Notes: Conway started the year at Irwindale on January 1, qualifying 6th with an 8.31 but losing to Hayden Proffitt's holeshot 8.49/166.97 to Gene's 8.39/173.74 in the first round. On January 28 at Lions for the AHRA Funny Car meet, his 8.98/164.83 qualified him 21. He lost to Roger Lindamood in the first round. Still, at Lions on February 24, Conway's 8.20 qualified him eighth in a sixteen-car field. A first-round 8.13/176.81 failed to beat Rusty Delling's 8.08 in a Firebird. The following day at Carlsbad, an 8.35/175.43 won the first-round before Lew Arrington ran an 8.24/181.80 to his 8.43/174.75 in round two. He was runner-up to Rusty Delling on March 17 at the West Coast Championships at Fremont. Gene was at Lions on May 18 for a big Funny Car show. After the top eight qualifiers filled their field, there were so many cars that a second eight-car field was made up of the following eight lowest ET cars. In this second eight-car field, Gene qualified last with a 9.89. The Jeep dropped a cylinder in the first round, and his 10.06/105 lost to Larry Barker's 8.84/175. At the OCIR Funny Car 500 on June 1, Conway beat Andy Clary in round one, with an 8.40, but he failed to make it into the finals. On June 22 at Irwindale, he fouled away an 8.10/178.57 in round one. On August 10, everyone involved in drag racing was watching the big $28,000 to win drag race between Bennie Osborn and Tom McEwen at OCIR. Of course, everyone now knows that Osborn upset McEwen for the prize, but few realized that there was also an Funny Car race being held. Conway won that race with a final round 8.29 over Jess Tyree's 8.38. Back at OCIR on August 31, Gene went to the semifinal running a best of 8.08/180.36 before losing to Dave Beebe. Not sure how much longer he ran the Jeep after this. The car ran 8.080 at Orange County on 8/31/68. |

Notes: The "California Camaro" was behind the times as far as FC's went in '68. The car used a steel body with a fiberglass front end, doors, and trunk lid. A Torqueflite transmission provided the power to the 4.10 Olds rear end. By '68, this was very much outdated. On a local level, it was competitive, but the team showed up at Lions for an eight-car show on July 27. Even Thermos fully expected the car to get "bumped" from the field. His 8.75/159.01 held for the #6 spot in the show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 9.51/155.44 fell to Gene Conway's 8.16/175 in his "Destroyer" Jeep. |

Notes: Bovan's new Camaro was based on a 128" Mike Hoag-built chassis. It used a Pontiac rear with 3.90 gears. A Torqueflite trans transferred the power back from the 427 Chevy. The engine used a Crankshaft Company Crank with stock cubic inches.ForgeTrue pistons sat on M/T rods. Mondello did the heads, and an Isky cam was used. The top of the engine featured a Don Hampton-built GMC 6/71 blower that was overdriven 24% and was fed via an Enderle injection. Cragar supplied the blower drive. On March 19, Steven qualified #1 for an eight-car field at Carlsbad. Fifteen cars were attempting to make the show, and his 8.46/172 got him the pole. In the opening round of eliminations, he lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Steve was at Cecil County on June 17 for a best of three match against Paula Murphy. Paula won their first race with an 8.86/160, but Steve came back to win the next two and the match. In their second race, his 8.90/157.61 beat the Mustang's 9.08/139. Bovan cut a great light in the deciding race, and his 8.96/157 held on to win over Murphy's quicker 8.91. - RH | Also ran 9.05 at 175.78 at OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67. - Danny White | Bovan's Camaro was painted red on the passenger side and blue on the driver's side, with a wide swath of white down the middle, making for somewhat confusing profile photos. He was featured in the 9/67 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. - RT | Bovan's '67 bests were 8.15/180.10. - BP |

Notes: Foster had a bad fire at Lakeland early in November. He was there for a four-car race. He got out on Don Gay in his first race and looked to have him beat until the Mustang shut down and Gay roared past in the lights. He was unable to race any more that day as Sonny Atkins rolled his blown altered roadster, and it ended up coming to a rest on top of Foster's Mustang. | Did this car switch to a blower in the late season? It would make sense, as many FCs did. - RT |

Notes: Flip roof, removable front. In April, Al was at Cecil County for a best of three match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. The Charger was newly equipped with a supercharger after running injected early in the season. Graeber lost all three races and the match, but his times were good. He ran 8.38/175.09 that lost to Liberman's 8.38/151. In the second race, his 8.49/175.09 lost to JJ's 8.21/143, and a final 8.39/175.43 lost to Jim's 8.07/176. The track record was 8.03 by Don Nicholson. Graeber was at Cecil County for the CARS All-Star Championships. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.72/180 advanced over a fouling Arnie Beswick. In the second round, he ran 8.11/177.86 to beat Tony Wahlay, but in the semifinal, eventual winner Dick Loehr's 7.87/182 beat Al's 8.33/175.09. |

Notes: Huston ran at NHRA Dallas World Finals, but the note we have is that he was subbing for Division 2 champ Tommy Smith, whose car had burned. Huston qualified #10 at 7.66 and ran 7.62 in round one, to take out a centerline crossing John Dekker. Gene Snow defeated Huston in round two, 7.21/205 to 7.61/180.00. We will place those times here based on the NHRA note about Smith's burned Dart. Please confirm if you know this story. This was the car involved in the infamous Yellow River accident. |

Notes: Ron was driving the "Greek's" car at Lakeland on April 6 for a six-car show. All cars made three passes, and in O'Donnell's first race, his 7.98/179.29 beat Mike Van Sant in the "Invader." The "Super Camaro" broke against him in the second race, and Ron ran 8.10/178.17 to win. He also won his third race with an 8.0/180 over Curtis Wasson's 8.10/179. |

Notes: Gervase O'Neill was originally from Canada before moving to California. Gervase's brother Johnny, who opened up Johnny's Tune Up in Gardena, California, was his tuner. After racing a Chevelle and a Corvette, a new Camaro was built in 1972, complete with Chevrolet cast iron Rat Power. The "King Rat" Camaro was a regular at Southern California match races until 1977. The Camaro eventually ran a best of 6.67 with pure Chevy power. Only a couple of racers went faster with a Chevy. Gervase might not have been a big winner or as well known as other Chevy racers, but he goes down in history as one of the quickest fuel Chevy racers ever. |

Notes: Blown fuel. This car was built late in 1966, probably did not hit the strip until 1967. Alley ran this same chassis through 1970 with Cudas replacing the Charger, and a Duster replacing the Cuda bodies. |

Notes: Eddie Pauling's new Cougar for '69 used a chassis built by Bill Brawner and himself. Bill built the 392 Hemi that was bored out slightly to 396. M/T rods and pistons were used as well as an Isky cam. Mondello reworked the heads. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold. There was no transmission as the car was direct drive with a Hays triple disc clutch. The rear end was a '57 Olds with 3.90 gears. |

Notes: Lunati was at Connecticut in May for a best of three match against Bill Lawton. He lost the match but did make a good showing. He was back in Connecticut on June 11 for a best of three match race against the "Ramchargers." Lunati held the track speed record going into this match at 170.45. The report did not mention who was driving the Dart as both Jim Thornton and Mike Buckel were both behind the wheel at various times during the year. The week after this match, Jim was driving. In their first race, Joe's 8.56/159.01 beat the "Rams" 8.80/166. But in the next two races, the Dart was able to beat the Camaro and win the match while resetting both the ET and speed record at 8.42/174. Lunati was runner-up to Doug Thorley in Funny Car Eliminator at the '67 NHRA Nationals. Turned 8.200/179.28 to the winner's 7.83/192.30. - RT |

Notes: Charlie was still running the Dart on Jan 4 when he showed up at OCIR for the first All-Pro race. In the first round, he beat alternate Don Schumacher who broke a driveshaft with a 7.49/175.09. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 7.45/175.43 when Dave Beebe broke in the "Dodge Fever" car. Unfortunately, in the final against Gene Conway, Allen's transmission let go. |

In the semifinals, he needed only an 8.55/179.21 to advance when Huston Platt fouled. Unfortunately, his good luck ended in the final, where he lost to Dick Harrell. A couple of days later (August 13), he was at Capitol's Mr. Chevrolet race. Here, he had no luck as he blew a transmission in his race against Mel Perry in the first round. |

Notes: After Ford pulled the plug on its racing support early in '70, the Ford racers were forced to "go it alone" for the season. Up until the axing of its racing operations, Ford was still doing well in drag racing. But this was a severe blow as Ford had asked Kalitta to sort out its Boss 429 for fuel racing. The car was not responding well with the 429, and at numerous races, he reverted to the 427 SOHC to stay competitive. Parts for that engine were now scarce, so after Ford bailed, he switched to a 426 Hemi to power his TF dragster and the Mustang FC. In one of its earliest outings with the Hemi, Kalitta was at New York National Speedway in mid-May for its Springnationals. His 8.59 beat Arnold Arnold in the "Super Cuda," which had transmission trouble in the first round. Rain disrupted the race, and in between, they kept trying to run it until finally completing it on Sunday, May 24. Conrad did not reach the final; he had transmission problems himself, and his best pass was 7.92/179.09. Maple Grove held a sixteen-car show on Wednesday, August 12. Kalitta lost to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein in the second round. Conrad was at Tri-City in September for an eight-car show. He soloed in the first round with an 8.12/123.62 when the "Hawaiian" broke on the line. In the semifinals, his 7.43/173.74 beat Roger Lindamood. In the final, he faced Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Pat got the win when Kalitta lost a clutch to the line. We need confirmation of the listed 6.93. (See the other entry for the Boss 429 times). |

Notes: Wolford ran at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships on August 3. He beat a fouling Steve Bovan in the first round, with an 8.77/171.42, but in the semifinals, he lost fire against Gas Ronda. He lost in the first round, to Marv Eldridge at OCIR on August 31. On September 21, Wolford was at Lions, where 35 cars ran the first-round with the eight lowest ET's advancing into round two. Roger lost in his first-round race and his time failed to advance into round two, but he came out later and ran 7.94/175.78 to win an all-Jeep battle against Gene Conway in the "Destroyer." |

Notes: McEwen was at Fontana on September 25, where he made three exhibition runs. His times were 9.63/152.54, 9.60/154.63, and an out-of-shape 11.89/145.16. Rear-engine blown fuel. This replaced the Cuda he crashed earlier in the year. Tom sold the car to Fred Goeske in 1966. The photo is actually from early 1966 but reflects the late 1965 second car. Don Montgomery's "Dragster and Funny Car Memories" book quotes unattributed times of 8.88/178.92. Per Chris Martin, Tom ran 8.82/171 at Lions on the night that Dyer ran the great 8.63.
