Notes: Also Ran NHRA's fastest speed at 264.86 at the World Finals. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Prudhomme started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He ran 5.98 to qualify #6 in the eight-car field. John Force banged a blower in the first round, and Don advanced with a 5.99/238.09. In the semifinal, he ran 6.04/229, but he had gotten out of shape and crossed the centerline. His opponent, John Collins, advanced to the final with a tire-smoking 9.13. The following weekend, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Nothing went right there for the "Snake," as the best run he could make was a 7.92/111.96. Obviously, that failed to qualify. After that bad showing, things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Don's 5.80/252.10 qualified #11. He improved to 5.78/251 in the opening round to beat Force. In round two, the car went into heavy tire shake, and he shut off against Collins, who advanced with a 5.74. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 6 for the Coor's Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, tire shake did him in again, where he clicked it off to 9.45 in a first-round loss to Johnny West's 6.59. Shortly after that, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Prudhomme qualified #7 with a 5.90/253.52. He continued to look strong in round one, where his 5.88/252.95 beat Jim Head's 6.07/246. In the second round, his opponent, Ron Correnti, sheared a fuel pump and the "Snake" advanced with a 5.94/249.58. But that was it, as an off-pace 6.12/204.73 lost to the eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 5.75/254 in the semifinal. It was no secret that Prudhomme was not running up to par, nowhere was it more evident than at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He blew an engine during qualifying. He blew up another one in the first round, while beating Al Segrini. Yet another engine was lost on a 5.83/237 in round two that beat Mark Oswald's 5.85/257 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He was supposed to run Dale Pulde in the semifinal, but he gave up and packed up for the home as he was out of parts.

Notes: Was also sponsored by High Performance World | If memory serves me correctly, this was Joe Pisano's '83 Camaro, formerly driven by Tripp Shumake, purchased by Cowin, then lengthened (with Pontiac nose & tail) while in the US in 1985. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Made a splash on the second half of the NHRA national event trail in 1985: Indy - #11 qualifier at 5.770/257.43. Lost a close one on a holeshot to John Force in round one, 5.835/253 to 5.813/253.80 (MOV - .015 seconds, about 5.5 feet). Maple Grove - #10 qualifier at 5.781/255.24. Shut off to a 14-second run against Dale Pulde in round one. Seattle - #10 qualifier at 5.924/247.25. Shut off to a 15-second run against Force in round one. Pomona World Finals - #7 qualifier at 5.776/257.87. Put a big holeshot on Al Segrini in round one, but Al came around him for the win, 5.760/248.48 to 5.829/243.50 (MOV .042 - about 16 feet). We need to confirm where 5.67/266 numbers came from. I remember them, but it was not on the 1985 NHRA national event trail. The 266.27 was reported in an Aussie drag mag in December 1985. Probably an IHRA national event.

Notes: The unique spoiler was later outlawed. Meyer ran this body in the last half of '87. Qualified #9 at 5.521 and ran 262.54 in a first-round loss at the same race. The car began the year blue & white. | At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Meyer ran 5.60/251.81 to qualify #6. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round and shut off to an 8.62/90.18 loss to John Martin. He had a rough outing at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He had a supercharger explode in qualifying, and he wrecked the Firenza body. His 5.73/255.73 qualified #10. Billy put on his backup body, a Tempo, for eliminations. In the first round, he lost another blower and the race to Ed McCulloch. On April 5, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was an eight-car field, and Meyer's 5.64/256.48 qualified on the "bump." McCulloch broke against him in the first round, and Billy advanced with a 5.60/260.56. A 5.61 at only 188.20 in the semifinals lost to Tom McEwen's 5.45/262 in the "Blue Max."Meyer had more bad luck at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified well with his 5.76/255.75 getting him the #6 spot, and his 5.71/254.59 easily beat Raymond Beadle's 6.21/215 in the "Blue Max" in round one. But in the second round, he blew another supercharger, and the force of the explosion blew the body off the car. He lost to John Force. Baton Rouge was more or less a normal event for Meyer. He qualified #10 at 5.98/236.03. Qualifying wasn't much of an issue as only sixteen cars showed. But he was late against Force in the opening round, and his 5.67/241.93 lost to Force's 5.74/252. He won his 11th NHRA career victory and his first since the '84 Grandnationals when he won the Springnationals at Columbus in June. He qualified #7 with a 5.79/241.28. He had a bit of luck on his side when in the first round, he had a rod break on his 6.94/66.38. But his opponent, Rod Dudley, crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the second round, his 5.86/250.27 defeated McCulloch's late5.81/253. Don Prudhomme smoked the tires against him in the semifinal and shut down to 7.05/152 while Meyer advanced with a 5.81/249.58. He ran Jim Head in the final, and this was Meyer's race as he could do no wrong; his 5.84/251.95 got the victory over Head's troubled 7.07/132. RH

Notes: Photo from 1991 Norwalk. Did not run there as IHRA only ran TAFC's. Confirmed 5.620 at 263.23 in Atlanta 91. Where were the 5.569 at 265.95 run? | Bob attempted to qualify at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, but his 5.74/253.59 best was good for third alternate. He did not attend any other NHRA races after that, in '91.

Notes: Ron qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 5.582/261.70, but he lost to Chuck Etchells in the opening round of eliminations, 5.65/266 to 7.69/112. Ron qualified #15 at Phoenix with a 5.560/258.99. Jim White got him in round one, 5.25/278 to 5.529/258.84. Ron really stepped up at the Houston Fram Supernationals with a #7 qualifying 5.341/265.87. In round one, he beat Tom Hoover, 6.44/230 to 7.72/107, but broke against Mark Oswald in round two. Ron's next NHRA national event was Seattle, and he was the second alternate at 7.18/195. Ron again qualified nicely at the Winston World Finals in Pomona, ending up #13 with a 5.447/263.31. But Jim White got him again with a 5.30/289 to 6.56/148 win in round one. It was a nice year for the independent campaigner.

Notes: Mike started the year by running 5.89/245.90 to qualify #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Billy Meyer's 5.85/242 in the first round, with a 5.91/241.28 before losing to John Force's 5.75/252 in round two with a 5.90/250.00. In May, he was at Bakersfield, where his 5.82/257.87 (Top Speed and new track record) qualified #2 behind Force's 5.76/243. Dale Pulde broke a transmission against him in the first round, and Mike advanced with a 5.81. He got out of shape in the semifinal, and his 7.87/117 lost to John Martin's tire-smoking 6.78/199. Dunn ran NHRA Bandimere CO 7/86. Best 1986 NHRA national event times of 5.656/265.72 at the World Finals. Ran in the first nitro match race at Ennis (against Billy Meyer himself). Both cars ran 262 to show the track's potential. Also ran 257.28 at Indy 1986. Photo from Indy 1986. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9.

Notes: Long Nose 85/86. Photo from Milan, MI, IHRA Northern Nats 85. Set NHRA ET records at 5.646 at 85 Gators and 5.569 at 1985 Maple Grove. Low qualifier at 1985 Gators with a 5.672. Ran 258.76 at 85 World Finals. | Kenny started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing in January. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a new track record 5.74 at 248.61 (Top Speed). Kenny made his way into the final by beating Tom McEwen with a 5.84/248.61 and a tire-smoking single in the semifinals when Paul Smith was unable to run after a first-round fire. He met John Collins in the final and the "Budweiser King's" reverser failed so Collins got to solo for the victory. The following week, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.74/254.09 qualified #4 and in round one, a 5.80/259 beat Jim Head. Bernstein ran a career-best (to this point) 5.67 at 235.60 in round two, but he lost to Rick Johnson who was running a 5.58/263 in the "Hawaiian." He was in Atlanta for an eight-car show in March where his 5.81/250.00 qualified in the #2 spot. In the first round, Mark Oswald stepped up from a qualifying 5.91 to a 5.72/248 in the "Candies and Hughes" car to beat his 5.85/249.30. Things clicked for the team at the NHRA Gatornationals. Kenny qualified #1 with a 5.67/261.78 (Top Speed). Frank Hawley broke a transmission in the first round, in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and Bernstein advanced with a 6.25/226.92. In round two, his 5.71/251.81 beat Tom Hoover and a semifinal NHRA record-setting 5.64 at 256.70 took out Collins' tire shaking Camaro. He faced John Lombardo driving Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" in the final. John had problems and shut down while Kenny ran 5.70/254.09 for the win. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Once again, he ran well, lasting until the semifinals where his 5.80/247 lost to Oswald's 5.78/260. Another NHRA title came at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals in April. Kenny's 5.72/254.09 qualified #1, and he worked his way to the final by stopping a tire-smoking Dale Pulde in the first round, with a 5.81/249.03. In round two, a 5.80/249.58 ended Jody Smart's chances and a 5.75/254.66 got around Don Prudhomme's off-pace 6.12/204 in the semifinals. His final-round opponent was Ed "the Ace" McCulloch. There was no stopping Bernstein on this day as his track record 5.69 at 252.95 got the victory over Ed's 5.81/247. While he was running strong in NHRA, he was still not able to reach the final in IHRA competition. At the second race of the season, the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, he got another semifinal finish when Billy Meyer's 5.88/250 beat his 5.95/243. Bernstein's next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 5.74/247.93 qualified #2 behind Pulde's similar 5.74/251. He beat McCulloch in round one, with a 5.83/243.90. In round two, a 5.76/245.49 beat Oswald, but in the semifinals, Kenny lost an engine on a 6.09/185 pass that beat a tire-smoking John Force. The team replaced the engine for the final where he ran Head. Something wasn't, buttoned up right as the "Budweiser King" broke on the line and Head soloed for the race win. His IHRA semifinal streak continued at Bristol for the Springnationals. There, he set Low ET in the semifinals with a 5.66 at 258, but he lost to eventual winner Pulde whose quick-leaving 5.69/257 won. Things were better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 at 5.75/248.48, and then a track record 5.73 at 251 beat Al Segrini and in round two, his 5.74/249.03 got around a tire spinning Pulde. Another 5.74 at 248.48 beat an out of shape Prudhomme in the semifinals. This matched Kenny up against Texas neighbor Meyer in the final. Billy overpowered the track and went up in smoke while Bernstein won his third NHRA race of the season with a 5.81/251.25. The team's next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Kenny's 5.67/249.30 (Top Speed) qualified #2 behind Pulde's 5.66/249. In the first round, Bernstein set Low ET with a track record 5.65 at 249.30 to beat Chuck Etchells. A semifinal 5.78/243.24 advanced over Tim Grose. This paired him up against Pulde in the final. Kenny had traction issues and Pulde won with a 5.90/247. Another runner-up finish came at the NHRA Grandnationals. There, he only ran 5.85/246.94 to qualify #10. Both he and Grose ran 5.84 (the Bud car at 244.96), but Kenny got the win light. In round two, Oswald fouled against him and Kenny blew an engine while advancing with a 5.85/240.12. The team swapped out a new engine for the semifinal and it improved the car to a 5.69/252.52 to beat Prudhomme's 5.80/256. He faced Johnson in the final and despite running a 5.79/250.13, Rick picked up his first NHRA National event victory with a 5.72/260. The following week (July 7), he had some bad luck at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #4 for the show, but attempted another run. Something let go and the car turned into a fireball. Kenny got it stopped and was OK, but the car was damaged badly and was unable to run in eliminations. With a team this strong, they didn't miss a beat, showing up at Englishtown the next week for the NHRA Summernationals. Bernstein set Low ET with a track record 5.62 at 234 in qualifying number one. He then ran 5.90, 5.85, and 5.76 at 249.58 to beat McEwen, Pulde, and John Force (in that order). In the final, he went up against Grose, and Bernstein's 5.77/249.58 scored the win over Grose's 5.80/250. Best NHRA times were the 5.569 at Maple Grove and 261.78 at the Gators. Ran 5.714/250.69 in winning IHRA Cincinnati over Dale Pulde, snapping Dale's four-win streak.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. | Frank was at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.44/249.86 qualified #11. Unfortunately, he had problems and was unable to run in eliminations. The first alternate, Jerry Caminito, took his place in the field. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. There a 5.82/252.24 qualified #10. But he smoked the tires and shut off in the first round, losing to Whit Bazemore's 5.90. Kramberger had problems during qualifying at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He blew a motor; oil got under the tires and smacked the wall. He was OK, and the damage was not too severe. He had earlier run 5.71/252.59, which was good for the fifth alternate. He qualified on the "bump" at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 5.55/265.40. But he lost to eventual winner Jim White driving the "Hawaiian" in the opening round. Frank was the first alternate at Topeka for the NHRA Heartland Nationals with a 5.60/252.45. He made the show at the NHRA Chief Nationals, where his 5.53/264.86 held down the "bump.” But a first-round 5.82/190.83 lost to White's 5.28/286. He did not race at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals.

Notes: The team made some stout passes this year in NHRA competition. Qualified #14 at Bandimere at 5.827/250.97, but lost to Al Hofmann in round one, with an 11-second shut off. The team qualified #16 at Brainerd with a 5.560/265.40 for their best ever speed, but an off pace 8-second run lost to John Force in round one. And at Topeka, they were the fourth alternate at 5.495/260.04 for their quickest ET ever.

Notes: Times confirmed for Sonoma 94, but need to find out if the other times Paula ran this year were in this car or the Trapper Racing car. OR. IS this the Trapper Racing car, just with other sponsorship? | Paula was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where she was the sixth alternate with a 5.75/248.13 best. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, she qualified on the "bump" with a 5.57/261.02, but "windowed" the engine block and was unable to run in eliminations.

Notes: West did not race at Pomona but qualified #12 at Phoenix with a 5.456/258.24. Bruce Larson got the best of him in round one, 5.24/274 to Johnny's consistent 4.466/250.90. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, a 5.509/258.91 qualified #11. But despite running an improved 5.478/258.02 in the opening round of eliminations, he lost to R.C. Sherman's 5.451/261.32. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran 5.561/253.80 to qualify #12. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and the car slid along the guardrail to an 11.33/76.40 loss to eventual winner Ed McCulloch. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There, his 5.618/260.04 qualified #13. In the first round, a much improved 5.499 (no speed recorded) lost to John Force's 5.36/273. Johnny qualified #8 in Memphis at 5.514/261.02 and lost to Mark Oswald in round one, 5.357/274.97 to an off pace 8.80. In Baton Rouge, Johnny again made the field, this time with a #6 qualifying 5.503/258.32. First-round woes continued, however, as Freddie Neely took a 5.56/258 to a 14-second win. At Columbus, Johnny qualified #15 at 5.568/256.84. That put him up against #2 qualifier Jim White in round one, and white took the match, 5.54/251 to 8.72/89. At Sanair, West qualified #12 at 5.627/252.22. In round one, Tom Hoover barely got around him after Johnny laid a massive .500 to .576 holeshot on him. Hoover's 5.533/262.46 passed West's 5.619/256.19 by one-hundredth of a second at the top end! Johnny qualified on the bump at the Summernationals with a 5.583/258.42, putting him up against low qualifier KC Spurlock, who had rocked the house with a 5.19 at 273. But Johnny put a tenth on Spurlock at the tree and then flat outran him, 5.604/263.31 to a shut off 9.49/77. West then surprised Mark Oswald in round two, 5.698/265.33 to 5.724/263.77. A West holeshot made it less close than the numbers indicated. Johnny then got into the finals with a telepathic .408 light and a consistent 5.604/263.54 to take out Tom Hoover, who shut off. In the final, Johnny crashed his car as Chuck Etchells took the win at 5.45/271. That ended Johnny's year on the NHRA trail.

Notes: Gary attempted to qualify at the Springnationals, but his 5.617/245.76 best was only good for the second alternate. | At the Night of Thrills at Englishtown, Densham ran 5.76/230.76 in the first round on a single after Opponent Frank Kramberger broke & had one of the 2 quickest ETs of the Round (2nd to John Force) to make it to the final run off where he would Defeat an unusually tardy Force with a 5.72/247.25. | He did make the field at the next race, the Grandnationals in Canada, where a 5.827/248.48 qualified #15. In the first round, he improved to 5.795/265.25 but still lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.722/256.99. Gary competed at an eight-car show at Firebird Raceway featuring Jets vs. Funny Cars on June 30. He beat Bruce McComb in the first race with a 6.35 and won his second race over Sue Merman with a 6.30/227.56. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.989/235.23 qualified #14, but he lost to Jim White in the first round, 5.899/248.64 to 6.112/233.52. He was in Seattle on August 6 for the NHRA Seafair Nationals, where he ran a strong 5.547/256.55 to qualify #13. He advanced with a 6.644/200.89 when Mike Dunn broke a rear end in the first round. In round two, he lost to eventual winner Bruce Larson, 5.353/270.10 to a 13-second shutoff. He won the Firebird Nightfire Nationals a week later (August 13). He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.10/227.76, and in the final, his 6.14/226.61 took the victory when Wally Giavia lost a blower. Gary was the fifth alternate at the Castrol GTX Fallnationals at 5.705/249.37. He also failed to qualify at the NHRA Finals, with his 5.654/263.31 taking the sixth alternate slot. Notes: Jim started the year as the second alternate at Pomona with a 5.552/264.70. He qualified #15 at Houston Spring at 5.834/248.07 but shut off against Ed McCulloch in round one. Jim's next NHRA national event was the Mile Highs in Denver, where he qualified #13 at 5.938/238.22. Mike Dunn took the first-round win, however, 5.69/252 to 5.94/217. On July 30, he qualified #15 at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.662/241.81. He had problems in the first round, and shut off to 13.47 that lost to John Force. Jim was at Seattle in early August for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. He qualified #15 with a 5.568/265.01 and a 5.621/255.02 beat Ed McCulloch in the first round. He lost to Jim White driving the "Hawaiian," shutting off to a ten-second run in round two. Jim was the second alternate at Indy at 5.594/255.31 and the first alternate at the GTX Fall Nationals at 5.583/261.17. Jim had his best numbers and qualifying position at the Pomona World Finals. A 5.508/262.85 placed him #11 in the field. But Jim's decent 5.58/230 ran into John Force's 5.35/276 in round one, and Jim's nice NHRA national event run was done for the year. Notes: Confirmed 262.08 at Ennis at first nitro match race at the track (before the national event) August 1986. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Billy started the '86 season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.75/241.28. He was a little late out of the gate in the first round, as his 5.85/242.58 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.91/241 in Joe Pisano's Daytona. He attended an eight-car show at Atlanta where he qualified #3 with a 6.20/210.28. He shut off against Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Meyer qualified #3 with a 5.76/251.11. He beat Jim Head in the first round, before smoking the tires and losing to Tom McEwen in round two. Firebird raceway hosted the Coor's Funny Car race in April and Billy had tire-smoking problems on both his runs; he lost to John Force and Johnny West with times of 12.62 and 6.38/205.01. We needless to say, he failed to make it to the finals. On April 20 he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he ran 5.75/252.10 to qualify #3. He beat Tom Hoover before smoking the tires to a 6.12/244.16 loss to Ed McCulloch who also had traction problems at 6.02/242. In May, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet. He ran 5.84/252.80 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He stepped up to a 5.77/250 in the first round, to beat Rodney Flournoy's 6.46 Firebird, but in round two, a 5.78/253.52 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.76/245. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 5.75/256.99 qualified #4. In round one, he beat Paul Smith's 5.99/230 with a 5.76/253.66. A second round 5.89/241.80 advanced when Head got out of shape and crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, a 5.86/245.40 beat Johnny West's 5.94/244 in the "Hawaiian." That put him in the final against McEwen. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost with an 8.37/94.59 while the "Goose" took the victory with a 5.78/249. Meyer qualified #5 with a 5.83/242.65 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. At the end of June, he was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.84/240.64 qualified #5 for the show. In the first round, Billy's ailing 9.22/91.53 advanced when Bruce Larson smoked the tires and shut off. In the second round, he fouled away a 5.81 and lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.67. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Billy qualified #4 with a 5.66/255.82. He beat Head in the first round, but in the second round the Mustang broke on the line giving Hoover a free ride into the semifinals. He lost early at the NHRA Mile High Nationals as well, after qualifying #6 with a 5.91/191.53. Meyer qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.88/245.23. It was dreaded because if you qualified in that spot, you faced the number one qualifier in your first race. That's exactly what Billy did, but he lucked out when low qualifier Bernstein fouled away a 5.81 while Meyer motored into the second round with a 6.12/180.00. In the second round, he ran a 5.96/238.09 that lost to Hoover's 5.91/256.

Notes: Darrell drove this car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.709/254.45 qualified #15. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one, 5.729/250.48 to 10.16, before losing to eventual winner Dale Pulde in round two, 5.45/268 to 5.723/255.17. Darrell qualified #14 at Gainesville in the Trans Am at 5.737/254.30. In round one, he lost to Don Prudhomme, 5.55/267 to 5.789/259.59. He qualified #12 for the IHRA Texas Nationals in April with a 5.63/264.86. He improved to 5.472 in the first round before falling off to 5.53/257.28 in round two and losing to Tripp Shumake's 5.43/258. Darrell qualified #13 at Atlanta with a 5.937/254.59. In round one, he lost to Jim Head, 5.65/253 to 5.889/246.44. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 5.80/255.97 qualified #6 in the eight car field. In the opening round, the car broke and slowed to 6.96/139.10 in a loss to Head's 5.98/245. In Memphis, Darrell qualified on the bump at 5.837/260.34. In round one, he lost to Tim Grose, 5.62/258 to 6.236/186.14. He qualified #13 at Baton Rouge (only 13 cars showed) at 6.074/238.15. Don Prudhomme got to him again in round one, 5.49/267 to 5.920/248.55. Despite losing early at the Cajun Nationals, he sat in ninth spot at this time in NHRA FC points. He wasn't far behind Tom Hoover (1,856 to 1,725 in point) who sat eighth in points. In the second week of July, he was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.80 qualified #6, and in the first round, his engine-blowing 7.88/107 lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch's 5.75. Darrell was also on the bump spot at Brainerd, qualifying at 6.089/221.62. In round one, he improved to 5.979/233.16 but lost to Scott Kalitta's 5.59/262. In mid-September, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. His 5.96/222.77 qualified #7 for the eight car show and he lost early in eliminations. Darrell was the second alternate at the Houston Supernationals at 5.804/241.87. He skipped several events and raced at the World Finals. He was the fifth alternate at 5.805/221.83 but we think that was in his Ambition Corvette because Whit Bazemore had the former Ted Combis car and also DNQ'd at 6.005/221.67. We need confirmation of that. Photo from the 1988 IHRA Winternationals, Darlington, South Carolina.

Notes: In January, Hoover started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He was driving his new Firebird Trans Am. It was an eight-car field, and he ran 5.91/227.27 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.97/238.09 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.95/238. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.68/252.31. In the first round, both Hoover and Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car ran 5.76 (Hoover at 229.65), but Oswald won. On March 15, Tom was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 5.81/248.61 (Top Speed). He advanced to the final, where he faced Jim Head. In the final, he slowed to 6.01/228, which lost to Jim's 5.66 track record pass. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.68/254.16. Once again, Hoover lost in round one, when Kenny Bernstein's 5.58/261 beat his 5.73/252.88. He didn't race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race. Hoover was back in Atlanta on April 26 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.76/254.38 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 5.99/233.34 advanced when Tom McEwen exploded a supercharger. In the second round, his 5.88/231.36 lost to McCulloch's 5.66/260. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lost to Oswald in the first round. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as it was postponed one week due to rain and run on May 31, the same day Tom was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Tom sold the car to Gary Page in England. Tom ran a confirmed 260.94 at Englishtown 87. Where was the 264 run? He went 5.87/234 at the AHRA Spokane Finals 8/87. Photo from Columbus 1987. | Update on "264 run" He ran that in his #1 Qualifying performance at Ennis during the Motorcraft Funny Car Challenge on 8/1/87 with a 5.592 ET. - Rob McCabe
