Notes: Bolger qualified #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.25/269.29. In the first round, his 5.24/280.54 beat Gary Densham's 5.28/285. In the second round, he pulled an upset as his 5.31/278.12 defeated low qualifier John Force's 5.39/278. His run ended in the semi-final, where his 5.32/278.72 fell to Chuck Etchells' 5.12/285. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.19/279.50. In the opening round, he slowed to 5.36/269.38 in a loss to Etchells' 5.20/290. Houston was not kind to the team as Bolger had all kinds of problems, and his 7.36 best failed to qualify. It was his first DNQ since the '93 NHRA U.S. Nationals. His first run was 10.38, and he followed that with times of 12.52, 8.69, and finally, the 7.36. Things went much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.24/270.83 qualified #8. Once again, Etchells beat him in round one. The next stop was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. Bolger ran 5.26/280.63 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. This time he lost to Al Hofmann in the first round. At Atlanta, he qualified #7 at 5.27/282.84 but getting past that first round continued to be tough as he lost to Densham this time. Memphis was next on the NHRA calendar, and Bolger qualified #12 for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.38/277.52. Force stopped him in round one. Photo from US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan.

Notes: Bolger started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with a 5.27/284.36. In round one, a better 5.24/284.53 fell to Dale Pulde's 5.23/276. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.33/284.27 qualified #14. In the opening round, he picked up to a 5.24/283.55 to beat Richard Hartman, but he lost to Whit Bazemore in round two. Car owner Dale Creasy installed a computer in the car for the first time at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Qualifying there wasn't much of an issue as only 16 cars showed. Still, Gary's 5.31/272.56 was the slowest of the bunch. In the opening round of eliminations, Bolger's 5.63/200.57 fell to low qualifier Al Hofmann's 5.13/295. The next NHRA event was the Slick 50 Nationals held at Houston. A 5.30/283.55 qualified #15, and Gary lost to Tim Wilkerson in the first round. The team did not compete at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational event. Once again, only 16 cars showed in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A Super Stock-like time of 10.95/72.45 qualified #14 (two cars were slower!). But once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Gary Densham. Early in May, the team was at Richmond for the NHRA Virginia Nationals. A strong 5.18/278.20 qualified #9. After that, things went wrong. He beat Dean Skuza in round one, with a 5.53/206.18, but that came with the engine blowing and causing the car to turn into a fireball. The body was completely destroyed. Gary was alright, but the car was done, and there was no way it could be repaired for a round-two battle against John Force. Gary didn't miss a beat and was back behind the wheel at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #12 with a 5.29/275.48. Unfortunately, he lost to Tony Pedregon in round one. Bolger failed to qualify for the Big Go with a best of 5.28/287.53 but managed to qualify for the Big Bud Shootout. He lost in round one, to John Force (photo). Gary's best times of the year came in a round two loss to John Force at Topeka, 4.94/308 to 5.099/292.49. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy.

Notes: During the Winter of '71, '72, Jenner and Ron Hodgson purchased a partially finished '72 Vega funny car from fellow Canadian Murry Dyma after Murry decided he couldn't drive it following a licensing session at Orange County Raceway in southern California. The Vega had a blown 426 hemi for power and all the other necessary components to make it competitive in the AA/FC class. More than that, it now had a crew chief that could help it reach its full potential. Not wanting to waste any time and with the 1972 racing season fast approaching, Jenner placed a call to Gordie Bonin and offered him the ride. Once Bonin arrived from his home in the northwest and passed his competition license at Lions Drag Strip, the team was ready to go racing. - Bud De Boer. Two questions: Was Hodgson involved at this point? Did Bonin drive the car in the Winter of 71 or only in 72?

Notes: Qualified number 3 at Indy '72 with a 6.529 and finished runner-up to Ed McCulloch. Ran 6.769 at NHRA Amarillo 72. | Bonin debuted the "Pacemaker" Vega in April at the Seattle season opener. He qualified for the eight-car field and, in round one, beat Rich Rogers. Unfortunately, he lost in the semifinal. He did better at the Northwest National Open, also held in Seattle. It was another eight-car show, and Bonin ran 6.92/185.56 to advance over a broken Kenny Martin in the opening round. In the semifinals, his 6.89/207.36 beat Twig Zeigler's quicker 6.85/213. This put him into the final against Kenney Goodell. Gordie tried hard, but his 6.91/206.42 finished runner-up to Goodell's 6.68/207. Gordie qualified #9 for the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 (times unknown but between 6.63 and 6.68). He lost a 7.10 to 7.10 decision to first alternate Omer Carruthers in round one.

Notes: Bonin was driving this car at Martin, Michigan, on August 11 for the PHR Championships, where he failed to qualify after all cars ran the first-round, with only the eight lowest ET's advancing to the second eight for the race. On September 29, he was Irwindale for its Grand Prix race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.79 qualified #6. Unfortunately, the Charger broke in the first round, allowing his opponent, Frank Rupert, a solo into round two. Gordie qualified the "Hawaiian" on the "bump" at Ontario with a 6.531/219.51. In the opening round, his 6.68/215.82 lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.52/226.

Notes: Gordie started the year in the Hawaiian, but started driving the Pacemaker Vega in March. His first NHRA national event was the Grandnational at Sanair. He qualified #8 on the bump with a 6.813/212.76. Al Segrini beat him in round one, 6.65/218 to 6.809/215.82. Gordie qualified #9 at Indy with a 6.446/227.84. He lost to Billy Meyer in round one, 6.22/217 to 6.597/212.26. Bonin qualified #13 at the Ontario Supernationals at 6.482/220.04. He lost to Ed McCulloch in round one, 6.42/216 to 6.558/226.13. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1974. Also ran 6.49 at Tri-City. We formerly listed a 6.425. We need to validate that Gordie ran that time in 1974.

Notes: Gordie was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #9. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's Mustang. Unfortunately, Bonin's engine let go, and he had a major fire just off the line. He was OK. The damage was minimal, and the team repaired it in time to make it to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Gordie ran 6.410/233.16 (Top Speed) to qualify #11. A first-round 6.545/227.84 lost to Mike Miller's 6.43/220 in the "Green Elephant." At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, Bonin qualified #2 with a 6.30/233.76 behind Don Prudhomme's amazing 6.08/235. A 6.46/223.88 in the first round lost to Jake Johnston's 6.29/225. On March 16, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin continued to qualify well, running 6.437/230.17 for the #4 spot in the field. A first-round 6.678/225.00 lost to Tom Prock's 6.62/224. At the Seattle Opener, Bonin beat Jerry Ruth's Mustang in the first round, with a 6.56/220.58, but in his second race, he went into a wheelstand and shut off, losing to Ed McCulloch's 6.27/218. Bonin was back in Seattle in June for the second Olympia All-Pro Series race. An opening round 6.54/224.43 beat Bill Spevacek's off-pace 7.87/138, and in the semifinals, Gordie ran 6.66/227.27 to beat Mike Miller's 6.84/211 in the "Green Elephant" car. He faced Twig Zeigler in the final, and Bonin took the victory with a track record speed of 230.17 coupled with an ET of 6.32 over Twig's 6.56/229 runner-up effort. Gordie qualified #3 at NHRA Columbus with a 6.472/220.04. He beat Bob Pickett in round one, 6.990/216.34 to 10.35/68. Shirl Greer beat him in round two, 6.53/206 to a 9.59 shut-off. On June 29, he was at Edmonton International for the NHRA Division Six race. Things did not go well there as he lost fire on his burnout in the first round, giving Ken McLean a solo. Things went better at Bremerton for the next NHRA Division Six race. A 6.69 qualified #1; in round one, his 6.82 beat Larry Palmer. He smoked the tires in the semifinals, but his 7.14 was still enough to beat Don Rae's 7.86. He faced Miller in the final and got a 6.61 victory over the "Elephant's" 6.97. He was running a new Schiefer clutch setup rather than the conventional Crower glide. He ran a 6.432/217 best at the PHR US 131 race, losing to Denny Savage. At NHRA Sanair, Gordie qualified #6 at 6.62/213.27 but lost to Tom Prock in round one, 6.54/216 to 6.67/217.39. Gordie was the seventh alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.560/227.27. He qualified #14 at Seattle at 6.980/195.22 and lost to John Lombardo in round one, 6.86/196 to 7.255/216.34. Gordie ended the year with a fourth alternate effort at Ontario. We don't have those times, but the third alternate was Paul Smith at 6.439.

Notes: Bonin debuted his new Monza at Beeline for the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #4 with a 6.40/223.88 and lasted until the second round where his 6.86/181.81 lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.31/231. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #7 with a 6.25/221.13. Bonin beat Twig Zeigler's 6.61/216 in the opening round with a 6.35/212.76, but in round two, he got crossed-up and shut off against Tom Prock who advanced with a 6.27/212. He competed at the OCIR East vs. West Meet and then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He did really well there, beating Neil Leffler driving the Keeling and Clayton Mustang and setting Top Speed of the meet for FCs in the semifinals at 226.70 while beating Jim Dunn. He lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Another runner-up finish came at Firebird Raceway's Funny Car Championships in April. He had Low ET at 7.00 on the slippery track and in the final lost to Ed McCulloch's 7.69/212 with a quicker 7.58/210.69. | Gordie ran 6.59 at the NHRA Summernationals and 6.34/225.44 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/76.

Notes: This was Bonin's best season since he started driving Funny Cars. It started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he debuted his new Firebird. He qualified #12 with a 6.37, and in the first round, picked up to 6.18/239.36 to beat Dale Emery's close 6.19/229. He then beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" before losing to Raymond Beadle's 6.41 in the "Blue Max" with a quicker, but later 6.40 in the semifinals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified with a 6.35. Bonin ran a best of 6.10 before losing to eventual winner Eddie Pauling's 6.03 in the semifinals. He dominated the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #1 with a 6.26/238.72 (Top Speed). He beat Dodger Glenn in the first round, and then set Low ET in round two with a 6.19/236 over Gary Burgin. In the semifinals, he dispatched Beadle with a 6.64/236. In the final, he raced veteran Roger Lindamood. Bonin took his first NHRA national event victory. Gordie then stopped off at OCIR for an eight-car show where he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.13/240.00 before beating Dale Pulde in the final with a 6.26/236.84. He then won the Portland Funny Car Opener. There he set Low ET and Top Speed with a track record 232.95. The next day he went to Seattle and won its Funny Car Opener. Once again, he had the top times at 6.37/230.00. Bonin beat Terry Capp in the final. On April 9, he was at Irwindale's 64 car race. While he failed to reach the finals, he did run a best of 6.34/235.60. He did reach the final at the NHRA Division Six race at Firebird Raceway. There, his 6.58/227.76 times were good for both Low ET and Top Speed, but in the final, he fouled against Rob Bruins, who was driving the "Green Elephant." Gordie won the NHRA Division 6 race at Mission Raceway. He was runner-up at the third Division 6 race in Seattle. He set Low ET at 6.22 before running 6.57/219.51 in the final only to lose to Mike Miller's 6.37/231. In June, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. Bonin qualified #9 at 6.25/233.76, and in the first round, low qualifier, Burgin, fouled away a 6.15/234 while Bonin advanced with a 6.27/226.70. A second-round 6.29/230.76 advanced over Tom McEwen's troubled 10.12. In the semifinals, he smoked the tire to a 7.09/133.18 in a losing effort to Don Prudhomme, who was long gone with a 6.17/235. He was runner-up to John Lombardo at the OCIR Nitro Championships before winning Woodburn's fourth NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.29/229.59 while beating Mike Miller in the final. He did not compete at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. On July 31, he was at Portland for a 32 car show, and while he failed to reach the final, he set Top Speed at 224.43. Up in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 7, Gordie qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.36/229.59. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Prudhomme. Don ran 6.21/234 to beat Bonin's 6.29/227. A week later (August 13), he was at Firebird Raceway for the Night Fire 500 race. All ten cars there made two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gordie didn't make the final, but he did win his two races. A 7.21/215.74 beat Beadle in his first race, while he shut off when Twig Zeigler fouled against him in his second race. The NHRA Division 6 final was held at Portland International on August 19, and Gordie set Low ET and Top Speed on a first-round single with a 6.20/236.22. He then beat Miller to reach the final only to have Beadle gate him off the line, and his 6.33/225.56 lost to Raymond's 6.34/227. Bonin was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 21. He qualified #1 with a 6.34/230.17, and in round one, his 6.30/230.76 solo advanced when Jim Liberman lost fire. Gordie had another solo in round two when Capp shut off, and Bonin advanced with a 6.38/219.50. He looked like he was on his way to another win as his times were the best in each of the first two rounds, but he failed to hear the call for his semifinal race against Beadle, and the "Blue Max" was able to make a solo run into the final. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.106/240. An off-pace 6.62/224.43 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.36/216 in the first round. Only fifteen cars showed up at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, so qualifying wasn't a problem. Still, Bonin ran 6.28/234.98 (Top Speed) to qualify #5 for the show. A 6.42/222.77 advanced over Bob Papirnick in the first round, but in round two, his 6.40/230.76 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.28/223. Irwindale held its last race ever on October 1, and Gordie was there. It was a sixteen-car field, and Bonin ran 6.69/223 in the first round, over Tom McEwen, and in round two, Prudhomme broke on the line, and Gordie advanced with an easy run. In the semifinals, he faced Lombardo and Bonin ended up having traction problems and shutting off while John ran 6.28/193 to advance. At Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals, Gordie ran 6.19/239.36 to qualify #5. Bob Pickett broke against him in the opening round of eliminations, and his 6.19/232 advanced. A strong 6.16/239 beat low qualifier Burgin's 6.25 in round two, and in the semifinals, a 6.22/232 beat Tommy Ivo's troubled 11.68. The final came down to Bonin vs. The "Snake." Prudhomme had run been running like a bracket racer, hitting 6.06 on all three runs in eliminations, not to mention his 6.05 in qualifying. So it looked like Bonin was done. But, both slowed to 6.3's in the final, and Bonin's 6.31/228.42 triggered the win light ahead of Don's 6.36/238. | Runner-up to Mike Miller at Seattle PDA. - Joe Moore

Notes: Number four qualifier at the 1978 Winters at 6.224/234.98. | As mentioned, he qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.39/229 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." But in the second round, both he and Tom Prock smoked the tires with Prock's 7.36/217 beating his 7.30/222 to the stripe. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He had won the race in '77 and was hoping to repeat—a 6.30/238.72 qualified #4. In the first round, his 6.43/233.76 beat Prock's 6.46/226. He got no time slip in round two but still won his race against Shirl Greer. His speed on that pass was 234.37. The car failed to fire for his semifinal race against Billy Meyer. It was later diagnosed to a broken lead from the magneto. He was at Bakersfield for the March Meet, where his first-round 6.29/229.00 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.37/232. On April 8th, he was at Seattle for its Funny Car Opener. But once again, he lost in the opening round. This time, his 6.75/222.22 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.41/214. The NHRA Division Six Opener was held in Seattle on May 7. Bonin qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.19/234.98. That was impressive, considering that he out-qualified Don Prudhomme, Tom McEwen, McCulloch, and others. In round one, his 6.44/231.95 beat Jim Dunn's troubled 11.31. But in the semifinal, his 6.41/230.76 lost to McEwen's 6.22/216. Firebird Raceway hosted the next NHRA Division Six race on May 21. Once again, Bonin qualified well, running 6.46 to get the #2 position behind Prudhomme's 6.24. But an off-pace 6.61/223.24 in the first round, lost to Twig Zeigler's 6.48/214. Shortly after that, he was at Edmonton International for its season opener. Eight cars ran two rounds of racing that had the two Low ET cars come back and race for the title. Gordie's 6.56/219.51 over Zeigler held for a final round birth. He faced McCulloch, whose 6.62 was the second-lowest time. The final was close, but McCulloch's 6.54/220 got the victory over Bonin's 6.60/214.28. In June, Bonin was at Cayuga for a best of three match race against Prudhomme. Being on his home turf didn't seem to help as he lost all three races to the "Snake." Don ran 6.3's on every pass while Gordie's best was 6.55/227.84. The other two runs were 6.86/161.29 and 6.84/218.97. He ran much better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.29/233.76 qualified #10. But a first-round 6.49/223.32 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.31/216. He was runner-up to John Lombardo at the OCIR Nitro Championships on July 1st, and a week later (July 9), he won the fourth NHRA Division Six race held at Woodburn. There he qualified #1 with a 6.45. An easy 6.73/229.00 beat alternate Paul Luppy in round one, was followed by a 6.43/231.36 in the semifinal that beat Mike Miller's 6.65/213. He set Low ET and a Top Speed in the final with a 6.40/231.95 that beat Nick Harmon. He barely made the field at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 6.30/234.37 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, Gary Burgin slowed to 6.40/231, and Bonin's 6.29/236.22 slipped past. But despite running his best time of the weekend, a 6.18/238.72 in round two, he lost to Lombardo's 6.12/236. Portland held its big 32 car show in August. All cars were to make two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Bonin made a good account of himself, running 6.36 and 6.32 (both at 231)to beat Bryan Raines and Jim Moore. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. He did not race at the NHRA Grandnationals. Bonin qualified #15 at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.24/235.60. A quick-leaving 6.28/234.37 beat John Force's 6.22/227 in the opening round, and in round two, opponent Billy Meyer lost a blower on the line, and Bonin's 6.41/233.16 advanced. He was stopped by Tom McEwen's 6.22/234 in the semifinals that beat his 6.29/236.22.

Notes: Gordie had a fabulous year in 1979. He won the Gatornationals, the US Nationals, and the World Finals. His Indy 5.979 was the 4th entry into the Cragar Five-Second Club. | Gordie started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified for the field, but he lost early. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 but lost to Tripp Shumake driving Johnny Loper's Arrow in the first round. Bonin always seemed to run well at Gainesville, and '79 was no exception. His 6.38 qualified #12, and his 6.47 advanced over a crossed-up Shumake in the opening round. In round two, he soloed with a 6.92/221 when Al Segrini could not run. More luck came his way in the semifinals when Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," broke at half-track, and Gordie's 6.93/223 got the win. He faced Tom Hoover in the final and got a great leave that saw his 6.93/224.43 hold on for the victory over Hoover's quicker 6.84/227. A holeshot also won him the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway. There, a final round 6.66/216.78 beat John Force's 6.62. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.20/236.22 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Segrini who was driving the "Custom Body" car. Bonin slipped to a 6.58/187.11 that lost to Al's 6.16/230. Although he failed to make the finals at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he did qualify #2 with a 6.39. H did not race at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals.

Notes: AKA 240 Gordie. At the NHRA Winternationals, Bonin set Top Speed in qualifying with a 6.18/245.23 that placed him in thirteenth on the grid. It wouldn't be fair not to mention that the front end was up on that pass, and he drove it through to qualify. Few drivers would have been able to save that run. In the first round, he beat Don Prudhomme with a 6.27/242.58 but failed to get the car stopped and drove the car into the catch net. In round two, he lost to Kosty Ivanof. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #15, and in the first round, he crossed the centerline and lost to Dale Pulde. He won the NHRA Division race at Beeline. In the final, he beat Bob Pickett's 6.42/227 with a 6.22 (Low ET) at 237.46. He also ran 6.18/231 at the US Nationals but failed to qualify on a 6.10 bump!

Notes: Jenner had nothing to do with this car. It was Ron Hodgson and Verheul. The car was new in 1980. Still, it was the same setup as the 1979 car, and it was an Al Swindahl Chassis Components car. There were two cars. One stayed in Canada and was pulled around to shows. The other one was a national event car. When we ran the tour deal in the NW (Portland, Boise, Edmonton, Seattle), we ran both cars and got twice the money. Frank Hall usually drove the local car. Leon Lippoldt - crew member | Qualified #6 at Bakersfield at 6.342/220.04. At Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, Bonin qualified #1 with a 6.68/223. A 6.65/219 beat John Collins' 6.77/216 in the first round, while he beat a tire-smoking Gary Densham in the semifinals. This put Gordie in the final against Kenny Bernstein. As you can tell by the times, traction was poor, and in the final, Bernstein set Low ET with a 6.54/214 to get the victory over Bonin's runner-up 6.68/202 effort. The team then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.18 qualified #6. Unfortunately, they lost to Bryan Raines in the first round. As mentioned, they qualified #6 at Bakersfield for the sixteen-car show. But Bonin broke the tires loose in round one, and his shut off 7.15 run lost to Densham's 6.52/224. Everything lined up the following week (March 15) at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Gordie ran 5.97/245.23 to qualify #3 (tough show!) He ran an easy 6.24/237.46 to advance past a fouling Shirl Greer in the first round. A second-round 6.16/242.58 beat Fuzz Miller and a 6.12/243.24 in the semifinal beat Bernstein. In the final, he was up against Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle." It was a good close race, but Bonin's 6.18/241.28 got the victory over Dale's 6.21/223.

Notes: We ran the turbo on several full passes. I believe the best was 6.27/230, but it's been 28 years. The last time we tried it was at the Sacramento points race in 81. Didn't qualify, so we put the regular stuff back on and won the race. LOL. The thinking was Denver was next and the turbos didn't care what altitude it was. They would just spin faster. Different combos were tried. Finally ended up just changing cams and then you could go back to the regular stuff. The clutch deal was real tricky as it tended to just jump when the boost would come in and was hard to control. - Leon Lippoldt | Photo shows car with the standard blower setup.

Notes: Roland got the sponsor, but no money ever changed hands. That is why Roland parked the car after this race. The team switched between two beautiful bodies on this car in '93: a purple one and the aqua, blue one pictured here at Columbus 1993. One half of the quickest side-by-side race in history at Houston Slick 50 Nats with John Force, Gordie 5.131, and Force 5.156. This team made its NHRA debut at the Supernationals. Car owner Roland Leong turned the wrenches over to Leonard Hughes, and he hired "240 MPH" Gordie Bonin to drive. Things started slowly when they failed to qualify at Houston, but things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin qualified #9 with a 5.36/286.35. He improved to 5.28/281.86 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Chuck Etchells' 5.21/274. NHRA's next event was the non-points Winston Invitational at Rockingham. A 5.37/276.32 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.42/268.01 advanced when Etchells broke. In the semifinals, Gordie had a bit more luck when Wyatt Radke broke against him, and his 5.33/237.34 advanced into the final. There he met Al Hofmann, and this time Bonin had problems and slowed to a 10.14/80.97 while Al got the victory with a 5.18/288. The team really picked up the pace at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Gordie's 5.14/286.53 qualified #3. Unfortunately, the throttle linkage broke in the first round, and his 6.58/134.60 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.72/195. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. A 5.30/282.22 qualified #5. Bonin picked up to a 5.23/279.76 in the first round to beat Jim Epler, and in round two, his 5.26/285.89 got around Etchells close 5.27/274. In the semifinals, Bonin slowed to 5.53/242.71, which lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.27/284. At Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals, a great 5.08 at 285.80 qualified #3. He beat Gordon Mineo in round one, with a 5.23/277.60, but in the second round, he lost to Hoover. It had been twelve years since Bonin's last NHRA victory, but at the Springnationals, he got another. In qualifying, a 5.23/289.48 (Top Speed) had placed him #4 on the grid. A first-round 5.27/282.39 took out Gary Densham, while in round two, his 5.24/288.73 beat Hofmann's 5.25/281 in a close one. Bonin had to do a bit of driving in the semifinals as his 5.31/284.90 beat Radke's slightly quicker 5.30/278. He beat Mineo in the final with a 5.60/194.34. He almost made it two in a row when he reached the final at the next NHRA race, the Western Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 5.27/282.75. A first-round 5.40/280.46 beat Densham. He lost a blower belt in round two, and the car slowed to 6.48/144.92, but it was still enough to beat a tire-smoking Hoover who registered a 9.80 in losing. Gordie had a close semifinal race with Cruz Pedregon, where his 5.37/271.98 narrowly beat Pedregon's 5.39/268. This set up a final-round meeting with Force. This was Force's race as he qualified #1, set Low ET and Top Speed, and in the final, his 5.25/283 got the victory over Bonin's troubled, shut off 9.97/82.16. Another final round appearance came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. Hughes tuned the car to a 5.45/259.44 in qualifying #4 in the thin air. Bonin made his way to the finals by stopping Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.52/265.33 and a second-round 5.45/273.55 beat Bruce Nilson. Etchells smoked his tires against him in the semifinals, and Bonin's 5.60/240.96 got him into the final. He faced Pedregon, and Gordie's 5.71/253.23 was no match for Cruz at 5.48/263. After all those good runs, Sonoma was a bit of a disappointment. The team qualified #8 for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.35/281.51, but Hofmann beat them in the first round.

Notes: Photo from the 1994 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Confirmed 5.080 at Englishtown 94 and 296.34 at Brainerd 94. Where was the 5.069 run? (We had an archived speed of 296.73 from Brainerd 94 - need to confirm). | Bonin started the '94 season on a sour note as his "Smokin' Joe's" Mustang failed to qualify at Pomona and at Arizona. At the NHRA Winternationals his best of 5.52/261.39 was good for the second alternate and at the NHRA Quality Care Nationals, he was first alternate with a 5.58/241.15.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1995 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. DNQ with a best of 5.47/274.97. Confirmed 292.39 at Maple Grove '95. Did Gordie run 297.49 this year (if so, it was not at an NHRA national event). | Bonin started his season at the Bakersfield Warm-up event in January. The team had lots of problems and the best they could run was 6.25/151.31. The following week, they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Crew Chief Leonard Hughes was having a rough time getting the car to hook up. A 5.36/273.97 got them into the show in the #15 spot. But an opening round 5.42/247.72 lost to eventual winner Cruz Pedregon's 5.14/285. The NHRA Arizona Nationals went even worse. Hughes was trying out a different engine combination. Gordie made runs of 7.05, 11.59, 5.54, and 6.05. His 5.54/274.30 ended up as the second alternate for the show. The NHRA Slick 50 Nationals was another tough race for the team. Bonin qualified #15 with a 5.56/258.69 and he lost to John Force in the opening round. Gordie qualified #12 at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 5.34/278.81. An opening round 5.39/270.43 beat Gary Clapshaw, but he lost to Chuck Beal in round two. The team eventually got it sorted out and had a pretty good season. Best NHRA national event ET was a 5.137 at the Ennis Fall event.

Notes: Wild Willie's Chevy-powered nitro funny car of 1973 was definitely not competitive on the national match race circuit. This was due to numerous minor "bugs." He spent most of the tour year sorting them out before getting any full passes worth recording. Being a master mechanic who could change his own pistons in his ex-Don Garlits tow truck in the middle of nowhere in the Arizona desert was certainly a plus. But changing injectors from Hillborn to Enderle, fuel tanks that were not adequately vented, losing blower belts, and burning pistons, among other things, almost every run, were some of his race car's problems. These constant disruptions prevented any match race wins. Despite the terrible year he was having, the worst of his NHRA top 50 driver career, The Wild Man lived up to his "handle." He surprised many of his opponents with great hole shots, come from behind "wins" to the eighth-mile mark :} And far out of shape two-handed driving, except when shifting, of course, somewhere in the mid-range. However, his funny car "act" with ultra wild, out-of-control smokey burnouts, sometimes in the other guy's lane, incredible wheels-up launches, and typical seat-of-the-pants driving was extremely popular with the fans then. In my opinion, his "Nitro Act" was worth more than several of the more popular and powerful Chrysler stroked Hemi Funny cars of that day who were making twice as much or more booked in money than him. Willie was match racing that year on less than a dollar, a shoestring, and a bucket of water. :} It was more like he was racing in the Funny Car Wars back in that day with nothing but a wing and a prayer. :} - Cliff Tarpy, aka Pete Allen - greenhorn crewman.

Willie went into a wheelstand in their first race, and he shut down. In the second race, his 6.78/212 beat Greer's 6.80/207. The third race was never run as the weather became a factor. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. Also ran 7.99 at Milan.
