Notes: The car that broke the Corvette curse. Also 6.14/233.76 at 77 US Nats. Won IHRA Winternationals 1977. Ran 6.11 at Milan, 6.37 at Gainesville, 6.18 at Columbus, 6.14 at Englishtown, and 6.14 at Indy. | Tom debuted his Corvette at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The car failed to qualify, but it was awarded "Best Appearing Professional Car." At the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #6, but broke on the line in round two, advancing Roger Lindamood. Things went a little better for the "Goose" the following week (March 20) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show and the field was "weak,", but Tom's Corvette ran well. He qualified #2 with a 6.79/216 behind Shirl Greer, but he soloed with a 9.47 when Wilfred Boutilier was shut off on the line with an oil leak. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.62/216.86 that beat Pete Miner's 7.48 in his Duster. In the final, he ran Greer. Shirl had problems and slowed while McEwen ran a 6.65/216.86 for the victory. A week later (March 27), he was in another final. This time it was at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. He lost in the final, but it wasn't too bad as how many cars were outrunning Don Prudhomme at the time? His 6.33/229.59 lost to the "Snake's" 6.20/240. On May 1, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lost to Dick Bourgeois driving the Creasy Brothers car in the first round. He was runner-up to Dale Pulde at the IHRA Dixie Nationals on May 21. On the Memorial Day weekend of May 29 and 30, Tom was at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. All cars ran the first-round with the four lowest ETs advancing into the semifinals. McEwen's 6.28 made the semis where he beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" with a 6.16/227.27. In the final, he faced Tommy Ivo and McEwen got the victory with a 6.26/190.67. The next day, they did it again and once again Tom qualified for the semifinals, this time with a 6.36. He met Prudhomme in his semifinal race and lost to Don's 6.15/205. The following weekend (June 5), he was at Amarillo for the IHRA World Nationals. He beat Shirl Greer before losing to Ray Sherman in the semifinals. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.18 qualified #5. Tom failed to reach the finals. He won the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove of July 4. He qualified #1 with a 6.15 (Low ET), and advanced past the first-round with a 6.55/171.75 when Ken Safford fouled in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the semifinals, he beat Tom Prock's 6.52/206 with a 6.34/214.28. In the all Corvette final, Tom ran Jerry Boldenow's "Moby Dick." McEwen's 6.28/218.97 came out on top over Jerry's 6.47/225. That was Tom's first win ever in IHRA competition. He ran really well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, qualifying #2 to Prudhomme with a 6.14/233.16. His only other pass in qualifying was a 6.23. He beat Bob Pickett in the first round, with a tire smoking 7.13, but he lost to Sherman in round two when he smoked the tires again to a 7.45. McEwen ran at York US 30 on July 16 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, but he failed to reach the finals. He qualified #1 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.13. In the first round, a 6.24 beat Boldenow's 6.38. In the semifinals, Tom stepped up to a strong 6.11 and still lost to Gary Burgin's 6.13. On July 31, he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. A 6.31/224 qualified #2 behind Tom Hoover. In the first round his 6.31/214.79 beat Gene Snow's 6.68/185. Unfortunately, McEwen broke and was unable to run in the semifinals, so Snow got reinstated. He competed at Atco for its Fuel Funny Car Championships. All cars made two runs with the two lowest ETs coming back for the final. Tom lost his first race to Les Cassidy's 6.63 with an off pace 8.93. He won his second race with a 6.68/174 over Arnie Swensen's 6.78/193. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. On August 21, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #2 with a 6.29, but in round one, his fuel pump broke and opponent Bill Leavitt advanced. At the US Nationals at Indy, McEwen qualified #6 with a 6.14/230.17. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.45/200 in the "Blue Max" in the first round, with a 6.20/228. In the second round, his 6.24/233.76 lost to Burgin's 6.08/236. He went to Atco for the IHRA Fallnationals on September 18. A 6.48 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he slipped to a 6.60 that lost to Tom Prock's 6.44. He did not go to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals.

Notes: Was also sponsored by High Performance World | If memory serves me correctly, this was Joe Pisano's '83 Camaro, formerly driven by Tripp Shumake, purchased by Cowin, then lengthened (with Pontiac nose & tail) while in the US in 1985. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Made a splash on the second half of the NHRA national event trail in 1985: Indy - #11 qualifier at 5.770/257.43. Lost a close one on a holeshot to John Force in round one, 5.835/253 to 5.813/253.80 (MOV - .015 seconds, about 5.5 feet). Maple Grove - #10 qualifier at 5.781/255.24. Shut off to a 14-second run against Dale Pulde in round one. Seattle - #10 qualifier at 5.924/247.25. Shut off to a 15-second run against Force in round one. Pomona World Finals - #7 qualifier at 5.776/257.87. Put a big holeshot on Al Segrini in round one, but Al came around him for the win, 5.760/248.48 to 5.829/243.50 (MOV .042 - about 16 feet). We need to confirm where 5.67/266 numbers came from. I remember them, but it was not on the 1985 NHRA national event trail. The 266.27 was reported in an Aussie drag mag in December 1985. Probably an IHRA national event.

At the NHRA Gatornationals, he barely made the show, qualifying #16 with a 5.92/249.58. A consistent 5.94/246.17 in the first round, beat Segrini, but once again he lost in round two. This time John Lombardo stopped him in the "Blue Max."

Notes: Al qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.30/280.28. In the first round, he beat Gary Bolger with a 5.28/273.97. In round two, he ran a 5.30/277.52 but lost to Jim Epler's 5.27/272. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Hofmann continued to qualify well, running a 5.38/265.56 for the #7 spot. However, he lost in the first round, to Gary Densham. The next race on the NHRA schedule was at Houston for the Supernationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.29/271.90. He made it into the semifinals by beating Bolger in the first round, with a 5.30/272.14, and in round two, a 5.28/273.30 beat Del Worsham. In the semis, a 5.23/273.30 finished second best to Cruz Pedregon's track record 5.10/272. A 5.25/277.17 qualified #2 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 10.31/74.14 loss to Bolger's 5.23/275. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. Al qualified for the eight-car show with a 5.31/277.09. In round one, he beat Whit Bazemore's 5.45/270 with a 5.34/271.65. In the semifinals, both he and Mark Oswald ran 5.40 (Al at 272), but Mark got the win. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he qualified #9 with a 5.38/276.66. He really stepped it up for the first-round, running a 5.22/281.25, but that wasn't good enough to advance, as John Force ran a 5.19/269 to get the win. Al was smiling after the next NHRA race, as he won the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.30/280.37 and improved to a 5.25/273.14 in winning his first-round race over Jerry Caminito's 5.67/231. In the second round, another 5.30 at 273.97 beat Chuck Etchells, and in the semifinals, a 5.38/274.22 beat a motor blowing Force at 5.41/269. He met Bazemore in the final, and Whit smoked the tires while Hofmann recorded a 5.40/279.67 victory. He repeated at the very next race, winning the NHRA Springnationals to make it two in a row. There he ran 5.29/275.65 to qualify #4. A first-round 5.35/273.14 beat Norm Wilding, and in round two, a 5.31/274.47 advanced when Gordon Mineo fouled. Al was sharp on the tree in the semifinals when his 5.28/273.22 took out Etchells' quicker 5.26/278. A final round 5.31 at only 263.31 got the win when Pedregon fouled. He almost made it three in a row when he made it into the finals at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Al qualified on the pole with a 5.34 (Low ET) at 274.22. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.45/270.67 when Troy Ray broke. In round two, a 5.43/266.50 stopped Worsham's 5.58/272, and in the semifinals, a 5.41/263.85 beat Mark Oswald's off pace 5.84/196. In the final, he ran Force, and John's 5.34/278 got the victory over Al's 5.42/264.70. His luck ran out at the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. He didn't run badly there; he just didn't make it into another final. A 5.24/264.08 qualified #3, and he ran a strong 5.21/277.86 in the first round, to beat R.C. Sherman, but in round two, he smoked the tires and lost to Worsham's 5.32/277.

Notes: One of the biggest surprises at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona in '86 was Oswald's not qualifying for the show. His best attempt yielded only a 9.56/87.89. That was nowhere near the 6.09 "bump spot." The team then went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. Mark was still not running up to par, qualifying #7 with a 6.61/237.46. A first-round 6.38/247.93 (Top Speed) beat Billy Meyer, who shut off, but in the semifinals, he shut off and lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86 (Low ET) at 236. In Gainesville, things went much better for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Mark ran a 5.70/263.00 (Top Speed) to qualify #2. In the first round, an even better 5.65/259.36 beat a tire-smoking John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." In the second round, it was Oswald who smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.96/49.71 that lost to Ed McCulloch. Due to a rain delay, the Gatornats were run the same weekend as the IHRA Winternationals, so obviously, they didn't run the Darlington race. But they did make IHRA's second event, the Bayou Nationals at Louisiana Raceway Park. Oswald qualified #1 and beat McCulloch in the final for the victory. He lost to Jim Head in the first round, at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta after qualifying #2 with a 5.72/258.91 behind Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/260. On May 4, the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Oswald qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.70, but he was upset in the opening round by Steve Hodkinson. Mark's off-pace 6.05/205.94 fell to Steve's low buck car that won with a 5.88/246. Early in June, Oswald went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 5.76/263.11 (Top Speed) qualified #4. He improved to 5.74/260.11 to defeat Force's 5.78/253 in round one, but he lost in the battle of the "beer cars" in the semifinal, where his 5.78/257.14 fell to Bernstein's 5.71/252. Mark qualified #5 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.75/249.86. In their first-round race, Hodkinson crossed the center line against him, and Oswald advanced with a 5.92/246.77. John Force also crossed the centerline against him in the second round, and once again, Mark advanced, this time at 5.84/252.59. This did not happen again in the semifinal, as eventual winner Tom McEwen laid a straight as an arrow 5.85/236 on him to beat the Firebird's 5.94/251.81. Another win finally came at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Mark set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.65/259.66 (speed was a new track record). He continued to run strong through eliminations, and in the semifinal, his 5.76/255.17 beat Force's 5.84/253. The only problem was, Bernstein won his semifinal race with a 5.72/255, giving him lane choice in the final. Crew Chief Leonard Hughes had to be given a lot of credit in this win as he didn't dial in too much power and smoke the tires. Oswald won the final with a 5.76/255.76 over Kenny's 5.80/250. The following week (June 22), he also won the IHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.84/247.25. Larry Gould's 6.67/212 fell to his 5.89/252.80 in the opening round, and Mark reset both ends of the track record in the semifinal with a 5.77/254.95 that beat Paul Smith's 6.12/222 in the "Custom Body" car. He faced McEwen in the final, and there was no stopping the "Candies and Hughes" car on this day as Mark's 5.80/254.95 easily took the win over Tom's off-pace 6.19/176. At the end of June, the team was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.69/260.25 got the pole, but Mark and Brad Tuttle fried the tires in the opening round. Brad's 6.59/251 came out on top over Oswald's 6.61/251. It was probably the best race to watch of round one. The two "beer cars then met again in the final at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. They qualified one and two, with Bernstein's 5.81/256 getting the pole over Oswald's 5.87/245.90. Mark ran an easy 6.03/239.36 to advance in round one, when Doc Halladay broke. In the semifinal, he stepped it up to a 5.91/249 to beat a crossed-up Ed McCulloch. Bernstein had the edge in performance at this event, and it stayed true in the final where his 5.87/253 got the victory over Mark's 5.99/238.09 runner-up effort. Photo from Indy 1986. Mark also ran 265 at IHRA Bristol and won the 1986 IHRA championship. He also ran 5.619 at the 1986 Chiefs at Ennis. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Cool rear spoiler. Oswald, smoking the tires, also beat Bernstein wire-to-wire in the final of the '86 Mile-Highs, a hell of a race on YouTube. Bernstein didn't smoke 'em, and Oswald still beat him. - Joe Moore

Notes: Skuza's first NHRA event of the season was at the Gatornationals. He had lots of problems there, and his 11.20-74.44 best failed to qualify. He did better at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where although he still failed to qualify, he improved to 6.39/155.89. Dean was the first alternate at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 6.06 best. Things really clicked at Englishtown in May for the Mopar Parts Nationals. His 5.26/274.80 qualified #9. Unfortunately, he lost to Gary Cellone in the opening round. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.44/254.02. The next stop was at Topeka at the end of June for the NHRA Western Nationals. Skuza qualified #9 with a 5.41/271.98. But once again, he fell in the first round, this time to Kenji Okazaki. He bypassed the following few events before returning to the schedule at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Only 15 cars showed, so qualifying wasn't an issue. Dean's 7.61/112.55 qualified #14. This time he lost to Chuck Etchell's in round one. Then came Indy, Dean's 5.34/284.09 just made the field qualifying on the "bump." In the first round, his 5.39/269.46 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.15/285. He stepped it up at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where his 5.25/277.17 qualified #7. Despite the good qualifying effort, he still lost in the first round to Okazaki. He ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.08/291.07 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Heartland Nationals. He also got his first-round win of the year when his 5.25/274.47 beat Tom Hoover's 5.35/271. In round two, his 5.26/274.89 lost to Freddie Neely's 5.16/288. He also ran well at the NHRA Chief Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.19/284.45. A slightly better 5.17/290.13 fell o Del Worsham's 5.17/292 in the first round. Dean ran his best ET of 5.087/291.07 at the NHRA Sears/Craftsman Nats, Topeka 1993. He ran 5.088/294.69 for his best speed at the 1993 World Finals. Notes: In Jan '84, Gary was at Firebird's Drag Racing Superbowl. He ran 5.99/252.10 to become the first driver over 250 at Firebird. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 at a stout 5.925/254.95, but a first-round 6.57 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.21 in the "Blue Max," but both cars were disqualified. Southern crossed the centerline, and Beadle hit the wall! Mark Oswald had the resultant bye run in round two. The team attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 6.255/234.37 best was good for the fifth alternate. The team's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There were only seventeen cars on hand for the sixteen-car field, so Gary didn't have to push too hard in qualifying, running 6.33 for the "bump" spot. He lost to Beadle in the opening round of eliminations. At NHRA Atlanta, he also ran 6.338/229.59, but that was only good for the #e alternate slot. At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, now run in May, he failed to qualify in the eight-car field with a 6.07 best. The bump was a 6.03. After qualifying ended, Gary made another pass and ran 5.86/251. Southern was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May. He qualified on the bump spot at 6.138/241.28, but eventual winner Billy Meyer's 5.88/248 beat Gary's 6.200/248.61 in the first round. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals and qualified #3 with a career-best(to this point),5.81 at 248. He broke against Al Segrini in the first round. He also lost early at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #10 with a 6.34 before losing to Dale Pulde in the opening round. Surprisingly, the team failed to qualify for the eight-car field at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 5.996/250.00 qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Tim Grose fouled against him in the first round, and Gary advanced with a 6.123/243.90. In round two, his 6.075/247.93 lost to eventual winner Mark Oswald's 5.85/243 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. The NHRA Summenationals at Englishtown were a disappointment as Gary failed to qualify, ending up as the first alternate with a 6.052/253.52. Gary also finished one slot outside the field in Brainerd with a 6.075/249.30 effort. The team had a rough outing at Indy, finishing as the last non-qualifier with a 6.312/246.57. The car always had the power. Where did the 5.73/259 numbers occur? We remember them but not the track or year. We need confirmation. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984. | At the beginning of '84, Jeb Allen helped with the clutch, and his name was on the back quarter panel for a short time. I saw the 604 number at the Winternationals and thought it was Kenney Goodell. The announcer said Dunlap had 500 gallons of nitro and several motors. Gary Southern's last go in this car was at the Oct. 5th FC show at Carlsbad; saw it myself. ND-covered meet. In eliminations GS ran an rnon-and-off 6.64/233. Notes: After Johnny Loper's Arrow body burnt up at the IHRA Springnationals, Loper replaced it with this Mustang. It was run at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals where Tripp placed it on the "bump" for the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.29/233.16 qualified #14 and an improved 6.23 in the first round, beat Bernstein's 6.28. Shumake got an easy single in round two when Tom McEwen was unable to run, but, in the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max.”He won the Byron Funny Car race in July. In the first round, he even beat Don Prudhomme with a 6.45/230.76. He faced Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" in the final and Colson crossed the centerline giving Tripp the victory. The next stop was at Dragway 42, West Salem, Ohio for the AHRA Grandnationals. Tripp made it into the semifinals before losing to eventual winner Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle.” Surprisingly, he failed to qualify for the PHR Championships. Yet the next week he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.11/240.64. In the first round, he slowed to 6.29 in a loss to Gary Burgin's 6.20. Then came Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals. A 6.07/244.56 qualified well enough, but in the first round, he went into hard tire shake and shut off against Kosty Ivanof. Seattle was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Fallnationals. Tripp qualified #13 with a 6.29/236.84. Pat Foster fouled against him in the opening round and Shumake's 6.26/207.85 advanced. In round two he ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.23/225.56, but it wasn't enough to beat Colson's 6.02/238. The team ended the season on a high note at the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway. Tripp qualified #8 with a 6.37/230.17. The track was bad as everyone seemed to be smoking their tires. In round one, Pulde boiled the hides and Tripp's 6.54/229.59 advanced. In round two, both he and Beadle smoked heavily with Shumake's 6.60/227.27 coming out on top over Beadle's 6.74/225. The semifinals saw more of the same, it was smoke city, but Tripp recovered first in his race against John Force. His 6.88/231.86 got him the win. In the final, he faced Gordie Bonin. Tripp slipped and slid to 6.91/213.27 in a runner-up finish to Bonin's 6.53/234. All in all, it was a good season for the team as they finished seventh in NHRA points.

Notes: Tommy Grove was really getting his act together in '67. Near the end of the season, a supercharger was added to his SOHC motor and the car began to lay down some numbers. On October 22, he was at Fremont for the exhibition Car Championships. He made it into the semifinals before losing to Terry Hedrick. Just a week later, he was at Irwindale for the experimental Stock Invitational. He upset "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the opening round of eliminations, but he lost in round two. Grove was at Lions on November 4 for the East-West Championships. He got some payback on Hedrick in round two where he beat him with a 7.98. He faced Nicholson in the final and despite running a strong 8.10/167.59 he finished runner-up to "Dyno's" 7.97/174. At OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet, Grove went up against Hedrick in his first race and Grove was late off the line. Terry's 8.23/180 held off the Mustang's quicker 8.11/185.90. Notes: Gene Snow was one of the top '60s funny car stars in his "Rambunctious" Dodges. Snow went through the ranks of Super Stocks, F/Xs, and flip-top funny cars. Even though Gene won the US Nationals twice in a row in '66 and '67 with his Dodge, it was his '69 Mini-Charger was considered one of the top ten funnies of the '60s. The second Charger, the mini-version, replaced the full sized one he debuted at the end of '68. Snow had been working on the direct drive Crowerglide setup and perfected it with the '69 Charger. Snow has never been known to shy away from a new idea. The Mini-Charger ran a best ET of 7.13 at 213.27 mph. With the Crowerglide direct drive unit, the car would leave the line behind the automatic transmission funny cars of the day and charge by them on the big end. The car was one of the first funny cars to top the 200 mph barrier and Snow did it on a regular basis. The chassis for Snow's killer top end direct drive Mini-Charger was built by R&B race Cars of Kenosha, Wisconsin (John Buttera and Dennis Rollain). NOTE: This photo is actually the '68 Logghe car with a new Fiberglass Ltd., molded in red metal flake, '69 Mini-Charger body that Gene ran throughout 1969. This is the car that ran 7.13 at Rockingham, NC. The R&B car was driven by Jake Johnston (see the photo in item 4013). Ran 213.78 at Rockingham NC on 9/69. | A 7.65/199.54 qualified third at the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol on June 8. He beat Malcolm Durham with an even better 7.55/202.24 in the first round, but he burned two pistons doing it and was unable to return for the second round. He then went to Dallas on June 15 for the NHRA Springnationals where he made a 7.70/200 qualifying pass and was then told by NHRA officials that the car was disqualified for being too narrow. He ran a best of three match race against Jim Maybeck's Corvair at LaPlace on June 22. He won all three races with runs of 7.79/193.12, and 8.69/196.96 when Maybeck broke. He soloed in the final race, running 7.57 at a track speed record of 204.08. Snow won an eight-car show in Dallas on September 20. He beat Mart Higginbotham in the first round, with a 7.55/163. In the semifinal, a 7.29/204.54 beat Kelly Chadwick's 7.48/194. In the final, he set both ends of the track record with a 7.24/206.88 over Cogo Eads. The following week (September 28) came the AHRA US Open at Rockingham. He won the event over Higginbotham with a 7.13 track record.

Notes: 1968 Charger designed by Gary Dyer with a dragster-type roll cage, built by Race Car Specialties. Campaigned during '68 season and burned to the ground in late '68 at US 30 (Gary, Ind.) due to oil filter coming off the engine, catching fire, and injuring Gary Dyer. Ran 7.47/196 on that pass. Also ran 7.46/195.87 at NY National 68. | Norm Kraus and driver Gary Dyer were a tough act to beat in the early years of Funny Car racing. The '65, '66, and '67 seasons saw the team beat every superstar at one time or another. Then came '68. It was not a good year for the "Mr. Norm" team. It started well enough with Dyer driving the new Charger into the high sevens with ease. It looked like the start of another successful season. Then came the trouble. While racing in Texas, the motor blew and Gary got the car stopped and got out OK, but then for no known reason, the car caught fire. It burned to the ground as once the magnesium caught fire, there was no putting it out. All that was left was the bare chassis. So, while Dyer set about rebuilding the car, they hired a local driver to drive the '67 mount. That didn't go so well when the driver lost control of the car at Cordova and smacked it into a telephone pole. The driver was seriously injured and the car was totaled. After this, the team was out of racing for a short while as they had no car. Then came the oil filter incident at Gary US 30 mentioned above.

Notes: McCulloch started his season at OCIR's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. Unfortunately, the season started with a first-round loss to the race's eventual winner John Lombardo. Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #11 with a 6.371/227.84. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.33/185 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.30/236. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Ed's 6.64/221 qualified #15. In the first round, a shutoff 13.40-58.52 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.40/232. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.27/232.55 in the opening round defeated Gordie Bonin's 6.29/229. A second-round 6.09/231.95 beat Prudhomme's 6.07/234. His 6.26 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.22. Early in April, he was at Portland for its opener. It was an eight-car show, and McCulloch had tire shake in the first round, and shut off against Mike Miller. It was not his day as in his second race, his 6.89/205 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.63/174. The following day, he was at Seattle for its opener. Ed's 6.57/220 beat Nick Harmon in round one, but tire shake stopped him again in the semifinal. He was forced to shut down to a 10.60-72 loss against Tommy Ivo, who advanced to the final with a 6.61/224. His next stop was at OCIR for the big 64 car show. It was rain-delayed by one week, but Ed set Low ET in round two while beating Billy Meyer with a 6.26. He reached the final only to lose to Pat Foster. On May 6, Seattle hosted the NHRA Division Six opener. Ed's 6.25/231.95 in qualifying was second only to Bonin's 6.19/234. But Ed had problems in the opening round and shut down to a 10.26 that lost to Miller's 6.63. His next stop was at Portland for the Oregon Open. In the first round, McCulloch's 6.56/197 beat Miller's 6.97/141. But the Arrow continued to have problems getting down the track in the semifinal. Ed's tire-smoking 10.10 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16. He really improved his qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, a 6.18/214.79 qualified #4. But he was still having a tough time getting past the first-round at the major NHRA events. This time he shut down to an 8.98/96.77 loss to Bob Pickett, who advanced with a 6.27/220. Ran 6.09 at Bakersfield 3/78, defeated a quicker 6.07 by Don Prudhomme. Ed ran best NHRA times of 6.090/237.46 on race day at NHRA Englishtown 7/17/78. Formerly listed 6.03/238.09 for 1978. If Ed ran those numbers, where did it occur? | Mean car, with the Bowers Blower/Okie Bernd combo. Shown in a Summer '78 Midwest match race article in SS&Dl, titled "The Rites Of Spring." Notes: John ran 6.63/187.10 at the PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. He qualified #13 at 6.39/217.39 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and lost to John Collins in the first round. On April 9, John was at Irwindale testing his new Milodon engine he had just installed in his three-year-old car the morning of this race. He had no intention of running in competition, but the field was one car short. He ended up winning the race. He ran 6.28 and 6.23 on the way to the final. He ran Eddie Pauling, who had set Low ET with a 5.97 in Johnny Loper's Arrow. The two had a good race, but John's 6.09/216 got him the victory over Eddie's 6.25/208. John was low qualifier at the Cajun Nationals at 6.42/213.27. He fouled and lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. John qualified #6 at Columbus at 6.190/220.58 and won round one at 6.27 over Stan Bowman's 6.37. He lost to Meyer again in round two, 6.30 to 6.37. John won the NHRA Division 7 race on May 5 with a 6.12. (BP was in attendance at that race). Qualified #10 at Indy at 6.202/231.95 but lost to Gary Burgin in round one, 6.02 to 6.59. Qualified #8 at Seattle at 6.38/216.86 and improved to a 6.30/211 win over Gary Saindon in round one. But Gary Cochran beat John in round two. Qualified #10 at the World Finals at 6.22/228.42 but could not start in round one, and lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.06. John did win the OCIR Funny Car 500 in May (Bill was there). Notes: This is Don's first Buttera Cuda that made its debut in late 1970 replacing his Ron Scrima built car. This car was originally painted yellow using the same design that was on Don's first Hot Wheels car. Don was low qualifier at the 1970 NHRA Hot Wheels Supernationals with a 7.044/200.00, losing to Richard Tharp in the first round, (Don's Top Fuel car also qualified number 1 with Butch Maas at the wheel). At the 1970 OCIR Manufacturer's Championships Don ran consistent 6 second ETs (6.93/6.91/6.89) and had Top Speed of the meet (217.91 mph) while helping Plymouth win the overall team championship. Don also won the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on 12/12/70, running a track record 6.92 ET at 192.70. This car was painted white with red flames for the start of the 1971 season and ran successfully for almost two years.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | John Force started his '89 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #2 with a 5.37, but failed to reach the finals. John set Low ET while qualifying #1 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.32/277.26. He lost in round one, with a 5.46/275.22 that finished second best to Tom Hoover's 5.39/260. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, his 5.26/277.52 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's strong 5.19/265. Once again, he lost to Hoover in the first round. Gainesville was NHRA's next stop for the Gatornationals. Force qualified #4 with a 5.36/276.92. This time, Chuck Etchells stopped him in the first round. He finally got past round one at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he qualified #10 with a 5.57/255.75. He beat Art Hendey in the first round, and in round two a 5.48/273.14 beat Hoover. His semifinal 5.55/268.01 lost to upstart Eric Reed's 5.51/259. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, he broke in round two and lost to Mark Oswald. He ran well, qualifying #8 with a 5.42/274.72 and improved to a 5.41 first-round win over Paul Smith. Oswald got him again at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals, where Mark stopped John's tire smoking car in the first round. Force qualified #10 with a 5.57/267.61. By the seventh race of the NHRA season, the Springnationals, John was hoping his luck would turn around. It didn't. A 5.37/273.05 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to alternate Jim White. He was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on June 25. A 5.55/268.17 qualified #6 in the field. He beat Etchells in the first round, with a 6.06/177.97. But in round two, Oswald's 5.60/256 beat his 5.63/263.00. He qualified #7 with a 5.39/276.15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, but a 5.54 in round two lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.36. The next NHRA event was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. Crew chief Austin Coil tuned the car to a 5.70/250.00 in the thin air to qualify #7 in the show. John beat Richard Hartman in the first round, but in round two his 5.70 lost to Oswald's 5.64. On July 30, John was running at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.45/274.22 qualified #7 in the field and he improved to 5.42/273.72 to beat Jim Murphy in the first round. In round two, his 5.51/272.97 beat Tony McCallum's 5.57/258. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, he ran into a hard running Prudhomme who strapped a 5.35/268 on John's 5.50/271.65.

Notes: Beadle debuted his new Omni-bodied car on August 3 at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He had problems getting the car to hook up and he finally ran 6.56 to get the final qualifying spot in the eight-car show. He improved, only slightly, to a 6.50 in the first round, but it was enough to beat John Pott who smoked the tires to a 7.93. In the semifinals, he fell of to a 6.79 that lost to eventual winner Paul Smith's 6.42 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." It was not a great start with the new ride. On August 17, the "Blue Max" team was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. Raymond advanced past the first-round with a 6.26/228.42 when Joe Godwin's Lincoln broke. In the semifinals, he improved to a 6.20/235.60, but lost to Billy Meyer's 6.14/204. The car performed better at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals where he qualified #1 with a 5.963/240.00. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Roy Harris' 6.28/236. A week later they were at Jackson County Sports Park for another NHRA Divisional race. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.31/226.13 behind Ed McCulloch's 6.14/226. These two worked their way into the final. Beadle started by running 6.22/230.76 over Nick Harmon and in the semifinals, set Low ET with a 6.09 while beating Dale Armstrong. In the final, he got Top Speed to go along with his Low ET when he ran 6.15/236.22 for the victory over Ed's 6.24/229. Fremont held a four-car show on a Wednesday night in September. They all made two runs with the two Low ET cars running in the final. Beadle gained his spot in the final with runs of 6.03 and 5.99 (Low ET). He was to meet Tom Ridings in the final who had run 6.05 and 6.09. Beadle also set Top Speed at 243.90, but the last race was never run due to a curfew at the track. The "Max" was strong at Seattle on September 21 for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.13/241.93 qualified #4 and in the first round, he beat Hank Johnson with a 6.19. In the second round, his 6.28/231.95 advanced when Tom McEwen broke just off the line. He picked up to a 6.01/243.90 (Top Speed) in the semifinals over Meyer which won him his second NHRA Funny Car Championship. In the final, he beat Dale Armstrong with a 6.04/243.24.
