Notes: Long Nose 85/86. The first lock-up clutch at Indy resulted in best-ever times of 5.509 at 271.41, which were not backed up for records. Hit the first 5.40s with a 5.425 low qualifier at the Ennis Chiefs, which was not backed up as a record. However, a 5.543 at Ennis was backed up as the new record. Ran 266.66 and 265.17 at 1986 Chiefs. | This was Kenny's last year with the Tempo body and probably one of, if not his best season. At Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing, Kenny ran a track record 5.66 at 254.95 to qualify first. He beat Ed McCulloch in round one, with a 5.73/244.56, but in the semifinals, his 5.78/217.91 lost to John Force's 5.85/250. The NHRA season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.60 (Low ET) at 250.00 and continued to run 5.60's in the first two rounds over Rick Johnson (5.60/246.57) and John Martin (5.60/252.80). But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Tim Grose who ran a 5.61 for the win. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #1 with a track record 5.59 at 261.17. In the first round, he beat Tom Hoover's 5.76/254 with a 5.64/255.24. In round two, a 5.66/256.99 beat Force's 5.91/212, but he lost to a holeshot by Tom McEwen in the semifinals, when Tom's 5.67/256 beat Kenny's 5.65/255.82. He was runner-up to Paul Smith at the IHRA Pro-Am at Rockingham, and once again, he walked off with Low ET honors with a 5.58. In April at the NHRA Southern Nationals, he qualified #1 with a 5.67/260.86 (Low ET and Top Speed) but then suffered a rare first-round loss. He got out qualified for the first time that year at the NHRA Cajun Nationals when Force ran 5.66 (Low ET) while Kenny had to settle for the second position with a 5.69/253.73. But for the second race in a row, he lost in the first round. This time his 5.88/237.52 lost to Johnny West's 5.83/252 in the "Hawaiian." At Bristol, he got another runner-up finish at the IHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET at 5.57, but he blew an engine letting Grose's 5.87/231 get the victory in the final. Another runner-up finish followed at the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.65/254.02 qualified #2 behind Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. And that's how they finished. The final saw Oswald's 5.76/255 take the win over the Tempo's 5.80/250.13. It was a strange situation. The "Budweiser King" was probably the most feared car to come up against in competition, yet here it was, the middle of June, and the team hadn't won yet. Well, that all changed with the running of the Super Stock Nationals. While it wasn't a major event, it was still a satisfying win. Kenny qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 5.62/257.14 (Low ET and Top Speed). He beat Bruce Larson and Dominic Santucci with times of 5.75/254.95 and 5.72/256.41 before singling for the win with a 5.76/251.39 when West's Daytona broke. Now that the seal was broken, the wins started coming. On June 29, he won the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.71/254.66 but went on to set Low ET at 5.66 and, in the final be beat Force with a 5.69/257.28. The following week (July 6), he won the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan. A 5.81/256.41 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1, and he beat Smith and Grose with times of 5.95/253.52 and 5.84/252 to meet Oswald in the final. A 5.87/253.52 wrapped up the win. He took his fourth meet in a row at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 behind Oswald with a 5.62/239.48. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round, and a 5.67/254 beat West in round two. Hoover smoked the tires against him in the semifinals, and his 5.66/257 got lane choice over Force in the final. Once again, Bernstein prevailed, running 5.65/259.39 for another win. He managed to get into the finals at the next NHRA race, the Mile High Nationals at Denver. Kenny qualified #1 with a 5.84/227.96 and made his way into the final to meet Oswald. It took a Low ET of the meet run by Oswald to keep Bernstein out of the winner's circle again. Mark's 5.81/252 nipped Kenny's close 5.82/247.52. He won the PHR Championships at US 131, Martin, Michigan. A 5.79/247.25 qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field. In the first two rounds, he ran 5.74 and 5.80 while beating Bob Gottschalk and Scott Kalitta. But in the semifinals, he set track records of 5.72/259.36 to beat Grose's 5.94. In the final, he ran Oswald again. But Kenny took the win easily with a 5.77/257.87 when Mark had problems and slowed to a 7.55/120. On August 17, Kenny set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a track record 5.67 at 251.39. Unfortunately, in the first round, he fouled away a 5.81 against Billy Meyer. The following week (August 24), he was back in the winner's circle at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #2 (behind Oswald) but improved to a meet's best of 5.57/260. In the final, he met and beat Oswald. |

Notes: Blown direct-drive 427 Ford on fuel. AKA Super Cyclone. Ran 'low nines.' (We need exact ET). Though generally run as an exhibition car, closest class would've been S/FX (Supercharged Factory experimental). Considered by most to be the first true fuel funny car, this car began with an FE wedge motor on nitro, and was created as the huge publicity roll-out on the gas-burning Dodge Chargers team started. Former dragster standout Jack Chrisman agreed to drive, with the car built by Mercury subcontractor Bill Stroppe. Once complete, Jack would show up unannounced at the DC's publicized race demo dates, reportedly bankrolled directly by Mercury through Helen Sachs dealership in Downey, Ca. (and, no, Dodge was not happy about these appearances). The direct drive meant it smoked the tires most of its run just like a fuel dragster of this era did. Chrisman ran the car for two seasons, converting to red paint with fresh 1965 body panels, and replacing the wedge with SOHC power on fuel soon after the 1965 Winternationals. The motor was also set back at this time. In this format, the car was in the first-ever NHRA side-by-side blown nitro 'doorslammer' race when Jack raced Don Gay for B/Fuel Dragster honors at the 1965 Nationals. Sold to Dee Keaton, Jack 'the Bear' would bring the car back out briefly after the August 1966 fire in his Logghe roadster at New York National Speedway. Former Ford racer and collector Jim Barillaro found the remains of this car in the early 1980s and restored it. Therefore this, the first fuel funny car, is also indirectly responsible for inaugurating the restored funny car era, which in turn has birthed the modern nostalgia Funny Car movement. And Jim Barillaro will still occasionally cackle this car on nitro. | Jack showed up at Fremont on July 12/1964, and made a series of exhibition passes. He ran times of 10.70/144.69, 10.63/145.16, 10.44/147.54, and a final 10.38/148.27 to steal the show. Fans were amazed at this full size car running these times and speeds. |

Notes: NHRA Sears/Craftsman, NHRA Topeka KS 94. Also ran 4.98 at Ennis (only Funny Car in the fours there). Force qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.33/283.52. He improved to 5.26/287.44 in the opening round, but he lost to Kenji Okazaki's 5.23/273. He won the next race, the NHRA Arizona Nationals. His 5.14/288.27 qualified #7, and in the opening round, his 5.24/282.57 advanced when Dean Skuza fouled. In round two, Del Worsham's 5.25/264 lost to John's 5.23/285.35. He then defeated Dale Pulde in the semifinal with a 5.37/289.48. His final-round opponent was Cruz Pedregon, who had not run any slower than 5.20 in eliminations. The two had a great race that had Force getting his 33rd NHRA career victory, with a 5.18/288.83 that just nipped Pedregon's 5.19/253. |

Notes: Baddest dog in the land. Ran quickest and fastest times in the class in Round 1 at Ontario 72 (6.294). Then ran 6.30/235.64 in Round 2 and 6.31 in Round 3. Lost in finals to Jim Dunn when Pat redlighted. Earlier in the year, Foster had a blower explosion at Lions in May, hit the guardrail and destroyed the body. They put a new body on it and repaired the chassis at Buttera's. | Ran 6.59 Low ET at OCIR Funny Car 500. Also ran 6.47 at OCIR 72. Featured prominently in the movie Funny Car Summer. Pat was the number one qualifier at 6.36 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2, but the chutes tangled, and he went into the sand trap, damaging the car beyond repair. Omer Carruthers took his place in the field. |

Notes: Sunday October 12/1975: The "Snake" makes history on a pit lane drag strip no less, at Ontario: 5.987 at 237.46 in the semis against Raymond Beadle at the Winston World Finals. Also went 241.53 for the sport's first 240 fuel FC. - Ricko. | Strange thing about the 241. It was not possible on the 3 decimal clocks of the day, which only displayed 241.28 and 241.93. It is likely that Prudhomme actually ran 241.93, but the clock was misread as 241.53. Inaugural member of the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. Won 6 of 8 NHRA National events in '75 - biggest loss was Indy to Beadle and the Blue Max. | Started the '75 season with the 'Cuda, but the Monza debuted at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Things didn't start so well for the Monza. First off, the tow rig broke down outside of Phoenix and had to be towed in. Then once it arrived, Don went to make the car's first pass ever and the rear end broke. After getting it fixed, he ran a 6.40 to qualify #3. He lasted until round two where the Monza got crossed up and lost to Billy Meyer driving Gene Snow's Vega. With the bad luck behind him, Don towed into Pomona for the Winternationals where he ran a 6.25/228.42 to qualify #2. In the first round, he beat Meyer's tire smoking 8.15 with a 6.39/189.87. In round two, a 6.37 beat Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's potent Mustang. In the semifinals, a 6.28/212.76 beat Charlie Therwhanger in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. He picked up his first win of the year with the Monza with a 6.24/226.70 in the final over Mike Miller who broke in Jim Green's "Green Elephant" Vega. On March 2, Prudhomme shocked everyone when he laid down a 6.08/235.60 to qualify first at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. The times were good for Low ET and Top Speed as well as new track records. But after qualifying, his times weren't so good. He singled in the first round, with an easy pass when Gary Burgin's Mustang II broke. In round two, a 6.51/212 beat Leroy Chadderton's quicker 6.48/222. A tire smoking 7.91 in the semifinals beat John Lombardo. And in the final, he ran a 7.17/141.28 to take the runner-up spot to Dale Pulde's 6.53/196 in the "Eastern Raider" Mustang II. At Gainesville for the Gatornationals, Don got the pole with a 6.39 (Low ET) at 205.47. Tommy Grove's Mustang lost to Prudhomme's 6.61 in the first round, and Tom Raley's Vega lost to the Monza's 6.53/198.23 in round two. A semifinal 6.87/167 advanced to the finals when Shirl Greer got out of shape. In the final, Don got his second NHRA national event win of the year with a 6.52/172.74 getting the win over Tom Prock whose "Custom Body" Dart broke a rear end. Portland held the Seattle Opener and Prudhomme made it into the final before losing to Ed McCulloch. At the NHRA Division 6 Opener on May 31 at Seattle, Don qualified #1, set Low ET, and won the race over McCulloch who broke in the final. Don went 3 for 3 at NHRA's third national event of the year, the Springnationals at National Trail. He ran Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 and then ran 6.31/200.44 over Jim Liberman's 6.59, a 6.40/219.51 over Jim Nicoll's 6.56, and a 6.84 over Greer in the semifinals when they both smoked the tires. In the final he ran Raymond Beadle behind the wheel of the "Blue Max." It was an interesting final when the "Max" had its Mustang II body come unhinged and blow off shortly after leaving the line. Don went on to score a 6.46 victory. Beadle got back at Prudhomme at the third Division 3 race at Cincinnati when he beat Don in the final with a 6.43/219 over the Monza's 7.19/147.29. He was runner-up at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 21 as well. He qualified #1 with a 6.53 and made his way into the final to run Harlan Thompson in the "Fireball Vega. Harlan ran a Low ET and Top Speed 6.36/222 to beat Prudhomme for the victory. He lost his first NHRA national event of the year at the Summernationals on July 13. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.22/205.01. But in the first round, he got crossed up and shut off to a 9.55/89.46 against Tom McEwen. Don wasn't down long as he picked up his fourth NHRA National event win of the season at the Grandnationals in Canada on August 16. Once again, he qualified #1 with a 6.46/207.37. He beat Burgin in the first round, with a 6.47/212.26 and in the semifinal, a 6.59/222.22 beat Bob Pickett. In the final he ran Prock again. Don set Low ET in the final with a 6.45/224.43 getting the win. He won the fourth Division 1 race at Maryland International, as a final round 6.79/225.00 (Top Speed) beat Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" Mustang II. Another win was added to his long list when he won the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Michigan. He qualified #1 with a 6.28/233.76 then ran 6.12/213.27 to beat Greer's Mustang II in the first round. A semifinal 6.28/220.04 beat Denny Savage in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the final he ran a 6.12/222.77 to beat Vic Cecelia's 6.35/225 in Charlie Proite's "Telstar." Prudhomme and Beadle staged their own little war at the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. They qualified #1 and second with Don's 6.17/232.55 (Top Speed) getting the #2 spot. In the first round, Don beat Ron O'Donnell in the "Damn Yankee" with a 6.16. In the second round, a 6.21 beat Pulde's 6.94 in the "Arizona Wildcat" and in the semifinals, a 6.45 beat Pickett's tire smoking 7.89 in Mickey Thompson's car. In the final, Prudhomme got beat. Raymond shot to a 6.16/226 for the win over the "Snake's" 6.26/224.44. After that, Don went to Portland International for the NHRA Division 6 final. He qualified #1 with a 6.44/196.50 and advanced past the first-round with a 6.69/175.78 when Miller broke in the "Green Elephant." A semifinal 6.20/193.96 beat Rich Rogers and in the final, he unleashed Low ET with a 6.12/211.76 getting the win over Gordie Bonin. |

Notes: The "Candies and Hughes" team would never have suspected their car to not qualify in its debut at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On every qualifying attempt, the car smoked the tires. Oswald's best was only 7.33/126.93 (seventh alternate). Early in March, the team went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. Mark's 6.00/250.69 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Al Segrini's 5.95/237. Oswald beat Johnny White in the first round with a 6.09/246.57. In the semifinal, his 6.03/250.00 beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" car. He faced Segrini in the final, and Oswald's car died on the line giving Al a solo pass for the win. Things really turned around at Gainesville, where Mark qualified #1 with a 5.87/254.23 (Top Speed and a new track record). Unfortunately, the car went up in smoke in the opening round, and he lost to Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Atlanta, Mark's 5.93/245.23 (Top Speed) qualified second to John Lombardo's similar 5.93/232. Oswald faced Hawley in the first round, and he fouled, giving the "Chi-Town" bunch an easy win. The team's first IHRA event of the season was the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. It was another eight-car field, and Mark's 6.02 qualified #3. He lasted until the semifinal. He then went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, where the team got its first win of the year by defeating Raymond Beadle, who was driving the "Blue Max" in the final. The following week (May 29), Mark took the pole at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.90 (Low ET) at 243.24. By now, the team was becoming the car to watch. Billy Meyer overpowered the track in the opening round and smoked the tires against him, and Mark's 6.21/229.59 advanced. Don Prudhomme did the same in the semifinal, and Mark ran 6.02/249.99 (Top Speed). He faced Segrini in the final, and both ran 6.17 (Oswald at 241.28), but Al crossed the stripe first for the win. Oswald wasn't down for long as he then went to Bristol on June 5 and won the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.92 and then beat a tire-smoking Tom McEwen in the first round with a 6.13/240.00. In the semifinal, he set Top Speed with a 6.52/248.61 that beat Beadle. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and Mark cut a great light while the "Snake" didn't. Oswald's 6.00/236 beat Don's better 5.86/245. The team "only" qualified #8 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.02/247.93 (Top Speed). But Mark had a bit of luck on his side. His 6.19/240.00 defeated a crossed-up Frank Mancuso in the first round. John Force smoked the tires hard in round two, and Oswald advanced with a 6.18/241.93. Johnson had his parachute deploy early in the semifinal, and Mark won with a 6.41/222.22. In the final, he faced Beadle, and Raymond's 6.05/238 got the victory over Mark's 6.27/235.60. Still, with the runner-up finish, Oswald now sat second in the NHRA FC points chase with his 2,980 running behind Hawley's 3,730. Early in July, the team made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Mark's 5.97/247.25 qualified second to Prudhomme at 5.91. Seeming bogus times were given in the first round to both Hawley and Oswald, but Mark's 5.62 at only 240.00 beat Force's 6.08/240. In the semifinal, he ran 6.07/243.90 to beat Ken Veney. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and another holeshot got the "Candies and Hughes" team the win. Mark's 6.34/245.245.23 beat the "Snake's" 6.31/241. The following week (July 10), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Mark qualified #4 but failed to reach the finals. Then came the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. In qualifying, Mark had made runs of 5.90/228.42, 5.99/235.36, and 5.93/251.39. His times set Low ET and Top Speed. His 5.88/248.61 in the first round beat Tom McEwen's 5.93/247. In round two, Segrini's 6.11/243 fell to Oswald's 5.92/249.30. Johnson's "Custom Body" car broke a rear end in the semifinal and a 5.95/243 advanced. In the final, he raced Force, and John's 6.00/245 finished second to Mark's 5.92/251.39. It was quite a performance, and it brought Oswald within 19 points of Hawley in the points chase. Hawley gained some points back at Denver. Oswald qualified #5 for the NHRA Mile High Nationals for the eight-car field with a 6.14/243.24, and Frank qualified #1. That set up a first-round meeting between the two that saw Hawley's 6.08/233 beat Mark's 6.18/242.58. Hawley went on to win. At Brainerd, he lost more points to Hawley. Mark qualified #4 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.89/250.69. He beat Ron Correnti in round one, and in round two, his 5.95/248 took out Segrini. In the semifinal, the car broke against Bernstein. Hawley made the final and finished runner-up. The point spread was now at 8,097 for Frank to Mark's 6,600. Mark had earned enough points (1265) to qualify first for the Big Bud Shootout at Indy. In the first round of the specialty race, he ran 5.86/250.00 to beat Tom Anderson. Another 5.86 at 251.39 in the semifinal was not enough to beat Bernstein's 5.81/256. The actual race at the NHRA U.S. Nationals saw Oswald's 5.86/253.52 qualify #5. In the first round, his 6.15/236.22 defeated Dale Pulde's 6.27/234. In round two, Bernstein got him again. Mark's late 5.88/257.87 (Top Speed and a new track record) lost to Kenny's 5.93/250. The points now stood at 8,917 for Hawley to Oswald's 7,484. The next week (September 11), he picked up the win at the IHRA U.S. Open Championships at Rockingham. He qualified #3, and he set a 254.23 track speed record. He also set Low ET in the semifinal with his 5.83/253 beating Beadle. In the final, Pulde's 5.96 lost to Mark's 5.84. Going into the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, Oswald was also second in the IHRA's FC points chase. He was just 54 markers behind Beadle. The two qualified one-two, with Mark's 5.74/253.52 (Top Speed and Low ET) getting the pole. He soloed in the first round when Bernstein broke, and a 5.89 beat Correnti in the semifinal. In the other semifinal race, Beadle smoked the tires and lost to Pulde. Oswald was the IHRA FC Champion for '83, and in the final, he also won the race with his 5.79/252.80 topping Pulde's 5.85/245. In his funny car debut at Pomona, Oswald ran a 7.335/126.93 to DNQ. He ran 254.23 on March 11, 1983, at the 1983 Gators to become the fifth entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car. Photo from '83 Cajun Nationals. NHRA time sheets credit him with a 5.621 Low ET in eliminations at Sanair. Frank Hawley was credited with a 5.716 in that round. It seems fishy, but it's on the sheets. Low ET for Top Fuel cars there was Richard Tharp's 5.662! Mark's booming 257.87 was actually a massive holeshot loss in round two at Indy; Kenny Bernstein treed him, .472 to .546, and then held on to take a 5.930/250 to 5.888/257.87 win (.032 second margin of victory - about 12 feet). Mark ran a 5.825 at NHRA Fremont for his second-best ET of the year. |

Notes: Crowerglide Direct Drive. Snow's 7.23/208.71 mph run at the Dallas Int'l Motor Speedway-based Springnationals on May 3 was the first 200-mph run in NHRA Funny Car competition. He also went 211.26 at that event, but did not back it up. Set Low ET and Top Speed at York at 7.23/214.24. Snow also won three AHRA Grand American Series events, the AHRA Points Championship, and the AHRA Driver of the Year award. He concluded the year with a best run of 6.76/218.44 at Lions Drag Strip. "We carried a spare motor the whole year and never had to use it," said Snow. "It was an extraordinary deal." - NHRA | Qualified fourth at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 at 7.086/203.61. Ran 6.83 at Suffolk. | Gene Snow hit some shocking speeds with his Charger in '69, like 214 mph, so why on earth would you change cars for '70. It was easy as in those years the cars were advancing so fast that last year's winner was this year's non-qualifier. Also Dodge had brought out the new Challenger and it had a smaller front end than the big boxy Charger did. The Challenger featured a 2" chopped top and the body came from Fiberglass Ltd. Al Bergler did all the interior tin. Keith Black built the 426 Hemi that used M/T rods and Forgedtrue pistons. A Crower roller cam was used. Black also used his magic on the heads. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold and Don Hampton modified the 6/71 GMC blower. Up top sat an Enderle injector. The power was transmitted through a Crowerglide clutch and flywheel setup with four discs to a Detroit Locker rear with 4.30 gears. This became the car to beat in '70. | Gene started the season at the AHRA Winternationals in Jan where he didn't do too well. He advanced past round one with a 7.76 when Roy Gay's GTO broke, but in round two, he slept on the line and his 7.66 lost to last year's big winner Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. Fortunately, Ongais broke and was unable to run in the semifinals so Gene was reinstated. He was unable to capitalize on it, when he was started leaking oil and was shut off on the line, giving Jake Johnston in the "Blue Max" a single into the final. A week later, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The track wasn't great for the high horsepower cars and Snow qualified #5 with a 7.61. A 7.68/202 in the first round, beat Lew Arrington's quicker 7.61. In the second round, a 7.40 beat a tire smoking Ongais, and in the semifinals, a 7.30/200 beat Ken Safford's 7.47 in the Mr. Norm car. In the final, he ran the car that flew here the year before, the "Hawaiian" with Larry Reyes behind the wheel. Gene lost this one, with his 7.83/184.42 finishing runner-up to Reyes' 7.55/196. He ran at Lions on March 8 for the AHRA Grand American where he won his first two rounds with runs of 7.32 and 7.26, but in the semifinals his reverser failed after his burnout and he had to shut off in his race against Don Prudhomme. At the Dallas season opener on March 15, he beat Bobby Steakley with a 7.44/197.36, but then lost in his next race. Then Gene began he hit his stride. He won a best of three match race at Amarillo against Reyes. Times were not the greatest, but he won all three races with 7.84, 7.89, and 7.92 ETs. He then went to Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he won with a final round 7.14 (Low ET) at only 168.53 over Jay Howell. He ran a strong 7.16/186.72 while beating Prudhomme in the semifinal. At the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Dallas, Gene didn't win as he had mechanical issues, but he did set both ends of the NHRA record to 7.23/208.81. Snow ran faster, setting Top Speed of the meet with a 212.76, but he didn't run fast enough to back it up for the record. He also made the final at the next AHRA Grand American race at Frontier International. Snow actually lost to Leroy Goldstein in the "Ramchargers" car in the semifinals when Leroy's 7.42/197 beat his 7.77/173, but Goldstein lost a motor on the run and once again Gene was reinstated. In the final, he fouled against Prudhomme. Another runner-up finish came at Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals where his final round 7.56/179.80 lost to Jay Howell's 7.37/180. Early in June, he was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. He dominated the Funny Car program running a 7.61/192.16 in the first round, over Jerry Jokerst. A second round 7.39/203.61 beat Goldstein's 7.63/175, while in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 7.34/196.92 to beat Clyde Morgan's 7.52 in Dick Harrell's second Camaro. In the final, his 7.35/205.00 (Top Speed) took the victory over Fritz Callier's 7.77/187. He almost doubled up the following week at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. Snow qualified #3 with a 7.22/209.79. He worked his way into the final by running a 7.19 in round one, a 7.20/207.37 in round two over Mike Snively's 7.38/199 in Jim Annin's Challenger, and a 7.09/211.76 in the semifinal while stopping Prudhomme's 7.64/166. He met up with Goldstein in the final, and the "Ramchargers" driver laid down a 7.03 (Low ET) at 208 to take the victory against Gene's 7.56/148.51. He wasn't down for long as two days later, he scored a victory over an eight-car field at Kansas International. There he beat Bobby Wood in the first round, with a 7.40/189.86 while another 7.40 at 197.36 beat Dale Pulde's 7.54/183 in the semifinals. He reset the track speed mark in the final with a 7.21/200.88 that won the race over Larry Arnold's 7.53/177. On June 24, he won the NHRA Division 4 race at Oklahoma City. Snow qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 7.81 and in the final ran Low ET and Top Speed at 7.35/207.36 on a single since Mart Higginbotham lost fire on the line. He faced off against Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" on June 28 at Southland Dragway. Gene won the first race while setting a track ET record of 7.29 at 204.54 over Rowe's 7.83/170. Bobby came back to win the second race with his 7.49/196 beating the "Snowman's" 7.56/200. Gene won the match when he won the third race with a 7.34/201 over Bobby, who fouled with a 7.73/170. It was Gene who fouled in the first round, at Capitol's King of Kings Funny Car race on July 11. He was running Prudhomme and he fouled away a 7.15/187.50 while the "Snake" got the win with a 7.45/185. Another win came at the first running of the NHRA Summernationals. Only nine cars showed and Snow ran 7.23/211.26 to qualify first. He got the "bye run" in the first round, and ran 7.34. In round his 7.32/207 beat Bruce Larson while in the semifinals, he got serious and set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.20/214.24 to take out Phil Castronovo. In the final, he ran Vic Brown driving Gary Richards' "Black Shadow" Mustang. A final 7.27/210.77 wrapped up the win over Vic's 7.47/191. Another win on the AHRA Grand American series came at New England Dragway on August 2. He beat Don Schumacher in the first round, with a 7.09/189.98. He got around Morgan in round two with a fairly easy run, but in the semifinals, he set a bit of history when his 6.95/212.76 was the first six second run by a Funny Car in AHRA competition. On that pass, he beat Howell's 7.20/192. In the final, a Low ET and Top Speed effort of 6.93/213.77 took home the "bucks" over Goldstein. A week later (August 9), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified for the show with a 7.37/191.48. A 7.12/204.54 beat an impressive 7.23/200 from Randy Walls' Chevy-powered car. Unfortunately, while racing eventual winner Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town-Hustler" in the semifinals, he fouled away the Low ET and Top Speed of the meet, a 7.06/210.77. He ended August by winning the AHRA Grand American race at Bristol. Gene qualified #1est with a 7.22/199.54 and waltzed through the field. The field was short and since Snow was the low qualifier, he got the "odd lot" solo in the first round, and ran 7.55. In the second round, a 7.36/203.61 beat Charlie Wilson, and in the semis, his 7.21/202.24 dropped Al Vanderwoude. A track record ET of 7.04 at 205.46 (Top Speed) beat Prudhomme's 7.43/185 in the final. | Best NHRA National Event time for Gene in 1970 was 6.955/213.27. |

Notes: The first 290 mph Funny Car in the sport at Ennis 1991 with a 290.13 blast. Wes Cerny's 290 mph tuning skills on this car caught the attention of Kenny Bernstein, who hired him for the 1992 season, resulting in the sport's first 300 mph run. Photo from Indy 1991. | Jim qualified #1 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with track records of 5.25/278.63. The team was running a new engine set-up that used Leonard Hughes cylinder heads with Wes Cerny's tune up. They actually qualified with their "old" engine and switched to the "new" combination for eliminations. A first-round 5.39/277.26 stopped Gary Litton's 5.58/259. In round two, Dominic Santucci lost to White's 5.36/273.63 and a semifinal 5.33/272.89 beat Mark Oswald, who smoked the tires and shut off. He faced Mike Dunn in the final. Their times in eliminations had been close, but White's 5.39/263.77 finished second best to Dunn's 5.34/275. The "Hawaiian" team followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where, once again, Jim qualified #1 with track records of 5.34/274.72. The field was short, so White got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 5.35/274.72 (again!) He was flexing the car's power as that was easily Low ET of the opening round. In round two, he downed Ed McCulloch with a 5.41/255.39 and a semifinal 5.44/270.83 beat Al Hofmann, whose car broke an A-arm on the run. He came up against John Force in the final. White had been running a tenth faster than Force. Jim got the victory with a 5.54/271.90 when Force tried to match the "Hawaiian's" times and put too much power into it and smoked the tires. Jim continued to set track records at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.18 track record at 280.19 (Top Speed) qualified #1 for the third straight NHRA event. An opening round 5.39/273.47 beat Gary Bolger's 5.53/261 and a 5.38/276.66 beat Santucci's close 5.38/272 in round two. But in the semifinals, White blew an engine and slowed to a 5.70/193.88, losing to eventual winner Del Worsham's 5.37/272. The team's combination didn't work quite as well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Jim’s 5.50/263.00 qualified #4 and he was upset in the first round, when Richard Hartman's 5.71/255 got the better of his 5.74/249.30. Jim's 291.82 at the World Finals was the Top Speed of the entire meet, including the Top Fuelers. |

Notes: Pat Foster is a famous chassis builder of many funny cars from the 1960s into the 1980s. Foster also drove many funny cars, including the Mickey Thompson Mach I in 1969. The car was the sister car to the one Danny Ongais drove. Foster built both cars, revolutionizing funny car racing in 1969 with his chassis design. The cars were lighter than their competition, which gave them a distinct advantage over the other funny cars during the first half of the season. The competition started to transition to pure funny car chassis to keep up with Foster's machines. While Ongais went on a winning spree, Foster had a series of gremlins that kept him from winning. The car showed potential with a 6.99 clocking along with a reported 215.31 mph blast at Kansas City. But fate stepped in when Pat Foster was involved in a two-car accident with Gerry Schwartz at Dallas International during the NHRA Springnationals. Schwartz did not survive the crash. Foster continued to build funny cars and became a national-event-winning driver. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info provided by James Ibusuki). | Foster built the two Mustangs identical except that the red car had a longer wheelbase. Steve Montrelli remembers that the teams went through 55 Cammer motors that season. Pat started the season by qualifying #7 at the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.24/181.45. He lost to Ron Leslie in the first round. At OCIR's second All-Pro race on February 9, a 7.88 was good for first alternate. Funny, Ongais failed to qualify at Pomona and Ongais qualified at OCIR. By February 16, both were in the field at the third annual Stardust Open at Las Vegas. Pat ran a first-round 7.90/192.30 over Randy Walls and Charlie Allen broke against him in the semifinal so it became an all Mickey Thompson Mustang final when he faced Ongais in the final. Pat got crossed up and slowed to a 9.85/161.57 for the runner-up spot. He had some gremlins at Lions on February 22 for an eight-car show when he lost fire against Ray Alley in the first round. On March 2 at the Bakersfield March Meet, he failed to qualify. A 7.64 qualified second to his teammate at the HRM Championships on March 16. Pat ran a 7.57/192.30 in the first round, over Johnny Wright, and a second round 7.66/191.48 beat Dave Beebe's 7.78/196 in the Super Chief. In the semifinal a 7.64/191.89 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.96/187 in the Invader. But unfortunately, a broken drive shaft stopped him in the finals, giving Charlie Allen (7.59/194) the win. On May 3, he faced Jim Liberman in a best of three match race at York's US 30. Foster beat Liberman three straight. An 8.11/175.78 won the first race over Jim's out of shape pass, while a 7.82/189.86 won the second race when Liberman fouled away a track record 7.66/191. Pat won the third race by resetting Jim's record with a 7.63 at 188.28. Early in May, Foster faced Bobby Wood in a best of three match race at Thompson. Pat won the first race with a 7.99/189.64 to beat Wood, who burned a piston. Bobby was unable to repair so Foster ran a single to win the match. It was a good run as the track record 7.85 held by Don Nicholson since '67 was put to rest with a 7.60 at 193.54 for the match race victory. Foster had some problems at Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals. On Saturday, May 24, he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Ron O'Donnell. He got back in on the "break rule", but things went worse in the semifinals when after launching, the Mustang went into a wheelstand. Pat landed it and got it straightened out and stomped on it again. This time the car veered to the right and crashed into the guardrail. The body of the Mustang was heavily damaged, but Foster was OK. Foster qualified number one at Bristol with a great 7.352/199.55, but his tragic first-round crash with Schwartz overshadowed that effort. |

Notes: The '81 season had an interesting start for the "Blue Max" team. They showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Beadle ran a track record 5.97 at 245.90 (Top Speed) to qualify first. He beat Dennis Geisler with a 6.01/238, and in round two, Mike Dunn with another new track record 5.93 at 245.90. In the semifinals, he again went 5.93 at 245.23 to beat Don Prudhomme. But the win came at a price as the engine blew and tore the roof of the Horizon body. The team didn't have a spare body, so Kenny Bernstein offered his spare. The roof of Bernstein's car was grafted onto the "Max's" topless body for the final. After all that work, he came up to the line in the final to face Billy Meyer, who had been having his own troubles (used up four engines), but the two both had problems, and Meyer's 6.52/205 got the victory over Beadle's 6.66/236.22. The next stop was at Fremont for the East/West meet, and while Beadle didn't win, he did set Low ET at 6.04. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, the team qualified unusually further back in the field with a 6.05/230.76 that was good for the #10 spot in the show. He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 6.20/234.37, but an off-pace 6.31/230.76 in round two lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.27/237. The next event they attended was the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. Raymond made it to the final before losing to Bernstein. Green Valley Raceway was their next stop for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. A 6.45/227.84 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, and he picked up to 6.32/233.76 in the first round to beat Chris Berg. A 6.25/228.42 beat Bernstein in the semifinals, and he went into the finals to meet with Hoover. Beadle got another runner-up finish as his 6.45/231.36 lost to Hoover's 6.32/231. Atlanta hosted the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 26, featuring eight-car fields in the nitro classes. Raymond qualified #1 with a track record 5.96 at 230.17. Unfortunately, a blown motor slowed him to a 6.23 in the first round, which lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.11. Things went much more their way at Rockingham; the "Max" ran a track record 5.99 at 231.95 in qualifying #1. This was IHRA's first five-second time in the Funny Car division. A 6.00/233.70 beat Shirl Greer in the first round and backed up the 5.99 as a new IHRA record. In round two, Raymond's 6.22 beat Al Segrini, setting up a Meyer vs. Beadle final. The "Max" got the win, running 6.23/229.59 over Billy's troubled 7.46. These two would meet again in the final at the next IHRA race, the Springnationals at Bristol. There Beadle qualified #1 with a track record 5.98 at 240.64. He beat a tire-smoking Bernstein in the first round with a 6.22, while a solo run of 6.18 advanced him into the final when Segrini's car broke on the line. The two reversed their finishes of the last race, with Meyer winning with a 6.21/228 over Raymond's 6.26/236.84. The FCs boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals, holding out for more money. May ended with the team running at the IHRA World Nationals, but they failed to reach the finals. In June, the "Blue Max" made it into another final round at the NHRA Springnationals. Raymond had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.05 at 234.37. Bob Pickett got out of shape against him in the first round, and his 6.20/219 advanced. In round two, Beadle went up against Texas neighbor Bernstein. The "Max's" 6.15/235 beat the "Budweiser King's" 6.21/233. Another 6.15/227 in the semifinals took out Hoover's 6.36/202. This put him into the final against 24-year-old Craig Epperly in Don Tait's car. This had the makings of an upset, and it was. Both recorded 6.21 (Beadle at 236.84), but Epperly scored his first NHRA National event victory while Beadle had to settle for runner-up. On July 4, the team was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.23/229.59 behind Bernstein's 6.17. These two worked their way to the final. Beadle survived a close first-round race with Henry Harrison, where his 6.32/230.17 just beat Henry's 6.33/209. In the semifinals, he improved to 6.21/229.59 in stopping Meyer's Citation at 6.49/219. This put the two Texas cars in the final together. But again, the "Blue Max" team had to settle for the runner-up spot as Beadle's 6.32/202.24 lost to Kenny's 6.21/234. The following week (July 12), things went their way as Beadle beat Meyer to win the IHRA Northern Nationals. Then it was off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where both he and Bernstein qualified with 5.86s. Kenny got the pole while Raymond qualified #2, but his speed of 245.23 was tops for the meet. A first-round 6.11/219.51 beat John Collins, but he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Mike Dunn. The team then went to Brainerd for an eight-car show.In the first round, Beadle's 6.46/222.77 beat Carl Swenson's 6.56/221. He then set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.22/226.70 over Dunn's tire-smoker in the "Hawaiian." He faced Tom Hoover in the final; this time, the "Blue Max" went up in tire smoke and lost. | Craig won Indy and had two runner-up finishes to take his second straight championship. Set mph record. The photo from Columbus, where he was runner-up to Craig Epperly. |

Notes: Blown fuel, late hemi, direct drive dragster-style funny. 200" chassis with an 18' long Dart roadster body draped over it. Driver Emery Cook sat in the trunk, slingshot-style. Constructed by Garlits after the rear-engine Dart Charger he purchased from Dick Branstner (later renamed, repainted the Polka Dart, later yet renamed and repainted one final time as Garlits Dart) was destroyed in a crash at Detroit. This "funnier-than-most" car became the first ultra-stock to crack the 200-mph barrier with an 8.03/200.44 blast at St. Petersburg, Fla., in mid-October '66. - RT | This car was supposed to have run 7.92 in September and 192.30 at Cordova. But I have never been able to confirm the 7.92 - Bret Kepner, 7.23 |

Notes: Consistently fast machine with a stock stroke motor. Won 1977 IHRA Dixie Nationals and World Nationals. Set 245.23 NHRA Record at Martin MI on 8/77. Stood through 1979, at least. Dale ran 6.24 at Pomona, 6.29 at Columbus, 6.36 at Englishtown, and 6.16 at Indy. | If I had to choose the season Pulde was most successful, it was a toss-up between '77 and '85. It would go to this "War Eagle" car for sentimental reasons. Pulde started the '77 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3. A 6.25 in the first round beat Jake Johnston, but he lost to Gary Burgin in round two. He went to the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ran 6.24 to qualify and finished runner-up to Eddie Pauling in Johnny Loper's Monza. The final was very interesting as Pauling had his Monza's fiberglass body come up the chassis, and he ran 13.70. Pulde had been high-tailing his out-of-shape car to an 8.55 but was said to have crossed the centerline and was disqualified. There was almost a fight as crew chief Mike Hamby argued with track personnel and Pauling about the finish. Mike said the car touched the line but did not go over it. Regardless, the decision stood. Another runner-up finish came at Rockingham on May 1 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Dale set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.14/234.37 before losing to Ken Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the final. He won the NHRA Division 3 points race at Indianapolis and the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where he set Low ET at 6.24 before beating Tom McEwen in the final. Another win came his way at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race held there. He beat Chuck Finders in the final with a 6.22/236.22 (Top Speed). His next win came at the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo on June 5. He had beaten Jerry Boldenow and Safford to reach the finals, where he stopped Ray Sherman for the title. Bristol was the team's next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Pulde qualified #2 with a 6.45. Another 6.45 at 227.27 beat Safford in the opening round, and in round two, his 6.39/222.22 beat Denny Savage's 6.42/224. In the semifinals, Dale set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.28/233.76, covering Johnny White's ailing Mustang. He went up against Larry Fullerton in the title round. Fullerton's Mustang broke, and Pulde legged it to 6.30/233.76 for yet another win. It was off to Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals on July 4. A 6.33 qualified #2, but in the first round, he and Fullerton both smoked the tires, with Larry's 8.23/152 winning over Pulde's 9.45/107.91. The following week (July 10), the "War Eagle" was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Pulde only qualified #14 with a 6.36/234.98. In the first round, his 6.46 lost to Sherman's 6.33. Two weeks later, Pulde was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he reset the IHRA Funny Car speed record to 241.28. The funnies were flying here, and Dale qualified #2 with a 6.21. He then beat Shirl Greer and Tom Prock to reach the final, facing Burgin. The two had an amazing race, with Pulde running 6.09/241.28 only to lose to Burgin's 6.08. He made up for his runner-up finish by winning the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Byron Dragway on July 31. He qualified with a 6.80/222 and then set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.37/235.60 (track record). In the final, all he needed was a 6.67/191 to beat a tire-smoking Bill Pryor at 7.22/194. That was followed by a win at Englishtown's Eighth Annual Funny Car Race of Champions on August 4. All ten cars were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Dale ran 6.47/234 to beat Gordon Mineo in his first race, and a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.34/236 beat a fouling Burgin in his second race. His final-round opponent was Arnie Swensen, who had gotten the second-lowest ET with a 6.42. Dale got the victory with another strong run of 6.35/235. A couple of days later (August 7), he was at Atlanta Dragway for the IHRA Nationals. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until the semifinals before the car broke on the line, advancing eventual winner Dale Emery into the final. A week after that (August 14), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where he reset the NHRA Funny Car speed record to 245.23. It was another sixteen-car field, and Pulde set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.00/247.93 over John Pott. He "slowed" to 6.20/240 in round two to beat Ron Colson's 6.52 in the "Hawaiian," and a semifinal 6.13/245.23 beat Bob Pickett's 6.21. In the final, he went up against Burgin. Pulde had difficulties and slowed to a 15.22 in a runner-up finish to Burgin's 6.61/231. Dale qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.29/240.00 at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships on August 21. But he boiled the tires in the second round and lost to Emery, who would win in Mike Burkhart's Camaro.Pulde qualified #8 at Indy for the NHRA U.S.Nationals, but he fell off to 6.56/225.56 in the first round and lost to Al Segrini's 6.39/225. |

Notes: Cruz Pedregon started the NHRA season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 4.935/307.06. An opening round 5.08/296.06 beat Gary Densham, and in round two, his 5.12/299.10 took out Dale Pulde. He faced John Force in the semifinals, and Cruz smoked the tires and lost to John's 5.25/298. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.17 qualified #4, but he fouled against Kenji Okazaki in the first round. Only sixteen cars showed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, so qualifying wasn't an issue - Pedregon's 5.16/300.30 got him the #8 spot in the field. In round one, he beat Whit Bazemore with a 5.21/268.89, followed by a second round 5.11/297.02 that advanced over a fouling Al Hofmann. But in the semifinals, he and Force had a good race that saw Force's 5.08/300 outrun Cruz's 5.13/301.30. |

Notes: First 280 mph run in history. Also 5.48 at 273.14 at Ennis All Stars 4/87 (no records set at that event). Set national record at 270.43 at 87 Summernationals. Then at Indy, ran 278.89, but did not back it up. However, did run 274.64, which the 278.89 backed up for the record. Finally, reset national record at 280.72 at Chief Nats. Ran 279.93 at Ennis 10/87 to back up record. Set ET record at 5.443 at Chief Nats (but ran 5.405 in qualifying). Duplicated 280.72 at World Finals (at 5.419). Photo from Indy 1987. | Mike was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #3 with a career best (to this point) 5.56/266.42. In the first round, he broke a blower pulley and slowed to 6.50/143.35 in a loss to Dale Pulde's 5.80/246. |

Notes: Also Ran NHRA's fastest speed at 264.86 at the World Finals. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Prudhomme started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He ran 5.98 to qualify #6 in the eight-car field. John Force banged a blower in the first round, and Don advanced with a 5.99/238.09. In the semifinal, he ran 6.04/229, but he had gotten out of shape and crossed the centerline. His opponent, John Collins, advanced to the final with a tire-smoking 9.13. The following weekend, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Nothing went right there for the "Snake," as the best run he could make was a 7.92/111.96. Obviously, that failed to qualify. After that bad showing, things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Don's 5.80/252.10 qualified #11. He improved to 5.78/251 in the opening round to beat Force. In round two, the car went into heavy tire shake, and he shut off against Collins, who advanced with a 5.74. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 6 for the Coor's Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, tire shake did him in again, where he clicked it off to 9.45 in a first-round loss to Johnny West's 6.59. Shortly after that, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Prudhomme qualified #7 with a 5.90/253.52. He continued to look strong in round one, where his 5.88/252.95 beat Jim Head's 6.07/246. In the second round, his opponent, Ron Correnti, sheared a fuel pump and the "Snake" advanced with a 5.94/249.58. But that was it, as an off-pace 6.12/204.73 lost to the eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 5.75/254 in the semifinal. It was no secret that Prudhomme was not running up to par, nowhere was it more evident than at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He blew an engine during qualifying. He blew up another one in the first round, while beating Al Segrini. Yet another engine was lost on a 5.83/237 in round two that beat Mark Oswald's 5.85/257 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He was supposed to run Dale Pulde in the semifinal, but he gave up and packed up for the home as he was out of parts. |

Notes: McEwen was at Fontana on September 25, where he made three exhibition runs. His times were 9.63/152.54, 9.60/154.63, and an out-of-shape 11.89/145.16. Rear-engine blown fuel. This replaced the Cuda he crashed earlier in the year. Tom sold the car to Fred Goeske in 1966. The photo is actually from early 1966 but reflects the late 1965 second car. Don Montgomery's "Dragster and Funny Car Memories" book quotes unattributed times of 8.88/178.92. Per Chris Martin, Tom ran 8.82/171 at Lions on the night that Dyer ran the great 8.63. Notes: Was also sponsored by High Performance World | If memory serves me correctly, this was Joe Pisano's '83 Camaro, formerly driven by Tripp Shumake, purchased by Cowin, then lengthened (with Pontiac nose & tail) while in the US in 1985. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Made a splash on the second half of the NHRA national event trail in 1985: Indy - #11 qualifier at 5.770/257.43. Lost a close one on a holeshot to John Force in round one, 5.835/253 to 5.813/253.80 (MOV - .015 seconds, about 5.5 feet). Maple Grove - #10 qualifier at 5.781/255.24. Shut off to a 14-second run against Dale Pulde in round one. Seattle - #10 qualifier at 5.924/247.25. Shut off to a 15-second run against Force in round one. Pomona World Finals - #7 qualifier at 5.776/257.87. Put a big holeshot on Al Segrini in round one, but Al came around him for the win, 5.760/248.48 to 5.829/243.50 (MOV .042 - about 16 feet). We need to confirm where 5.67/266 numbers came from. I remember them, but it was not on the 1985 NHRA national event trail. The 266.27 was reported in an Aussie drag mag in December 1985. Probably an IHRA national event. |

Notes: Won Winston Invitational in 1992. Made history in round one at Ennis, when Mark Oswald powered to the best Funny Car speed ever, 5.163/293.06, in beating Dale Pulde. Mark also went 5.161 at Seattle and 5.188/290.79 at Maple Grove. We think he drove the Petosa Bros. car exclusively starting in Gainesville (he definitely drove it there). The team qualified well at every event but suffered terrible consistency problems on race day, leaving them first or second-round losers for most of the year. We need to confirm that he did not run the In-N-Out Cutlass at any of the other late-season NHRA events. |

Notes: Jim showed up at Columbus driving this Cutlass rather than the Daytona-bodied car he had been running in the first half of the season. He had many problems, and his 7.84/117.89 best failed to qualify. Epler then went to Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals, where although he improved to 5.75/263.15, he still failed (third alternate)to qualify. He debuted a new McKinney-built Cutlass at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where his 5.49/241.15 qualified #5. He fell off to 5.68/215.82 in the first round in a loss to Bruce Nilsen's 5.56/257. He did not race at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals, but he was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.17/287.44. An easy 6.57/134.77 advanced in the first round when Gordon Mineo broke. In the second round, his 5.22/247.11 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.20/287. He skipped going to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Jim's 5.25/291.54 (Top Speed) qualified #7. He improved to 5.23/263.85 over Paul Smith's 5.32/261 in the first round. Freddie Neely fouled against him in round two, and Jim took it easy at 7.38/117.61. In the semi-final, his 5.22/291.26 lost to Kenji Okazaki's 5.19/270. Maple Grove was the next stop on the NHRA tour, and Epler qualified #6 for the Keystone Nationals with a 5.22/279.06. In round one, his 5.29 fell to Cruz Pedregon's 5.24. First funny car over 300 MPH and ninth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club (including Top Fuel) on October 3/1993, with a 300.40 at Topeka, Kan. |

Notes: Meyer started the '82 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.97/241.28. In the first round, his tire-smoking 6.38/240.64 beat Dennis Geisler. In the second round, he was upset as Doc Halladay's 6.10/234 beat his 6.18/238.72. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 6.13/239.99 qualified #12. He beat Mike Dunn's 6.31/232 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.29/237.46. But in round two, he lost to John Force. In April, he was at OCIR's 64 car show, where he reached the final only to have his 6.11 finish runner-up to Don Prudhomme's 6.00.The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Meyer qualified #1 for the tough eight-car field with a 5.89/249.30 (Top Speed). In the opening round, he slowed to 6.22/207.85 and lost to Paul Smith's 6.05/241 in the "Entertainer." He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.02 and lasted until the semifinals when he shut off due to tire shake and lost to John Pott in Larry Coogle's "Sting." Shortly after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he got another runner-up finish. His 6.38/247.23 (Top Speed) finished second best to Raymond Beadle's 6.35/233 in the "Blue Max." His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car field, and his 6.00/242.58 qualified #3. In the first round, Meyer's 6.09/244 beat Tripp Shumake's 6.21/235. But he smoked the tires in the semi-final and shut off against Prudhomme. He was also running really well at Columbus in mid-June for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 5.96/246.57 qualified second behind Prudhomme's 5.92/248. Meyer beat Smith in round one before losing to eventual winner Frank Hawley who was driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in round two. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He really found some horsepower as his 5.92/254.23 (Top Speed and a new track record) qualified second to Beadle's 5.88. He also ran 253.52 on an earlier qualifying pass. Although Meyer lost to Tom Anderson in the first round, his speed was tops for the meet, even better than the TF dragsters! He didn't run as well as he hoped to at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.08/240.64 qualified #6 in the eight-car show. In the first round, his 6.23/223.88 fell to Hawley's 6.10/224. The car continued to make power at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Billy qualified #1 and once again set Top Speed of the meet over TF cars as well with a 254.23. But he smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to John Pott. Doing it at the IHRA events was one thing, but when he got to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and did it again, well, that was another thing. He reset both ends of the NHRA record with backed-up 5.829/254.95 marks during qualifying. Once again, he had Top Speed of the meet as Mark Oswald had Top Speed for the TF cars with a 254.23. Billy then ran 5.89/250.69 in the first round over Hawley. But that dreaded tire smoke did him in for round two, where he dialed in too much power and lost to Mike Dunn in the "Hawaiian." Meyer was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of July. He set Low ET and Top Speed during qualifying at 6.12/240.00 (Top Speed over TF cars as well). His time would have qualified #5 for TF. He then defeated Rob Williams' 6.47 with a 6.14/236.22, and a 6.19/223.88 took out Kenny Bernstein's 6.17/233 in the semi-final. He faced the "Blue Max" in the final, and Beadle shut down to 6.85/149 while Meyer ran 6.16/235.60 for the victory. He almost followed that up with another win the week later (August 8), when he finished runner-up to Dale Pulde at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. Shortly after that, he was back at OCIR for its Summer Showdown event. Billy showed up with his new EXP and ran 6.07/217.38 on his first qualifying pass. On his second attempt, the car broke a rear end. He then unloaded his Firebird and used it in the race.In round one, his 5.92/251.39 (Top Speed) beat Jim Dunn's 6.29/231. Dunn's run qualified him for the semi-final as ten cars had run the first round, with the four lowest ETs advancing to the final four. So once again, the two raced with the same results. This time Meyer ran 5.98/249.30 over Jim's 6.24/213. He faced the Low ET car of John Lombardo in the final, and both had horrible runs, but Meyer's troubled 8.21/107 got the win over John's 10.17. He was nowhere near as fast as the TF dragsters at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Meyer continued to run his Firebird here as he would in all the remaining NHRA events. He qualified #4 for the eight-car show with a 5.98/250.00 (Top Speed), but at this event, Oswald reset the NHRA top fuel speed record to 256.41. Meyer's opponent, Anderson, fouled in the first round, so he advanced with a 6.18/218.96. In the semi-final, his 6.08/247.93 lost to eventual winner Hawley's 5.97/238. Billy became the second funny car over 250 on July 17, 1982, with a 250.69 at the NHRA Summernationals (second entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car). His 254.95 was the highest speed of the year except for Oswald's top fuel car, which went 256 and 255 (twice). | In May, at an OCIR open 8-car MD benefit event, Billy Meyer won FC, Johnny Abbott TF. That '97 at Pomona was off and on the throttle, tire shake. Bill Flournoy from '81 was still the CC at the beginning of the year. An NOS ad in May '82 prior to his OCIR/Muscular Dystrophy win said he'd been 252 in Ohio. Salem? A check out run at the MD event: 6.11/246. Meyer used a Larry Minor TF motor, Crower box and the whole nine, at the 64-FC OCIR events. On week two they removed the scoop for visibility. Absent week two: Burgin, Iverson, whose Camaro broke something expensive-sounding on the dry hop at the first one. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Speed run at IHRA Ennis in 10/88 was the fastest AA/FC speed of the decade. Photo from 1988 Bristol, Tenn. Scott was at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals in August. He qualified #6 with a 5.395/270.43 and in the opening round, beat Johnny West in the "Hawaiian” with a 5.399/270.67. But in round two, he went into a wheelstand a shut off against Brad Tuttle. Shortly after that, he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. He qualified #4 for the eight-car field, but smoked the tires in the first round, and shut off to a 6.58/159 loss to eventual winner Mark Oswald's 5.55/266 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. At Sonoma, for the NHRA California Nationals, his 5.439/271.90 qualified #3. Went 5.434/271.32 at NHRA Indy. Went 5.483/276.24 at NHRA Ennis Spring. Low ET and number 1 qualifier at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at 5.514. Went 5.490/263.62 at the NHRA Summernationals. |
