Notes: TB is "Tom" Smallwood. Logghe Chassis, B&N Fiberglass 'Cuda, Al Bergler aluminum, Cerny paint with Kelly lettering. Virtual twin to the Super Cuda (Kingfish Blue, Super Cuda Red) as Bill Taylor, Pat Collins, etc fielded funny cars out of Memphis. Bill - let me check, but I think Larry Reyes and Larry Arnold drove this car.

Notes: Car built 1968. Two-piece body with a tilt front end. Ran as Camaro primarily in 1968, switched to Firebird front end in 1969. Lost car on Jersey Turnpike in October of 1969 when the trailer hitch broke. At the Connecticut Memorial Day Championships on June 1, Charlie Allen's 7.99/150 beat Joe's out of shape-10.87/158.75 in the first round. Joe raced at the New England Funny Car Championships at Epping on June 8. He beat Frank Federici's 7.89/182 in the first round, with a holeshot, 7.94/177. Roger Lindamood's 7.86 beat him in round two. Still, in June, he ran an eight-car show at New York National, but a first-round 8.86/164.53 lost to Dick Harrell's 7.72/174. On June 28, he faced off against Jim Liberman for a best two out of three match race at Great Meadows, NJ. Joe fouled away a 7.87/185.18 in the first round, to Jim's 8.19/179. Unfortunately, the Firebird broke and could not run anymore that day, giving Liberman the match race victory.

Notes: Jack qualified #12 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Not sure what he ran, but Bryan Raines qualified one spot behind him at 7.54. In the opening round, Jack's 7.65/189 upset Henry Harrison at 7.69/146. Unfortunately, the car broke against Carl Swanson in round two.

Notes: The team was back to running on a smaller budget and only ran at one NHRA event, Bandimere, with a DNQ 5.897/188.86. This was the team's last funny car campaign until the modern nostalgia era. They did continue to run as a fuel altered here and there.

Notes: On 8/16/21 Draglist LIVE, Tom Stephens shared: "I did not race the Corvette. That was another guy. Junior someone." (Robin Stambaugh then provided the name: Junior Rice). Rice was at Richmond in August for the fourth NHRA Division Two race. Only six cars showed for the eight-car field, and in the opening round of competition, Rice advanced easily when Les Cassidy failed to show. In the semifinal, his 7.59/188.81 lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 6.20/233. (Speed may have been 181.81. We need to validate. Notes: Dick had his new Camaro at OCIR for a best of three match raced against Fred Goeske in February. In their first race, Harrell fouled and slowed to a 9.13 loss. He came back to win the second race to even the match. But in the third race, he was slightly late off the line, and his 8.14/174.75 lost to Goeske's 8.17/171. He lost to Al Vanderwoulde in a match race at Kansas City on April 7. He went to OCIR on May 4 for the Funny Car Team Championships. He won his first-round race with an 8.17 but lost soon after and didn't reach the final. Vanderwoulde and Harrell had a rematch at Minneapolis a month later (May 12) that had Harrell come out on top. Both Al and Dick pulled wheelstands in their opening race, but Harrell won with a 9.37/170.13 to Vanderwoulde's 9.48. Harrell made two straight with his track record 8.01 at 184.04 over Al's 8.39/179. Dick set both ends of the track record at Detroit Dragway while winning the AHRA Grandnationals later in May. His final round 7.84/184.04 beat Dick Loehr's 8.16/160. He ended the month at Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show. In the opening round, his 7.99/178.92 beat Don Biggers. His 8.02/170.13 defeated Ron Leslie in the "High Country Cougar in the semifinal." He faced Larry Reyes, driving the "Super 'Cuda" in the final. The two had a great race, but Larry's 7.93/177 got the victory over Harrell's 8.03/182.54 (Top Speed) runner-up effort. Shortly after that (June 2), he was at Gary, Indiana's US 30, for a six-car show. All the cars were to make three runs. His 8.25/178 beat Ron O'Donnell's 8.25/173 in the "Mr. Norm" Charger in his first race. He ran his best time of the day, a 7.91/180, in winning his second-round match against Arnie Beswick. His only loss came in the third race, where Dick's 8.20/173 lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 7.76/180. Harrell ran 7.79/184.04 at Bristol, but on July 10 at Atco, he set both ends of the track record with 7.68/188.68. Also ran 7.68 at Detroit. Flip-top Camaro. Photo at New York International Speedway.

Notes: Their second Cougar flopper? | Leslie qualified #15 with an 8.32-Their second Cougar flopper? | Leslie qualified #15 with an 8.32/170.13 at Pomona on February 2 for the NHRA Winternationals. That alone was pretty good since there were 40 cars going for the sixteen spots. A first-round 8.17 beat Pat Foster in Mickey Thompson's Mustang, but in round two, he lost an engine while running Clare Sanders (7.88). At the second annual Manufacturer's Open at OCIR on May 3, Ron qualified #3 on the four-car Ford team with an 8.95/189.06. He won his first race with an 8.52 over Dean Hofhein's Charger. Steve Bovan's 7.89/184 beat his 8.28/182.92 in his second race and in the third race, the Cougar was shut off on the line for a fuel leak. On May 17, the team raced at Irwindale for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.87/187.88 wasn't enough to get around Johnny Wright's 7.75/193 in the Hellfire. Leslie beat Ed Lenarth and Gas Ronda in the first two rounds at Irwindale on May 30 for another eight-car show. In the final, he met Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian who was on a tear and lost. The following day, May 31, they went to OCIR for the Funny Car 500. A 7.95/188.67 qualified the team #8 in the sixteen-car show. Leslie advanced past the first-round when Lenarth fouled. But they had mechanical issues and were unable to run the second round. Way up in Canada on June 15 in Winnipeg, Ron lost a best of three match race against John Dekker. The two had a rematch on June 29 in Denver at Thunder Road Dragway. This time, Leslie won three straight with an 8.31 best. At the Rocky Mountain Funny Car Championships at Continental Divide on July 20, a first-round 8.59/161.78 beat Gary Gitthens in the first round, but a blown transmission ended their day in the second round. On July 26, at Dallas for an eight-car show, a first-round 7.84/186.72 lost to Mike Burkhart's 7.80/185. The two met again the next day (July 27) at Corpus Christi for a best of three match race. Ron won the first race with a 7.99/181.45, but on the burnout for the second race, something in the Cougar broke so Mike took a solo to even the match. Whatever had broken was bad enough that the Cougar was unable to run in the final race and give Burkhart the win by default. Back at home for a match race against John Dekker on August 4 at Denver, Leslie beat Dekker in all three races with all of his runs bettering the old track record. In the first race, an 8.00/182.54 beat John's 8.11/178. The second race had Ron run an 8.02/184.04 over John's 8.10/176. In the final race, Leslie ran the first seven in an Funny Car at Denver with a 7.98 setting the new track mark, beating Dekker's close 8.01. On October 18, Irwindale held its East/West Championships. Ron ran a first-round 7.84/185.18 over Don Schumacher's ailing Cuda. He advanced past the second round when Terry Hedrick shut off on the line. In the semifinal, a tire-smoking 8.11/181.90 lost to Pat Minick's 7.48/198. At OCIR on November 7 in qualifying for the Manufacturer's Meet, Ron couldn't run better than an 8.68 for the fifth spot on the Ford team. After the rain-out, they returned on November 16. Rich Siroonian's 7.53/196 beat Leslie's 8.18/184.82 in the first round. The car was offered for sale in late November in Drag News. The car came with a share '68 Cougar body and a fully enclosed 28' trailer for $5,500 without engine or transmission. at Pomona on February 2 for the NHRA Winternationals. Notes: LaPlace held a four-car match race early in June. The "Candies and Hughes" car was one of the cars running. In the first round, Hughes lost to Kelly Chadwick when he fouled away an 8.06 at a track record 185.94. In his second race, Hughes reset both ends of the track record with a run of 7.82/188.66 over Della Woods' new Charger. In the third race, Hughes ran 8.16/184.42 to beat Tom Smallwood's 8.24/179 in the "Kingfish."In November, Hughes was back at LaPlace for a best of three match race against Larry Arnold, driving the "Super 'Cuda." Leonard's 8.31/175.09 lost to the similar 8.3/178 of Arnold in their first race. But Hughes continued to get quicker in the next two races while Arnold got slower. In the second race, Leonard's 8.23/181.44 tied up the match over Larry's 8.43/164, and Hughes sewed it up in the third race with an 8.10/185.56 that beat the "Super 'Cuda's" 8.49/168. Is this the same as the "Jake's Speed Equipment" Barracuda?

Notes: "All American Boy" Charlie Allen's best remembered funny car was this 1968 Dodge Dart. This was his first flip-top funny car, replacing his A/FX Dart. The new machine marked his first flip-top, one-piece unit. It was a test in part for Crower products. The car ran OK, registering high 7s. Allen built the car with a Contemporary Fiberglass body with Kenny Ellis tin. Charlie raced the car under the blue & silver Atlantic Dodge and Crenshaw Dodge banners in 1968. Allen collected a $2000 win at Irwindale at the 16-car experimental Stock Invitationals. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from James Ibusuki). | Charlie was driving the "Crenshaw" backed Dart at OCIR on July 20. All eight cars ran the first two rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Allen made sure he got into the final by setting Low ET in the first round, with a 7.60/184.80 that beat Dale Williams in Jess Tyree's Firebird. In his second race, he ran 8.04/188.28 to beat Dee Keaton's 8.34/177.51. In the final, he met up with Ray Alley. The two had a good race going until Allen's transmission failed to shift, and he shut off to 8.83/113.20 while Alley got the win with a strong 7.88/190. In Mid-August, he was at Mission Raceway in BC, where he set the track record down to 7.60. On a backup run, he ran 7.75. He set a 7.68 Irwindale track record in October. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed this car at 7.95. We need to confirm it was this one and not the new red Dart that went the 7.68. - BP

Notes: The car burned badly at OCIR. Mert was competing at OCIR's East-West Meet in early October. He left the line and the car went into a wheelstand. He got off the pedal and the car crashed down hard, throwing the body off the chassis. The chassis ended up doing a number of rolls before coming to a flaming stop. Luckily, Littlefield was OK.

Notes: Blown fuel, as seen here. Tube AWB chassis. Landy, who spent some time behind the wheel of Shirley Shahan's "Drag On Lady" Plymouth in 1966, started 1966 in his 1965 Dodge, sold it and built this Dart. Started with normal wheelbase, then AWB'd it. Late in 1966, he aded this blower. Sold car in 1967 to Gene Kidder, who crashed the car in 1968. (January 1970 Hot Rod)
