Notes: I think these are the only known photos of "Atilla," a blown fuel funny out of Chicago, pictured here in 1967. Owner/driver Charlie "Tuna" Brooks worked for Mr. Norm's Grand-Spaulding Dodge. Frankenstein-like, the '64 Dodge 330 combined a '65 Dodge front clip and a blown early hemi. Thanks to Wayne Minick for finally putting a name to the owner of this car! Photo of Atilla under the Union Grove tower by Jack Colburn from the Dan Pederson Collection. Two side views cribbed from an 8mm home movie by Timothy Airney, taken at US 30 (Gary). Notes: Cliff was driving this car at Aquasco on July 26 for the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. In the opening round, his 7.93 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 7.53. In August, he was at Niagara International for another Cavalcade race. He won his first-round race with a 7.61/180.36, but he lost in the semifinal. AKA Spirit of Dark Horse. Cliff finished the Coke circuit season in this car after Pulde moved to drive Dick Bourgeois' red Javelin. Photo from September 1970. |

Notes: After driving for Fred Goeske and Stone, Woods & Cook in the past, Cliff Brown went on his own in '71 with this Mustang. Cliff worked in Romeo Palamides’ shop so of course the 120" wheelbase chassis came out of that shop. Cliff choose a Halibrand Quick change rear end and early in the season his gears of choice were 4.52. The engine was a stock-stroke 426 Hemi that used a stock balanced and clearanced crank. He used M/T rods and pistons. The blower was built by Gary Dyer and was 33% overdriven. Brown used a high gear only three-disc Crower Glide unit with a Lenco reverser. The September. ‘71 issue of SS/FC magazine claimed that the car had run some 6.80s at over 210. |

Notes: Cliff's Mustang used a 120" Romeo Palamides chassis. It used a Halibrand quick-change rear end with 4.52 gears. He switched to a high-gear-only setup from the Lenco 2-speed he had used previously. He still used a Lenco reverser. The body was from Fiberglass Ltd. The Stock Stroke Hemi used MT rods and 5.5:1 pistons. A Howard's cam was also used. Up top, the GMC 6/71 was reworked by Gary Dyer and was overdriven by 33%. Cragar supplied the intake manifold and blower drive. The engine was fed by Enderle injection. Mike Beard served as the crew chief. According to features from various car magazines at the time, Brown was said to have run some 6.8s at 210 with the car. Cliff ran a confirmed 7.22 at Miami. |

Notes: Brown started his season at Miami-Hollywood in January for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #9, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Paul Smith who was driving the "Fireball Vega." Smith reset the track ET record while beating Brown in their opening round race. Cliff was at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an easy field to make as his 10.13 qualified #13. In the first round, he lost a supercharger and the race to Jim Paoli. In June, he was in Atlanta for their Funny Car Invitational. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the first round, Cliff ran a 7.08 to beat Shirl Greer's 7.22 in Billy Holt's new Vega. In round two, he lost another supercharger but still won when Frank Oglesby broke a reverser. The race was then halted by rain. Cliff used a stock stroke hemi to consistent success. |

Notes: Cliff was at Byron Dragway in June for the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. An opening round 6.67/215.22 fell to a 6.81/218 holeshot by Charlie Proite, and on his second run, a 6.78/210.77 lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.44/222. He attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals but failed to make the show. On Sept.29, he was at Bristol for the IHRA All-American Championships. He was the first alternate for the sixteen-car field with a 7.11, but when Pee Wee Wallace damaged a motor during qualifying, Cliff took his place in the field. Unfortunately, he lost in the opening round. Stock Stroke Hemi. Cliff also ran 6.62 at Indianapolis (not the nationals). |

Notes: Kelly Brown did really well driving this car at its first major event, the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.904/208.33 and an opening-round 6.89/212.26 beat Leonard Hughes. In round two, he made an easy pass when Bobby Rowe failed to fire. In the semifinals, Brown set Top Speed at 218.97 (6.81) while defeating Henry Harrison in Mickey Thompson's now Chrysler-powered Mustang at a close 6.96/213. He faced low qualifier Don Schumacher in the final. Don had been running quicker in eliminations, but the final was close. Kelly stepped it up to 6.81 in a runner-up finish to Schumacher's 6.76/218. Early in July, he was at OCIR for its Nitro Championships. He ran his remarkable 227.27 in qualifying, at the time, the fastest run ever. In the first round, he beat Bob Pickett with a 6.91/213.27, but he fouled against Stan Shiroma in round two. A couple of weeks later, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Only ten cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue, and Brown got the #7 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he blew the engine in the first round, and slowed to a 7.35/153 loss to Gene Snow's 7.05/196. Apparently, Kelly had some extra time on his hands on August 19 when he went to OCIR to test the new "Blue Max" Mustang for Harry Schmidt. Ed Pink was also there to see what the car would do. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.731/221.67 qualified #6, but a troubled 7.32/212.76 in the first round, lost to Jim Dunn's 6.97/200. His next stop was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, the following week (September 10) for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. All nineteen cars made just one pass, with the lowest ET being declared the winner. Brown ran 6.93/220 to beat Dave Condit's 7.03/214 in the "LA Hooker." His time was the fourth lowest overall. He was runner-up to Jake Johnston at Amarillo's NHRA Division 4 final. Not long after this, Don Schumacher and then Pat Foster replaced him behind the wheel. Kelly drove the Mr. Ed Charger at NHRA Ontario. We formerly listed a 6.70 for Kelly. Removing that until we get confirmation. |

Notes: After leaving the Barry Setzer camp in the fall of 1971, Kelly started driving the repainted Mr. Ed Charger of Ed Wills. He qualified on the bump at the 1971 NHRA Supernationals with a 7.06 and lost to Leroy Goldstein in the first round, after losing fire on the burnout. At the 1971 OCIR Manufacturers Meet, he qualified for the Dodge team and ran a best of 6.84 at 215.82. |

Notes: Brown started the season driving for "Mr. Ed" at Fremont's New Year's Day Race on January 2. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in the first round, the transmission broke against Gene Snow. At the 1972 Lions Grand Premiere (January 15/16), he was the last qualifier with a 6.64. A first-round 6.71/213.77 beat Leroy Goldstein's 6.89 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Kelly used a holeshot in the second round to beat Pat Foster, who was now driving Kelly's former ride, the Barry Setzer Vega. Kelly's 6.58/223.88 was good enough to beat Pat's quicker 6.54/223.32. He subsequently lost to Bobby Rowe (Hawaiian) in the semifinals. Kelly was the 20th alternate at the NHRA Winternationals (times unknown). On February 13, he was at the third OCIR All-Pro race, where he qualified #7 in the eight-car field. An off-pace 8.00 lost to eventual winner Foster's 6.85 in the first round. Kelly also made the semifinals at the 1972 March Meet, losing to Jim Dunn. |

Notes: This car was completed on Saturday, November 18, and made one full qualifying pass at the NHRA Supernationals that same day. The resulting 6.70/210.00 run was not good enough to make history's quickest funny car field. Kelly qualified #14 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 (times unknown). He broke against Billy Meyer in round one. Although initial runs were promising, handling problems, which were eventually traced to the poor aerodynamics of the Vega Panel body, kept this car from ever reaching its potential. Every Vega Panel tried in funny car was evil handling. A lack of downforce caused them to get loose on the top end, and many were lost in crashes. |

Notes: Larry qualified #1 at the 3rd NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley with a 6.27. It was pretty impressive considering that #2 qualifier was Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at 6.31. Unfortunately, Larry lost early and Beadle went on to win. |

Notes: Brown was at Green Valley Raceway's opener in March. Ten cars ran, and in round one, his 6.49 beat Chip Woodall. Unfortunately, the run hurt some parts, and he was unable to return in the semifinal. On April 16, he was back at Green Valley for the second NHRA Division Four race. His 6.62/214.28 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. He lost to Billy Meyer in round one. He qualified #8 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at 6.770/209.79. Larry then lost an amazing first-round match against Tom Anderson. Anderson's 6.770/216.34 just held off Brown's right-there 6.780/218.44. He then went to Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He ran a best of 6.44/222.22 at Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. Larry ran 6.80 at the Ozark Nats on 7/04/78. He then traveled to Baton Rouge in July for the final NHRA Division Four race. Only six cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car field. He beat Jim White in the "Tulsa Oiler" in the first round, with a 6.95/206. But the car broke in the semifinal, and he was unable to run eventual winner Tom Anderson. |
