Notes: The first 290 mph Funny Car in the sport at Ennis 1991 with a 290.13 blast. Wes Cerny's 290 mph tuning skills on this car caught the attention of Kenny Bernstein, who hired him for the 1992 season, resulting in the sport's first 300 mph run. Photo from Indy 1991. | Jim qualified #1 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with track records of 5.25/278.63. The team was running a new engine set-up that used Leonard Hughes cylinder heads with Wes Cerny's tune up. They actually qualified with their "old" engine and switched to the "new" combination for eliminations. A first-round 5.39/277.26 stopped Gary Litton's 5.58/259. In round two, Dominic Santucci lost to White's 5.36/273.63 and a semifinal 5.33/272.89 beat Mark Oswald, who smoked the tires and shut off. He faced Mike Dunn in the final. Their times in eliminations had been close, but White's 5.39/263.77 finished second best to Dunn's 5.34/275. The "Hawaiian" team followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where, once again, Jim qualified #1 with track records of 5.34/274.72. The field was short, so White got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 5.35/274.72 (again!) He was flexing the car's power as that was easily Low ET of the opening round. In round two, he downed Ed McCulloch with a 5.41/255.39 and a semifinal 5.44/270.83 beat Al Hofmann, whose car broke an A-arm on the run. He came up against John Force in the final. White had been running a tenth faster than Force. Jim got the victory with a 5.54/271.90 when Force tried to match the "Hawaiian's" times and put too much power into it and smoked the tires. Jim continued to set track records at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.18 track record at 280.19 (Top Speed) qualified #1 for the third straight NHRA event. An opening round 5.39/273.47 beat Gary Bolger's 5.53/261 and a 5.38/276.66 beat Santucci's close 5.38/272 in round two. But in the semifinals, White blew an engine and slowed to a 5.70/193.88, losing to eventual winner Del Worsham's 5.37/272. The team's combination didn't work quite as well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Jim’s 5.50/263.00 qualified #4 and he was upset in the first round, when Richard Hartman's 5.71/255 got the better of his 5.74/249.30. Jim's 291.82 at the World Finals was the Top Speed of the entire meet, including the Top Fuelers.

Notes: Photo from the 1992 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. | John started his '92 season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.22/283.91. He ran 5.34/273.80 over Tom Hoover in the first round, and a track record 5.18 at 281.25 in round two beat Jerry Caminito. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.28/271.41 when Marc Sievers shut off on the line with no oil pressure. In the final, he faced Jim Epler. Jim had been running steady 5.2's during eliminations and had lane choice going into the final. Epler ran his best ET of eliminations in the final, a 5.26/273, to take the win over Force's 5.32/275.65. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, John set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.24/283.37. In the first round, he beat Ron Sutherland with a 5.33/277.60, but in round two, he fell off to a 5.46/271.98 that lost to eventual winner Hoover's 5.32/259. He qualified #1 again at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals with a 5.18/285.08. An improved 5.15/273.30 in the first round, beat Paula Martin, and he ran another 5.15 at 287.35 (Top Speed) in round two, but it wasn't enough to beat Cruz Pedregon's quick-leaving 5.18/276. John took everything there was to win at the NHRA Gatornationals. He took the pole with a 5.21/284.99. He ran 5.27/285.89, 5.21/287.44, and 5.20/286.16 to beat Gary Densham, Whit Bazemore, and a tire-smoking Cruz Pedregon to face Epler in the final for a rematch of the Winternationals final. This time John got the victory, running Low ET and Top Speed of the meet with a 5.15/289.01, winning over Jim's 5.27/275. NHRA held its Winston Invitational at Rockingham in April, and Force qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.33/280.11 (Top Speed and a new track record). Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and shut off to a 12.92/69.08 that lost to Mark Oswald's 5.32/276. He won the next NHRA race, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. There he qualified #8 with a 5.34/271.98. He improved to a 5.19/269.05 in the first round, over Al Hofmann's 5.22/281. Pedregon smoked the tires in the second round, and John moved on with a 5.21/285.35. In the semifinals, his 5.22/265.33 dropped Chuck Etchells' 5.31/251. He went up against Del Worsham in the final, and the two had a close race with John's 5.24/282.04 beating Del's right-there 5.25/277.

Notes: Hoover started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.22/277.69 qualified #7. Both he and his opponent, Kenji Okazaki, smoked their tires hard in the opening round, and Hoover recovered first with an 8.45/150.72 over Kenji's 11.42. He again smoked the tires in round two and lost to Al Hofmann's 5.16/281. He qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.73, and he lost to low qualifier Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Tom ran much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where his 5.24/252.24 qualified #7. Wyatt Radke broke against him in the first round, and Tom ran 5.91/150 to advance. In the second round, his 6.07/160 lost to Hofmann's 5.18/285. Tom had another solid season with consistent runs, elimination wins, and an event victory at the Autolite Nationals. His best times of 5.146/291.35 came at the World Finals.

Notes: Richard drove four cars in 1997. We think he started the season in the Geronimo car and ran his best times. We need confirmation. Richard qualified #11 at Pomona at 5.086/246.17. He beat Cruz Pedregon in round one, 5.123/256.70 to 14.49/67, and Gary Bolger in round two, 6.353/193.46 to 8.08/114. Al Hofmann defeated him in the semis, 4.90/311 to 6.361/138.76. He qualified #5 at Phoenix at 5.044/291.26 but lost to Chuck Etchells in round one, 5.10/286 to 7.190/125.36. At Houston, Richard ran 5.152/283.10 for the #12 slot but lost to Etchells in the first round, 5.12/305 to 5.486/283.73. Richard ran 5.355/284.09 to claim the #16 position at Englishtown but was a no show against Etchells in round one. At Topeka, Richard was driving the Ray Higley machine. We need to confirm if any of these listed events were in one of the other three cars Richard drove this year.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1993 US Nats (Big Bud Shootout), Indy. Qualified 13th at 5.29/280.72 for Monday eliminations. Improved to 5.24/281.60, but lost to Al Hofmann in round one. (Qualified on the bump 8th spot in the Big Bud Shootout. Lost to John Force in round one). | Bazemore first drove for Johnny West on July 10 at the Parts Plus Nationals at US 131 Martin, Michigan. Four Funny Cars ran at the meet and Whit was declared the overall winner when he beat Jerry Caminito with a 5.65 and Gary Bolger with a 5.61 at a track speed record of 264.90. His next outing was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 5.77/247.38 qualified #14, but a first-round 5.86/195.99 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.69/248. NHRA's next stop was at Sonoma for the California Nationals. There a 5.51/269.54 qualified #13. Whit lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Bazemore qualified #10 at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 5.27/284.09. A first-round 5.28/285.17 failed to get past Gordie Bonin's 5.24/281. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen spots available so qualifying was not a problem. Still, Whit ran 5.61/266.98 to qualify #12. A first-round 5.53/270.83 beat Hoover's 5.63/203. In the second round, Bazemore showed his driving skills when his 5.31/275.22 beat Hofmann's quicker and faster 5.26/280. His run came to an end in the semifinals where he lost to Cruz Pedregon.

Notes: Bolger qualified #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.25/269.29. In the first round, his 5.24/280.54 beat Gary Densham's 5.28/285. In the second round, he pulled an upset as his 5.31/278.12 defeated low qualifier John Force's 5.39/278. His run ended in the semi-final, where his 5.32/278.72 fell to Chuck Etchells' 5.12/285. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.19/279.50. In the opening round, he slowed to 5.36/269.38 in a loss to Etchells' 5.20/290. Houston was not kind to the team as Bolger had all kinds of problems, and his 7.36 best failed to qualify. It was his first DNQ since the '93 NHRA U.S. Nationals. His first run was 10.38, and he followed that with times of 12.52, 8.69, and finally, the 7.36. Things went much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.24/270.83 qualified #8. Once again, Etchells beat him in round one. The next stop was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. Bolger ran 5.26/280.63 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. This time he lost to Al Hofmann in the first round. At Atlanta, he qualified #7 at 5.27/282.84 but getting past that first round continued to be tough as he lost to Densham this time. Memphis was next on the NHRA calendar, and Bolger qualified #12 for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.38/277.52. Force stopped him in round one. Photo from US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan.

Notes: Low qualifier at Sonoma 1993 (setting a new track record). | Mineo, 61, and four others, including three members of his family, died in September 2006 as the result of a high-speed boating accident on a Texas lake. News accounts reported Mineo's craft collided with another boat during a 100-mph poker run. - RT | Photo from Ennis 93. - RO | Mineo started the '93 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.88/187.57 was good for the second alternate spot. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, he qualified #14 with a 5.55/253.95. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round, with an off-pace 6.14/163.01. He broke in round two, giving Jim Epler a free ride into the semifinals. Gordon qualified #6 at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals with a 5.20/257.06. A troubled 6.14/166.29 beat an equally troubled Gary Densham at 7.40/104 in round one, but in round two he lost a motor against Brent Fanning and the resulting fire destroyed the Firebird body. He was OK. He had a new body installed in time for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.28/282.04 qualified #7. In the first round, Paul Smith fouled against him and Mineo advanced with a 5.68/222.99. He lost to Freddie Neely in round two.

Notes: Cory drove this car at Brainerd to a 5.170/290.51. He ran many NHRA races this year with better times. However, we need to determine which races were run in this car versus the other machines he drove.

Notes: Whit qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.28/290.32. In the first round, he had problems and slowed to 6.14/159.71 in a loss to Cruz Pedregon's 5.12/278. In April, he was at Rockingham for the NHRA Invitational race. It was just an eight-car field, and his 5.22/285.98 qualified #7. A 5.24/284.27 beat Pedregon's 5.40/234 in the opening round, but he slowed to 6.02/164.05 in the semi-final while losing to Chuck Etchell's 5.35/269. Things did not go well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #11 with a 5.29/274.55. In the first round, his 5.29/283.73 fell to Dean Skuza's 5.25/282. But as the car entered the speed traps, the rear tire blew out. The exploding tire shredded the body and damaged the chassis. We need to confirm that Whit ran these times in Whit's own car. He drove for John West, too. Check DragStats when we confirm which car ran at which race. Archived 5.225 at 285.98 in this car. Ran an identical 290.32 best speeds at Gainesville and Englishtown.

Notes: Al qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.30/280.28. In the first round, he beat Gary Bolger with a 5.28/273.97. In round two, he ran a 5.30/277.52 but lost to Jim Epler's 5.27/272. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Hofmann continued to qualify well, running a 5.38/265.56 for the #7 spot. However, he lost in the first round, to Gary Densham. The next race on the NHRA schedule was at Houston for the Supernationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.29/271.90. He made it into the semifinals by beating Bolger in the first round, with a 5.30/272.14, and in round two, a 5.28/273.30 beat Del Worsham. In the semis, a 5.23/273.30 finished second best to Cruz Pedregon's track record 5.10/272. A 5.25/277.17 qualified #2 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 10.31/74.14 loss to Bolger's 5.23/275. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. Al qualified for the eight-car show with a 5.31/277.09. In round one, he beat Whit Bazemore's 5.45/270 with a 5.34/271.65. In the semifinals, both he and Mark Oswald ran 5.40 (Al at 272), but Mark got the win. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he qualified #9 with a 5.38/276.66. He really stepped it up for the first-round, running a 5.22/281.25, but that wasn't good enough to advance, as John Force ran a 5.19/269 to get the win. Al was smiling after the next NHRA race, as he won the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.30/280.37 and improved to a 5.25/273.14 in winning his first-round race over Jerry Caminito's 5.67/231. In the second round, another 5.30 at 273.97 beat Chuck Etchells, and in the semifinals, a 5.38/274.22 beat a motor blowing Force at 5.41/269. He met Bazemore in the final, and Whit smoked the tires while Hofmann recorded a 5.40/279.67 victory. He repeated at the very next race, winning the NHRA Springnationals to make it two in a row. There he ran 5.29/275.65 to qualify #4. A first-round 5.35/273.14 beat Norm Wilding, and in round two, a 5.31/274.47 advanced when Gordon Mineo fouled. Al was sharp on the tree in the semifinals when his 5.28/273.22 took out Etchells' quicker 5.26/278. A final round 5.31 at only 263.31 got the win when Pedregon fouled. He almost made it three in a row when he made it into the finals at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Al qualified on the pole with a 5.34 (Low ET) at 274.22. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.45/270.67 when Troy Ray broke. In round two, a 5.43/266.50 stopped Worsham's 5.58/272, and in the semifinals, a 5.41/263.85 beat Mark Oswald's off pace 5.84/196. In the final, he ran Force, and John's 5.34/278 got the victory over Al's 5.42/264.70. His luck ran out at the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. He didn't run badly there; he just didn't make it into another final. A 5.24/264.08 qualified #3, and he ran a strong 5.21/277.86 in the first round, to beat R.C. Sherman, but in round two, he smoked the tires and lost to Worsham's 5.32/277.

Notes: Kenji started the season by pushing Jim Dunn's car to a 5.25/278.46 to qualify #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, both he and Tom Hoover smoked the tires in the first round, with Hoover's 8.45/150 beating Okazaki's shut off 11.42/73.87. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, a 5.29/280.46 qualified #9. He beat Whit Bazemore in the first round, with a 5.30/268.09, but an even better 5.27/267.05 in round two lost to eventual winner Cruz Pedregon's 5.13/289. The NHRA Supernationals at Houston was not a good outing for Dunn and Okazaki. They qualified #8 with a 5.30/267.45. Kenji went back out to try to better his time and had a motor blow. The resulting fire wrecked the body and they were unable to run in eliminations. The team was unable to repair in time for the NHRA Gatornationals, but they were back in action at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. Unfortunately, a best of 6.16/155.44 failed to qualify. Kenji qualified at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals in May. His 5.43/261.62 qualified #9. More bad luck set in when he broke in the first round, against Gordon Mineo. The next race was the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. Kenji ran 5.27/262.92 to qualify #10. A 5.23/269.13 advanced past the first-round when Bazemore broke(?). He lost to Chuck Etchells in round two.

Notes: Pulde qualified #8 at Pomona for NHRA Winternationals with 5.24/281.07. He improved to 5.11/285.53 in the opening to defeat Gary Bolger. In round two, his 5.12/284.27 beat Cruz Pedregon's 5.20/287. But despite running a consistent 5.13/283.37 in the semi-final, he got left on by John Force, and Force's 5.15/288 held on to win. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.18/282.84 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he shut down early with problems in the first round and lost to Gordon Mineo's 6.14/163. He did not go to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, but he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #4 there at 5.12/289.76. But he went home early again as his off-pace 5.82/240.77 fell to Bolger's 5.35/262 in the first round. Dale's best times were 5.088 at Ennis and 289.76 at Gainesville.

Notes: Chuck didn't race at the first two NHRA events of '92, but he was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. He debuted his new sponsor, Nobody Beats the Wiz. His associate sponsors included Snap-On Tools, Mopar Performance, and Mothers. Other major sponsors included Superwinch and Kendall GT-1. At Houston, his 5.37/276.58 qualified #9 for the show. In the first round, an even better 5.26/272.47 lost to a quicker, leaving Cruz Pedregon at 5.29/252. Cruz would go on to win his first win in NHRA Funny Car competition. Etchells then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.28/274.55. A first-round 5.23/281.60 beat Tom Hoover, but he again fell to a Pedregon holeshot in round two. This time Cruz's 5.21/285 stopped his 5.17/281.77. The next stop was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car show, and Chuck's 5.35/272.89 qualified #4. He beat Paul Smith in the opening round with a 5.37/273.05, and a semifinal 5.40/261.02 beat Freddie Neely. He faced Mark Oswald in the final, and Etchells slowed to 5.50/235.23 in a runner-up finish to Oswald's 5.33/279. NHRA's next race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 5.27/270.75 qualified #5 and another 5.27 at 266.35 beat a tire-smoking Jim Epler in the first round. In the second round, Oswald broke a rear end, and Etchells' 5.30/273.30 advanced. In the semifinals, eventual winner John Force ran 5.22/265 to beat his 5.31/251.53. The NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis was next on the calendar, and Chuck's 5.35/274.64 qualified #7. He beat Hoover in round one, with a 5.37/275.48, but he lost to Al Hofmann in round two. At NHRA's seventh race of the season, the Springnationals at Columbus, Etchells grabbed his first pole of the year with a 5.23/279.85. He continued to look tough in the first round, where his 5.26/275.56 beat Gary Litton. In round two, he beat Whit Bazemore with a 5.28/271.16. But in the semifinals, he lost a close race with Hofmann. Etchells' quicker 5.26/278.89 lost to Al's 5.28/273. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran 5.51/259.59 to qualify #8. Unfortunately, in the opening round, an off-pace 5.93/197.32 lost to Del Worsham's 5.64/266.

Notes: Roland got the sponsor, but no money ever changed hands. That is why Roland parked the car after this race. The team switched between two beautiful bodies on this car in '93: a purple one and the aqua, blue one pictured here at Columbus 1993. One half of the quickest side-by-side race in history at Houston Slick 50 Nats with John Force, Gordie 5.131, and Force 5.156. This team made its NHRA debut at the Supernationals. Car owner Roland Leong turned the wrenches over to Leonard Hughes, and he hired "240 MPH" Gordie Bonin to drive. Things started slowly when they failed to qualify at Houston, but things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin qualified #9 with a 5.36/286.35. He improved to 5.28/281.86 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Chuck Etchells' 5.21/274. NHRA's next event was the non-points Winston Invitational at Rockingham. A 5.37/276.32 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.42/268.01 advanced when Etchells broke. In the semifinals, Gordie had a bit more luck when Wyatt Radke broke against him, and his 5.33/237.34 advanced into the final. There he met Al Hofmann, and this time Bonin had problems and slowed to a 10.14/80.97 while Al got the victory with a 5.18/288. The team really picked up the pace at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Gordie's 5.14/286.53 qualified #3. Unfortunately, the throttle linkage broke in the first round, and his 6.58/134.60 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.72/195. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. A 5.30/282.22 qualified #5. Bonin picked up to a 5.23/279.76 in the first round to beat Jim Epler, and in round two, his 5.26/285.89 got around Etchells close 5.27/274. In the semifinals, Bonin slowed to 5.53/242.71, which lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.27/284. At Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals, a great 5.08 at 285.80 qualified #3. He beat Gordon Mineo in round one, with a 5.23/277.60, but in the second round, he lost to Hoover. It had been twelve years since Bonin's last NHRA victory, but at the Springnationals, he got another. In qualifying, a 5.23/289.48 (Top Speed) had placed him #4 on the grid. A first-round 5.27/282.39 took out Gary Densham, while in round two, his 5.24/288.73 beat Hofmann's 5.25/281 in a close one. Bonin had to do a bit of driving in the semifinals as his 5.31/284.90 beat Radke's slightly quicker 5.30/278. He beat Mineo in the final with a 5.60/194.34. He almost made it two in a row when he reached the final at the next NHRA race, the Western Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 5.27/282.75. A first-round 5.40/280.46 beat Densham. He lost a blower belt in round two, and the car slowed to 6.48/144.92, but it was still enough to beat a tire-smoking Hoover who registered a 9.80 in losing. Gordie had a close semifinal race with Cruz Pedregon, where his 5.37/271.98 narrowly beat Pedregon's 5.39/268. This set up a final-round meeting with Force. This was Force's race as he qualified #1, set Low ET and Top Speed, and in the final, his 5.25/283 got the victory over Bonin's troubled, shut off 9.97/82.16. Another final round appearance came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. Hughes tuned the car to a 5.45/259.44 in qualifying #4 in the thin air. Bonin made his way to the finals by stopping Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.52/265.33 and a second-round 5.45/273.55 beat Bruce Nilson. Etchells smoked his tires against him in the semifinals, and Bonin's 5.60/240.96 got him into the final. He faced Pedregon, and Gordie's 5.71/253.23 was no match for Cruz at 5.48/263. After all those good runs, Sonoma was a bit of a disappointment. The team qualified #8 for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.35/281.51, but Hofmann beat them in the first round.

Notes: Pedregon started the season at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January He and crew chief Lee Beard made six passes with a best of 5.33/272.06. Tire shake killed three runs, but the other two were 5.52/257.28 and 5.39/269.29. At NHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, Cruz set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 5.10/285.26. He eased to 5.87/170.68 in the first round, when Jerry Caminito broke, but in the second round, his 5.20/286.44 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.12/284 in Joe Pisano's car. The following week, he was in Arizona for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a track record 5.07 at 284.18. He went on to win the race by beating Tom Hoover with a 5.13/288.00, Kenji Okazaki with a 5.13/289.01 (Top Speed), and in the semifinals, his 5.20/287.90 took out Del Worsham's 5.27/283. In the final, he faced Jim Epler, and Cruz won with a 5.21/263.31 over Epler's troubled 9.56/89.65. NHRA's next stop was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. Cruz qualified #4 with a 5.14/286.16. Once again, Cruz ran well, running 5.15/279.50 in the opening round over Worsham and a 5.22/277.26 beat Chuck Etchells' identical 5.22/276 in round two. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 5.17/281.09 in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.04/294. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.20/285.71 qualified #6. He beat Caminito in the first round, with a 5.29/280.72, but a 5.27/250.83 lost to Force's 5.09/292 in round two.
