Notes: Dale's season didn't turn out the way he would have liked. For the first time in ten years of competition, he failed to reach a single final round in NHRA or IHRA events. He did run 5.60s with a 5.690 at Pomona and a 5.64 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Pulde started the season with a first-round loss to Frank Hawley at the NHRA Winternationals. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00/243.90, but in the first round, the Firebird broke, advancing Al Segrini. His first IHRA event was the Winternationals held at Darlington on March 5. Dale qualified #11 with a 6.11, but he again lost in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he lasted until the second round, where he fouled against eventual winner Billy Meyer. Rockingham hosted the second IHRA race on May 6, the Pro-Am Championships. Pulde ran well but failed to make the finals. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had an eight-car field that made qualifying tough. Pulde made the show and beat Jim White in the first round, with an engine destroying 5.99/238. Unfortunately, he could not race Meyer in the semifinals due to the damage. He had another semifinal finish at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Pulde had downed Tom McEwen in round two with a 5.83/227.84 before losing to Meyer in the semis. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00/234.98, but in the first round, McEwen's 5.93/247 stopped his off pace 7.39/120. Dale got a final round appearance at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #2 with a 5.86 and made it into the final, but the car broke, and Hawley soloed to win in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He qualified #6 with a 5.87/232.55 at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. His 6.08/227.84 lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle's 5.96/247 in the "Blue Max." After Denver, he was still holding in the seventh spot in the NHRA points. Pulde qualified well at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals, but he lost early in eliminations. The next NHRA event on the schedule was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Dale qualified #4 and lasted until round two before losing to Jim Head. Dale ran 5.86/247 at ADRA Dragway 42. Photo from Indy 1984. |

Notes: Al started the season by qualifying #3 at the NHRA Winternationals at 5.862/255.68. His speed was a new Pomona track record. He went on to win the race by first beating a blower popping John Collins with a 5.904/246.57 and then running 5.929/250.69 over a tire-smoking John Lombardo. In the semifinals, both he and John Force were on and off the load pedal in a tire-smoking contest that saw the "Super Brut" come out on top, 6.507/229.59 to 6.72/242. In the final, he ran Tim Grose. It was a good race, and Segrini won with a 5.967/234.98 over Tim's 6.03/247. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.881/248.61 qualified #7. He advanced past the first-round with a 12.81/56.07 when opponent Dale Pulde broke. He lost to Billy Meyer in the second round, 6.17/226 to a 9.73. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9 with a 6.09. Unfortunately, he lost early. NHRA's next event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, and Al qualified #8 at 5.903/250.69. He beat a coasting Mike Dunn in round one, 5.900/246.57, but lost to Grose in an incredible second-round matchup, 5.945/243 to 5.945 (no speed). Grose's .542 to .557 starting line advantage made the difference. Al qualified #15 at NHRA's Cajun Nationals at 6.118/239.36 and surprised Raymond Beadle in round one, 6.200/220.58 to 9.29. Al lost to Jim Head in round two. Head got no times but finished ahead of Al's 7.71/250.69. Strange! Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. He ran well, but he lost to Denny Savage in round two. Things didn't go so well at the NHRA Springnationals, where his best of 6.025/247.93 failed to qualify (first alternate). He did better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #13 in a short 14-car field at 6.252/232.88, but he lost to Dale Pulde in round one, 5.94/233 to 6.053/236.84. Segrini qualified on the "bump" at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals at 6.043/247.93, but another first-round loss came at the hands of Mike Dunn, 5.88/250 to 5.990/246.57. Al qualified #12 at 6.009/242.58. In round one, he lost to Pulde, 5.93/249 to a 13-second shutoff. Al's 5.874/250.69 grabbed the #10 slot at Indy, but again he lost a close one in round one, to Ed McCulloch, 5.86/248 to 5.885/244.56. That was Al's last NHRA national event in the Super Brut car. He began racing with Joe Pisano in the post-season and into 1985. Photo from 1984 Cajun Nationals. Formerly listed 5.765 for this year. Did Al run that somewhere off the NHRA tour? Removing that until we get validation. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Also 5.49 at Ennis All Stars race in April. Battle for Funny Car ET record at Ennis 87 was amazing: John Force (5.453), Mark Oswald (5.449), Mike Dunn (5.443), and Force (5.396) all reset the mark, but Ed McCulloch finally landed the mark with the 5.366 (with a best speed of 271.73). Later went 272.06 at Pomona Finals 87. | Ed started the season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.00/240.00. A 5.95/238.72 beat Tom Hoover's 5.97/238 in the first round, but he lost a clutch in the semifinals and lost to Kenny Bernstein. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 5.59/266.11 to qualify #5. He picked up to 5.53/266.90 in the first round, to beat Tom McEwen's 5.68/247. In the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 11.28/74.75 loss to Bernstein. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to McEwen. The following week (March 22) found the team at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Ed qualified #2 with a 5.57/266.58 behind Bernstein's track record 5.47. Billy Meyer broke against him in the first round, and McCulloch advanced with a 5.62/256.84. In round two, his 5.58/265.09 took out John Force's 5.69/257. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Johnny West's 5.76/252 in the "Hawaiian." Then came the NHRA Winston All Star race on April 5th at the Texas Motorplex. Ed qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 5.49/273.05, but he broke in the first round, against Meyer. Only sixteen FC's showed for the sixteen available spots at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals so qualifying was easy. Still, Ed laid down a 5.68/262.85 to qualify #3. A 6.01/252.45 advanced in round one, when Doc Halladay lost a blower belt and in round two he beat a tire-smoking Hoover with a 5.66/260.94. But he lost to eventual winner Bernstein in the semifinals. Ed did not race at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, choosing to go to Famoso for the Bakersfield meet that was running on the same weekend in early May. He ran 5.68/260.11 to qualify #2 behind Force's 5.66. These two would work their way into the final. McCulloch's first-round 5.85/256.41 beat Don Prudhomme who overpowered the track and smoked his tires. A 5.79/259.36 beat Jim Murphy in the semifinals. Force and McCulloch had a good race in the final, but Force's 5.72/260 got the victory over Ed's 5.79/236.84. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. A 5.88/252.38 qualified #5. He beat Eric Reed in round one, with a 5.87/257.50, but the car broke in round two giving Bernstein a free trip into the semifinals. Because of the Cajun Nationals being postponed one week due to rain, it was run on the same weekend as the IHRA Springnationals and subsequently, Ed did not run at Bristol. He did run a week later (June 7) at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.51 at 263.92 while beating Hoover and a semifinal 5.58/257.14 solo advanced to the final when Steve Hodkinson failed to show. In the final, he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" T-Bird. Mark got the victory with a 5.60/265 while Ed continued to wait for his first victory of '87. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #3 with a 5.74/252.52. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" before sleeping on the line in round two where his 5.81/253.95 lost to Meyer's 5.86/250. NHRA's Grandnationals in Canada had only fifteen cars show for the sixteen-car field, but McCulloch still ran hard registering a 5.72/258.32 to qualify #2 behind Force at 5.68. Ed's 5.76/250.69 in the first round, beat West's 5.83/257. A second round 5.88/247.38 took care of Jim Head and in the semifinals, his 5.74/248.07 got the best of Oswald. Once again, he was in a final, and he faced Force again. The results were the same as they had been at the Bakersfield race, John won with a 5.65/257 while Ed shut off with problems. He suffered a first-round loss to Darrell Amberson at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he lost to McEwen in the first round. That after qualifying #7 with a 5.67/256.77. The team was long overdue for a win. It didn't happen at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 5.87/243.96 qualified #7, and he beat Craig Epperly and West with times of 5.96/235.47 and 6.14/229.00 to reach the semifinals. Crew chief Bernie Fedderly dialed in too much power and Ed smoked the tires and lost to Force's 5.88/245. On August second, Seattle held an Funny Car show with ten Funny Car's running two rounds with the two lowest ET's running in the final. Ed ran 5.75/258.88 over Gary Densham and 5.78/253.52 over Beadle's quicker 5.76/249. His first-round 5.75 made the final where he ran Force who made the final with a 5.63. Once again, John gave Ed another runner-up finish with his 5.67/256 beating the "Miller" car's 5.72/254.95. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Ed qualified #6 with a 5.64/257.73. He shut off to a 9.26/90.66 win in the first round, when McEwen broke, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 17.94/44.25 loss to Bernstein's 5.57/265. Finally, a win! On August 30, he won the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk. He qualified #2 behind Oswald and then beat Scott Kalitta and Halladay before stopping Oswald in the final. For a team running this well it was a long wait for its first win of the season. Then it was off to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. The Big Bud Shootout was run in conjunction with this race and Ed qualified third for the eight-car field based on qualifying results for the past year. He lasted unit round two where he broke an oil line and shut off against Oswald. The following day for the Nationals, Ed qualified #5 with a 5.61/268.01. A first-round 5.79/259 beat Tim Grose's 5.97/241. In round two the car broke a crank and went into a fireball in a loss to Bernstein. Ed got the car stopped and he was OK. RH |

Notes: Rick Howard photo at 1996 US Nats, Indy. Fogged in by his own burnout smoke, Whit qualified 6th at 5.08/300.50 and was dropped by Del Worsham in round one. | Whit Bazemore got a new ride for '96. He replaced Gordie Bonin behind the wheel of the "Smokin' Joe's" Mustang. He ran really well at Pomona for the season opening NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #4 with a 5.13/283.82. An even better 5.12/296.93 advanced in the first round, when Tom Hoover broke, but in round two his 5.28/265.48 lost to John Force's 5.11/297. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Whit’s 5.17/290.69 qualified #6. He beat Al Hofmann in the opening round with a 5.20/273.22 and a second round 5.31/265.40 took out Gary Bolger. Unfortunately, he lost to Chuck Etchells in the semifinals. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.17/280.63 qualified #9, but he fell off to a 5.84/195.48 in the opening round that lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.21/268. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Slick 50 Nationals. Bazemore qualified #14 with a 5.30/232.61. A first-round 5.45/228.54 did him no good against Hofmann's 5.09/298. The next event was the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. It was only an eight-car show and Whit qualified #7 with a 5.32/281.07. His 5.38/281.42 in the first round, lost to Pedregon's 5.22/293. A week later (April 21), he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. The team was stuck in the 5.30s, only running a best of 5.38/279.06 to qualify #10. A first-round 5.37/286.89 narrowly beat Tim Wilkerson's 5.39/219. In round two, opponent Jeff Arend broke and Whit advanced with a 5.58/200.26. He then made his best run of the weekend, a 5.34/286.07, but it wasn't enough to beat Tony Pedregon's 5.05/296 in the semis. |

Notes: The second car under 5.30. Set two national records at 1988 Gators, 5.333 then 5.314. Low qualifier at Indy with a 5.330. Photo from Columbus 1988. | Kenny started the '88 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.57. In the first round, an improved 5.53/257.14 beat Jim Dunn, but in the semifinals, the car broke and he lost to John Force. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.41. A 5.42 in the first round, beat Don Prudhomme, but in round two he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. More problems kept him from the winner's circle at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Bernstein set Top Speed in qualifying with a 271.90 pass and in round one, his 5.40/267.06 beat Dominic Santucci, but in the semifinals, he shut off just off the line giving Force an easy ride into the final. Kenny broke through with a win at the next race, the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.37/272 and in the first round, beat Chuck Etchells with a 5.33/278.46 (Top Speed). In round two, his 5.39/274.97 beat R.C. Sherman and a Low ET shot at 5.31 took out Tom Hoover in the semifinals. The 5.31 was a new NHRA record. To top it all off, he beat Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the final with a 5.35/278.12. At Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Bernstein lasted until the semifinals where his 5.72 lost to Force's 5.60. Things didn't go very well at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.64 and in the first round, beat Prudhomme, but in round two, the car broke at about half track, advancing Ed McCulloch into the semifinals. For the first time since the season opener at Darlington, Kenny was back on the IHRA trail at Bristol for the Springnationals. He qualified #1 and a 5.66/253.59 beat Scott Kalitta in the first round, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Dale Pulde. A week later he was in the finals at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. There he ran 5.47 over Johnny West, a 5.53/256 over Prudhomme, and a 5.50/257 over a tire smoking Oswald in the semifinals. In the final, he lost to an old veteran of the Funny Car wars, Bruce Larson. A 5.44 (Low ET) qualified #1 at the NHRA Springnationals and in the first round, he took out Jim Head. A 5.73/244 beat a tire smoking Pulde, but in the semifinals, he got out of shape and shut off, losing to Force. The wins certainly weren't coming as often as they did in years past and at the NHRA Grandnationals, he fouled in the first round, against Jerry Caminito. Kenny qualified #5 with a 5.56/257.65 while Jerry qualified with a 5.89. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.48/258.39 qualified #3 in the field and he lasted until the semifinals where Larson's 5.57/260 beat his 5.62/255. The "Budweiser King's" next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. It was an eight-car show and Bernstein qualified #1 with a 5.54 (Low ET) at 248.61. He beat Caminito in round one, with a 5.66/248.61 and a 5.62/249.30 beat Santucci in the semifinals setting up a final, round race with Larson. Kenny won that race. After that, he won the NHRA Seafair Nationals at Seattle. A 5.33/269.46 qualified #3. He beat Eric Reed in the first round, and improved to a 5.32/270 in round two to beat Force. In the semifinals, a 5.43/258 beat Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." In the final, he met Brad Tuttle and Bernstein got the win with a 5.35/271.16. The NHRA Winston All-Stars had only eight-car fields in the Fuel categories. Kenny qualified #3 and made it into the final by beating Force with a 5.43/257 and Mike Dunn with a 5.40/262 in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Oswald, and although both ran 5.52, Mark got the win. Bernstein set a 5.40 track record in Sonoma while qualifying #1 for the NHRA California Nationals. Unfortunately, in the first round, he lost to Reed when both ran 5.48, but Eric got the win light. The "Budweiser Team" had an interesting weekend at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Kenny had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.43 at 264.62, but in the first round, against Pulde, he did his burnout and then proceeded to back up to the line. He then found that the transmission was locked into reverse. Crew Chief, Dale Armstrong and fellow crew member Jim Male lifted the body and tried to help Kenny get the car out of reverse. The car lurched forward, hitting both Dale and Jim. Both were OK other than bruises. Pulde singled for the round win. The jokes started coming by the time Bernstein got to Indy. One team had a decal that read "I Break for Crewmen." It was all in good fun as no one got hurt. The Big Bud Shootout was held in conjunction with the NHRA US Nationals. Over the year, the "Budweiser Team" had earned 1,660 points in qualifying at the National events. They were second to Force. The Shootout consisted of the eight best qualifiers over the year. Kenny had won this event in prior years. He won his first-round race with a 5.41/270.18 over Larson's off pace 6.51/134. In the semifinals, it was Kenny who had trouble and his 9.05/83.42 lost to Head's 5.45/269. The next day (September 4), for the US Nationals, he qualified #1 with a 5.33/268.57. He beat Larson again in the first round, with a 5.40/270.51. In round two, a 5.38/267.30 beat Pulde's 5.40/267 and a 5.35/273.97 in the semifinals took out Oswald's 5.42/269. That put him into the final against McCulloch. Ed had just set a 5.32 track record in his semifinal race so he was tough. Kenny ran his best of eliminations in the final, a 5.34/270.83, but he lost to the "Ace's" slight holeshot with a 5.35/271. It was a close race. Bernstein resumed his winning ways at the next NHRA race, the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove on September 18. There, he didn't qualify so well, only running 6.68/134.16 for the #14 spot. He ran even worse in the first round, but his 7.62 advanced when John Martin crossed the centerline on a 5.52 run. Bernstein picked up the pace in round two when both he and opponent Mike Dunn ran 5.38 (Kenny at 266.50), but the red Buick got the win. In the semifinals, Bernstein out drove Pulde as his 5.38/268.49 beat Dale's quicker 5.34/276. Once again he was in the final, and once again his final round opponent was McCulloch. Kenny showed his reflexes were sharp as he once again won with a holeshot. His 5.36/268.49 got the victory over Ed's 5.34/276. |

Notes: Rookie Year, NHRA Champ in 1992 (winning 5 straight races). Also first funny car in the 5.0 zone with a 5.077 qualifier at Maple Grove 9/92, followed by a 5.076 in eliminations. | Cruz started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.20/287.08 (Top Speed). He beat Gordon Mineo in the first round, with a 5.22/286.89, but in round two, his Cutlass broke against Mark Sievers. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.34/279.06. A 5.33/269.78 beat Jerry Caminito in round one, but in round two his engine let go on the line against Johnny West. After breaking in the second round at the first two NHRA events, Pedregon did much better at Houston for the Supernationals. In qualifying, his 5.34/268.41 got him the #8 spot. He improved to 5.29/252.52 in the first round, over Chuck ETchell's quicker 5.26/272. Another holeshot in round two made his 5.18/276.66 a winner over John Force's 5.15/287. Then he really opened some eyes when he reset the NHRA National Record 5.10 at 272.89 in the semifinals to beat A Hofmann's 5.23/273. This put Cruz in the final against veteran, Mineo. A 5.14/284.62 backed up his 5.10 for the record and it was enough to give Pedregon his first NHRA Funny Car Eliminator victory. There was no sneaking up on the field for the NHRA Gatornationals after that, performance. At Gainesville a 5.26/275.98 qualified #4. His 5.20/285.08 beat Paula Martin's 5.37/271 in round one, while a second round 5.21/285.71 beat ETchell's quicker, but later 5.17/281. In the semifinals, crew chief Bernie Fedderly dialed in a little too much horsepower for Cruz's race against Force. As a result, Pedregon smoked the tires to a 5.31/242.78 loss to Force's 5.20/286. There were no points on the line at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. Cruz set a track record 5.26 at 277.26 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, the gremlins persisted and Pedregon broke in the first round. Atlanta was the next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, Cruz qualified #1 with a track record 5.15 at 282.57. It was strange to see his former crew chief, Fedderly helping Force's team for the first time. Pedregon advanced past Freddie Neely in the first round, with a 5.55/239.04 before smoking the tires in round two and losing to Force. He was low man at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.26/272.97. His 5.30/269.38 beat Norm Wilding, but he lost to Whit Bazemore in round two. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.24/277.69 behind Etchells' 5.23. But in round one, he set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 5.17/288.00 to beat Jim Epler. A 5.21/286.62 beat Tom Hoover in round two while a semifinal 5.29/283.19 took out Del Worsham's close 5.31/275. This set up a final against Hofmann. Cruz fouled against Al in the final and shut off to a 6.57/132.29 while Hofmann got the victory with a 5.31/263. |

Notes: Charlie's Charger was in the northwest for most of its existence 'cuz Charlie was in the Army at Fort Lewis. It ran constantly and won nearly every race all of 1971 except the NHRA WCS events - Jerry Ruth won all five. The Charger set the first Funny Car speed record over 220 that year, a 222.22 at Mission, B.C. Hard to forget that number. - Phil Elliott | Charlie Allen claimed both ends of the Funny Car record at 6.82/222.22. - NHRA | Ran 6.82 at Fremont 6/71 (National Record) |At the rain-delayed Fremont Northern Nationals, Allen qualified with a 7.71/142.85. But he was unable to make it back for the race's rain date. On May 1st, he was at Seattle for an eight-car show, but he broke a rear end in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Deer Park for the NHRA Division 6 race. Eventual winner Jerry Ruth's 7.11/204 beat his 7.17/196.92. He made it into the final at the next NHRA Division 6 race held at Bremerton on May 23. Allen qualified #1 with a 7.03. Only six cars showed, and in the first round, he soloed. In the semifinals, his 7.57/207.84 beat Glen Foster. He went up against Ruth in the final, and his car broke at half-track while Ruth bagged another one with a 6.78. Charlie won the KJR Drag Festival in Seattle on June 20. He beat Jerry Ruth in the final with a 6.81/221. |

Notes: The 1969 Chi-Town Hustler Dodge Charger was legendary for its long smoking burnouts and its tough performance. The team claimed that the car had a 90 percent win-loss record in 1969. Minick did the driving, Austin Coil tuned the engine, and John Farkonas was the behind the scenes engineer. The car was built with an offset roll cage for the driver, one of the last funny cars to be built in that configuration. The Hustler ran a best of 7.02 at 206.42, but also ran 7.08, 7.10, and two 7.12s at five different tracks. As tough as the car was in 1969, it became outdated by 1971 and a new car had to be built. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories.) | Minick's 7.02 was run at Union Grove late in '69. He had set the Union Grove track record in August at 7.32/205.46. In September, he reset it to a 7.2, then came the 7.02 late in the year. The 7.2 at Union Grove in September came with a speed of 209.30. Since the car debuted, it became the car to beat in late '69, setting track records everywhere it ran. | At the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Michigan, the team ran well, running a first-round track record 7.33 at 201.78 over Lew Arrington's 7.48/196, and a second round 7.42/200.89 beat Dean LaPole who lost a transmission. In the semifinals, he set Top Speed with a 7.49/202.24 to beat Dick Loehr's 7.54/191. In the final, he met Fred Goeske's Road Runner and the Chi-Town car was favored to win based on ETs, but Pat ran his slowest run of the race, a 7.52/200.88 and lost to Fred's holeshot-aided 7.71/189. He reset the record again at US 131 on August 30. A first-round 7.13/205.46 got both ends of the record while beating Pete Gates. Unfortunately, on the record-breaking pass he hurt the motor and was unable to make the semifinals. The following day (August 31), he broke both ends of the track record at Minneapolis where an eight-car show was being run. A first-round 7.51/201.34 beat Herman Lesmeister's 'Cuda at 8.50/188 and a semifinal 7.40/200 beat Bryan Teal. In the final, he set two track records of 7.29/202.70 to win over Roger Lindamood who lost a transmission. On October 25, Minick reset the Lions track record to a 7.12 at 205.01 during the East/West Championships. A first-round 7.24/199.55 beat the Invader, but a 7.28/201.34 lost to Rich Siroonian's 7.29/198.23 in the second round. The team didn't do so well at Sears Point for the North/South Championships, having a bad oil fire there. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Clare replaced Arnie Behling as the Ramchargers driver for 1973. He started his NHRA tour as the firth alternate at Gainesville (times not available but slower than 6.75). On April 28, he was at Capitol for an eight-car show. All cars there were to run two races with the two cars with the lowest ET's meeting in the final. Sanders ran 6.54/189 in his first race, but he lost to a quick-leaving Tommy Grove, who won with a 6.56/216. In his second race, he beat Bobby Rowe's off-pace 7.33/224 with a 6.73/189. Neither of his times qualified him for the final. Clare qualified #13 at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals at 6.894/216.86. In the first round, he slowed to 7.104/213.77, which lost to Dale Emery's 6.63/209. At Bristol the following week (June 17) for the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #2 with a 6.71. Unfortunately, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. Sanders looked like a sure bet to win at Englishtown on July 4. He beat Jim Liberman in the first round, with a 6.68/215.31, and in the semifinals, his 6.88/211.26 beat the "Boston Shaker." In the final, he was up against Lew Arrington in the "Brutus" Mustang, but he broke a blower pulley and could not run, giving Arrington a solo for the win. Shortly after this, he was at York US 30 for a best of three match race against Liberman. In their first race, Sanders' 6.92/198.23 beat Jim's tire-smoking 7.30/170. In the second race, Clare got severely out of shape and shut off while Liberman legged it through at 7.19/192. With the score now even, they had their "rubber" match. Clare got the win with his 7.32/216.34 topping "Jungle's" 7.50/206. Sanders was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships in August. All cars ran the first-round, with the lowest eight ETs advancing into round two. Clare's 6.49/218.97 easily got him into round two, where he beat Jim Nicoll's 6.66/210 with a 6.58/222.77. But in the semifinals, he fell off to a 6.93/209.79 loss to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.72/201. Almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Sanders' 6.410/225.13 got him the #7 spot for the show. But in the opening round, former "Ramchargers" driver Leroy Goldstein ran 6.37/229 to beat Clare's 6.522/225.00. He reportedly also ran 6.39 and 230.17 this year in addition to a 6.34/219.73 at Lebanon Valley. |

Notes: Twig started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Traction there was non-existent, and he ended up as the seventh alternate for the sixteen-car field. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 7.15 qualified #8 for the sixteen-car show. In the first round, Bob Pickett got crossed up against him in the "Lil Demon." But in round two, his 7.48 lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.25 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. In April, he was at Renegade Raceway in Washington for a best of three match race against Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian." The match didn't go too well as he lost three straight to the Charger. Twig qualified #1 with a 6.67 in the eight-car field at Portland International's opener. In the first round, he got some revenge on Chadderton when his 6.67/208 beat Leroy's 6.77/215. In the semifinals, Zeigler stayed consistent, running 6.68/218.44 to beat Mike Snively's 6.71/196 in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. He faced Gordie Bonin in the final, and Twig had some problems and shut down to 10.53 while Bonin grabbed the victory with his strong 6.64 run. On April 29, Seattle held its annual Northwest Open race. It was a sixteen-car show, and Twig qualified #9. In the opening round of eliminations, his troubled 8.92 lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch's 6.62. Twig was back home at Portland on July 29 for the fourth NHRA Division Six race. He won the race with a 6.69/220.58 in the final over Denny Savage's 7.18/193 in the "Rat Trap." Zeigler did pretty well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He ran 6.394/230.17 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, against Bobby Rowe and shut down to 11.81. Twig qualified #5 at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals with a 6.415/229.68. In the first round, his 6.53/222.77 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.41/226. Twig also ran 6.47 at Portland. Notes: Uyehara looked like the car to beat at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He "only" qualified #12 for the 32 car field with a 6.66/226.13, but he picked up two tenths and ran 6.46/230.17 in the opening round of eliminations to beat John Collins' 6.72/209. That was Low ET of round one, and he also set Low ET of round two with his 6.47/220.04, taking out Larry Christopherson's 6.71/199. Unfortunately, in round three, a blown rear end slowed him to a 7.29 that lost to the eventual winner Don Schumacher, who ran 6.46/218 to advance. Dave was driving Larry Huff's car at the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.97. He lasted until the semifinals before he lost to the eventual winner Tom Hoover. Also reported to have run 6.51 somewhere. |

Notes: Guzman won the NHRA Division 5 Opener in April at Pueblo Motorsports Park. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with a 6.32/219.99. In the final, he beat Dave Benjamin for the title. He won the subsequent Division 5 race at Amarillo, where once again, he set Low ET and Top Speed with 6.29/228.90 times. In the final, he won with a slow 9.75 when Paul Gordon, driving Dick Williams Firebird, crossed the center line and was disqualified. Rob was on his own turf when the NHRA tour ran in Denver at Bandimere for the Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.26 behind Billy Meyer's 6.23. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.29/232.55 beat John Force. He soloed in the semifinals when Henry Harrison fired to fire in the "L. A. Hooker" Corvette. In the final, he met Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" and it took a Low ET of the meet run of 6.19 at 234 to beat Williams close 6.21/233.76 for the victory. It was a good showing for the "Assassination" team. Rob won the NHRA Division 5 race at Bonneville Raceway in July. He qualified #1 with a 6.30/231.37 (Top Speed), then went on to set Low ET at 6.27 while beating Jim Dunn in the final. At the next Division 5 race, Rob again made it into the final, but this time he lost to Bob Pickett. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, his 6.063/239.99 qualified #7. He lost to Tripp Shumake in the first round. He failed to qualify at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. | I have him running the 5.99/242 in '80. I have 5.98 in '81 and 5.92/248 in '82. Notes: Tripp started the '80 season by attempting to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He failed to make the field, and his 6.23/242.58 was good for the third alternate. He competed at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet but failed to reach the late rounds. A week later (March 16), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #2 with a career-best (to this point) 6.023/241.28 (Top Speed of the Meet). Unfortunately, his steering broke in the first round, and he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." He was at the NHRA Divisional race at Beeline, but he shut off to a 9.34 in the first round, and lost to Bob Pickett. On April 20, Shumake grabbed a big win at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. Tripp qualified #4 in the eight-car field. An opening round 6.34 beat Al Baldwin, and in the semifinals, his 6.32 beat a tire-smoking Paul Smith who was driving Larry Coogle's "Sting." In the final, he ran an easy 7.24 when Dale Pulde broke a rear end in the "War Eagle." Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals the following week on April 27, and the eight-car field was a tough one to qualify in. Tripp just made it, qualifying on the "bump" with a 6.18/241.28. Non-qualifiers included Don Prudhomme, Raymond Beadle, and Pulde. In the first round, he beat Tom Hoover's 6.27 with a 6.25/234, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off, giving eventual winner Billy Meyer an easy (?) 6.32/226 ride into the final. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. But he did make the show at the NHRA Springnationals. He lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round, after qualifying #6 with a 6.18/237.46. Tripp also failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shumake qualified #15 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.10/238.72, and in the opening round of competition, his 6.46/230.17 advanced over a tire-smoking Rob Williams. He lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch in round two. |

Notes: The "Hawaiian" team showed up with the new Omni at Pomona. Colson qualified #11 with a 6.15/239.99. His 6.29/233.16 advanced when Raymond Beadle went into a wheelstand in the "Blue Max" and shut off in the first round. In round two, he beat Tom Hoover and, in the semifinals, a 6.34 beat Kosty Ivanof's out-of-shape 7.21. In the final, he faced Dale Pulde. Colson got out of shape and crossed the centerline, giving Pulde the victory. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Ron qualified #10. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.36/210.77 when the second qualifier Tripp Shumake had his steering go out. He got out of shape in round two and shut off against Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's Arrow. Ron was at the Seattle Opener in April. The race featured an eight-car fuel Funny Car show, and Colson won the event. In the final, he beat Tom McEwen with a 6.15/238.09; his final round numbers were good for Low ET and Top Speed. On April 27, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Ron qualified the "Hawaiian" #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.09/242.58. A 6.13/242 beat Dale Armstrong in the first round, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Paul Smith in Larry Coogle's "Sting." He was runner-up to Don Prudhomme at the Olympics of Drag Racing race at Union Grove. At the NHRA Springnationals, Colson qualified #1 with a 6.12/239.36 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, Prudhomme had a lousy time in qualifying and only qualified ninth, setting up a first-round meeting between the two. The "Snake" picked up to a 6.08/222 to get the win over the "Hawaiian's" 6.20/237.46. A the NHRA Summernationals, Ron qualified with a 6.085. That was his best time until the Indy 6.000 in the new Corvette. Did the team run 6.032 somewhere this year? (It was not run in either the Omni or the Corvette at an NHRA national event). |

Notes: Had a terrible crash at Columbus. Original paint. This was the third Datsun body out of the mold behind John Collins and Gary Densham. | Tim was at Edgewater on May 4 for the second NHRA Division Three race. He qualified #2 in the four-car field with a 6.34. In the first round, he beat Murf McKinney and then set Low ET with a winning 6.23/208 in the final that beat Tom Motry. At the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, he qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Rick Johnson in the opening round of eliminations. The car was destroyed in the crash during qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He was ok. Rick qualified #1 and had Low ET at the Grandnationals at 6.197. His best NHRA national event times came in a #13 qualifying 6.095/242.58 at the US Nationals. |

Notes: Lombardo started the '78 season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at OCIR. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the final with a 7.25. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.25/236.22 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.23/238. But in the opening round of eliminations, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 6.93/205.47 loss to Tim Kushi's 6.47/223. Lombardo then won the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont in April. He set Low ET at 6.18 and a 6.33/213.77 grabbed the win when John Force broke in the final. John also set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.27/231.95. But once again, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Tripp Shumake. Not long after that (June 4), he was at Portland for the NHRA Division 6 race. Only six FC's showed, and he qualified #1 with a 6.36/202.24. A 6.33/213.27 beat Nick Harmon in the opening round, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal. He won that by beating Twig Zeigler's 6.52/221 in the final with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.25/229.00. In Mid-June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. John ran 6.24/227.84 to qualify #8, and an opening-round 6.28/222.77 beat an out-of-shape Tom Anderson. In round two, Bob Pickett's 6.46/221 fell to Lombardo's 6.29/229.59. The car stayed consistent in the semifinals, running a 6.26/233.16, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.17/230. On July 1, he won the OCIR Nitro Championships, setting Low ET at 6.05 along the way. He made a stop at Seattle for a best of three match race against Gordie Bonin. Lombardo won two straight with a 6.23 best. John then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.12/240.64 qualified #4, and he beat a fouling Tom Hoover in the first round. In round two, he ran another 6.12 at 236.84 to beat Gordie Bonin, but the car slowed to a 6.33/216.34 in the semifinals that lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.19/236. On July 29, John was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.20, and he set Low ET in round one, where his 6.07/223 defeated Dennis Geisler. Unfortunately, the car broke in round two against Dave Condit John had a great US Nationals, running steady 6.0s in eliminations, but lost a step and the match to Prudhomme in the semis. Best NHRA ET was 6.057 at Indy, where he also duplicated his 240.64 best. |

Notes: This was Bonin's best season since he started driving Funny Cars. It started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he debuted his new Firebird. He qualified #12 with a 6.37, and in the first round, picked up to 6.18/239.36 to beat Dale Emery's close 6.19/229. He then beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" before losing to Raymond Beadle's 6.41 in the "Blue Max" with a quicker, but later 6.40 in the semifinals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified with a 6.35. Bonin ran a best of 6.10 before losing to eventual winner Eddie Pauling's 6.03 in the semifinals. He dominated the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #1 with a 6.26/238.72 (Top Speed). He beat Dodger Glenn in the first round, and then set Low ET in round two with a 6.19/236 over Gary Burgin. In the semifinals, he dispatched Beadle with a 6.64/236. In the final, he raced veteran Roger Lindamood. Bonin took his first NHRA national event victory. Gordie then stopped off at OCIR for an eight-car show where he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.13/240.00 before beating Dale Pulde in the final with a 6.26/236.84. He then won the Portland Funny Car Opener. There he set Low ET and Top Speed with a track record 232.95. The next day he went to Seattle and won its Funny Car Opener. Once again, he had the top times at 6.37/230.00. Bonin beat Terry Capp in the final. On April 9, he was at Irwindale's 64 car race. While he failed to reach the finals, he did run a best of 6.34/235.60. He did reach the final at the NHRA Division Six race at Firebird Raceway. There, his 6.58/227.76 times were good for both Low ET and Top Speed, but in the final, he fouled against Rob Bruins, who was driving the "Green Elephant." Gordie won the NHRA Division 6 race at Mission Raceway. He was runner-up at the third Division 6 race in Seattle. He set Low ET at 6.22 before running 6.57/219.51 in the final only to lose to Mike Miller's 6.37/231. In June, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. Bonin qualified #9 at 6.25/233.76, and in the first round, low qualifier, Burgin, fouled away a 6.15/234 while Bonin advanced with a 6.27/226.70. A second-round 6.29/230.76 advanced over Tom McEwen's troubled 10.12. In the semifinals, he smoked the tire to a 7.09/133.18 in a losing effort to Don Prudhomme, who was long gone with a 6.17/235. He was runner-up to John Lombardo at the OCIR Nitro Championships before winning Woodburn's fourth NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.29/229.59 while beating Mike Miller in the final. He did not compete at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. On July 31, he was at Portland for a 32 car show, and while he failed to reach the final, he set Top Speed at 224.43. Up in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 7, Gordie qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.36/229.59. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Prudhomme. Don ran 6.21/234 to beat Bonin's 6.29/227. A week later (August 13), he was at Firebird Raceway for the Night Fire 500 race. All ten cars there made two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gordie didn't make the final, but he did win his two races. A 7.21/215.74 beat Beadle in his first race, while he shut off when Twig Zeigler fouled against him in his second race. The NHRA Division 6 final was held at Portland International on August 19, and Gordie set Low ET and Top Speed on a first-round single with a 6.20/236.22. He then beat Miller to reach the final only to have Beadle gate him off the line, and his 6.33/225.56 lost to Raymond's 6.34/227. Bonin was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 21. He qualified #1 with a 6.34/230.17, and in round one, his 6.30/230.76 solo advanced when Jim Liberman lost fire. Gordie had another solo in round two when Capp shut off, and Bonin advanced with a 6.38/219.50. He looked like he was on his way to another win as his times were the best in each of the first two rounds, but he failed to hear the call for his semifinal race against Beadle, and the "Blue Max" was able to make a solo run into the final. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.106/240. An off-pace 6.62/224.43 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.36/216 in the first round. Only fifteen cars showed up at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, so qualifying wasn't a problem. Still, Bonin ran 6.28/234.98 (Top Speed) to qualify #5 for the show. A 6.42/222.77 advanced over Bob Papirnick in the first round, but in round two, his 6.40/230.76 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.28/223. Irwindale held its last race ever on October 1, and Gordie was there. It was a sixteen-car field, and Bonin ran 6.69/223 in the first round, over Tom McEwen, and in round two, Prudhomme broke on the line, and Gordie advanced with an easy run. In the semifinals, he faced Lombardo and Bonin ended up having traction problems and shutting off while John ran 6.28/193 to advance. At Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals, Gordie ran 6.19/239.36 to qualify #5. Bob Pickett broke against him in the opening round of eliminations, and his 6.19/232 advanced. A strong 6.16/239 beat low qualifier Burgin's 6.25 in round two, and in the semifinals, a 6.22/232 beat Tommy Ivo's troubled 11.68. The final came down to Bonin vs. The "Snake." Prudhomme had run been running like a bracket racer, hitting 6.06 on all three runs in eliminations, not to mention his 6.05 in qualifying. So it looked like Bonin was done. But, both slowed to 6.3's in the final, and Bonin's 6.31/228.42 triggered the win light ahead of Don's 6.36/238. | Runner-up to Mike Miller at Seattle PDA. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Ron qualified #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.96/309.06. In the opening round, his 5.13/292.30 beat Jeff Arend. Del Worsham smoked the tires against him in round two, and his 5.00/310.55 advanced. In the semi-final, both hm and his opponent, Tony Pedregon, smoked the tires, with Capps recovering first to win with a 5.92/292.11. He smoked the tires again in the final, but his 6.60/211.71 was enough to win as Tim Wilkerson had his own problems and crossed the centerline. He also made the final at NHRA's next event, the Arizona Nationals held at Firebird Raceway. He "only" qualified #8 at 5.23/273.30, but the car came to life in round one, where his 4.97/301.20 beat Dale Creasy Jr.Al Hofmann went up in tire smoke against him in round two, and Capps ran 5.07/302.01. In the semi-final, he and Dean Skuza had a good race that saw Capp's 5.03/286.80 get the win over Skuza's 5.06/225. He faced Chuck Etchells in the final, and Ron shut down to 8.63/92.40 while Chuck got the victory with a track record 4.94/312. |

Notes: Ed qualified #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/253.52. In the first round, his 5.82/240.64 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.69/250. Luck was on the "Ace's side at the NHRA Gatornationals. He didn't qualify very well, with a 5.98/233.16 (#14). He went on to win the race by beating Brad Tuttle in the first round, where they both ran 5.74 (Ed at 257.58). In round two, his troubled 6.67/197.36 advanced when Mark Oswald boiled the hides in the "Candies and Hughes" car. His tire-smoking, off-pace 6.22/234 beat Scott Kalitta in the semifinals, putting him in the final against another long-time veteran, Tom McEwen. The "Mongoose" had to be considered the favorite based on his 5.67 in the semifinals. Unfortunately, McEwen broke, and the race never came off, so Ed singled for the title with an 11.25/69.63. Due to the Gatornationals being rain-delayed from March 16 to 23, Ed could not run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as they were booked on the same day. He did make IHRA's second race, the Bayou Nationals, on April 13. He made it into the final before losing to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. A week later, he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.86/256.41. He won, but once again, good old racing luck played a part. He beat McEwen in the first round, and in round two, his 6.02/242 got around Billy Meyer's 6.12/244 in a tire-smoking contest. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.95/252.10 when the "Blue Max," with John Lombardo on board, broke a transmission. In the final, the "Ace" lined up with Jim Head. Jim had been having his share of problems, running 6.22 and 8.38 in the previous two rounds. The two left together in the final, and Ed got the victory with a 6.00/247.52 over Head's right there 6.00/250. It was a short field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun National in June. The sixteenth qualifier ran 11.84 and still made the show! McCulloch qualified #14 with a 6.54/168.28. He slowed to a 6.65/162.68 in the first round, which lost to Kalitta's 5.80/252. Crewchief Bernie Fedderly was still having trouble dialing in the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15. A best of 6.00/231.12 qualified #12, but Ed lost to McEwen in the first round. A week later (June 22), the team was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Once again, McEwen beat him, but this time it was in the semifinals. Only twelve cars showed for the eliminator at the NHRA Grandnationals, so qualifying was easy. Ed qualified #9 with a 5.92/249.03. His first-round 5.94/250.69 lost to Johnny West's 5.78/234 in the "Hawaiian." July opened with the team at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.91/247.93 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Ed got a measure of satisfaction in the first round, when his 6.01/245.90 beat a tire-smoking McEwen. But in the semifinals, he lost to Oswald. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Fedderly tuned the car to a 5.88/244.69 in qualifying (#13). But in round one, the "Mongoose" McEwen stopped him. Ed qualified really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 5.87/234.19 got the #4 spot in the thin air. Unfortunately, he again lost in the first round, this time to Steve Hodkinson. By this time, the team needed something good to happen. And it did. They rolled into Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals in the middle of August. Ed qualified so-so with a 5.88/249.30 for the #8 spot in the show. He beat Della Woods in the first round, with a 5.96/241.93. A 5.86/254 beat West in round two, and his 5.98/252 beat a tire-smoking Oswald in the semifinals. That put him in the final with his nemesis McEwen. Ed had problems and shut off to a 22.44/30.82 while Tom motored to the victory with a 5.81/254. Still, it was a good showing for the "Miller American" team. There was one more stop before Indy, which was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Ed qualified #6 in the eight-car show and beat Head in round one, before losing to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Then it was on to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Ed always ran well at Indy, but not so much in '86. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.88/245.73. In the first round, he survived a tire-smoking battle with Craig Epperly that saw Ed's 6.41/243 beat Craig's quicker 6.34/220. In the second round, McCulloch ran 5.92/226.52, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to Oswald's 5.64/260. The following week (September 7), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #4, but he lost in round one. The team then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Ed's 5.80/251.04 qualified #6. Another 5.80 at 246.30 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.91/235 in the opening round. In round two, eventual winner Oswald ran 5.65/262 to beat McCulloch's 5.85/235.17. |

Notes: Chapman Automotive built the 120" frame for the car. The Camaro body came from Fiberglass Ltd. It used an early 354 Hemi that kept its stock displacement. A factory crank was used along with M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. Isky supplied the cam. An Enderle injection unit sat on the 18% overdriven blower that rested on a Cragar intake manifold. The car was run on 70% nitro. An estimated 1,200 hp was on tap. John Hogan helped maintain the engine. A Torqueflite transmission was used that fed the power back to a Ford rear axle carrying 3.90 gears. The car weighed 2,120 lbs. The cost of the project was $15,000. O'Donnell was at Gary, Indiana, for a UDRA Circuit race in August. Going into the race, he held both ends of the track record at 8.07/181. By the end of this race, he would not hold either. His 8.10/180.00 beat Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler," who blew a transmission in the first round. In the semi-final, he ran 8.11, but he lost to Doug Cook's 8.01 in the "Stone, Woods & Cooke" Mustang. Ron drove the car to 7.85/193 at Union Grove. The speed was a track record. | Gary ran 8.30/185.94, 8.36/180.72, and 8.48/181.08 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Also ran 8.19 at Irwindale. - DL |

Notes: Tom debuted a new Daytona at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He had lots of problems and ended up losing two blowers, one in qualifying, and one in a first-round loss against Del Worsham. He qualified #11 with a 5.39/269.92. He went to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where he ran 5.43/272.72 to qualify #10. He lost to Chuck Etchells in the first round. At the seventh NHRA race of the '92 season, he was in Ohio for the Springnationals where a 5.40/256.04 qualified #7. He picked up to a 5.33 at 255.97 to beat Jerry Caminito's 5.59/252 in the first round, but in the second round, he lost to Cruz Pedregon. He made the trip up north for the NHRA Grandnationals at the end of June. He qualified #7 with a 5.44/267.45 and a first-round 5.55/249.03 beat a tire smoking Gary Densham. Once again, he lost to Pedregon in the second round. Tom's 5.46/256.04 finished second best to Cruz's 5.39/274. This started to become routine when at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, he qualified #8 with a 5.33/264.62 and in round one, beat Whit Bazemore's 5.56/263 with a 5.36/258.32. But once again in round two for the third straight race he came up against Pedregon. This time Hoover lost oil pressure on the line and shut off giving Cruz a solo into the semifinals. At Denver in the middle of July for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Tom again made it into the second round. He qualified #6 with a 5.44/257.28 and then improved to a 5.37/265.56 in the first round, while beating Norm Wilding. But in the second round, his 5.57/229.06 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.41/262. |

Notes: Simon won over a sixteen-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet. After an easy first-round win, he ran 6.30/229.00 in round two over Henry Harrison, who had his parachute fall out early. In the semi-final, Jim Dunn broke against him, and he advanced with a 6.41/225.00. He faced Jim Adolph in the final, and Menzies' car broke and slowed to 10.95, but that was enough for the win when Adolph crossed the centerline and was disqualified. Menzies was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.29 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but he lost in the opening round. In June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals but ended up as the fourth alternate with a 6.40 best. His next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 6.41 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but he lost a blower belt in round one and slowed to a 6.61 loss against Raymond Beadle's 6.31 in the "Blue Max." Simon's 6.34/233.16 was the first alternate at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The team ran 4/5 NHRA national events with best times of 6.30/235.60 at Seattle. Used Nitrous. The team began the year with a Donovan but switched to a Keith Black Hemi in the racing year. |

Notes: Confirmed 5.337 at 277.00 at Seattle and Pomona Finals 1988. Also 5.378 from Indy 1988. Where was this 5.290/278 from? Photo from Milan, MI, 1988. | Oswald started the '88 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #6 with a 5.45. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round, and in round two, a 5.49/262 beat a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein. But in the semifinals, Mark got out of shape and shut off against Jim Head. The team then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where they promptly smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Ed McCulloch. A week later, on March 20, they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Mark qualified #4 with a 5.37/275.98 and in round one, defeated Bruce Larson. In the second round, a 5.78/264 beat Scott Kalitta. He moved into the finals by running a 5.44/270 over a tire smoking Don Prudhomme. But a final round 5.35/278 by Bernstein ended the day for Oswald. He made up for the loss by winning the IHRA Supernationals at DeSoto Dragway, Bradenton, on March 27. The race was originally slated to run on March 6, but it was rained out. Mark ran 5.62 and 5.66 to work his way into the final where his final round 5.67/249 took the victory over Kalitta's close 5.69/256. At IHRA's Texas Nationals, Mark ran well again. He ran 5.42/267 in the first round, and in round two, a 5.40/267.06 beat Tim Grose. But a consistent 5.41/266.03 in the semifinals lost to Mike Dunn's 5.39/275. Oswald made it into the semifinals at the next event as well, the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Mark advanced past the first-round with a 5.67, and in round two, a 5.55/260 got around an out of shape Tom Hoover. But he lost to McCulloch's Low ET of the meet 5.52 in the semis. On May 1 they were at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Mark qualified #2 and in the first round, he advanced with a 5.83/260.11 when Etchells broke. In the semifinals, he fouled against Head. Mark got his first NHRA victory of the year at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals on May 15. A 5.59 qualified #4 and be beat Larson in round one. A 5.55/268.73 (Top Speed) beat Grose in round two and in the semifinals, a 5.62/268 beat Head. In the final, he out drove McCulloch by running a 5.55/267 to win over the "Ace's" 5.54/262. A week later (May 22) he was back in the winner's circle at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He stopped Hoover in the semifinals with a 5.64/261.17 and went on to win the event by running 5.65/259.51 in the final over Dale Pulde's 5.75/224 in Billy Meyer's car. On May 29, he made it as far as the semis at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. In his semifinal race, he hazed the tires and lost to Bernstein. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, they went out early when Oswald smoked the tires and crossed the centerline in the first round, against Pulde. Things went far better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Mark ran 5.47/266.98 to qualify #3, and then ran 5.59, 5.55/264, and a semifinal 5.49/267 over a fouling John Force to meet up with Prudhomme in the final. The "Snake" took the win with a 5.44/260, but it was still a good showing for the "Candies and Hughes" team. They followed it up with another runner-up finish at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 10. Mark set Low ET and a new track record with a 5.52 at 256.11 in the first round, while beating R.C. Sherman and in the semifinal, he only needed a 6.00/178.64 to advanced over a tire smoking Pulde. In the final, it was Mark's turn to smoke the tires and he shut off to a 9.89/74.97 to lose to McCulloch's 5.54/265. A week later found the team at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.49/261.78 qualified #6. He beat Eric Reed in the first round, but he lost to the race's eventual winner Prudhomme, in round two. |

Notes: Second funny car effort by these fabled Denver hot rodders. Raced at 1968 OCIR Mfg. Meet. The Kenz and Leslie team was very strong in the Denver area. The team knew how to set up their motors in the high altitude. On April 21,Leslie was at Oklahoma City where he lasted until the semifinal before his off-pace 8.97/165.09 lost to eventual winner,Bob Manion's 8.21/178.The team was at Green Valley in May for an eight-car show. Ron beat Ronnie Runyan's 8.93/163 in the first round, with an 8.22/157.89. Unfortunately, Leslie lost to Dick Harrell in the semifinals.Leslie was one of four FC's at Austin,Texas on June 15. In the first round, his 8.15 beat Mike Burkhart who blew a transmission. In his second race,Gene Snow's 8.23/174 fell to the Cougar's 8.12/181.44.These two lined up once again for a final race as the other two cars had broke. Once again,Ron beat the Charger, but this time his holeshot got the job done as his 8.07/177.51 beat Snow's quicker,8.04/178. At Castle Rock, Colorado, on July 21, Leslie drove the Cougar to strip records of 8.22/177.86. Ron set a new AHRA Funny Car speed record at Fremont on August 4 at 199.60. He backed it up with a run of 196.06. The Funny Car show featured sixteen-cars and Leslie won running a best of 7.85 and dropping Charlie Allen in the final. |

Notes: Beadle was running with Ford sponsorship for 1982, which included a new EXP body on his car. He started the season by qualifying third at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.99/228.42. He ran as well as a 5.97/244.56 in his semifinal win over Frank Hawley's quicker 5.96/239. In the final, he met Al Segrini where his 6.32/226.13 fell to Al's 6.26/238.09. A 5.91/243.90 (Top Speed) qualified #1 at the Gatornationals, but in the first round, he met Segrini again and this time Beadle got out of shape and hit the guardrail. The car ended up flipping upside down and slid into the opposite guardrail before coming to a halt. He was OK, but the EXP body was totaled. At the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington, the team showed up with last year's Omni body and qualified #1 with a 6.02 (Low ET), but he lost in the first round. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 25 where a 5.98/235.60 qualified third. A first-round 5.88/238 beat Gary Burgin and a 5.93/240 beat Paul Smith in the semifinals. In the final, he reset the NHRA record to a 5.87 with a speed of 243.24 to win the race over Hawley. On May 2 he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am where a track record 5.86 led qualifying. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to John Pott. He followed that race up with a win at the NHRA Cajun Nationals beating Don Prudhomme in the final with a 6.08/239.36 over Don's 6.13/247.25. He qualified second with a 6.00. Another win came at the IHRA Springnationals where he set Low ET (6.00) and beat Billy Meyer in the final. He then ran at the NHRA Springnationals on June 13 where a 5.98/242.58 qualified third, but in the first round, he smoked all eight pistons and lost to Segrini. A week later at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, Beadle set a 5.88 track record in qualifying and ran another 5.88 in his first-round win over John Pott. In the semifinals, Dale Pulde's 6.29 beat Beadle's 6.31. Raymond won the US Funny Car Championships at Brainerd on June 27. He beat Doc Halladay and Glenn Mikres before stopping Burgin in the final. He qualified eighth with a 6.48/226.70 in the eight-car field at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A first-round 6.51/222 beat Tom Anderson's 6.58 and a 6.25/226.69 beat Craig Epperly's quicker 6.19/230.17 in the semifinal. In the final he met Meyer who had set Low ET and Top Speed (6.12/240), but he shut down to a 6.85/149.75 and had to settle for runner-up. A 6.00 qualified second at the IHRA Summernationals, but he lost to Pott in the first round. Another first-round loss followed at the NHRA Grandnationals on July 4 where he qualified eighth again with a 6.15/242.24 in the eight-car show, but he had a rear end break on his burnout for his race against Prudhomme. A 5.93/249.30 qualified second at the NHRA Summernationals, but he lost to Prudhomme in round two. He qualified second again with a 5.94/236.22 at the PHR Championships in August at Martin, Michigan, and ran a first-round 5.97 over Tim Grose. A semifinal 6.07 beat Ken Veney's quicker 6.03. In the final, a 6.02/248.61 (Top Speed) lost to Hawley's 6.01/236.22. Another win came at the IHRA Northern Nationals where he beat Tim Grose in the final. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, he qualified seventh with a 6.03/233.76. A first-round 5.97/246.57 by Gary Burgin beat Ray's 6.05/243.90. At Indy, for the US Nationals, the Max qualified a disappointing twelfth with a 5.98/224.99. And in the opening round, he lost to Ken Veney. He was runner-up to the "Snake" at the 13th annual Governor's Cup Championships at Sacramento. His final round 6.12 lost to Prudhomme's 5.99. A 6.19 failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. He rebounded with a 5.98 to qualify seventh at the NHRA World Finals, but after beating Burgin in round one, he lost to Hawley in the next round. Raymond competed at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet in Nov, but he failed in his attempt to reach the final. He ended the season at a four-car match at Moroso Motorsports Park during the running of the Citrus Nationals. Beadle set Low ET with a 6.27. — Ron Howard |
