Notes: The Nitro Funny Cars set the Quit Motorplex alight last night with a fantastic display of match racing from the Greene Machine and Chemical Warfare teams. The best was saved for last when Allan Dobson ran an awesome 5.33, Australia's quickest ever funny car pass. The run was one of the night's most spectacular when the skilled Dobson pedalled at around 200 feet, locking up the clutch and putting the front wheels about a foot into the air with a powerstand out to almost half track. Unfortunately Dobson clipped a timing box at the finish line with the body, handing the win to Ashley Bailey. The first-round match up saw Dobson smoke the tyres 100 feet out, facing both walls before wrangling the car back into the middle of the lane. Bailey ran through for a then PB 5.45. The second race was brilliant for the crowd with both cars pedalling several times, remaining even right to the 1,000 feet beam before Bailey clicked early, Dobson able to thunder through for a 5.61/284 MPH win against Bailey's 5.85. Of course the final race was the best, Dobson's 5.33 narrowly defeating a 5.44 from Bailey. It was difficult to tell if Dobson left the ET beam intact or not on the finish line. If so this was Australia's quickest side by side funny car race. If not, it probably would still have been given how close Bailey was to Dobson at the finish line. All in all a fantastic show put on by the funny cars in front of the season's biggest crowd. |

Notes: Old Cellone Bros. car. | I used to have to try to leave two days early to get the win in this car. As a result, I had a lot of redlights. I used to drive in cowboy boots and I had a red pair. The crew told me to go and get some green ones instead and maybe I'll stop redlighting! I went and found some green ostrich boots in Dallas and wore them to drive this car! - Freddie Neely, Racin & Rocking with Draglist.com, November 2, 2015 |

Notes: Norm raced at two NHRA national events this year, but also drove three cars. We are listing all the times with this entry. If we find that one of the other cars were used on the NHRA trail as well, we will make the appropriate adjustments at the time. Norm started the season at the Southern Nationals with a 5.422/273.39 third alternate effort. He then went to St. Louis, where he qualified #16 at 5.470/274.89. He lost Tommy Johnson Jr. in round one but ran his best times of the season with his 5.306/284.62 following TJ's 4.97/301 through the traps. Al Tracy photo from 1999 Gateway's, Madison, IL. |

Notes: Photo from 1993 NHRA Springnationals, Columbus, Ohio. Gary was in Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.40/270.02 qualified #13; in round one, he picked up to 5.25/275.65, but it came at a loss as Al Hofmann beat him with a 5.24/268. He skipped the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis but was back on the NHRA tour for the Mopar Nationals at Englishtown. There he qualified #8 with a 5.21/281.42. He beat a troubled Dean Skuza in round one with a 5.79/197.36. He lost to eventual winner John Force in round two. Best times of 5.214/284.53 at Englishtown and Indy, respectively. |

Notes: Won NHRA Winternats in 1992 (fifth race on nitro). Photo from 1992 Winternationals. Jim drove Jim West's car and his own in 1992. We need to confirm which car ran which event. Check DragStats for best times after this is determined. | Jim qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.23/275.73. He went on to win the event by running steady 5.2's and then taking on John Force in the final. His final round 5.26/273.80, beat Force's 5.32/275. At NHRA's second race of the season, the Arizona Nationals, Jim qualified #2 with a 5.28/271.90. A first-round 5.32/268.41 beat Gary Clapshaw, but he slowed to a 5.40/268.17 in round two that lost to Gary Densham's holeshot aided 5.43/267. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Jim again qualified well, ripping off a 5.22/272.72 for the #2 spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Caminito in the first round. Jim made it into another final round at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.25/275.81, and in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.02/167.09 but still won when Caminito smoked his tires even worse to a 6.69/140. In round two, he improved to a 5.20/279.85 to beat Paul Smith. In the semifinals, another consistent 5.22/270.51 beat Gary Bolger's 5.27/273 to advance into the final. Once again, he faced Force in the final, but their roles were reversed from the Winternationals. Here John set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.15/289 in the final to stop Jim's 5.27/275.39. These runs were all made with Epler's own car. Set Top Speed at Denver at 273.72. |

Notes: Blake also raced at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. Jim was at Maple Grove in September for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He ran a career-best 5.227/284.45 to qualify #5. The old Daytona body cracked on the pass and needed to be patched before his first-round race against Gary Bolger. In their race, Jim got out first, but the car suddenly moved towards the wall. Blake backed out of it but then noticed that Bolger was smoking the tires. Gary shut down while Jim got back on it and almost caught Bolger. Gary's 5.744/192.30 advanced. Blake's ride wasn't over; he flew through the traps at 5.773/245.63 and then could not get it stopped. He went off the end of the track. Jim also ran 5.337/280.54 at the Chief Auto Parts Nationals. Did he run 284.64 away from the NHRA circuit this year? |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Chuck qualified #6 for the show and in the first round, beat Ron Sutherland with a 5.65/266.11. He picked up to a 5.55/260.34 in round two, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.41/253. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #13 and lost in the first round. Things didn't look much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals where his 5.55 qualified on the "bump" spot. But he got around low qualified Jim White and in round two his 10.66/71.63 advanced when Richard Hartman broke. In the semifinals, he ran 5.40/267.61, but lost to eventual winner Force's 5.32/270. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals where Chuck qualified #9. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. |

Notes: Started the year in Permatex livery. Changed to Fast Orange. First career NHRA final round at Memphis, TN '92. Curt Swartz photo from Bristol, TN, 1992. | Whit qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.39/264.78. He could not run in eliminations, and the first alternate, Mark Sievers, took his place in the field. A 5.56/261.24 qualified #14 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. In the first round, a troubled 6.67/147.14 got around an equally troubled Dale Pulde. He lost to Richard Hartman in round two. Houston held the third NHRA event of the season, the Supernationals, where Bazemore ran 5.37/263.92 to qualify #11. An off pace 5.78/178.42 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.72/193. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals on March 15. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 5.82/233.10. In the first round, he and Hoover ran 5.62 (Whit at 255.10), with Tom winning. |

Notes: After Don Prudhomme and Kenny Bernstein switched to Top Fuel for the '90 season, everyone expected this team to dominate. Things didn't work out that way. Mark started '90 by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.29/279.41 (Top Speed). He lost to Art Hendey in the first round. At Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Mark's 5.40/275.06 qualified #8. In the first round, he had a close race with Ed McCulloch that saw his 5.37/277.77 defeat Ed's 5.37/265. In round two, another 5.37 at 275.48 beat K.C. Spurlock's slightly quicker 5.36/276. Both he and opponent Bruce Larson had problems in their semifinal race, but Larson's tire-smoking 6.43/147 beat Oswald, who shut down to a 10.97/71.03. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals in Texas. Mark qualified #4 with a 5.32/282.22 (Top Speed). An even better 5.30/278.37 in the first round, beat Gary Densham, and he got a solo in round two when Tom Hoover could not show. Mark ran a wheelstanding 7.29 to advance. In the semifinals, his 5.41/283.10 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.28/278. The team's next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.36/276.41 qualified #4, and a 5.63/231.24 in the opening round beat Frank Kramberger's 5.68/261. But Oswald lost to eventual winner McCulloch in round two. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car show; his 5.35/278.12 (Top Speed) qualified #6. His times were not great, but Oswald made it into the final. He started by running 5.48/272.23 in the opening round to beat Jim White in the "Hawaiian." Both he and Larson smoked the tires in the semifinal, with Mark's 5.62/267.69 coming out on top over Bruce's 5.86/247. He faced John Force in the final, and the two put on a great race as both ran 5.43 (Oswald at 277.26), but Force crossed the stripe first for the victory. Atlanta was a race Oswald would rather forget. The car kept dropping cylinders on every pass. He "only" qualified #14 with a 5.64/277.34, and he was out after the first round as McCulloch's 5.35/267 beat his 5.48/268.81 and went on to win. But as bad as Atlanta had been, Memphis was the exact opposite. Mark qualified #7 with a 5.36/281.16, beating Johnny West in the first round. He had a close race with Spurlock in round two, where both ran 5.37 (Oswald at 278), but Mark crossed the line first. A 5.40/265 in the semifinals stopped Larson's 5.50, and Oswald found himself in the final against McCulloch. He got some payback from the last couple of losses to the "Ace" by running a 5.42/279.15 in the final over Ed's 5.47/265. Baton Rouge was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Cajun Nationals. Oswald qualified #3 with a 5.43/273.14. He beat Del Denton in the first round, and despite smoking the tires to a 6.85/145 in round two, he won when Neely fouled. But he smoked the tires once again in the semifinals and lost to Richard Hartman. He also made it as far as the semifinals at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #6 with a 5.44/272.06 and, in round one, beat Hartman's 5.52/260 with another 5.44 at 274.55. Larson fouled against him in round two, and Mark advanced with a 5.45/274.30. But in the semifinals, Oswald fouled against White. The team then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where Mark's 5.45/268.97 qualified #4. Things went fairly well for the team. A 5.49 in the opening round beat Al Hofmann, and a second-round 5.47/267 beat Tom Hoover. Mark's driving in the semifinal got the car into the final as his 5.43/268.41 defeated Larson's 5.42/269. Oswald even had lane choice over Force for their final round meeting, but Mark had problems and shut down to 10.92/70.15 while Force won with a 5.40/267. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: At Pomona for the Winternationals, Mark didn't qualify all that well with a 5.44/269.13 fitting in the #11 spot. He improved to a first-round 5.34/274.05 over Ed McCulloch, but in the second round, he lost to Chris Lane's 7.17/246 to Mark's 7.50/170.71 in a troubled run for both drivers. He qualified much better at the next NHRA race, the Supernationals, where a 5.29/272.23 put him in the #3 spot. Mark made it into the semifinals before smoking the tires and losing to Bruce Larson. At the Gatornationals, the team again qualified #3 with a 5.34/271.41 getting the spot. Unfortunately, they lost to Art Hendey in the second round. A 5.55/260.86 qualified in the dreaded #9 position at the Southern Nationals setting up a first-round matchup against low qualifier Larson. Bruce triumphed over Oswald in that race. By the fifth race of the season, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, the team was getting antsy to win. A 5.36/275.06 qualified #4, and Mark ran 5.38 over Eric Reed in the first round. In the second round, he got a break when John Force broke at half-track and a 5.40/259 advanced into the semifinals to meet Don Prudhomme. In that race, a 5.41/272 beat Prudhomme's quicker 5.39, and the "Candies and Hughes" car was in its first final of '89. All good things come to an end, and in the final against Kenny Bernstein, the Probe broke, giving Kenny a single for the win. It was off to the Cajun Nationals on May 28 for the sixth stop on the NHRA tour. A 5.44/266.66 qualified #2 just behind Prudhomme. Mark beat a tire-smoking Force in the first round with a 5.52/264. A second-round 5.57 lost to McCulloch's 5.46. It was then off to National Trail for the Springnationals, where Mark qualified #5 with a 5.34/271.49. An even better 5.32 in the first round beat Frank Kramberger, but the car broke after his burnout against Tom Hoover in the second round. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. Oswald ran 5.51/253.95 to qualify #2. He beat R.C Sherman in the first round, with a 5.49/246.23 and a second-round 5.60/256.55 beat Force's 5.63/263. In the semi's, another 5.60/238.98 beat Hendey and set up another final round matchup against Bernstein. Oswald didn't break this time, but his 5.54/258.69 just lost to Kenny's 5.51/265. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, a 5.36 qualified #4. He beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, but against Don Gay Jr. in round two, the Probe broke. It was beginning to become a long winless season for the team when they rolled into Denver for the Mile High Nationals. They qualified #3 with a 5.59/253.09 and beat Gay Jr. in the first round and in round two a 5.64/249 beat Force's 5.70. In the semifinals against Bernstein, Mark beat him with a track record 5.50 at 258, putting himself in the final against Larson. In the final, Oswald ran a 5.62 but lost it on the starting line to Bruce's slower 5.66. The eleventh race of the season was the California Nationals on July 30. Once again, the team made it to the finals. A 5.40/274.47 qualified #4. He beat Mike Dunn in the first round, and in the second round, both he and Hendey smoked the tires with Oswald's 6.49/239.61 coming out on top. Mark pulled a driving job on McCulloch in the semifinals beating Ed's 5.47/270 with a 5.49/267.85. In the final, he ran Prudhomme, who had set Low ET and Top Speed (5.30/276.49). Mark picked it up in the final to a 5.36/274.72 but still lost to the "Snake's" 5.32/272. It was the fourth runner-up finish of the year for the team. The tour continued to Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Mark qualified #8 with a 5.43/266.27 but lost to R.C. Sherman in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the next event, the Northstar Nationals. A 5.46/263.23 qualified #7. In the first round, the Probe spun the tires to a 6.12/248.07 and lost to Larry Camenzind's 5.94/212. The bad luck continued right into Indy for the US Nationals. The team qualified #5 with a 5.33/272.06, but upstart Scott Kalitta beat them in the first round. After losing in the first round at the last three events, the team rebounded somewhat at the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. Mark qualified #2 with a 5.21/283.10. A 5.29/265.09 advanced when Tom Hoover fouled in the first round. In round two, he backed up his qualifying marks for both ends of the NHRA record when he beat Tony McCallum with a 5.23/279.50. Unfortunately, Mark smoked the tires to a shut-off 8.86/87.20 loss to Force's 5.34/276 in the semifinals. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals, a 5.19/280.19 (Top Speed) qualified #3. Oswald beat Mike Dunn in the first round, with a 5.24 and a second-round 5.29/273.39 beat Al Hofmann in round two. Mark finally got one back from Larson in the semifinal when his 5.23/281.60 beat Bruce's close 5.24/274. In the final, he met Prudhomme, and while Don blasted to a 5.26/269 victory, Mark smoked the tires to another runner-up finish. The team got its first #1 qualifying position of the year at the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway with a 5.41 (Low ET) doing the deed. Things looked rosy until Mike Dunn put them on the trailer in the first round. It was back to Pomona for the season-ending World Finals, where a 5.28 (Low ET) at 279.41 got their second pole of the year. In the first round, he beat Hoover with a new NHRA Top Speed record of 283.28, but he ended his season in the next round against McCulloch when Mark spun the tires and lost to Ed's 5.56/264. Also, set the record at 5.214 at Maple Grove 9/89 and 5.298/283.10 National Records at 89 Supernationals. The 283.28 National Record was the fastest NHRA speed of the decade (second only to Scott Kalitta's 286.62 at IHRA Ennis 1988). Also, great 5.232 at 89 Chiefs was part of the quickest side-by-side pass (Bruce Larson 5.247). Also, 281.60 at Chiefs was half of the fastest side-by-side pass (Larson 274.72). Mark Oswald and the "Candies and Hughes" team had a good season in '89 despite finishing the season fourth in points. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: Gary started his season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.24/271.65. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. The team had trouble at the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, and Gary's best of 6.13/198.89 failed to make the field. Things were much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where a 5.32/251.80 qualified #9. A 5.34/264.78 in the first round, lost to Gordie Bonin's 5.21/289. Bolger had a good showing at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #13 with a 5.41/264.86. A first-round 5.35/262.54 beat Pulde's 5.82/240. In round two, a 5.32/268.57 took out Whit Bazemore's 5.50/209. Unfortunately, he spun the tires in the semifinals and lost to Al Hofmann's 5.17/284. At the NHRA Winston Invitational, Gary had some good luck/bad luck going on. First, he failed to qualify for the eight-car show running a best of 5.54/264.08 for the first alternate. Then Bazemore blew an engine in his already qualified car, and the resulting fire kept him out of eliminations. Bolger took his place in the field and then promptly smoked his tires in his first-round race against Hofmann. Atlanta was NHRA's next stop for the Southern Nationals at the end of April. Gary qualified #11 with a 5.34/272.39. He beat a tire-smoking Del Worsham in the first round with a 5.41/268.89. In round two, his 5.40/264.47 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.28/269. Gary followed the NHRA tour to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, where his 5.63/257.65 qualified #14. He improved to 5.39/264.39 in the first round to beat Hofmann's 5.50/269, but the car hurt some parts, and Bolger could not make his second-round race against Hoover. It was then on to Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals. A 5.31/269.05 qualified #12, but a better 5.29/266.19 in the first round lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.14/277. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Gary qualified #12 with a 5.36/269.29. A 5.41/250.62 in the first round, lost to Hofmann's 5.30/280. Shortly after that, he was at Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals. He qualified #14 at 5.54/241.61, and a 5.66/237.21 fell to Hofmann's 5.33/281 in the first round. On July 10, he was at Martin, Michigan, for a four-car show. He lost to Bazemore in the final. At Denver, for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Gary ran 5.61/247.18 to qualify #10. In round one, his 5.68/235.97 lost to John Force's 5.45/266. The following week, the team was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. Bolger's 5.51/235.41 qualified #12, and in the first round, he lost a blower belt, and his 5.55/214.38 fell to Etchell's 5.47/270. The next stop was in Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. A 5.30/262.69 qualified #12, and this time his 5.34/268.73 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.21/284 in round one. DNQ for "main show" at Indy. Gary was 18th overall with a best of 5.35/264.00. Qualified 6th for Big Bud Shootout. Lost to Chuck Etchells in round one. Rick Howard photo from 1993 US Nats (Big Bud Shootout), Indy. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. Won Southern Nationals at 21 years of age. As of 2016, still the youngest nitro funny car winner in NHRA history. Was the NHRA Rookie of the Year for 1991. Had a great season. Also painted as The Screamer this year. |

Notes: Gary qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.337/276.49. Unfortunately, the car broke in the first round against eventual winner K.C. Spurlock. He went to Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals but was the second alternate with a 5.704/253.02 best. He qualified #10 at Houston Spring at 5.286/279.24 and went to the semifinals. Gary qualified #15 at the Gators at 5.322/272.47 but lost to John Force in round one. He qualified #14 at Atlanta at 5.361/252.31 and went two rounds. Gary qualified #11 at Atlanta at 5.360/280.46 and improved to 5.344/280.11 in a round one win over Gary Bolger. He beat Jim Epler in round two with a 5.472/274.72 before losing round three to Gordie Bonin. Gary qualified #12 at the Mopar Parts Nationals at 5.328 but lost in round one. He also qualified #12 at Columbus (5.366/274.72) and lost in round one, again. He ran 5.374/272.14 in qualifying #11 at Topeka but lost to Kenji Okazaki in round one. Gary also had similar results at Bandimere (5.749/246.44) and Sonoma (5.359/270.59). He ran 5.285/272.97 to qualify #14 at Seattle, but his round one losses continued. But Gary went all the way to the finals at Brainerd in August, losing to John Force there with best times of 5.335/277.94. He was a disappointing DNQ at Indy (5.641/207.37) but ran 5.317/275.31 at Maple Grove to qualify #9. Gary Bolger got a measure of revenge with a first-round win. He went 5.270/283.01 (#10) at Topeka Fall but did not get past round one again. The same thing happened at the Chief Auto Parts Nationals, although Gary went 5.258 to qualify. He also made the field at the World Finals with a 5.281/282.48 but fell in round one, again. All year, it was a gutsy performance as the independent mixed it up with the big boys. |

Notes: After ending the '93 season with a blower explosion that wrecked his Cutlass body at the NHRA World Finals, Caminito hoped for better luck in '94. The season didn't start so well. Jerry attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.55/254.38 was good for the third alternate. He made the field at the NHRA Quality Care Nationals in Arizona, where his 5.36/272.06 qualified #14. Jerry improved to a 5.343/282.92 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat K.C. Spurlock's 5.30/285. He then went to Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals and failed to qualify. That also happened at the Gatornationals, where his best of 5.61/198.76 was good for the fourth alternate. Things were bad; Jerry was out of money and even had to borrow money for his mortgage. He parked his Funny Car. But he decided to go to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. He ran 5.39 on his first qualifying attempt, came back out Saturday, and ran 5.35/274.80 to qualify #13. Unfortunately, on that run, he lost a clutch. He borrowed parts from other racers and pieced the clutch back together for eliminations. Chuck Etchells smoked the tires in the first round, and Jerry's 5.38/258.84 advanced. In round two, he got out on Jim Epler and led almost all the way. He didn't see Epler, so he clicked it off early (5.56/211.16) for fear of losing the clutch again. Jim roared past just before the finish line to win with a 5.49/263. Caminito earned $8,000 for his efforts. But things would get a lot worse. He went to Memphis in May for the Mid-South Nationals. Jerry ran 5.40/279.76 in qualifying, which was good enough for the #13 spot in the field. He came back out for another pass and lost control of the car. He crashed head-on into the guardrail at 275 mph. Caminito was seriously injured. He had a collapsed lung, broken ribs, and a fractured leg. 1986 McKinney chassis. |

Notes: The team raced at both Pomona races and Las Vegas. DNQ'd each time but ran solid passes. Ran 5.35/282 at the Winters, 5.348/282 at Las Vegas, and then a nice 5.090/282 at the finals. |

Notes: Wyatt ran two NHRA national events in 2000. We are listing those times with this car, although he ran his own machine at AHRA Spokane. We need to confirm which car ran which numbers. Wyatt was the eighth alternate at the Pomona Winters at 5.614/215.48. He also was the eighth alternate at Las Vegas at 5.339/282.78. 1999 Photo |
