Notes: SOHC Ford, C-6 auto trans. Ran 7.35 at Detroit Dragway vs. Walt Knoch. Dyno Don's '68 Logghe car, trick Shedlik paint job. Also, Don was runner up to Paul Stage's AA/C in Super Eliminator (pre-Funny Car Eliminator) at '68 Indy Nationals. - Danny White | Nicholson's early-season '68 car was destroyed in late July in a collision on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Carlisle, according to the 7/26/68 edition of Drag Times. Crewmembers Jim Campbell and Wally English were returning Nicholson's car to Detroit following the Super Stock Nationals. The impact threw the Cougar over the cab and onto the roadway, demolishing it. English was killed in the collision; Campbell was injured but recovered. - RT | The Cougar debuted at a match race in May against Jim Liberman at Capitol. Don lost two transmissions and the match when Jim strapped a 7.66/187.88 on him in the first race and rain kept the next two rounds from being run."Dyno also didn't have too much luck when he showed up for the Cecil Fuel Showdown on May 18. During a time trial run, he broke a timing chain, and he was unable to run in eliminations."Dyno" showed the world that he was still one of the top dogs in Funny Car racing when he showed up at Milan, Michigan on July 7 for a match race against "Fast Eddie" Schartman. Nicholson won all three races. His times were 7.66/184.04 and 7.70/182.18 in the first two races. But he really showed 'em in the last race with his 7.48/185.86. The following week (July 13), he was at Capitol Raceway for its Supercharged Invitational race. In the first round, Malcolm Durham fouled against him at Don advanced with an 8.11/165.74. He lost to Lyle Fisher's 8.19/180 in round two with an ailing 8.36/116.88. But due to the "break rule," he got back into the show for the semifinal. Once again, he faced Fisher. Lyle failed to fire this time, so "Dyno" soloed at 11.66. He met Larry Reyes in the final, and the 'Cuda had him covered, running 7.54/192 for the win over Don's 8.05/181.80 runner-up effort. - Ron Howard |

Notes: "Fast Eddie" Schartman was one of the racers chosen to receive one of the Logghe-built Comet Cyclones from Ford Motor Company. Schartman had worked his way up the racing ranks before getting into funny car racing. In 1966, he was one of the top funny car racers with the advanced machines. In 1967, he was already on his third paint job when he received the Air Lift sponsorship. The Air Lift Rattler featured the updated Logghe chassis and kept on winning. With Amos Satterlee tuning, Schartman won the Manufacturer's Funny Car Championship at Orange County with runs of 8.17/184.08, 7.85/185.18 (Low ET), and 7.87/185.56. - BS | 427 SOHC, C-6 auto combo. | Ran 8.65/164 at AHRA Winters on January 29. Eddie first ran a blower late in the year at Fremont's Third Annual exhibition Car Championships in Oct. They ran 30% nitro and beat Ronnie Runyan and Pat Minick, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with an 8.20/179. He won the race beating Terry Hedrick's Corvair in the final with an 8.08 (Low ET). A week later, he was at Irwindale for the experimental Stock Invitational. Eddie won this race, too. He beat Doug Thorley and Roger Lindamood in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, his 7.97/181.08 beat Butch Leal's 8.28/150. Schartman faced Ron O'Donnell in the final, and he set Low ET with a 7.93 at 181.36 to win. He was at Lions in the first week of November for the East-West Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, he exploded a blower in the opening round and lost to Leal. He wasn't down and out for long as he then won the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. All cars ran three rounds of racing, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. An opening round 8.17/184.04 beat Leal's 8.22/176. His second round 7.85/185.18 won over Thorley, and a 7.87/185.56 in round three assured him a spot in the final. There he faced surprise finalist Roy Gay. - Ron Howard Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA 11/25/67 |

Notes: Chrisman started the year at Lions for the AHRA Funny Car meet on January 28. It didn't go too well. He qualified 31 with a 9.90/154.90 and lost a motor on the line in round one. He ran 8.40 to qualify 13th on February 24, again at Lions, and ran 8.09/180.00 to win his first-round race. An 8.11/176 failed to beat Fred Goeske in the second round. The following day at Carlsbad, he had injection problems and couldn't run, giving Dick Loehr a single. Chrisman was at Lions on March 30, where all fourteen cars made three runs. His 9.14/145.11 lost to Bob Pickett's 9.10/109 when both cars got out of shape in his first race. Motor trouble kept him from making a second run, and on the third, his ailing Comet lost to Johnny Wright's 8.41/160. After doing a stint with Hayden Proffitt's Rebel, Amos Satterlee came back as the chief mechanic. On April 7, Jack ran a best of 8.06/182.18 and finished runner-up to Fred Goeske at the Carlsbad Funny Car Championships. A first-round loss to Dick Harrell's 8.17 to Chrisman's 8.32 followed on May 4 at OCIR. An 8.02/151.50 qualified him second at Lions on May 18, but the pass cost him as a timing chain broke, and he bent some valves. As a result, he was unable to race. He was at Tulsa on June 9 for a best-of-three-match race against Don Gay. Jack lost the first race to the Pontiac, but he ran a strong 7.64 to win over Gay, who lost a motor in the second race. Gay could not return for the third race, so Jack soloed for the match race victory. At Irwindale on June 22, Jack lost to Dee Keaton in the second round. Jack was at Irwindale on August 17 for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. There were four of each that were to race round-robin. In his first race, he ran 8.13/179.28, but it wasn't strong enough to beat Gary Reed's 7.69/204 in the "Groundshaker."In the second race against Sush Matsubara, the Comet broke at 1/8 track and lost to Sush's 9.47/163. The car could not run the last race, and Willie Borsch filled in for him. A big win at Lions on October 12 followed with his 7.98/177.86 dropping Dale Pulde in the final. He almost pulled it off again on November 16 at Lions, where he qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 7.97/185.44. He then ran two 7.88's at 185.56 and 181.08 to beat Ronnie Runyon twice(Ronnie had gotten back into the show on the "break rule"). That got him into the final against Jim Liberman. Jack had to shut off on the line with a leaking transmission. He also raced at the OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. It was his last season running a Comet. |

Notes: Blown early hemi, B&M TorqueFlite combo. I saw this car race at Irwindale in 1968, so the Camaro was run for at least part of that year. The Vette came out in late 1968. - John Renner | Photo from 1968 Riverside Ca. | Norm's Blue Fox was a consistent runner in '68. He was at the Funny Car Spectacular at Lions on February 24. Out of 50 cars that showed to qualify for the sixteen-car field, he qualified #4 with an 8.10, but he could not run in the first round, and alternate Cecil Yother replaced him in the show. He was at Carlsbad the next day (February 25) for the South Coast Funny Car Championships, but he got out of shape against Gas Ronda in the first round, and lost. On March 3, the "Blue Fox" was one of 30 FC's trying to qualify for the sixteen-car show at Irwindale. Norm qualified #12 with an 8.33/176.81. A solid first-round 8.16/181.44 lost to Bob Sullivan's 8.15/185. He was runner-up to Fred Goeske at the Bakersfield March Meet. At the HRM Championships at Riverside on March 24, Norm lost to Ronda in the first round, (I believe the picture shows this first-round race). Lions held an Funny Car show on March 30, with all 14 cars making three runs. Norm won his first and second race with an 8.53/169.49 best, but he lost to Al Vanderwoude's 8.55/155 in his third race when he fouled away an 8.53/171.75. Norm was back at Carlsbad for their Funny Car Championships, but in the first round, his 8.35/181.08 lost to Jack Chrisman's 8.33/178. Cowdrey was running well at OCIR on April 13. He beat Ray Alley's 8. 58/178 in the first round, with an 8.23/187.10. In round two, an 8.15/166.97 beat Randy Walls' 8.65. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 9.91/135.73 when Charlie Allen lost fire. He was up against Goeske in the final, but the Camaro broke, giving Goeske a free ride for the win. He won over an eight-car field at Irwindale on April 28. An 8.44/180.36 in the first round, beat Allen, and a semifinal 8.18/174.74 beat Cecil Yother. He was up against Goeske again for the money, but Fred fouled, and Norm shut off for the victory. Norm found himself in the finals again at Lions on May 18 for an eight-car show. He qualified #6 with an 8.60, and in the first round, he beat Barry Lewis' Corvair. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinal with a 7.80/185.56 over Dale Williams in the "Tyree's Headers" Firebird. In the final, he met his nemesis, Ronda, in the "Russ Davis" Mustang. It was a close final, but Ronda's 8.03/175 beat Norm's 8.04/181.44. The two then faced off in a best of three match race the following week (May 25) at OCIR. Ronda beat the "Blue Fox" two straight for the match race victory. On June 1, he was back at OCIR for the Funny Car 500. He ran a best of 8.33 but failed to reach the finals. The "Blue Fox" Camaro reached its end at Irwindale on June 22. Norm beat a fouling Eddie Pauling in the "Whinemaker" in the first round, with an 8.05/183.28. But in round two, Jess Tyree fouled against him, and Cowdry was running through for the win. The car's engine let go, and the car caught fire. Norm was OK, but the car was badly burnt up. The driver who helped extract him from his car was none other than Ronda, who had just won his race the round before and was still suited up. |

Notes: Chrisman was one of the Funny Car pioneers. His '64 Comet was the first of its kind (Dodge Chargers aside). The car inspired the Funny Car class more than any other. He was constantly pushing the envelope, going faster and faster. He had stunned the drag racing world in '67 by running 7.60/191.08 at Indy. So it was sad to see this great driver run so poorly in '70. The car was always (and I mean always!) prone to breakage. His times were way off what they had been even two years earlier. Jack Chrisman had been the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars captain in '69. He withdrew from the Coca-Cola tour for '70. On May 9th, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.19/173.41 lost to eventual winner Wendell Shipman who was driving John Mazmanian's car. Jack was at Lions on June 27 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he broke on the line against Dave Beebe in the first round. He also broke on the line in the first round at the OCIR Nitro Championships held on July 3. Eventual winner Arnie Behling advanced when the Mustang broke. The following day he was at Irwindale's Fourth of July race. Chrisman qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 7.88, but once again, the car came up ailing in the first round, and he lost to Dean LaPole's 8.50. He went to Lions on July 11 for the AHRA All-American race. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field, but there were so many FCs on hand that they created a second eight to run against each other. In the first round of this "second eight," Jack's 8.19/145.16 beat Bob McFarland's quicker 8.11/176. But in the semifinals, breakage persisted, and he slowed to 11.79/72.23 in a loss to Eldridge's 8.38/133. The following week (July 17), he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #13 with an 8.75, and his ailing 8.59 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Dave Beebe's 8.02. Jack was back at OCIR on July 25 for the PDA Championships. This was another sixteen-car show, and his 8.19/170.13 advanced when his opponent, Vic Morse, broke. But it was the same old story in round two when the Mustang broke against Dave Condit. Jack raced at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships held on August 1st. In the first round, Chrisman's ailing 8.69/118.42 lost to Dick Poll's 8.26/180. Jack was at Lions on August 22 for an "open" eight-car show. He failed to qualify, but he had a "grudge race" with another non-qualifier, Marv Eldridge. Jack won their race, with his 7.54/185.56 being one of his better runs of the year. Eldridge lost with a 7.70/168. The Fremont Argus Newspaper in June 1970 noted that Jack's car had an overhead cam Ford. |

Notes: Running 100% Alky. - Danny White | This built-in-late '66 funny car wars survivor was getting a little long-in-the-tooth by the time the Class of '69 rolled in. - RT | Bovan started the '69 season on a sour note when he failed to qualify at the Irwindale New Year's Day Championships. Steve ran an 8.15 in a failed attempt to qualify on February 9 at the second OCIR All-Pro race. The following week (February 16) he lost to Danny Ongais in the first round, at the Stardust Open at Las Vegas. Another first-round loss followed, this time to Jim Liberman at an eight-car show at Lions on February 22 where Jim's 7.72/184 beat Bovan's 8.30/172.41. On March 16, an 8.10 qualified #12 at the HRM Championships. He ran an 8.12/185.18 in the first round, to advance when Don Schumacher lost fire. Mike Van Sant's 8.04/187 beat his 8.06/179.64 in the second round. He ran well at an eight-car show at Lions on March 22 with a 7.82 qualifying #3. An 8.14/172.08 beat Leroy Hales' 9.35/129 in the New Breed, but he hurt the bottom end of his Chevy motor forcing him to withdraw from competition and reinstating Hales. On April 19, Lions held an eight-car show. Steve qualified #5 with a 7.71, but in the first round, while staging, he had a valve cover leaking oil onto the headers. The car caught fire, but it was quickly extinguished. He raced at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on April 26, running a first-round 7.88/180 over Ed Carter in the first round. But in round two both he and Ed Lenarth had problems and Ed's 8.26/177 beat Bovan's 8.93/175.09. By May 3, the Camaro was running a Hemi. |

Notes: Ran 6.87 at Seattle. Formerly listed 6.26/236, but that seems very quick and fast (in fact, the highest speed this year). If the numbers were run, they probably occurred in a later year. Removing them until we get confirmation. Ran 6.85/185.18 at OCIR late in 1974. |

Notes: Harry Schmidt and Mike Burkhart had run a Nova in '66, but for '67 they teamed up on this Camaro that they built in just three weeks. The cost was kept down to just $2,700 as they had a lot of parts on hand. The body came from Fiberglass Ltd. and sat on a 120" chassis. An injected 427 Chevy powered the car that used M/T rods and 12:1 Venolia pistons. A roller cam from Crower was installed. Heads were done by Mondello. The 90% nitro was fed to the engine by Hilborn injection. The rest of the drivetrain was from Mopar, from the push-button TorqueFlite transmission back to the Plymouth rear end with 3.90 gears. Total weight was only 1,750 lbs. The car debuted at the AHRA Winternationals where Mike ran a best of 9.50 on 50% nitro. |

Notes: In mid-September, Jones was at Richmond for a best of three match against Roger Lindamood. He lost the first race to the "Color Me Gone" Charger, but he won the second with an 8.50/185 when the Dodge broke a transmission. Lindamood fixed the car and returned to sew up the match by beating him in the final. |

Notes: Jimmy was at Atco Dragway in May for the CARS Magazine Meet. It was an eight-car show, and he blew the engine in the first round against Al Segrini. In September, King lost in the first round at the New England Funny Car Nationals. His off-pace 7.38/185 lost to Dick Custy's even slower 7.42/151. Jimmy blew the Satellite body off in midseason 1976 and finished the year with a new Monza shell. |

Notes: Roy Gay entered the new car into competition for the first time at the OCIR Manufacturers' Meet held in November. In the first round, he beat Gas Ronda with a 7.96/184.04. He reached the final as the two Low ET cars would meet for a final run-off. This was pretty good, considering the caliber of competition. There were 45 cars there, and all the "name" drivers were there. This Pontiac-powered car getting into the final was huge. But a 8.10/175.09 in the final lost to Eddie Schartman's 7.86/184 in his newly-blown Comet. He ran it at Beeline Dragway for the Western US Super Stock Championships in early December. It was a sixteen-car field, and he advanced in the opening round when Charlie Allen had his steering fail. In round two, he lost to eventual winner, "Dyno Don" Nicholson. Dick Harrell Chevrolet. We formerly listed 7.90/184.04 and 182.92 at the OCIR Mfg. Meet. We need to confirm the 7.90 and 184.80 speed. |

Notes: Al Vanderwoude did not follow the status quo when it came to drag racing. The beautiful "Flying Dutchman" '66 Dart was as normal a car as Vanderwoude ever raced. The Vanderwoudes were regular racers in the early California funny car wars, but the Ted Brown built Dart was Al's first competitive rig. The car served as a rolling catalog for Mickey Thompson parts - everything Mickey Thompson offered was on the car. The Dart sported one of those Scott Slots, an injector sold only by Mickey Thompson. Of note is that "Scott" quit making these units in 1964 or so, venturing into the world of weapons development. There was more money in missiles and bombs than in racing. Vanderwoude beat a few of the heavy hitters in match races and did OK at some of the bigger open shows. A 1957 392 Chrysler Hemi punched out to 422 cubic inches powered the car. Although not a big winner Al was popular with race fans. He ran 8.04 at 184 in the Dart in 1967. The was often a handful - Vanderwoude had severe handling problems at the Super Stock Nationals at Cecil County, MD, and at the Texas vs. California match race at Amarillo, TX. After barely a year of competition, the Dart was replaced by a new '68 Charger. Ran 9.11/168.85 at OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67. (Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from Bill Duke, and James Ibusuki) | Al failed to qualify at Irwindale's New Year's Funny Car race, but he ran well enough to just make the show (#8) at Fontana on Jan 7. That was good considering that 42 cars attempted to qualify for the eight spots. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Don Nicholson. He made it into for final of the 2400 lb Funny Car class at Bakersfield, but once again the car got out of shape and Doug Cook took the win. He was at Irwindale on March 5 for a 10 car show, but a first-round 9.02/159.28 lost to eventual winner Charlie Allen's 8.72/162. Al faced off against Roger Wolford in the "Secret Weapon" Jeep for a best two out of three match race at Tucson on April 8. He won the first race with a 9.4 run when Roger failed to stage the Jeep properly.
