Notes: Hot on the heels of Jack Chrisman building the "Chrisman's Comet," several racers built cars to challenge the big Mercury. Steve Bovan's "Blair's Chevy II" was one of the first to hit the track. Bovan had raced a Mopar AA/Modified Production car but went with the lightweight Chevy II for the funny car. Bovan gutted the factory-built car to develop this "Match Bash" monster. Chevrolet's new big block 396 engine powered the machine. Steve sold the Chevy to Ed Carter from NorCal in 1967. Carter dubbed it the Chevy II Much and ran mostly at Fremont. The car's performance didn't change much. These times are on blown fuel. This car was sold to Ed Carter and Bob Little in 1967, who ran it in 67 and 68, first as the "Chevy II Heavy" and then as the "Color Kart." Bovan built the engine to run on 100% alcohol. Steve ran many match races with the car and ran CC/FD in NHRA competition. The Chevy used to lay down a smoke bank on a run. Bovan ran the "Blair's Speed Shop 396" in '65 and '66 with a 9.29/160 best. (Photo courtesy Bob Plumer and Drag Racing Memories. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info courtesy Bill Duke and James Ibusuki). | Early in the season, Bovan was at Fremont for a best of five match against Tommy Grove. Steve won the match, turning a best time of 9.44/152.54 compared to Grove's 9.96/145. Bovan faced Charlie Allen in a best of three at Irwindale on April 30. He lost the match two straight with times of 9.74/149.50 and 10.15/102.15, while Allen's best was 9.56/145. On May 14, he was back at Irwindale for a best of three match against Dave Souza. The wedge-powered Mustang was tough, but on this day, Bovan was tougher. Bovan's Nova ran 9.86/145.86 to win the first race, while in the second race, his 10.29/143.31 lost to the Mustang's 10.33/141. The Mustang broke and could not run the third race, so Bovan soloed for the victory with a 9.93/142.18. Allen and Steve had a rematch at Ramona on May 22. This time it was to be a best of five match. Bovan was quicker in the first two races with times of 9.60/143.31 and 9.67/142.40, but Allen was sharper on the lights as his 9.82/143 and 9.70/142 won both races. Steve came back to win the third race with a 9.61/144 when Allen fouled, but in the final race, the Nova went into a wheelstand, and Steve shut it down, giving Allen the match. Bovan was at Irwindale on November 12 for its FC Spectacular. He warmed up with a 9.07/157.61. The race was run with all ten cars making two runs and the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race, he ran another 9.07 at 159.01, which narrowly lost to Gas Ronda's 9.06/151. In his second race, Steve's 9.12/158.45 was nowhere near Ed Schartman's 8.50/173 Comet. His times did not advance him into the final. Ran 9.55/152 per January 1966 Car Craft. Steve ran 9.11/157 at Irwindale CA 1966 per 11/18/66 Drag News. |

Notes: Bovan's new Camaro was based on a 128" Mike Hoag-built chassis. It used a Pontiac rear with 3.90 gears. A Torqueflite trans transferred the power back from the 427 Chevy. The engine used a Crankshaft Company Crank with stock cubic inches.ForgeTrue pistons sat on M/T rods. Mondello did the heads, and an Isky cam was used. The top of the engine featured a Don Hampton-built GMC 6/71 blower that was overdriven 24% and was fed via an Enderle injection. Cragar supplied the blower drive. On March 19, Steven qualified #1 for an eight-car field at Carlsbad. Fifteen cars were attempting to make the show, and his 8.46/172 got him the pole. In the opening round of eliminations, he lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Steve was at Cecil County on June 17 for a best of three match against Paula Murphy. Paula won their first race with an 8.86/160, but Steve came back to win the next two and the match. In their second race, his 8.90/157.61 beat the Mustang's 9.08/139. Bovan cut a great light in the deciding race, and his 8.96/157 held on to win over Murphy's quicker 8.91. - RH | Also ran 9.05 at 175.78 at OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67. - Danny White | Bovan's Camaro was painted red on the passenger side and blue on the driver's side, with a wide swath of white down the middle, making for somewhat confusing profile photos. He was featured in the 9/67 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. - RT | Bovan's '67 bests were 8.15/180.10. - BP |

Notes: Antique Fiberglass of Pomona made the body for this car. It was so thick and heavy that two men needed to raise it while a third put the prop rod in place. It also had a working driver's door that added to the weight. Steve started the '68 season by qualifying #15 at the Irwindale New Year's Day race with an 8.51. That alone was pretty good, considering 33 cars were trying to make the sixteen-car show. Unfortunately, he was shut down on the line in the first round with a water leak. On February 24, he raced at a sixteen-car show at Lions. An 8.01 qualified #3, and in the first round, an 8.14/180.72 advanced over Marv Eldridge. He beat a wheelstanding Cecil Yother in the second round with an 8.04/178.21. An 8.12/178.57 beat Gas Ronda's injected Mustang at 8.72/141 to move into the final against Fred Goeske. Once again, gremlins stepped in, and a blown transmission cost him any shot at victory in the final. He raced at Carlsbad the next day (February 25) for the South Coast Funny Car Championships, but he lost to Jim Liberman's 7.89/182 in the first round, with an 8.32/170.77. Thirty cars showed for another sixteen-car show at Irwindale on March 3. Steve qualified #5 with an 8.17/178.92. He had a close first-round win over the New Breed, running an 8.26 to an 8.29. In the second round, Charlie Allen fouled away an 8.05/161.29, giving Bovan's 8.27/175.09 an easy win. Bovan then got around Liberman in the semis, putting him in the final against Don Nicholson. The track had a curfew, and the final race between the two was never run, so they split the purse. Steve was at OCIR on May 11 for a best of three match against Allen. Bovan lost their first race with an 8.27/173.74 that fell to Charlie's 7.94/158. But Steve was good on the lights, and in the second race, his slower 8.11/177.51 beat the Dart's quicker 8.06/181. He did it again in the third race, where his 8.11/173.41 once again beat Allen's slightly quicker 8.10/181 for the match race victory. Steve had then jumped behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's Charger for a while. It was only for a short time as Dave Beebe later took over. But Steve really noticed the power difference between his Chevy and the Keith Black Hemi the Charger ran. Soon after, the Chevy was gone from the Camaro, and a Hemi resided in its place (see separate entry). | Bovan's Camaro was painted red on the passenger side and blue on the driver's side, with a wide swath of white down the middle, making for somewhat confusing profile photos. - RT |

Notes: Bovan's Camaro was painted red on the passenger side and blue on the driver's side, with a wide swath of white down the middle, making for somewhat confusing profile photos. - RT | Steve started the season with a Chevy motor (see the other 1968 entry), but he jumped behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's Charger for a while. It was only for a short time as Dave Beebe later took over. But Steve really noticed the power difference between his Chevy and the Keith Black Hemi the Charger ran. Soon after, the Chevy was gone from the Camaro, and a Hemi resided in its place. On June 22, he showed up at OCIR with Barry McGowen's Keith Black Hemi neatly tucked into the Camaro's chassis. Bovan was there for the Funny Car vs. Fuel Altereds race. He beat Sush Matsubara and Randy Bradford in the first two rounds with a best of 8.03/184.80. Due to breakage, he lined up against Charlie Allen in the third round. Steve fouled, but he still proved the power of his new Hemi as he set Top Speed of the day with an 8.03/187.10. He was at Lions on June 29 with the now Hemi-powered car. Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" Mustang broke in the first round, so Bovan soloed at 8.29/184.74. In the semifinal, he had transmission issues and lost to eventual winner Wendell Shipman. The following week (July 3), he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He fouled against Charlie Allen in the opening round, but he came back out for a couple of consolation races. In one of the races, his 8.25/185.58 beat Ray Alley who broke, and in his other consolation race, he shut off against Gene Modlin in Gene Conway's Firebird. He also ran a best of three best against the "Freight Train" driven by Bob Muravez at this race. In their first race, the Camaro blew its transmission. After Steve replaced it, Steve ran a great 7.63/194.38 beat he lost to Bob's 7.69/196. | Steve ran 8.28/187.10 at OCIR Funny Car Meet in late 1968 (Cars Magazine, January 1969). - Danny White |

Notes: AKA the Super Chief. This is Steve Bovan at OCIR in 1968. The car ran mainly on the West Coast in 1968. The fans loved the car as the Keith Black hemi always ran great. Nelson held a contest asking the fans to name the car. They came up with "Super Chief" for his Indian (Native American) heritage. The 7.68 was run at OCIR. - Danny White | Steve started driving the car in early April. He raced Nelson's car at Carlsbad on April 7 for an eight-car show where he made it into the semifinals before Jack Chrisman's 8.06/182 beat him. On April 13, he was at OCIR, where 20 cars ran the first-round, and the lowest eight ETs advanced into round two. Bovan had no problem advancing as his 7.81/195.64 was Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. In round two, however, the big Charger broke, giving Dick Loehr a free ride into the semifinals. He was back at OCIR on May 4 for its 1968 1/2 Funny Car Team Championships, but he failed to reach the finals. Another event at OCIR that he participated in was the Fuel Altered vs. Funny Cars race on May 18. Steve won all three of his races and set a 7.68 track record. He first beat a fouling Leon Fitzgerald with a 7.76/193.96. Then a 7.85/194.38 beat Willie Borsch's 8.17/187. Then he set his track record with a speed of 195.64 while beating Gary Reed's 8.06/195 in his last race. - RH | Four-page feature in 2/69 Super Stock and FX magazine. - RT |

Notes: Running 100% Alky. - Danny White | This built-in-late '66 funny car wars survivor was getting a little long-in-the-tooth by the time the Class of '69 rolled in. - RT | Bovan started the '69 season on a sour note when he failed to qualify at the Irwindale New Year's Day Championships. Steve ran an 8.15 in a failed attempt to qualify on February 9 at the second OCIR All-Pro race. The following week (February 16) he lost to Danny Ongais in the first round, at the Stardust Open at Las Vegas. Another first-round loss followed, this time to Jim Liberman at an eight-car show at Lions on February 22 where Jim's 7.72/184 beat Bovan's 8.30/172.41. On March 16, an 8.10 qualified #12 at the HRM Championships. He ran an 8.12/185.18 in the first round, to advance when Don Schumacher lost fire. Mike Van Sant's 8.04/187 beat his 8.06/179.64 in the second round. He ran well at an eight-car show at Lions on March 22 with a 7.82 qualifying #3. An 8.14/172.08 beat Leroy Hales' 9.35/129 in the New Breed, but he hurt the bottom end of his Chevy motor forcing him to withdraw from competition and reinstating Hales. On April 19, Lions held an eight-car show. Steve qualified #5 with a 7.71, but in the first round, while staging, he had a valve cover leaking oil onto the headers. The car caught fire, but it was quickly extinguished. He raced at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on April 26, running a first-round 7.88/180 over Ed Carter in the first round. But in round two both he and Ed Lenarth had problems and Ed's 8.26/177 beat Bovan's 8.93/175.09. By May 3, the Camaro was running a Hemi. |

Notes: J&E body. Chassis by Mike Hoag/Blairs. Have photos of this car running a 427 Chevrolet in 1969. | After installing a Hemi in this car late April, Steve showed up at OCIR on May 3 for the second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open. He qualified #3 in the four-car GM team with a 7.81/189.46. In his first race, he beat the Parts Mart Camaro with a 7.77/191.84. And a 7.89/184.42 beat Ron Leslie's 8.28/182 in his second race. On May 31, at the Funny Car 500 at OCIR, he lost a driveshaft and the race against Rusty Delling in the first round, but he qualified well in the sixteen-car field with a 7.87/181.08 being good for #5 spot. Bovan ran an 8.09 to qualify ninth at the PDA Championships on July 19. He improved to a 7.90 in the first round, but still lost to Dave Beebe's 7.45. A sixteen-car race was run at Irwindale on July 26 and Steve's 7.98 just got in (#16) and he lost early. On October 11, Steve attempted to qualify at OCIR for the Funny Car Open. On a 7.71/196.65 pass, the car blew a motor and burst into flames. He was OK, but the car was out of the race. The 7.71 would have been good for the fifth qualifier. |

Notes: At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Steve qualified on the "bump spot" of the sixteen-car field with a 7.743/191.48. That was pretty impressive, considering the cars that had failed to qualify included Don Prudhomme, Don Schumacher, Leroy Goldstein, Pat Minick, and others. He lost to Leonard Hughes in the first round. On March 14, he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. He advanced past the first round with a 7.95/185.56, but he blew an engine in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. He had more engine woes at the final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28. He lost one engine in qualifying for the sixteen-car field and another in the first round while losing to Bob Pickett. By '70, things started to take a turn for the worse for the talented driver. He lived in Newport Beach, California, and his winnings were light compared to his expenses. The rumors started to go around about some sketchy dealings. Bob was a DNQ at the Ontario World Finals (times not reported). He also ran 7.89 at Deer Park. |

Notes: The last of Bovan's cars. Car ran occasionally from 70 to 72. Steve did drive for others from 1973 to 1976. Best of everything in the car resulted in decent times (low 7s and 200 plus). Bovan fell on bad times with a bad group of people in the late 70s, which resulted in his demise. |

Notes: The last of Bovan's cars. The car ran occasionally from 1970 to 1972. Steve did drive for others from 1973 to 1976. Best of everything in the car resulted in decent times (low 7s and 200 plus). Steve moved to Costa Mesa in '71 and sold his old Camaro. He didn't race as much as he took jobs at a VW repair shop and, later, at a car customizing joint. He started to fall on much harder times as he was convicted for selling 1,200 lbs of marijuana. Things went downhill from there. Bovan fell on bad times with a bad group of people in the late 70s, which resulted in his demise. |

Notes: This was the car that ended Gas Rondas career at Beeline in 1970. Beautiful Molly paint scheme adorned the car. Ran low 7's on a really good day. The car was extensively modified in 1972 by moving the driver forward, the engine back and plopping a Vega panel truck body to create the famed California Stud rear-engine funny car. |

Notes: Former Gas Ronda 70 Mustang, significantly modified with driver moved forward and engine aft. The car ran high sixes when all went right, which was rare. - Bill Duke | Dave was at OCIR on May 26 for the Hang Ten Funny Car 500 race. It was a sixteen-car show and his 7.15 qualified #15. He faced Gordon Swearingen in the first round, and Bowman's reverser failed after his burnout. So Gordon got to make a solo into round two with the "Sopwith Camel." Bowman raced in the OCIR Lions Championships in June. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 7.24, but another 7.24/204.08 in the opening round lost to Joe Lee's 6.99/197. Dave was runner-up at the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 22. It was a sixteen-car show, and Bowman got a single in the first round. In the second round, he lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.13/196 in the "Mr. Ed" car with a 7.59/163.93. He got back into the show on the "break rule" when Lee's car failed to fire in the semifinal. So once again, Rowe raced Bowman, but this time the Vega won with a 7.20/207.85 over Rowe's 7.30/213. Dave tried hard in the final, but his 7.16/191.89 lost to Danny Ongais' 6.77/217. |

Notes: Look at how short this car was. Must have been the old AA/FA rebodied (with nearly a stock wheelbase Vega shell.) What a handful. |
