Notes: Head wrench, also the occasional driver. This photo is of the 1969 car, which Schartman drove. Behling drove the 1968 Cougar as a second car in 1969. | Memphis had four fuel Funny Car's running on April 13. Arnie was one of them, and in his first race against Al Vanderwoude, the Cougar got sideways, and he had to pull the 'chute to straighten it out. He still won with a 9.23/157. In his second race, he ran against Dick Harrell. No ETs were reported, but Dick won with a speed of 204.54 over Behling's 201.34. It was probably the first time two FCs ran over 200 mph on the same run. On May 25 at Suffolk, Bruce Larson faced off against Arnie in a best of three match race. Larson beat Behling two straight, and in the second race, the Cougar's motor let go, and it was done for the day. He raced at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals on June 8, but he broke in the first round. He got a win at US 30 on July 6 when he beat Bobby Wood in the final of an eight-car show. A first-round 7.81/191 beat Dick Harrell, and in the semis, he ran 7.79/198 to advance to the final. Both he and Wood ran 7.72, but Arnie's slower 198 got there first, beating a strong 204 mph blast by Wood’s Nova. Another win came on July 19 at the St. Louis 1/8 mile Funny Car Bonanza. Arnie ran a 5.32/142 in the first round, and in round two, a 5.10/144 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Mike Burkhart's 5.28. In the semifinals, a 5.14/141 got around Harrell's Camaro, and in the final, he beat Ronnie Runyan's 5.31 with a 5.20/140 for the title. US 131 held their Funny Car Championships on August 30, but a strong 7.64/198.66 by Roger Lindamood in the first round, best Behling's 7.86/184.42. The following day (May 31), he raced at Minneapolis for another eight-car show. He beat Della Woods in the first round, but broke a crank and could not run in the semifinal. He ran at Suffolk on September 7 when eight cars all ran three races. In his first race, a 7.90/178.21 beat Henry Garcia in the Car Shop Camaro. A 7.72/177.86 beat Bryan Teal's 7.78/195.64. He fouled against Al Hanna in his third race.

Notes: Arnie started driving John's Cuda in competition on June 13 at Lions for its All-American series race. Arnie qualified #1 with a 7.39 but came up against the always tough Gene Conway in the first round. Sure enough, Conway set Low ET at 7.26/202.70 while beating Behling's close 7.30/203.61 (Top Speed). Arnie got back into the show for the semifinals when Steve Bovan broke. He made good use of his second chance by running a 7.60/196.07 to beat Bob Smith's 7.95/163 in "Bad Bascomb's Ghost." That put him in the final, where once again, he faced Conway's Corvette. Arnie must have been a little nervous as he fouled away a 7.79/193.54, giving Gene the victory. At the OCIR March of Dimes race on June 20, he set Low ET at 7.25/199.50 in his first-round victory over Conway's 7.74/195. In the semifinal, a 7.67/199.55 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.72/194. But against Mike Snively in the final, he got a little anxious and fouled, running a 7.41/202.70. Snively ran a 7.26/203.61 for the win. On July 3 for the Nitro Championships at OCIR, he again set Low ET at 7.25, but this time, it came in the final while beating Ray Alley for the win. He ran an easy 7.64/190.67 in the first round, when Jack Chrisman's Mustang broke. A 7.46/180.36 beat Dave Beebe's 7.48/195 in round two, and in the semifinal, he set Top Speed with a 7.43/200.44 pass over Snively's 7.67/194. His final round numbers were 7.25/200.00 over Alley's 7.95/191. He went out and did it again the next day at Irwindale's Fourth of July race. He beat a troubled John Lombardo with a 7.81/190.26 in the first round. In the semifinal, he was to have met Ray Alley, but Alley broke, so Arnie soloed with a 7.59/186.32. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 7.53/191.88, beating Conway's off pace 8.36/111. On July 11, he ran at the AHRA All-American meet at Lions. Again he came away with Low ET and Top Speed when he won his first-round race over Vic Morse with a 7.31/198.67. He beat Ray Alley in the semifinal with a rear-end breaking 8.02/133.13 but could not fix the car in time for the final, so Alley returned to run with the break rule in effect. He qualified #1 on August 1 at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships and beat Barry Kelly's Corvair in the first round, with a 7.38 (Low ET) at 186.32, but in round two, he won the race when Frank Rupert crossed the centerline, but Behling's car caught fire and was unable to return for the semifinals. He was ok. On August 15, they were back at it at the OCIR Anniversary Race. Once again, Arnie had Low ET and Top Speed at 7.14/210.78 (track speed record). He beat John Lombardo's 7.57/192 in the first round, with a 7.19/208.81. But the car came up ailing in round two and could only muster a 7.99/171.42, losing to Ed Lenarth's 7.64/181. At Indy for the US Nationals, a 6.895/214.79 qualified #3, but he lost a blower belt on the line in the first round, and Ken Safford advanced. That was the only NHRA national event that the team ran together. On September 13, Behling was at Lions for an eight-car All-American race. He qualified #1 with a 7.39, and in the first round, his 7.30/203.61 (Top Speed) lost to Conway's 7.26/202. He got back into the show on the break rule and beat Bob Smith driving the "Bad Bascomb's Ghost" car in the semifinals with a 7.60/196.07. In the final, he reran Conway, and once again, the results were the same. Gene got the victory while Arnie's 7.79/193.54 finished runner-up. By the end of September, Rich Siroonian was back behind the wheel.

Notes: 1750 lbs. Shotgun motor. Crowerglide Direct Drive. | Car debuted at the AHRA Winternationals and ran 7.57/193.12 to qualify fifth. In the first round, Arnie was matched up against Danny Ongais, and the Maverick had problems getting down the track. At the NHRA Winternationals, another 7.57 qualified the car fourth. The car ran 203 at Pomona, but still lost in the first round, to Larry Arnold. The car was totaled soon after. He was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals on February 15. Behling set Top Speed at 208.32, and in the first round, he got a "bye" run and ran 7.28/205.00. In the second round, he got out of shape and lost to Dick Bourgeois in Don Cook's Corvette. He set a track speed record of 205 at Orlando on February 22. His ET was a 7.53. Magazines of the day had different times for the car. Super Stock had it running a 7.34 while one magazine claimed 7.11/209. Ran 6.99 at US 30 on May 31/1970, to become the second six second funny car in the sport.

Notes: Drove the former Ongais car after wrecking Maverick. This car came to an end at Lions on June 21. A new engine was being tested and regular driver Danny Ongais had broken three fingers in the Baja 500 race. Behling stepped in to test the car. On the first pass the Mustang ran well, but on the second attempt, the front end came up. Arnie backed out of it and looked like he had it saved. Unfortunately, the car took a sharp turn and crashed hard into the guardrail. It bounced off and continued to roll about 100 feet downtrack before coming to a stop upside down on fire. Arnie was able to walk away from the crash, but the car was history. There were lots of other rumors about the Mustang's demise, but this was reported in a Drag News Magazine from '70. Ironically, this car was credited with a 6.96 way back in September of '69. The day before this crash, on June 20 at New York International, Leroy Goldstein ran the first "accepted" six second times.

Notes: The Logghe Bros built the "Ramchargers" new '72 ride. It used a 114" wheelbase and weighed 1,815 lbs. A Lenco two-speed transferred the 1,800 hp back to the magnesium 4.88 Dana rear end. The Hemi is stroked to 480, and it used Brooks rods, Venolia pistons, and General Kinetics cam. Enderle injection feeds the 98% nitro into the motor. The Demon body was made by J&E and painted by Customs Unlimited. Arnie was the 7th alternate at the NHRA WInternationals (times not reported). He was at Lakeland early in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.79. In the opening round of eliminations, Bobby Woods fouled against him, and Arnie advanced with a 7.08. He got another easy pass in round two when Fritz Callier shut off with a broken oil filter. In the semifinals, he faced eventual winner Richard Tharp, who was driving the "Blue Max." Arnie got out of shape, and Tharp ran 6.61 to win. The "Ramchargers" next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Almost 40 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Behling would rather forget this race as the Demon broke a rear-end during qualifying, and Arnie hit the ditch at the end of the turnoff road. We needless to say, they failed to qualify. By May, Jim Paoli was behind the wheel of this car.

Notes: Real style Corvette, just longer. Dave sez: My first Funny Car was in '72 I think. It was patterned after Jim Dunn's car with a high gear 392. Home built (literally) and ran in the high country of New Mexico, Colorado, and West Texas. I believe the best was a 7.67/191 at Amarillo.

Notes: Huge wheelstand: I was racing John Collins in McEwen's car first-round. They sat behind the line for a very long time while I was staged waiting for them. By the time they staged, my motor was so hot and lean that it was idling like a Cadillac. As soon as I touched the pedal, it went up all the way to the parachutes. Other than flattening the front wheels and knocking off the oil filter, it did little damage. The car went on to run a 6.52 at Seattle the next month and beat McCulloch at the 64 car show placing 4th quickest in the 32 fuel car show. As Bill Doner told us, "It sure is ugly, but it is fast. You can come back next year." - Dave Benjamin | 2 or 3 weeks later, on August 5th, he was at SIR 64, idling the 417 in the pits for what seemed like 10 minutes or more. (The body was off.) 4th quickest of the night at 6.52. - Joe Moore

Notes: Another "character" from the 70s, Dave "Nasty" Benjamin ran altereds and his early Funny Car efforts from his chassis shop in Albuquerque, NM. Benjamin alternated between racing Funny Cars and AA/FAs during the 70s. first funny car effort was Corvette in 72. This car, photographed at the 78 AHRA Winternationals, was destroyed on its maiden outing. Benjamin later took over the cockpit of Nelson Lengle's "Sno-Town Shaker" entry to finish out the 78 season then fielded his own floppers through the 80s and 90s. Benjamin was one of the sport's unheralded innovators introducing 3 valve heads, one of the first dual fuel pump system (80), etc. "Nasty" took his last funny car ride as an owner at the 1999 AHRA World Finals at Spokane. is currently doing occasional driving chores in the "Impulse" Funny Car.

He was severely burned at Ontario and missed the 1979 season. | Benjamin tells the story online of his fire and severe burns at the '78 Finals, caused by Nelson's stock, unbalanced, crank with a crack in it. No raffles or Benefit events, he said. He was at the '89 Funny Car Opener at SIR. The backs of his arms looked like medium-cooked bacon. - Joe Moore

Notes: First dual fuel pump car. Went 23 races without changing it. Dave moved to Washington in September 1980. In April, Benjamin was at Pueblo Motorsports Park for the NHRA Division 5 Opener. Only four cars showed. He beat Dan Lexa in the first round, with a 6.96/205.30 to move into the final against Rob Williams. Unfortunately, he lost a blower and even though Williams broke on the run, Rob coasted across the finish line first.

Notes: Ran revolutionary 3-valve heads. | Dave did not qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals when he hit the wall in qualifying. Benjamin returned to the NHRA tour at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of July. Only sixteen-cars showed so his 8.59/104.69 held up for the "bump” spot. He lost to Jack Holsey in round one, 5.994/228.54 to 6.595/212.46. Dave had trouble in qualifying at Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals, where a best of 8.246/117.80 failed to qualify. At Pomona for the NHRA World Finals, his times improved to 6.146/226.01, but he joined 20 other funny car racers in failing to bump Gary Densham’s 5.851 out of the last spot in the field.

Notes: JP-1 with 3-valve heads. Dave attempted to qualify at the NHRA Northwest Nationals, but his 5.900/246.57 best failed to make the show (4th alternate). Dave was the eighth alternate at the NHRA Finals with an 8.855/105.68. Did Dave run 5.70 somewhere this year?
