Notes: Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.48/272.14 qualified #7. He beat Mark Oswald in the first round, with a 5.50/274.55 and a second-round 5.45/273.63 beat Jim White's 5.50/272 in the "Hawaiian." But in the semifinals, his 5.41/273.22 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.31/272. He qualified #3 with a 5.33/274.64 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, and an opening-round 5.27/282.57 stopped Jim Murphy. But he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Del Worsham. He ran really well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. A 5.28/282.39 qualified #3, and he beat Gary Densham in round one. In round two, Mike Dunn's 5.46/251 lost to Ed's 5.30/278.29. He fell off to 5.40/276.32 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Oswald. He faced Force in the final for the money. Unfortunately, McCulloch smoked the tires and shut off to 6.11/159.37 while John picked up the win with a 5.21/278. Ed continued to qualify well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, a 5.29/272.06 got the #3 spot. He beat Gary Bolger in round one, with a 5.40/270.43, but he lost to Tom Hoover in the second round. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Once again, Ed qualified #3, this time with a 5.31/276.24. He beat Freddie Neely in round one before smoking the tires and losing to White in round two. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Ed slipped to #4 in qualifying with a 5.32/276.07. In the first round, Paula Martin lost an engine against him, and Ed advanced with a 5.54/256.70. A second round 5.52/267.77 beat Al Hofmann. But 5.5s were not going to get the job done, and, in the semifinal, Ed's 5.56/273.05 lost to Hoover's 5.48. The seventh race of the season was the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. McCulloch returned to his #3 qualifying spot with a 5.34/272.06. He beat Murphy in round one, with a 5.48/271.73, but a round two 5.41/259.44 lost to Force's 5.35/267. He followed the tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he "only" qualified #7 with a 5.48/265.01. In the opening round, he beat Martin's 5.69/245 with a 5.57/258.69, but he lost to eventual winner White in round two. He then made a stop at Kansas City International for its Summernationals. Ed set Low ET there at 5.62, and he reached the final against Force. The two had a good race, but John's 5.68/261 beat Ed's late leaving 5.65/257.50. Back on the NHRA trail at Englishtown for the Summernationals. McCulloch ran 5.26/271.82 to qualify #4. He stopped Martin again in round one, with a 5.40/266.58. But a second-round 5.47/263.08 lost to Worsham's 5.34/272. Worsham would go on to win the race. McCulloch was way overdue for a win. It almost came at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.43. His speed on the run was 257.80. He beat rookie Len Seroka in round one, with a 5.82/252.31, and a second-round 5.55/256.19 beat Densham's 5.69/218. In the semifinals, his 5.59/257.14 trailered Hofmann at 5.76/253. This put Ed in his second NHRA final of the year. He faced Mike Dunn, who had been running just about a tenth quicker than Ed was throughout eliminations. Sure enough, Mike's 5.47/257 got the victory over Ed, who tried to make up the difference and fouled away a 5.54/255.82. Ed's best NHRA times were 5.237 from Maple Grove and the 282.57 from Phoenix.

Notes: Won IHRA Springnationals Bristol 1990. | K.C. Spurlock was at the Texas Motorplex in January making his licensing runs. He ran 5.56/223 while getting the license. He then went to Pomona and showed 'em how it's done. He qualified last with a 5.57/255.60. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier John Force. John probably thought he had K.C. covered easily, but Spurlock ran 5.32/272.14 to trailer Force's 5.42/278. In round two, a 5.37/263.00 beat Ray Sherman's 5.61/270, and in the semifinals, his 5.39/276.49 beat Bruce Larson's 5.54/267. Everyone was now looking at this guy when he faced veteran Ed McCulloch in the final. Ed had run as quick as 5.27 in the first round, but his semifinal win came with only a 5.89. Spurlock's 5.78/186.64 won in the final over McCulloch, who smoked the tires and shut off. It was quite the Funny Car debut for K.C. Of course, everyone wondered if it was just a flash in the pan when the teams showed up at Firebird for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. But Spurlock continued to impress, running 5.30/276.15 for the "pole." He beat Gary Densham in the opening round before losing to Mark Oswald's 5.37/275 in round two with a quicker 5.36/276.32. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals early in March. Spurlock's 5.45/269.78 qualified #7 and an improved 5.40/277.00 in the opening round beat Jim Murphy. But an even stronger 5.34/275.48 in round two lost to Larson's 5.31/265. He made it into another final at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals at Gainesville. He qualified #3 with a 5.36/270.64, and in round one, his 5.39/266.11 advanced when Rune Fjeld shut off with tire shake. Another 5.39 at 268 beat Jim Dunn in round two, and in the semifinals, Force overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Spurlock moved on with a 5.51/259. Once again, he was up against McCulloch in an NHRA final, but this time the "Ace" came through for the win. His 5.33/267 beat Spurlock's 5.40/273 runner-up effort. Things didn't go well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.37/275.90, but he blew it after Al Hofmann fouled against him in the first round. K.C. stayed in it, got out of shape, and crossed the centerline, disqualifying himself. K.C.'s best times this year were a 5.199 low qualifying and Low ET effort at Englishtown and 282.13 at Memphis.

Notes: Wyatt ran 5.513/247.11 in this car at Indy (8th alternate). He ran 5.318/282.01 at the World Finals. Assuming that is in this car. Please advise if not. Earlier in the year, Wyatt was the 5th alternate at NHRA Phoenix with a 10.969/71.86 shutoff. Assuming that was this car, too.

Notes: After a great '89 season that saw them win the NHRA Funny Car Championship, Larson and crew chief Maynard Yingst put forth another strong effort in '90. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.37/273.97 qualified #4. Bruce improved to a 5.34/277.43 in the first round to beat Al Hofmann, and a further improving 5.31/271.16 in round two stopped Scott Kalitta's 5.44/250. But in the semifinals, an off-pace 5.54/267.06 lost to K.C. Spurlock's 5.39/276. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Larson qualified #5 with a 5.34/273.14. He set a track record 5.24 in the first round, while beating Johnny West. In the second round, he ran a 5.26/272.72 solo when Glenn Mikres broke and could not run. In the semifinals, he met Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" Probe. Both drivers had problems, and Larson recovered first to win with a 6.43/147.05 over Mark's 10.97/71. In the final, he again had problems and shut off to 13.18, while Dale Pulde won a 5.37. He got into the final at the next NHRA event as well, the Supernationals at Houston. Bruce qualified #2 with a 5.30/277.69. He got lucky in round one, where his 6.63/186.11 advanced over a troubled Al Hofmann. In round two, he picked up the pace to a 5.31/265.72 to stop Spurlock's 5.34/275. Ed McCulloch smoked the tires against him in the semifinals and his 5.32/268.97 advanced into the finals. There, he ran John Force. Unfortunately, Larson smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.70-98.72, while Force won with a 5.36/272. The Gatornationals at Gainesville was the next stop on the NHRA tour. Bruce ran 5.48/271.00 to qualify #8. He beat Richard Hartman in the first round, while a strong 5.28/272 beat Mikres in round two. He got out of shape and shut off in the semifinals, losing to McCulloch's 5.44/265. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Larson set a track record of 280.89 in qualifying. The accompanying ET of 5.24 qualified #2. He lost a motor in the first round, but his 5.26/273 still beat Doc Halladay. After putting in a new bullet, a 5.28/269 in round two beat Jerry Caminito. But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner McCulloch. The Mid-South Nationals at Memphis were next on the NHRA schedule. A 5.28 qualified #3 in the field. Larson lasted until the semifinals before his 5.50 lost to Oswald's 5.40. At Baton Rouge, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 5.47/273.63 qualified #5. He beat Tim Grose in the first round before losing a blower and the race to McCulloch in round two. Tim Richards gave tuning tips. Photo from the 1990 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Notes: Mark drove this car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.310/280.63. In the first round, both he and his opponent Mark Sievers smoked the tires, and Oswald's 7.469/155.84 lost to Sievers' 6.93/213. The "In-N-Out" crew then ran the car at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. A 5.357/274.72 qualified #5. Once again, he lost in the first round, this time to Johnny West, 5.59/267 to 6.817/137.88. They then went to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where Mark qualified the car #3 with a 5.266/281.60. But the first-round "blues" got him when he lost to Richard Hartman, 5.47/277 to 7.607/113.20. The team went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and qualified #2 with a 5.55/226.47, but the jinx persisted, and his first-round 5.84/243.50 lost to Freddie Neely's 5.81/251. Mark drove the In-n-Out car & Petosa Bros. Daytona, switching back & forth for 1992. He was in the Daytona at Gainesville, and we think he drove that car at all remaining NHRA national event appearances (need confirmation). The team came out with a new body during IHRA Springnationals but blew it off on its first run, which was also its last run. Fans carried off large portions of it as souvenirs. Notes: Dominic qualified #7 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.45/263.64. In the opening round, his 5.48/258.76 lost to Scott Kalitta's 5.46/264. Shortly after that (July 1), he was at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals. Thirteen FCs showed up and attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Santucci's 5.91/254.50 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, his opponent, low qualifier Jerry Caminito broke, and Dominic's tire-shaking 5.99/253.74 advanced. Richard Hartman smoked the tires against him in the semi-final, and Santucci ran 5.68/262.26 to win. He faced Chuck Etchells in the final, and Santucci set both Low ET and Top Speed to win at 5.65/263.79. The speed was also a new track record. The following week, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.44/272.64 qualified #10. He lost to eventual winner Etchells in the first round. He was at Atco Raceway in August for the IHRA Eastern Nationals. In the first round, he ran Carl Ruth, who was debuting his new '56 Ford. Dominic's 5.47/270.04 beat Ruth's 6.05. He broke against Etchells in the semi-final. Also in August, Dominic won the Polaroid US All-Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown, defeating Richard Hartman in the final. He also ran well at Maple Grove in September for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where he qualified #9 at 5.36/271.73. But once again, Etchells stopped him in round one. A week later (September 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships. He qualified second, and in round one, his 5.87/217.77 took out Bobby Lagana. He lost to Freddie Neely in the semi-final. Dom also ran 280 at Epping on September 9 and 273.88. He won the IHRA Empire Nationals at Empire International Raceway in 1990.

Notes: Mike and Joe had a good season in '89. It started at the Winternationals, where Mike qualified #2 with a 5.34/279.85 (Top Speed). He had a bit of a snooze in the first round, and his 5.42/269.13 lost to Jim White's 5.46/258. They went on to the Supernationals, where they lost in the first round once again. At the Gatornationals, Mike set track records of 5.28/280.19 in qualifying #1, but for the third straight race, they lost in round one, this time to R.C. Sherman. Things went much better in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.48/266.35 qualified #5. In the first two rounds, he beat Tony McCallum and low qualifier Bruce Larson. In the semifinal, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.53 with a 5.48/263.15. In the final, he met newcomer Eric Reed. Reed smoked the tires, and Dunn claimed his first win of the season with a 5.60/264.08. The next event on the schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Mike used a 5.31/280.98 (Top Speed) qualified #2. He lost to Art Hendey in round one. Mike took his second win at the Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.44/272.23 (Top Speed). He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, and in the second round, he got a solo because his competition, Whit Bazemore, was unable to run. Both he and Prudhomme smoked the tires in the semifinal, but Mike's 5.83/254 came out on top. In the final, he faced John Martin, but Martin broke, and Dunn's 5.63/268.25 got the victory. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals. Mike qualified #4 with a 5.33/274.97. He beat Martin in the first round. In the second round, both he and Chuck Etchells smoked the tires, and Chuck got the win. Mike and the Joe Pisano team did not run in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were back on tour for the next NHRA event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. Dunn ran 5.44 to qualify #10, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in round one. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.68/255.46 qualified #5 in the thin air. He beat Jim Murphy in round one before losing to Kenny Bernstein's 5.62 with a 5.65 in round two. At Sonoma at the end of July for the NHRA California Nationals, Mike qualified #12 with a 5.59/265.33 but lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. Also ran 5.397 at the 1989 US Nationals. The car was deep PURPLE. The best NHRA National Event times were the 5.281/280.98. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Ed also ran 5.188 that same day. The 5.132 was not bettered until March 1992. This photo from Columbus 1988. Confirmed 277.17 at Memphis 89. We need to confirm the Ennis 280.89. | Ed started the '89 season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.36/276.58. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. At the next event, the NHRA Supernationals at Houston, he ran a 5.34/272.89 to qualify #7. Once again Ed got taken out by Oswald, but this time it was in round two where Mark's 5.38 nipped McCulloch's 5.40. He had some luck on his side at the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.39/268.89 qualified #5, but that was the best he ran at Gainesville. He beat a tire smoking Scott Kalitta in the first round, and a second round 6.47 beat a tire smoking R.C. Sherman. In the semifinal, a 9.76/68 mph run advanced when Art Hendey broke on the line. In the final, Ed took the victory with a 19.70-70.94 beat Bruce Larson fouled. On April 23 he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.45/270.75 qualified #3, but he lost to Sherman in the first round. From there it was off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where he ran a 5.41/274.97 to qualify #7. He beat Paul Smith in the first round, and a 5.55 took out Tony McCallum's 5.60 in round two. But in the semifinal, he shut off to a 10.00 loss to Kenny Bernstein. He made it into the semifinals of the next event as well, the NHRA Cajun Nationals. There he qualified #6 with a 5.55/268.73. He got revenge on Oswald in round two, beating him with a 5.46/269 to Mark's 5.57. But in the semifinal, John Martin beat Ed. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, and while he didn't make the final, he did set Low ET at 5.45. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.36/269.70, but he lost to Johnny West in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #4 with a 5.52/265.17, but a first-round 6.34/163 lost to Hendey's 5.63/260. McCulloch made the final at the NHRA Summernationals in July. A 5.30 qualified #2. He beat Mike Dunn in the first round, and a 5.56/268 beat Larson's quicker 5.50 in round two. In the semifinals, a 5.64/262 beat a tire smoking Don Gay Jr. In the final he ran Bernstein. A 5.50 by McCulloch came in second best to Kenny's 5.41. In the thin air of Denver, for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Ed ran 5.65/252.24 to qualify #4. He beat Don Prudhomme in the first round, and a 5.72/250 beat Tom Hoover in round two, but a semifinal 5.91 fell to Larson's 5.54. The eleventh race on the NHRA schedule was the California Nationals. A 5.38/275.31 qualified Ed #2. He made it into the semifinal before losing to Oswald's 5.49/267 with a quicker 5.47/270.92. The NHRA Seafair Nationals was the next race. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.35/274.39, but a first-round 5.98/222.82 lost to Jim Murphy. Ed hadn't won a race since March and the team was overdue. Things finally came together on August 20 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. McCulloch got his first pole of the year with a 5.42/267.53. He set a 5.37 track record at 270.27 in the first round, and a second round 5.45/270.02 beat Sherman's 5.51/263. In the semifinal, a 5.42/268.25 beat upstart Larry Camenzind, and for the win he faced off with Larson. It was Ed's driving that got the victory, as he pulled a holeshot and his 5.55/266.90 beat Bruce's quicker 5.51/264. After that, it was on to Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. A 5.35/275.90 qualified #6 and in round one, a 5.56/271.49 beat Jerry Caminito's 6.11/171. In round two, his 5.46/269.94 lost to Larson's 5.32/274. On September 17, Ed was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.28/274.39 and a 5.40/222 beat R.C. Sherman in the first round. But in round two, he was late off the line and his 5.30/271.57 finished behind Force's 5.34/275.

Notes: First 280 mph run in history. Also 5.48 at 273.14 at Ennis All Stars 4/87 (no records set at that event). Set national record at 270.43 at 87 Summernationals. Then at Indy, ran 278.89, but did not back it up. However, did run 274.64, which the 278.89 backed up for the record. Finally, reset national record at 280.72 at Chief Nats. Ran 279.93 at Ennis 10/87 to back up record. Set ET record at 5.443 at Chief Nats (but ran 5.405 in qualifying). Duplicated 280.72 at World Finals (at 5.419). Photo from Indy 1987. | Mike was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #3 with a career best (to this point) 5.56/266.42. In the first round, he broke a blower pulley and slowed to 6.50/143.35 in a loss to Dale Pulde's 5.80/246.

Notes: Terry was the third alternate at the Gatornationals at 5.448/276.52. He was the first alternate at Englishtown at 5.280/280.66. Terry qualified #15 at Brainerd at 5.312/258.57. He lost to Ron Capps in round one, but it was a great race. Capps put a one tenth of a second holeshot on Terry, but had troubles and barely held him off, 7.42/245 to 7.341/175.05! Notes: Photo from 1992 Winternationals. Richard qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.41/279.24. The speed was a career-best for him at the time. A first-round 5.51/249.51 lost to Jim Epler's 5.29/261. A 5.51/274.22 qualified #11 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, and in round one, he beat Del Worsham with a 5.43/276.58. He got past Whit Bazemore in round two with a 5.63/271.98. In the semifinals, he ran and beat Gary Densham's 5.88/254 with a 5.85/209.35 as both cars had traction problems. Hartman again went up in smoke in the final, and his 8.63/95.91 finished runner-up to Tom Hoover's 5.27/263. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he qualified #14 with a 5.51/274.30. He beat Mark Oswald in the first round, with a 5.47/277.69, but in the second round, he fouled away a 5.48/241.67 to lose to Hoover's 5.35/193.

Notes: Everyone expected this car to win the NHRA Funny Car Championship in '89. After winning the championship the previous four years, it was a little disappointing how the season went for Kenny. It started at Pomona for the Winternationals. Kenny qualified way down the ladder in the #13 spot with a 5.47/266.74. He improved to a 5.42/264.16 in the first round to beat Dale Pulde. In round two, a consistent 5.43/269.21 beat Tom Hoover. In the semifinal, he beat Chris Lane with a 5.48/265.33. In the final, he met who was soon to be his nemesis, Bruce Larson. And sure enough, Larson scored the win over Bernstein. The next event on the NHRA schedule was the Supernationals. Kenny qualified #4 with a 5.30/270.27 but broke a rear end in the second round and lost to Art Hendey. The Gatornationals was the next stop; a 5.39/269.70 qualified #6. He lost to Larson in the second round. At the fourth race of the year, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Bernstein qualified #4 with a 5.47/266.27, but once again, he lost in the second round, this time to Eric Reed. He looked like the Bernstein of old at the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #1 with a 5.25 (Low ET) at 280.11. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round and then got a couple of lucky breaks when, in round two, both he and Hoover smoked the tires, but Kenny's 6.45/232 held on for the win. In the semifinals, he ran a 5.42/270 to win over Ed McCulloch, who shut off to a 10.00. In the final, he ran Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Probe, and once again, he had a little luck when Oswald broke, and Bernstein scored his first victory of the season. The next race was the Cajun Nationals. Kenny used a 5.50/266.50 to qualify #4. In the first round against John Martin, the car broke on the burnout, giving Martin an easy single. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals at National Trail. Bernstein qualified #3 with a 5.33/269.13. He beat Kalitta in the first round with another 5.33 but smoked the tires and lost to Jim White in round two. A strong performance was turned in at the Grandnationals in Canada. Kenny set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.44/265.72. In the first round, both he and Johnny West had problems, and both ran 5.60, West at 253 and Bernstein at 212.31, but the Buick still won the race. A 5.47/270.92 (Top Speed) beat Hoover's 5.68 in round two. In the semifinals, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.73/231 with a 5.48/254.47. Once again, he met with Oswald in the final, and the results were the same, with Kenny's 5.51/265.72 beating Oswald's close 5.54/258. He didn't have to wait long for his third victory of the year as it came at the next event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #3 with a 5.35, beat Hendey in the first round, and John Force in the second with a 5.36/272. He ran a solo 5.40/270 in the semifinals when Prudhomme broke just off the line. In the final, he was paired with McCulloch, and Kenny ran a 5.41 to win over Ed's 5.50. He was a favorite to win when the teams headed to Denver for the Mile High Nationals. He didn't disappoint in qualifying when his 5.53/263.38 (Top Speed) got the pole. He beat Hendey in the first round, and a 5.62/254 beat Mike Dunn's close 5.65 in round two. But in the semifinals, Oswald put him away with a track record 5.50. The California Nationals was next, and again Kenny qualified well with a 5.39/273.88, taking the #3 spot. Unfortunately, he and Tony McCallum ran 5.52 in the first round, with Tony winning. The next race was the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. Bernstein qualified #4 with a 5.34/278.89 (Top Speed). He beat Hendey's 5.57/260 in the first round with a 5.35/276.66. In round two, a 5.41/248.23 beat R.C. Sherman, and in the semifinals, he took a big win over Prudhomme with a 5.34/276.07, beating the "Snake's" 5.40/263. In the final, he met Larson, and despite running quicker and faster with 5.37/273.22 times, he lost to Larson's holeshot 5.40/271. At the Northstar Nationals, a 5.43/266.11 qualified #2. When McCallum broke, he ran an easy 11.70/72.42 in the first round. But in round two against Larson, Kenny ran even worse when he smoked the tires to a 14.35/70.56 to lose to Bruce's 5.51/271. Kenny and Dale probably thought things couldn't get worse when they went to Indy for the US Nationals. A 5.37/276.75 qualified #8 there, but he lost to Hoover in round one. They went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals and set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.35/264.71. Kenny got past a fouling Gary Bolger in the first round, and in the semifinals, he ran a 5.64/216.35 that beat Doc Halladay's quicker 5.61. In the final, he met the second qualifier, R.C. Sherman, who beat him with a 5.50 to the "Budweiser King's" 5.54. On September 10, he was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. A 5.51/264.41 qualified #2. He smoked the tires to a 6.67 in the first round but still beat Halladay. A 5.54/272 beat Johnny West's 5.98/244 in the semifinals. Kenny got his first IHRA victory of the year when he stopped a tire-smoking Darrell Amberson in the final with a 5.56/273.53. A week later (September 17), he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He broke 280 in qualifying with a 5.25/280.37 (#3). Another 5.25 at 279.06 beat a fouling Scott Kalitta in the first round, but in round two, he smoked the tires in a 6.80/141.17 loss to Larson's 5.30/276. He also lost in the second round at Topeka for the NHRA Heartland Nationals. There, his 5.44 lost to Oswald's 5.34. The following week (October 8), he was at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.21/277.60. Another 5.21 at 278.46 beat Hendey in the first round. A 5.24/277.43 advanced in round two when Tony McCallum broke, but in the semifinals against Prudhomme, he smoked the tires to a losing 9.29/79.33. The NHRA tour then went to Arizona for the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway. Kenny qualified #2 with a 5.48 at a track record 271.98. He beat Jim Dunn in round one, while a 5.49/267 in round two advanced when Jim White lost a blower on the line. In the semifinals, he slipped to a 5.56/268.17, losing to eventual winner Larson's 5.43/268. At the season-ending World Finals at Pomona, Bernstein did not end his Funny Car career as he would have liked. He qualified #4 with a 5.32/278.46, but in the first round, against Jerry Caminito, he lost with a 7.30/184.84. In the season-long NHRA points chase, he finished third behind Larson and Prudhomme. In the IHRA standings, he finished #7, even though he only ran two events. Some drivers would have loved to have seasons like that, but it was below his expectations for Kenny.
