he lost to Meyer's 6.06. NHRA held its Southern Nationals in Atlanta on April 17, and it was a hard field to break into as it was only an eight-car field. The drivers who failed to qualify included Ken Bernstein, Beadle, Meyer, Gary Burgin, Dale Pulde, and Mike Dunn. John made the show, running 5.94/241.93 for the #4 spot. In the first round, his 6.12/230.17 lost to Ken Veney's 6.03/233. John set Low ET and Top Speed of the Fuel Wars event at Fremont in April at 5.94/241 in the final but was considered the runner-up as Mike Miller won all three of his races. The other cars were the Pisano car and Dale Pulde. Winner of the OCIR Son of 64 Funny Car 4/83 with a 5.91. He was at Tulsa in early May for the AHRA Springnationals. A 6.88 qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Jim White in the first round. Shortly after, he was in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show; he was the first alternate at 6.10/237.46. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.08/239.36 qualified #12. An opening round 6.01/246.52 beat Bernstein's 6.25/237, but John could not stop and crashed the car into the catch net. The team repaired the car for round two but smoked the tires and shut it off to 10.37/69.82 in a loss to Mark Oswald's 6.18/241 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified in the field's top half (#4) with a 6.23/215.32, but he improved to 6.07/240.01 in the opening round over White. But again, he fell to that dreaded tire smoke in the semifinal, where he lost to Tom McEwen. Early in July, he traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. His 6.06/233.16 qualified #7 for the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.08/240 lost to Mark Oswald's controversial 5.62/240.At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, his 5.94/243.90 qualified #4.He ran 6.01/243.24 in the first round to beat Dunn's 6.11/229 in the "Hawaiian." A great light combined with a 6.03/241 in the second round defeated Veney's quicker 5.96/245.Prudhomme encountered tire shake against him in the semifinal and shut off while Force advanced with a 6.01/247. His string of 6.0s continued into the finals, but the 6.00/245.23 he ran finished runner-up to Oswald's 5.92/251.At the end of the month (July 30), he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 6.22/232.55. He and Beadle had a really close first-round race that saw John's 6.22/238.09 beat the "Blue Max's" 6.22/239. In the semifinal, he fell off to 6.40/193.13, losing to Anderson's 6.16/220. John won a summer match race event at OCIR with a 5.89 in the final. He also ran 5.78 at 249.30 at the OCIR World Finals, ending as runner-up to John Lombardo. He became the 8th and final entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car with a 250.69 pass at NHRA Indianapolis on September 3, 1983. Good stuff on the NHRA tour with competitive runs all over and best times of 5.782 at the OCIR Finals and the 250.69 at Indy. | Video link from AHRA Tucson 1983.

Notes: Kenny Bernstein's car was awarded "best appearing" at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He also showed up with a new crew chief, Leroy Goldstein. Bernstein ran 6.21/231.36 to qualify #13, but he lost to Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but he was the first alternate for the eight-car field with a 6.39 best. But #8 qualifier Tom Anderson blew his engine during qualifying, and Kenny took his spot in the show. In the first round, he had problems against Gary Burgin and shut off to an 8.59 loss. At the NHRA World Finals at Ontario, Bernstein qualified #10 with a 6.19/232.55. In the first round, a tire-smoking shutoff 10.73/71.77 lost to John Collins' 6.13/221.

Notes: Bruce Larson was one of the best Chevrolet funny car racers of all time. The "USA-1" 1967 Camaro was the second funny campaigned by Larson. It was one of the best in the northeast. The car featured a Logghe Stage II chassis and a 427 Chevrolet engine backed by an automatic transmission. The Camaro held the NHRA National record at 7.41 seconds in 1968 when he amazed everyone at SSDI Nats with the Low ET. That run hurt the motor and Bruce had to put in backup motor for the rest of the weekend (still went rounds). The "USA-1" 67 Camaro raced until 1969. Larson now makes exhibition runs with the restored car. (Photos provided by Mike Ditty. Info provided by James Ibusuki and draglist.com) | Capitol Raceway held its Mr. Chevrolet race on August 13 and it was fitting that Larson took the crown. He beat Joe Black in round one, with a 7.83/178.21 while in round two his 7.80/184.94 beat Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette. In the semifinals, he beat Mel Perry with a 7.90/182.18 to move into the final against Dick Bourgeois. Larson took the victory with a final round 7.90/189. Won NE Dragway Funny Car Nats in 68 at 7.71/189.87. Cecil held a best of three match race between Larson and Jim Liberman on October 6. Bruce won the first race with a quick-leaving 7.64/188.28 over JJ's 7.59/187." Jungle Jim's" 7.78/187 won the second race when Larson fouled away an 8.03/183.66. In the deciding race, both ran well, but Liberman's 7.81/183 won the match over Larson's close 7.82/186.72. Bruce set both ends of Maple Grove track record with a 7.62/186.72 in October. On October 13 he faced off against Clare Sanders driving Liberman's #2 car in a best of three match race at Englishtown. He lost the match when he fouled in the first two races although he had run the best time of the two at 7.78. The two came out for one more run and Bruce beat Sanders' 7.88 with a 7.65. The track record was 7.64 at the time. The two had a rematch on November 3 at New England. This time Larson won all three races with times of 8.23/155.97,a track record 7.59 at 184.42 and 7.98/171.42. Sanders was not running well, as his best was 8.23/177. He was at Irwindale on November 9 for the Mopar vs Chevy Funny Car Race. A tire-smoking 8.28/180.36 lost to Charlie Allen in the first round, while an 8.34 in round two lost to Steve Bovan's 8.33 in Nelson Carter's Charger in round two. Bruce got his lone win in round three where he beat Larry Reyes. He lost three straight against Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's "Cuda at Irwindale on November 28. Bruce smoked the tires in the first and third rounds while his best run, a 7.93/182.92 in the second race, lost to Siroonian's 7.88/186. At the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, Bruce broke a pinion shaft in the first round, against Leonard Hughes. In his second race, something in the drivetrain broke and his 8.39/176.81 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.69/193. He was unable to repair for his third race and Mike Burkhart replaced him.

Notes: Larson had his best season ever in '89. He and crew chief Maynard Yingst jelled, and he went on to win the NHRA Funny Car World Championship by winning six events in eleven final round showings. He started the year by qualifying #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.38/269.62. He improved to a 5.32/259.81 in the first round, to beat Don Prudhomme's 5.50/263. Another 5.32 at 256.41 beat John Martin in round two, while in the semifinals, Bruce eased to a 12.89/54.76 to advance when Jim White broke in the "Hawaiian." In the final, he grabbed his first victory of the year with a 5.63/231.24 over Kenny Bernstein. To show it was no fluke, they then went to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where a 5.30/275.06 qualified #5. He beat White in the first round, and in round two, he reset the NHRA ET record to 5.27 while beating a tire-smoking Prudhomme. (The "Snake" had set Low ET at 5.19 in qualifying but failed to back it up for a record). Mark Oswald smoked the tires in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals, and Larson was in his second final of the new year. Unfortunately, he blew a head gasket in the final, and his 5.58/207.32 finished runner-up to Scott Kalitta's 5.57/264. He was in another final at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.33/276.07 qualified #2, and in round one, he advanced with a 5.40 when Tom Hoover fouled. His 5.33/273 put Bernstein on the trailer in round two, while a great 5.31/275.48 took out Chuck Etchells in the semifinals. Things were looking good for another victory when he faced Ed McCulloch in the final. Ed had been having a hard time getting his Larry Minor-owned Cutlass down the track. The "Ace's" last two runs were 6.47 and 9.76 in the semis, so Larson was the favorite. Unfortunately, Bruce crossed the centerline on a 5.67 run in the final, and Ed's 19.70 got the victory. Still, three finals in three NHRA races was nothing to laugh at. They were tough. The fourth NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Larson qualified #1 with a 5.38/266.82. He beat Oswald in round one, but lost to Mike Dunn in the second round. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, they qualified well with a 5.35/268.69 for the #3 spot, but in round one, Larson smoked the tires and lost to Tony McCallum. The team continued their short dry spell at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bruce qualified #5 with a 5.55/268.73, but he only made it as far as round two, where his 5.50 lost to Prudhomme's 5.44. They rebounded from their slump at the NHRA Springnationals. There, Larson qualified #2 with a 5.30/271.32. He reset the NHRA ET record in the first round, with a 5.25 at 271.32 to beat Art Hendey. In round two, he set the track speed record with a 5.35/276.75 over a tire-smoking Johnny West, and in the semifinal, Etchells also smoked the tires against him, and his 5.33/270.27 moved him into the final against Hoover. In the final, Tom had problems and slowed to 6.79/135 while Bruce motored to his second win of the season with a 5.52/275.31. It was a dominant performance. The NHRA teams then headed to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Larson again qualified well, running 5.52/269.38 for the #3 spot. In the first round, he picked up to a 5.49/265.72 to beat White, but the Cutlass broke in round two against Prudhomme, giving the "Snake" a solo into the semifinals. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 5.39 qualified #6 for the show. He beat R.C. Sherman in round one, but his quicker 5.50 in round two lost to a quick-leaving McCulloch at 5.56. Maynard tuned the car to a 5.55/251.53 in Denver's thin air for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Bruce beat Kalitta in the first round, and White in the second with a 5.65/248. His 5.54/249 in the semifinals beat McCulloch and Bruce found himself in his fifth final round of the year. He made the best of it, running a 5.66/255.97 to beat Oswald's quicker 5.62/255. At the end of July, the NHRA tour was at Sonoma for the California Nationals. Larson qualified #6 at 5.42/276.07. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. Another win came at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.31/277.00. On his way to the final, he ran 5.31/271.98, 5.35/270.10, and 5.37/271.57 to beat Kalitta, Densham, and White in that order. In the final, he faced Bernstein, and once again, Larson used his reflexes to get the victory; his 5.40/271.08 beat Kenny's 5.37/273. 1989 World Champ. Photo from Columbus 1989. Great 5.247/274.72 at 1989 Chiefs was the quickest side-by-side pass (Mark Oswald, 5.232/281.60). Ran 5.282/276.92 at Indy 1989.

Notes: Don started the year at the AHRA Winternationals where he debuted his new Horizon. He was also debuted his new sponsor, Pepsi, which replaced the Army that had backed him since '74. It was an eight-car show and Prudhomme qualified #4 on the tricky track surface with a 6.89/213. He faced Tom Hovland in the first round, and they both smoked their tires, but the "Snake" got the win with a 7.32 over Hovland's 8.54. In the semifinals, Prudhomme again lit up the tires and lost to the eventual winner of the event, Kenny Bernstein. Don qualified #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.06/239.99, but lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" who ran 5.93/245 in the semifinals when he had tire shake and had to shut down. After the first two races of the year, Don had the engine moved back about two inches in the chassis to combat his early season traction problems. He went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and in qualifying #1 set NHRA records of 5.926/247.25. Don dumped Billy Meyer in the first round, with a 5.97/245.23, but in round two against Bernstein, he got crossed up and crossed the centerline. He then went to State Capitol for a best of three match race against Tom Hoover on March 22. He won the match hitting a best of 6.25/211.76 while Tom's best was 6.45/201. On April 26 he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car show. Don qualified #5 with a 6.11. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Beadle and won with another 6.11 when Beadle lost a motor. Unfortunately, the "Snake" broke in the semifinals advancing Bernstein into the final. Early in May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 and made it into the semifinals before losing to Hoover. A week later (May 9), Prudhomme won the NHRA Western Regional at OCIR. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.02/241.93 in the eight-car show. In round one, a 6.19/238.09 beat a tire-smoking Bob Pickett and in the semifinals, he beat Jim Dunn's 6.32/214 with a 6.17/238.72. In the final he ran Craig Epperly in Don Tate's "Superstar." Craig overpowered the track and smoked the tires and Don got the victory with a 6.56/227.84. Back on the AHRA trail, he was at St. Louis for the Gateway Nationals on June 7. He qualified #2 with a 6.37/231, second to Hoover. A first-round 6.34/233 beat Glenn Mikre's 6.76/231 in Bill Schifsky's Citation. In the semifinals, a 6.26/238.10 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat John Collins' 6.36. In the final, he lost to Hovland's Corvette. At the NHRA Springnationals, Don qualified #2 with a 6.09/239.99 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, he lost to Collins in the first round, with an off-pace 6.56/175.78. At the end of June, he won the AHRA Nationals at San Antonio, Texas. A 5.97/242.58 qualified #3 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Prudhomme stopped Epperly in round one, with a 6.07/242.58. Dale Pulde shut off in round two and Don's 6.11/225.56 advanced. In the semifinals, his 6.19/230.76 beat Bernstein's 6.24/233. In the final he met a strong running Dale Armstrong. Dale lost a motor and the "Snake" won with a 6.07/241.28. Prudhomme made it two in a row on the NHRA trail when he also won the Grandnationals in Canada on August 9. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with a 6.15/238.09. This meant that he had to face low qualifier Meyer in the first round. Don was up to the task as he thumped a tire-smoking Meyer with a 6.24/236.22. In the semifinals, Armstrong also smoked the tires against him and his 6.33/227.27 advanced into the final. There, both he and Bernstein had traction problems, but Don recovered first and his 7.18 took the victory. He didn't do so well at the AHRA Western Nationals although he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.12. In the first round, he ran a sub-par 6.43/214.71 that lost to Jim Dunn's 6.25/224. A week later (August 23), AHRA held its World Finals at Spokane and Prudhomme won. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.97 that beat Gary Densham. In the semifinals, he blew an engine on a 6.51/215.82 solo when opponent Mardy Maltais was unable to show. With a new engine installed for the finals, Don once again dipped into the fives with a 5.98/239.36 that beat Gordie Bonin's 6.09/236 for the title. He had more engine trouble at the US Nationals. A 5.91/247.93 qualified #2, behind Beadle. He made it into the second round before he lost his engine and the race to Fuzz Miller. Surprisingly, Prudhomme failed to qualify for the sixteen-car show at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. His best of 6.17/234.37 was good for the third alternate. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #2 with a 6.00/238.72 at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals.

Notes: Pedregon started the season by qualifying low at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a track record 5.01 at 297.02 (Low ET and Top Speed). In round one, his 5.28/264.23 beat Tom Hoover. Unfortunately, in round two, his 5.25/283.01 lost to Dean Skuza's fireballing 5.22/285. He "only" qualified #12 at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.35/273.30. The car "woke up" in eliminations by running 5.20/279.06 over Jim Epler's 5.61/190 in the opening round. He then shaved off another tenth in round two, where his 5.10/287.72 stopped Hoover. Cruz had a close race with Chuck Etchells in the semi-final that saw Pedregon's 5.18/278.63 get the better of Etchells' 5.20/247. He faced John Force in the final, which was another good race, but Force's 5.18/288 won over Cruz's 5.19/253.68.

Notes: Don started the '80 season by winning the OCIR Super Bowl race. He beat Kenny Bernstein in the final. At the AHRA Winternationals, he again reached the final, but this time, he finished runner-up as Tom Hoover beat him. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.10/240.64 qualified #5. Prudhomme suffered a rare first-round loss to Gordie Bonin. On March 9, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Prudhomme set Low ET in qualifying #1, and he ran another 6.04 at 233.16 in the semifinals while beating Dale Pulde. In the final, he faced Jim Dunn, and the "Snake" boiled the hides while Jim took the victory with a 6.35/231. Everything went Don's way at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #1 at 5.98/238, then ran 6.12/235.60 over Roy Harris, a 5.94/234.98 over Al Segrini, and a semifinal 5.93/239.36 single when Pulde developed an oil leak and shut off on the line. Don's 5.93 set a new NHRA record. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." It was the "Snake's day as his 5.98/238.09 beat Beadle's 6.17/231. His new Horizon debuted soon after this in April at OCIR.

Notes: The unique spoiler was later outlawed. Meyer ran this body in the last half of '87. Qualified #9 at 5.521 and ran 262.54 in a first-round loss at the same race. The car began the year blue & white. | At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Meyer ran 5.60/251.81 to qualify #6. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round and shut off to an 8.62/90.18 loss to John Martin. He had a rough outing at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He had a supercharger explode in qualifying, and he wrecked the Firenza body. His 5.73/255.73 qualified #10. Billy put on his backup body, a Tempo, for eliminations. In the first round, he lost another blower and the race to Ed McCulloch. On April 5, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was an eight-car field, and Meyer's 5.64/256.48 qualified on the "bump." McCulloch broke against him in the first round, and Billy advanced with a 5.60/260.56. A 5.61 at only 188.20 in the semifinals lost to Tom McEwen's 5.45/262 in the "Blue Max."Meyer had more bad luck at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified well with his 5.76/255.75 getting him the #6 spot, and his 5.71/254.59 easily beat Raymond Beadle's 6.21/215 in the "Blue Max" in round one. But in the second round, he blew another supercharger, and the force of the explosion blew the body off the car. He lost to John Force. Baton Rouge was more or less a normal event for Meyer. He qualified #10 at 5.98/236.03. Qualifying wasn't much of an issue as only sixteen cars showed. But he was late against Force in the opening round, and his 5.67/241.93 lost to Force's 5.74/252. He won his 11th NHRA career victory and his first since the '84 Grandnationals when he won the Springnationals at Columbus in June. He qualified #7 with a 5.79/241.28. He had a bit of luck on his side when in the first round, he had a rod break on his 6.94/66.38. But his opponent, Rod Dudley, crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the second round, his 5.86/250.27 defeated McCulloch's late5.81/253. Don Prudhomme smoked the tires against him in the semifinal and shut down to 7.05/152 while Meyer advanced with a 5.81/249.58. He ran Jim Head in the final, and this was Meyer's race as he could do no wrong; his 5.84/251.95 got the victory over Head's troubled 7.07/132. RH

Notes: 1971 Woody car replaced the heavy '70 Cuda. Qualified second at Indy 9/71 with a 6.59 and won the race, defeating Dale Pulde with an ET of 6.64 at 223.32 mph. The win at the 1971 NHRA Nationals was the first for Ed McCulloch and was a springboard for his dominating 1972 season. The photo was taken late in 1971 at Ontario during the NHRA Supernationals and shows the car shortly after signing Revell as a sponsor.

Notes: Crowerglide. In 1971, Snow fielded one of the first multicar teams in the sport, running a pair of mini-Chargers with longtime crew chief Jake Johnston as the other driver. Highlights of the season included the Super Stock Magazine Championships in York, Pa., a runner-up finish at the Summernationals, a win at the OCIR All Pro Series, and a Drag News Driver of the Year award. Ran 6.71 at Lions Drag Strip 10/71. Ran 6.71 Low ET at AHRA St. Louis. | Snow debuted his new Charger at a four-car race at Southland in March. The car was still in primer, and on Gene's first-ever pass in the car, his 8.19/128.20 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 7.35/187. In the second round, he singled, running a track record 7.03 at 194.38. A follow-up run of 6.94 showed that the new car was tough. The car's national event debut came at the NHRA Gatornationals, where Snow qualified #3 with a 6.85/204. He beat Tom Prock's 7.02 in the opening round with a 6.89, but in round two, he smoked the tires to an 8.13 loss to Phil Castronovo's 6.93. He dominated the final OCIR All-Pro race run the following week (March 27). There he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.82/217.39. He then went on to win by running 7.02/201.79 over Dean LaPole, and an easy 6.9/210 advanced in round two when Dave Condit lost fire in the "L. A. Hooker." He eased past the semifinals to meet with Jim Dunn in the final. Dunn broke, and Snow ran 7.89/120.34 for the victory. The next day he jumped on a plane and went to Amarillo to drive his old Challenger, and he won there too. In April, he was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He reached the final against Mart Higginbotham only to have his Charger break. He then won the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Dallas. A final round 7.36 stopped Charlie Smith. Then came his big win at the Super Stock Nationals at York US 30. Gene qualified #1 with a 6.93 but ran nothing but 6.8's in eliminations. He started with a 6.88/199.11 over Lew Arrington. Low ET came in round two, where his 6.85/209.79 stopped McCulloch's 6.97/214. Another 6.85 at 214.79 in the semifinals beat Leonard Hughes' 6.97/201. In the final, he faced newcomer Tim Kushi, and Snow stormed (pun intended) to a 6.88/219.51 (Top Speed) to beat Tim's 7.37/199. After that, he won an eight-car show at Epping, stopping Terry Hedrick in the final. He also won the AHRA Grand American held at Green Valley Raceway on May 23. He ran times of 6.93 (Low ET) at 201.34, 6.97/192.70 over Dick Harrell, and 6.98/203.60 over Higginbotham to reach the final. For the money, he raced Cecil Lankford in the "Brand X" Mustang. Snow's 6.99/169.81 got him the victory. June started with Snow bagging another win, this time at the Baton Rouge AHRA Grand American race. He set Low ET in the final with a 6.79 over a fouling Hughes. The next week (June 13), he was at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.89/215.31 qualified #3, and he beat Dunn in the first round, but he fouled against Sush Matsubara in round two. His next win came at the AHRA Springnationals held at Denver on June 27. There he beat John Dekker in the final. Englishtown was his next stop for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.92. A first-round 7.05/196 beat Kelly Brown who lost an engine in Barry Setzer's Vega. He got to solo in the next two rounds when Casey Powell was unable to run, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals faced Hughes in the final, and Snow was just a bit late off the line, and his 6.95/207.37 lost to Hughes' 6.96/211. He won over an eight-car field at Union Grove two days later, setting Low ET at 6.71. Another runner-up finish came at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, where despite setting track records of 6.73/220.58 in the final, he lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.77/217. He lost to Tom Hoover in the semifinals at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals.
