Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Hoover entered the '89 season with a new carbon fiber body on his McKinney chassis. He continued to run the AFT clutch that had served him so well in late '88. His 82 year old father, George, continued to serve as crew chief. Tom started the '89 season by qualifying #9 with a 5.42/268.73 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He faced low qualifier John Force in the first round, and beat him with a 5.39/260.11 to Force's 5.46/275. In the second round, be lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the next event, the Supernationals at Houston, he qualified #10 with a 5.43/264.23 and once again, met Force in the first round. Again, Hoover stepped up with a 5.36 beating John in the first round, for the second straight race. Unfortunately, just like at the first event, Hoover lost in round two. This time, he smoked the tires and shut off, giving Scott Kalitta an easy (7.60/150) victory. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #10 with a 5.45/264.16 getting the spot. He lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.49/244.75. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round, but lost to Force in round two. It was on to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where a 5.36/264.78 qualified #5. He beat John Martin in the first round, but then smoked the tires in round two and lost to Bernstein. At the Cajun Nationals, he lost in the first round, after qualifying #11 with a 5.57/263.15. Things went much better at the Springnationals. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.44/252.66, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. In that race, Don overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover hustled (?) to a 5.67/183 win. In the second round, he faced Mark Oswald. Mark broke after his burnout and Tom ran a 12.00-67 for the win. In the semifinals, Jim White smoked the tires and a 5.55/242 got Tom into the final. His luck ran out in the final when Larson's 5.42/275 dropped the Firebird's smoky 6.79/135.89. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.54/256.77 qualified #5, and he beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.57/251.18. In the second round, Bernstein's 5.47/270 beat Tom's 5.68/211.29. The ninth race on the NHRA schedule was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Hoover ran a 5.38 to qualify #5, and he beat Etchells in the first round. In the second round, he got out of shape just off the line and lost to Prudhomme. His dad, George Hoover, showed that he could tune a car in the thin air of Denver for the next race, the Mile High Nationals. Tom ran a 5.76/248.61 in qualifying #8, even out qualifying Prudhomme. In the first round, be beat Gary Ritter, but in round two, he lost to Ed McCulloch. At the California Nationals, Tom qualified #10 with a 5.47/256.70. But once again, McCulloch got him, this time in the first round. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals, a 5.47/273.63 qualified #10. This time Prudhomme beat him in round one. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. Tom qualified #12 with a 5.66/261.55 and in the first round, he improved to a 5.54/265.48, but it wasn't enough to get around Prudhomme's 5.49/261. Hoover almost didn't make the field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He ran a best of 5.55/259.36 in qualifying and that just held for the "bump" spot. In all, he made four qualifying runs; the times were 5.72, 5.69, 5.55, and 5.58. In the first round, he improved to a 5.42/238.28 that beat Bernstein's tire smoking 7.80/111, but in the second round, he went into a wheelstand and shut off against Etchells. The following week (September 10), he was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. Tom qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 5.54/265.01, but in the first round, he blew a motor and lost to Johnny West. At Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, a 5.41/253.09 qualified #10. He fouled against Oswald in the first round.

Notes: Won emotional NHRA Ford Nats '92 (first NHRA national event win since 1979) just weeks after "Ma" Hoover passed away. Photo from 1992 US Nationals. | Hoover qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.42/273.72. He lost to John Force in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #9 with a 5.47/272.47. He picked up to a career best (to this point) of 5.26 at 273.05 in the first round, to beat Gary Bolger's 5.44/262. Another strong pass of 5.32/259.14 beat John Force's 5.46/271. In the semifinals, he beat Johnny West with a 5.34/265.87 to go into the final against Richard Hartman. Once again he made a strong run, clocking a 5.27/263.46 for his third career NHRA National event win over a tire smoking Hartman. It was Tom's first win since the '79 Winternationals, and it came just a month after his mother had passed away from heart disease. Hoover went on to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals where he ran 5.30/253.80 to qualify #6. A first-round 5.72/193.25 beat Whit Bazemore's 5.78/178. In round two, he advanced with a 5.35/238.98 when Hartman fouled. In the semifinals, his 5.78/183.18 lost to Gordon Mineo's 5.34/250. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #4 with a 5.79/228.42. He worked his way into the final by beating Whit Bazemore in the first round, (both ran 5.62, Tom at 261.32), and Paul Smith in the semifinals with a 5.58/260.19. In the final, he stopped Del Worsham for the victory with a 5.66/249.58. Next stop was Gainesville the following week (March 22) for the NHRA Gatornationals. Things didn't go so well there as he lost in the first round, to Chuck Etchells after qualifying #12 with a 5.39/271.98. He debuted his new Dodge Daytona at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals.

Notes: Photo from 1990 Nationals. Scott qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.38/269.94. A first-round 5.39/268.49 advanced when Jerry Caminito fouled, but in round two he slowed to 5.44/250.62 and lost to Bruce Larson's 5.31/271. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.42/269.38, but he lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. Things didn't go so well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals and the best time Scott was able to run (6.72/135.48) failed to qualify. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, things went better but not much. He qualified #15 with a 5.64/257.21, but he lost to John Force in the first round. Another first-round loss came at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where Kalitta qualified #11 with a 5.56/262.00 before losing to McCulloch.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Also 5.49 at Ennis All Stars race in April. Battle for Funny Car ET record at Ennis 87 was amazing: John Force (5.453), Mark Oswald (5.449), Mike Dunn (5.443), and Force (5.396) all reset the mark, but Ed McCulloch finally landed the mark with the 5.366 (with a best speed of 271.73). Later went 272.06 at Pomona Finals 87. | Ed started the season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.00/240.00. A 5.95/238.72 beat Tom Hoover's 5.97/238 in the first round, but he lost a clutch in the semifinals and lost to Kenny Bernstein. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 5.59/266.11 to qualify #5. He picked up to 5.53/266.90 in the first round, to beat Tom McEwen's 5.68/247. In the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 11.28/74.75 loss to Bernstein. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to McEwen. The following week (March 22) found the team at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Ed qualified #2 with a 5.57/266.58 behind Bernstein's track record 5.47. Billy Meyer broke against him in the first round, and McCulloch advanced with a 5.62/256.84. In round two, his 5.58/265.09 took out John Force's 5.69/257. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Johnny West's 5.76/252 in the "Hawaiian." Then came the NHRA Winston All Star race on April 5th at the Texas Motorplex. Ed qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 5.49/273.05, but he broke in the first round, against Meyer. Only sixteen FC's showed for the sixteen available spots at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals so qualifying was easy. Still, Ed laid down a 5.68/262.85 to qualify #3. A 6.01/252.45 advanced in round one, when Doc Halladay lost a blower belt and in round two he beat a tire-smoking Hoover with a 5.66/260.94. But he lost to eventual winner Bernstein in the semifinals. Ed did not race at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, choosing to go to Famoso for the Bakersfield meet that was running on the same weekend in early May. He ran 5.68/260.11 to qualify #2 behind Force's 5.66. These two would work their way into the final. McCulloch's first-round 5.85/256.41 beat Don Prudhomme who overpowered the track and smoked his tires. A 5.79/259.36 beat Jim Murphy in the semifinals. Force and McCulloch had a good race in the final, but Force's 5.72/260 got the victory over Ed's 5.79/236.84. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. A 5.88/252.38 qualified #5. He beat Eric Reed in round one, with a 5.87/257.50, but the car broke in round two giving Bernstein a free trip into the semifinals. Because of the Cajun Nationals being postponed one week due to rain, it was run on the same weekend as the IHRA Springnationals and subsequently, Ed did not run at Bristol. He did run a week later (June 7) at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.51 at 263.92 while beating Hoover and a semifinal 5.58/257.14 solo advanced to the final when Steve Hodkinson failed to show. In the final, he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" T-Bird. Mark got the victory with a 5.60/265 while Ed continued to wait for his first victory of '87. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #3 with a 5.74/252.52. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" before sleeping on the line in round two where his 5.81/253.95 lost to Meyer's 5.86/250. NHRA's Grandnationals in Canada had only fifteen cars show for the sixteen-car field, but McCulloch still ran hard registering a 5.72/258.32 to qualify #2 behind Force at 5.68. Ed's 5.76/250.69 in the first round, beat West's 5.83/257. A second round 5.88/247.38 took care of Jim Head and in the semifinals, his 5.74/248.07 got the best of Oswald. Once again, he was in a final, and he faced Force again. The results were the same as they had been at the Bakersfield race, John won with a 5.65/257 while Ed shut off with problems. He suffered a first-round loss to Darrell Amberson at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he lost to McEwen in the first round. That after qualifying #7 with a 5.67/256.77. The team was long overdue for a win. It didn't happen at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 5.87/243.96 qualified #7, and he beat Craig Epperly and West with times of 5.96/235.47 and 6.14/229.00 to reach the semifinals. Crew chief Bernie Fedderly dialed in too much power and Ed smoked the tires and lost to Force's 5.88/245. On August second, Seattle held an Funny Car show with ten Funny Car's running two rounds with the two lowest ET's running in the final. Ed ran 5.75/258.88 over Gary Densham and 5.78/253.52 over Beadle's quicker 5.76/249. His first-round 5.75 made the final where he ran Force who made the final with a 5.63. Once again, John gave Ed another runner-up finish with his 5.67/256 beating the "Miller" car's 5.72/254.95. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Ed qualified #6 with a 5.64/257.73. He shut off to a 9.26/90.66 win in the first round, when McEwen broke, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 17.94/44.25 loss to Bernstein's 5.57/265. Finally, a win! On August 30, he won the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk. He qualified #2 behind Oswald and then beat Scott Kalitta and Halladay before stopping Oswald in the final. For a team running this well it was a long wait for its first win of the season. Then it was off to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. The Big Bud Shootout was run in conjunction with this race and Ed qualified third for the eight-car field based on qualifying results for the past year. He lasted unit round two where he broke an oil line and shut off against Oswald. The following day for the Nationals, Ed qualified #5 with a 5.61/268.01. A first-round 5.79/259 beat Tim Grose's 5.97/241. In round two the car broke a crank and went into a fireball in a loss to Bernstein. Ed got the car stopped and he was OK. RH

Notes: Sherman qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.417/272.72. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.49/271.82 beat a motor-blowing Jim Dunn. But in round two, his 5.61/270.02 lost to eventual winner K.C. Spurlock's 5.37/263. He went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. He had trouble during qualifying when a slick blew out and tore off the rear part of the Firebird body. We needless to say, he failed to qualify. The team didn't take long to repair as Sherman was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. His 5.409/268.33 qualified #6, and in round one, his 5.45/261.32 beat Johnny West's 5.47/258. Despite running a strong 5.411/271.32 in round two, he lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.32/270. That was R.C.'s last NHRA event of the year. Photo from Indy 1989.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1988. Also 5.335 at Seattle 1988. Won 1988 Englishtown Summernationals. | Don started his '88 season by competing at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. An eight-car Funny Car show was run and the "Snake" qualified #4 with a 5.62. He beat Chris Lane in the first round, with a 5.69/257.14, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.38/104 loss to Ed McCulloch's 5.73/255. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.60. Kenny Bernstein beat him in the first round. Things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where a 5.48/262 qualified #6. He beat Darrell Amberson in the first round, and in round two, a 5.42/264 got past Scott Kalitta. But in the semifinals against Mark Oswald, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires. Prudhomme didn't run any of the IHRA races this year, so the next big event he was at was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta where in the second round, his 5.78 lost to Bernstein's 5.73. In mid-May, Don was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He was a bit off as he only qualified #15 with a 5.80 and he lost to Bernstein in the first round. Bernstein seemed to have Prudhomme's number as at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Kenny stopped Don in the second round. It wasn't Bernstein that kept him from victory at the NHRA Springnationals; it was tire smoke. After qualifying #6 with a 5.56, he smoked the tires in the second round and lost to Mike Dunn in Joe Pisano's car. Things had to get better for the "Snake" and they did in a big way at the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.54/261.70. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.50 and another 5.50/262 beat Bruce Larson in round two. In the semifinals, a 5.55/267 beat Johnny West's 5.68 in the "Hawaiian." In the final, he was up against Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Don prevailed, running a 5.44/260 for the win. So after that, he went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, and wins that as well. There he qualified #2 with a 5.47/257.36. A first-round 5.47/255 beat Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" while in round two, a 5.54/254 beat Oswald. In the semifinals, he dropped back into the 5.4's with a 5.49/257 over Dale Pulde. In the final, he met with long time Funny Car racer Bruce Larson. Bruce had been running 5.5's and in the final he slipped to a 5.63/260 that finished runner-up to Don's track record 5.41 at 257. On August 7, he was at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. The track was great with no less than six cars qualifying with 5.3 times. Leading them all was Prudhomme's 5.30/268.33. Don backed up the ET for a new NHRA record. Unfortunately, after beating John Martin in the first round, the "Snake" smoked the tires in the second round and lost to Tharp.

In the first round, he blew a motor and slowed to a 10.04/75.33, losing to R.C. Sherman's 5.49/271. He was at the NHRA Arizona Nationals two weeks later, qualifying #13 with a 5.49/247.66. He lost to Glenn Mikres in the first round. He did not go to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, but he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It was his first time back at the NHRA Gatornationals after seven years. His 5.46/255.24 qualified #6. He smoked the tires in the first round, but his 6.39/235.78 still beat Al Hofmann's troubled 13.43/54. Dunn lost to K.C. Spurlock in round two. Best NHRA times from the World Finals, 5.415/272.14. Notes: Long Nose 85/86. The first lock-up clutch at Indy resulted in best-ever times of 5.509 at 271.41, which were not backed up for records. Hit the first 5.40s with a 5.425 low qualifier at the Ennis Chiefs, which was not backed up as a record. However, a 5.543 at Ennis was backed up as the new record. Ran 266.66 and 265.17 at 1986 Chiefs. | This was Kenny's last year with the Tempo body and probably one of, if not his best season. At Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing, Kenny ran a track record 5.66 at 254.95 to qualify first. He beat Ed McCulloch in round one, with a 5.73/244.56, but in the semifinals, his 5.78/217.91 lost to John Force's 5.85/250. The NHRA season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.60 (Low ET) at 250.00 and continued to run 5.60's in the first two rounds over Rick Johnson (5.60/246.57) and John Martin (5.60/252.80). But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Tim Grose who ran a 5.61 for the win. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #1 with a track record 5.59 at 261.17. In the first round, he beat Tom Hoover's 5.76/254 with a 5.64/255.24. In round two, a 5.66/256.99 beat Force's 5.91/212, but he lost to a holeshot by Tom McEwen in the semifinals, when Tom's 5.67/256 beat Kenny's 5.65/255.82. He was runner-up to Paul Smith at the IHRA Pro-Am at Rockingham, and once again, he walked off with Low ET honors with a 5.58. In April at the NHRA Southern Nationals, he qualified #1 with a 5.67/260.86 (Low ET and Top Speed) but then suffered a rare first-round loss. He got out qualified for the first time that year at the NHRA Cajun Nationals when Force ran 5.66 (Low ET) while Kenny had to settle for the second position with a 5.69/253.73. But for the second race in a row, he lost in the first round. This time his 5.88/237.52 lost to Johnny West's 5.83/252 in the "Hawaiian." At Bristol, he got another runner-up finish at the IHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET at 5.57, but he blew an engine letting Grose's 5.87/231 get the victory in the final. Another runner-up finish followed at the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.65/254.02 qualified #2 behind Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. And that's how they finished. The final saw Oswald's 5.76/255 take the win over the Tempo's 5.80/250.13. It was a strange situation. The "Budweiser King" was probably the most feared car to come up against in competition, yet here it was, the middle of June, and the team hadn't won yet. Well, that all changed with the running of the Super Stock Nationals. While it wasn't a major event, it was still a satisfying win. Kenny qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 5.62/257.14 (Low ET and Top Speed). He beat Bruce Larson and Dominic Santucci with times of 5.75/254.95 and 5.72/256.41 before singling for the win with a 5.76/251.39 when West's Daytona broke. Now that the seal was broken, the wins started coming. On June 29, he won the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.71/254.66 but went on to set Low ET at 5.66 and, in the final be beat Force with a 5.69/257.28. The following week (July 6), he won the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan. A 5.81/256.41 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1, and he beat Smith and Grose with times of 5.95/253.52 and 5.84/252 to meet Oswald in the final. A 5.87/253.52 wrapped up the win. He took his fourth meet in a row at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 behind Oswald with a 5.62/239.48. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round, and a 5.67/254 beat West in round two. Hoover smoked the tires against him in the semifinals, and his 5.66/257 got lane choice over Force in the final. Once again, Bernstein prevailed, running 5.65/259.39 for another win. He managed to get into the finals at the next NHRA race, the Mile High Nationals at Denver. Kenny qualified #1 with a 5.84/227.96 and made his way into the final to meet Oswald. It took a Low ET of the meet run by Oswald to keep Bernstein out of the winner's circle again. Mark's 5.81/252 nipped Kenny's close 5.82/247.52. He won the PHR Championships at US 131, Martin, Michigan. A 5.79/247.25 qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field. In the first two rounds, he ran 5.74 and 5.80 while beating Bob Gottschalk and Scott Kalitta. But in the semifinals, he set track records of 5.72/259.36 to beat Grose's 5.94. In the final, he ran Oswald again. But Kenny took the win easily with a 5.77/257.87 when Mark had problems and slowed to a 7.55/120. On August 17, Kenny set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a track record 5.67 at 251.39. Unfortunately, in the first round, he fouled away a 5.81 against Billy Meyer. The following week (August 24), he was back in the winner's circle at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #2 (behind Oswald) but improved to a meet's best of 5.57/260. In the final, he met and beat Oswald.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1988. | Bruce stepped up his act in '88 and it showed when he won his first NHRA National event this year. He made the switch from Chevy bodies cars to Oldsmobile. His season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.54. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ed McCulloch. In that race, Ed smoked the tires while Larson motored into the second round where his 5.58 lost to John Force's 5.42. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.69. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. He did not race in the IHRA events this year so the next big event he attended was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta where he lasted until the second round where Oswald's 5.55 stopped his 5.62 from advancing. Oswald got him again at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, only this time it was in the first round. Bruce qualified #12 there with a 5.72. Larson got his first NHRA win at the Cajun Nationals at the end of May. He beat Tom Hoover and a fouling Force with a 5.60/254 in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he beat McCulloch and in the final, it was Kenny Bernstein he beat for his first victory. After that, it wasn't long before he was in another NHRA final; in fact it came at the very next race, the Springnationals at Columbus. Bruce qualified #4 with a 5.51. He took out Chuck Etchells in the first round, and a 5.50/268 beat John Martin in round two. In the semifinals, Mike Dunn smoked the tires against him and Bruce's 5.54/254 run moved him into the final to face Force. It was not much of a race in the final; when Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.69/50.65 while John ran 5.52/262 for the victory. Bruce followed the NHRA tour up north to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.65/263.00 and lasted until the second round when eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.50 beat his 5.59. Then came another final round appearance at the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.49/261.55 qualified #5, and he beat Frank Kramberger in the first round. A second round 5.59/260 beat Force's 5.65/251, and in the semifinals, a 5.57/260 beat Bernstein's 5.62/255. In the final, he ran Prudhomme who had been running steady 5.4's. Bruce tried hard, running a 5.63/260, but it finished second best to the "Snake's" 5.41/257. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals where he qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 5.55/254.95. R.C. Sherman fouled against him in the first round, and Bruce advanced with a 5.68/251.29. In the semifinals, he soloed with a 5.76/254.23 when Tim Grose broke and was unable to run. He found himself in another final, and while it wasn't a national event, I'm sure he still felt good. In the final, he faced low qualifier Bernstein. Kenny got the win while Larson got another runner-up finish. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals in Aug, everyone was running 5.3's in qualifying, except, it seemed, Larson. He qualified #8 with a 5.45/267.30. In the first round, he showed he could run with the big dogs by beating Bryan Raines with a 5.35. In the second round, a 5.52 beat a tire smoking Oswald. He was surprised by a quick-leaving Brad Tuttle in the semifinals and his 5.59 couldn't catch Brad's 5.62.

Notes: Photo from 1992 IHRA Winter Nationals. | Paula did not attend the NHRA Winternationals, but she showed up at NHRA's second race, the Arizona Nationals, on February 23. Her 5.71/264.70 best was good for the second alternate spot. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, Paula qualified on the "bump" with a 5.53/256.11. A first-round 5.43/258.39 lost to low qualifier John Force's 5.15/273. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, she ran a 5.94/195.31 to qualify #6 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, the Probe broke on the line against Del Worsham in the first round. The following week (March 22), Paula qualified #13 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.39/266.50. She ran a career-best (to this point) 5.37/271.08 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as she lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.20/285.

Notes: Jerry started the season by qualifying #12 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.47/264.78. He fouled in the first round and lost to Scott Kalitta. At the Arizona Nationals, a 5.55/253.52 qualified #15, and he lost to Tom Hoover in the first round. At Houston for the Supernationals, a 5.453/271.00 qualified in the top half (#8) of the field. Unfortunately, he again lost in the first round, this time to Mark Sievers. Caminito went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He beat Gary Litton in the first round before losing to Frank Kramberger in the semifinals. He got past the first round at an NHRA meet at the Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.47/254.38, and his 5.50/255.75 beat Hoover's late 5.45/262 in the first round. He lost to John Force's 5.55/257 in round two with a sub-par 5.74/248.89. His next stop was at Rockingham in the first week of April for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was only an eight-car field, and he had nothing but problems in qualifying as the best run he could make was 7.89/106.20. That was far off the 5.51 "bump." He took another second-round loss at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. He ran 5.403/260.41 to qualify #7 and beat a 5.55/256.48 Kramberger's 5.68/190 in the first round, before a 5.65/254.74 lost to Bruce Larson's 5.28/269.Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals in May and Jerry qualified #10 at 5.66/257.21. He lost to Richard Hartman in the first round. The following week (May 27), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He ran 5.84/245.23 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. But he was upset by Mark Sievers in the first round. Columbus was his next stop for the NHRA Springnationals where his 5.54/258.62 qualified #13. In round one, his 5.75/257.06 fell to Hoover's 5.57/252. Jerry's best times were the 5.403 at Alanta and the 271.00 at Houston. 1986 McKinney chassis. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: After running a Pontiac for the last few seasons, Paul Candies and Leonard Hughes got the Ford deal when Kenny Bernstein went to Buick for '87. The team started the year with Oswald driving the car to a 5.52/268.65 (Top Speed) in qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he won a close one over Tom Hoover when both recorded 5.76 (Oswald at 256.33). But in round two, the car overpowered the track, and Mark smoked the tires to 9.51/90.68, losing John Martin's 5.83/209. At Darlington, the team got a lot of photo coverage during qualifying when a blower exploded and lifted the body off the chassis. We needless to say, they failed to qualify. By the NHRA Gatornationals, a week later, a new body was installed. Mark qualified #3 with a 5.59/266.98 (Top Speed). But in the opening round, Mark was surprised by Bruce Larson, who ran a career-best 5.68/261 to beat his 5.74/265.17. More disappointment came at the April NHRA Winston All-Star event held at the Texas Motorplex. It was an eight-car show. Oswald ran 5.67/262 twice during qualifying and failed to make the cut (first alternate). The next NHRA race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 5.73/263.08 qualified #5 and an easy 5.97/250.00 in the first round beat Steve Hodkinson. But in round two, his 5.68/263.26 lost to eventual winner Bernstein's 5.61/264. The following week (May 3), the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. On one unofficial qualifying pass, Mark ran 263.62, which would have been good enough for Top Speed of the meet regardless of class if it was official. In the first round, his 5.74/251.39 beat Hoover, but bad luck in the form of a broken blower belt cost the team in the semifinal against Jim Head. The next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Mark qualified #3 with a 5.82/256.26, but then it rained, and the race was delayed one week. The team decided to go to Bristol instead for the IHRA Springnationals. Mark set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.64 at 263.15. A first-round 5.80/252 beat Scott Kalitta, while in the semifinals, his 5.77/260 took out Hoover. This put the team in their first final round of '87. Mark's final round opponent was Mike Dunn driving Joe Pisano's car, who had ripped off a 270 mph run in eliminations. Unfortunately, Mark spun the tires in the final and shut off, giving Dunn the win at 5.78/257. A week later (June 7), the Candies and Hughes team was at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. Finally, things "clicked" for them. Mark qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.75/263.92. Darrell Amberson broke on the line against him in the opening round, and Oswald advanced with a 5.73/247.25. A semifinal 5.57/263.92 beat a tire-smoking Doc Halladay and put the T-Bird into another final. This time, Mark faced veteran Ed McCulloch who had set a 5.51 track record earlier. The two had a great close race, with Oswald's 5.60/265.48 (Top Speed) winning over McCulloch's 5.60. With this win, Oswald led the IHRA Funny Car points standings over second-place Halladay. The team needed a little luck on the NHRA side of things. It didn't happen at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There Mark "only" qualified #10 with a 5.80/252.18. He improved to 5.76/256.33 in the first round to beat John Force's 5.75/250, but a tire-smoking shut-off 12.42/65.82 lost to D. A. Santucci's 5.80/253. The team followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Oswald took it easy in qualifying, running 6.04/248.07 for the #11 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with Bernstein. Mark was up for it, and his 5.88/238.24 put Bernstein's 5.95/245 on the trailer. Mark improved by two-tenths in round two, where his 5.68/260.26 (Top Speed) beat Al Hofmann. Unfortunately, he lost to McCulloch in the semifinals. In the first week of July, the team was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He set Top Speed during qualifying at 266.27. Oswald reached the final by running 5.75/254.23 in the first round over Jim White, who broke, and then he beat Darrel Amberson in the semifinal. This put him into the final against low qualifier Bernstein. The two had a great race, but Bernstein's 5.67/260 beat Oswald's 5.76/254 runner-up effort. RH | Also ran 5.428 and 5.449 at Ennis 10/87 and 5.492 at 87 Keystones. Confirmed 270.43 at Pomona Finals 87. Did the team run 276 somewhere this year? Direct drive or two-speed? Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. Gary qualified #14 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but in the first round, his 5.64/238.85 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.40/270. He then followed the NHRA tour to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, where he qualified #13 with a 5.57/241.80. He lost to Tom Hoover in the first round. Memphis was NHRA's next stop for the Mid-South Nationals. Gary's 5.52/253.30 qualified #12 for the show. Unfortunately, Bolger lost to Al Hofmann in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, Gary qualified #15 with a 5.55/246.71. But his problems in the first round, continued as although he ran an improved 5.48/255.82, he lost to eventual winner Mike Dunn's 5.37/261. He stopped off at US 131 for an eight-car show run "Chicago-Style," with all eight cars making two runs with the two Low ET's meeting in the final. Gary smoked the tires in his first race against Hoover and slowed to an 8.81/92.24 loss. In his second race, a 5.68/258.15 (Top Speed) beat Pat Walsh and advanced him into the final against Hoover, who had run a 5.62 best. Hoover smoked the tires in the final, and Bolger got the victory with a 5.62/244.60. He did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 5.53/262.00. Another 5.53 at 261.24 in the first round, lost to low qualifier Jim White's 5.39/273 in the "Hawaiian." Bolger also bypassed the next three NHRA events before appearing at Brainerd for the NorthStar Nationals, where his 5.58/259.59 qualified #9. He finally got past the first-round when his 5.51/264.08 beat Freddie Neely. In the second round, he fouled away a career-best 5.44 at 263.00 against McCulloch, who advanced with a 5.43/264. He went to Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, but his best of 5.72/218.87 failed to qualify. He then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. There, a new best of 5.34 at 259.06 qualified #9. In the opening round, he beat Gordon Mineo's 5.62/236 with a strong 5.38/253.09. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner White in round two. Bolger also qualified for the NHRA Heartland Nationals, where his 5.48/258.99 held on to the #16 spot. He improved by a tenth in the first round, where his 5.38/265.09 lost to White's 5.20/286.
