Notes: This is a car that I only saw at the Nationals in 1979. I am not sure what the team is, but it ran under the Pineville Flash name (on the front spoiler), and was called the Barbarian. I know that they really put on a pretty decent showing out there, but can't say how well they ran or qualified, if they even made the show. One of those many cars that would show up to take a shot at the Nationals, always among the hardest field of the year because of all the extra cars. - Tom West That this chassis was originally Don Schumacher's Wonder Wagon low rider! Would make him at least the fourth owner? (Schumacher, Hollensbe, Snavely, Baldwin). |

Notes: Bobby tried his hand at nitro funny car racing in 1997 and had a pretty rough go of it. He attempted to qualify at four NHRA national events and didn't make the field at any. He ran 7.314/121.26 at the Winters, 8.936/92.63 at Gainesville, No Times Recorded at St. Louis (which may have been a decent run - anybody got the info?) Bobby converted to a top fuel car for his final national event - the NHRA World Finals. |

Notes: Clark was at DeSoto on April 11 for the second NHRA Division Two race. Only five cars showed, so he ran an easy 8.74 to qualify #3. He picked it up by more than a second in the first round, but his 7.82/198.60 was still no match for Larry Fullerton's 6.55/220 in the "Trojan Horse." |

Notes: Jim Barillaro built the Torino personally in 1969 with help from Ford and John Healey of Tasca Ford. Limited finances kept the car from being a serious contender, but it was a consistent 7-second car in 1969 and 1970. Ran 7.99 in Connecticut. Jim debuted the car in Connecticut on September 7, but he parked it due to traction problems, and Kosty Ivanof filled in for him. |

Notes: Car debuted in 64 as a blown gas Fiat altered with chassis built by Barker himself. In 66, the Fiat shell was replaced with a Mustang shell and car began running as a flopper in local shows. Initially ran direct drive for Chrisman like launches. Blown 427 Wedge eventually ran mid 8's at 170 plus. Car won Comp Eliminator at 67 HRM Championships. Car was sold to Aussie racer in late 68, but he ran it with 392. |

The car was sold to an Aussie racer in late 68, who ran it with a 392. Barker was at Lions on May 18 for an Funny Car event. After qualifying finished for the low eight, there were so many cars there that another eight-car field was assembled for the next eight lowest ETs. Barker qualified #5 among the second eight with a 9.31. In the first round, he improved to 8.84/175.43 to beat Gene Conway's ailing 10.06/105. But in the semifinals, his 8.99/174.08 lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.44/178 in his new Corvette. On August 31, Larry was at OCIR for an Funny Car race where fourteen cars ran the first-round, and the four lowest ETs advanced into the semifinals. Barker ran 8.56/176.61 in his race, but he lost to Dave Beebe's 7.74/187. His time was not quick enough to advance into the semis. |

Notes: Car ran as an NHRA legal AA/FA. The car was the gorgeous Psycho '67 Mustang of Snodgrass and Mahnken. The car started out as an injected gas Fiat with the Ford Single Overhead Cam engine made just for racing. The Pat Mahnken driven machine did manage to win one four-car fuel altered event at Lions with a good 9.43/160.14 run. According to Don Montgomery's book, this win was due to the inconsistent nature of the other fuel altereds. Then in 1967, the team decided to capitalize on the growing funny car craze and got a new Mustang body to put on the car in place of the Fiat. The Tom Sherlock Ford sponsored beauty also got a new engine - a wedge head 427 Ford on fuel. Larry Barker now drove the all yellow car to nine-second runs until 1969. The car managed to win the 1967 Hot Rod Magazine Competition eliminator category in the AA/FA class, the car's career highlight. Pat Mahnken wascome one of the first professional bracket racers with an another Mustang funny car. According to nearby neighbor Bill Duke, he raced for a living after losing his regular job. |

Notes: Dale made the long trip to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he had problems and did not make a single complete pass during qualifying. He also was a DNQ at Gainesville (times unavailable but slower than 6.96). He was in Atlanta in March for an eight-car show. Traction was hit or miss, as it only took a 7.48 to qualify. With that being said, Dale's 7.62 failed to make the field. He was not alone as he had good company as Raymond Beadle and Kenny Bernstein also failed to beat the 7.48 "bump." Dale returned to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals in April, where he was the eighth alternate at 6.869/175.09. He was the 13th alternate at Englishtown (times unavailable) and Indy, with a respectable season-best of 6.160/233.16 with tuning help from Sid Waterman and Bill Flurer. That was Dale's last NHRA national event of the year. Photo from 1983 US Nationals. | Dale Barlet was an FTQ at the '83 Winters in an old Citation, fired up in the pits after the initial rain-out. There was a beer stand by the pit entrance. They went 6.17 at Indy once Bill Fleurer matched the uneven rod lengths. (ND) - Joe Moore |

Notes: Dale started his NHRA national event season at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was having all kinds of problems in qualifying and, at one point, field-stripped the car down to the bare chassis in the Gainesville Hilton Hotel parking lot. Even after all that, he could only run a 7.380 best (speed unknown), far from the 6.03 "bump." He went to Baton Rouge, where he was the third alternate for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 10.98 (speed unknown) shutoff pass. He was at Columbus on June 10 for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, his 6.194/207.37 (fourth alternate) failed to crack the 6.00 "bump." Shortly after that (June 24), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.12/231.95 qualified #6. He lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde in the first round. He qualified #14 at the NHRA Grandnationals at 6.400/180.36 but lost to Frank Hawley in round one when he fell off to a 7.799/111.38. The following week (July 8), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Dale's 6.11/225 qualified #11, and in the first round, he ran a career-best (to this point) 6.02 at 236. The problem was that Don Prudhomme was running 5.82/250 in the other lane. Dale qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a new personal best, a 5.980/233.76. In the first round, he lost to Tim Grose, 5.941/243.90 to 8.315/113.92. That was Dale's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Dale started his national event season at Gainesville, where his 6.350/214.08 was the fifth alternate. He was the third alternate at Atlanta at 6.692/193.71. Those were Dale's only two NHRA national events. He went to Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, and the car caught fire during a 6.22 run. His fire extinguishers failed, and the car burnt to the ground. |

Notes: Dale was one of twenty-four Funny Car drivers who arrived at Englishtown attempting to qualify for the NHRA Summernationals sixteen car field. Unfortunately, he was the slowest of the twenty-four, and his 7.882/170.13 was the eighth alternate. That was Dale's only NHRA national event this year. We formerly listed 5.823/248.61 times for Dale this year, but I think those were run at Sanair 1992 and Bristol 1984. We need to validate that and return those times to this year if they were run at an IHRA event or match race. |
