Notes: Dave was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race in March. It was a sixteen-car show and he qualified #5. An opening round 7.15/142.40 advanced when John Collins broke and in round two his 6.93/206.42 beat low qualifier Jim Dunn. Unfortunately, he lost to Sush Matsubara in the semifinals. |

Notes: Uyehara looked like the car to beat at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He "only" qualified #12 for the 32 car field with a 6.66/226.13, but he picked up two tenths and ran 6.46/230.17 in the opening round of eliminations to beat John Collins' 6.72/209. That was Low ET of round one, and he also set Low ET of round two with his 6.47/220.04, taking out Larry Christopherson's 6.71/199. Unfortunately, in round three, a blown rear end slowed him to a 7.29 that lost to the eventual winner Don Schumacher, who ran 6.46/218 to advance. Dave was driving Larry Huff's car at the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.97. He lasted until the semifinals before he lost to the eventual winner Tom Hoover. Also reported to have run 6.51 somewhere. |

Notes: The "Kamikaze" Monza was finished in time for Bakersfield March Meet. Unfortunately, Uyehara failed to qualify for the show. At the opening NHRA Division Seven race at Fremont. It was only the team's third outing, but Dave herded the car to a 6.15/229.00 to qualify low for the field. Don Prudhomme was second at almost a tenth back with a 6.24. But in the first round, Dave's 6.44/223.32 lost to John Lombardo's 6.41/214. At the OCIR "Fox Hunt" race, a 6.47 qualified #4. But the car had issues and was unable to run in eliminations. |

Notes: Valadez had a lot of "racer's luck" on his side on August 3 when he was racing at Kansas City for the AHRA Drag Nationals. It was an eighteen-car show. In the first round of eliminations, his 7.19/200.89 beat a tire-smoking Vic Cecelia at 8.91. In round two, Tom Hoover's brakes failed, and he rolled through the beams. Johnny ran 9.52 to advance. A third-round 7.33 also advanced when Ira Hollensbe broke on the line. He then got the "odd lot" solo in the semifinals and made an easy pass. His luck came to an end in the final when he faced Tom McEwen. Johnny's car gave up the ghost as the "Goose" ran 6.49/218 for the victory. | R/U as a Vega in '75 to McEwen at AHRA Kansas City. 1975 PHR Yearbook. - Joe Moore |

Notes: The car debuted in 1968 with Chevy power and different owners, but Van Sant drove. In 69, he took over the project and added a 354 Chrysler to power the car to several local wins. Mike served as team captain at OCIR Manufacturer's Championships as part of the Wacky Racer team, basically, cars whose power plants didn't match their body styles, e.g., Hemi-powered Chevy, etc. The car ran in 1970 throughout the East with Mike Crowe, where it crashed at Atco Dragway, although Van Sant also drove. This car deserved more recognition as it was a top runner. A 7.98 qualified Mike eighth at the HRM Championships on March 16, and a first-round 8.09/185.18 advanced when Larry Fullerton fouled. A second-round 8.04/187.29 beat Steve Bovan's 8.06/179, but Pat Foster's 7.64/191.89 beat his 7.96/187.89 in the semis. Lions held an eight-car show on March 22, and Mike qualified fifth with a 7.94, then went 8.08/188.67 over Dave Beebe in the Super Chief, followed by a 7.71/191.08 over Leroy Hales. He singled for the win in the final with a 7.71/190.67 when Ron O'Donnell lost to fire on the line in a Don Schumacher 'Cuda. Another eight-car show was run on April 13 at Irwindale, and Mike's 8.06 qualified sixth, but he fouled in round one. At Lions on April 19, he qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 7.75. He lost to Danny Ongais in the first round. Twenty-one cars showed for 16 spots at Irwindale on April 26, and the Invader qualified second with a 7.72/187.50. A 7.68/191.48 got him into the second round, where his 7.82/190.66 beat Randy Walls' 7.89/183. Ed Lenarth smoked the tires in the semis, and Van Sant's 7.71/191.48 advanced to the finals, where he lost to Ongais' 7.37/193.54 in the M/T Mustang with an 8.01/181.44. At the OCIR Manufacturer's Open on May 3, Mike qualified #1 on the GM team with a 7.51/194.80, which held up for Top Speed. He won his first and second-round races with sub-par times when his opponents had problems, and then he lost to Rich Siroonian in round three. Back at Irwindale on May 17 for an eight-car show, Mike's 7.71/190.26 won the first round, and he and Dave Beebe both broke in the semis with the Corvette out-coasting the Charger. But Mike could not repair it for the final, so Beebe got back in on the break rule. Still, at Irwindale for another eight-car show on May 30, Van Sant's 7.55/196.06 advanced to the semis, where he lost fire. The next day (May 31) at OCIR for the Funny Car 500, Mike's 7.61/195.65 qualified fourth, but he got crossed up and lost in the first round. He then went to Seattle for the Travelon's Fuel Championships on June 8 and qualified #1 with a 7.72/196.06 and ran Low ET and Top Speed with a first-round win at 7.68/196.56 before losing in the semis to Mike Miller's holeshot 8.09/180 to the Invader's 8.08/184. On June 21, at the Lions' AHRA Grand American Championships, Mike won over Gary Gabelich in an all-Corvette semifinal, 7.41/195.65 to Gary's 8.14/181.81. He was to face Ongais again for the money, but no final race was run due to the lateness, and they split the money. Still, at Lions for an eight-car race on June 28, Mike set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 7.48, and a first-round win at 7.63/196.07 set Top Speed, but a blown motor in the semis ended his chances for a win. Another semifinal finish came at the Irwindale July 4 race when Ongais' 7.39/198.66 beat Van Sant's 7.60/194.80. Ongais' 7.42/192.72 beat the Invader again in the semis at Irwindale's eight-car show on July 12. Mike did set Top Speed at 196.92. At the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19, the Invader team was off its game, qualifying eight with an 8.01. In the opening round, his 8.14 beat Warren Gunter's 8.68. He shut off on the line in the second round against Gary Gabelich in the "Beach City" Corvette. Irwindale held a sixteen-car show on July 26, and once again, Mike set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.37/197.10, but the pass cost him an engine, and he could not run in eliminations. On August 2 at Lions for an eight-car show, a 7.56/195.22 got him into the semis, where engine problems put him out. He had problems again on August 30 at Lions for the Drag News Nationals. This time, he broke in the first round against Leroy Hales. Van Sant finished runner-up on September 1 at an eight-car show at Irwindale when he got crossed-up in the final and lost to Johnny Wright's Corvette at 7.61/191. Earlier, he qualified second with a 7.72 and ran 7.65/186.36 and 7.97/187.50 to make it final. At OCIR for an eight-car race on September 6, he qualified last at 8.85, but then his 8.12/167.59 won his first race, but then the car caught fire from oil leaking from a valve cover gasket. The safety crew extinguished the fire. His 7.85/161.87 won in round two, but the car went up in flames again. Mike had had enough and parked the car for the night. Another eight-car show at Lions on September 13 saw Mike's 7.51/176.12 win his first-round race, but Gordon Mineo's 7.55/193.13 beat his 7.52/185.56 in the semis. A 7.85 qualified the Invader fourth at an eight-car show at Irwindale on September 21, but he lost to Steve Bovan's 7.71/194 Camaro in the first round when he got crossed up. A well-deserved victory came at Lions on October 4 when Mike set both Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 7.24/199.11, beating Mineo's 7.85/161. A semifinal round 7.36/185.56 beat Marv Eldridge, whose Corvette nipped the guardrail, and a final 7.47/196.07 beat Ed Carter's Corvette. On October 11, Van Sant showed up at OCIR, wheeling an M/T Mustang. Bob Smith replaced him in the Invader. The switch was short-lived as Van Sant was back in the car on November 7 for the Manufacturers' Meet at OCIR, where he was the top qualifier for the wacky racers with a 7.36. He won all three of his races with a 7.48/194.80 over Terry Hedrick, a 7.80/187.50 over Ongais, and a 7.47/194.80 over a transmission-exploding Don Schumacher. At Irwindale on November 23 for a 32-car Funny Car show, Mike won his first race with a 7.89/190.26, but a blown rear end finished him in round two. On November 29, Lions held an eight-car show, and Larry Reyes 7.21/205.47 in the Hawaiian beat Mike's 7.30/200.44 in the first round. And then, on December 6 at OCIR, the Corvette curse came to haunt the team. After running a qualifying 7.40 (good enough for third), the motor blew, causing a fire, and the Corvette's body was blown off the chassis. Mike was OK, but the car was not, and the first alternate, Ray Alley, replaced him in the field. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Car ran in the high 7.20 range on a really good day, and cracked 200 on may occasions. Van Sant was team captain for the Wacky Racer team (in essence cars whose power plants differed from the body brand) at the 69 Manufacturer's meet. Won a lot of races, too. Car was campaigned throughout the 1970 season. Team burned the body off at Rockford, IL, and replaced the body with a Camaro to finish the season. Solano & Van Sant Invader Cuda was a different car. |

Notes: The car debuted in classic Invader livery with Van Sant driving. Van Sant ventures off with Mickey Thompson to run one of his cars on Coke Circuit. The car later resurfaced in 71 as Contemporary Fiberglass Spl. - Mike Gagnon | Mike was at OCIR on March 14 for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.30, but in the opening round, he lost oil pressure and shut down on the line against eventual winner Danny Ongais. He also set Low ET in qualifying on March 28 at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. Unfortunately, it came at a price as he could not run in the first round due to engine problems. |

Notes: I think that the Mustang being referenced here belonged to Stone, Woods and Cook, not Mickey Thompson. Mickey Thompson ran a Vega and a Pinto about this time. Van Sant was hired driver for SWC Mach I. It was the last in the series of SWC machines. Van Sant bought the car in 73 and reknewed his own racing efforts with the car re-named the Invader. He basically ran this car for years, replacing bodies as new styles surfaced. |

Notes: The car raced as the "Stone, Woods & Cooke" Swindler III. Mike had a good season in '73 behind the wheel of the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. He was a regular around the no-cal scene and ran very well. His season started On January 7 at Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified #7 with a 6.98. In the opening round, his 6.60 beat Jim Murphy's new Satellite, and in round two, his 6.82/212.26 beat Leroy Chadderton's 6.86/217 in the "Hawaiian." His 6.80/214.79 fell to Butch Maas' 6.77/204 in the M/T Grand Am in the semifinals. Things didn't go too well at the second OCIR All-Pro race, where he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. The following week(January 28), Van Sant was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #24 with a 6.81/187.89. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.54/195.65 lost to the eventual winner Don Schumacher's 6.58/208. He was one of the 58 cars that had attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but the track was so horrible that no one could hook up and make a good run there. It only took a 7.84 to qualify, and Mike was among many who failed to qualify. He was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. A 6.80 qualified #5 and gave him the right to face low qualifier Sush Matsubara in the first round. Sush smoked the tires in their race, and Mike's 6.88/206.89 advanced. Unfortunately, an off pace 7.18/202.70 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.70/218. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #12 and beat Paula Murphy in the first round. In round two, he beat Twig Zeigler's 7.48 with a 7.25/207.84. He found himself in the semifinals once more, but he lost to Ed McCulloch there. Shortly after that (March 10), he was back at OCIR for an eight-car show. He ran 6.89 to qualify #6, and in round one, his 7.02/208.81 lost to Stan Shiroma's 6.80/211. On March 18, the "Stone, Woods and Cook" car was at Fresno Dragway for the Winter Race of Champions. It was another eight-car show, and Mike's 6.83 qualified #3. He had an interesting first-round when his opponent, Larry Christopherson, had his throttle stick wide open on his burnout. The "Arizona Wildcat" Vega crashed hard into the guardrail. Larry was ok, but this allowed Mike to solo with a 6.88/213.27 into the semifinals. But then he had some bad luck as the Mustang failed to fire for his race against the eventual winner Dave Beebe driving the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. The following week (March 24), OCIR held its final All-Pro race. The final race featured sixteen-car fields, and Mike's 6.72 qualified #4. He made an easy solo in round one, when Bob Pickett, driving the "Lil Demon," broke. But in round two, his 7.10/208.33 lost to Chadderton's 6.96/210. Early in April, OCIR held another eight-car event. Van Sant qualified on the "bump" with a 7.44. In the opening round, he improved to a 6.99/206.42 to advance over a broken Beebe. |

Notes: Mike was driving the "Stone, Woods and Cooke" Mustang at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32 car field and his 6.81/187.89 qualified #24. He lost to eventual winner Don Schumacher in the first round. Van Sant’s off pace 7.54/195.65 lost to Don's 6.58/208. The team then went to OCIR for the third All-Pro race where Mike lasted until the semifinals before losing to Tom McEwen, who would also go on to win. The traction was horrible at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and Van Sant failed to qualify. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Mike qualified in the lower half of the field, but still managed a semifinal finish to Ed McCulloch. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 24 and it featured sixteen-car fields in the nitro classes. Mike qualified #4 and he advanced in the opening round when Bob Pickett broke. In round two he lost to Leroy Chadderton driving the "Hawaiian.” He was back at OCIR for an eight-car show shortly after that, where his 6.89 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he lost to Stan Shiroma in the first round. |

Notes: Mike was driving the "Hawaiian" on March 23 at Irwindale's Fox Hunt race. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.68 qualified #7. In the first round, his 6.64/220.04 lost to Danny Ongais' 6.6/217. But he got back into the show on the "break rule" when Ed McCulloch come not return in the semifinal due to a broken crankshaft. Van Sant made good in the semifinal when he set Low ET with a 6.55/221.13 that beat Ongais' 6.81/186. He faced Bob Pickett, who was driving Pete Everett's "Lil Demon" in the final. The two had a good race that had Bob's 6.64/218 win over Mike's 6.71/218.44 runner-up effort. The following week (March 31), he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, his 6.66 in the opening round lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.50. |
