Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Beadle qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.58/259.51. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 12.44 while his opponent, Graeme Cowin advanced with a 5.74/261. | March 6/8, Raymond would compete at the Coca Cola Funny Car Classic at Ennis where he would qualify #1 with a 5.514/254.0. In round 1 on a Single he ran 5.510/263.92. In the Semis Beadle got another single as Henry Phillips had to put a replacement body on the chassis after disintegrating the original body, however Henry's team felt the body was "inadequate to deal with potential 5.60/240 runs." & thus, didn't run against Beadle & Beadle ran 5.86/256.84 in the solo. He would race Steve Hodkinson in the final where Beadle would win with a 5.63/256.19. | On March 15 he was at Atlanta or a six-car show. He qualified #5 with a 6.22/240.00 and another 6.22 in the first round, loss to Jim Head's 5.94. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.64/256.62 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he lost when he smoked the tires against Head in the first round. Beadle lent the "Blue Max" to Tom McEwen to drive at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. McEwen did pretty well with it finishing runner-up to Kenny Bernstein. Back at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, it was a light field, and Raymond's 6.17/242.71 qualified #14 for the show. He lost to Texas neighbor, Billy Meyer's 5.71/254 in the first round, with a 6.21/215.31. Beadle qualified #15 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with an 8.95/170.13 as only sixteen-cars showed. He ran 8.74/97.79 to advance past the first-round when Mike Dunn failed to show. In the second round, Beadle smoked the tires to a 6.10/250, but it was still enough to get past Henry Phillips. He smoked the tires again in the semifinals, but this time he lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 5.57/261. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, Beadle ran 5.91/241.15 to qualify #11, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The "Blue Max" team did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were there at Englishtown for the Summernationals. Raymond qualified #13 with a 5.81/248.61. Another 5.81 at 248.68 in round one, lost to John Force's quick-leaving 5.85/252.

Notes: Photo from 1987 Winston All-Stars race at Texas Motorplex. West qualified #5 with a career-best 5.543 at 260.86. West qualified #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.63/255.39. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.83/250.48 lost to low-buck racer Steve Hodkinson's 5.74/241. On March 15, the "Hawaiian" team went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. A 5.90/241.93 qualified #3. West ran 6.17/204.08 in the first round, to beat a tire-smoking Paul Smith, but the run was costly as it hurt the motor, and he was unable to return to run in the semifinals. A week later(March 22), they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There a 5.67/257.65 qualified #8. An easy 5.79/242.19 beat Scott Kalitta's off=pace 6.21/185 in round one. Johnny's 5.81/248.48 beat Jim Head's smokey,6.75/119. Ed McCulloch also smoked the tires against him in the semifinals, and West's 5.76/252 advanced. However, all was not rosy as West had spun a bearing in his semifinal win. The team had to install a new "bullet" for the final, and in their haste, they failed to torque down the cylinder heads properly. Their final-round opponent was Don Prudhomme. Shortly after leaving, the line and "Hawaiian" broke, leaving the "Snake" all alone to run 5.72/260 for his first victory since '82. As mentioned above, he ran a career-best 5.543/263.92 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star event. In the first round, he faced the low qualifier, Kenny Bernstein, and despite running 5.64/227.79, he lost to Bernstein's "Batmobile" at 5.39/263. The next stop was at Firebird Raceway for the Coor's Funny Car race. Ten cars were there that were to make two runs each. The two Low ET cars would then meet in the final. In West's first race, his 6.23/186.33 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.22/231. He picked up to 5.95/231.95 to win his second race when Tom McEwen crossed the centerline. Only two cars had run fives, his and John Force, who had run 5.88 and 5.85 to reach the final. Both made strong runs in the final as both crossed the stripe at 5.89 (West at 225.56), but Force got the "win" light. It was then back to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Johnny ran 5.78/244.63 to qualify the #8 beat he lost in the opening round to Kalitta. Famoso held its Bakersfield Meet on May 3, and West qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 5.82/231.36. But in round one, his 6.10/225.00 held to the eventual winner Force, at 5.65/264. The team got a shot in the arm at Tulsa International for its annual Spring race. It was another eight-car show, and West qualified #2 with a 5.92/240.64. An opening round 6.00/238.72 beat Ron Dudley's 6.17/237, and he had a close race with Prudhomme in the semifinals that saw both run 6.04 (West at 240.64), but Johnny took the win. He faced Darrell Amerson in the final, and Darrell had just turned a career-best 5.93 in winning his semifinal race. But the run had been costly, and Darrell was a no-show, so West singled for the victory with a 5.94/243.24. The "Hawaiian" was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals near the end of May. Only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field, and West qualified last at 12.16/68.22. But the race was postponed one week due to rain. Crew chief Roland Leong could not return for the rain date, so Johnny had to work double duty. Things worked out pretty well. A first-round 5.65252.03 stoppedMcEwen's 6.11/237. A second-round 5.63/256 halted the "Snake's" 5.81/250, and in the semifinals, his 5.68/253 beat Jim Head's troubled 7.42/132. He faced Bernstein in the final, which was the end of the run for West. A 5.99/233.83 finished second best to Kenny's 5.76/258. Confirmed 263.69 at Ennis TX 10/87. Did Johnny go 5.501 at NHRA Maple Grove? We think that is a misprint because Mark Oswald is credited with Low ET there at 5.512. | At Englishtown on 8/30/87 during the K-Mart/Polaroid US All Pro Funny Car Championships, it had read that Johnny Ran 5.359 against John Force in the 2nd Round. However, it was discovered a malfunction Time stop Photocell had shaken loose from the fastener due to the turbulence from West's car & stopped the clocks (Report from 9/6/87 copy of Raceway News). - Rob McCabe

He improved to 6.17/237.46 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to Johnny West's 6.00/238 in the "Hawaiian." Ron qualified #15 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.96/245.29. He lost to Billy Meyer in the first round when he crossed the centerline. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, his career-best (to this point) 5.787/263.85 qualified #11. Unfortunately, he again lost in the opening round, this time to Mike Dunn. Shortly after that, he went to Kansas City for its Summernationals. Ron's 6.22 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in the first round, he lost to Doc Halladay. Photo from Indy 1987.

Notes: In Jan, Johnson was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.83/245.23. He was up against Paul Smith driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo in the first round. Rick went into some hard tire shake and shut off. He started his '85 NHRA season by qualifying #8 with a 5.84/250.69 at Pomona for the Winternationals. Rick beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.66/259.81, and in round two, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.58/263.62 that beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/235. He failed to back up the ET for a new national record. In the semifinals, his 5.92/249 lost to eventual winner Al Segrini's 5.79/253. Atlanta held an eight-car show on March 10, and Johnson qualified #1 with a 5.79/251.39. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 5.71/256.41 over a tire-smoking Ed McCulloch. In the semifinals, it was he who smoked the tires, and he lost to Smith's 6.36/220. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.72/255.82. But in round one, he fouled against Tom Hoover. Rick was back at Firebird on April 6 for the Coors Funny Car Championships. All eight cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. A first-round 6.44/237.46 lost to John Force's 5.89/202, and in his second race, his 6.02/252.10 (Top Speed), lost to Gary Densham's 6.03/231. But he made the final when Force had a blower explode in his second race and could not run the final. So once again, Johnson lined up against Densham. Once again, Gary won; this time, his 5.98/238 got him the victory over Rick's 6.06/252.10 runner-up effort. He qualified #3 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.81/256.99 (Top Speed), but bad luck hit him in the first round, when he lost a blower belt against Ron Correnti. Things went well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he dominated the eight-car Funny Car program. Rick set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.72/254.33. A 5.76/252 beat Jim Dunn in round one, and in the semifinals, he beat Jim's son Mike with a 5.94/247 over the younger Dunn's 5.98/242. He took the victory with a 5.94/241.28 over Densham's 6.34/234 Daytona in the final. On May 11, he was at Firebird Raceway for a best-of-three-match race against Force. Unfortunately, he lost two straight with times of 5.97/244.56 and 5.93/240.90 compared to John's 5.83/243 and 5.79/240. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.89/251.81. A first-round 6.01/245.09 beat Jody Smart, but in round two, his 6.03/242.58 lost to Force's 5.97/244. The "Hawaiian" made a rare IHRA appearance at Bristol for the Springnationals. Rick qualified #10, but he lost early. Next, he was off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.81/251.25 qualified #4, but a quick-leaving John Collins beat Rick's 5.90/249.03 in the first round, with a 5.93/241. He then made the long tow to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals pay off by winning his first NHRA National event. He was running well, making laps of 5.76, 5.77, and 5.79 in qualifying, so it was apparent, he was tough. Rick's 5.76 at 254.38 was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. Round one saw his 5.91/251.25 beat Smith's 6.04/249 in the "Custom Body" car. A 5.87/248.20 took care of Billy Meyer in round two, and a semifinal 5.69/250.13 beat John Lombardo's 5.86/250 in the "Blue Max." In the final, he was up against Bernstein, and the two had a good race with Johnson's 5.72/260.26 (Top Speed and a new track record) getting the victory over Kenny's 5.79/250. Invented the lovely "cowcatcher" nose piece to answer Kenny Bernstein's 1985 long-nose Ford Tempo body. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1985. He was the quickest car in the sport for most of the 1985 season until Bernstein went 5.55 at Rockingham Fall. Ran 5.985/235.60 in runner-up effort at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway 8/85.

Notes: Photo from Columbus, Oh. -1987. Scott switched from his Mustang bodied car of '86 to the Oldsmobile Firenza for '87. He started the year at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car show and Kalitta had problems running a best of 6.37 that failed to qualify. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but ended up as the sixth alternate for the show with a best of 5.93/229.53. | Scott would then go to the Coca Cola Funny Car Classic at the Texas Motorplex where Scott Qualified 4th in the 7 car field with a 5.815/236.40. In round 1 Scott would get a single after #7 Qualifier Gary Densham broke. In the Semis he faced #5 Qualifier Steve Hodkinson where Scott won with a 5.79/263.46, however Scott scorched the Rod Bearings in that run & couldn't make the Final against #1 Qualifier Raymond Beadle & therefore, Hodkinson would get reinstated. | At the NHRA Gatornationals, Scott qualified on the "bump" with a 5.89/246.50. An off-pace 6.21/185.83 in the first round, lost to Johnny West's 5.79/242 in the "Hawaiian." He had no trouble qualifying for the next NHRA race, the Southern Nationals, when only sixteen-cars showed to fill the sixteen spots available. Kalitta ran 8.82/155.89 to qualify #16. In the first round, he surprised West by beating him with a 5.75/240.51. In round two Scott had problems and slowed to 6.30/227.21, but still won when Don Prudhomme smoked the tires and then shut off. Kalitta's run came to an end in the semifinals where he lost to John Force. He was at Rockingham on May 3 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he lost to Jim Head in the first round. The next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, again had only sixteen-cars show. Scott's 6.86/149.92 qualified #12. The event was postponed one week due to rain and Kalitta was unable to return for the rain date. The rain date was on May 31 which was the day IHRA held it's Springnationals at Bristol. Scott chose to race there instead. Unfortunately, he lost to low qualifier, Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals where the best of 6.04/242.98 was good for the second alternate. The Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove was Scott's next stop. A 5.92 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but in the first round, Jerry Caminito stepped up to a 5.93/241 that beat his 5.97/239.36. He followed the NHRA tour up to Canada for the Grandnationals, where only fifteen Funny Car's showed. Scott ran an easy 6.22/229.70 to qualify #12. In the first round his 6.04/233.76 lost to Prudhomme's 6.00/225. RH

Notes: This car was literally put together in the pits at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals by Mike Hamby and Dale Pulde. On the car's maiden run, Dale ran 6.10/183. After some adjustments to the spoiler, he came back out and ran 6.01/247. On his first official qualifying pass and third run ever on the car, Pulde blasted it to a 5.91/252.80. On Saturday, he ran an amazing 5.76/263 in the heat of the day (85 degrees). Then during the "Night of Fire," Dale ran 5.69/256.41 to take the pole. Pulde went on to win by beating Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.71/260. He ran 5.68/260 in the second round to beat John Collins. Another 5.69 at 257 beat Kenny's quicker 5.66 (Low ET) at 258 in the semifinal. In the final, he ran Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" broke on the line, and Pulde took the victory. They next towed to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a 5.97/252.38 qualified #13. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, with a 5.86/251. In the second round, Pulde's tire-smoking 6.56/152.18 lost to Bernstein's 5.74/249. The "High Life Warrior" picked up another win at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. Dale qualified #1 with a 5.66/249.30. A first-round 5.84/236.84 beat Dominic Santucci, and in the semifinals, he beat Joe Amato's 5.98/221 with a 5.70/249.30. In the final, he beat Bernstein with a 5.90/247.25. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Dale ran 5.89/253.23 to qualify #12. Ed McCulloch fouled against him in the opening round, and he advanced with a 5.82/248.48. But in round two, he smoked the tires once again and lost to Don Prudhomme. The following week (July 7), he was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #1, and his 5.78/252 beat Tim Grose's 5.85/233 for yet another victory in the final. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.71/249 qualified #5, and in round one, his 5.78 advanced when Ron Correnti shut off with problems. But in round two, the car went into a wheelstand, and he lost to eventual winner Bernstein. He then went to St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals, and he bagged that one as well, stopping John Pott in the final. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Pulde qualified #1 by resetting both ends of the track record with a 5.73/251.39. He ran 5.87/238.09 he beat Jim Head in the opening round. A round two 5.83/244.56 beat Rick Johnson's 6.04/229 in the "Hawaiian." Another 5.83 at 245.23 stopped a tire-smoking John Force in the semifinal. Once again, he faced the red and white "Budweiser King" of Bernstein in the final. The two had a great race that saw Pulde's 5.81/250.69 come out second best to Kenny's 5.79/245. | At the NHRA Castrol GTX Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, Pulde qualified #2 with a 5.612/255.24. He Defeated #10 qualifier Graeme Cowin in round 1 with a 5.651/251.53 & #6 qualifier John Force in round 2 with a 5.722/246.44, but lost to #8 qualifier & eventual winner Tim Grose in the Semis. | Photo from Milan, MI, 1985.

Notes: Ed qualified #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/253.52. In the first round, his 5.82/240.64 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.69/250. Luck was on the "Ace's side at the NHRA Gatornationals. He didn't qualify very well, with a 5.98/233.16 (#14). He went on to win the race by beating Brad Tuttle in the first round, where they both ran 5.74 (Ed at 257.58). In round two, his troubled 6.67/197.36 advanced when Mark Oswald boiled the hides in the "Candies and Hughes" car. His tire-smoking, off-pace 6.22/234 beat Scott Kalitta in the semifinals, putting him in the final against another long-time veteran, Tom McEwen. The "Mongoose" had to be considered the favorite based on his 5.67 in the semifinals. Unfortunately, McEwen broke, and the race never came off, so Ed singled for the title with an 11.25/69.63. Due to the Gatornationals being rain-delayed from March 16 to 23, Ed could not run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as they were booked on the same day. He did make IHRA's second race, the Bayou Nationals, on April 13. He made it into the final before losing to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. A week later, he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.86/256.41. He won, but once again, good old racing luck played a part. He beat McEwen in the first round, and in round two, his 6.02/242 got around Billy Meyer's 6.12/244 in a tire-smoking contest. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.95/252.10 when the "Blue Max," with John Lombardo on board, broke a transmission. In the final, the "Ace" lined up with Jim Head. Jim had been having his share of problems, running 6.22 and 8.38 in the previous two rounds. The two left together in the final, and Ed got the victory with a 6.00/247.52 over Head's right there 6.00/250. It was a short field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun National in June. The sixteenth qualifier ran 11.84 and still made the show! McCulloch qualified #14 with a 6.54/168.28. He slowed to a 6.65/162.68 in the first round, which lost to Kalitta's 5.80/252. Crewchief Bernie Fedderly was still having trouble dialing in the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15. A best of 6.00/231.12 qualified #12, but Ed lost to McEwen in the first round. A week later (June 22), the team was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Once again, McEwen beat him, but this time it was in the semifinals. Only twelve cars showed for the eliminator at the NHRA Grandnationals, so qualifying was easy. Ed qualified #9 with a 5.92/249.03. His first-round 5.94/250.69 lost to Johnny West's 5.78/234 in the "Hawaiian." July opened with the team at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.91/247.93 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Ed got a measure of satisfaction in the first round, when his 6.01/245.90 beat a tire-smoking McEwen. But in the semifinals, he lost to Oswald. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Fedderly tuned the car to a 5.88/244.69 in qualifying (#13). But in round one, the "Mongoose" McEwen stopped him. Ed qualified really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 5.87/234.19 got the #4 spot in the thin air. Unfortunately, he again lost in the first round, this time to Steve Hodkinson. By this time, the team needed something good to happen. And it did. They rolled into Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals in the middle of August. Ed qualified so-so with a 5.88/249.30 for the #8 spot in the show. He beat Della Woods in the first round, with a 5.96/241.93. A 5.86/254 beat West in round two, and his 5.98/252 beat a tire-smoking Oswald in the semifinals. That put him in the final with his nemesis McEwen. Ed had problems and shut off to a 22.44/30.82 while Tom motored to the victory with a 5.81/254. Still, it was a good showing for the "Miller American" team. There was one more stop before Indy, which was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Ed qualified #6 in the eight-car show and beat Head in round one, before losing to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Then it was on to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Ed always ran well at Indy, but not so much in '86. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.88/245.73. In the first round, he survived a tire-smoking battle with Craig Epperly that saw Ed's 6.41/243 beat Craig's quicker 6.34/220. In the second round, McCulloch ran 5.92/226.52, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to Oswald's 5.64/260. The following week (September 7), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #4, but he lost in round one. The team then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Ed's 5.80/251.04 qualified #6. Another 5.80 at 246.30 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.91/235 in the opening round. In round two, eventual winner Oswald ran 5.65/262 to beat McCulloch's 5.85/235.17.

Notes: Raced this car at the Winters, the Fallnationals, and the World Finals. Qualified #11 at the Winters at 5.68/248.48, then beat Mike Dunn in round one, at 5.80/246 and Steve Hodkinson (shut off) in round two before losing to Kenny Bernstein in the semis, 5.56/263 to 5.75/253. Dale qualified #12 at the Fallnationals at 5.75/252. He beat a fouling Mike Dunn in round one, but lost to Raymond Beadle in round two, 5.83/218 to an off pace 6.61/150. At the World Finals, Dale qualified 10th with a 5.569/262.92. He again beat Mike Dunn in round one, 6.17 to 6.32, and Don Prudhomme in round two with an improved 5.516/260. Dale got a flat tire on the burnout round three, sending Ed McCulloch's 5.48/268 into the final.

Notes: AKA the US Male. Photo from Columbus 1988. Sherman qualified #14 at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.78. Unfortunately, he lost to Tim Grose in the first round. He was at Atco in June for the IHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 5.96/239.80. He improved to 5.85/243.90 in the first round, to beat John Force who broke. But a semifinal, 5.93/234.98 lost to eventual winner Bruce Larson's 5.74/248. Best NHRA speed is 262.92 at NHRA Maple Grove. Did RC run 268 mph somewhere this year?

Notes: The car had that wild "shovel" nose on it, also ran it in '86. This car is the one Billy used 3 spark plugs per cylinder on until outlawed by NHRA. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway in January, Meyer had his supercharger explode on a 5.84/218.44 qualifier. The brand-new Mustang body was blown to pieces, and he received slight burns to his forehead. He was done for the day. Billy started the '85 NHRA season by qualifying #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with final attempt, 6.03/239.36. Billy lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. He destroyed another Mustang body at Atlanta on March 10. He was there for an eight-car show where he qualified #8 with a 6.42/223.88. In the first round, he beat a tire-smoking Pulde with a 5.82/240.00, but in the lights, the blower exploded and took the Mustang body with it. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Billy lasted until round two where Ed McCulloch's 5.91/254 beat his 5.97/243. A best of 5.93/229.00 failed to qualify at the Gatornationals, but he rebounded with a runner-up finish at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. In the semifinal, he stopped Kenny Bernstein's 5.95/243 with a 5.88/250. In the final, he faced Pulde, and they both ran 5.80 (Billy at Top Speed of the meet, 261.62), but Dale got the win. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he qualified #8 with a 5.93/208.04. A 5.99/250.00 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/224. In round two, he got out of shape and shut off in a loss to John Lombardo's 5.91/246 in the "Blue Max.” Meyer lost early at the next NHRA race as well, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3 with a 5.84/247.38, but in the first round, he crossed the centerline while racing Ron Correnti. Things weren't much better at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Billy made another final round appearance at the NHRA Springnationals in June. He qualified #6 with a 5.83/236.22 and beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.89/231.60. A second-round 5.81/242.06 beat a tire-smoking John Force and in the semifinals, a 5.82/241.54 beat John Collins' 5.94/244. In the final, Bernstein's 5.81/251 beat Meyer tire-smoking run. Only 15 cars showed up for the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but Billy still ran hard in qualifying running a 5.704/256.70 for the #2 spot. He smoked the tires hard in the first round, with a 6.05/254.09, but still beat Head, who blew an engine. He lost to eventual winner Rick Johnson driving the "Hawaiian" in round two. He was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he lasted until the semifinals. After that, he made the trip to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.80, but he lost to Tim Grose in the opening round. It was then off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Meyer's 5.96 at only 205.94 qualified #7. He beat Cal Jackson in the first round, with a 6.59/153.73 before losing to John Force's 5.95/243 with a 5.99/222.77 in the next round. He then went to Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Billy qualified #4 and ran 5.806/250.00 and 5.889/245.23 to reach the semifinals where he lost to Pulde.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Did Johnny go 5.427/268.65 somewhere this year (perhaps a match race at Englishtown?) Seems very quick. Listing his best NHRA times until we get confirmation. | West's first time out driving for Roland Leong was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The team did pretty well, qualifying #8 with a 5.775/255.68 and running an even better 5.749/256.41 to beat Tripp Shumake's 5.85/237 in the first round. In the second round, he ran Dale Pulde, but West crossed the centerline on his run and was disqualified. They qualified #8 again at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.87/256.55. Unfortunately, West smoked the tires to a 6.35/250.13 loss to Scott Kalitta's also traction plagued 6.22/186. At Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Johnny qualified #8 (again) with a 5.86/251.25. He beat Bruce Larson in round one, and a 6.84/244.83 advanced into the semifinals when John Force crossed the centerline. In the semis, he fouled against Jim Head. Famoso held an eight-car Funny Car show for its Bakersfield March (May) Meet. Roland and crew were there and West ran a 5.88/252.10 to qualify #5. He faced low qualifier Force in the first round, and his 5.84 lost to Force's 5.80. Baton Rouge and the Cajun Nationals was NHRA's next stop and a 6.01/243.70 qualified Johnny #10. He picked up to a 5.83/252.59 in the first round, to beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.88/237. He lost traction in round two, but his 6.13/240.89 still beat Scott Kalitta's 6.87/145. In the semifinals, Johnny's 5.94/244.43 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.86/245. On June 15 they were at Columbus, Ohio, for the NHRA Springnationals. West qualified the car #6 with a 5.83/251.46 and beat Gary Phillips in the first round, but he lost in round two. They made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and Johnny qualified #2 with a 5.84/252.10 behind Bernstein's 5.62 (Low ET). A first-round 5.91/251.39 beat Jerry Caminito and in the semifinals, a 5.90/249.30 beat Kalitta's 6.05/240. In the final, he met Bernstein and the Daytona broke, giving Kenny a solo for the victory. At the end of June, the were up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The "Hawaiian" was making some horsepower there as he ran a 5.74 at a whopping 261.93 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. West ran a first-round 5.78/234.86 over Ed McCulloch's 5.94/250. In round two, a 5.79/259.21 beat a tire smoking Tom McEwen, but in the semifinals, he fouled against Bernstein.
