Notes: Fiberglass Trends body & paint. This car was run in 1969. The 1970 version was all red and didn't carry the Javelin 2 name. Confirmed 7.77 at US 30. | Dick raced Don Schumacher at Aquasco for a best two out of three match race on April 13. Dick fouled away an 8.17-182.18 in the first race but came back with a 7.99-181.44 to beat Don's 8.19-185 in the second race. In the tiebreaker, the Javelin broke and Don singled to a 7.95-188 for the match race win. At the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Amarillo on April 27, Bourgeois' 8.36 beat Jess Tyree who lost a transmission. Fred Goeske ran the track's first seven (7.91) in the second race and Dick was in the other lane at the time and lost. At another Cavalcade race on June 15 at Epping, a holeshot 8.21-187 beat Tyree's quicker 8.08-176. In his second race, a 7.73-179 beat Goeske's 8.56-175. Unfortunately, he broke a rear end in his third race and lost to Ken Safford. National Trail held a Cavalcade race on August 17. Bourgeois' singled with an 8.17 in the first race when Kelly Chadwick broke a driveshaft. In the second race, a 7.75-189.46 beat an ailing, Stone-Woods-Cooke Mustang driven by Ken Safford at 8.93. In the third race, Gary Dyer's 7.83-194 beat his fouling 8.16-186.32. Dick ran a 7.47-196.93 to qualify ninth at the US Nationals on Sept 8. He improved to a 7.45 in the first round, but that was no match for Leonard Hughes' 7.28. On Sept 14 he raced a four car round robin race at National Trail. In his first race, Jim Liberman's holeshot 7.89-186 beat his quicker 7.85-189.86. He shut off on the line with no oil pressure for his second race, and a 7.63-191.88 lost to Gary Dyer's 7.46-195 in the third race. He raced at the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Lion's on Oct 18, but he had engine problems and lost fire in the first round. At the Fremont Fallnationals the next day (Oct 19), he qualified first with Low ET of the meet, a 7.48. A first round 7.89-191.48 lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.68-193 in the first round. On Nov 1 he qualified first again at an eight car show at Irwindale. A 7.53-193.54 gave him the top spot. In the first round, he set Low ET of the meet with a 7.49-191.48 over Frank Pisano's 7.89-179.28. He lucked out in the semifinal when his Javelin lost fire on the line against Ed Lenarth. Lenarth did his burnout and his left rear wheel came out the car causing him to swerve and hit the guardrail. While all this was going on, Dick refired and ran a 7.98-172.92 to advance to the final. In the final he met another Javelin, that of Rusty Delling. Dick went on to run a 7.97-192.30 for the victory over Delling's 8.09-185. He qualified fifth (7.65) for the Wacky FC team at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet.

Notes: Came out with this car at the New Year's race at Fremont 1970 (although had debuted at OCIR on 12/14/69). Note the flower print paint job. | | Dick qualified in the eight car field at the second OCIR All-Pro race on Jan 18. He fouled against eventual winner Gene Conway in the first round. He was at Irwindale a week later (Jan 26), where he ran 7.69-184.80 in the first round to beat a tire smoking Jim Liberman, but a second round 7.95-193.96 lost to Charlie Allen's 7.67-170. The team really opened some eyes at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals when they qualified first with a 7.53-194.38. This was at a show where Leroy Goldstein, Don Schumacher, Don Prudhomme, Pat Minick, Jim Liberman, and Charlie Allen, and other luminaries failed to qualify. Unfortunately, he lost to Kelly Chadwick in the first round. Lions held an eight car show on Feb 14 that had 30 cars trying to qualify. Bourgeois made the show but shut off against Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. The next day Dick was running at Fremont for the Northern Nationals. A first round 7.42-196.06 lost to Jake Johnston's 7.32 in the "Blue Max."

Notes: Dick had a really good outing for a Chevy-powered car on Sept 16 at the New England F/C Nationals. It was a 32 car show and Dick advanced past the first round over a blower popping Kosty Ivanof. In round two, he ran a 6.72-204 to beat Fred Goeske who broke at half track. In the third round, a 7.20-184 beat Bob Mayer. Bourgeois lost to Lew Arrington but the "Brutus" Mustang went up in flames at the 1,000 ft mark. Lew was unable to return for the final so Dick was reinstated and ran the Tom Prock driven "Custom Body" Challenger in the final. Prock took the win with a 6.51-201 over the Vega's 7.16-179. By late '73 it was pretty much impossible to compete against the Hemi's with the Chevy motor. But the "Doug's Header's" car stayed with the "Rat" motor.

Notes: Hot on the heels of Jack Chrisman building the "Chrisman's Comet," several racers built car to challenge the big Mercury. Steve Bovan's "Blair's Chevy II" was one of the first to hit the track. Bovan had raced a Mopar AA/Modified Production car, but went with the lightweight Chevy II for the funny car. Bovan gutted the factory built car to come up with this "Match Bash" monster. Chevrolet's new big block 396 engine powered the machine. Steve sold the Chevy to Ed Carter from NorCal in 1967. Carter dubbed it the Chevy II Much and ran mostly at Fremont. The car's performance didn't change much. Bovan built the engine to run on 100% alcohol. Steve ran many match races with the car and ran CC/FD in NHRA competition. The Chevy used to lay down a smoke bank on a run. Bovan ran the "Blair's Speed Shop 396" in '65 and '66 with a 9.29, 160 best. (Courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Bill Duke, and James Ibusuki)

Notes: Ran 8.28, 187.10 at OCIR Funny Car Meet late 68 (Cars Magazine January 1969). -- DW | Bovan's Camaro was painted red on the passenger side and blue on the driver's side, with a wide swath of white down the middle, making for somewhat confusing profile photos. -- RT | Ran 8.01 at Lions. - DW | Steve started the '68 season by qualifying #15 at the Irwindale New Year's Day race with an 8.51. That alone was pretty good considering there were 33 cars trying to make the sixteen car show. Unfortunately, he was shut down on the line in the first round with a water leak. On Feb 24 he raced at a sixteen car show at Lion's. An 8.01 qualified #3 and in the first round, an 8.14-180.72 advanced over Marv Eldridge. He beat a wheelstanding Cecil County Yother in the second round with an 8.04-178.21. In the semifinal, an 8.12-178.57 beat Gas Ronda's injected Mustang at 8.72-141 to move into the final against Fred Goeske. Once again, gremlins stepped in and a blown transmission cost him any shot at victory in the final. He raced at Carlsbad the next day (Feb 25) for the South Coast FC Championships, but he lost to Jim Liberman's 7.89-182 in the first round with an 8.32-170.77. Thirty cars showed for another sixteen car show at Irwindale on March 3. Steve qualified #5 with an 8.17-178.92. He had a close first round win over the New Breed running an 8.26 to an 8.29. In the second round, Charlie Allen fouled away an 8.05-161.29 giving Bovan's 8.27-175.09 an easy win. Bovan then got around Liberman in the semi's putting him in the final against Don Nicholson. The track had a curfew and the final race between the two was never run so they split the purse.

Notes: AKA the Super Chief. This is Steve Bovan at OCIR in 1968. The car ran mostly on the West coast in 1968. The fans loved the car as the Keith Black hemi always ran great. Notes: Running 100% Alky. -- DW | This built-in-late '66 funny car wars survivor was getting a little long-in-the-tooth by the time the Class of '69 rolled in. -- RT | Bovan started the '69 season on a sour note when he failed to qualify at the Irwindale New Year's Day Championships. Steve ran an 8.15 in a failed attempt to qualify on Feb 9 at the second OCIR All-Pro race. The following week (Feb 16) he lost to Danny Ongais in the first round at the Stardust Open at Las Vegas. Another first round loss followed, this time to Jim Liberman at an eight car show at Lions on Feb 22 where Jim's 7.72-184 beat Bovan's 8.30-172.41. On March 16, an 8.10 qualified #12 at the HRM Championships. He ran an 8.12-185.18 in the first round to advance when Don Schumacher lost fire. Mike Van Sant's 8.04-187 beat his 8.06-179.64 in the second round. He ran well at an eight-car show at Lions on March 22 with a 7.82 qualifying #3. An 8.14-172.08 beat Leroy Hales' 9.35-129 in the New Breed but he hurt the bottom end of his Chevy motor forcing him to withdraw from competition and reinstating Hales. He raced at Irwindale for a sixteen car show on April 26, running a first round 7.88-180 over Ed Carter in the first round. But in round two both he and Ed Lenarth had problems and Ed's 8.26-177 beat Bovan's 8.93-175.09. By May 3, the Camaro was running a Hemi.

Notes: J&E body. Chassis by Mike Hoag/Blairs. Have photos of this car running a 427 Chevrolet in 1969. | After installing a Hemi in this car late April, Steve showed up at OCIR on May 3 for the second annual Manufacturer's FC Open. He qualified #3 in the four car GM team with a 7.81-189.46. In his first race, he beat the Parts Mart Camaro with a 7.77-191.84. And a 7.89-184.42 beat Ron Leslie's 8.28-182 in his second race. On May 31, at the FC 500 at OCIR, he lost a driveshaft and the race against Rusty Delling in the first round, but he had qualified well in the sixteen car field with a 7.87-181.08 being good for #5 spot. Bovan ran an 8.09 to qualify ninth at the PDA Championships on July 19. He improved to a 7.90 in the first round but still lost to Dave Beebe's 7.45. A sixteen car race was run at Irwindale on July 26 and Steve's 7.98 just got in (#16) and he lost early. On Oct 11, Steve attempted to qualify at OCIR for the Funny Car Open. On a 7.71-196.65 pass, the car blew a motor and burst into flames. He was ok, but the car was out of the race. The 7.71 would have been good for the fifth qualifier.

Notes: Also 7.89 at Deer Park. | At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Steve qualified on the "bump spot" of the sixteen car field with a 7.74. That was pretty impressive considering the cars that had failed to failed to qualify included Don Prudhomme, Don Schumacher, Leroy Goldstein, Pat Minick, and others. He lost to Leonard Hughes in the first round. On March 14, he was at OCIR for an eight car show. He advanced past the first round with a 7.95-185.56 but he blew an engine in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. He had more engine woes at the final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28. He lost one engine in qualifying for the sixteen car field, and then another in the first round while losing to Bob Pickett.
