Notes: Larry qualified this car #10 at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a 7.12. Unfortunately, a 7.18/209 in the first round, lost to Leroy Goldstein's 6.85/210 in the "Ramchargers" Challenger. | Larry's best NHRA time was 7.136, but need to confirm which car that was.

Notes: Larry was the low qualifier at Gainesville for the first NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.17/203.65. He beat Sid Foster in the first round, but his 7.21 lost to Larry Reyes' 7.10 in the second "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals. Shortly after that, he was at Miami-Hollywood for an eight-car show. An opening round 7.49/192.71 beat Leonard Hughes' very close 7.49/199, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a 7.80/184.04 that lost to eventual winner Clare Sanders' 7.74/191. On April 5, he won over an eight-car field at Kansas City. Arnold ran times on 7.40/187, 7.37/197, and finally, a track record 7.30/199 to win. | He also ran 7.19 at KCIR on another date. The best NHRA times were the 7.176/203.65 at Gainesville. Where was the 7.08 run? Larry also ran 6.11 at Dallas, GA (900 feet).

Notes: Larry was at Irwindale for its New Year's Day Race. It was a sixteen-car show, and Arnold's 7.06/205.94 qualified #3. A first-round 7.15/180.72 advanced, but he lost in round two. His next stop was at Lions for the first AHRA Grand American of '71. Over 30 cars attempted to qualify, and Larry's 7.08 just made the show. In the opening round, his 7.12 beat Don Schumacher's off-pace 7.35, but the "Kingfish" came up to the line ailing in round two and lost to Stan Shiroma. Irwindale held a four-car, pre-Winternationals race. Larry qualified #2 with a 7.05/211.76 (Top Speed). A first-round 7.21/178.21 beat Randy Walls, who lost an engine. In the final, he went up against Jake Johnston. The two had a great race, with both running 7.15 (Arnold at 209.78), but the "Kingfish" got the win light. Unfortunately, he didn't run nearly that well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, as he failed to qualify. He qualified #4 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.84/217.39, but opponent Wayne Mahaffey failed to fire in the opening round. So, Larry went on a single that saw his motor blow, and he coasted through with a 9.32 to advance. Arnold was unable to repair for his second-round race against Bobby Rowe driving the "Super Duster." Larry won the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario in November with best times of 6.84/212.

Notes: Arnold's '72 car used a 114" Mike Leiby chassis. It weighed 1,850 lbs. The Ed-Pink Hemi produced 1,500 hp. On one of his earliest runs, he ran 6.69/218. Larry was at Miami-Hollywood on April 23 for the Florida State Championships. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #2. An opening round 6.88/190.27 beat Harry Hudson, and in the semifinals, Ed O'Brien fouled, so he ran an easy 7.90 to advance into the final. He faced Al Marshall in the "Tyrant" car, and Arnold set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.78/217.39 to claim the victory over Al's 6.94/208. A week later (April 30), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He beat Charlie Wilson in the first round with a 6.58, and a second-round 6.62 beat Sid Foster. He had a bit of luck in the semifinals when Richard Tharp had to shut down the "Blue Max" due to a cracked oil pan. Arnold ran a solo 6.83. In the final, he faced the tough Barry Setzer Vega driven by Pat Foster. Foster laid down an impressive 6.40/223 to get the win over the "Kingfish's" 6.76/214.24 runner-up effort. In July, Arnold was at Beech Bend for its Funny Car Invitational event. Larry qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.60/214.28, but in the first round, his 6.74 lost to low qualifier Don Schumacher's 6.45. Soon after that, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. There, his 6.66 qualified #6. In the first round, he beat Steve Tansy's 6.92 with a 6.64. An off-pace 7.85 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.51 in round two. The best NHRA national event times were 6.629 at Indy and 219.51 at Gainesville. Larry also ran 6.56 Tri-City. Where was the 6.45/225 run?

Notes: In January, Arnold was at Miami-Hollywood's Funny Car Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show and he ran a 6.96 to qualify #7. He failed to reach the finals. Larry crashed this car in qualifying on May 6 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am. He was just finishing a run and he pulled the chute. High winds caught the parachute and the body was ripped off the chassis. Larry careened into the wall. The car was a total loss. He was OK.

Notes: At the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Larry qualified 5th with a 6.455/225.56. He lost in the first round to Tom Raley when the car lost the blower belt. Shortly after, he was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. It was a 32-car field, and he got a first-round solo. Arnold ran 6.50/163.13 to advance. In round two, the car got sideways, and he shut off in a loss to Gary Burgin.

Notes: Lew Arrington was one of the early funny car stars. Lew raced the infamous altered-wheelbase "Brutus" GTO out of the Northern California-based Goodies Speed Shop. A real big block Pontiac powered the modified steel-bodied GTO at first, but it could not stand the excessive amounts of nitro. A 398 (0.30-over 392) Chrysler hemi with Pontiac stamped on the valve covers replaced the pure Pontiac motor. Components: GMC 6/71 blower, Hilborn injection, Art Carr 3-speed Torqueflite trans, stock '65 GTO frame, straight-tube axle, rear-only drums, "Brutus" also was the first ride that made "Jungle Jim" Liberman famous, along with the "Samson," "Hercules," and "Hairy Canary" funny cars. The GTO ran high- to mid-eight second times. Arrington built a new Firebird in '67, while Don Williamson of "Hairy Canary" fame ended up with the much-modified GTO. Future fuel altered driver Don Trillo crashed the GTO bad enough to end its racing career. Times, not necessarily the season best, cited here from feature story in the 11/66 issue of Drag Race.

Notes: Specs: 398" early hemi, Hilborn bug catcher, TorqueFlite, Logghe chassis. Car was featured in 3/68 SS&DI magazine. – RT | Lou had his new Firebird at National Trail on October 22 for a best of three match race against Hayden Proffitt's AMC Rebel. In their first race, Lou went through the speed traps with all four wheels off the ground. The Firebird landed hard and suffered major body and frame damage. He had lost to Proffitt in that race and he was unable to make any more runs with the car. | Arrington brought both Brutus cars (the time and strip tested '65 Goat and his new Logghe Firebird flopper) to the first OCIR Manufacturers' Meet on 11/25/67. Slow times here may reflect teething problems. Lou lost matches to Charlie Allen and Cecil Yother. Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/25/67

"Brutus" also was the first ride that made "Jungle Jim" Liberman famous. Arrington built a new Firebird in '67 while Don Williamson of "Hairy Canary" fame ended up with the much-modified GTO. Future fuel altered driver Don Trillo crashed the GTO bad enough to end its racing career. Ran 8.53/168.28 at OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67. Lew started the season at Irwindale's New Year's race where he failed to qualify. On April 1, Jim Liberman beat Malcolm Durham at a match race at Capitol running 8.43/167.28 in the first round. But he lost a motor in the second and watched Durham win with an 8.97. For the third and deciding match Liberman rolled out his Jungle Jim Nova and won with an 8.75/162.74. At Aquasco on April 30, he had a match race against Hubert Platt. Platt's 8.39/166 won the first-round and the match when Lew spun a bearing and was unable to run. On May 13 the old teammates met up for a match race at Maple Grove where Jim Liberman set the track records at 8.29/172.74 winning the match in one race when Lew's motor blew and he was unable to run. The two met again on May 26 in the final of the UDRA Championships at US 30. Lew ran a best of 8.73 on the way to the final where his 9.38/154.64 lost to Jim's 9.16/157. On July 1 at Martin, Michigan, Lew lost to Roger Lindamood in the second round. A first-round loss to Roger Woford's 8.37/175.43 to Lew's 8.51/166.66 came at Connecticut on July 4. Lew upset Bill Lawton three straight at Connecticut on August 20 with runs of 8.77/169.49, an 8.55/171 over Lawton's close 8.57/167, and a final 8.51/171. On September 17 at Epping for an Funny Car meet, Lew lost to Dick Loehr's 7.93/179.30 track records in the first round.

He ran an 8.24/181.80 at Carlsbad on 2/25/68. - Ron Howard | Confirmed 7.72 at Cecil County. | Lew started the season by running at the Irwindale New Year's Day race. Thirty-three cars showed for the sixteen available spots, and Lew's 8.44 qualified eleventh. In the first round, an 8.40/175.78 lost to Jim Liberman's 8.18/180. Lew qualified second with a 7.99 at the Funny Car Spectacular at Lions on February 24. He beat Jim Liberman's 8.39/177 in the first round, with a 7.95/183.66. In the second round, he ran an off pace 8.64/174.75 that lost to Gas Ronda's troubled, but even slower, 8.75/144. The following day (February 25) found Lew at Carlsbad for the South Coast Funny Car Championships. A first-round 8.00/184.82 (Top Speed) beat Fred Goeske. A second-round 8.24/181.80 beat Gene Conway, but in the semifinals, Liberman's 7.86/180 beat his 8.20/182.18. On March 3, he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show where 30 cars attempted to qualify. He qualified #14 with an 8.36/173.74. He beat Clare Sanders in the "Limefire" Barracuda in the first round, with a 7.97/186.32 (Top Speed). In the second round, he lost a close one to Don Nicholson's 8.00/169 to his 8.03/183.68. He was at Pittsburgh for its Funny Car Championships on May 4, but he lost to Eddie Schartman in the first round. Lew set a 7.77 track record at Aquasco on May 5 during the running of the Funny Car Invitational. Unfortunately, he was caught napping by Dick Bourgeois, who beat him with an 8.31/178 while "Brutus" played catch up, setting that record while running 181.44. Arrington had a best-of-three-match race against Hayden Proffitt in the "Grand Rebel SST" at Norwood's 1/8 mile track on May 10. Proffitt won the first race when Lew got crossed up and slowed to 6.62, but he came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 5.62/136. On May 26, Arrington was in New Orleans for a best of three match against Sid Foster. Sid's Mustang was having severe handling problems and could not get down the track straight, but he still managed to win their first race when Lou fouled. Arrington easily won the last two races for the match race victory with runs of 8.14/180.36 and 8.24/178.21.

Fiberglass Trends 68 body with a 69 upgrade. 1958 392 Chrysler Hemi. - Dennis Doubleday | Won NE Dragway Funny Car Nats in 69 at 7.32/200.00. |Arrington started his '69 season by qualifying with a 7.98 at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. But by qualifying ninth, he had to face low qualifier Don Schumacher in the first round. Don laid down a 7.59/195 to trailer Lew's 8.06/195.56. At the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9, Lew qualified eighth with a 7.75/189.46. That alone was impressive since 35 cars were going for the eight spots available. He failed to make it to the finals. Lew beat the super-tough Tom Grove at Aquasco on March 30. It was a best of three match, and in the first race, Arrington got out of shape and lost to the Mustang with a 9.01 at a flying 184.42. Grove sawed an engine in half in the second race, and Lew won with an 8.35/185.18. He soloed for the match race win when Tom couldn't return for the third race. On May 25, he had a match race against Charlie Allen at Connecticut. In the first race, Allen's 7.67/184 beat his 8.19/182.18. In the second race, Arrington's 7.99/188.92 beat Allen's 8.30/164, and the last race saw Charlie win the match with a 7.73/188 beating Brutus at 8.30/187.88. On May 30, Lew was at Budds Creek for its Memorial Day Funny Car Championships. It was a six-car field, but it had some excellent cars in the show. Lew beat the "Frantic Ford" in the first round, with an 8.00/187.10. In the semifinals, his 8.01/183.66 beat Allen's 8.14/163. In the final, he ran Bruce Larson's USA-1 Camaro. Larson had earlier set a new track record 7.33, so things weren't looking too good for "Brutus." Sure enough, in the final, Lew had problems and shut off to a 9.16/157.89 while Larson got the victory with a 7.84/187. New England held its Funny Car Championships on June 8, and Lew set a track record 7.54/196.92 in the first round. He got out-of-shape in the second round and lost to Paul Stefansky's 7.85/172. Also, in June at New York National for an eight-car show, Lew set a 199.54 track record while beating Ron Rivero (7.80/180) in the first round. In the semifinal, a 7.68/196.50 beat Frank Oglesby's 7.78/188, but in the final, he lost to Tony Wahlay. Lew competed at the President's Gold Cup Championships at Aquasco on June 22, winning his first-round race with an 8.07/187.88 over Tom McEwen's tire-smoking 8.71/152. In the semifinal, Jim Liberman's 7.74/190 was too much for Lew's 7.86/189.46. Malcolm Durham was paired up against him at a match race at Budds Creek, Maryland, on June 28, and although Malcolm won the first race, Lew won the next two when Durham broke and couldn't repair. On July 3, Arrington went to Edgewater for an eight-car show, and a 7.90 in the first round, beat an out-of-shape Dick Harrell. In the semis, Pat Minick's 7.47/191 sent Brutus to the trailer. The next day (July 4), he went to Suffolk for another eight-car show. There he ran a first-round 7.67/191.08 over Pat Minick's ailing 10.33 and a semifinal (Low ET) 7.55/193.54 beat Liberman's 7.62/191. But in the final, Dean LaPole, driving Larry Christopherson's Nova, beat him with a 7.97/193. Atco held its fourth annual Funny Car Championships on July 9, and a first-round 7.48 track record by Ed Schartman beat Arrington's 7.81. Durham's 7.59/195 beat Lew's 7.73/194.38 in the first round, on July 16 at Capitol's King of Kings Funny Car race, but Malcolm blew his engine, and with the break rule in effect, Brutus got back in for round two, where his 7.60/198.66 (Top Speed) beat Tom McEwen's 7.91/184. Unfortunately, Arrington fouled against Dick Harrell in the semifinal. He got himself a big win on July 20 at the Cars Magazine meet. He ran a best of 7.50/193.96 before beating Clare Sanders' 7.77 in the final with a 7.55. Lew lost early at the PHR Championships on August 2 when Minick set Low ET with a 7.33/201 over Lew's 7.48/196.93 in the first round. Lew ran at the AHRA Nationals on August 17 in New York but failed to get to the late rounds. He raced at Suffolk on September 7 and won his first race with a 7.56/191.08 over Ron Rivero's 7.60. In the second round, an 8.06/129 won when Henry Garcia lost a trans. In his third race, he fouled away Low ET at 7.45/196.50. He then went to Connecticut the following day (September 8) for a 14 car show. A first-round 7.63/193.12 beat Phil Castronovo's 8.33/162. He soloed in the second round with a 7.62/192.30 when Durham lost fire and a Low ET 7.56/191.08 beat Clare Sanders' 7.77/189.46, putting Lew in the final against Rivero. In the final, a 7.72/188.28 beat Ron's 7.93/181 for the title. He faced Liberman at Maple Grove for a best two-out-of-three Match race on September 13 and beat Jim two straight with runs of 7.61/188.66 and 7.53/191.48 over JJ's best of 7.67/186.32. On September 21 at New England's third annual Funny Car Championships, Lew beat Bill Lawton with a 7.32/195, to Lawton's close 7.32/200, followed by a 7.38/199.50 over Paul Stefansky's 7.88/181. In the final, he beat Liberman again with a 7.44/199.50 to JJ's off pace 8.70. He failed to make it into the final on November 2 at the Sears Point North/South Championships, but he did run a 7.89/194.60 over Kelly Chadwick in one of his races. On November 7 at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet, he qualified second with a 7.55 on the Wacky Funny Car team (cars that had motors that were not manufactured by the same manufacturer as the body). He won two of his three races running 7.61/196.93 over Mike Burkhart's 7.99/197 and 7.57/196.93 (again) over alternate Pete Bagnard. He lost to Gene Snow's 7.29/208 in the third round when he smoked the tires and slowed to an 8.09. Lew set both ends of Maple Grove track records at 7.39/196. - Ron Howard

The early 392 Hemi used Ansen pistons and rods, an Engle cam, and heads by Mondello. Even though the car was now in its third year of competition, he was still able to set track records with it. | Arrington started the season at Fremont's New Year's Day race. It was a six car show. In his first race he ran 7.62/187.50, but he lost to Pat Minick's 7.48/194 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In his second race, a 7.55/184.04 beat Jim Liberman's 7.83/189. Lew got another win in his third race with a 7.60/190.66 when Kip Brundage got crossed up and shut off in the "Parts Mart" Camaro. Lew qualified thirteenth with a 7.71 at the NHRA Winternationals. He lost to Gene Snow in round one. On February 15 at the Northern Nationals at Fremont, he lost a close first-round race to his friend Liberman. Jim's 7.57/195.22 beat Lew's 7.58/189.46. Another first-round loss came at the Super Stock Nationals showing the once potent car was getting a little old. Up in Toronto, Canada, in May for a Funny Car meet in Cayuga saw Arrington win his first-round race with a 7.95/180.36 over Larry Arnold. He failed to make it into the finals, but on May 31 he did at Connecticut running a 7.48/190.27, a 7.44/190.27 again, and a 7.49/189.07 in the semis before losing in the final to Phil Castronovo's 7.36/200.00 with an off pace 9.04/105. Still at Connecticut on July 5, Lew's first-round 7.51/188.28 beat Al Graeber, but Paul Stefansky's holeshot 7.66/196.07 beat his quicker 7.59/185.95. Arrington got back in on the break rule, but his 8.14/169.49 in the semis was no match for Jim Liberman's 7.42/189. Old car or not, on July 12 at Suffolk, Lew claimed a victory running 7.59/189.86, 7.53/190.66, and a 7.52 at 190.66 again in the semis before beating Bryan Teal in the final. There was a lot of strong competition with Don Schumacher, Jim Liberman, Charlie Allen, Phil Castronovo, and Malcolm Durham in the eight-car field. At Budds Creek, Maryland, Lew beat Liberman with a 7.68 in round one, before losing to a Larry Reyes holeshot in round two with Lew's 7.55/193 unable to catch Reyes' 7.58/195. At Epping on August 9, he beat Bruce Larson two straight with a 7.57/191 best and he stayed at Epping to race Tommy Grove the next day. Even though he ran strong 7.54/196.06 and 7.58/186.32 times he lost to Grove's 7.25/196 and 7.22/201. At the fourth annual New England Funny Car Nationals on September 20, Lew ran a first-round 7.47/196 over Pete Hill, but in the next round Dick Bourgeois' 7.31 dropped him. | Best NHRA times were 7.612/195.22.

Notes: Lew got a new car after running the same Firebird in '68, '69, and '70. He also changed engines from the early 392 Hemi to the newer 426 style Hemi. He must have taken a liking to the new Mustang as not only did the sleek body cloak his chassis, but he also went through the added effort of welding up a pair of valve covers to look like he was running a Boss 429 Ford engine. In April, Lew faced Jim Liberman in a best-of-three match race at Connecticut. Liberman won the first race with a 7.19/197 over Lew's 7.32/195.65. In the second race, Liberman went into a wheelstand and shut off, giving "Brutus" the win at 7.17/196.50. Jim could not run in the final race due to a blown transmission, so Arrington soloed for the match race win. He set a 7.02 track record at 203.61 on the final pass. Lew was at the Super Stock Nationals on May 9 at York US 30, but a first-round 7.35/208.33 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.88/199. He was runner-up to Jake Johnston at Atco for the CARS Magazine Meet. Also, 6.77 at New England Dragway on October 11, 1971. He crossed the country to race at Fremont in late October 1971 (6.75). Lew's best 1971 times are courtesy of Dennis Doubleday.

Notes: The famed "Nitro Molecule" paint job is shown. The paint faded as the year went along to a peach color. Early in the season, the "Brutus" Mustang suffered a lot of breakage. The car was going through rear ends, transmissions, and engines. But he got it together at Englishtown in July for its FC Spectacular. It was an eight-car show, and he won it with times of 6.78/213.27, 6.63/214.28, and 6.83/211.76 in the final to beat Roy Harris' 6.91/204.54 in the "Frantic Ford." Lew was at Englishtown for a Funny Car show in August, where he lost to eventual winner Larry Fullerton's 6.69/216 in the first round, with a 6.84/210.76. Lew faced his former driver, "Jungle Jim" Liberman, at Maple Grove for a best of three match in September. Arrington won the match two straight with times of 6.79 and 6.88/208.80. Best 1972 times are thanks to Dennis Doubleday.

Notes: Also 6.50s at 220 at Epping Funny Car Nationals in 1973 (but he burned it up in the final and had to borrow Ken Riehle’s Hell Fire rear-engine car to complete dates). | Best 1973 times thanks to Dennis Doubleday. Based in Concordville, PA, car lost in fire at NED October 73. | Arrington was at Connecticut in June for a twelve car show. He reached the finals by running 6.92/202 over an out of shape Sam Miller and in the second round beat Jimmy King with a 7.08/203.61. He faced his old driver, “Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final where his 7.00/205.01 finished runner-up to Liberman's 6.59/213. Lew was at Englishtown on July 4th for an eight-car show. He ran 6.88/218.44 over Tom Prock and 6.68/218.97 in the semifinals over Pat Foster's quicker 6.67/223 in Barry Setzer's Vega. This set up a final round meeting with Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" car. Lew ran an easy 7.14/216.34 to get the victory when Clare had a blower pulley break. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Summernationals. He was at Maple Grove on July 25 for the All-American Funny Car race. A first-round 6.80/221.76 beat Wayne Oxner, but he lost in the second round. Arrington ran well at the Super Stock Magazine Championships. He had run times of 6.73 and 6.74 on his way to a final round meeting with Prock. There his 6.91/210 finished runner-up to Tom's 6.71/218. Another runner-up finish came at Cecil County's Maryland State Funny Car Championships. Lew beat Joe Jacono in the opening round with a 6.69/213.77 and a semifinal 6.79/212.76 trailered "Jungle Jim's" 6.91. Once again, he faced Prock in the final and again the results were the same. His 6.65/214.79 finished second to Prock's 6.63/217. His runner-up finishes continued at Connecticut's East Coast Mini-Nationals. A first-round 6.84/211.26 beat Tom Crevasse in the "Fireball Vega" and a semifinal 6.79/209.30 took out Pee Wee Wallace's 6.86/212. This time he faced Jimmy King in the final and after doing his burnout, the reverser failed, giving King a solo for the money. It was another final round showing at his next stop, an eight-car show at Atco. Lew ran 6.94/216.31 over Wallace and 6.88/217.91 over Dick Bourgeois to reach the final. There he raced Crevasse. Arrington staged his car and the 'tree activated before Tom had even staged the "Fireball Vega." Lew made an on and off the throttle run while Tom was still at the line wondering what had happened. They agreed to split the purse.
