Notes: Jim started the year at Pomona, where he qualified #12 at 5.618/263.52. He improved to a great 5.464/255.60 in round one but lost to Al Hofmann's 5.36/270. His next event was Columbus, where Jim was a DNQ (19th best) with a 5.618/265.01 best effort in qualifying. He qualified #14 at Sonoma at 5.549/270.27 and lost in round one to Mark Oswald, 5.78/260 to 5.868/255.97. Jim qualified #12 in Seattle at 5.508/267.14 but broke against Mike Dunn in round one. That was Jim's last NHRA National event of the year. We are listing these times with the Quickor Daytona, but Jim may have raced John West's Metal Arrester Daytona at a few events. We need to confirm. Rick Howard photo from 1991 NHRA SpringNats.

Notes: West started the 1988 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 5.82/247, setting up a first-round race with low qualifier John Force. He lost the race, running a 5.93/243.24 to Force's 5.40/268. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he again lost to Force in the first round. He qualified #13 with a 5.68/254.45. His 5.98/234.37 in the first round lost to Force's 5.49/267. Shortly after that, the team made a stop at Baylands Raceway for a four-car match run at the East/West Meet. West beat Mike Dunn's 5.67/253 in his first race with a 5.64/249.30. He ran another 5.64 at 245.90 in his second race but lost to Force's 5.61/252. The final was another race between him and Force. Once again, John got the win, running a track record 5.51 at 248 to beat the "Hawaiian's" 5.82/221.13. At the NHRA Gatornationals, West did much better in qualifying, turning a 5.45/268.57 (career-best) for the #5 spot. Unfortunately, he still couldn't get out of the first round, as this time, Jim Head's 7.29/138 beat his 9.67/87.83 in a troubled match. He qualified for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta with a 5.87/258.10 before losing in round one. The next stop for the team was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. West ran 5.70/257.36 to qualify #10. He slowed to 5.86/247.72 in the first round and lost to Jim Head's 5.68/253. The month of May ended with the team at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Only 13 cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, West ran 5.72/259.74 for the #10 spot. He continued to have problems getting past round one as this time, he fell to Kenny Bernstein. At Columbus, his 5.77/258.59 qualified #15 for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, he took a loss in the first round, this time to Ed McCulloch. He finally got around the first round at the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 14 cars showed for the race, and his 5.67/259.74 qualified #9. Typically, he would have run the low qualifier in a sixteen-car field, but because the field was two short, he ran the second qualifier McCulloch in round one and won. He then sent Jerry Caminito home in round two with a 5.70/251. His run ended in the semi-final, where a 5.68 was not enough to beat Don Prudhomme's 5.55. Johnny ran 5.35/270 at the Englishtown Funny Car Nationals. His best NHRA national event times were 5.427 at Maple Grove and 268.65 at the World Finals at Pomona.

Notes: Tharp was at the Texas Motorplex in April for the IHRA Texas Nationals. His 5.80/242.45 qualified #14, but he lost to Mike Dunn in the first round, of competition. On May 15, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. There, his 5.61 qualified #6, but he lost to R.C. Sherman in the opening round. Photo from Columbus 1988. Richard drove the 'Max for most of the NHRA season, although Ronny Young took over at the World Finals. Richard's best NHRA times were a 5.569 in eliminations at Seattle and 259.94 in a second alternate effort at Columbus. Where did Richard run 5.40/270? We may need to remove those times.

Notes: Tim was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals in May. He qualified #12 with a 5.71/259.29, but he lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. Tim did not qualify at another NHRA race until the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. There he ran 5.48/247.79 to qualify #12. In the first round, he faced Ed McCulloch, and Grose had problems and shut down to a 9.58/90.17 loss. Tim qualified #5 at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but his chute fell out while running Tom Hoover in the opening round. His next NHRA event was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd, where he qualified #5 with a great 5.47/263.77. Both he and Al Hofmann had problems in round one, but Grose's 6.10/252.17 finished ahead of Al's 6.18/163. He slowed down even more in round two, to a 6.30/173.64 that lost to Jim White's 5.41/265. Notes: The former War Eagle car. Confirm that the team ran it for a while before getting the new 1990 Firebird body. ND cited that this was the Regal at Englishtown. |Neely was a former boat racer who bought Dale Pulde's former Buick Regal FC. He had only had the funds to run it once in '89 at the NHRA Southern Nationals with another former boat drag racer behind the wheel, Brad Tuttle. The car was then parked until late January, when Freddie took it back to Atlanta to make some test runs. The starter there asked what he had driven before, and Neely had never driven anything else down the quarter-mile. Neely made runs of 6.01/230 and 5.91/244. Dick Brown agreed to help out with some financing for the year. The first event the team competed in was the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. He qualified last in the eight-car show, and in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Richard Hartman.`The next time the car was run was at Rockingham on April 8 for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was his first NHRA race. This was an eight-car field, and Freddie ended up as the fourth alternate with a 5.77/246.57 best. Shortly after that (April 22), he was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Only sixteen cars showed; he qualified last with a 5.83/250.48. In the first round, he shut down to a 15.24/47.05 loss to Jim White's 5.26/268 in the "Hawaiian." He followed the NHRA tour to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Only 14 cars showed, so he clicked off to a 14.84/47.55 to qualify last. Bruce Larson beat him in the opening round. He turned up the wick at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.70/261.93 qualified #11. Not only that, he beat Johnny West in the first round. Unfortunately, he fouled against Mark Oswald in round two. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Sixteen cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, and his 5.87/248.86 qualified #5. He lost to Doc Halladay in the opening round. Neely's experience with the car continued to grow. At St. Louis in the middle of June for the IHRA Gateway Nationals, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a track record,5.62 (at 259.02, which held for Top Speed). He defeated Steve Litton in the opening round before losing to Mark Sievers in the semifinal. He qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 5.562/269.54, and his 5.70/261.55 in the first round lost to White's 5.40/269. He also ran the car at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, where his 6.18/230.59 qualified on the "bump." He shut down to 9.13/93.63 in the first round in a loss to low qualifier John Force's 5.62/265. Fred was a 5.705/253.73 DNQ at Indy and a 6.655/207.51 DNQ at Maple Grove. He ran 5.527/263.46 to qualify #14 at Topeka Fall but lost to Glen Mikres in round one with a 10-second shutoff. He qualified #12 at Ennis with a 5.413/269.13 but lost to Ed McCulloch in round one, 5.28/279 to 9.80-81. Finally, Fred was the third alternate at the NHRA Finals at 5.682/254.59.

Notes: Tripp qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.427/268.09. In the first round, he had a blower explode. The car caught fire, and Shumake fought for control, crossing the centerline before bringing it back into his own lane and hitting the guardrail. He got the car stopped, and he was OK. By the time the IHRA Winternationals rolled around in March, the car was fixed. Tripp qualified for the eight-car show and ran 5.56/258.62 in the first round, to beat a tire-smoking Brad Tuttle. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.44/269.46 when Ed McCulloch broke on the line. In the final, he faced low qualifier, John Force. John fouled, and Tripp took the victory by idling to an 11.10 for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.501/264.62 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to R.C. Sherman, 5.83/250 to 6.024/237.65. That was Tripp's last NHRA national event this year. A week later (March 27), he was at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals. A first-round 5.69 lost to Force's 5.64. Photo from Milan, MI, 1988, with Pulde driving. Did Tripp run 5.405 in this car? Formerly listed that time but removed it until we get confirmation.

Notes: Wyatt was at Sonoma at the end of July for the NHRA California Nationals. He qualified #9 with a 5.472/269.46. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Whit Bazemore's 5.40/273. The following week (August 4), he was in Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. A 5.53/258.02 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, he lost to low qualifier Jim White in the "Hawaiian." NHRA's next race was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Wyatt's 5.66/260.86 qualified #14, and in the opening round, he lost to Mark Oswald driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. He attempted to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, and after running 5.59/265.01, he came back out for another qualifying attempt. Unfortunately, the blower exploded on this run, and the car turned into a fireball. Wyatt bailed out just before the fuel tank exploded. The car was burnt pretty bad. My favorite body and paint, although not downforce efficient. We burned the body off at Indy, replaced it with a Ford Probe to finish off the season. - Wyatt Radke

A week later (August 8), he qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 5.462/269.38. He lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.25/280 in the first round, with a 5.64/260.64. Qualifying wasn't a problem at the NHRA Northstar Nationals, as only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Still, Bruce ran 5.59/268.31 to qualify #11 for the show. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round against Gary Densham.

Notes: Grose qualified #8 for the sixteen-car field at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.66. He beat Darrell Amberson in round one, before losing to eventual winner Mark Oswald in round two. This was the car with his vortFormer generators placed all over large flat spoiler (later outlawed). Photo from Columbus 1988. Confirmed 5.552 at Indy 1988 and 258.10 at Memphis 1988. Where was the 5.42 at 269 run?

Notes: Ray Higley was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.663/250.48 ended up as the fourth alternate for the show. He was the fourth alternate at Houston as well, running 5.807/261.02. Ray was the second alternate at Memphis at 5.900/254.09, but he got into the show. He dropped a 5.36 to 5.801/256.82 decision to Cruz Pedregon in round one. Ray was the first alternate at Englishtown at 5.808/222.18, but he got into the show as an alternate again. He broke in the first round, against Al Hofmann. Ray qualified #15 at Columbus with a solid 5.559/268.89. Unfortunately, it was he who could not make the call in round one, and Rick Sherrell took his place. Ray was the third alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 5.520/266.35 best. He was also the third alternate at NHRA Ennis with a 5.579 at only 198 mph. And then, you guessed it, the third alternate at the World Finals at 5.765/189.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Qualified on the bump at 2006 US Nats at 5.809. We need to confirm these best times for 2006. Ran identical 5.531 at Ennis Fall 87. Drag Racing List has 5.686/261.62 in the 86/87 issue. | Head started the '86 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 5.90/247.93. In the first round his 5.93/257.14 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86/245. Jim attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.16/205.47 failed to make the field. Atlanta held an eight-car show early in the year and Jim qualified #5 with a 6.39/188.28. Unfortunately, on his qualifying pass, the blower let go and it tore up the tinwork in the Firenza. He was unable to run and alternate Steve Hodkinson replaced him in eliminations. The car was fixed in time for Gainesville and the running of the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #11 with a 5.89/253.52. He lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he ran 5.91/250.41 to qualify #10. He beat Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round, and in round two, both he and Paul Smith smoked the tires with Jim's 6.22/248.48 getting the win. In the semifinals, Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian," fouled against him, so he motored into the final with an 8.38/108.93. In the final, he ran Ed McCulloch and although both ran 6.00 (Head at 250.13), Ed got the win. Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals was NHRA's next stop and Head was there, qualifying #8 with a 5.94/250.97. A first-round 6.07/214.18 beat Jerry Jefferson, but in round two against Billy Meyer, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline.

Notes: Dale qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.399/268.65. Unfortunately, he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round. The team ran a very limited schedule, showing up mostly at races close to home. In July, Pulde was driving the car at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.600/250.34 qualified #13. A first-round 5.80 lost to Jim White's 5.67. He also attempted to qualify at the next NHRA race, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle, but his 5.752/201.79 best was good for second alternate. After skipping the next few races, the team showed up at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Fallnationals where they qualified #3 with a 5.492/266.82. Pulde lost in the first round. His best NHRA outing of '89 came at the season ending World Finals back at Pomona. Dale ran a 5.415/266.35 to qualify #8. A first-round 5.529/266.11 beat Al Hofmann and in round two a 5.574/251.11 got around Jerry Caminito. In the semifinals, he lost to Bruce Larson's 5.37/252 with a 5.569/264.00.

Notes: Paul drove at NHRA Atlanta 1990 and qualified eighth at 5.407/263.77. He beat Tom Hoover in round one, 5.295/268.49 to 5.48/259. In round two, he beat Jim White, 5.525/257.95 to 8.93/95. In round three, Paul stood up to John Force, snatching a close 5.356/263.85 to 5.372/271.90 decision. Force got a slight holeshot, and the margin at the stripe was .011 seconds - about 4 feet!) In the final, Paul fell off to a 9.94, and Ed McCulloch got a 5.31/258 win.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1989. Jim replaced Johnny West as the driver of Roland Leong's "Hawaiian" entry for '89. The team started the season by qualifying #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.43/258.24. Jim cut a good light in his first-round race against Mike Dunn and his 5.46/258.10 beat Mike's better 5.42/269. In round two he beat Art Hendey with a 5.55/216.50, but as can be seen by his speed, he hurt some parts and was unable to make his semifinal race against Bruce Larson. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, the team qualified #13 and lost to Larson in the first round. White qualified #8 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but once again he was on the trailer after the first-round. Things went even worse at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where the team failed to qualify. The "Hawaiian" was at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. Jim qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.54/251.32, but he smoked the tires to a 6.33/181.96 in the first round, that lost to Tony McCallum's 5.76/247. The team continued to have trouble qualifying for NHRA fields. At the Springnationals, White was first alternate with a best of 5.58/260.11. He managed to get into the show when #15 qualifier McCallum had a blower explode and destroy his T-Bird. Jim beat John Force in the first round. In round two, Kenny Bernstein smoked the tires against him and Jim's 5.70/253 advanced. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hoover. The NHRA tour then shifted to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.64/237.52 qualified #11. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.63/78.78 that lost to Larson's 5.49/265. After that, it was back to the US at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The "Hawaiian" qualified #2. A 5.63/248.75 advanced past R.C. Sherman in the first round, but the Daytona broke on the line in the semifinals against Doc Halladay. The following week (July 9), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where they again failed to qualify. White qualified well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 5.68/255.53 for the #6 spot. He beat Gary Densham in the first round, before losing to Larson's 5.65 with a 5.78. It seemed as though the team found something as at Sonoma they qualified #5 with a 5.40/268.41. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round, with a 5.67/258.74. Jim then had problems and shut off to a 10.69 that lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.38/268. The good runs continued when at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. Jim qualified #3 with a great 5.33/266.98. A 5.48/253.16 beat a tire-smoking McCallum in the first round, and in round two, his 5.50/258.77 beat Jim Murphy. He was in the semifinals at an NHRA national event for the third time this season, but once again the gremlins stepped in and he broke against Larson. On August 13, he was at Martin, Michigan, for its Wolverine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and all cars ran two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Jim ran a 6.03/246.21 in his first race over Ronny Young, but in his second race, he smoked the tires and shut off. His ETs were not good enough to advance to the final. His next stop was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.45/267.69, but he slipped to an off pace 7.51/111.85 in the first round, that lost to R.C. Sherman's 5.68/256.

Notes: Blake was at Memphis in the first week of May for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. This was his first NHRA National event since he had run at the '94 Chief Nationals. His 5.73/260.94 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field, and in the first round, his 5.67/217.49 upset low qualifier Cruz Pedregon. He lost to eventual winner Gary Clapshaw in round two. Jim's best times for 1995 were run at Denver in the high altitude at 5.274/268.41 (qualifying third), although he ran a few other NHRA races nearer to sea level. Blake was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. A 5.46/256.11 qualified #14, but he broke in the first round against Whit Bazemore. He also went to Maple Grove in September for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.47/254.52, but a cracked crankshaft kept him out of eliminations. His next stop was at Topeka for the NHRA Craftsman Nationals. Unfortunately, he was the slowest of the 21 cars that showed, and his 5.56/268.17 failed to qualify.
