Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1986. Doc qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.65/255.31. Unfortunately, he got out of shape against Tim Grose in the first round and crossed the centerline. Halladay qualified well at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but he lost in round one. He raised some eyebrows at Gainesville, where he laid down a 5.649/254.59 to qualify #5 for the NHRA Gatornationals. To put that into perspective, he qualified ahead of names such as Don Prudhomme, Billy Meyer, Tom McEwen, and John Force. He beat John Martin in the opening round with a 5.81/223.93, but in round two, he slipped to a 5.95/241.28 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.59/263. In April, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.83/245.76. He faced Ed McCulloch in the first round, and Ed smoked the tires. It looked as though Halladay would win easily, but then he broke and blower belt. Ed's 6.01/252 came past to win over Doc's 6.17/186.37. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.01/240.64 beat Steve Hodkinson. He lost to eventual winner Bernstein in the semifinals. Tulsa held its yearly independent Spring race, and Doc qualified #1 for the eight-car show with a 5.89 (Low ET) at 241.28. Once again, he beat Hodkinson in the opening round, this time with a 6.22/200.89. But in the semifinals, Darrell Amberson stepped up to run a career-best 5.93/245 to beat Halladay's 6.14/238.09. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 for the eight-car field and defeated Amberson in round one. He lost in the semifinal to eventual winner Mike Dunn who was driving Joe Pisano's car. He won the Union Grove Olympics of Drag Racing event, stopping Mike Edstrom in the final. Doc earlier had set Low ET with a 5.79. It was then off to Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. Doc had qualified for every IHRA race of the season, and his 5.66 easily made the show. He then beat Pat Walsh with a 5.74/252.10 in the first round before smoking the tires in the semifinal and losing to Mark Oswald. He moved up to second in the IHRA Funny Car points chase behind Oswald with the semifinal finish. He competed at Brainerd for the Crown FC Championships, and while he failed to reach the final, he did run some good times, such as 5.90/251.39 in beating McEwen.

Notes: As a result of a horrific fire at the '94 US Nats, the Research Labs at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio conducted tests on fire-Extinguishing with assitance from Firefox Industries. Rick Howard took both photos, one of the car after the fire at Indy and the one for the brochure used by the Air Vehicle Structures Lab at WPAFB. Rick was Senior Safety Specialist during the tests and was required to monitor all tests. Test car was a Ford Probe built by Murf McKinney.

Notes: Smith finished runner-up to John Force at the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza. He lost traction and fell off to 7.36/125.87 to lose to John's 6.29/229.88. Paul earlier had run 6.13/216.86 in round one. Smith failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he was the second alternate at 6.17/241.02. He also raced at Rockingham in the first week of May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but lost early. Soon after, he was at Maple Grove for its Spring FC Nationals. Six cars ran with the two cars with the lowest ETs meeting in the final. Paul's 6.11/198.23 advanced to the final to face Bruce Larson. But in the final, the parachute fell out of the "Custom Body" car on the line, and Larson made a 6.28 solo for the victory. He did not race at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals but at Bristol early in June for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.02/223 in the first round fell to Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/260. He qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.04/241.80. In round one, an off-pace 6.68/139.44 lost to Tom McEwen's 5.92/240. His next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 cars showed, so qualifying was not much of an issue. He ran 5.91/224.21 for the #13 spot in the show. His 6.04/249.03 in the opening round lost to eventual winner Rick Johnson's 5.91/251 in the "Hawaiian." In mid-July, he returned to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 5.83 qualified #14. Unfortunately, he lost to John Collins in round one. He made his third IHRA start of the year at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #9, and in the first round, he beat McEwen with a 5.85/252.52. The car got out of shape against Bernstein in the second round, and Smith got disqualified for crossing the centerline. Paul qualified #15 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.95/248.61. He improved to a 5.85/253.52 in the opening round to beat McEwen's 5.97/243, and an even better 5.80/240.00 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/206 in round two. But he overpowered the track in the semifinals and smoked the tires in a loss to John Collins. His 5.734/255.24 qualified #5 for the NHRA U.S. Nationals at Indy. He slowed to 5.86/254.66 in the first round and lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.82/253. Shortly after, Smith was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.87/244.69. In the first round, both he and Johnson ran 5.75 (Smith at 251.25), but the "Hawaiian" won. The following week (September 22), he was at Englishtown for the U.S. All-Pro FC Championships. His 5.94 in the first round lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.89. He was at Darlington for the IHRA Stroh's Nationals in the first week of October. He qualified #7, and he made his way to the final. A 5.74/247.93 beat a tire-smoking Mark Oswald in round two, and his 5.81/242.58 defeated Billy Meyer in the semifinal. He lost to Bernstein in the final. Paul also ran 5.859/252.52 at IHRA Cincinnati. AKA Utica Flash.

Notes: Only seventeen cars showed up to qualify in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Kramberger's 5.89/251.81 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round, his 5.88/241.35 fell to Scott Kalitta's 5.57/265. He failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Frank was having all kinds of problems trying to get in a good run at Indy to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals. It didn't happen, as the best pass he could make was 10.84/82.25. He did get a little consolation when he won the award for "best appearing car." He didn't have much better luck the following week (September 10) at Darlington, where he was the fourth alternate for the eight-car field with a 6.52/198.42 best at the IHRA US Open Championships. Not many teams could say they picked up over four seconds from one week to the next. But he improved more at Maple Grove on September 17 for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. There, his 5.61/227.15 qualified on the "bump," but he broke against eventual winner John Force in the first round. Photo from Indy 1989.

Notes: Steve qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.740/255.17. Another 5.741 at 241.93 in the first round beat Johnny West's 5.83/250 in the "Hawaiian." Unfortunately, he broke in round two, advancing Dale Pulde. In May, he was at Tulsa for its Springnationals race. A 6.29/222.22 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. His 6.59/211.76 in the opening round fell to Doc Halladay's 6.22/200. Steve was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals near the end of May. He qualified #8 at 5.95/237.59. The race was postponed one week due to rain, and Hodkinson did not return for the "rain date" as he went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he smoked the tires in round one and lost to Mike Dunn. In the first week of June, he was at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. It was a tough weekend for him as he went through 24 pistons at this race. He qualified #6, and his 6.20/179.64 advanced in the first round when John Force broke. Unfortunately, Steve could not repair it in time for his semi-final race against Ed McCulloch. He was also at Kansas City International in July for its independent Summernationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.07 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Darrell Amberson which Steve lost. He attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals but ended up as the fourth alternate at 5.98/237.71. On August 1st, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the Motorcraft FC Challenge race. It was an eight-car show that was to have all eight make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In the first race, his 5.88/228.19 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.63/258. In the second race, he shut down but still won as Mark Oswald lost a blower belt and coasted across the line behind Hodkinson. His times were not quick enough to advance into the final. He went to Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, but his 6.01/237.65 best failed to qualify. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Open. In round one, he lost to Halladay. Steve's best times of the year were from NHRA Pomona. He ran an ad to sell T-shirts. Buyers would get names on car as sponsors in '87. Photo from 1987 US Nationals.

Notes: Day ran IHRA PHR Martin MI 1986 | In 1986, Norm came out with a new Corvette FC. His first NHRA National event with it was at Brainerd. In round one he was racing Tim Grose when his engine exploded just past the finish line. It was one of the worst Funny Car fires of that year. The chutes burned off and Norm hit the ditch where the car flipped and he was trapped inside. The safety crew had to punch a hole in the side of the car to get him out. Fortunately, Norm escaped with minor burns, but the car was destroyed. I posted a clip of it from ND. He stopped the timers with a 6.06/238.72 on the unfortunate pass. In qualifying, his 6.37/229.59 was #15 for the show.

Notes: Meyer started the '82 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.97/241.28. In the first round, his tire-smoking 6.38/240.64 beat Dennis Geisler. In the second round, he was upset as Doc Halladay's 6.10/234 beat his 6.18/238.72. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 6.13/239.99 qualified #12. He beat Mike Dunn's 6.31/232 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.29/237.46. But in round two, he lost to John Force. In April, he was at OCIR's 64 car show, where he reached the final only to have his 6.11 finish runner-up to Don Prudhomme's 6.00.The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Meyer qualified #1 for the tough eight-car field with a 5.89/249.30 (Top Speed). In the opening round, he slowed to 6.22/207.85 and lost to Paul Smith's 6.05/241 in the "Entertainer." He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.02 and lasted until the semifinals when he shut off due to tire shake and lost to John Pott in Larry Coogle's "Sting." Shortly after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he got another runner-up finish. His 6.38/247.23 (Top Speed) finished second best to Raymond Beadle's 6.35/233 in the "Blue Max." His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car field, and his 6.00/242.58 qualified #3. In the first round, Meyer's 6.09/244 beat Tripp Shumake's 6.21/235. But he smoked the tires in the semi-final and shut off against Prudhomme. He was also running really well at Columbus in mid-June for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 5.96/246.57 qualified second behind Prudhomme's 5.92/248. Meyer beat Smith in round one before losing to eventual winner Frank Hawley who was driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in round two. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He really found some horsepower as his 5.92/254.23 (Top Speed and a new track record) qualified second to Beadle's 5.88. He also ran 253.52 on an earlier qualifying pass. Although Meyer lost to Tom Anderson in the first round, his speed was tops for the meet, even better than the TF dragsters! He didn't run as well as he hoped to at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.08/240.64 qualified #6 in the eight-car show. In the first round, his 6.23/223.88 fell to Hawley's 6.10/224. The car continued to make power at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Billy qualified #1 and once again set Top Speed of the meet over TF cars as well with a 254.23. But he smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to John Pott. Doing it at the IHRA events was one thing, but when he got to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and did it again, well, that was another thing. He reset both ends of the NHRA record with backed-up 5.829/254.95 marks during qualifying. Once again, he had Top Speed of the meet as Mark Oswald had Top Speed for the TF cars with a 254.23. Billy then ran 5.89/250.69 in the first round over Hawley. But that dreaded tire smoke did him in for round two, where he dialed in too much power and lost to Mike Dunn in the "Hawaiian." Meyer was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of July. He set Low ET and Top Speed during qualifying at 6.12/240.00 (Top Speed over TF cars as well). His time would have qualified #5 for TF. He then defeated Rob Williams' 6.47 with a 6.14/236.22, and a 6.19/223.88 took out Kenny Bernstein's 6.17/233 in the semi-final. He faced the "Blue Max" in the final, and Beadle shut down to 6.85/149 while Meyer ran 6.16/235.60 for the victory. He almost followed that up with another win the week later (August 8), when he finished runner-up to Dale Pulde at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. Shortly after that, he was back at OCIR for its Summer Showdown event. Billy showed up with his new EXP and ran 6.07/217.38 on his first qualifying pass. On his second attempt, the car broke a rear end. He then unloaded his Firebird and used it in the race.In round one, his 5.92/251.39 (Top Speed) beat Jim Dunn's 6.29/231. Dunn's run qualified him for the semi-final as ten cars had run the first round, with the four lowest ETs advancing to the final four. So once again, the two raced with the same results. This time Meyer ran 5.98/249.30 over Jim's 6.24/213. He faced the Low ET car of John Lombardo in the final, and both had horrible runs, but Meyer's troubled 8.21/107 got the win over John's 10.17. He was nowhere near as fast as the TF dragsters at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Meyer continued to run his Firebird here as he would in all the remaining NHRA events. He qualified #4 for the eight-car show with a 5.98/250.00 (Top Speed), but at this event, Oswald reset the NHRA top fuel speed record to 256.41. Meyer's opponent, Anderson, fouled in the first round, so he advanced with a 6.18/218.96. In the semi-final, his 6.08/247.93 lost to eventual winner Hawley's 5.97/238. Billy became the second funny car over 250 on July 17, 1982, with a 250.69 at the NHRA Summernationals (second entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car). His 254.95 was the highest speed of the year except for Oswald's top fuel car, which went 256 and 255 (twice). | In May, at an OCIR open 8-car MD benefit event, Billy Meyer won FC, Johnny Abbott TF. That '97 at Pomona was off and on the throttle, tire shake. Bill Flournoy from '81 was still the CC at the beginning of the year. An NOS ad in May '82 prior to his OCIR/Muscular Dystrophy win said he'd been 252 in Ohio. Salem? A check out run at the MD event: 6.11/246. Meyer used a Larry Minor TF motor, Crower box and the whole nine, at the 64-FC OCIR events. On week two they removed the scoop for visibility. Absent week two: Burgin, Iverson, whose Camaro broke something expensive-sounding on the dry hop at the first one. - Joe Moore

Notes: The strip was so bad at Tucson on January 23 that Force qualified last in the eight-car field for the AHRA Winternationals with an 8.58. He lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the first round. At Pomona, Times were a little more normal for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.08/243.90 to qualify #5. In the first round, he improved to a 6.01/238.09 to beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." He round two, his 6.68/196.07 lost to Tom Anderson's 6.11/242. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.03/243.24. But in the opening round against Tim Grose, the car went into heavy tire shake, and John shut it down to an 8.39/104. At the NHRA Gatornationals, John ran an excellent 5.88/240.64 to qualify #3. He beat Al Segrini in the first round with a 6.18/227.27. But in round two, he fouled away a 5.95 against Mike Dunn. Not only had he fouled, but to add insult to injury, he didn't realize it, made a hard run, and blew the motor in the lights. The car went into a fireball that was quickly put out, and he was OK. Early in April, he was at OCIR for its 64-car show. All cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race, he smoked the tires and lost to Henry Harrison. In the second race, he did it again against Billy Meyer and shut down to 10.86. Needless to say, he did not run quick enough to reach the final. OCIR did it again the following week (April 9). The race was run in the same format. In the first race, John's 6.20/225.56 beat an engine-blowing Don Prudhomme. He set Low ET and Top Speed in his second race with a 5.91/248.61 that defeated Gary Densham. He lined up against Meyer in the final, and, unfortunately, he lost to Meyer's 6.06. NHRA held its Southern Nationals in Atlanta on April 17, and it was a hard field to break into as it was only an eight-car field. The drivers who failed to qualify included Ken Bernstein, Beadle, Meyer, Gary Burgin, Dale Pulde, and Mike Dunn. John made the show, running 5.94/241.93 for the #4 spot. In the first round, his 6.12/230.17 lost to Ken Veney's 6.03/233. John set Low ET and Top Speed of the Fuel Wars event at Fremont in April at 5.94/241 in the final but was considered the runner-up as Mike Miller won all three of his races. The other cars were the Pisano car and Dale Pulde. Winner of the OCIR Son of 64 Funny Car 4/83 with a 5.91. He was at Tulsa in early May for the AHRA Springnationals. A 6.88 qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Jim White in the first round. Shortly after, he was in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show; he was the first alternate at 6.10/237.46. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.08/239.36 qualified #12. An opening round 6.01/246.52 beat Bernstein's 6.25/237, but John could not stop and crashed the car into the catch net. The team repaired the car for round two but smoked the tires and shut it off to 10.37/69.82 in a loss to Mark Oswald's 6.18/241 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified in the field's top half (#4) with a 6.23/215.32, but he improved to 6.07/240.01 in the opening round over White. But again, he fell to that dreaded tire smoke in the semifinal, where he lost to Tom McEwen. Early in July, he traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. His 6.06/233.16 qualified #7 for the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.08/240 lost to Mark Oswald's controversial 5.62/240.At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, his 5.94/243.90 qualified #4.He ran 6.01/243.24 in the first round to beat Dunn's 6.11/229 in the "Hawaiian." A great light combined with a 6.03/241 in the second round defeated Veney's quicker 5.96/245.Prudhomme encountered tire shake against him in the semifinal and shut off while Force advanced with a 6.01/247. His string of 6.0s continued into the finals, but the 6.00/245.23 he ran finished runner-up to Oswald's 5.92/251.At the end of the month (July 30), he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 6.22/232.55. He and Beadle had a really close first-round race that saw John's 6.22/238.09 beat the "Blue Max's" 6.22/239. In the semifinal, he fell off to 6.40/193.13, losing to Anderson's 6.16/220. John won a summer match race event at OCIR with a 5.89 in the final. He also ran 5.78 at 249.30 at the OCIR World Finals, ending as runner-up to John Lombardo. He became the 8th and final entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car with a 250.69 pass at NHRA Indianapolis on September 3, 1983. Good stuff on the NHRA tour with competitive runs all over and best times of 5.782 at the OCIR Finals and the 250.69 at Indy. | Video link from AHRA Tucson 1983.

Notes: Raymond Beadle was having a tough time at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It took him three passes to qualify, and his 6.321/242.58 got him the #13 spot. In the first round, he smoked the tires to an 8.07 and lost to John Force. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.91/244.56. He improved to a 5.89/246.57 over Tom McEwen in the first round. In round two, his 6.19/213.77 lost to Frank Hawley's 5.93/241 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The following week, he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.43/215.82. Beadle beat Billy Meyer and Gary Burgin to gain a final round berth against Kenny Bernstein. In the final, his 6.39/215.97 finished runner-up to Bernstein's 6.21/227. Atlanta held an eight-car show near the end of March, and, unfortunately, Raymond failed to qualify for the show. He was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17. It was another eight-car field, and once again, he failed to qualify with a 6.31 best. Things went better a week later (April 24) at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Beadle qualified #2 with a 5.99 behind Dale Pulde's 5.98 (Low ET). The two worked their way into the final, where Pulde's 6.11 got the victory over the "Blue Max's" 6.20. Raymond got another runner-up finish at the next IHRA event, the World Nationals at Norwalk, where Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car stopped him in the final. Beadle also failed to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 6.13/241.93 was far short of the 6.08 it took to make the eight-car field. Oswald got him again at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Beadle qualified #3, and a solo 6.65/187.89 made it past a broken Al Segrini in round one, but he lost to Oswald in the semifinals. Beadle won his 11th NHRA National event when he won the Springnationals at Columbus. He had set Low ET and a track record 5.88 at 238.64 in qualifying #1 for the field. He then ran 5.97/235.60 over Ken Veney and 6.28/180.36 over a broken Segrini. His opponent, Gary Burgin, smoked the tires in the semifinals, and Raymond's 6.10/228.42 advanced. Once again, he faced Oswald for the title, and his 6.95/238.09 got him the victory over Mark's 6.27/235. He then won the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan, beating Bernstein in the final. He set Top Speed with his 251.39 pass. The following week (July 17) found the "Blue Max" team at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Beadle qualified #6 with a 5.95/233.76. A quick-leaving 6.14/236.84 beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.10/238 in the opening round, but in round two, the car ruptured an oil pan while staging against Don Prudhomme. The next NHRA race was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. It was an eight-car show, and Beadle's 6.08/238.09 qualified #4. Both he and Force ran 6.22 (Raymond at 239.38) in their first-round race, but Force got to the other end first. Beadle did not race at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, as he chose to race at Spokane instead for the AHRA World Finals that was run the same weekend. It was just an eight-car field, and he qualified #2 behind Force. The two of them would make their way into the final. An easy 6.26/238.72 in the opening round defeated a tire-smoking Gary Densham, and in the semifinal, Raymond's 5.92/241.93 beat Tom McEwen, who also smoked the tires. It looked like Force would that an easy win in the final as he had run 5.79 twice during eliminations. But Beadle picked up to a 5.78/247.93 to win the race over Force's 5.91/220. It had to be upsetting for the "Blue Max" team to be watching the Big Bud Shootout at Indy on September 4 and not being a part of the show. The exclusive eight-car show was held during qualifying and only the top eight qualifiers from the past year ran. But the next day, Beadle's team showed them what they could do. A 5.83/251.39 qualified #3, and Beadle set Low ET in the opening round with his 5.804 at a booming 254.95 that beat Paul Gordon. In round two, his 5.91/245.23 beat Hawley's 6.02/235. But his quicker 5.87/247.93 lost to eventual winner Bernstein's 5.90/254 in the semifinal. The next weekend (September 11), the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. Beadle ran 5.89/250 to qualify low for the eight-car field, and he lasted until the semifinal before Oswald's 5.83/253 put his 5.84/252 on the trailer in a close race. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Fallnationals. Beadle ran well again, running 5.84/252.10 to qualify #2 behind Oswald's 5.74/253. This was a critical race for the "Max." Going into this race, Beadle led the IHRA Funny Car points chase by 54 points over Oswald. They both survived their first-round races, but Beadle smoked the tires in the semifinal and lost to Dale Pulde. Oswald went on to win the race and the IHRA Funny Car points Championship. Even with the loss, the "Blue Max" was running some numbers; 5.7's were becoming more and more frequent as well as 250 mph runs. Case in point, at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 2, Beadle's 5.779/251.39 claimed the pole for the eight-car field. He got lucky in the opening round when his crossed-up 6.31/240.64 advanced over Bernstein's troubled 13.13. In the semifinal, he was back on pace with a 5.767/249.30 that defeated Hawley's 5.95/220. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Billy's 5.757/245 get the victory over Raymond's 5.78/246.57. Raymond became the 7th member of the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car with a 251.39 pass on July 10, 1983, at IHRA Milan, Michigan.

Notes: Talk about a bad way to start your new year. John was in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. On Friday the 13th, he crashed his Camaro into the guardrail during qualifying. He was OK, but the car was not as he failed to qualify. The damage was not too bad as he had the car running at Firebird Raceway at the end of the month for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He didn't reach the finals there, but he ran well enough to beat the "Hawaiian" with Mike Dunn onboard. He was one of four cars running at Sacramento's East-West meet, where he was declared the winner after beating Gary Densham, who had his reverser explode in the final. At Pomona, his 5.92/249.30 qualified #9. He and Kenny Bernstein had a close first-round race that saw Force's 5.89/247.93 come out on top over Kenny's 5.90/251. He got to solo in round two when Don Prudhomme shut off with problems. John advanced with a 5.92/249.30. In the semi-finals, he lost a tire-smoking dual with Al Segrini. He stopped at Carlsbad and drove the "L.A. Hooker" in an eight-car show but lost to Bryan Ranes in the opening round. The week before Gainesville, he was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. His 6.19/239.36 qualified #6. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.54 in a loss to Segrini's 5.88. He qualified #9 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.89/247.93. Once again, the car went up in smoke, but his 6.55/245.90 still beat Tim Grose, who blew an engine at 6.79/142. In round two, he lost to John Collins. The following week (March 25), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Qualifying wasn't a problem as only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Still, Force ran 5.95 for the #5 spot in the field. In round one, a 5.96/242.55 beat Jim Head, but a 6.00/241 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.93/241 in round two. Things did not go too well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Force failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. In the first week of May, he was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coors 32 car show. Denny Savage was supposed to run John in the final but he had hurt his engine and Gary Thompson took his place. It didn't make a difference to Force, who had set Low ET at 5.98 and then ran 6.07 for the victory. He then won the Bakersfield March Meet that was now held in May. He "only" qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 5.98, but he beat low qualifier Ed McCulloch in the first round with a 5.95/245. He smoked the tires in the final, but his 6.49/239 held up to win over a crossed-up Tom McEwen. John also ran 5.80 at ADRA Eunice LA in 9/84, 5.92/245.90 at Gary US 30, and 5.94/252.80 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. Photo from Indy 1984. | Ran 5.76 over Jim Dunn's 6.02 at a Carlsbad match race in May 1984. Frazier and Force were surprising non-qualifiers at Indy, running 5.958/249.30 against a 5.939 bump spot. - Joe Moore

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. | After a great season in '84, Jim returned to the Funny Car wars in '85 hoping for more. He started the season by qualifying #12 with a 5.94/249.44 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he slowed to an off pace 6.25 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.80. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.23 and lasted until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.89/244.69 qualified #14 and in the first round, he had problems and shut off to a 14.60-56.13 that lost to Dale Pulde's 5.87/243. Jim was having a tough time getting past the first-round and it continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lost to Jody Smart in the first frame. On a good note, he was qualifying for all these shows, a hard thing to do. He almost didn't make the field at the NHRA Southern Nationals where his 6.02/248.89 qualified #15. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. He made up for those early losses at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge on May 26. There he qualified #13 with a 5.98/246.44. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, and in round two, Prudhomme broke on his burnout, advancing Jim into the semifinals. In his semifinal race, a 5.93/245 beat Ron Correnti, putting him in the final against Bernstein. Head would have rather raced for the win than take a solo trip, but Bernstein broke on the line and Jim soloed with a 5.93/248.48 for the victory. Things reverted back to "normal" at the next few races. His next event was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot of the sixteen-car show with a 5.98, but he lost to Pulde in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.95/234.13, but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The pattern continued at the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.83/251.53 and lost early. Jim went on to win NHRA Brainerd. His best NHRA times were 5.718/254.66 at the Keystone Nationals. Did Jim run 261 on the IHRA tour this year or was that from another year?

Notes: After not getting out of the six-second zone in '85, Scott did much better in '86. Scott qualified on the "bump spot" at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.03/235.10. In the first round, both he and opponent Johnny West smoked the tires, with Kalitta's 6.22/186.25 getting the win over West's 6.35/250. In round two, Scott advanced with a 7.35/202.06 when John Martin lost a supercharger, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the semifinals. A best of 7.01/136.76 failed to qualify at the NHRA Southern Nationals. Shortly after that, he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.90/248.61 qualified #7. He had help from Larry Frazier at this race. In the first round, Kalitta had some trouble controlling his newly found horsepower, and the car ended up crossing the centerline in his race with Tom McEwen. He then went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he managed to qualify in the top half of the field with a 5.838/250.20 (#6). In the first round, he beat a tire-smoking McCulloch with a 5.804/252.10, but a 6.87/145.63 lost in round two against West. On June 15, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.888/246.64. He lost to low qualifier Mark Oswald in the first round. His next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Kalitta qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.00/240.00. A first-round 5.90/243.24 beat Della Woods' 6.24/217, but a semifinal 6.05/240.64 lost to West's 5.90/249. Near the end of June, he was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #8 with a 5.903/243.50. Scott's first-round 5.924/251.81 lost to Kenny Bernstein's Low ET of the meet blast of 5.66 at 258. The following week (July 6), Scott was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There, he qualified #5 in the eight-car field, but he got out of shape and shut off in the first round, losing to Tim Grose. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, Scott’s 5.799/251.25 qualified #10. He lost to eventual winner Bernstein in round one. The best NHRA speed was 254.45 at NHRA Maple Grove. Did Scott run 258.52 somewhere this year? Was this a new body or car? (He ran off the end of the track at an IHRA race with the white body, tore up the front end. Probably a new body.) Notes: Jerry failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. During the week before the NHRA Gatornationals, Caminito was T-boned by Jerry Jefferson at a match race. He arrived at Gainesville with the damaged car, and chassis builder Murf McKinney came to the race to ensure the chassis had no damage. They redid the fiberglass on the right side of the car. They finished it Wednesday at 11:00 pm. Caminito then ran 5.840/250.55 to qualify #14. After all that work, he fouled away a 5.878/191.40 in the first round, against John Force. His next stop was at Englishtown's Spring Funny Car Bonanza race in April. Jerry didn't reach the final, but he set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.88/241.93. At Maple Grove for its Spring Funny Car Nationals, Caminito failed to make the finals in the 12 car show that was run "Chicago Style." He did run 5.88/234.37 on one pass, but he blew the clutch on his other pass. rnAt the NHRA Grandnatinals, Jerry qualified #13 at 10.85 in a short field. In round one, he lost to Jim Head, 5.90/241 to 6.089/236.40. Jerry was the sixth alternate at NHRA Englishtown at 6.052/239.10. He qualified #15 at Indy at 5.786/246.17 and lost to Johnny West in round one, 5.75/257 to 5.879/249.44. He was the third alternate at the Keystone Nationals at 6.114/233.10 but qualified at Ennis at 5.551/254.38. In round one, he lost to Raymond Beadle, 5.72/255 to 9.86/83. That was Jerry's last NHRA national event of the year. Photo from Indy 1987.

Notes: Bazemore & Evans got Funny Car in place of back pay. Photo from 1989 Norwalk. We need to confirm when the team took over full control from Ted Combis. The Combis name was on the car through Gainesville. The only qualified 1989 times after that, were from the Cajun Nats. Was the car owned by B&E or Ted Combis at that point? | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Bazemore qualified #6 in the 8 car funny car field with a 5.647/254.24 & Drew #3 qualifier Art Hendey in round 1. Bazemore would win with a 5.756/252.81 to Hendey's losing 5.845/247.93. That would pit Bazemore against #2 Qualifier RC Sherman in the semis where Bazemore had problems & The Eventual winner Sherman took the W.

Notes: Second quickest at Indy only to Prudhomme's unreal 5.63. Second fastest that year only to Billy Meyer's 254.95 (if you discount a questionable 255 from Prudhomme at an AHRA race). The Indy 254.23 on September. 4, 1982, was the third entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car. | Ken made his debut in fuel Funny Car at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals. He knew his stuff as he qualified #11 with a 6.05. Unfortunately, he slowed to a 6.36 in the first round, that lost to Tom Anderson's 6.34. In August, he was at US 131 Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He lasted until the semifinals when his quicker 6.03 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.07 in the "Blue Max."

Notes: Gary started the '83 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where traction was poor. A 7.21 qualified #4, and he beat John Force in the first round with an 11.61. In the semifinal, he ran a 7.90 to beat Brian Raines "Impulse." In the final, an 11.13 was good for runner-up honors as Don Prudhomme beat him with a 7.00. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He led qualifying on Thursday with a 6.09/238.72. On Friday, he came back out and ran 6.022/243.24, qualifying #3. Gary picked up his pace to a 5.94/240.64 that stopped Billy Meyer in the first round. A second-round 6.20/237.46 got around Kenny Bernstein. He met with Tom Anderson in the semifinal, who used a 5.97/236 to stop Burgin's 6.18/234.98. He ran really well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where a 5.87/240.64 qualified second behind Mark Oswald's similar 5.87/254. In the first round, he set Low ET at 5.78 at 238.72 while beating Bernstein's 5.94/245. In the second round, he shut off and lost against Anderson. Gary then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified second. He lasted until the semifinal before smoking the tires and losing to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." OCIR held its 64 Funny Car show in April. All cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Gary's 6.35/230.76 lost to Prudhomme's 6.13/222 in his first race, and in the second, his 6.18/231.95 beat Gary Densham. Unfortunately, neither of his ETs was good enough to advance into the final. He then went to Green Valley Raceway on April 10 for the NHRA Division Four race. Normally, by '83, Fuel FCs were not part of the program. But the track wanted a full show of TF and FCs. It was an eight-car show, and Gary ran 6.29/225.56 in the opening round to beat Johnny West, and a 6.22/233.76 in the semifinal beat Tom Hoover's better 6.17/224. In the final, both he and Frank Hawley, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," slipped and slid down the track, with Burgin getting the victory with a 6.92/221.13. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17, where he had lots of problems and could run no better than 13.54/46.02. The following week (April 24), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. A 6.09 qualified #5, but he lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. Englishtown held its Springnationals race sponsored by K-Mart, and eight cars were competing. He won his first-round race with a 6.27/221.13 when R.C. Sherman's Arrow broke. In the semifinal, he ran 6.11/240.00 over Tim Grose's 6.39/222. In the semifinal, he faced the "Custom Body" car driven by Rick Johnson. In this race, Burgin was the underdog as Rick had run his first "5" in the other semifinal race. The two had a good race, but Burgin's 6.30/234.37 finished runner-up to Rick's 6.25/240. He then went to Maple Grove for its Coca-Cola Spring Championships. His seven-cylinder 6.33 qualified #1 for the eight-car field, and with rain looming, the two Low ET qualifiers met in the final. Burgin lost a blower belt, but his 6.53/220.04 still got the win over Scott Weney's 6.57/222. He did not go to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.13/236.84 qualified #15. In the opening round, his 6.27/235.60 advanced over Meyer's troubled 9.12/83. A second-round 6.26/233.16 dropped Anderson's 6.29/243. He faced Beadle in the semifinal, and Gary's 6.42/171.75 lost to Beadle's 6.10/228. Shortly after that, he won the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race at Englishtown. He had run as well as 6.19/231.95 before he defeated Al Segrini in the final. Both had traction issues, and Burgin won with an 8.42/94.74. He made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car show with a 6.30 best. Later in the month (July), he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but his 6.23 best failed to qualify there as well. He skipped going to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. In mid-August, Burgin was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #13 with a 6.43/214.79. He improved to 6.27/229.00 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough to beat Pulde's 6.06/230. Brainerd was the next stop on the NHRA schedule, and Gary ran 6.04/241.28 to qualify #11. He lost to Anderson's 5.88 in the opening round. This was not one of Burgin's better years, and it showed at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, where he failed to qualify. Photo from 1982 GVRC match race. Assuming this was the Mustang, rebodied. We need to validate. We need to enter other NHRA national event times, but it looks like a best speed of 243.24 on the national event circuit. Where did the 254.23 occur? Iversen "shoehorn" body.

Notes: The "Goose" had one of his best seasons in '84. It didn't start so well at the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #8 in an eight-car show with a 6.52 and lost to Mike Dunn's 6.28/230 in the first round, with another 6.52/214. But at the next event, the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway, he finished runner up to Kenny Bernstein's 5.98/248 with a 6.07/236.84. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he lost to John Lombardo in the first round. He then ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.83 at 247.25 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals. Another 5.83/253.52 in the first round, beat Bob Gottschalk, but in the second round, the Corvette broke, advancing Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." He clicked at the next race, the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington, although he only ran a 5.98 to qualify #6. He eased past the first-round but then picked up the pace with a 5.87/245 in the second round that beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.04/245. In the semifinals, a 5.89 beat Billy Meyer's 5.88. In the final, he ran his old teammate, Don Prudhomme, and the "Snake" had problems while Tom motored to a 5.91/248.61 victory. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, Tom qualified #5 with a 5.86/252.10. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but broke on the line in the second round, advancing Bernstein. He ran well at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but failed to reach the finals. Tom ran several 5.80s at 250 plus this year, but his best times came in qualifying at Indy with a 5.804/254.23. Notes: John qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but in the first round, his blower exploded while running eventual winner Al Segrini. Things went much better at Gainesville, where he qualified #5 for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.849/249.30. He ran an easy 6.05/231.36 to advance in round one, when Don Prudhomme shut off with problems, and in round two, another "easy" 6.09/231.36 got around John Force in round two. Both he and his opponent, Billy Meyer, smoked the tires in the semifinals, but Collins' 6.45/216 tripped the win light over Meyer's 6.44/239. This put him into the final against Kenny Bernstein, and John had a ringside seat as he watched Kenny run the sport's first 260 (5.80/260.11) while his 5.92/245.90 got him the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, John's 5.93/247.93 qualified #12. Unfortunately, in the first round, an off-pace 6.19/243.24 lost to Tim Grose's 5.94/241. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge after crashing with Ed McCulloch during qualifying. Both cars were destroyed, but the drivers were alright. John rebuilt the Camaro after the Baton Rouge crash. Photo from US Nationals.

Notes: In January, Gary debuted his new Mustang at OCIR for the Grand Premiere event. Unfortunately, in the car's first run in the competition, it smoked the tires to 7.94 in a first-round loss to eventual winner Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He was in Tucson later in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme, but in the first round, he was upset by eventual winner Ed Moore with his 6.53/223.32 losing to Ed's 6.37/225. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 6.10/237.46 to qualify #12. A 6.11/243.24 beat Prudhomme's 6.31/185 in the first round, but in round two, Segrini left first and hung on to record a 6.30/233 victory over Gary's 6.29/227.27. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.08/238.72. In the first round, he had problems and slowed to a 6.77/194.38 that lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.32/229. After that, Burgin stopped at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but he lost to John Pott in the first round. Atlanta held an eight-car show early in April. Gary was there, but he took a little nap in the first round, and his 6.04 lost to Frank Hawley's 6.10 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He was back in Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show; he ran 6.09/240.00 to qualify #7. In the first round, he smoked the tires against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" and shut off to a 10.56 while Beadle advanced with a 5.88. He was at Rockingham on May 2 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Once again, he lost in the first round. This time, Segrini took him out. Gary made it past the first round at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified last in the eight-car show with a 6.24/237.46. In the first round, he advanced with a 6.19/243 when Dale Pulde had problems on the line and shut off. He faced Beadle in the semifinals and fouled against him. The following week (June 6), St. Louis hosted the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Burgin went all the way, winning this one. He qualified #3 with a 6.17 and a 6.24/237.47 beat Ron Correnti in round one. In the semifinals, his 6.29/231.96 beat Tom Hovland, and in the final, a 6.34/230.77 beat Tom Hoover's 6.49/215. After his first big win of the year, it was strange to see his name among the non-qualifiers at the NHRA Springnationals. His best of 6.30/236.22 was good for the third alternate. He did make the field at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals on June 20. His 6.06 qualified on the "bump" spot of the eight-car show. Burgin lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to Tom Anderson. He was runner-up to Beadle on June 27 for Brainerd's US Funny Car Championships. Another win came at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.02/239.36 behind Prudhomme's track record 5.97. He beat John Force in round one with a 6.19/229.00. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 6.14/233.16 when Hovland broke. In the final, he faced Prudhomme and the "Snake" shut off with problems while Burgin won with a 5.99/234.98. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.00/244.56 qualified #7, and he ran well, lasting until the semifinals. Burgin won the US Funny Car Nationals at Maple Grove. He reset the track record to 5.93 and had Top Speed of the meet at 235.60. A final round 6.004/227.27 narrowly beat Segrini's 6.010/232.55. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Gary ran 5.91/244.56 to qualify #3. He beat Beadle in the first round with a 5.97/246.57, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Segrini. He then made the trip to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Gary's 5.88/248.61 qualified #6. He beat Mike Dunn driving the "Hawaiian" and Anderson in the first two rounds, and a semifinal 5.93/243 beat a tire-smoking Ken Veney in the semifinals. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and Meyer's semifinal win came with a 5.94, so it was expected to be close. Unfortunately, Burgin overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Billy ran 5.91 for the victory. After a great runner-up finish at Indy, it was surprising to see his name among the non-qualifiers at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. It was an eight-car field, but Gary was definitely having problems as the best he could run in qualifying was 6.12/234. It took a 6.04 to make the show. Things went better at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals, but not by much. He qualified #15 with a 6.10/235.60 and an opening-round 6.11/237.46, lost to Beadle's 6.05/238. He was back at OCIR for its Manufacturer's Meet in November. Burgin made a warm-up pass and ran 5.99 but lost to Dunn and Billy Meyer in his first two races. Photo from 1982 GVRC match race. | Burgin usually ran Jaime Sartes', later built his own cars in '80-'82. - Joe Moore | 6.005 253.15 in the first round, beat Mike Dunn in the semis and ran 6.061 falling to Don Prudhomme at AHRA US 30 1982 (Runner Up) (Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds)

Notes: Lombardo took out top end blocks on Thursday, damaged left side of body, repaired and white primered. Car went back to all blue, unsponsored in '86. | John qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.09/234.98. A much improved 5.82/243.90 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Tim Grose's 5.73/247. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.89/240.51 qualified #10. Unfortunately, in the first round, Lombardo smoked the tires and shut off against Mark Oswald. John made it past the first-round at the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.88/244.16 meaning that he would face low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in round one. He got around Bernstein and also beat recent Winternationals winner Grose with a 5.93/244.16. In the semifinals, he broke a transmission and advanced Ed McCulloch into the finals. He qualified #9 again at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Raceway, Baton Rouge. A 5.95/222.49 got the spot. This time both he and John Force smoked the tires in their first-round race and Force's 6.07/237 came out on top over the "Blue Max's" 6.32/244.56. | At the NHRA US Nationals John qualified #5 with a 5.741/254.16. He would face #13 Qualifier Jim White in round 1 where Lombardo smoked the tires & watched White take the win.

Notes: 1984 was not Tom's most successful year. He qualified #3 for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.25 but fouled against Bryan Raines in the first round. He failed to qualify at Pomona (#4 alternate at 6.15/236.84), and things didn't go much better at Gainesville, where he was the sixth alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 6.362/233.16. He also missed the field in Atlanta, finishing as the #2 alternate at 6.217/238.09. Early in May, Tom was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.53/168 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he lost in the opening round of eliminations. He also lost in the first round, at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships after qualifying #9. Hoover qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a booming 6.057/250.00, but that resulted in a first-round loss to Jim Head, 5.84/254 to 6.98/138. Indy also was disappointing as he failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals with a #5 alternate 6.070/239.36 effort. That was Tom's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Pulde started the '85 season with the Firebird. At Pomona for the Winternationals, Dale qualified #7 with a 5.83/251.67. A first-round 5.84 beat Billy Meyer and a second round 5.74/252 beat John Force's 5.76/258. He had a little luck in the semifinals when he broke, but his opponent Ed McCulloch fouled and Pulde found himself in the final. He ran Al Segrini for the title, but his 6.02/233.52 finished runner-up to Al's 5.78/227. | At Baylands 2/85 4 Car Funny Car Show, Pulde ran 6.23/211 against Sherm Gunn in Round 1, 5.77/245 against Mike Dunn in Round 2 & ran low ET & Top Speed 5.714/250 to win the event over Don Prudhomme. | At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Dale lasted until the semifinals where he lost to McCulloch due to crossing the centerline. Crewchief Mike Hamby argued hard with IHRA officials saying that the car didn't cross the centerline, but the decision held. At the Gatornationals, a 5.72/244.69 qualified #6. Pulde beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.87/243.63. In round two, a 5.91/252 advanced when McCulloch lost a blower. But in the semifinals, Dale lost to John Lombardo's 5.76/255 in the "Blue Max." At the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, a 5.93/246.71 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in which Pulde smoked the tires and lost. The "old" Firebird proved it could still win by winning the IHRA Pro Am Championships at Rockingham in May. Dale beat Billy Meyer in the final even though they both ran 5.80's. Pulde's was at 254. The last race the Firebird was used at was the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Once again the old car proved itself by qualifying #1 with a 5.74 (Low ET) at 251.81.
