Notes: One of the biggest surprises at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona in '86 was Oswald's not qualifying for the show. His best attempt yielded only a 9.56/87.89. That was nowhere near the 6.09 "bump spot." The team then went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. Mark was still not running up to par, qualifying #7 with a 6.61/237.46. A first-round 6.38/247.93 (Top Speed) beat Billy Meyer, who shut off, but in the semifinals, he shut off and lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86 (Low ET) at 236. In Gainesville, things went much better for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Mark ran a 5.70/263.00 (Top Speed) to qualify #2. In the first round, an even better 5.65/259.36 beat a tire-smoking John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." In the second round, it was Oswald who smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.96/49.71 that lost to Ed McCulloch. Due to a rain delay, the Gatornats were run the same weekend as the IHRA Winternationals, so obviously, they didn't run the Darlington race. But they did make IHRA's second event, the Bayou Nationals at Louisiana Raceway Park. Oswald qualified #1 and beat McCulloch in the final for the victory. He lost to Jim Head in the first round, at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta after qualifying #2 with a 5.72/258.91 behind Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/260. On May 4, the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Oswald qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.70, but he was upset in the opening round by Steve Hodkinson. Mark's off-pace 6.05/205.94 fell to Steve's low buck car that won with a 5.88/246. Early in June, Oswald went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 5.76/263.11 (Top Speed) qualified #4. He improved to 5.74/260.11 to defeat Force's 5.78/253 in round one, but he lost in the battle of the "beer cars" in the semifinal, where his 5.78/257.14 fell to Bernstein's 5.71/252. Mark qualified #5 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.75/249.86. In their first-round race, Hodkinson crossed the center line against him, and Oswald advanced with a 5.92/246.77. John Force also crossed the centerline against him in the second round, and once again, Mark advanced, this time at 5.84/252.59. This did not happen again in the semifinal, as eventual winner Tom McEwen laid a straight as an arrow 5.85/236 on him to beat the Firebird's 5.94/251.81. Another win finally came at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Mark set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.65/259.66 (speed was a new track record). He continued to run strong through eliminations, and in the semifinal, his 5.76/255.17 beat Force's 5.84/253. The only problem was, Bernstein won his semifinal race with a 5.72/255, giving him lane choice in the final. Crew Chief Leonard Hughes had to be given a lot of credit in this win as he didn't dial in too much power and smoke the tires. Oswald won the final with a 5.76/255.76 over Kenny's 5.80/250. The following week (June 22), he also won the IHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.84/247.25. Larry Gould's 6.67/212 fell to his 5.89/252.80 in the opening round, and Mark reset both ends of the track record in the semifinal with a 5.77/254.95 that beat Paul Smith's 6.12/222 in the "Custom Body" car. He faced McEwen in the final, and there was no stopping the "Candies and Hughes" car on this day as Mark's 5.80/254.95 easily took the win over Tom's off-pace 6.19/176. At the end of June, the team was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.69/260.25 got the pole, but Mark and Brad Tuttle fried the tires in the opening round. Brad's 6.59/251 came out on top over Oswald's 6.61/251. It was probably the best race to watch of round one. The two "beer cars then met again in the final at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. They qualified one and two, with Bernstein's 5.81/256 getting the pole over Oswald's 5.87/245.90. Mark ran an easy 6.03/239.36 to advance in round one, when Doc Halladay broke. In the semifinal, he stepped it up to a 5.91/249 to beat a crossed-up Ed McCulloch. Bernstein had the edge in performance at this event, and it stayed true in the final where his 5.87/253 got the victory over Mark's 5.99/238.09 runner-up effort. Photo from Indy 1986. Mark also ran 265 at IHRA Bristol and won the 1986 IHRA championship. He also ran 5.619 at the 1986 Chiefs at Ennis. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Cool rear spoiler. Oswald, smoking the tires, also beat Bernstein wire-to-wire in the final of the '86 Mile-Highs, a hell of a race on YouTube. Bernstein didn't smoke 'em, and Oswald still beat him. - Joe Moore

Notes: Gary qualified last in the eight-car field at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.04/210. In the first round, his car was ailing, and as he was only able to run 11.74, which lost to Paul Smith's 5.78. Litton qualified #14 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.48/268.09. He lost an engine in the first round, and fell to Whit Bazemore. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals at the end of May, a 6.29/171.55 qualified #7 in the eight-car show. He picked up to a 5.69/244.76 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Smith's 5.47/268. After that, he went to Memphis for NHRA's Mid-South Nationals. Gary ran 5.74/201.97 to qualify #14, but he lost to Gordon Mineo in the first round. He qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.81. A 5.90/225.22 in the first round, lost to low qualifier Chuck Etchells' 5.26/275. Photo from Bristol, TN, 1992.

Notes: Back of the IHRA card said 5.43/272. We need to confirm. Ran 267.77 at Gainesville 3/90. Frank was running the T-Bird at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field and won his first-round race with a 5.69/237.09 over Doc Halladay. In the semifinals, his 5.57/267.83 beat Jerry Caminito. He lost to Chuck Etchells in the final. A week later he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.56/267.77 qualified #13, but he lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.499 at only 220.15. He lost to Caminito in round one. Qualifying was easy at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals as only 14 cars showed. Unfortunately, Frank lost in the first round. The NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge was his next stop and he qualified #9 with a 5.62/248.13. He lost to Jim White in the "Hawaiian" in the first round.

Notes: Brad was still running his Mustang at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It was a great race for Brad as he came to the event having a previous best of 5.73/261.17. In qualifying, his first pass was a tire-smoking 15.55. But after that, he ran 5.63/263.68, 5.77/259.14, and 5.52/264.93 to qualify #8. In the opening round, a slightly better 5.510/267.77 beat Gary Densham's 5.68/259. In the second round, he smoked the tires and shut down to 10.81/80.74 in a loss to Jim Head's 5.66/258. He attributed the good runs to the addition of an L&T 2-stage clutch along with new Dart heads and dual Enderle pumps as well as dual mags. After Pomona, he went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but the car again went up in tire smoke in the first round, where his 7.09/135.85 lost to Tripp Shumake's 5.56/258. The following week (March 20), he was at Gainesville, where he was disappointed as he ended up as the first alternate with a 5.99/254.02. | The former boat racer had a great season on the NHRA tour with best times of 5.510/267.77 at the Pomona Winters and a runner-up finish at Seattle. Brad qualified on the bump at Indy at 5.556, making it the quickest field in history to that point. He blew body on that pass. | A friend drove a truck all the way from California to Indy in two days with their spare body. The team stayed in the show and got it mounted one hour before eliminations! - Brad Tuttle, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com, 2/29/16

Notes: Eric had Steve Chrisman and Tim Grose drive the for him in Pomona and Gainesville. He began to drive at the Cajun Nationals, where he qualified #13 at 7.261/129.16. He improved mightily in round one, to a 6.023/222.22 but lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.87/257. He was the fourth alternate at NHRA Columbus at 6.148/230.76. Eric was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals at the end of June. He qualified #10 with a 5.982/248.75. In the first round, his off-pace 6.083/239.23 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.79/254. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but his 5.965/240.32 best was good for the third alternate. He skipped the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. On August 1, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the Motorcraft Funny Car Challenge race. All eight cars ran two rounds, with the two lowest ETs advancing into the final. Eric had some good help here as Dale Emery gave him a hand. In his first race against Mike Dunn, Reed got out of shape and shut off to 7.49/130.31. Things didn't go so well in his second race either, as the car broke on the line. Emery continued to help him at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. A 5.818/250.97 qualified #13, and he lost to John Force in the opening round, 5.65/259 to 7.81/117. Eric put in a good showing at Indy, where he qualified #11 at 5.748/239.87. He got revenge on Billy Meyer in round one, with a huge holeshot and extended the lead in performance as well, earning a 5.767/244.10 to 5.823/200.04 victory. He lost to Johnny West in round two with a 10-second shut-off. Eric qualified #13 at Maple Grove at 5.824/196.97. In round one, he lost to Don Prudhomme, 5.58/254 to 5.805/212.76. Eric got his best numbers of the near at the Ennis Chief Auto Parts race. He qualified #13 at 5.550/261.32. He stood toe to toe with Mark Oswald in round one, but lost with his best speed of the year, 5.42/260 to 5.556/267.69. Eric qualified in his traditional #13 slot at Phoenix Fall with a 5.780/257.73. He did not race in round one, and first alternate Johnny West took his spot against John Force. Eric qualified #16 at the Pomona World Finals at 5.670/249.79, but he fouled against Raymond Beadle in round one. AKA Eric Reed-Dowd. Photo from Columbus 1987.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Jim was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His best of 6.42 failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to make the show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.87/245.96 best was good for the fourth alternate. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 11 where ten FCs each made two runs and the two lowest ETs met in the final. Jim's first race had his 6.22/231.95 beat Johnny West's 6.23/186 in the "Hawaiian." In his second race, his 6.33/176.81 lost to Gary Densham's 6.13/234. His ETs were not good enough to get into the final. Later that month, he was at Sacramento for similarly run show. Dunn won his first race over a broken Wally Giavia with a 6.08/245.91. In his second race, he ran 5.96/247.84 to beat Jim Murphy's 6.06/228. Unfortunately, once again, his times were not good enough to make the final. Dunn failed to qualify at the NHRA Fallnationals where his 5.92/253.09 was the fifth alternate. Going into the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona, Jim's best ET had been 5.74. But before the race, a new lock-up clutch was installed as well as dual magnetos and fuel pumps. On his first qualifying attempt, he ran 5.71/253.59. The next run was 5.67/258.54 and a final 5.60/267.45 qualified #13. He upset a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein in the opening round with yet another career-best of 5.55 at 266.98, but he lost to Mark Oswald in round two.

Notes: Al qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.47/267.37. He broke in the first round, against Bruce Larson. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.54/262.54 qualified #14. He lost to John Force in the first round. In March, he was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where he qualified #15 with a 5.65/242.65. Larson got him in round one. Al continued to do well qualifying for these shows. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.53/251.25 qualified #11. Once again, he lost early when he and his opponent, Jim Dunn, smoked the tires in round one. Al shut down to 13.43/54.80 while Jim advanced with a 6.39/235. Hofmann then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car field, and his 5.57/259.29 failed(third alternate)to qualify. He got past the first-round at the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. There he ran 5.61/259.14 to qualify #12, and in the first round, he fouled. But in the opposite lane, K.C. Spurlock was crossing the centerline, and due to the first or worse rule, Al advanced. Unfortunately, in the second round, his T-Bird broke and gave Force an easy win. Photo courtesy Al Hofmann.

Notes: Mark attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but ended up as the first alternate with a best of 5.504/267.30. But Mark got into the show as an alternate and upset Mark Oswald in round one, 6.932/213.98 to 7.469/155.84. He then upset a broken Cruz Pedregon in round two with a 9.102/89.47. He broke against John Force in the semis. Mark went to Phoenix for the NHRA Arizona National, where, once again, he was the first alternate with a 5.658/263.46 best. The team was the sixth alternate at Ennis with a troubled 8.052/107.30. They wrapped up the year at the NHRA Finals but did not improve, finishing as the tenth alternate at 11.392/80.38. Notes: First year for Castrol, and first year for NHRA National event wins. Photo from Columbus 1987. Also ran 5.453 at same Ennis race. | John started the season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing race at Firebird Raceway on January 18. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.79, a tenth behind Kenny Bernstein. In the first round his 5.87/244.56 beat Gary Densham, who went into tire shake and shut off. In the semifinals, he improved to 5.73/247.93 to beat a tire smoking Tom McEwen. This put him into the final against Bernstein. Kenny had run 5.72 in his semifinal race and had lane choice. The two had a good race, but Force ran his best of the meet, a 5.70/252.80 to win, while Bernstein made his worse run, a 5.78/243. Things did not go so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. John blew up two superchargers in qualifying, finally getting a 5.67/260.94 run in for the #9 spot in the field. He faced low qualifier Bernstein in the first round, and lost when his third supercharger exploded. Things looked to be going in the same direction at the NHRA Gatornationals when once again a blower exploded in qualifying, but crew chief Austin Coil got it figured out and John qualified #6 with a 5.66/254.59. A first-round 5.62/261.24 advanced when Jerry Caminito fouled, but in round two, his 5.69/257.58 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.58/265.

Notes: Head started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.67/252.38, and he won his opening round race against Tripp Shumake, who lost a blower and crossed the centerline. His opponent, Brad Tuttle, smoked the tires in round two, and Jim's 5.66/258.76 advanced. Mark Oswald smoked the tires in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinal, and Head ran 7.66/123.59 to go into the final. There he would face Dale Pulde. Dale had been running 5.4s, so it looked like he was in trouble. It turned out that both smoked the tires, and Pulde recovered first to a 6.02/223 to take the victory over Jim's 6.38/184.95. He was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 5.70/248.48 qualified #13, and in round one, he beat Johnny West, who was driving the "Hawaiian."Both had problems, and Jim's 7.29/138.29 beat West's 9.67/87. But his 8.78/97.91 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.06/218 in round two. He then raced at the IHRA Texas Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.58/236.53. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. He qualified #5 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he windowed a block while running 5.65/253.37 in defeating Darrell Amberson in the first round. After changing the engine, he smoked the tires against John Force in round two. The following week, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.59/254.95 qualified #3. Amberson broke against him in round one, and Jim advanced with a 5.98/245.23. In the semi-final, Oswald fouled, and Jim ran 5.72/248.61. In the final, he went up against low qualifier Ed McCulloch, and Head fouled. He shut down to 6.33/175.00 while Ed ran 5.68/261 for the victory. Jim showed up using a new high-gear only, AFT 5-stage clutch at Memphis. It seemed to pay off as he ran 5.55/264.00 to qualify second to John Force's similar,5.55/263. In the first round, Head's 5.68/253.02 beat West's 5.86/247. In round two, he used a 5.71/255.02 to defeat R.C.Sherman's 5.82/259. He and Oswald had a close race in the semi-final that saw Mark's 5.62/268 beat his 5.65/264.70. Still, Head was now up to fourth in NHRA points with the semi-final finish. Photo from Columbus 1988. Jim started running top fuel beginning at Indy in 1988 and continued in that class in 1989. The Memphis and Columbus times were his best of the year, but Jim was a solid qualifier in the 5.50s and 5.60s and nearly reset his bests at Seattle with a 5.565/267.06 pass.

Notes: Photo from the 1990 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. | The '90 season saw Densham without the aid of his long term crew chief, Henry Velasco. He showed up at Firebird Raceway for it's test and tune race in Jan with Richard Bays turning the wrenches. Gary also got a sponsor, Jerry Lowery's California Discount Warehouse. He made two runs at Firebird, a 5.80/231.89 and a 5.47 that came with a career best speed (to this point) of 267.06. Gary attempted to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.63/262.31 was only good for first alternate. He did make the show at the second NHRA race of the season, the Arizona Nationals where a 5.55/263.38 qualified on the "bump spot." He lost to KC Spurlock in the first round. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he still lost in the first round, (to Mark Oswald), but he qualified #13 with a 5.58/255.17.

Notes: Steve didn't run nitro until 1990. He ran these numbers at an IHRA event that year. We need to determine how the Tempo fit in to the timeline with the J. Ed Horton T-Birds. Steve did not run any NHRA national events in 1990.

Notes: Doc did not have a good weekend on March 20 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 5.817/252.03, but the car went into heavy tire shake in the opening round of eliminations. That caused the body to shake and jam the throttle open in his race against Scott Kalitta. Halladay rode the centerline and knocked out the top-end photocells before enough air got under the body to rip in off the chassis. He ran a low gear only 6.54/212 and was unhurt except for his pocketbook. Halladay qualified #13 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.741/249.51. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round, 5.47/263 to 5.825/270.77. Shortly after that, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. There, his 5.77/248.62 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. Doc qualified #14 at the Houston Supernationals at 5.633/249.44. He lost to Prudhomme again in round one, 5.30/267 to 5.719/247.11. That was Doc's last NHRA national event of the year. Confirmed 5.633 at Houston Fall '88 and 252.03 from Gainesville '88. Where was the 5.53 at 267 run? | Halladay turned a 5.87/240.0 while winning the Funny Car title at the 1988 Olympics of Drag Racing (Union Grove, Wis.) He held both ends of the track record (with better times) at the time. - RT | Photo from Milan, Mich., 1988.

Notes: Ronny ran four NHRA national events this year. He was the fourth alternate at Memphis at 6.987/142.11. Young qualified on the "bump" for the NHRA Western Auto Nationals at 5.615/264.62. In round one, he lost to number one qualifier John Force, 5.07/291 to 5.695/193.88. It was deja vu at the Heartland Nationals, where he again qualified on the bump with a 5.380/266.58. In the first round, he slowed to 5.561/211.91 in a loss to low qualifier Force's 4.95/297. Ronny attempted to qualify at the NHRA Chief Nationals in October, but his 5.408/247.38 best was good for the second alternate.
