Notes: Car was campaigned throughout the 1970 season. Team burned the body off at Rockford, IL, and replaced the body with a Camaro to finish the season. Solano & Van Sant Invader Cuda was a different car. | This car came to an end, as mentioned, at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. All cars at the meet were to make three runs with the two quickest cars meeting in the final. Gary had been running strong as in the first race he fouled against Don Schumacher's 7.73, but the Corvette still ran 7.53. In the second race, he lost to Sidney Foster's holeshot aided 7.57 with a 7.49. The third race was the unfortunate one. Gary ran a 7.28 to beat a fouling Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler", but in the lights something blew as the car turned into an instant inferno. Scow got the car stopped and every fire extinguisher in the area was used up battling the blaze. The "Invader's" Corvette body was destroyed, but the chassis was salvageable. Gary was OK and his run ended the race as no more runs could be made as there was no fire equipment left at the track! |

Notes: In the Fall of 1971, photojournalist Jon Asher made initial runs at Orange County International Raceway in an attempt to obtain his NHRA fuel funny car license. At OCIR, he made a couple of half-track shots and a pair of timed runs an 8.71/175.78 and an 8.09/183.29. More runs would need to be made, and plans for attempts in California in early 1972 were tentatively set. The California runs never materialized, and it was decided to make the passes in March at Gainesville Raceway after the completion of the Gatornationals. Jon made three runs at Gainesville, an abbreviated run where Jon's fire boot got caught under the throttle pedal, a good straight as a string pass of 7.47/192.70, and an engine exploding, on fire pass of 8.92/82.94. Fuel funny car drivers Gary Henderson (Super Duster) and Cecil Lankford (Brand-X), along with track manager Terry Earwood signed for Jon's license. Jon also agreed that before he made any runs in competition, he would make some additional passes to get within the NHRA required National Record plus ten percent rule, which required a new licensee to make a full pass within ten percent of the current National Record. Two different articles about Jon's experiences were published in Super Stock & Drag Illustrated, "Update: Driving A Funny Car" March 1972 and "It's On Fire" July 1972. |

Notes: Don was still running his '67 car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Since NHRA had no Funny Car class, he had to run in Super Eliminator. Of the Funny Cars that showed up and qualified for the class, Gay did the best. He beat the Joe Davis AA/Altered in the opening round with an 8.18/181.80 and in round two, Sush Matsubara failed to fire, so an 8.37/161.57 advanced. In the semifinals, his 8.35/182.18 was stopped by Richard Galli's A/FD. |

Notes: At the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline, Hammons qualified with an 8.79 but lost early. He lost in the first round to Fred Goeske at the Lions Funny Car Spectacular on February 24 after qualifying #14 in the sixteen-car show with an 8.40. The following day he was at Carlsbad for the South Coast Funny Car Championships, where an 8.58/165.44 in the first round, lost to Clare Sanders' 8.31/173 in the "Limefire." Rich was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on March 3. Thirty Funny Caattempteding to qualify, and Hammons' 8.41/167.91 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, he fouled away an 8.62 against Ronnie Runyan in the "Blue Hell" Corvair. OCIR held a fuel altered vs. Funny Car race on June 22. There were four of each competing. Hammonds ran a career-best (to this point) 8.06 at 181.08 to beat Glenn Way's 8.83/181 in the "Groundshakers." The hood flew off the car in his second race, but he still won over Sush Matsubara, who lost a blower. He had to race another Funny Car in the third race due to all the breakage. He raced Kip Brundage in the "Parts Mart" car. A 8.28/183.27 defeated Kip's 8.53/179. Rich was at OCIR on July 20, where his 8.35/179.28 lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.15/180. |

Notes: Also ran 7.84 at '69 AHRA Grand American in St. Louis and 7.85 Green Valley. | Runyan started the '69 season not how he would have liked. He failed to qualify at Irwindale's New Year's Day Championships. Ron qualified #11 with an 8.06 at the HRM Championships at Riverside on March 16. He fouled against Charlie Allen in the first round. A 7.94 qualified him #4 at an eight-car show at Lions on March 22. That alone was impressive since Tom McEwen, Jack Chrisman, Dale Pulde, Ray Alley, Dick Loehr among others failed to qualify. Runyan won his first race with an all over the track, 9.69/135 over Ed Lenarth's out of shape 10.81. Unfortunately, Ron was disqualified for the pass and Lenarth returned to race in the semifinal. He attempted to qualify for an eight-car show at Lions on April 19, but he ended up as first alternate with a 7.78 best. On April 26, Runyan ran a 7.84 in qualifying at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. An off pace 8.37/166.05 lost to Clyde Morgan's 7.93/178 in the first round. Ron ran as an alternate on May 3 at the second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open at OCIR. He lost to Randy Walls' 8.05/181 in his first race when he fouled away an 8.36/180.72. He also lost to Larry Fullerton in his second race. He did much better on May 10 at Lions for an eight-car show where he qualified #3 with a 7.99 and lost to Lenarth in the first round, but Ed broke letting Runyan back into the field on the break rule. He made it into the final where his 8.34/157.61 lost to Fullerton's 7.80/187. He raced at the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol on June 8, beating Jerry Caminito in the first round, with an 8.01. He fouled against Leonard Hughes in the second round. On August 10, he qualified second with a 7.84 at the AHRA Grand American race at St. Louis. He beat Joe Allen in the first round, with a 7.92 and in the semifinal, Mike Burkhart fouled against him and Runyan eased to the final with a 9.94. In the final, he shut off when Bob Manion pulled a big holeshot on him and won with a 7.81/192. Ron coasted to a 9.70-77.12 runner-up effort. He fouled in the first round, at both the AHRA World Championships at Green Valley on August 24 and the AHRA All-American at Bristol on September. 7. Another first-round loss came at Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals, there Connie Kalitta's 7.95 beat him. |

Notes: Al was at Maple Grove on April 12 as a backup car for a best of three match race between Bill Flynn and Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." Hanna blew his engine in the first race and was unable to continue. Phillips filled in. In the next race, Flynn won with an 8.00/185 over Earl's 8.07/174.43. In the final race, the "Baltimore Bandit's" 8.33/173.41 lost to the "Yankee Peddler's" 7.71/186. Earl won the NHRA Funny Car circuit race held at Cayuga, Ontario, on July 5. A first-round 8.17/175 advanced when Huston Platt blew his engine on the line. He actually lost to Bill Flynn in the semifinal, but Flynn broke on the line in the final, and Earl was there to take his place. He faced Mel Perry, and Phillips ran 7.92/183 for the victory over Mel's 8.20/178. Mike Gagnon information. |

Notes: Frank was at OCIR on May 18 for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. All cars were to run three races. In his first race, he was up against Willie Borsch. Pisano got a great jump on the lights and held it to win with his first "seven," a 7.93/182.92 that beat Willie's quicker and faster 7.85/189. In his second race, he got another holeshot win when Gary Reed's late 8.09/193 lost to Frank's 8.25/177.86. In his third race, an 8.29/171.00 beat Leon Fitzgerald's troubled 9.32/117. There were two Pisano Bros. Corvairs, one with doors and one without doors. |

Notes: At an eight-car show at Irwindale on May 17, Mike Van Sant's 7.71/190 beat Bob Smith's 7.92/181.44 in the first round. At OCIR for the Funny Car 500 on May 31, he qualified ninth with a 7.99/181.08, but lost in the first round. For the AHRA Grand American Championships at Lions, Bob failed to hear the call for the first-round and was eliminated. On June 28 at Lions, Bob qualified fifth with a 7.94 and went on to win the event with a 7.61/182.55 in Tom Sturm's Corvair over Gary Gabelich 7.87/177 in the Beach City Corvette. On July 5 at OCIR's Nitro Championships, Bob qualified fourth in a sixteen-car field with a 7.77, but he lost in the first round. For some reason, Joe Fisher drove Sturm's car on July 19 at OCIR, but the following week on July 26, Smith qualified the Corvair third at Irwindale with a 7.74/182.64 and made it to the semis before falling to Mike Snively's Charger. A runner-up finish to Gordon Mineo came on August 2 at Lions with Bob running a best of 7.68. OCIR held their Anniversary Race on August 9, and Smith made it into the semis of the eight-car show before losing to Ed Lenarth's all-time best of 7.67/187 to his 8.02/157.89. At the Drag News Nationals at Lions on August 30, a sub-par 8.77/134.93 lost to Larry Fullerton in the first round. His first-round curse was back on September 1 at Irwindale, he qualified fourth with a 7.79 in the eight-car field, but he failed to fire against Warren Gunter. The following week (September 6), Bob qualified #1 with a 7.68 and a first-round 7.84/177.16 advanced to round two where Lenarth again stopped him this time with a 7.65/171.10 to Bob's off pace 8.80/110. On October 11, Bob showed up at OCIR in the Invader Corvette. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Fred Goeske came to fame as the second owner of the B&M Plymouth Dealers Barracuda in late 1966. Goeske raced the heavy stock rear-engine car until the end of 1967. Tom McEwen ran this car in 1965 and early 1966. February 17/1967 (National Dragster) says this car ran '8.50s in 1966', but confirmed 8.71 at Las Vegas (per 10/14/66 National Dragster). Notes: Nicholson ran his Comet for the early part of '68. He started the season with a win at Irwindale for the New Year's Day meet. He qualified second with an 8.04 and ran Low ET of the meet in the first round, when his 7.99/172.74 beat Dick Loehr's 8.18/180. An 8.04 and an 8.03 advanced Don into the finals where another 8.04 beat low qualifier Terry Hedrick. At Lions on January 28 for the AHRA Winter meet, Don qualified #1 with a Low ET of the meet 7.63 at 180.36. A first-round 7.65/175.56 advanced when Joe Pisano broke a transmission. Another 7.72/180.72 advanced Dyno Don into the third round where his 8.02/169.85 beat Ronnie Runyan. In the semis, both Nicholson and Dick Loehr had transmission problems, but Don won the coasting contest. He was to face Jim Liberman for the title, but even though Jim gave him extra time to fix his trans, Don was not ready. Gene Snow was brought to the line to face Liberman again (he had lost to Jim in the semifinal). The starter motioned Gene to fire up and just as he did, Nicholson's car came running out of the pits. There was quite a bit of yelling by officials, fans, and racers, but in the end, Snow ran and lost to Liberman's strong 7.84. It was just a bump in the road for Nicholson as at the next race, the second annual Stardust Open, he qualified #1 with a 7.94 and set Low ET at 7.83 while beating Ed Schartman in the final. He then took on Terry Hedrick driving the "Seaton's Shaker" Corvair at a match race at OCIR, winning the first two rounds with a best of 7.97/172.74 before smoking the tires and shutting down in the last race. On March 3 at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show, he qualified second with a 7.99/180.46. A first-round 8.09/149.49 beat Al Vanderwoude (8.45). A second round 8.00/169.49 just nipped Lew Arrington's 8.03 at a fast closing 183.68. A semifinal 7.88/182.54 over Ronnie Runyan came close to his 7.81 track record. He was to face Steve Bovan in the final, but it was never run as a curfew ended the race. Then came a series of match races in April. On the 6th, he was at New York for a best of three against Hedrick. Don lost that match, but he won the following day at Cecil County where he took on another Corvair. This time he faced the "Doug's Headers" car driven by Dick Bourgeois. Don won the first race with his 8.03/170.77 beating the Corvair's 8.19/175 and in the second race, Dick fouled away an 8.39/124 while "Dyno" coasted to the win with a 9.78/89.95. While Nicholson had already sewn up the win, they came back for one more race. This time Bourgeois got the win with an 8.04/179 when "Dyno" fouled at 8.09/168.22. These two would face each other again on April 11 in Ontario, Canada. Don won their first race with an 8.47/161, but he fouled in the second and broke a transmission in the third. Shortly after that, (April 14), he faced the strong Mustang of Tommy Grove and he lost that match as well. He had a rematch against Hedrick on May 3 at Detroit. Once again, Hedrick got the better of him. In their first race, Don’s 8.36/164.83 lost to Terry's 8.08/177. He came back to win the second with a close 8.15/171.75 beating the Chevy driver's 8.16/175. In the third race, Nicholson had problems and shut off to 10.23 while Hedrick picked up the match race victory with an 8.09/177. On May 30, he competed at the Olympics of Drag Racing at Union Grove, but lost a supercharger and went out early. A match race against Bourgeois was run at Houston early in June and Don's first two runs of 8.24/161.89 and 8.66/153.55 were enough to beat Dick two straight. The Corvair's final 8.39/177 won the last race when Don shut off. By late June, Nicholson was driving the Cougar, which debuted at a match race at Capitol against Jim Liberman. |

Notes: Seaton's first all-glass car. Round-tube Logghe chassis replaced "too flexy" square-tube frame of old A/XS Corvair. One-piece fliptop weighed in at 1880 pounds. Aluminum-headed 427, Turbo-hydro, 9" Ford rear, 3.51:1 gear, Detroit Locker. American Rodding 9/68 feature said that when the car nabs "World's Fastest Chevy" title, longtime "Shaker" decklid inscription "Chevy Will Rise Again" will be revised to "Has Risen." | Terry Hedrick replaced longtime Seaton driver Del Heinelt in mid-season. (Sadly, Heinelt died shortly afterward, shoeing Larry Coleman's blown Mustang when it went airborne at the '67 Nationals.) Listed times from nearly new car at Indy '67. Confirmed 8.23/180.72, 8.22/177.16, and 8.02/182.18 from 11/26/67 OCIR Manufacturers Meet. - RT | Terry was at Houston in October for a best of three match race against Nick Revon. Hedrick easily won the first two races with times of 8.83/173 and 8.90/163. Nick had motor problems and was unable to run the third race, so Terry soloed with an 8.24/181.08. Shortly after that, he was at Fremont for its third annual exhibition Car Championships. Hedrick was running well; he even stopped the strong Mustang of Tommy Grove in the semifinals with an 8.55/176.55. He faced the newly supercharged Comet of Ed Schartman in the final and lost to the Comet's 8.08. His next stop was at Irwindale for its experimental Stock Invitational race. Unfortunately, he lost there to Ronnie Runyan in the opening round. | Best NHRA national event times of 7.942/181.44 at Indy 67. MPH Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/26/67 |

Notes: There were several incarnations of the Shark. Per Bill Duke, all Sharks were 392 powered. Frank Federici loved his Corvettes. He raced them regularly until he decided to go the Funny Car route in '67 with his first "Shark" Corvette. He ran that first Funny Car for two seasons before building this one for '69. Like his first Corvette FC, this one also used a Logghe chassis. The Corvette body came from Fiberglass Ltd., and Al Bergler did the tin. Ed Pink built the 392 Hemi. Mondello was responsible for the work on the heads. Young crew chief Phil Roberts was in charge of keeping the 1,500 hp in top condition. Frank lost a best-of-three-match race in April to Don Schumacher. In the first race of the match, not only did he foul, but the transmission let go as well. Schumacher gave him extra time to repair, and the two lined up for their second race. Once again, Frank's transmission went away, and Don got his second win and the match race victory. He beat Dick Loehr's Mustang at Connecticut two straight with a 7.90 best and then went to Maple Grove on April 27, where he defeated Al Graeber's "Tickle Me Pink" Charger three straight. Frank ran 8.18 and 8.14 to win the match. He was at Epping on May 11, where he put Jimmy King's Top Fuel engine in his car. He only made one run with the engine, a 7.99/182. Maybe "King and Marshall" were preparing to go Funny Car racing. Shortly after that (May 17), he was at Capitol Raceway for its Mr.Chevrolet Invitational race. In the opening round, Mike Burkhart's Camaro broke against him. It was a good thing it did as Frank's Corvette blew a transmission. In round two, his 8.13/180.00 defeated Mel Perry's 8.41/189. He lost in the semifinal to "Jungle Jim" Liberman when Federici had his brakes fail, and he could not stage the car. Another match race was run on May 27 at Maple Grove against Al Graeber in the "Tickle Me Pink" Charger. Frank won all three races with a best of 8.14/176.12. In July, Bruce Larson got the best of Frank at a match race at Great Meadows. Frank lost a transmission in the first race and got outrun in the second, giving Bruce two straight for the match race win. On July 20, he raced at the Cars Magazine Meet, but he lost to Don Schumacher's 7.54/201 in the first round. Frank had beaten Jim Liberman at a match race on September 6 and had hurt his motor while taking the match. He had no time to fix it as he had to race in Connecticut the next day (September 7). So, he pulled the piston and rod and ran on seven cylinders! An 8.50/174.41 beat Al Graeber's 8.74/156 in the first round, and in the semis, an 8.57/169.94 beat Kosty Ivanof's 9.01. In the final, he met Malcolm Durham and lost with an out-of-shape 13.39 to Durham's 8.11/174. But he sure had the fans pulling for him when after the loss, with both chutes dragging behind the car, he went down the return road, stopped, and did a burnout. After that, he bowed to the fans. The next day, September 8, they did it again at Connecticut, but this time with sixteen cars. Unfortunately, Frank lost fire in the first round against Paul Stefansky. Frank ran a known best of 181.44 with his own engine. |
