Notes: Willie drove two different cars during 1976. He started the year in the former Pee Wee Wallace driven "Black Stang" Mustang II which was repainted and renamed "Wild Willie." He ran this car until mid-summer and then switched to the "Walt's Puffer" Monza, which he drove through the year's end. The photo of the "Wild Willie" Mustang II was from March 1976 at the NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. | Willie was at Warner Robins at the end of March for the NHRA Division 2 opener. Only seven cars showed for the eight-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Borsch ran 7.63/134.52 for the #5 spot in the show. He had troubles in the opening round and his 10.67 lost to Tom Prock. |

Notes: Photo from 1989 Norwalk. Car name misspelled in lettering job. | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Larry ran 6.820/203.16, which missed the 8 car field & was only good for 5th Alternate. | Larry qualified on the "bump spot" on October 8 at the NHRA Chief Nationals with a 6.87/204.87. In the first round, he improved to a 6.14/223.60, but lost to Tony McCallum's 5.30/269. The car was purchased from Dave Benjamin and the body was added. Low-buck deal to the core. |

Notes: Doug Thorley's new 1968 Corvair, Logghe Chassis, Fiberglass Trends one-piece flip-top Corvair body, Al Bergler aluminum. I think Watson paint, Kelly lettering. This car replaced Doug's '67 Indy winner. Dick Bourgeois and Earl Wade took the car on tour during the summer of '68. On a Sunday night at Motor City Dragway, Dick ran a 7.57 for Low ET over Lew Arrington's Brutus, Larry Reyes in the Super Cuda, and Don Gay in his rainbow Firebird. In '69, the Corvair body was replaced with a Javelin body but continued with the blown 490 Chevy and ran the Coke tour. | Bourgeois and Wade were at Carlsbad on February 25 for the South Coast Funny Car Championships. A first-round 8.34/171.42 lost to Gene Conway's 8.35/175 in the "Destroyer" Jeep. Dick ran a series of match races against Don Nicholson in March, but unfortunately, he lost all three to Nicholson. They were run on Mt. Houston, March 24 at Dallas, and March 27 down in Greer, South Carolina. In early April, the "Doug's Headers" Corvair was at Southeastern Raceway for a four-car race. He pulled a holeshot on Nicholson in the first race and looked to have the race won until he got out of shape and nearly crashed into Don's Comet. "Dyno" roared past for the win. In Dick's next race, Arnie Beswick fouled, and Bourgeois won with a 7.09 on the 900-foot track. Dick really laid one on Lew Arrington in the first round, on May 5 at Aquasco's Funny Car Invitational. His 8.31/178.21 beat Lew's very sleepy track record 7.77/181. It rained after the first round was run, and the race was canceled. At the Cecil Fuel Showdown on May 18, Dick fouled away a 7.95/184.80 in the first round against Roy Gay. Union Grove held the Olympics of Drag Racing on May 30, and although Dick failed to win, he set Low ET at 7.68. He met with Bill Lawton at Capitol on June 1 for a best of three match. He was at Gary, Indiana, for the East vs. West Funny Car meet the following day. Six cars were competing, with all making three runs. In his first race, Nicholson's quick-leaving 7.89/180 beat his 7.78/186. He came back to win his second race with a 7.80/183 over Ron O'Donnell's 8.30/176. Dick really cut loose in his final race, running a track record 7.55 at 185 to beat an out-of-shape Arnie Beswick. Bill beat him two straight. Once again, he ran Nicholson at a match race at Houston, and once again, "Dyno" beat him. Don won two straight before Bourgeois came back in the final race to win with an 8.39/177.86 over Don's shut-off run. On June 23, Bourgeois was called in as a last-minute replacement for Tommy Grove, who had crashed his Mustang into a telephone pole the night before in Virginia. Grove was supposed to race Terry Hedrick at Kinston. Hedrick was racing against Grove the day the accident occurred, and he had blown his engine. He showed up at Kinston and was unable to run. So Dick made three solo passes. He broke both ends of the track record on his first run with a 7.64/189.47. He also ran an out-of-shape 8.29/171.42 and a 7.93/187.50. On July 14, in Connecticut, Dick faced Lawton in another best of three match. Lawton won the first race while Dick set a 7.81 track record to win the second race. In the third race, Bill beat the Corvair to win the match. Dick was at Cecil County for the first day of the CARS Magazine Meet. He fouled away an 8.38/169.81 in the first round against Dick Loehr, but he found himself back in the running in the second round. There Dick ran 8.17/172.08 to beat Nicholson's blower popping Comet (he had crashed the Cougar). An 8.17/174.75 lost to Frank Federici's 7.91/179 in the "Shark" Corvette in the semifinal. Bourgeois then found himself at Capitol Raceway on August 13 for its Mr. Chevrolet race. In the opening round of competition, his 8.13/186.32 was defeated by Federici's 7.94/185. Dick got back into the show on the "break rule" for being the Low ET loser from round one. He almost made good with his second chance. He raced Malcolm Durham, and Durham blew a tire while Bourgeois advanced with an 8.42/183.28. Dick Harrell fouled against him in the semifinal, and he cooled it with a 10.00/102.97. He faced Bruce Larson in the final, and the two had a good race. They came off the line together, and just inching away at the finish line for the win was the "USA-1" Camaro of Larson's with a 7.90/189. Dick also ran 187 at Detroit Dragway in August. On September 21, he was at Lions for an eight-car show where 35 cars showed. All cars ran together in a qualifying round where the lowest eight ETs advanced into the eight-car show regardless of winning or losing. Dick ran a 7.90/183.66 over Jack Chrisman to qualify. He only needed a 9.03/172.08 to beat Rusty Delling's crossed-up run in the "New Breed" Firebird in the first round. The semifinal was a heartbreaker for Bourgeois and Wade when they lost fire on the line and gave Bob Pickett a solo into the final. Dick refired the Corvair after Pickett had run and ran a 7.98/172.41. Pickett was running 8.30s. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Ran 1968, very early in 1969. Replaced Corvair body with Javelin, became "Javelin 2." He started his '69 season at the Inwindale New Year's Day Championships where he qualified #14 with an 8.14 in the sixteen-car field (40 cars showed). He ran a 7.92 single in the first round, when Larry Christopherson lost a driveshaft. A second round 7.77 beat Jess Tyree (8.30). But he fouled against Don Schumacher in the semifinal. |

Notes: Fiberglass Trends body & paint. This car was run in 1969. The 1970 version was all red and didn't carry the Javelin 2 name. Ran a confirmed 7.77 at US 30. On March 2, Dick won over a sixteen-car field at Irwindale. He qualified with an 8.12/181.08 and an 8.10/182.18 beat Marv Eldridge in round one. In round two, he picked up to 7.91/184.04 to advance. In the semifinals, he dropped Steve Bovan with a 7.99/184.04. This put him into the final against Roger Wolford. The Javelin took the win. Dick raced Don Schumacher at Aquasco for a best two out of three match race on April 13. Dick fouled away an 8.17/182.18 in the first race but returned with a 7.99/181.44 to beat Don's 8.19/185 in the second race. In the tiebreaker, the Javelin broke, and Don singled to a 7.95/188 for the match race win. At the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Amarillo on April 27, Bourgeois' 8.36 beat Jess Tyree, who lost a transmission. Fred Goeske ran the track's first seven (7.91) in the second race, and Dick was in the other lane at the time and lost. At another Cavalcade race on June 15 at Epping, a holeshot 8.21/187 beat Tyree's quicker 8.08/176. In his second race, a 7.73/179 beat Goeske's 8.56/175. Unfortunately, he broke a rear end in his third race and lost to Ken Safford. National Trail held a Cavalcade race on August 17. Bourgeois' singled with an 8.17 in the first race when Kelly Chadwick broke a driveshaft. In the second race, a 7.75/189.46 beat an ailing, Stone-Woods-Cooke Mustang driven by Ken Safford at 8.93. In the third race, Gary Dyer's 7.83/194 beat his fouling 8.16/186.32. Dick ran a 7.47/196.93 to qualify ninth at the US Nationals on September 8. He improved to a 7.45 in the first round, but that was no match for Leonard Hughes' 7.28. On September 14, he raced a four-car round-robin race at National Trail. In his first race, Jim Liberman's holeshot 7.89/186 beat his quicker 7.85/189.86. He shut off on the line with no oil pressure for his second race and a 7.63/191.88 lost to Gary Dyer's 7.46/195 in the third race. He raced at the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Lions on October 18, but he had engine problems and lost fire in the first round. At the Fremont Fallnationals the next day (October 19), he qualified #1 with Low ET of the meet, a 7.48. A first-round 7.89/191.48 lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.68/193 in the first round. On November 1, he qualified #1 again at an eight-car show at Irwindale. A 7.53/193.54 gave him the top spot. In the first round, he set Low ET of the meet with a 7.49/191.48 over Frank Pisano's 7.89/179.28. He lucked out in the semifinal when his Javelin lost fire on the line against Ed Lenarth. Lenarth did his burnout, and his left rear wheel came out of the car, causing him to swerve and hit the guardrail. While all this was going on, Dick refired and ran a 7.98/172.92 to advance to the final. In the final, he met another Javelin, that of Rusty Delling. Dick went on to run a 7.97/192.30 for the victory over Delling's 8.09/185. He qualified fifth (7.65) for the Wacky Funny Car team at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet. |

Notes: Came out with this car at the New Year's race at Fremont in 1970 (although it had debuted at OCIR on 12/14/69). Note the flower print paint job. | As mentioned, Bourgeois was at Fremont for its New Year's Day race. Only six FCs ran. In his first race, Dick ran 7.77/191.08 over Don Schumacher, who broke a rear end. He also won his second race with an 8.79/171.42 when Kip Brundage fouled in the "Parts Mart" Camaro. Dick qualified in the eight-car field at the second OCIR All-Pro race on January 18. He fouled against eventual winner Gene Conway in the first round. He was at Irwindale a week later (January 26), where he ran 7.69/184.80 in the first round to beat a tire-smoking Jim Liberman, but a second round 7.95/193.96 lost to Charlie Allen's 7.67/170. The team really opened some eyes at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals when they qualified #1 with a 7.538/194.38. This was at a show where Leroy Goldstein, Don Schumacher, Don Prudhomme, Pat Minick, Jim Liberman, Charlie Allen, and other luminaries failed to qualify. Unfortunately, he lost to Kelly Chadwick in the first round, 7.76/193.13 to 7.85/184.80. That was Dick's last NHRA national event of the year. Lions held an eight-car show on February 14 with 30 cars trying to qualify. Bourgeois made the show but shut off against Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. The next day Dick was running at Fremont for the Northern Nationals. A first-round 7.42/196.06 lost to Jake Johnston's 7.32 in the "Blue Max." |

Notes: The Doug's Headers team was true to the Chevy engine for much longer than most. Most of the "loyal" Chevy campaigners had switched to Hemi's long before he would. "Jungle Jim" Liberman switched before the '69 season ended, and both Bruce Larson and Kelly Chadwick jumped into Pro Stock racing rather than install a Hemi in their cars. Bourgeois was at Atlanta in June for a sixteen-car show, but an off-pace 7.79 lost to Paul Smith's 7.78. Dick had a really good outing for a Chevy-powered car on September 16 at the New England Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32 car show, and Dick advanced past the first round over a blower popping Kosty Ivanof. In round two, he ran a 6.72/204 to beat Fred Goeske, who broke at half-track. In the third round, a 7.20/184 beat Bob Mayer. Bourgeois then lost to Lew Arrington, but the "Brutus" Mustang went up in flames at the 1,000 feet mark. Lew could not return for the final, so Dick was reinstated and ran the Tom Prock driven "Custom Body" Challenger in the final. Prock took the win with a 6.51/201 over the Vega's 7.16/179. By late '73, it was pretty much impossible to compete against the Hemis with the Chevy motor. But the "Doug's Headers" car stayed with the "Rat" motor. |
